MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

Dear Neighbors, Phenomenal! What else is there to say about our experiences this season of extraordinary snowfall?

While the snowfall was extraordinary, what is phenomenal is how we came together as a community, neighbors helping neighbors.

Like many, Tahoe Donner is my family’s beloved second home. As snow conditions changed from extraordinary to foreboding, we made the same wise decision as many other second homeowners. For the mutual safety of our families and our full-time Tahoe Donner neighbors, we stayed away, not inserting ourselves into the harrowing conditions.

Still, as president, I was in constant contact with the general manager to ensure that the board was ready to stand behind whatever was needed for the safety of our community and protection of our assets.

Tahoe Donner staff’s response was impressive. They coordinated closely with the Town of Truckee and service providers, tracking what was going on and offering assistance to ensure a coordinated effort for the welfare and safety of all. Staff adjusted amenity operations, adapting to the consequences of weather with a focus on safety, protection and recovery.

Once the onslaught subsided, I reached out to neighbors. Expecting to hear tales of woe, I was instead greeted with expressions of joy at seeing the sun after weeks of sequential storms and regaled with tales of neighbors helping neighbors.

Able neighbors helped not-so-able neighbors with shoveling berms and roofs, digging out trash enclosures and running

errands. Neighborhood fire hydrants were excavated. Snowblowers were shared. Those headed out for supplies reached out to neighbors, offering rides or shopping for the group. For those of us away, resident neighbors checked out our homes. Some even cleared berms for a welcome arrival back. Neighbors hosted dinner parties for anyone willing to post-hole across unplowed driveways and streets to break the captive isolation of homes with windows snowed over. One of the more unusual stories I heard, taking dinner parties to the next level, was of a mama bear with two cubs visiting neighbors’ homes, entering through the normally secure second story as deep snow made for easy access.

As an association, we are collectively obligated to come together to fund our common interest in amenities and operations and share in keeping our community safe. As neighbors, we collectively transform our common interest into shared enjoyment of all that is Tahoe Donner.

As one of my neighbors said, this winter’s experience provides the opportunity to get to know more of your neighbors. This neighborly spirit will serve us well in extreme conditions, as we just encountered. For the abundant good times, it will make our Tahoe Donner experience all the richer and our community all the stronger.

Your Neighbor,

Tahoe Donner Begins at home Fire Safety

U.S. Forest Service records show that, over the last 35 years, over 150 fires burned in or within a two-mile radius of Tahoe Donner. Defensible space is your property’s frontline defense against wildfire. Creating and maintaining defensible space around your home can dramatically increase your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire and improve the safety of firefighters defending your property. CAL FIRE statistics show that properties in compliance with defensible space requirements are five times more likely to survive a wildfire.

DEFENSIBLE SPACE IS CRITICAL TO YOUR HOME PROTECTION AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Tahoe Donner is proud to be a certified Firewise Community, recognized by the National Fire Protection Association for its commitment to fire safety. The Tahoe Donner Forestry Department is intent on helping homeowners bring their properties into compliance with state, local and association fire safety standards as well as in accordance with Tahoe Donner’s land management objectives. Clearing excess forest and household debris from properties can mimic fuel reduction zones – areas of strategic thinning of vegetation that help prevent the spread of wildfires – and contribute to ongoing forest restoration efforts that preserve important natural resources and biodiversity in the landscape. More information on defensible space practices can be found at readyforwildfire.org

NEW FIREASIDE SOFTWARE HELPS THE FORESTRY DEPARTMENT AND MEMBERS STAY IN COMMUNICATION ABOUT DEFENSIBLE SPACE

The Forestry Department is excited to announce its adoption of new inspection software from FireAside to aid in home evaluations and help property owners remain compliant. The department would like to thank the Truckee Fire Protection District for supporting the integration through Measure T funds. This cutting-edge software allows inspectors to file comprehensive assessments and provide homeowners a detailed report of their findings, including a parcel-specific list of requirements, location and photos of each issue and recommendations for individuals wanting to take additional steps.

Tahoe Donner uses a six-year defensible space inspection cycle for all properties within the association, with each lot being inspected once during that time. The roughly 1,100 properties up for inspection in 2023 will receive FireAside reports. The remainder of property owners will receive reports in the coming years as their properties are up for re-inspection. Details on the inspection cycle can be found at tahoedonner.com/defensible-space

FireAside’s resident report makes it easy and convenient for property owners to understand their defensible space status and provides a checklist of compliance to-dos and reminders so they can prioritize and resolve each issue. The report also provides details on the chipping program beginning June 1 and a convenient button to request curbside service. All chipping requests must be made via a FireAside resident report or the website.

The incorporation of this new software helps both the Forestry Department and Tahoe Donner property owners stay in communication about defensible space and inspection notices. It provides an easy-to-understand report that allows issues to be addressed in a timely and efficient manner. To learn more about FireAside software and applications, visit fireaside.co

FEATURE

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH INSPECTION NOTICES

Throughout the year, property owners receive inspection notices from the Tahoe Donner Forestry Department notifying them of home maintenance requirements, important deadlines and resources to ensure that proper and effective defensible space can be achieved. Creating defensible space typically entails the regular removal of dead, decaying and flammable vegetation such as pine needles, excess brush and tree limbs from within 10 feet of structures and propane tanks.

Homeowners can expect the following 2022/23 timeline to address defensible space around their homes:

• September – Tahoe Donner News inspection notice

• September – E-notice of inspections and 2023 defensible space program

• March – Reminder of 2023 defensible space program with inspection results

Timeline for Defensible Space Maintenance Fall Spring Summer

• May/June – Forestry staff will visit to mark trees that must be removed

• May/June – Official notice of non-compliance letter with due date and FireAside inspection report

• July/August – Due dates fall within the months of July-early August

In addition to notifying members of specific defensible space maintenance requirements, the Forestry Department provides helpful resources for the proper disposal of green waste, including options provided by Keep Truckee Green (keeptruckeegreen.org), a directory of local businesses that offer defensible space services to the Tahoe Donner area and a free curbside chipping program. Homeowners must request chipping service via the FireAside report or the website at tahoedonner.com/chipping-program

a partnership of stewardship and restoration

The Truckee River Watershed Council (TRWC) brings the community together for the Truckee River to protect, enhance and restore its watershed. Working with multiple public agencies and private organizations, Tahoe Donner remains an integral partner in this process, providing valuable insight and field support to the surrounding lands under their jurisdiction.

For many years, Tahoe Donner and TRWC have worked jointly on small projects for the ecological enhancement of Tahoe Donner’s open space. More recently, we have collaborated on larger projects to protect and restore Euer Valley streams and meadows. Together, we work to preserve Truckee’s natural resources, watersheds and wildlife habitats and maintain a thriving ecosystem amid everevolving residential and urban landscapes. Below are examples of Tahoe Donner and TRWC’s shared initiatives that demonstrate our mutual commitment to environmental stewardship.

BRANDON HUTTENLOCHER DESIGN WORKSHOP FEATURE

prosser basin watershed assessment

In a multi-agency collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, The Nature Conservancy and the Truckee Donner Land Trust, TRWC and Tahoe Donner worked to assess all public land and open space in the Prosser Basin from the headwaters to the reservoir. Completed in 2021, the report identified flourishing parts of the Prosser Basin and areas needing forest, stream or meadow restoration or additional management. From this assessment, TRWC and Tahoe Donner will work together to restore several reaches of Prosser Creek over the next few years.

DON’T LET ICE DAMS WRECK YOUR WINTER

Protecting mountain homes from extreme weather can be very challenging, and ice dams have been an especially hot topic this winter. Frequent snowy conditions increase the build-up of ice dams on rooftops, which can lead to leaks, mold and extensive structural damage.

Many people install heat cables (or heat tape) on their roofs to protect their homes. Heat cables prevent ice dams from forming by creating drainage channels. However, they draw a significant amount of energy, increasing carbon emissions and making them very expensive to operate.

Experts estimate that an average-sized home’s heat cable setup consumes enough electricity to drive a Tesla Model 3 around the Earth 2.5 times each winter! While heat tape can melt away snow and ice, the power it requires is burning up your wallet.

POWDER WATTS SMART TECHNOLOGY

Powder Watts is state-of-the-art technology that combines an AI cloud platform with intelligent sensors and smart switches to optimize heat cable for peak efficiency. Powder Watts converts energy-hungry heat cable into an automated system that can control rooftop snow hazards, simplify cable maintenance and save money. Here’s how:

SMART SENSORS COMMUNICATE ROOF CONDITIONS TO THE CLOUD

Powder Watts has managed an average heat cable off-time of 92%. In other words, heat cables only need to run about 8% of the time to be 100% effective in protecting a property from potentially catastrophic ice dam damage.

OFFERS VISUAL CAPABILITIES

Powder Watts uses smart camera technology to monitor and control heat cable. Homeowners can see for themselves the state of their roofs from their smartphones. As the roof conditions change, AI-backed technology alerts homeowners of snow and ice build-up, circuit breaker trips and disabled or worn cables and stops ice damage before it happens. Now, that's smart!

REQUIRES PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION FOR PRODUCT GUARANTEE

Powder Watts’ patented hardware monitors rooftop conditions and lets the cloud platform know when creating or maintaining drainage channels is necessary and when it's not. Over the past four years,

Let the professionals install your cable to ensure correct installation, optimum efficiency and guaranteed service. Powder Watts guarantees its product for 10 years in extreme weather conditions.

WIRELESS SYSTEM

Best of all, the system does not need an external power source to monitor snow conditions. The wireless camera can store enough solar power to last the entire winter under the snow and can withstand temperatures up to 140 degrees and down to negative 40 degrees.

For home protection and service you can trust, Powder Watts offers expertise and innovation that is transforming the industry. The National Science Foundation has recognized Powder Watts for their excellence in contributions in the areas of heat cable management, AI, machine/ computer vision, energy saving, structure protection and grid protection.

Protecting your home from weather hazards has never been easier or more affordable than with Powder Watts’ energy-efficient, patented AI-based sensor technology. Rebates from local power companies are possible. For more information on features, offers and heat cable technology, visit powderwatts.com or call (530) 331-4700.

A Holistic Approach to

FORESTRY AND LAND MANAGEMENT

For over five decades, Tahoe Donner has committed to protecting, conserving and beautifying its surrounding environment, taking a holistic approach to land management that ensures the maintenance of clean and safe neighborhoods while preserving natural spaces and habitats in and around the community. As the owner and steward of 5,048 acres of natural and open space and an additional 2,622 acres of private properties, utilities and public roads, Tahoe Donner is proud to have a forestry team that is nationally regarded as a leader in their field when it comes to defensible space, wildfire reduction and overall forest health.

In addition to its robust forestry team and trail crew, Tahoe Donner works in accordance with agencies and organizations like the Town of Truckee, Truckee Donner Land Trust, Truckee River Watershed Council, Sierra Nevada Conservancy, U.S. Forest Service, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Parks, CAL FIRE and Truckee Fire Protection District. Together, objectives are met in the areas of fire protection, forest care, wildlife habitat and watershed restoration, invasive species concerns, recreation and more.

FEATURE
BRANDON HUTTENLOCHER | DESIGN WORKSHOP

Sustained LAND MANAGEMENT EFFORTS

More than just a forestry crew dedicated to defensible space efforts, the Forestry and Land Management Department is a multifaceted department that works diligently with a wide variety of land management resources to continually address wildfire concerns, residential safety and recreational enjoyment while maintaining a balanced and healthy forest ecosystem. These efforts are guided by the Forestry Management Plan, an initiative first established by retired Tahoe Donner Registered Professional Forester Bill Houdyschell. This plan is updated every five years to stay relevant and safe.

FUEL BREAKS

A fuel break is a strategically placed zone between the natural forest and residential areas, also referred to as the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Fuel breaks are not created to stop a fire but to help slow its spread by reducing the amount of flammable vegetation in a given zone and allowing for more efficient firefighter intervention.

COMMON AREAS

These areas are owned by Tahoe Donner and maintained by the Forestry and Land Management Department for recreational enjoyment and to preserve essential natural spaces for native flora and fauna to thrive. Tahoe Donner is home to a complex and flourishing ecosystem that includes majestic trees like:

• Sugar Pine

• Lodgepole Pine

• Western White Pine

• Jeffrey Pine

• Red Fir

• White Fir

• Mountain Hemlock

Common areas also provide diverse habitat for a broad range of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, bears, bobcats, mountain lions, beavers, hawks, osprey, eagles, and threatened or endangered species like the wolverine, Sierra marten, great gray owl and Sierra Nevada red fox.

FUEL REDUCTION ZONES

Within a forest, different zones require specific treatment and maintenance plans. Strategic vegetation thinning in certain zones mimics the effects that would occur from natural wildfires. While fuel reduction zones are critical in helping prevent the rapid spread of wildfire, they also contribute to the ongoing forest restoration efforts that preserve important natural resources and biodiversity in the landscape and create healthier and stronger forests overall.

Recreation and THE TRAILS AND OPEN SPACE MASTER PLAN

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TRAIL USE

Tahoe Donner’s natural spaces have a rich history dating back to the Washoe people who, for generations, sustained a harmonious co-existence with the land. Hunting, fishing and gathering in the warmer months, migrating to lower elevations in colder months and practicing systematic wildfire management, the Washoe preserved this cyclical way of life for centuries until the encroachment of European settlers following the gold and silver rush in the 1850s. The gold and silver rush eventually gave way to intensive logging and ranching operations that helped establish an early network of new trails and access roads, many of which are now incorporated into Tahoe Donner’s unique and extensive trail system.

From the first acquisition of land in the area in the late sixties, when NFL football player Jack Kirby purchased 4,020 acres from a Christmas tree farmer, to the first home built in 1971 and the community’s ski resort constructed in 1972, Tahoe Donner has

always carried a vision of a family-friendly mountain community with endless recreational opportunities.

Land acquisitions have been integral in sustaining this vision both for growing the community and protecting the natural resources that contribute to the community’s allure. Since 2002, Tahoe Donner has acquired an additional 1,142 acres, including two Euer Valley purchases, the Bucknam Tract, the McGlashan Springs parcel and an additional 20-acre property, all of which provide an abundance of trails and open space to be enjoyed, preserved and protected over generations.

OVER 60 MILES OF TRAILS TODAY

At present, Tahoe Donner comprises over 7,000 acres, with over 4,000 acres of recreation space and 1,300 acres of common area interspersed among the more than 6,000 homes. The trail system currently consists of over 60 miles of new and legacy multi-use trails. Legacy trails include historical logging and fire access roads, equestrian trails and user-created trails adopted into the system as a result of repeated use. The existing trail system includes:

• Major and minor trailheads

• Official and unofficial neighborhood access points

• Associated signage

• Kiosks

• Restroom facilities

• Dog waste stations

• Other ancillary infrastructure

TRAILS AND OPEN SPACE MASTER PLAN UPDATED IN 2022

With valuable community and stakeholder input, Tahoe Donner revised its existing Trails and Open Space (TOS) Master Plan in 2022, strengthening its efforts toward a more vibrant and sustainable mountain community for hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers. The plan's purpose affirms Tahoe Donner’s commitment to responsible management of trail systems and open spaces while acknowledging evolving use patterns and Tahoe Donner’s desire to offer a spectrum of family-friendly and year-round outdoor recreational opportunities for its members. This comprehensive and updated plan guides the latest efforts and initiatives of the Forestry and Land Management Department, highlighting areas where they can increase the value and quality of the user experience.

TRAILS AND OPEN SPACE PROGRESS

In September 2022, the Forestry and Land Management Department welcomed a new trail manager, Leslie Loveland, who has hit the ground running in continuing the department's current efforts for facilitating new projects according to the TOS plan.

ALDER CREEK ADVENTURE CENTER WETLAND RESTORATION

Prior to the winter months, members may have seen trail crews around the Alder Creek Adventure Center working to divert the original trail that crosses designated wetlands onto a boardwalk and away from the protected areas. Moving forward, all hikers and

TRAIL SIGNAGE

A primary initiative of the TOS plan is to improve signage throughout the trail system to mitigate impacts from recreational use. The trail manager is hard at work creating a cohesive design for the signs, which will be installed seasonally starting this summer.

FUEL REDUCTION, MASTICATION AND TREE REMOVAL

Fuel reduction and mastication were completed this past summer around the Alder Creek Adventure Center and Sunrise Bowl. Work will continue once conditions permit, and a primary goal for 2023 is to clear approximately 300 dead trees below the driving range and along the Nature Loop Trail. Heavy maintenance and dead tree removal will also begin on singletrack trails once they are dry enough to access safely.

bikers will need to access the trail system from the new boardwalk and trailhead. A new boardwalk just off the Alder Creek Adventure Center trailhead. It replaces the original Alder Creek Trail that had crossed a designated wetland. A primary initiative for the 2023 trail program is to improve signage that will help mitigate impacts from recreational use. A primary goal for 2023 will be to clear approximately 300 dead trees below the driving range along the Nature Loop Trail.

COYOTE CROSSING

Coyote Crossing will be closed to all users until the portion of the trail through the meadow is dry. The construction of a bridge and boardwalk is slated to begin in late summer to mitigate the impacts of recreational use on the meadow and erosion from ranching prior to Tahoe Donner owning the property. Additionally, in partnership with the Truckee River Watershed Council, the department will work to restore a reach of Prosser Creek to improve wildlife habitat, protect the stream banks and improve water quality. To learn more about this project, flip to page 8.

Opportunities to WORK WITH THE TRAIL CREW

The Forestry and Land Management Department has begun the hiring process for summer employment. Interested applicants can find part-time and seasonal positions at tahoedonner.com/jobs Additionally, the department offers various volunteer opportunities for trail maintenance. Multiple trail days are held throughout the year, organized by the department or coordinated through various association clubs.

GLACIER WAY TRAILHEAD PROJECT AND NEW WALKING PATH

The department is currently in the planning and permitting process for this project. Pending all necessary approvals, trailhead improvements and the addition of a new walking path at Glacier Way can begin in 2024.

Every October on Truckee River Day, in conjunction with the Truckee River Watershed Council, volunteers are called upon to plant trees in designated areas throughout Tahoe Donner. And once the Coyote Crossing bridge and boardwalk are complete, the trail crew will be seeking volunteers to help construct a new quarter-mile trail from South Euer Valley Road to the creek. To get involved as a volunteer and take advantage of fun opportunities to work alongside the Forestry and Land Management Department, visit tahoedonner.com/trails

ADDITIONAL RESTORATION AND TRAIL MAINTENANCE

Come summer, drastic improvements are planned for the trailhead and parking area at the north end of the Nature Loop Trail. Additional improvements are scheduled for the equestrian zone, creating a safer site for horses. Restoration work will begin on South Euer Valley Road. Field reconnaissance and ground truthing will also commence for proposed trails from the TOS plan.

Tahoe Donner encourages members to stay updated on the progress of the Trails and Open Space Master Plan and the status of trails where maintenance work is scheduled. For more information, visit tahoedonner.com/land-management

While the Forestry and Land Management Department works diligently to maintain and protect Tahoe Donner’s natural resources, members are encouraged to stay informed on issues and become active stewards in the preservation and responsible enjoyment of trails and open spaces. This includes avoiding wet and muddy trail areas, politely yielding to other users per trail policies, maintaining safe speeds, staying out of wetlands and other protected areas, obeying all trail closure and designated parking signs, keeping dogs leashed in public areas and properly disposing or packing out pet waste and litter.

The department provides additional resources on the website that further elaborate on and encourage positive trail culture and etiquette. To learn more, visit tahoedonner.com/trails

While hunkered down during a blizzard, I found it an ideal time to practice using my amateur radio. Cell phones aren’t always reliable when off-roading, so I got an FCC amateur radio license for emergency use. After charging up my handheld Yeasu radio, I went searching for repeaters. Repeaters rebroadcast local signals across longer distances. Repeaters are located on mountain tops and are sometimes linked to other repeaters for an even wider range. I was able to reach the SNARS standalone repeater on Mount Rose and the linked W6YOP repeater on Alder Peak from Tahoe Donner. Pretty cool! Experimenting with this technology was a blast. Amateur radio enthusiasts monitor these signals almost continuously. As a “newbie,” I was hesitant to ask for more than a radio check but learned that part of the fun of amateur radioing is conversing with

QUILT CLUB

My mother in Quebec recently shared with me that on Groundhog Day, they discovered that Canada’s most beloved marmot had passed during the winter. While Canadians mourn the loss of our national weather-predicting woodchuck, we’ve been left to wonder if we’re now stuck in an endless frost until a new groundhog emerges. With all this snow, it almost feels that way! At the very least, all these storms make for wonderful sewing time. Several of us have been taking advantage of the weather to be creative and productive. I can hardly wait to see what the ladies will bring to share at our next meeting. Curious about what we do? Come on by! For more information about the Tahoe Donner Quilt Club, contact Odette at odette.turmel@gmail.com. The club meets downstairs in the Alder Room at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub on the first and third Wednesday of the month (weather permitting) from 1-3PM.

others. Over the radio, I met a handful of very helpful longtime enthusiasts who were generous with their time and knowledge. I’ll be checking in regularly! As mentioned above, in the event of an emergency while off-roading, radios can come in handy when cell service is unreliable. If you’d like to join me in learning more about this fun and practical communication device, email us at td4wheelers@gmail.com

Spring is here, and summer golf is just around the corner!

TDMGC is pleased to provide a variety of events this season. There is something for everyone, from socials and mixers, weekly Wednesday games, events for family and friends, team events, opportunities to prove your individual skills, the chance to represent your club at the NCGA level and the opportunity to be the MatchPlay, Invitational and Club Champion. While most events are exclusive to club members, we also engage broader community participation by hosting events open to all TD homeowners. The Senior/Junior and Memorial tournaments are open to all property owners and offer competitive 18-hole play and non-competitive 9-hole options to encourage players of all levels and interests. We alternate hosting the TD Ryder Cup with the Women’s Golf Club (open to members of each club) and support participation in the Summer Partners Tournament. Our season-ending Chapman Tournament is also open to all TD property owners.

View our full schedule of over 30 events on our website at tdgolfclub.com and contact Membership Chair Michael O’Connell at oconnell.tdgolf@gmail.com to join the TDMGC.

MEN’S GOLF CLUB

TD 9-HOLERS CLUB

We’re kicking off our preseason activities as we welcome new and returning members. Our prep for the season includes spring clinics on topics such as Golf Fitness and the Mental Game, led by Head Pro Jeff Hwang. Our spring breakfast and new member orientation will be in May, and as soon as our course is open, we’ll begin regular Thursday morning play days.

League play days will be in a shotgunstart format, with both standard play and occasional side competitions to shake it up. Another summer highlight will be twilight play evenings, which include casual tournaments and social time for members and their guests. We also look forward to our summer tournament and luncheon in July and our summer fun tournament and banquet in August. We’ve got game!

Our friendly, supportive club is a great way to meet super gals and improve your game through easy-tofit-in, inclusive 9-hole play. For club information, email td9hole@gmail.com

JUNIOR GOLF CLUB

It’s hard to think about golf with all the snow still on the ground, but spring is here, and it’s time to look forward to an upcoming season of play. We will meet every Thursday at 2PM on the practice green for games and drills and then head onto the course starting at 3PM. All participants are welcome regardless of skill level; however, some course experience is preferred. Mark your calendars for the following fun TDJGC-hosted events:

• Free ice cream social for club members on July 13

• Annual championship tournament on Aug. 3

To join the Tahoe Donner Junior Golf Club, please complete the membership information sheet available at the Pro Shop. An annual membership fee of $10 will also be collected for snacks, drinks and the tournament costs. Contact parent coordinators Russ and Jean Lai at rslai@comcast.net or by phone after June 1 at (530) 582-0673.

WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB

Plans for our 2023 golf season are coming together! In addition to clubonly events, several “team-format” tournaments are open to all TD golf club members and property owners. These events are on Sunday afternoons, typically followed by food, drinks and awards. Tournament dates and descriptions are as follows:

• The Men’s Golf Club will host the Junior/Senior Tournament on July 30. This traditionally parent/child event only requires each team to have one golfer under the age of 50 and one over.

• The Women’s Golf Club sponsors the Summer Partners Tournament on Aug. 6. While not required, teams are often comprised of significant others.

• This year’s Ryder Cup is scheduled for Aug 27. This is a team match-play event, with each team captained by one of our pros. (Due to popularity, this event is limited to men and women’s club members.)

• The Men’s Club sponsors the Memorial Tournament on Sept. 17 to memorialize a recently passed community member. A portion of the entry fee is donated to charity.

• The season wraps up on Oct. 1 with the Chapman, a modified scotch tournament sponsored by the Men’s Club.

We have a fun season ahead, and we hope you’ll join us! For more information, contact TDWGClub@gmail.com

MAKE EVERY DAY EARTH DAY IN TAHOE DONNER

Earth Day is an annual event to demonstrate commitment to environmental protection and stewardship. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, with a nationwide rally organized by former Wisconsin State Senator Gaylord Anton Nelson. Within the year, the U.S. government established the Environmental Protection Agency, and by 1990, Earth Day became an international event recognized by more than 140 countries around the world.

This year, Earth Day falls on Saturday, April 22. While Earth Day is a once-a-year global celebration, there are many ways to honor it locally and make an impact daily. Consider practicing sustainability right here in Tahoe Donner.

FEATURE

REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCE WASTE + MAINTAIN DEFENSIBLE SPACE

Bike or Walk Along Truckee’s Paved Path System. The Trout Creek Trail is a paved path that connects Tahoe Donner to downtown Truckee. This 1.5-mile one-way trail (three miles out and back) with a moderate slope provides both a scenic and convenient pathway to the historic downtown area. It is ideal for families on foot, with strollers or on bikes. From downtown Truckee, access over 26 miles of additional paved paths throughout the area!

For more information on the Town of Truckee’s incredible trails, visit townoftruckee.com/government/ truckee-trails-and-bikeways

Properly Dispose of Trash, Recycling and Yard/Green Waste. Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal provides weekly curbside pickup of trash and blue-bag recycling. Additionally, in partnership with Keep Truckee Green (keeptruckeegreen.com), various opt-in services are made available for residents to conveniently and properly dispose of waste, including recycling and green waste rolling carts, green waste dumpsters and large item scheduled curbside pickup.

Familiarize yourself with the trash schedule and waste and recycling services by visiting tahoedonner.com/waste-changes

ENJOY TAHOE DONNER TRAILS AND OPEN SPACES

Volunteer with Tahoe Donner’s Trail Crew and Other Groups. Tahoe Donner is home to some of the most stunning trails in the Truckee area. Work alongside the trail crew to improve and maintain the trail network, including building new singletrack, clearing downed trees, putting up signs and more. Additionally, groups like the TD Hiking Club and Friends of TD Trails coordinate volunteer events.

Visit tahoedonner.com/volunteer to learn more about upcoming opportunities and sign up to volunteer today!

Utilize Public Transportation in the Truckee Area. While the TART bus route does not include Tahoe Donner, several bus stops are located at the bottom of Northwoods Boulevard within walking and biking distance of the neighborhood. Busses are also equipped with racks that can fit up to three bikes per bus on a firstcome, first-served basis.

To learn more about the TART regional transit program, visit tahoetruckeetransit.com.

Eat Locally-Grown Produce and Meats

in Tahoe Donner. Truckee has two terrific farmers markets in the summer – one on Saturday mornings in Downtown Truckee and the other in Regional Park on Tuesday morning – as well as several shops that specialize in organic and locally-grown foods.

Tahoe Donner’s restaurants – The Lodge Restaurant & Pub, Alder Creek Cafe and Pizza on the Hill – also all incorporate fresh and locally-sourced meats and produce into their dishes whenever they can. Next time you stop in for a bite, make it a point to ask for local menu options.

Maintain Defensible Space Around Your Property. Compliance with Tahoe Donner’s defensible space and land management guidelines helps protect against the threat of wildfire and keeps forests healthy. In cleaning and maintaining a perimeter around your property free of excess forest and household debris, you can contribute to ongoing forest restoration efforts that preserve important natural resources and biodiversity in the landscape. To learn more about defensible space practices and Tahoe Donner’s land management practices, visit tahoedonner.com/defensible-space or turn to page 12.

Ditch Single-Use Plastic Water Bottles and Snack Packaging. While water and snacks are essential for a day on the trails, singleuse plastic water bottles and packaging for energy bars and chips are often among the litter found on trails and in creeks and streams. To reduce the amount of trash ending up in natural spaces, opt for reusable water bottles and snack containers and securely pack out any wrappers you do have.

Pick up After Your Pets! Furry family members shouldn’t miss out on the fun on trails, but if they do need to relieve themselves, make sure to pick up after your pets and pack it out or dispose of in designated waste bins. Dog waste bags do not decompose, and research suggests that even biodegradable ones do not break down fast enough to leave on the trails. Please carry out your dog’s waste to keep the trails clean and healthy.

SHOPTD SUMMER CAMP TIPS

Tahoe Donner’s popular summer camps and programs, which have started their staggered on-sale dates, are likely to sell out. To ensure quick and easy enrollment, make sure all child members, including those 6 and under, are set up in your ShopTD online profile as members before all camps and programs go on sale.

You can view all individuals on your account by logging in to shop.tahoedonner.com and clicking “My Account.” If you need to add additional members to your account, please get in touch with Member Services before registration day. Adding a member to your profile on registration day may result in not being able to purchase the program you desire.

When signing up for a camp, anticipate longer-than-normal online wait times. You may be placed in our ShopTD virtual waiting room during high-traffic periods. All members who enter the waiting room before the on-sale time, whether it is five minutes beforehand or two hours beforehand, will be equally randomized to enter the store once the products go live. Joining the waitlist early does not increase your odds of entering the site first. And once in the store, be sure to check out within 15 minutes of adding items to your cart.

Learn more at tahoedonner.com/summercamps.

DOWNHILL SKI LODGE WEB HUB REVAMP

Staff and the board are excited to continue making progress on the Downhill Ski Lodge Replacement Project. Staff have submitted applications and reviews to the Town of Truckee and provided the environmental studies requested by the Town of Truckee to date; they are currently waiting on an environmental review from the Town’s consultant. Once the environmental

determination by the Town is complete, a project timeline should become clearer.

In the meantime, Tahoe Donner staff continue working with project consultants to focus on value engineering – looking at ways to reduce costs that don’t impact the member experience or operations – while the project is currently out to bid.

To find historical information, recent status updates, frequently asked questions, design plans and more in a fresh new layout, check out the recently renovated web hub at tahoedonner.com/ski-lodge-replacement
