MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear members,

One of the many things staff are working on is Workplan Goal 6, which says, “Develop and implement a comprehensive member engagement initiative that fosters member enjoyment and increases value.”

Coming up, we have lots of new events, tons of live music, a variety of trail stewardship opportunities, cornhole tournaments and the return of free Yoga on the Meadow.

THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER: ALDER CREEK ADVENTURE CENTER

With so many great offerings this season, the Alder Creek Adventure Center (ACAC) is the new hub for all your summer adventures and family fun. Building upon the success of the Edi-Bōl dinner series, the Alder Creek Cafe is now offering dinner every Thursday through Sunday from 5-8PM, and the Trailside Bar has extended its hours to 8PM every night so trail users can enjoy an après beverage after their ride or hike. Other exciting things for members to check out at ACAC include:

• Trail Stewardship Days on Thursday afternoons throughout July and August

• Bike maintenance clinics (free for members!)

• Cornhole tournaments on Fridays

• Sunday night trivia

• Two trail checkpoint events with live music

• Equestrian BBQ and the Wild West Fest

• And other great community events!

Turn to page 8 to learn more.

MUSIC BY THE MEADOW + GROOVES BY THE GREENS

Two new live music series are debuting this July for your enjoyment:

• MUSIC BY THE MEADOW: On Saturday nights from 5-7PM starting July 8, grab

a blanket and head over to the lawn at Pizza on the Hill to enjoy live music performances and meadow views – all while the kids can enjoy the playground nearby. Turn to page 29 to learn more.

• GROOVES BY THE GREENS: On Friday evenings from 6-8PM starting July 28, groove along with your favorite local musicians and bands amidst fresh air and fairway views at The Lodge Pavilion. Dinner service will be offered on the Pavilion for these events; we look forward to showing off the newly renovated space! See details on page 27.

FITNESS CLASSES AT THE REC CENTER NOW FREE WITH THE PURCHASE OF THE REC FEE

The rumors are true. Fitness classes are now included in your Rec Fee or the Daily Access Fee at the Trout Creek Rec Center! Take advantage of the gym, pools, steam room and sauna. To learn more about classes and how to purchase your Recreation Fee, turn to page 12.

GOLF COURSE OPEN

Despite a record-breaking winter and rainy spring, the Tahoe Donner Golf Course crew has removed snow, repaired damage and dried out the greens. The course is shaping up nicely, and we are excited to be fully operational. Golfers can tee off once again, and if you are rusty after the long winter like me, don’t forget about the clinics and lessons. To learn more about programs and offerings at the Golf Course, turn to page 14.

I hope you are as excited about this July as I am, and I look forward to crossing paths as we celebrate the summer fun ahead.

Be well,

Bikeworks Offers eBike Options For Diverse Riders

To enhance the trail experience and make the Tahoe Donner Trail System more accessible to riders of all abilities, Bikeworks is now offering full-suspension Class 1 pedal-assist electric mountain bikes (eMTBs) for rent and guided eMTB tours to classic trail destinations like Euer Valley. Electric mountain bikes are an evolution of the MTB culture that provides greater options for riders to enjoy off-road cycling. There are many benefits to electric mountain bikes for both beginner and advanced riders, from providing pedal assistance for those still building their strength and endurance on the uphills to allowing more experienced riders to travel farther.

“The most exciting part of

for

is that it will allow a whole new group of trail users to experience the beautiful trails and wilderness that we have here at Tahoe Donner. People who were physically limited to riding on shorter, flatter trails can now travel much farther and over varied terrain without worry of over-exertion.”

The following guide provides important information to consider when renting an eMTB or taking yours out on the trails. All trail users – including hikers, bikers and equestrians – are regarded as ambassadors of Tahoe Donner’s unique outdoor culture that can further promote respectful etiquette and stewardship. It’s always a good idea to slow down, acknowledge others on the trails and share a smile. See etiquette details on page 6.

Read on to familiarize yourself with the basics of eMTBs and trail use.

KYLIE PAPSON

Class 1, 2 or 3 eMTBs

The International Mountain Bicycling Association (imba.com) defines an electric bicycle as “equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts.” There are currently three classes of eMTBs that vary in top speed and motor assistance.

CLASS 1

Low-speed pedal-assisted (no throttle) electric bike with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling. Top speed is 20 mph.

CLASS 2

Not allowed in Tahoe Donner Low-speed throttle-assisted electric bike with a motor that can be used exclusively to propel the bike without pedaling. Top speed is 20 mph.

CLASS 3

Not allowed in Tahoe Donner Speed pedal-assisted electric bike with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling. Top speed is 28 mph.

Bikeworks offers adult-sized Class 1 full-suspension mountain bikes from Giant Bicycles and Liv Cycling, as well as child-sized Class 1 front-suspension mountain bikes from Woom for rent and guided tours. Suitable for new and experienced riders to explore the over 60 miles of trails in Tahoe Donner, rental eMTBs are available in a range of sizes for a comfortable fit and user-friendly ride. To learn more about size options and eMTB trail usage, stop in or call the shop at (530) 582-9694.

eMTB Trail Use + Trail Ratings

With a vast trail network that varies from beginner to expert terrain, when riding eMTBs, it is important to familiarize yourself with and adhere to signage indicating trail directionality, user-specific directives and trail ratings to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

While most trails in the Tahoe Donner Trail System are multi-directional and multiuse, the Land Management Department has begun to practice adaptive trail management and reclassifying some trails as one-way, singletrack and/or only for certain user groups. These efforts allow for a richer experience for each user group that prioritizes safety, environmental impact and enjoyment. To learn more about trail classification, visit tahoedonner.com/trails.

As with winter sports like downhill skiing, Nordic skiing and snowboarding, trail ratings are essential in describing the degree of difficulty of terrain. There are inherent risks associated with all trail use, so it is critical to rider safety to know one’s ability and stay within it. Always use caution when riding.

GREEN CIRCLE TRAILS tend to have lower average grades on wider tread with fewer technical characteristics, more gradual turns and longer lines of sight.

BLUE SQUARE TRAILS fall somewhere in between green circle and black diamond trails.

BLACK DIAMOND TRAILS tend to have steeper grades on narrower treads with more technically challenging characteristics such as obstacles, quick turns and short lines of sight.

Summer trail system maps that include trail use rules, etiquette and ratings are available at Bikeworks and for download via the website at tahoedonner.com/trails While maps and signage are provided along the Tahoe Donner Trail System, these complimentary folded maps can be easily stowed in hydration packs, backpacks or back pockets for convenient access at any point during your ride.

How to Reserve an eMTB

Rentals are available throughout the Bikeworks summer season, during regular operating hours and when trails are safe to access. Always check the website at tahoedonner.com/bikeworks for the most up-to-date information on hours. Full-day eMTB rentals – as well as all traditional bike rentals – can be reserved on ShopTD (shop.tahoedonner.com).

All Tahoe Donner members receive a 10% discount on rentals, and all rentals include helmets. Complimentary locks and repair kits are available upon request. Visit Bikeworks at the Alder Creek Adventure Center or call (530) 582-9694 for current inventory and additional information on rentals and trail conditions.

eMTB Etiquette on the Tahoe Donner Trail System

Tahoe Donner strives to promote a positive experience for all trail users. Similar to regular mountain bike etiquette, the following rules should always be followed when riding eMTBs:

Only ride on trails designated for mountain bike and eMTB use. On the Tahoe Donner Trail System, eMTBS are allowed on all trails designated for mountain bikes.

Stay on the trail. Don’t cut corners, ride through vegetation or create shortcuts. Doing so can damage the trails themselves or the surrounding environment and ecosystems.

Stay off wet or muddy trails. Trail surfaces can vary depending on location. Comprised of rocks, clay, sand or loam, take care to avoid these surfaces when they are wet or muddy to prevent erosion and other degradation of the trail and surrounding area.

Keep your speed in check. Although riding fast on mountain bikes and eMTBs can be thrilling, it can pose a danger to you and other trail users. Always ride in control. Slow down as you approach others from behind. If you must pass trail users ahead, always ask politely and wait for them to respond before moving around them. Look ahead and be sure to check your speed for upcoming obstacles and corners.

Be kind. Always ride as an ambassador for the sport. Promote respect, inclusivity and safety when enjoying the trails.

NOTE

As adopted on September 17, 2021 after a 45-day member comment period, “Class 1 electric bicycle usage is authorized on the Association trail and fire road system segments designated and regulated for their use through Association open space and trails policies.”

Summer 2022 was an initial trial period on fire roads and double track trails. After a successful trial period, Class 1 ebikes are now allowed anywhere mountain bikes are permitted, permissible through the above rule and the Trail and Open Space Master Plan.

MEET THE BOARD

Following the 2023 Board of Directors Election, the board welcomes back Stephen Mahoney and Courtney Murrell for their new three-year terms. Running unopposed, they were confirmed as returning directors by acclamation on April 28, 2023. Both Mahoney and Murrell bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the board in addition to their passion and dedication to the Tahoe Donner community.

STEVE MAHONEY COURTNEY MURRELL

Steve Mahoney grew up in Boston, one of seven children of a Boston police detective and a stay-at-home mom. He graduated from Middlebury College with a BA in Environmental Studies and Economics. While working full-time, Steve also earned an MBA from the University of Miami Graduate School of Business. In 2018, after a 40-year career in banking, he retired as a managing director in Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Global Debt Capital Markets business.

A work-related transfer from Chicago to San Francisco in 1995 introduced Steve and his family to the Sierras. He and his wife, Carole, have been Tahoe Donner homeowners since 2002. They enjoy hiking, skiing, paddleboarding, playing golf and hosting family gatherings with their daughter Erin, son Brendan and daughter-inlaw Aly, all of whom live in New York City. Steve, Carole and Riley, a West Highland Terrier, now call Tahoe Donner home full-time. Before his election to the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors in 2020, Steve served as the vice chairman of the Association’s Finance Committee. He is also on the board of directors of the Tahoe Donner Men’s Golf Club and a volunteer ski instructor with Achieve Tahoe, an adaptive sports program.

A California native, Courtney Murrell grew up in the East Bay, spending winters skiing with her family around Tahoe. She skiraced throughout her childhood and, while in college, won NCAA titles and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials and the USA Diving National Team for springboard and platform diving. She achieved her undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University and graduate degree at San Jose State University in exercise physiology.

Starting in Silicon Valley, Courtney worked diligently in the health field with Apple Computer and Coherent Inc. before transitioning into marketing. Her professional background, communication skills, energy and enthusiasm make her a voice of the people.

Following her parents, she and her family have lived in Tahoe Donner for over 20 years. Today, her youngest child is enrolled at Truckee High School, and her oldest is a U.S. Air Force Academy cadet. Courtney's involvement at Tahoe Donner includes kids camps, Aquatics activities and countless volunteer positions, in addition to 19 years as a fitness instructor at Trout Creek Recreation Center. A board member from 2013 to 2016 and again from 2020 to 2023, Courtney always brings a family focus to her work, improving the association. Her multigenerational connection to this community is the foundational source for her passion to revitalize Tahoe Donner.

Thank you to the entire Board of Directors who volunteer their time in guiding the Tahoe Donner Association and its efforts to maintain the vision and integrity of this unique mountain community. Learn more about Steve Mahoney, Courtney Murrell and the other board members at tahoedonner.com/board-of-directors

THE BUZZ: CLUBS

TD 9-HOLERS CLUB

It’s great to be playing golf in the Tahoe area once again! We enjoyed the start of our season playing on Wednesdays at Old Brockway, and for the summer, we’re at Tahoe Donner on Thursday mornings. We play shotgun-start stroke play, sometimes with extra games thrown in. Our annual tradition, the “President vs. Vice President Tournament,” and summer luncheon are scheduled for this month. August will include our two-week Summer Fun Tournament and festive dinner banquet. Our Twilight Golf Committee has monthly evening tournaments set up with friendly competition and social time for our members and their guests, and our Clinic Committee is continuing its series of informative, potluck get-togethers.

EQUESTRIAN CLUB

When visiting the Equestrian Center, stop by the club’s Little Lending Library box. Kids may borrow a book overnight or for up to a week. The library includes coloring books, easyreading children’s stories, novels for young adults and additional books on equestrian disciplines, horse breeds, horse care and training tips. If you have any horse-themed books you’d like to donate, simply leave them in the box, and we'll add them to the collection. Thank you!

WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB

The Women’s Golf Club began their season with nine holes, lunch and a members meeting. We also gave out awards for the 2022 season for Most Improved and Eclectics.

Congratulations to our most improved player, Coral Cavanagh, for lowering her index by over 4 points throughout our 2022 season. Eclectics tracks all club participants’ best scores for each hole across all the Tuesday game days.

May got us back out on the trails in Nevada to avoid the snow. We visited El Dorado Canyon, Como, Sand Mountain, the Fairview Peak Earthquake Fault, Cabin Under the Boulder, BerlinIchthyosaur State Park, Middlegate Station, the Shoe Tree and Virginia City. El Dorado Canyon had some challenging new features due to winter erosion of the old road requiring spotting through the rocks. We were expecting rough conditions from prior reports of the trail to Cabin Under the Boulder but found much of the road recently graded. We also enjoyed seeing the donkeys at the Marietta Wild Burro Range and checking out the old rock foundations of Marietta. Due to lingering snow, we moved our first run in June to the lower-elevation

Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park. We also continued our Nevada exploration with a run to the always-facilitating, petroglyph-rich Lagomarsino Canyon and the challenging Bronco Canyon. To join/sign up for runs and socials, please visit the TD4WD Club Website at TD4Wheelers.org. Dues are $10 per year.

SENIOR ALPINE SKI CLUB

What an incredible winter we‘ve had. Many of our club members have enjoyed spring corn at Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Meadows in June, and we’re excited to be skiing until July 4! But even with all the skiing, we’re also having fun with summer activities.

On June 13, we enjoyed our first bike tour as a group, a “Tour de Truckee” ride from the Regional Park along various bike paths, followed by lunch. A gettogether is planned for Closing Day at Alpine Meadows on July 4, with skiing and an après ski gathering and picnic. The club also plans kayak trips, BBQs, Regional Park Wednesday night concerts and tennis and pickleball events throughout the summer.

QUILT CLUB

The longer and warmer days have brought us back to outdoor activities. I see a lot of people biking and walking throughout the community. The golf course is open, and trail work has resumed. And with each day, there are more and more wildflowers and beautiful potted gardens on front stoops to admire. Summer is here!

The summer has also brought with it more quilters. Welcome back, everyone! This season, we will continue our work on quilts for the Baby and Me project and the Soroptimist Teen Closet. We are also discussing another project for veterans. If you want to learn more about the Tahoe Donner Quilt Club and what we do, please contact Odette at odette.turmel@gmail.com. Quilters of all levels are welcome.

MEN’S GOLF CLUB

Please Note: Our meeting location has changed. We now meet at Pizza on the Hill on the first and third Wednesday of the month, from 3-5PM. Happy summer!

Our members are active year-round in all the sports and activities our worldrenowned “Tahoe” has to offer! We hope you’ll join us. Please visit our website at tdski.com for club information and details for upcoming events throughout the year.

JUNIOR GOLF CLUB

The TD Men’s Golf Club offers Wednesday morning rounds for the casual golfer. These low-stress games tee off at 8:30AM every Wednesday during summer. If you’re interested in meeting new golfers, playing some fun rounds and hanging out afterward at the newly-updated Lodge Pavilion, sign up for the Tahoe Donner Men’s Golf Club by visiting the website at tdgolfclub.com or by emailing our Member Chair Michael O’Connell at oconnell.tdgolf@gmail.com.

KARATE CLUB

With a late start to the golf season, the annual championship tournament seems to be upon us quicker than ever. Come join us for this fun all-levels tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 2. Participants will be divided into flights commensurate with their skills, experience and age. Each player plays their own ball through the entire course.

Younger and less-experienced golfers will play a nine-hole tournament beginning with a mountain course putting challenge. Players may tee off from the blue or yellow tees, 200-yard tees or orange 150-yard tees, depending on their skill level. Older and more experienced golfers will play a full 18-hole round. In addition to tee gifts, every player will take home a prize, where each participant picks one from the prize table in the order of their flight finish.

We will also need parent volunteers to drive kids in carts, sign players in, pass out tee gifts and help with lunch. For any questions, please call the Pro Shop at (530) 587-9443 ext. 3 or parent coordinators Russ and Jean Lai directly at (530) 582-0673. We look forward to sharing a great day with all the young golfers!

International Karate League (IKL) is a modified Shorin Ryu founded in 1958 by Walter Nishioka, Shihan. The Tahoe Donner Karate Club was started in February of 2022 by Sensei Suz Field, fourth-degree black belt. Members are encouraged to participate at their own pace to achieve personalized goals. This martial arts style improves physical fitness, balance, strength and flexibility while students learn self-defense. The club also provides opportunities for participation in karate tournaments, competing in kata and kumite events. Club members are currently of various ranks, ages and abilities. The TD Karate Club is year-round and offered twice weekly. The club also hosts several social events. THE DOG WHO RAISES THE MOST FUNDS FOR GOOD WILL BECOME TAHOE DONNER DOG MAYOR

HELP YOUR FAVORITE DOG WIN

VOTE WITH YOUR DONATION OR SIMPLY DONATE FOR GOOD

Help put the “fun” in “fundraising” by donating to the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund Summer Campaign. Elect Tahoe Donner’s first Dog Mayor with donations that support local students and nonprofits and make our community a better place to live, work and play.

Why have we “gone to the dogs?” Some suggest there are almost as many dogs as people in Tahoe Donner. During the dog days of summer, these “good dogs” are helping raise essential funds. Here’s how:

Visit tahoedonner.com/dog-mayor for links to vote with your donation dollars for your favorite canine candidate for Tahoe Donner Dog Mayor.

You can also donate to the Giving Fund’s “General Fund” if you prefer to make a general donation.

You can designate your donation to scholarships or grants, and you can make your gift anonymous if you prefer.

Donations support local student scholarships and nonprofit grants through the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund, an affiliate fund of the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation.

Vote with your donations through July 31. This is one election where it’s okay to say, “Vote early, vote often!”

WHY WE GIVE

“With your partnership, we are able to transform the lives of some of our most vulnerable neighbors.”

“With TDGF-provided support to our trail-building efforts in Martis Valley’s Waddle Ranch, we now have a five-mile nonmotorized trail suitable for hiking, running and mountain biking.”

Founded in 2014, the Tahoe Donner Board-chartered Tahoe Donner Giving Fund Committee raises more than $100,000 annually through fundraising campaigns to support local student scholarships and nonprofit grants. In addition, an anonymous Tahoe Donner homeowner generously donates $200,000 annually for IMPACT scholarships. The Tahoe Donner Giving Fund is an affiliate fund of the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, tax #68-0416404. All contributions are voluntary and are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

Fire Season –Watches, Warnings + Bans

Each summer, wildfire risk grows with warmer weather, low relative humidity, strong winds and lightning strikes. Below is a quick-reference guide to fire weather watches, red flag warnings and seasonal fire bans.

FIRE WEATHER WATCH + RED FLAG WARNINGS ARE YOU PREPARED FOR A WILDFIRE?

Established by the National Weather Service, fire weather watches in California are issued when conditions conducive to wildfire may occur within 12-72 hours. Red flag warnings are the highest alert during a fire weather watch, where residents and visitors to the area are urged to practice extreme caution, take measures to prevent wildfires and plan for emergencies.

DURING A RED FLAG WARNING:

• All open flames are prohibited within the boundaries of the Truckee Fire Protection District (this includes gas flame and other outdoor cooking devices normally exempt under the District’s seasonal burn ban ordinance).

• The use of power tools for home and yard maintenance is strongly discouraged.

• Visit CodeRED to sign up to receive red flag alerts and all other emergency alerts from Truckee Fire Protection District.

• As always, please exercise extreme caution!

• If you see any violation of these guidelines during an active red flag warning, do not hesitate to call 911. These warnings are issued to prevent a major incident, and community vigilance is always appreciated.

To learn more about red flag alerts and other fire-related warnings from the National Weather Service, visit weather.gov/fire.

Tahoe Donner residents are urged to remain aware of wildfire threats within the area, take measures to reduce the risks of fire dangers and ensure they and their families are prepared in the event of an evacuation. Various resources are available online to help homeowners address defensible space around their homes and devise a plan if an evacuation becomes necessary.

SIGN-UP FOR EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS

Be sure to register with CodeRED to receive all emergency-related notifications by visiting nevadacountyca.gov/2713/Emergency-Alerts

KNOW YOUR ZONE

Visit community.zonehaven.com to determine your evacuation zone so that you are prepared if evacuations become necessary.

PRACTICE DEFENSIBLE SPACE

Visit tahoedonner.com/defensible-space to learn more about Tahoe Donner’s defensible space programs.

BE READY FOR EMERGENCIES

LEARN WHAT CAPITAL PROJECTS ARE TAKING PLACE THIS SUMMER AT TAHOE DONNER

This summer, the Capital Projects team is working hard to enhance various facilities and spaces. Whether it’s an elevated outdoor dining experience, new bocce courts or an improved hiking trail, there are a variety of projects recently completed this spring and scheduled for construction this summer and fall to improve your Tahoe Donner experience.

THE LODGE PAVILION

Construction at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub is nearly complete. Enhancements to the outdoor family dining area include a newly expanded paver patio, semi-permanent large-scale umbrellas, fire pit and fire tables, patio and festoon lighting and landscaping improvements. Along with the Pavilion, walkways around the building and in the Grotto are being regraded to meet ADA requirements and new pavers are being added to provide a refreshed and elegant look.

SNOWMAKING AT ALDER CREEK ADVENTURE CENTER

All snowmaking infrastructure was successfully completed last fall. The contractor is working on the completion of the pumphouse this summer. Please be advised that the area around the pumphouse is still closed due to construction activities.

THE LODGE PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS

Planned improvements will bring the ADA parking areas at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub into compliance and improve the walkway to the upper parking area. New stairs and an enhanced walkway connecting the upper and lower parking lots will incorporate a hydronic ice-melt system and new bollard lighting. Construction is scheduled for fall.

ALDER CREEK ADVENTURE CENTER TRAILHEAD REALIGNMENT

Construction of the new trailhead kiosk, boardwalk and turnpike trail located at the northeast corner of the Alder Creek Adventure Center parking lot was completed last fall. The old Alder Creek Trail is now permanently closed. Decommissioning and restoration, including the installation of fencing and natural barriers and willow stake and wetland sod plug planting, will start as soon as conditions permit. Please help protect this fragile environment by respecting the closure.

DOWNHILL SKI LODGE

Tahoe Donner is currently working through the Town of Truckee’s planning approval process. Construction is anticipated to start in 2024.

NEVADA COUNTY WILDFIRE RESILIENCE SURVEY

Nevada County Office of Emergency Services is updating the County Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which will support

communities like Tahoe Donner in taking action to protect the places they value from wildfire and help prioritize wildfire risk reduction activities.

The survey is available in English and Spanish and is open to Nevada County residents, property owners and the Nevada County workforce through Aug. 31. Visit ReadyNevadaCounty.org/CWPP to complete the survey.

STAY OFF WET OR MUDDY TRAILS + BECOME A TRAIL STEWARD

With winter conditions that have extended late into spring and early summer, trail conditions are variable. Please avoid wet or muddy trails to prevent damage or erosion. Repairing the trail system can be costly to fix, and any degradation can negatively impact the surrounding environment and ecosystems. Please also note that Coyote Crossing is closed until further notice due to winter damage. Explore how you can help maintain the trails as a volunteer. The Tahoe Donner Land Management Department offers Stewardship Days throughout the summer, focusing on building new trails or repairing existing ones and ecological restoration of the surrounding landscape. Visit tahoedonner.com/trails to learn more about volunteer opportunities, site visits, guided tours and more.
