ighland League champions Fraserburgh have been crowned Aberdeenshire Shield winners for 2022-23 with a 2–1 win over Buckie Thistle under the lights at Kynoch Park. Mark Cowie’s side saw a change in goal with sixteen year old Sam Inglis stepping in for the injured Joe Barbour. Both sides flirted with goal in the early going, with Andy MacAskill cutting across and shooting over the bar for Buckie, and Scott Barbour firing a low cross across goal.

E L P M SA

Broch were the side to take the lead ithough, finding the net in 24 minutes with a goal from top scorer Barbour. The striker fired a deflected shot past Lee Herbert from seven yards after the keeper had beaten away an earlier effort from Ryan Sargent. Cohen Ramsay, Josh Peters and Max Barry each threatened to equalise for Thistle as time wore on, coming

agonisingly close to equalising before Connor Wood at the other forced a save from Herbert. A Scott Adams shot cannoned off the upright on the hour mark, but it was only to be another three minutes before his side drew level. An Andy MacAskill free kick provided the danger as Sam Pugh pounced to fire the ball home from close range. The sides could not be separated until the 88th minute when a right footed cross from Ross Aitken found the head of Sean Butcher who found the bottom right corner of the net. There was still time for Buckie to pull themselves back level, and they nearly did that when substitute Kyle Macleod headed the ball down to Urquhart who fired just wide. The win brings the ninth piece of silverware to Bellslea Park during the tenure of Fraserburgh manager Mark Cowie. It is the third time that Cowie’s Broch have won the trophy. For Buckie, the loss continues a six year weight for silverware, having last tasted success with the winning of the Highland League in 2016-17. Pics: Barry Walker

AS HIGHLAND CLUBS RING THE CHANGES CHANGES AT THE TOP FOR CLUBS ON BACK OF MANAGER RESIGNATIONS

E L MP Languishing at the bottom of the table, Charlie Brown was the first manager to hand in his resignation, throwing the towel in on December 9th after a string of poor results in charge at Strathspey Thistle. Brown took charge of the Jags 18 month ago, looking to bring about change in an

18-month spell in charge of the Harlaw Park club following a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Clachnacuddin on January 7th. The defeat is the latest set-back in a run of poor form that has seen them win just one of their last five matches. The club sit in sixth place in the Highland Football League, nine points adrift of the top four. In their statement released on the club website, Locos said: “Inverurie Loco Works Football Club can confirm, with regret, that manager Richard Hastings has left Harlaw Park. “The ex-Canadian internationalist was in charge of the Railwaymen for sixty two matches, with his first match being against Fraserburgh in August 2021. “Richie always conducted himself with the utmost professionalism and departs Harlaw Park with the warmest of thanks for his efforts. Everyone at the Football Club wishes Richie all the very best for the future.” The club has since announced former manager Andy Low as the man they hope will turn their fortunes around. Speaking to the club’s official website, Low said: “I believe I am coming back a stronger manager and can’t wait to get started. My full concentration is now firmly on the job at hand and I will do everything to put things in place to ensure that the Locos are a team that the town can be proud of.” Low’s return coincides with the return of former player and co-manager Scott Buchan who joins the committee, while also staying on as U21 manager.

he Highland League has not seen much in the way of football over the festive period - with winter weather postponements playing havoc with the fixture schedule. But there has been no shortage of activity when it comes to managrial movements – with no fewer than five Highland League clubs beginning the new year with changes in the dugout. Supporters of Brora Rangers were left in shock when double cup-winning manager Craig Campbell stepped down from his role on January 5th. The Invergordon native called it quits just two days before the Cattachs’ opening fixture of 2023, with the club issuing a short statement on Twitter: “Brora Rangers advise that Craig Campbell has resigned his position with immediate effect and this has been accepted by the Club. “Assistant Manager Stuart Golabek will take charge of the team in the interim. He will be supported by David Kirkwood & Josh Meekings.” Campbell took the reigns at Brora after a stint as assistant manager to Steven Mackay, who left the club in September 2021. The former Ross County and Elgin City forward turned the club’s fortunes around after a stuttering start to the 2021-22 season and eventually steered Brora to two consecutive cup successes, winning the Highland League Cup (in 2021-22) followed by the North of Scotland Cup earlier this season.

rolling as news came on December 19th that Joe Russell had bid farewell to Lossiemouth. Manager of the Coasters for four and a half years, Russell had overseen a complete change of guard at the club, wth several players coming through the club’s youth ranks. Lossiemouth have experienced a slow, yet upwards trend when it comes to improvement in league placing under Russell, improving on a 17th placed finish in his first season to 15th place during the 2021-22 campaign. A statement from the club read: “Lossiemouth Football Club has today reluctantly accepted the resignation of manager Joe Russell. “In charge since June 2018, Joe took command of a promising young squad and set about improving Lossie’s position in the table and restoring confidence amongst both the playing staff and the support. “Everyone at the club would like to thank Joe most sincerely for his considerable efforts and wish him and his family all the best for the future. “Lossiemouth Football Club will take time to decide upon the appropriate course of action following Joe’s departure and will make an announcement in the near future with regards to a successor.” With the club stating that they do not wish to rush an appointment, assistant Ian Campbell, and coach Scott Campbell have taken interim charge of the side. A fourth managerial departure was confirmed on January 8th with the resignation of Inverurie Locos boss Richard Hastings. Former Inverness Caledonian Thistle defender Hastings (45) called time on his

era that has seen them drop to the foot of the table following the relegation of Fort William. But the Seafield Park side have struggled to compete, winning just once and picking up a total of just five points from 20 games to date. A club statement read: “Strathspey Thistle would like to confirm as from yesterday afternoon Charlie Brown has stood down from his role of Team Manager with immediate effect. “The club would like to put on record their great appreciation of Charlie’s professionalism and effort he gave to the club in this tough time. “Thank you Charlie Brown and we wish you all the best for the future.” Speaking after the news, Brown cited poor attendance at training and a lack or morale for the timing of his departure, couped with the toll the job had been taking on family life. In the interm, the reigns have been taken by former Thistle manager Brian Ritchie, who had been appointed earlier this season as Head of Football Development. Ritchie has been spearheading a new club ethos of re-engaging with the community in and around Grantown-on-spey, including the creation of a Strathspey Thistle community team, designed to encourage the development of local players. The club moved in February to appoint Alness United manager Robert MacCormack as assistant manager, before confirming his appointment to the manager’s post on February 16th. The new manager is yet to name his backroom team, but has already set out his stall, aiming to bring in experience and some “older, seasoned heads” to balance the squad as they look to avoid bottom spot.

E L P M SA

Brown’s resignation only set the ball

The fifth manager to call time on his tenure during these winter months was Jamie Watt, who, along with assistant Roy McBain, left Banks o’ Dee on January 9th. The resignation followed a spell of misfortune and under-par results for the Spain Park side. The club confirmed a fortnight later that the interim management team of Josh Winton, Paul Lawson (as co-managers) and Alex Gray (as assistant) will remain in post for the remainder of the season. Chairman Brian Winton said “We’ve done a lot of restructuring at the club over the last few weeks and want to ensure our focus for the rest of the season is on delivering results on the pitch. The above appointment will provide the continuity we need to achieve that.”

Robert MacCormack left Alness United where he held the manager’s post, to join Strathspey Thistle’s as the club’s new manager. Photo: Stuart Grant

HIGHLAND LEAGUE CUP

HIGHLAND LEAGUE T CUP SEMIS DRAWN

FOR HIGHLAND LEAGUE 2? he Highland League has not seen much in the way of football over the festive period - with winter weather postponements playing havoc with the fixture schedule. My support of the Highland League pyramid system and relegation being introduced didn’t go down well with a lot of traditionalists who preferred a closed shop either. Now any chance of being invited back to the far north to parties or social gatherings might be dented further when I am suggesting a Highland League second division to accommodate the threat of relegation. I am not suggesting splitting the current league into two, when it was suggested having two leagues of 10 few years ago. That was deservedly blasted by former Wick Academy chairman James Innes, and booted out the door quicker than Jack Ross’s time as Dundee United manager. At the moment, the sixth level of football consists of the North Caledonian League, the North Junior Super League and Midlands League. The three winners of each division qualify for the play-offs along with the team that finishes bottom of the Highland League for a place in the division. That is as long as each team holds an SFA licence, which is a requirement to enter the Highland League. At present, only four teams below Highland League level in the north have the SFA licence. Golspie Sutherland and Fort William, who have no chance of winning the North Caledonian League this season. In the Midlands League, Tayport also have no chance, leaving Lochee United as the only realistic chance of forcing a play-off at the end of the campaign. The whole regional system for the playoffs in the Highland League seems to be a faff

to be honest. So why not create a second division for teams from each of these regions who are actually interested in making the step up to the Highland League? Keep the existing 18-team Highland League division as it is, and create a new division below consisting of teams actually interested in moving up a level. Although most clubs will not publicly admit it, a lot in the north aren’t that interested in making the step up from the level they are at. That includes Highland League clubs who have no desires of League Two. But there is obviously desire from elsewhere and especially from the Midlands League, where clubs are making huge efforts to gain an SFA licence. Highland League traditionalists might hate the pyramid system, but it has been a good thing. Banks O’ Dee, disregarding their 24-point deduction due to an admin error, have proven to be one of the best teams in the league this season, outside Brechin City and Buckie Thistle. Cove Rangers, who never hid their ambitions to move up, are now in the Championship holding their own. The most obvious sign of the success of the pyramid system is the Lowland League. Kelty Hearts and FC Edinburgh both in League One and Bonnyrigg Rose in League Two. While former SPFL strugglers Berwick Rangers, Cowdenbeath and East Stirlingshire are languishing at the bottom end of the Lowland League. Some clubs may have no interest in moving up to Highland League level. So create a Highland League second division for teams who are keen to make the step up. Let Will know what you think by sending him an email at will.clark@hnmedia.co.uk.
