MESSAGE FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER

Dear members,

I hope you have been enjoying this summer at Tahoe Donner as much as I have. With open amenities and relaxed COVID-19 restrictions, the opportunities to explore are endless. One of my favorite ways to get outdoors is to go mountain biking down into Euer Valley. If you stop by Bikeworks beforehand, staff can either set you up on one of our many bike options or simply recommend places to explore. The golf course is also the best it has played in years with new greens, enhanced maintenance and more than $2M in additional renovations. Our Pro Shop can help you schedule lessons, purchase golf equipment or just get the lay of the land. Play packs are also available for the summer season, which are an affordable way to get a few rounds in on our incredible new course. Learn more about how you can get out and explore the amenities on page 16.

ENJOY TAHOE DONNER A project that I am really excited to share is the new initiative called “Enjoy Tahoe Donner” this summer to help you enjoy all there is in our community. As you are all aware, Tahoe Donner is known for its outdoor recreation and diverse community offering. The Enjoy Tahoe Donner campaign helps to connect members to their neighbors and their community through fun events and happenings, including: • Family playground meetups • Yoga on the meadow outside Northwoods Clubhouse • Returning events like the Summer Concert on the Green • Trail runs with the TD Running Club • Senior highlights at the Truckee Recreation Center

To learn more about meeting your neighbors and enjoying our unique mountain community, visit tahoedonner.com/enjoy-tahoe-donner.

MICROTRANSIT SYSTEM Starting June 25, the Town of Truckee launched TART Connect, a free and on-demand shared shuttle service in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee. Similar to Uber or Lyft, this pilot program offers a way to travel around Truckee without using your vehicle. Pickups and destinations include Tahoe Donner, Glenshire, the Tahoe Forest Health System and downtown Truckee. To download the TART Connect app and start exploring, visit tahoedonner.com/tart-microtransit.

2022 BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION RESULTS At the time of press, we are heading into election weekend, but by the time this magazine reaches your mailbox, the association will have announced the winners of the 2022 Board of Directors Election. Thank you to all who voted this year, to all who ran for a seat and to the Elections Committee volunteers for facilitating the election cycle. Your participation helps to keep our association great. FIRE SAFETY REMINDERS Summer means lake paddles and singletrack adventures, but it also means preparedness for wildfires or other natural disasters. Tahoe Donner is committed to safety when it comes to educating, communicating and providing resources to members, and an online web hub is available for you to use as a constant resource. I encourage you to become familiar with documents like the TD Evacuation and Emergency Preparedness Guide at tahoedonner.com/preparedness.

Grabbing Life by the Matterhorns By ALI DICKSON | Photos courtesy of JEFF LINDGREN, MARGARET ARTHOFER and XSIGHT VIDEO

One of the most extraordinary aspects of Tahoe Donner is its membership. All ages, backgrounds, interests and abilities can be found at our amenities and throughout our community. When it comes to Darcy Cole, a member since 1994, that reminder of community was sparked through a Nextdoor post about her older brother that quickly snowballed into an outpouring of generosity. Darcy’s brother, Jeff Lindgren, was diagnosed with glioblastoma last year and will climb the Matterhorn in Switzerland this August to raise awareness and donations for the Glioblastoma Foundation. The response and encouragement from his mission has been nothing short of inspiring.

The Diagnosis In April 2021, Jeff Lindgren was living an ordinary life with his wife, Margaret, when he started feeling a little off. “I noticed I was having a harder-than-usual time getting my head around what I needed to do that day. In a career of mortgage lending and owning my own business, I tend to stay fairly organized, but it was weird that I couldn’t seem to focus on the things I needed to do.”

After taking a trip to the emergency room and ruling out a stroke, doctors ordered an MRI and presented their findings. “Lo and behold, I had a mass on my temporal lobe. I was rushed down to a neurocenter and met with a neuro-oncologist who said it was probably glioblastoma. It is the most common primary brain tumor – meaning it doesn’t metastasize from somewhere – but it is also the deadliest. Statistics are pretty grim.”

What is Glioblastoma? According to the Glioblastoma Foundation, “Glioblastoma (also known as Glioblastoma multiforme or GBM) is the most aggressive type of tumor that arises in the brain. It is one of the most lethal forms of brain cancer. The current standard of care (consisting of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy) is ineffective, and the median survival of a person diagnosed with glioblastoma is about 15 months; without treatment, it is a paltry 3-6 months.” Jeff considers himself lucky in his treatment thus far, which started with immediate surgery. “Only four or five days after the diagnosis, I went in for brain surgery to have the tumor removed. Removing a glioblastoma tumor is like trying to pull Bermuda grass out of your lawn – it almost always comes back. Part of my treatment involves an MRI every eight weeks to keep tabs on any new growth or development. I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve shown no growth so far.” As part of his treatment, Jeff wears adhesive transducers on his head to send electrical currents through his brain, confusing the

tumor cells to prevent them from dividing. Beyond the transducers, though, he is free to continue adventuring like any other 60-yearold, and the idea of adventure has been a driving factor in his life these days.

to choose from, it wasn’t hard to find a route that broke a sweat and strengthened key muscles. After their hike, both siblings went to Granite Chief, a local outdoor gear shop in Truckee, to look for additional gear. What they found was more than just products – they found hope.

Finding the Things That Matter(horn)

Jeff is always open to talk about his disease to spread awareness and understanding, and while talking about glioblastoma and his upcoming trek at the gear shop, an employee made a donation to the Glioblastoma Fund before Jeff and Darcy even had the chance to check out. Darcy shared the positivity on Nextdoor, and the post ended up with over 150 reactions and some generous donations.

As Jeff continues his treatment, he has had time to develop and hone an unprecedented mission: to climb the Matterhorn in Switzerland in August 2022 in order to raise awareness for glioblastoma and funding for the Glioblastoma Foundation. Growing up, Jeff was often climbing boulders, doing handstands from high spots and probably making his mother very nervous. When his family would take their annual pilgrimage to Yosemite, Jeff would look upon the park’s climbers as if they were superhuman. He and his wife were even married in Yosemite, and you can bet he brought his gear along for a quick climb after the ceremony. When it comes to his ability to take on this mountaineering challenge, Jeff is ready to stand out in the crowd. “I have the rope skills and am familiar with climbing and heights and exposures. I know thousands of people have climbed the Matterhorn, but I might be the first to climb it with glioblastoma. And if nothing else, I had both hips replaced at the same time years ago, so I’ll probably be the first to climb it with glioblastoma and two fake hips!”

“My brother was explaining to two of the people who work at GC that he was preparing to climb the Matterhorn in Switzerland as a fundraiser for the Glioblastoma Foundation. My brother was diagnosed with this terrible brain cancer 13 months ago. Most patients don't make it more than a year. Before we left, worker Jeremy Bell had already donated to the Foundation in my brother’s name. We were so touched by his thoughtfulness and Marley [Anderson]’s offer to help my brother with corporate contacts.” Darcy shared her encounter for more than just the popularity – she shared it to show what community truly means. “It’s why I posted on Nextdoor – someone who didn’t even know Jeff or why we were at the store donated to a cause so close to us. It shows what a caring community we have. I don’t feel like that would happen in other areas, and that’s part of what makes this community feel so close.”

Tahoe Donner and Truckee Support

Rising to the Challenge

Jeff often trains by hiking canyons in the Auburn area and building upper-body strength in the gym. This spring, his sister, Darcy Cole, encouraged him to train on the Tahoe Donner trails, taking advantage of the association’s swift elevation gains and highaltitude trail system. With a variety of options and difficulty levels

As Jeff wraps up his training and turns his eye towards the Matterhorn, Darcy looks back on how proud she is of her brother, both in the past 14 months and throughout her life. “My brother, who is five years older than me, has always challenged me to keep up. He dared me to take the most difficult runs on the ski slopes,

jump from big heights off bridges into lakes or hard cut in slalom waterskiing. He is never prouder of me than when I rise to his tests of courage. “Now, I see him being challenged by glioblastoma brain cancer, and he is proving to be the superhero that I have always thought he was. Even his wound after brain surgery healed so quickly that it was as if he has a supernatural healing power. He is truly amazing!” Jeff’s wife, Margaret, has also been an incredible source of strength and support. She encourages him to eat well to heal and to keep his strength and has developed a method of removing the electrode patches that he wears on his head. They were asked to be ambassadors for the device so other patients and families can use them as a resource. No matter the situation in Jeff’s life, it’s all about mind over matter. “Your mind will believe whatever you tell it to do. I’m telling my mind that I can climb the Matterhorn, and I’m telling my mind that I can beat this thing. My wife and my kids tell me that if anyone can beat this, I can, and that makes me happy. It’s all about what you believe you can do.”

he is planning for more than just a summit. “I’m doing this not only for altruistic reasons; some of it is to just wring more adventure out of this life. I want to do something that might be inspiring to other folks. This summit might not just encourage others to donate money but might inspire other patients who have been diagnosed. I want to inspire them to keep on living and grabbing life by the horns.” While Jeff is funding his mountaineering mission on his own and companies like Patagonia are donating gear for his climb, he has created a fundraising goal of $100,000 through the Glioblastoma Foundation to transform glioblastoma therapy and fund research for a cure. To donate, please use the QR code found below. In June, Jeff spent four days near North Cascades National Park in Washington participating in an alpine rock-climbing course run by the same outfit that will be guiding him in Switzerland. With airline tickets booked, guide services secured, base hut accommodations reserved and excitement growing, follow Jeff’s journey through his QR code. To learn more about glioblastoma, please visit glioblastomafoundation.org or use the QR code below.

A Community Inspiration Jeff’s story is inspiring not only for those who have glioblastoma but for anyone who feels an innate desire to take this one life as far and as wide as possible. To feel your blood flowing through your legs and your heart pumping takes life away from the everyday and into the extraordinary. A super-survivor is someone who lives at least five years after their glioblastoma diagnosis, and as Jeff preps for the climb of a lifetime,

A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE

The past two and a half years have seen big changes in Tahoe Donner. COVID-19 created isolation from neighbors. Over 900 properties were bought and sold. Part-time residents became full-time members. Projects big and small created significant member interest. Even with all these changes and returns to in-person experiences, Tahoe Donner still encompasses a passion for outdoor recreation and a celebration of the Tahoe lifestyle. Whether you’re a new face or a familiar one, a new initiative is being launched this summer to help you connect to all the excitement right here in your community: Enjoy Tahoe Donner.

WorldClass Biking

In Your Own Backyard

TH ER E’ S SO M E T H I N G FO R E V ERY BIK ER S TA R T I N G AT BIK E WO RK S By ALI DICKSON

Biking on the Tahoe Donner trail system is more than just a way to spend a day. With over 60 miles of trails, a rental shop boasting the newest bike models, professional instructors to help you improve your skill and a repair shop to fix everything in between, Bikeworks is your one-stop shop for all your two-wheeled adventures this summer.

TOP-TIER FLEET Not all bikes are made the same, which is why Bikeworks offers a quality inventory year after year. Dave Walker, Tahoe Donner Bike Program Manager, shares, “We replace part of our fleet every year to make sure our rentals are always a top priority. Especially if you’re a new rider, the nicer the bike, the easier you can progress and move up in the trail system.”

KATEY HAMILL

Bikeworks offers a variety of bikes, from mountain bikes to road bikes to trailer attachments so the little ones can join in the fun. The most popular bikes that come out of the shop are the mountain bikes, though, so Dave makes sure the models he stocks are some of the best. “For a mountain bike that can get you through obstacles but also keep you comfortable as you cruise, the Liv Pique for women is hard to beat. The full-suspension setup and handling make learning and improving a piece of cake.” The Giant Trance, the male version of the Liv Pique, provides the same comfort and capability on the trail. On top of quality products, all Tahoe Donner members receive 10% off bike rentals. Add in a complimentary helmet, and you’ve got yourself a quality setup you can’t find anywhere else. Dave shares, “It’s one of the coolest ways to get into a sport if you’re a member. The discount for members on these rentals and the ability to hop on one of the best trail systems around right from your neighborhood – it’s pretty special.”

LESSONS + CLINICS You have your bike. You grabbed a trail map. Your helmet is strapped. Now what? Turn to the experts to help you find your flow on the trails! Whether you want a personalized private lesson or a guided ride, professional instructors who are familiar with your bike, the skills and the trails will make you feel like a pro in no time. Especially if you have a family looking to up their game, Dave encourages everyone to take advantage of the private lessons. “Every private lesson is two hours with an experienced instructor. You can be a total beginner or want to hone a certain skill, but up to two students can join in each lesson, so the kids can take a lesson together or the parents can get out and learn together.” If you haven’t frequented the trails but don’t necessarily need a lesson, a guided tour is your ticket to ride. Usually between 1.5 and 2 hours, a guide will show you around the trail system while offering a few pointers along the way. Your route choice is up to you depending on your fitness and skill, so you can be sure to enjoy the flow from start to finish. With a two-person minimum group size, this is something the whole family can get behind! To reserve a tour or lesson, visit shop.tahoedonner.com.

REPAIR SHOP If you’ve got a bike, one of the best-kept secrets in Truckee is the Bikeworks repair shop. Tune-ups, overhauls and even a flat tire fix are all right in your community with a faster turnaround time than other bike shops in town. Dave shares, “We really pride ourselves on our ability to take in bikes and turn them around to get you back on the trail as fast as possible. The bike business has boomed over the past two years since the pandemic, so we know how important it is that you’re on the trail quickly.” No reservations are necessary – just bring in your bike, and a shop employee will walk you through the repair process. Mule’s Ears and Aspen Groves By CHARLOTTE GROSS

Whether I’m guiding seven-year-olds on their first mountain bike ride, or seeking singletrack Zen, I have a route in mind. From my mental map of the Tahoe Donner trail system I pick a loop that offers the gentlest pedal, or most rollicking downhill, or best chance of spotting a coyote slipping into tree shadows.

the grove to bask in the orange glow. Yellow leaves lay like coins on the trail.

In early summer, I drop into Euer Valley, bright with mule’s ear flowers. The meadow dries to gold in fall. With a pack of bike camp kids in tow, ascending Mustang Sally for lupine and crimson snowplants is a top choice. If you follow our tracks, you might catch a glimpse of the shy bear who’s been sniffing around the willows up there.

Whether on a Bikeworks rental or your own two-wheeled steed, exploration is endless. Remain within the mapped trail system, or connect to Emigrant Trail, Johnson Canyon and terrain beyond. The Donner Lake Rim Trail is a favorite with the bike camp kids. You, too, can orchestrate your own shuttle drop-off at Glacier Way Trailhead. Cruise along the crest to Drifter Hut, basking in unobstructed views the entire way. Descend all the way to the center where food, cold drinks and your ride await. Better yet, follow the neighborhood trails home for a satisfying adventure.

The question I field most in autumn is, “Where can I find aspens?” I know just the place. Trace the swooping curves of Whoop It Up to the southeastern corner of the trail system. When I took a friend there last year, we stopped our bikes in

When the Adventure Center bustles with other trail-goers, I mount up and pedal to the top of Hawk’s Peak. There, at the cruising height of ravens, you can also drink in the full panorama of granite peaks, Jeffery pine and the blue lake below.

TD MTB Club The TD Mountain Biking Club is a great way to meet other bikers and enjoy the trail system together while learning more about your bike and community along the way. Group ride opportunities include: • Third Saturday of each month: Group bike rides at the Alder Creek Adventure Center hosted by TD Mountain Biking Club • Every second Friday of the month: Group ladies’ rides at the Alder Creek Adventure Center hosted by TD Mountain Biking Club

DISTRICT-WIDE FIRE BAN THE TRUCKEE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT IMPLEMENTED THE DISTRICT-WIDE FIRE BAN ON BACKYARD-TYPE CAMPFIRES AND OTHER DEVICES ON JUNE 1, 2022.

www.MS-AC.com

The fire danger in California continues year to year, and the Truckee area is no exception. Each year, the Truckee Fire Protection District responds to unattended or improperly extinguished residential campfires that escape the fire ring and start a wildfire. If this happens on a windy day, it can be devastating to our community. The fire ban ordinance was established as a tool to help the district minimize these types of incidents, which have potentially catastrophic consequences for this region. Do your part in helping reduce fire hazards this year by modeling fire-safe practices and decisions.

COURT LEVE

We are relishing the golf here at Tahoe Donner this summer, with weekly league play on Thursday mornings and our series of improver clinics. In addition, our casual Twilight Play evenings are opportunities to bring guests for some friendly competition and social time. Our annual President vs. Vice President Tournament in July will determine the winner of the coveted “Broken Putter” prize, and afterward, we’ll enjoy The Lodge’s hospitality for our summer luncheon. This event includes a presentation of tournament awards and a drawing for great prizes! Our friendly, supportive club is a great way to meet super gals and improve your game through easy-tofit-in, inclusive nine-hole play. If you’re thinking of joining us next year and you’re just learning the game, now is a great time to take some lessons, hit the range, work on your putting and chipping, and get in some practice rounds. For club information, email td9hole@gmail.com.

WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB Our arrival happened to be on the first day of the season that the fire tower was staffed. Shelley Purcer, with her dog Betsy, has been the primary lookout at Babbitt Peak for years, and she does a great job of helping to keep us safe. She’s been credited many times by the USFS for calling in fires, allowing for quick containment. The Women’s Golf Club has had an excellent start to the 2022 season with good turnout for our Tuesday play days. We are enjoying being back on our course and reconnecting with golf friends. We are pleased to welcome 13 new members to our club and hope they find the fun and relationships that bring us back year after year.

PICKLEBALL BASH SATURDAY, JULY 16 | 3PM TENNIS BASH SATURDAY, JULY 23 | 3PM Join the Tennis/Pickle Club for a full afternoon that includes a warmup clinic from our certified teaching staff, round-robin play and a BBQ and potluck feast. We recommend making the trip up to the tower – it’s worth the drive, and, while you’re there, give Shelley a big “thanks!” Please log into td4wheelers.org to view the trail run schedule.

We are looking forward to our Baja Vacation Guest Day on July 26, where each club member can host up to three guests. Registration forms have been emailed to club members and are due by July 15. For more information about the Women’s Golf Club, email tdwgclub@gmail.com.

These awards are made possible by one wonderful anonymous Tahoe Donner donor. The Traditional scholarships are one-time awards. Three students will each receive $4,500 and three others will each receive $2,000. These scholarships are funded directly by your warm-hearted donations. CONSTRUCTION CORNER LEARN WHAT CAPITAL PROJECTS ARE TAKING PLACE THIS SUMMER AT TAHOE DONNER The Capital Projects team is working hard to make improvements to various facilities and spaces this summer. Whether it’s a better cross country ski season, an improved hiking trail or an easier lunch spot at the marina, there are a variety of projects entering construction phases this summer and fall to improve your Tahoe Donner experience.

SNOWMAKING AT ALDER CREEK ADVENTURE CENTER Construction has resumed after beginning in fall 2021, and crews are currently completing the installation of underground pipes and hydrants, as well as constructing the pumphouse. In mid-July, the parking lot will be trenched to tie in utilities. Please be advised that there will be construction closures at times around the Alder Creek Adventure Center that will affect trails, the Equestrian Center and the parking lot. Project completion is expected by fall 2022.

ALDER CREEK ADVENTURE CENTER TRAILHEAD REALIGNMENT The Adventure Center is seeing a relocation of its trailhead and realignment of the trail away from the entrance to Alder Creek Adventure Center and the Alder Creek headwaters. A new boardwalk trail from the new trailhead at the northeast corner of the parking lot will be constructed this summer.

THE LODGE PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS Improvements are being made to bring the ADA parking areas at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub into compliance and improve the walkway to the upper parking area. The design is complete and permits are being submitted. Construction is planned for fall 2022.

THE LODGE PAVILION A casual outdoor family dining area is underway with the replacement of the existing paver patio at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub with a newly expanded paver patio. Additions to the space include a shade pergola with integrated heating and lighting, a fire pit area with seating and lawn/landscaping updates. Design details are being finalized and final plans will be submitted for permits. Construction is planned for fall 2022.

MARINA DECK + SHADE STRUCTURE This Beach Club Marina project includes an expanded deck with added glass windscreen, shade structure, fire pit, walk-up bar, barbecue space and additional landscaping elements, as well as a new storage building and ADA ramp. Design details are being finalized and final plans will be submitted for permits. Construction is planned for fall 2022.

ALDER CREEK ADVENTURE CENTER AIRFLOW Fans will be installed at the Alder Creek Adventure Center to improve airflow in the building during warmer summer months and evaluate whether additional improvements may be needed.

DOWNHILL SNOWMAKING | PHASE 2 Requests for proposals will be sent out soon to extend snowmaking up the Eagle Rock Chairlift at the Downhill Ski Resort in 2023.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE ON HOLE 18 DOWNHILL SKI LODGE The schematic design is completed for the replacement downhill ski lodge at the Downhill Ski Resort, and permits have been submitted. Construction is anticipated to start in 2023.

Design is beginning, and permits will be submitted in the fall of 2022 to update the bridge on Hole 18 of the Tahoe Donner Golf Course. The bridge will be constructed in 2023.

Periodic construction updates will be posted on the web at tahoedonner.com/capital-projects. Please use caution when around construction zones, pay attention to signage and closures and stay clear of active construction and heavy equipment.

TOWN UPDATES: TART + GENERAL PLAN

Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transportation (TART) Connect launched on June 25, 2022. The free, on-demand, shared shuttle service operating in North Lake Tahoe

has expanded to the Truckee area as a pilot project throughout the summer and includes free service in Tahoe Donner. To learn more, download the TART Connect mobile app or visit tahoetruckeetransit.com. The Town of Truckee is also preparing the 2040 General Plan and Downtown Specific Plan Update. The draft has been released online; to learn more about how to engage in the conversation and read the current draft, visit truckee2040.com.

THIRD EGRESS ROUTE UPDATE

The Town of Truckee has hired an engineering consultant team to analyze preliminary design alternatives, develop cost estimations, conduct a traffic analysis, perform baseline environmental studies to determine potential environmental impacts, and develop feasibility strategies for a third access route from Tahoe Donner to Downtown Truckee and Pioneer Trail. After completion of the initial studies, preliminary design work and feasibility analysis, the Town will conduct public outreach and utilize that information to help evaluate the prioritization and timeline of the project. Town of Truckee staff are planning to give the Tahoe Donner Association an update on the progress of the ongoing study in late 2022/early 2023.

ELECTION RESULTS

At the time of press, results were not available for the 2022 Tahoe Donner Board of Directors Election. Election day was June 26 – to see which candidates won, visit tahoedonner.com/board-election. Thank you to all who participated in this year’s election!

AMENITY ACCESS UPDATES

through a third-party service, F’inn Group. This summer, staff will analyze the survey feedback, develop options for the Recreation Fee structure and present these opportunities to the board during the 2023 budget process for consideration.
