MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Dear members,

After a snowy December full of family and togetherness, I wish you a hearty welcome to 2023!

One of my favorite ways to spend the winter is with my family at the Downhill Ski Resort. The jokes riding up the chairlift, the scenic runs down and lunch at the Downhill Ski Grill on those perfect bluebird days are memories that I will cherish forever. I hope you and your loved ones will get to experience your own memories in the making this winter season.

SKI SAFETY MONTH

Skiing truly is a winter fan-favorite in Tahoe Donner, but with all the excitement, ski safety is more important than ever. January is National Safety Month through the National Ski Areas Association, so before you hit the slopes, make sure you and your family know the safety protocols and responsibility codes. Tips include:

• Always put the bar down – yes, even adults should prevent any chairlift slips

• People ahead or downhill of you have the right of way, and it is your responsibility to avoid them

• Save ski patrol’s phone number in your phone in case of injury, lost gear or more

For even more tips and tricks, flip to page 8 or visit tahoedonner.com/responsibility-code

After great feedback and discussion in October, the board of directors made an exciting change in the Recreation Fee. New for the 2023/24 Rec Fee cycle (valid May 1, 2023, through April 30, 2024), a two-person option will be available for just $295. The

historically offered four-person option is also still offered with the ability to include up to eight member passes per property.

The Rec Fee is a convenient way to gain unrestricted free access to the Trout Creek Recreation Center, pools, marina, Tennis Center and Snowplay without paying daily fees. It is your family's ticket to Tahoe Donner fun!

MAILBOXES IN TAHOE DONNER

Over the past two years, staff and I have received many questions about mailboxes, and we understand the challenge many members face in securing one. The director of capital projects recently met with the USPS postmaster at Tahoe Donner, where they discussed potential changes in policy and discovered opportunities that could allow Tahoe Donner to add mailboxes and large parcel boxes in the community.

As staff continue to work with these new opportunities, USPS mailbox tips include:

• Put a hold on your mail with the Post Office if you are leaving the area

• Report damage to mailbox clusters at the Bridge Street post office

• Thank your local post office team for their hard work this season!

Visit tahoedonner.com/mailboxes-in-td to learn more.

DINING

Our goal is to provide a dining option for members seven days a week with staggered closed days.

A NEW LIBRARY + CULTURAL CENTER FOR TRUCKEE

Way back in 2008, a Nevada County Jury Report confirmed what most residents already knew; the Truckee library needed more space to serve its growing constituency. Constructed in 1975, when the town’s population was 2,000, the service area has now grown to over 20,000 people. What began with an official report almost 15 years ago has become an unofficial movement over the last decade and a half to update the modest facility –until now.

LIBRARY UP IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES

In 2019, in partnership with local public agencies including Nevada County, the Town of Truckee, Truckee-Donner Rec & Park District, Truckee Donner Public Utility District and Truckee Sanitary District, Friends of the Truckee Library (FOTL) began the LibraryUP initiative, a campaign to raise awareness and resources for the development of a new library and cultural center. Founded on the belief that strong libraries are central to strong communities, FOTL is encouraging everyone to “imagine

the possibilities” of how a modern library could impact the local community. From promoting early literacy and a love of reading to providing a place for book lovers, writers and poets to come together and be inspired, libraries have always been essential in supplementing the arts, education and culture. A new library facility could not only continue to offer these opportunities but also provide so much more.

MORE THAN A NEW SPACE

In leading the effort to construct a new 20,000-square-foot library at a designated site at the Regional Park, FOTL envisions much more than a conventional library. The

new building would not only house a much larger collection of free books but provide meeting spaces for collaborative work and a gathering place for community events and workshops. In their own words, FOTL wants to build connection with “a space that is warm, spacious and welcoming for all and large enough to accommodate the growing needs of our unique mountain community.”

Designed with the input of Truckee’s diverse constituency, the new library will be safe, accessible, equitable and inclusive, where the community is enriched by access to books, resources, technology and county services. It would be a place for all.

TAHOE DONNER’S MARY ELLEN CLIFFORD WANTS YOU TO LIBRARY UP FOR TRUCKEE!

Tahoe Donner is a uniquely special association with so many of its members devoted to philanthropic work within the greater Truckee community. One such member, Mary Ellen Clifford, is committed to ensuring that the children and young students of Truckee are afforded additional opportunities to learn through improved library services. Serving as the treasurer for Friends of the Truckee Library for the past two years, Clifford has been integral in the organization’s LibraryUP initiative –a campaign to raise awareness and resources to help build a new public library in collaboration with the project’s agency partners.

“When I first heard of the new library project two years ago, I knew immediately that this was a project I wanted to become involved with. I was fortunate to be asked to join the board of the Friends of the Truckee Library, and the time I spend volunteering as treasurer is one of the most engaging and rewarding of my career,” says Clifford.

A LOVE FOR LIBRARIES AT A

YOUNG AGE

Clifford’s love of libraries started as a young child. A place of comfort and solace, her time spent immersed in library books helped shape her future. She recollects, “I would sit on a footstool in the stacks reading children’s fiction every afternoon after school until my parents picked me up

after work. I was able to help my parents finance my college tuition by working in the campus library filing in the card catalog and covering hardbacks.”

Given her experience, Clifford believes that libraries provide countless opportunities for children and young students to expand their knowledge beyond the parameters of school. Through books and other services offered by public libraries, children learn to appreciate learning new things and see the value in higher education in a supportive setting that encourages them to imagine the possibilities of their own future.

AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE

Clifford became a part-time resident of Tahoe Donner in 2001, after many winter seasons of shared ski cabins and the

weekend commute from the Bay Area. Since her retirement from Intel Corporation’s Treasury Department in 2008, Clifford has traveled often to her home state of Texas to care for her family and spend time with lifelong friends. But she is proud to call Tahoe Donner home, where she makes the most of her outdoor lifestyle skiing, playing tennis and hiking with fellow members of various TD clubs.

Clifford remains inspired by the vibrant Truckee community that utilizes the current library building and its humble resources. And of the library project, she believes a larger and more modern library facility is an investment into the community that would offer broader opportunities for learning and creative expression for people of all ages and for generations to come.

Every year, ski resorts around the country celebrate January as National Safety Awareness Month in partnership with the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and supported by Ski California®. It benefits everyone to stay safe on the snow; Tahoe Donner is committed to creating an environment that allows skiers and riders of all abilities and ages to shred safely and confidently. On the following pages are important tips and rules to help keep everyone

STOKED ON SAFETY!

FEATURE

KNOW THE CODE: IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

“Your Responsibility Code” is a universally accepted code of conduct provided by NSAA that is recognized throughout the U.S. and applies to everyone on the mountain.

Always stay in control. You must be able to stop or avoid people or objects.

People ahead or downhill of you have the right-of-way. You must avoid them.

Stop only where you are visible from above and do not restrict traffic.

Look uphill and avoid others before starting downhill or entering a trail.

You must prevent runaway equipment.

Read and obey all signs, warnings and hazard markings.

Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.

You must know how and be able to load, ride and unload lifts safely. If you need assistance, ask the lift attendant.

Do not use lifts or terrain when impaired by alcohol or drugs.

If you are involved in a collision or incident, share your contact information with each other and a ski area employee.

Winter sports involve risk of serious injury or death. Your knowledge, decisions and actions contribute to your safety and that of others. If you need help understanding the Code, please ask any ski area employee.

COLLISION SAFETY

Safe shredding is everyone’s responsibility. When hitting the slopes this winter, be aware of your surroundings – and other skiers and riders – so you can avoid potentially life-altering collisions. Avoiding collisions is a simple three-step process and should be followed by all, regardless of experience:

Be Ready

You never know what kinds of hazards or obstacles may come up; always be prepared to slow down, maintain control and avoid others.

Stay Alert

Be aware of your surroundings, including other people and changing conditions.

Plan

Ahead

Slow down at blind spots, check uphill when merging onto trails and give other skiers plenty of room when passing. Always maintain a safe distance from other skiers and riders.

HELMET SAFETY

Helmets are for everyone, no matter the age or ability. Although a reported 90% of skiers and riders wore helmets in the 2021/22 season, the proper use of helmets should continue to be encouraged.

Get a helmet that fits properly – one size does NOT fit all. If you are worried about investing in a helmet for growing children, you can always rent one from the Downhill Ski Resort for the perfect fit each time your kids hit the slopes.

Tahoe Donner and NSAA encourage young adults ages 18-34 to wear helmets regardless of confidence or ability – this age group has the lowest rate of helmet adoption. No matter your experience, helmets could save you from unforeseen hazards as well as from injury in a collision with other skiers or riders.

Set a good example. Wearing helmets can encourage young groms to do the same! Kids learn from other skiers on the hill. Be a positive influence this season; always wear a helmet and ski in control.

TIPS FOR RESPONSIBLE LIFT USE

It’s your responsibility to know how to use and ride chairlifts safely.

Become familiar with the type of lift you are riding, and ask for help if you need it.

Before loading, remove backpacks and secure loose items. Remove pole straps from wrists.

Look over your shoulder to watch the approaching chair.

Sit all the way in the chair, with your back to the seat rest.

If the lift has a restraint bar, wait until everyone is seated before lowering the bar. Do not attempt to lower the bar if you cannot reach it! Adults should always help kids to lower the restraint bar.

Be aware of your surroundings while riding the lift. If you drop something, let it fall! You can always ask ski patrol for help retrieving lost items.

As you approach the top terminal, prepare to raise the bar. Look for signs advising you to do so to help with timing.

It’s Never Too Late (or Early!) to Learn to Ski

THE DOWNHILL SKI RESORT OFFERS LESSONS FOR BEGINNERS OF EVERY AGE

FEATURE

The older you get, the harder it can be to step out of your comfort zone. This is especially true of learning new things. Somewhere in adulthood, your inner pragmatist takes over to remind you that the risk may not necessarily be worth the reward. So why learn to ski as an adult? While it may be true that extreme skiing is not for the faint of heart, recreational skiing offers something for everyone. And with countless benefits for your health and well-being – even at the beginner level – it makes stepping out of your comfort zone and into a pair of ski boots well worth the effort.

Whether you want to keep up with your kids or find a passion all your own, the affordable prices and friendly faces at the Downhill Ski Resort can help you to gain the confidence to hit the slopes in no time.

The Best Place to Begin

Widely recognized as “the best place to begin,” Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort’s wide-open bowls, uncrowded slopes and gentle terrain offer a very welcoming vibe. With private and group lessons, ski and snowboard programs for adults and children as young as 3 years old, enthusiastic staff and a fully equipped rental shop, the resort is the ideal place to learn.

For Camy Bretin, a vibrant 20-something from Southern California who had recently relocated to Tahoe Donner full-time, learning (or re-learning) to ski was at the top of her list of upcoming winter activities. “When I was younger, my family and I would go to Big Bear in the winter where I used to take group ski lessons with my siblings and other kids. However, the last time I properly skied was in 2011, so I’m basically starting from scratch,” says Bretin.

Opting for a semi-private three-hour lesson, the ample time and personalized

When Learning Becomes a Legacy

HOW ONE LESSON BECAME A LIFELONG TRADITION FOR MY FAMILY

As a writer for Tahoe Donner News, I was elated with the task of joining Camy Bretin in her lesson. Like Bretin, I was a native of Southern California whose first skiing experiences were at Big Bear Lake. And much like my lesson partner, I hadn’t touched a pair of skis in almost 30 years.

Our instructor Jim Hentz was friendly, funny and very knowledgeable, but what struck me was his admission that he had only started skiing at 43. Granted, now at the ripe age of 75 that was over 30 years ago, but it served to remind us that we can learn new things at any age!

Hearing that also reminded me of my own mom who, on a courageous whim, decided that she wanted to learn to ski at 40. An immigrant from the tropical islands of the Philippines, skiing was a concept as foreign to her as the snow itself, but she was determined that we would all take a lesson. At 10 years old, I remember our trip to the sporting goods store for rental gear, the two-hour drive to our local mountain and my first ski suit – a one-piece the color of purple and pink highlighters! But what I truly won’t forget any time soon is how my mom fell in love with skiing.

From that first day on, skiing became our family’s winter tradition lasting well into my college years. We would spend every other weekend in Big Bear or Mammoth and even take an occasional vacation to Lake Tahoe. Even my dad, who is decidedly not a fan of the cold, prided himself on his grand cabin breakfasts to load us up for a day on the hill. Some of our best family memories were made on these trips.

Some years after my first lesson, I eventually hopped on the snowboarding trend. In college at UC Santa Barbara, I competed in a collegiate boardercross league, commuting on the weekends to Mammoth. When I met my husband during this time, I learned his family also had their own rich history with the sport of skiing.

When our kids were born, we continued the tradition of weekend ski trips, and eventually decided to move to this mountain paradise full-time. I’ve cherished watching my children develop a love for the sport, first in lessons, then on teams and now with their dad, who is also a ski coach. Skiing has become such an integral part of who we are as a family, much like it did when I was growing up, that I find myself compelled to return to where it all started – with a lesson.

As author William Arthur Ward aptly stated, “curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.” To lean into our curiosity and learn new things is to enrich our lives and the lives of those around us. What we learn can become our next passion, a new tradition or perhaps even a legacy for future generations. I’m thrilled that my kids can witness their mom learning to ski in the same way that I watched mine. I’m proud to set the example that it’s okay to be a beginner and that trying something new takes a little courage – or a lot – but we are all capable of learning at any age, and throughout every stage in our lives!

TAHOE DONNER NEWS | 13
Continued on page 14

instruction allowed Bretin to learn at her own pace. As she clicked into the bindings for the first time Bretin says, “I was a little nervous to get back on skis, but the rental staff helped me select the right equipment, and my instructor Jim Hentz’s sense of humor (and amazing mustache!) helped put me at ease.”

Learning With Confidence

Beginning with basic terminology, proper posture and stance and progressing into moving and stopping, instructors like Hentz teach the fundamentals in an easy-tounderstand and relatable way. According to Bretin, “Re-learning the proper stance was extremely helpful. I felt like I was more in control, which helped calm my nerves. But also hearing that he learned to ski as an adult reassured me that it wasn’t too late for me to learn too.”

Few activities allow you to fully immerse yourself in your surroundings. Skiing offers a unique perspective of the mountains that you wouldn’t be able to experience otherwise. For Bretin, a lesson helped her ease back into the sport in an enjoyable way where learning the basics became part of the fun. “I look forward to going out more and continuing to progress, but being taught the correct form and going through exercises to reinforce the basics has really helped my confidence the most.”

THE BUZZ: CLUBS

QUILT CLUB

Happy and healthy new year to all! We are here again with a blank page in front of us, ready to take on new projects – individually or as a group! Let’s think about our next community quilt design while we continue to help local charity organizations with baby quilts, adult clothing protectors, placemats, walker bags and more. Let’s share new ideas and techniques and hopefully welcome new members to share them with.

Our second community quilt is currently hanging inside Member Services at the Northwoods Clubhouse for all to see and will remain there until it is donated to the local hospice. We invite you to stop by and take a peek; I dare say it’s quite lovely!

Quilt Club meets in the Alder Room downstairs at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub from 1-3PM on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Please contact Odette at odette.turmel@gmail.com for more information and to learn about our latest projects.

4-WHEELERS CLUB

We had 13 vehicles – 23 adults, two kids and six dogs – on our ride to Virginia City. Taking the “hard way,” we started at the Jumbo Grade OHV Trailhead near Washoe Lake and rode the main trail into the south end of town, which includes portions of Ophir Grade. We saw lots of old mining diggings along the way and spent a couple of hours exploring Virginia City. Afterward, we headed up Spanish Ravine to the high trail and proceeded to the top of Ophir Hill (7,772 feet in elevation!) where we passed a majestic herd of wild horses on the mountainside. It was a steep, rocky climb but everyone made it through safely. The views from the top were definitely worth the effort. In total, we traveled 17.4 miles with 2,964 feet of elevation gain in our four-and-a-half-hour adventure. It was a great day!

TD 9-HOLERS CLUB

The TD 9-Holers board and committees are busy planning for the 2023 golf season! The online membership application process will start in March, and preseason events have been scheduled in March and April to allow us to catch up and get ready for summer golf. Our spring brunch and new member orientation will be held in May, and as soon as our course is open, we’ll begin regular Thursday morning play days.

The Clinics Committee is excited about the upcoming schedule of events, and our Starter/Scorer Committee is prepping for an especially fun season featuring “Game Days” to shake it up. In the meantime, we are enjoying winter recreation here in Tahoe Donner and golf in lower elevations. Our friendly, supportive club is a great way to meet new friends and improve your game through easy-to-fit-in, inclusive 9-hole play. For club info, email td9hole@gmail.com

NEWS FROM THE GIVING FUND

Tahoe Donner folks gave generously to the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund (TDGF) in their one-day “Unselfie” campaign on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022. Giving Tuesday is the global philanthropic movement that brings worldwide attention to organizations and causes in need. This year, your Giving Tuesday gifts totaled $9,179 – a record haul for the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund! This outpouring of kindness allows the TDGF to help students like Daphne and to aid nonprofits like the ones listed above in their important work.

Meet Daphne, one of the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund’s first recipients of an IMPACT Scholarship in 2019. One of four Truckee students to receive this honor, the TDGF is thrilled to update you on her progress since then. Daphne will be graduating from UC Riverside in the spring of 2023 with a major in Public Policy. An outstanding student, she is on the Chancellor’s Honor List with a GPA of 3.89. And last summer, Daphne interned for California State Assemblyman Jose Medina, an alumnus of UC Riverside. Under Assemblyman Medina, she helped preview bills and worked on his newsletter and social media accounts.

Daphne is interested in helping underserved communities and plans to pursue a law degree after graduating. In the meantime, she has applied to the UCLA Law Fellowship, which mentors and guides students until they apply to law school. “I deeply appreciate the support that this fund has given me and others who look to give back in the near future,” says Daphne. Her success is due to a combination of both her incredible work ethic and your generous donations to the TDGF.

The Tahoe Donner Giving Fund is chartered by the TD Board of Directors. All contributions are voluntary taxdeductible gifts from TD members and friends. The Giving Fund is administered through the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation. For more information on the Giving Fund or to make a contribution, visit our webpage at tahoedonner.com/giving-fund. Contact tdgf@tahoedonner.com with questions or to volunteer for the committee. We thank and are grateful for our founding partner, Elements Mountain Company, for their continuing support.

ONE PASS. UNLIMITED ACCESS.

MEMBERS CAN ENJOY TAHOE DONNER’S PRIVATE AMENITIES FOR FREE WITH THE 2023/24 RECREATION FEE

When you pay an annual Recreation Fee at Tahoe Donner, your member ID card allows you to enjoy unlimited access to Tahoe Donner’s private amenities free of charge. This includes the expansive Tennis Center, the exclusive Beach Club Marina, all the summertime fun at the Northwoods Pool and the state-of-the-art Trout Creek Recreation Center. The Rec Fee also allows you free admission to Snowplay all winter long, although advanced reservations are still required.

While there has historically been one rate for the Rec Fee, new for the 2023/24 cycle is a two-person Recreation Fee option ideal for smaller families! Learn more about the Recreation Fee and member card options below.

SAVE TIME AND MONEY WITH A PAID RECREATION FEE

Less time waiting means more time playing! Depending on which Recreation Fee option you choose, up to eight qualifying members of your household with ID cards can access Tahoe Donner private amenities without paying a Daily Access Fee. Upon arrival, simply scan your card or mobile pass and you are ready to go!

Daily Access Fees at private amenities apply for members who have not paid the Rec Fee. Visit tahoedonner.com/member-cards-rec-fee for complete details on member access policies.

GUEST ACCESS

Get your friends in on the fun with special guest access. Each property is provided two transferable cards for guests to enjoy private amenities. Daily Access Fees apply for guests, with or without a member present. Up to four people may gain access on a single transferable guest card. To learn more about guest access, visit tahoedonner.com/member-cards-rec-fee

MEMBER CARDS

When you pay your Annual Assessment at the beginning of the year, up to four member cards are included for qualifying members of your family. Any additional members added to your property, regardless of whether you want a Recreation Fee or not, cost $165 to add for the year. Having a member card allows cardholders to pay member rates at Tahoe Donner public amenities including for season passes to the Downhill Ski Resort, TDXC and the Golf Course, and access to private amenities at member rates.

2023/24 RECREATION FEE

Making sure your family is covered with a Recreation Fee has never been easier this year! New for the 2023/24 Recreation Fee, a twoperson option ($295) is available in addition to the four-person option ($460). This means you can choose a plan that best fits your family and your budget.

When you purchase a two-person Recreation Fee, both members are ready to go. When you purchase a four-person Recreation Fee, it automatically covers four members and any additional member passes purchased for $165 each, up to eight total. This means that when you purchase a four-person Rec Fee but still have additional member ID cards for your property, each additional member automatically qualifies for the Recreation Fee and all its benefits for the year!

HOW TO PURCHASE A 2023/24 REC FEE

The Recreation Fee can be paid online using the member portal at tahoedonner.com/member-portal or by calling Member Services at (530) 587-9400. Once you pay your Rec Fee, which begins May 1, 2023 and runs through April 30, 2024, all eligible members are free to use the Beach Club Marina, Snowplay, Northwoods Pool, Trout Creek Recreation Center and Tennis Center without having to pay a Daily Access Fee.

Please note that the Rec Fee is non-refundable and nontransferable; it is also not prorated, which means pricing remains the same price all year. If the 2023/24 Recreation Fee is paid at the same time as your Annual Assessment, access begins May 1, 2023, regardless of when you pay it.

To learn more about the Rec Fee and how you can get the most out of your amenities, visit tahoedonner.com/member-cards-rec-fee

WINTER TIPS AND HACKS FROM THE TAHOE DONNER STAFF

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO LIVING LIKE A LOCAL

As anyone who’s lived in Tahoe a while will tell you: Sierra Nevada winters can be wildly unpredictable. From powerful storms that can dump feet of snow overnight or traffic that can bring your day to a literal halt, each time you step out of the house can feel like an intrepid outdoor adventure. But that doesn’t mean you can’t master the art of snowy mountain living. Below are a few useful tips and tricks from the Tahoe Donner staff to help you weather the winter more like the locals and less like the Donner Party.

DRIVING SKIING + WINTER ADVENTURES

“Instead of using your brakes down steep roads, try downshifting to a lower gear to slow your vehicle down. You’re less likely to spin out.”

“Never drive with a pile of snow on your roof; it can slide forward onto your windshield, blocking your vision.”

“The easiest way to make friends with your neighbors is by offering to help them clear snow after a storm.”

“A good day on the trails requires adequate hydration, especially at altitude. Leave the coffee or beer for after your cross country ski session to keep you feeling good — not to mention there are no bathrooms on the trails.”

“Leave an insulated traveler mug of coffee in your car while you ski or ride, for a fresh cup of joe when you get back!”

“Always schedule an additional hour after a cross country ski day to enjoy an après beer at the Alder Creek Adventure Center fire pit.”

FEATURE
PAY IT FORWARD

STORM PREP

“Before a big storm, fill your gas tank and do your grocery shopping. If I-80 closes, the area will run out of both. Make sure your cell phone is charged, your camp stove and lantern are easily accessible, and you have plenty of batteries and propane.”

POWER OUTAGE TRICKS

“If the power goes out for an extended period and you find yourself without a generator, grab a cooler and throw some ice and snow in for a makeshift refrigerator for your perishables. You can also leave it outside or in the garage to keep it extra cool, but make sure it’s secured from bears and other hungry critters!”

CAR TIPS

“Carry non-slip rubber padding — the type you lay under carpets — in your car. It helps you get traction when stuck in the snow. Also make sure to carry a shovel, brush and scraper for when you really have to dig out!”

“Before it snows, put your windshield wipers up (back window too). It will make scraping your windshield in the morning easier and you won’t accidentally burn out your wiper motor when they try to lift out from heavy snow. Also, remember to turn your wipers off when you shut off the ignition. After it snows, brush off the driver’s side of the car first so you can get the defrost going. Then proceed to clean off the rest of the car.”

“Carry sandbags in the back of your car or truck. It helps weigh down a ‘light rear end,’ and you have sand if you need traction in a slippery situation. Also keep an overnight bag in the car in case you get stuck away from home. And when you leave your house, put extra food and water out for furry family members in case you’re delayed.”

“Pack a reflective vest with the rest of your emergency items in the car. Winter is dark, and you want to be visible day and night when on the side of the road.”

“In a pinch, you can use a credit card to scrape the ice off your windshield or side windows.”

KIDS STUFF

“Never leave the house without snacks, water and a book or two! Mad Libs are a great kids and adult activity if you ever find yourselves stuck in traffic or waiting for a tow truck.”

“Teach your kids how to carry their own skis early on…or you’ll be carrying their gear for a lifetime.”

“Always pack an extra pair of gloves for your kids. Without fail, they will lose at least one glove whenever you leave the house.”

“I feel like this one bears repeating every winter; do NOT eat yellow snow.”

TIME CHANGES ON TRASH DAY IN TAHOE DONNER

In an effort to improve trash services, Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal (TTSD) will be performing a re-route of the Tahoe Donner community. Your trash collection day will remain the same, but you may notice changes to the collection time, driver and truck type servicing your stop. Please put all trash out by 6:30AM to avoid any service interruption while the new schedule is implemented. For more information, call (530) 583-7800.

FLUSHABLE WIPES CLOG PIPES

The Truckee Sanitary District (TSD) is Truckee’s public agency responsible for the collection and conveyance of wastewater. Its mission is to protect public health and the

environment while providing its customers the highest level of service. One of the best ways to care for your family, your neighbors and our shared mountain community is to exercise safe waste practices.

In particular, “flushable” wipes do not disintegrate like regular toilet paper. They create harmful solid blockages in sewage pipes; these blockages have occurred in Tahoe Donner in recent months. Please place any “flushable wipes” you use in the garbage.

To learn more about safe waste practices, visit truckeesan.org
