rora Rangers have appointed longserving player Ally MacDonald as their new manager. The left-back, who joined the Cattachs in 2012 after a spell playing US collegiate soccer with the Emrby Eagles, has made over 300 appearances for the Dudgeon Park side – and now makes the move into management. The manager’s hot seat became vacant at the turn of the year when Craig Campbell resigned from his post. Player Josh Meekings and Stuart Golabek had been steering the ship prior to the permanent appointment of MacDonald. In an interview with the club’s newly established social media team, MacDonald said: “I’m obviously delighted. It is a big moment for myself. It continues the journey that I have had so far for the club. “There was obviously a gap there that they needed filled. When I was aksed the question, I was taken aback, but when I sat down and thought about it, the opportunity to work with a team of

this quality, and with the coaching staff I’d have with me, I think it was a no-brainer in the end. “It’ll be different as obviously I’ll be making decisions I didn’t have to before, but I’m a big believer that leadership runs throughout a squad and we have more than me in that role. We have big players in the squad and in the coaching staff, so togetherness is not going to be a problem.” MacDonald, who captained Brora before the appointment, already has high ambitions for the club, alongside his new assistant Josh Meekings. “As a coaching team, we are very ambitious. We know we have a squad of players there that want to win and want to be successful. “You need people with experience like Josh, for example. He has been fulfilling that assistant mnager for a while now and I’m delighted with that.” MacDonald kicked off his managerial tenure with a 2-0 win over struggling Strathspey Thistle on Saturday February 25th.

League champions Fraserburgh U21’s with the GPH Builders Merchants Aberdeenshire League Trophy.

he destination of this season’s Aberdeenshire & District League Championship has been determined after fixtures in the competition were completed this past month. Despite falling to a 3-0 defeat away to Dyce on February 20th, the season-

long efforts of Fraserburgh’s under-21 combination saw them lift the trophy, which was presented to them by Mike Macaulay of sponsors, GPH Builders Merchants. Led by coaches Dean Cowie and Graham Johnston, it is the first time Fraserburgh have won the league since

1997-98, and is the eighth time overall as winners since the trophy’s introduction in 1919. They are now the competition’s second most successful club, just behind Buckie Thistle on 11 wins. The defeat to Dyce was their first and only defeat of the nine game campaign, having won seven and drawn one other

fixture. The Broch’s closest rivals Turriff United secured second place with a 3-0 win over Inverurie Locos on February 20th. Deveronvale, who finished third, did all they could to push for the runners-up spot by beating Keith away from home, but fell just one point short.

he North Region Junior FA’s most easterly side, Montrose Roselea, has confirmed that it will move back to the East Region junior ranks to join the Midlands League in what would be the first “side-step” between Tier 6 divisions since the formalisation of the Northern pyramid. The club cited a sharp increase in travel costs since the club moved from the East Region to the North Region in 2016. In the Midlands League, the longest trip for Roselea would be to Letham in Perth. Club officials believe the move will alleviate the need to hire a bus for any matches including regional cups, saying that “it makes complete sense to consider the move.” A statement from the club read: “After receiving permission from the SJFA Management Committee and approval from all relevant parties Montrose Roselea would like to confirm that they will take part in the East Region Juniors Midlands League for season 2023-24. “The move makes sense for all parties involved and will reduce travel for Montrose Roselea with the current boundary being Letham in Perth as the furthest travelling distance of around 60 miles. “Montrose Roselea would like to thank all parties for their co-operartion with the move and Roselea would also like to thank all the clubs in the North Juniors who made them feel at home during their seven season spell.” The move highlights the ongoing struggle facing many clubs in the lower tiers of Scottish football as they tackle

FLOODLIGHTS GIVEN FIRST RUN OUT IN MIDWEEK FIXTURE

ecently licensed East Region Junior FA club Lochee United unveiled their new floodlights on March 8th for a midweek league Midlands League match aaginst Coupar Angus. The club were granted planning permission from Dundee City Council in September 2021 to install floodlights at their Thomson Park home. The lights were installed at the beginning of 2022, along with new toilet facilities for supporters and a disabled viewing area within their club rooms. The new floodlights were first first turned on in January 2022 and six months later the club were accepted as an SFA member. Having satisfied the criteria prescribed within the licensing procedures, Lochee United are now one of just four clubs in the northern sixth tier able to participate in the Scottish Cup and will be in a position to progress through the pyramid system should they win the Midlands League. Club president Graham Carling commented at the time: “This is an important step in our ambitious plans for the club. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the many people involved with the club, we have achieved this milestone and our focus now is firmly on the next stage as we set our sights on progression to the professional leagues.”
