WELCOME TO FAIRBRIDGE FESTIVAL

It’s been another fascinating year of building the festival program. Travel has taken me to international showcases that are providing wonderful contacts and opportunities. On the local front, it is always great to be hearing about new bands and experiencing the development of established acts. It is really pleasing that alongside the mainstream, there is a steady flow of folk-based acts, world music fusions and artists who dabble in traditional music forms and tune making. This is the lifeblood of the festival music program: the artists who explore deeper stories, deeper sensibilities and nuance that give us the diversity and appreciation that the world consists of huge musical variety. You will detect distinct Italian vibes in the program this year. Visiting international and Australian artists combine in a medley of Mediterranean sounds, a fusion of cultural expressions that define this country with skipping rhythms, catchy melodies and visceral stories. Look for the brilliant Riccardo Tesi & Banditaliana, Santa Taranta and our homegrown folk icon Kavisha Mazzella. We explore North American music from the earthy and raw sounds of old-timey Appalachian music and vintage swing, to bluegrass and what could virtually be described as ‘neo-classical acoustic’ played by the wonderful Kittel & Co. I’m immensely fond of this fusion of traditional forms with highly individualised arranging and playing that is truly artistic, cutting edge and new. Whatever your bent, Fairbridge Festival can guarantee that you will find something new, something inspiring and something to create lifelong memories. It may be in the kid’s program, at a dance workshop, a new-found friend, or a new band or two to follow. Study the program closely and milk it for all its richness and diversity. Rod Vervest, Fairbridge Festival Artistic Director

LOFT

Located at the top of Market Street and adjacent to the food stalls area, Chapel is a hallowed place of musical worship. This beautiful acoustic venue is ideal for vocal and intimate music concerts. The adjoining lawns are set up for fun activities for all ages and provide a great place to relax.

A beloved venue of history and memory, the Clubhouse is the home of intimate concerts with an emphasis on traditional music and special musical presentations, including festival Special Events. The Village Museum can be found in the East Wing. The Clubhouse Kitchen is the home of the Good Food for Cool Dudes cooking sessions.

Located in the west wing of the Clubhouse building, Club West houses our workshop program. From Friday afternoon, right throughout Saturday and Sunday, come along to enjoy festival artists revealing the tricks of their trade.

Situated behind the Chapel, Djindalux is our star attraction! A truly unique venue that imbues performances with an atmosphere of pure magic. You can’t miss out on the Djindalux experience! The name is a fusion of two ancient languages, Noongar (Djinda) and Latin (Lux) and translates as starlight.

Centrally located opposite Mandja and the food stalls area, Gus’s Bar is a Fairbridge Festival institution and absolute festival favourite. This is where you meet up with friends old and new and rub shoulders with artists! This year we feature a new selection of beers (including our favourite Guinness). Eftpos available.

Located on the basketball court near the west end of the festival precinct, Hoopla hosts dance displays and workshops during the day and some serious grooving at night! Put your dancing shoes on and head to Hoopla for an energetic and enlivening experience!

Upstairs at the Clubhouse, the Loft is home to Playback Theatre during the day. The entrance to this small and intimate venue is located across from Victor’s Garden Bar. There is strictly no food or drink allowed and please leave your shoes at the door.

All venues are subject to capacity restrictions.

MANJDA

YOUTH

RUBY’S

BACKLOT

The much-loved Ruby’s is a licensed and seated venue tucked in behind Fairbridge House and adjacent to Victor’s Garden Bar. A popular venue to sit, relax, and enjoy a drink with the music. While it is an informal venue, we ask that audiences keep noise to a minimum during the performances.

Off the main drag and in the woods behind Nightingale Cottage, Backlot is a festival within a festival. Here you’ll find our youth program for ages 13+, a delightful medley of inspired music, crafty crafts and hands-on workshops. Backlot is home to the Teen Art Space and Seedbox, a chill-out zone.

Kaleidoscope provides all day entertainment for the younger ones (Mums and Dads too!). Find us east of the Clubhouse (museum end) and behind the swimming pool.

KIDS

KALEIDOSCOPE

Opposite Gus’s Bar and near the Chapel food stalls, Mandja (Noongar for meeting place) is our main concert venue and home to spectacular live music shows. Head here for the large-scale festival moments, combined concerts and spectacular evening shows.

BARS

PAPER SCISSORS ROCK

Located under the trees opposite Kaleidoscope, Paper Scissors Rock offers hands on art and creative workshops for children of all ages. You will find Face Painting nearby too!

HOOPLA BAR

From the sidelines of the Hoopla Stage, you can check out all the moves while chilling out at Hoopla Bar. Regional WA performers will be playing here at intervals throughout Saturday and Sunday.

PEACOCK BAR

Our newest addition to the festival, located at Artist Central, the Peacock Bar is a late night session and impromptu jamming space. Like the peacocks that inhabit the vicinity, the raucous and the beautiful combine in a lively and colourful expression.

VICTOR’S GARDEN BAR

Nestled on the west side of Ruby’s, Victor’s Garden Bar is a popular spot to enjoy a drink and bask in the sounds of Fairbridge Festival. This bar is named for revered sound engineer Victor O’Connor, who is sadly missed but will always be remembered. Visit Victor’s Garden Bar for a relaxed drink and chat.
