ESKAY CREEK REVITALIZATION PROJECT IBA Questions & Answers #1 Tahltan Leadership Virtual Engagement Session | June 10, 2021
How many jobs will the Eskay Creek Revitalization Project create? We expect to create approximately 450-500 jobs during construction and 250-300 jobs during operations.
What will be Skeena’s biggest challenge with the Environmental Assessment? Water management will be Skeena’s priority for the Environmental Assessment process. In this regard, the fact that the Eskay Creek site is a historical ‘brownfield’ mine means that a much greater amount of data is available to us in formulating mitigation plans.
What has been Skeena’s community involvement to date? What are your Tahltan metrics? Skeena does track Tahltan metrics for the project. In 2020, approximately $25m of Skeena’s expenditures went to Tahltan owned businesses and Joint-Ventures. Currently, 69 Tahltans are employed which accounts for 3,027 person days worked, 18 of whom are direct hires. We will have updated data for 2021 year very soon.
Will contracts go through the Tahltan Central Government (TCG)? Skeena is currently in on-going discussions with Ann Ball, the TCG’s Director of Employment and Contracting, to reach this objective. Our goal is to improve Tahltan representation onsite and build on the historical partnership that was in place when Eskay Creek was previously in operation. Current initiatives include an Entrepreneur Program, a Mentorship Program, and a Business Registry. The IBA will include provisions for using Tahltan contractors and businesses at the Eskay site where we can. The idea behind the entrepreneurship program is to support Tahltans build to their businesses through getting contracts at Eskay.
