WELCOME TO FAIRBRIDGE FESTIVAL so many, Kristina Olsen, the Ten Cent Shooters, Bluegrass Parkway and The Chipolatas are just a few Fairbridge Festival favourites that feature in 2017. These venerable artists are still plying their trade, remaining true to their love of giving audiences an exhilarating and unforgettable live music experience. New to the 2017 program, you will find artists like Jarlath Henderson who incorporates electronica into traditional folk to find a deep groove not usually associated with this style. It’s an exciting, contemporary twist on ancient tunes that fuse traditional instrumentation with modern sounds. Harpeth Rising is a virtuosic trio of classical musicians who bring amazing instrument skills to a range of genres. Broadly termed chamber-folk, this is a burgeoning area of musical fusion that is so exciting to experience and one I’m keen to explore a lot more. Young English band, Flats and Sharps utilise bluegrass as a vehicle to express their own song-craft, contemporising the genre yet remaining true to a heritage of great music.

To arrive at a 25th year celebration as a growing, vibrant and progressive festival is a wonderful achievement! It tells us that, at our core, we are achieving something great; something we know has become integral to the lives of so many Western Australians. Twenty-five years constitutes a human generation. The youth of early Fairbridge Festivals are returning with their own young families and passing on the memories of cherished times, joy of shared experiences and connections to ongoing festival friendships. Like the core of a planet, Fairbridge Festival radiates a magnetism that is irresistible! Our 25th anniversary program presents both a reflection on some of the artists that have been integral to our growth, but also to what future programs will contain. Amongst

There is dance galore with loads of heavy brass driven bands that showcase ‘80s funk and manic gypsy swing. You’ll hear Cuban, Peruvian, Congolese music pumping from various venues, whilst in small wooden alcoves acousticians on hand-made instruments cuddle around beautiful microphones. Shantymen bellow the roofs of bars whilst up at the Backlot the younger crowd bounce and bump to hip hop, indie folk and pop. Danish folk, Appalachian harmony singing, Sicilian accordion tunes, Piedmont blues, Quebecois folk fusion, stride piano and Irish bouzouki all coexist together in a cultural milieu that has the Fairbridge Festival stamp of authenticity and integrity that has sustained us….for a generation! FESTIVALS, MOVIES AND MAGIC

Fairbridge Festival the inspiration for Three Summers Happy 25th birthday to Fairbridge Festival from Ben Elton and the Three Summers production team! Just last year we were here at the festival filming the live acts, food trucks, new age stalls – and generally capturing the unique atmosphere of this jewel of a festival, in the heart of the Peel Region. This footage will serve as the key backdrop and glue to the connecting stories of our – very fictitious – Westival where Westifolks come

together year after year and, ultimately, are the better for it. So you might see yourself or a friend hobnobbing with the stars – or just idly busking – if you catch the film in cinemas later this year. In addition to Fairbridge Festival, we had great support from Fairbridge Village, local business and facilities too numerous to mention here, and over 1,000 locals who trudged through all kinds of wind and rain to help us recreate the ambience you are

enjoying today – including holding down a big top in a gale! On behalf of all of us, including: Magda Szubanski, Michael Caton, Robert Sheehan, Rebecca Breeds, Deborah Mailman, John Waters, Kelton Pell and the rest of the cast and crew we look forward to sharing the film with you all later in the year! EMILY WURRAMARA CONTEMPORARY FOLK This country has a cultural heartbeat like few others. For millennia that pulse has been powered by music. It has always been song that has told this country’s stories – it’s why such an ancient culture remains so alive and powerful. But today we see a new tradition being born – young artists drawing from two very different worlds to make music and tell stories about contemporary life but with an ageless perspective. You can hear it through every beat and skip of Emily’s music and her deeply engaging and personal songs, which she sings in both English and Anindilyakwa, the traditional language of her home on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory. PUSH ME PULL YOU

The Perth Morris Men have the distinction of being the oldest side in Australia, having been founded in 1974. The dances performed are mainly from the Cotswold Hills but there is the odd dance from other areas as well. The dances are lively and spectacular and often a unique style has developed due to Perth’s remoteness. The dances vary from gentle handkerchief waving to vigorous mock battle dances with large sticks. (WA)

Learn universal lead and follow techniques so you can dance with anyone to any music! This class is appropriate whether you are a total beginner or an experienced partner dancer. We will explore where the lead comes from and how the follow can best react to the signals from the lead and move as one body instead of two separate ones. You do not need a partner to come to class!! You just need a flexible mind and a desire to dance! This class has been the surprise hit at swing camps in Canada and the States.

Perth’s Lost Quays and The Albany Shantymen lock cutlasses in a “shanty off” that many tales will no doubt flow from. Find your own rafter to swing from in a big, bold, beardy and beery tribute to the late Mike Horton, beloved Fairbridge Festival son, Spookyman of the spookiest kind and all round great bloke. The bar will be open! CLUBHOUSE 10:15 PM

MONDAY 24th FOLK FUTURES Three of the finest young groups at the festival grace the Djindalux stage for a morning of music that looks into the crystal ball of contemporary folk.
