MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear members,

November welcomes the much-anticipated transition from fall into winter. Before we turn with eager eyes to the first falling flakes, however, I’d like to take this space to thank the hardworking staff that kept our amenities open this summer, especially as we navigated the heavy smoke of the Mosquito Fire in September. Whether front-facing or behind the scenes, I am proud of the long hours and friendly faces our staff provided this season.

I’d also like to thank all the swimmers, bikers, hikers, equestrians, tennis players, campers, golfers, diners and more who made this summer something truly special.

It was a pleasure to see families and friends alike enjoying the amenities and open spaces throughout the season.

HAPPYORNOT®

SNOW-MAKING

The Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center is known both locally and nationally for its groomed trails, unique terrain and professional ski school. This season, we are excited to share that TDXC is the first in the region to install a snow-making system dedicated to enhancing cross country trails.

Snow guns will be able to create a more consistent snowpack in areas with historically little cover at the ski area –including the practice meadow. Pending conditions, we are excited to implement this technology for a much-anticipated Nov. 25 start date. Snow-making capabilities are also available at Snowplay this season for even more excitement for all ages.

BRINGING OUT THE BIG SNOW-MAKING GUNS THIS WINTER

THE CROSS COUNTRY SKI CENTER UNVEILS ITS PLANS FOR SNOW-MAKING THIS WINTER SEASON

With cooler weather and shorter days, you’ll likely hear with increasing frequency utterances to “pray for snow.”

It is this time of year when winter sports enthusiasts eagerly await – nay, attempt to conjure – the start of the ski season. This year, motivated Nordic skiers may not have to wish so hard. The Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center has announced its plans to make snow as soon as conditions allow, hoping to open some of its programs and trails by Thanksgiving weekend.

FEATURE

As the first resort in the region to install a snow-making system dedicated to cross country trails, Tahoe Donner is taking a cutting-edge step toward being able to offer an earlier opening date and a more reliable season at the world-class facility. So, in addition to the collective invocation for early winter precipitation, be sure to supplicate for an extreme drop in temperatures and humidity somewhere around mid-November.

TAKING MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS

For Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Area Manager Sally Jones, the implementation of a snow-making system has been a long time coming. “We had begun to seriously consider investing in snow-making in 2018 after several years of drought. And through our research, we determined that it wouldn’t take a huge system to better guarantee snow on the trails, even in bad years.”

While most of the trails receive adequate snowfall every year, snow-blowing efforts focus on areas where holding snow can be difficult; this improves access and helps maintain a more contiguous trail system for the duration of the winter season. “It’s an investment that not only provides our skiers an enhanced overall experience but again puts us as a leader in the industry,” says Jones. Snow-making is also planned for the teaching areas – as weather and conditions permit – also allowing for potentially earlier availability of XC lessons.

SNOW-MAKING TAKES “DEW” DILIGENCE

All the planning and preparation that has gone into this Truckee Donner Public Utility District-supported project is worth noting. Jones and the Tahoe Donner Capital Projects team have worked diligently to ensure an efficient and sustainable operation that will have as little strain on the town’s water supply and as low of a noise impact on the surrounding households as possible. And as part of Tahoe Donner’s commitment to the environment, no artificial additives will be put in the water as is done at some resorts.

The engineers and crew are also well informed on the ideal conditions for blowing snow on the XC trails, which differ from the downhill resort given the elevation and other geographic factors. While artificial snow can be made when air temperatures are around freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit), optimal conditions occur when the wet bulb temperature (a combination of temperature and humidity) reaches 24-26 degrees Fahrenheit or lower over a sustained period. The team carefully considers all these elements when deciding the right time and location to make snow. A combination of “stick” guns, which produce a more focused stream of snow, and “fan” guns that disperse snow over a much wider area, ensures that the process maximizes efficient use of power and water.

Please be aware that once snow-making has started, the XC Ski Center asks that trail users respect closures to ensure their safety and preserve the snow for early-season skiing. To learn more about trail etiquette this season, visit tahoedonner.com/xc.

MAN-MADE VERSUS NATURAL SNOW – IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN QUALITY?

Natural snow is comprised of a complex network of crystalline structures, where crystal “arms” form around tiny particles in the air such as dirt. On the other hand, artificial snow is made by pumping millions of water droplets into the cold air, where they freeze and eventually fall to the ground. This type of snow is heavier and denser given its higher water content. And when magnified, one would see that manmade snow is minute balls of crystallized ice without “arms” attached.

So how might artificial snow impact your XC skiing experience? It’s likely that you won’t notice a difference. But you could be out there earlier in the season and the snowpack might be deeper where snow is made! The density and water content of man-made snow can form an ideal base for natural snow to fall onto. It packs down quickly, lasts longer and is more resistant to rain. And while freshly blown snow might be wetter than natural snow, once groomed, there is very little variation in surface texture.

JUST ANOTHER PERK FOR CROSS COUNTRY SKIERS

With stunning views of the mountains, 2,800 acres of Sierra Nevada terrain for all ski levels, and over 100 km of breathtaking XC and snowshoeing trails, there are already so many reasons why the Cross Country Ski Center is world-renowned.

For the facility to be able to provide earlier-season access and more reliable conditions, Tahoe Donner solidifies its spot as Sierra Sun’s Best Cross Country Ski Resort for seven straight years.

BECOME A WILDLIFE TRACKER

Have you ever wondered what kinds of wild animals lurk right outside your back door? When the snow settles, it’s never been easier to identify who of your furry neighbors has just been scampering about by the tracks they’ve left behind. This basic field guide is a fun way to make your next nature walk an interactive exploration of Tahoe Donner’s flora and fauna. Take a journal with you to keep track of all that you discover. Happy exploring!

BLACK BEAR BOBCAT

These majestic beasts are a common site just before winter, but you may start to see their tracks more frequently in late spring when they’re emerging from hibernation. These hefty omnivores spend much of their time foraging for bugs and berries in preparation for a long winter nap, but will unfortunately enter homes and cars if they’ve grown accustomed to human food. While bears are not an immediate threat to humans, for everyone’s safety, it’s best to encourage these mostly gentle giants to avoid residential areas. Securely lock your doors and windows and properly stow all trash in designated bear boxes to ensure that no bears make your home their favorite snack bar.

Don’t be fooled by these cute and cuddly looking felines –bobcats can be fierce predators. About twice as long as a domestic house cat, they have dark spots, stubby tails and short ears, sometimes with tufts of hair at the tip to improve hearing.

Bobcats can live in a variety of areas, from swamps to deserts to coniferous forests, though they prefer to live alone than in packs. As carnivores, they survive by hunting small animals like rodents, fish and birds.

Always practice trail safety when exploring and keep your distance from any wildlife you may encounter. Do not feed wild animals either – they have all they need in the forest!

COYOTE MULE DEER DOUGLAS SQUIRREL SNOWSHOE HARE

Coyotes may be a member of the canine family, but their pointed ears and light grey, red or tawny coat make them easily distinguishable from your average four-legged friends.

Weighing up to 44 pounds for healthy males and 40 pounds for full-size females, coyotes can live up to 10 years in the wild! They thrive on hunting small animals, birds, snakes and large insects, but have also been known to scavenge where food litter is common. Keep your pets safe from these clever predators by putting dogs on leash when coyotes are present and keeping cats indoors.

Named for their large and elongated ears, mule deer are the only deer species that live in the Truckee River area. Their large brown bodies are tipped with tails that may be white with a black tip, all black or all brown.

Mule deer often migrate from summer to winter ranges. They feed on a variety of available plants throughout the winter. They prefer to inhabit areas near water sources like lakes and streams for an ample supply of food, water and shelter.

These small and vocal tree squirrels are common to the Sierra Nevadas, although they have been discovered as far north as Canada! This species of squirrel has a gray-brown head and back with a yellow or light orange-tinted belly and a white eye ring.

Douglas squirrels like to live where pines and firs grow, and in the winter, they feast on the fruits, berries and seeds they stashed away! (Fun fact: these stashes are called “middens” and can last more than just one season).

The snowshoe hare is a species named for the large size of their hind feet. While commonly found throughout North America, they become much harder to spot in wintertime when their coats turn white! This clever camouflage allows them to blend in with the snow, which protects against larger predators like coyotes and bobcats.

Snowshoe hares remain active all year long, so while you might not see them as often during winter, you can still find their tracks where they’ve recently foraged for food.

QUILT CLUB

Hello, I’m Odette, and I would like to share my personal experience with the Quilt Club! After retiring and relocating here five years ago, I shyly attended my first quilt meeting and was warmly greeted by a group of cheerful women. Since then, I have seen so many incredible pieces created by these talented ladies, as well as learned new techniques and tricks to help improve my skills. There is a wealth of knowledge here! The club also does a lot of community work sewing baby quilts, placemats, cancer pillows and more for local charity organizations, which I find very rewarding and makes me proud to be part of such a generous group.

Do you have a quilt project half done and hiding in the back of a closet? Or have you always wanted to make a quilt, but didn’t know where to start? We can help! Don’t be shy –come and join us! And if we don’t see you before the holiday, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

For more information about the Tahoe Donner Quilting Club and our latest projects, please contact Odette Turmel at odette.turmel@gmail.com

The club meets in the Alder Room downstairs at The Lodge on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 1-3PM.

MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB

Fall riding has been fantastic this year, and we hope all members have enjoyed the amazing colors and spectacular weather. Through the winter, the club will continue to plan rides in Auburn, Nevada City and the Bay Area. We are also planning on some night rides this year! If you have never done it, we will look for extra headlamps. It is a fun and exciting way to extend the riding season. For more information or to join, visit tdmtb.club We hope to see you on the trails!

4-WHEELERS CLUB

The TD4WD Club experienced some scheduling challenges in September due to smoke and air quality, but we were still able to run the Bear Valley OHV Trail Loop. It is a fun and easy 18-mile out-and-back trail near Pine Valley maintained by the Diablo 4Wheelers. And in lieu of our Bocce Ball event, we moved our gettogether to Pizza on the Hill where we played a lively game of Liar’s Dice while noshing on hot pizzas and cold beers. Our compliments to the staff for a great time! For the barbecue held at Alder Creek Cafe on Oct. 1, we were fortunate to enjoy a good crowd, clear skies and delicious food at a wonderful venue.

TD 9-HOLERS CLUB

Congratulations to all our season and tournament winners! Based on her average low gross, new member Suz Field dominated as this year’s Club Champion. Coral Cavanagh finished as first runner up and Marie Casey finished as second runner up. The ALG winners for the front and back nines were Suz and Coral respectively.

Two of our new members earned season-end awards. Marilyn Dundas won ALG Runner-Up, and Debra Varian took home the “Frequent Flier” award for playing the most league rounds. The Most Improved award went to Nell McBeth, who had the lowest average net and improved her handicap by five strokes this season! Nell was presented with our Tournament Champion trophy at our late-August banquet. What an accomplishment!

Our club offers a great way to improve your game through easy-tofit-in, inclusive 9-hole play. Get some practice in over winter and join us next year! For club information, email td9hole@gmail.com

KARATE CLUB

The Flynn siblings all received belt/ rank promotions recently. Alyssa Flynn was promoted to a green belt and Bradley, Jayden and Kayla Flynn were all promoted to purple belts. The Karate Club celebrated their accomplishments at Pizza on the Hill.

Our final trail run of the year is on Thursday, Nov 3. We will head to the Lagomarsino Canyon Petroglyphs outside of Reno. There are more petroglyphs there than at any other site in Nevada. This 14.6-mile outand-back trail is rated a “2” and is suitable for high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Club members can view the schedule and register for trail runs at td4wheelers.org

MEN’S GOLF CLUB

The TD Men’s Golf Club hosted 15 events this past season with more than 500 participants, as well as 17 Wednesday games involving well over 300 players. That’s a lot of golf! We would like to express our appreciation to Course Superintendent Ram Sena and Head Pro Jeff Hwang and their teams for providing fantastic course conditions and top-notch service. This was definitely a season to remember and we are already excited for next year.

Join the Club Club Members will soon receive renewal information by email. Prospective new members are encouraged to

GO GLOBAL, GIVE LOCAL ON GIVING TUESDAY

BE “UNSELFIE” WITH THE TAHOE DONNER GIVING FUND

Giving Tuesday, the international day of philanthropy that started in 2012, is on Nov. 29. The movement that began as a counter to Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year, Giving Tuesday has now become one of the largest days of giving with $2.6 billion donated to U.S. nonprofits last year.

THE “UNSELFIE”

The beauty of Giving Tuesday is that it is a completely online, one-day-only experience for donors and nonprofits. And what’s an online experience without a post to your social media to show affinity for your favorite cause? Introducing the #GivingFundTuesday “Unselfie,” a fun image template to post in place of a selfie on your favorite social media platform (Nextdoor, LinkedIn, Instagram or Facebook) to show your support for the Giving Fund.

Here’s how you can be “Unselfie” and raise awareness of #GivingFundTuesday:

• Go to tahoedonner.com/giving-fund and click on #GivingFundTuesday to donate and download your “Unselfie” template

• Click the “Unselfie” Download link to download and print your template

• Write why you choose to give to the Giving Fund on the template

• Take a selfie of the “Unselfie” template you created

• On Tuesday, Nov. 29, post the “Unselfie” photo to your social media profiles with the hashtag #GivingFundTuesday

Additional ways to participate on Giving Tuesday:

• Share kindness with your neighbors

• Volunteer or share your talents

• Give your voice to a cause that matters to you

• Show gratitude to restaurant personnel, healthcare workers and service providers

Join your Tahoe Donner neighbors and give on #GivingFundTuesday! Donate at givingfund.tahoedonner.com/GivTues22
