WELCOME TO FAIRBRIDGE FESTIVAL There is just an amazing diversity of music for you to enjoy this year and I urge you to take the time to do a bit of research on our artists. I have personally selected many of these artists from overseas festivals and have seen them firsthand! You can’t afford to miss out on the incredible Sheelanagig, the liquid honey harmonies of the Lost Brothers, Cara exploring new dimensions in Celtic music and the astonishing virtuosity of Will Pound and Eddy Jay. From Canada, the fabulous young musicians in Ten Strings and a Goat Skin, the kooky vibe of Perch Creek and from Sheffield in the UK we’ve got the Ganglions, a trio of punk-pop super musicians who are set to take Fairbridge Festival to an entirely new musical space! How quickly a year comes around! Hot on the heels of our huge 25th year celebrations comes another jam-packed program of music, dance, and children’s events. Alongside our markets, art stalls, workshop programs and street performances, Fairbridge Festival 2018 is again set to burst into the holiday season with all the colour and good vibes it is famous for.

From around Australia and the world, from around our WA local community and quite possibly from around your own neighbourhood, we bring you a festival experience that is quite simply unsurpassed. If this isn’t your first year, it’s time you finally took the step into this magical weekend that everyone is talking about. Rod Vervest Artistic Director

VENUES

All venues are subject to capacity restrictions. BACKLOT A festival within a festival! Off the main drag and in the woods behind Nightingale Cottage, BACKLOT is a cool mix of inspired music, crafty crafts, hands-on workshops and Seedbox, a teen chill-out space.

CHAPEL Located at the top of Market Street and adjacent to the catering area, this beautiful acoustic venue is ideal for vocal and intimate music concerts. The adjoining lawns are set up for fun activities and provide a great place to relax.

CLUB WEST

DJINDALUX Our star attraction! The name is a fusion of two ancient languages, Noongar and Latin and translates as starlight. This venue is situated behind the Chapel. You won’t miss it!

HOOPLA Put your dancing shoes on! Located on the basketball court, Hoopla hosts dance displays and workshops during the day and some serious grrooooving at night!

GUS’S BAR Meet up with friends old and new! Centrally located opposite Mandja and the catering area, Gus’s Bar sells Guinness… what more do you need to know? It’s the place to be for the after party on Sunday night!

KALEIDOSCOPE Provides all day entertainment for the younger ones (Mums and Dads too!). Find us east of Clubhouse (museum end) and behind the swimming pool.

LOFT Upstairs in the Clubhouse, this small and intimate venue is home to Playback Theatre during the day (the most interactive fun you’ll have!). The entrance is located across from Victor’s Garden Bar. Strictly no food or drink is allowed and please leave your shoes at the door.

MANDJA Our main concert venue! Opposite Gus’s Bar and near the catering area, this venue is home to spectacular live music shows across the folk and world music genre. Mandja means meeting place in the local Noongar language.

Located in the west wing of the Clubhouse, this space holds workshops for kids. On Saturday it hosts Stretch to Fairbridge Festival, a taster of the Peel Region’s harvest of cultural achievements, which is celebrated at Mandurah’s annual Stretch Arts Festival on the first weekend in May. Club West is where you can enjoy local Noongar visual arts, take part in traditional dance workshops and immerse yourself in acoustic sets from local emerging artists. There is an array of unique artworks exhibited and a chance to buy locally handmade wares from Tiny Shops on Wheels, a collective of Peel Region based artists, makers and creators.

DINING HALL Located close to the village entrance, this venue holds Masterclasses and workshops in the main hall (formerly held in Retreat). Kids in the Kitchen cooking classes are held in the venue’s kitchen. Access to the kitchen is via the outdoor alfresco area.

CLUBHOUSE

A place of special memories for the Old Fairbridgians who grew up in the village. It’s the home of intimate concerts with an emphasis on traditional music and special musical presentations, including Old School Audio and In Conversations events. The Village Museum (open all day) can be found in the East Wing. The Clubhouse kitchen is the home of the Good Food for Cool Dudes cooking sessions.

HOOPLA BAR From the sidelines, you can check out all the moves

PAPER SCISSORS ROCK Located under the trees opposite Kaleidoscope, this space offers hands on art and creative workshops for children of all ages.

RUBY’S This is a licensed and seated venue tucked in behind Fairbridge House and adjacent to Victor’s Garden Bar. A popular venue to sit, relax, and enjoy a drink with the music. While it is informal, Ruby’s is still a concert space and we ask that audiences try to keep noise to a minimum during the performances. VICTOR’S GARDEN BAR - Nestled on the west side of Ruby’s, the Garden Bar has been a popular spot to enjoy a drink and bask in the sounds that flow from Ruby’s stage. Now renamed Victor’s Garden Bar, the area pays tribute to sound engineer Victor O’Connor. For over a decade, Victor worked the dials to expertly deliver the music of hundreds of artists to the ears of our festival audiences. Victor is sadly missed, but will always be remembered. Visit Victor’s Garden Bar for a relaxed drink and chat.

LICENSED VENUES: The festival will run three licensed venues: Gus’s Bar opposite Mandja, Victor’s Garden Bar (behind Heath Cottage and adjacent to Ruby’s) and Hoopla Bar on the sidelines of the Hoopla venue. No alcohol to be consumed outside these venues. Note: the festival has a zero-tolerance policy on under-age drinking.

CAMPING AND VEHICLE MOVEMENT: For the comfort of others, please do not drive around the campgrounds or festival precinct once you have set up your campsite. There are specific ‘no vehicle movement’ areas and these must be observed. Take care not to park your vehicle on access ways and do not block others.

LOST PROPERTY, CHILDREN (OR PARENTS!): To report lost persons or property or to see if what you’ve lost has been found, please go to Festival HQ in Belfast Cottage. All children must wear a wristband, with parent contact number, at all times.

CATERING: Food and drink stalls operate all weekend providing a variety of healthy food. You’ll find them south of the Chapel and next to Hoopla.

FESTIVAL HQ: Festival administration is at Belfast Cottage. Lost/found property; lost children/parents; incident reports; and festival compliments/complaints and feedback registers are here. On the left side of the road as you come into the site, next to the St John First Aid post.

RESPECT THE VILLAGE – LEAVE NO TRACE Help us to eradicate all rubbish left in the camping areas and festival precinct. Please put your rubbish in the appropriate bins – and never on the ground! SAFETY TIPS: This is a rural site with uneven ground – be aware of hazards such as concrete kerbs, ditches and gumnuts – and use a torch at night. Wear a hat, sunscreen, and drink plenty of water during the festival. Sorry – no campfires!

FESTIVAL SHOP (ARTISTS + FESTIVAL MERCHANDISE): At the top of Market Street, in front of the Chapel Lawn. FIRST AID: The St John Ambulance first aid van is located on the main street as you come into the festival site, next to HQ. Please ask a crew member for directions if required.

VOLUNTEER CHECK-IN AND VOLUNTEER CENTRAL Located next to the Festival Shop at the top of Market Street and co-located with Festival Info and raffle sales.

NOTE FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

For those with young children: The festival is family-friendly, but it can be distressing when young ones get parted from mum/dad/their carer. We do not provide child-care, so please be sure you always know where your little ‘uns are. Write your mobile number on children’s wristbands, and be sure they know where Festival HQ is should they get lost (in Belfast Cottage – the big green cottage towards the entrance, adjacent to the first aid post.)
