P R OGR A M A FOLKBWORLD EVENT

Welcome to

FESTIVAL 2016

It is my great pleasure, once again, to invite you into this fabulous event that we share each year. I am immensely proud of the program presented here. Despite tough times in the arts sector, it is clear that Fairbridge Festival is resilient and remains a consistently compelling and inclusive event, with a program as diverse as the audience who enjoy it. Fairbridge Festival truly is a festival for and of the people – the ‘folk’, if you like! Consider for a moment this definition of a folk festival: “more than a diversity of folk music which only attracts a certain audience, it is a festival that embraces a diversity of folk coming together to enjoy all sorts of music”. For me this is a truer definition of what Fairbridge Festival offers. This is my second festival as Artistic Director. I heartily thank our brilliant team of programmers, assistant directors and artists support staff for all the work they have done. Be it the wonderful children’s program or the stunning line-up at the new “Backlot” venue (formerly Youthopia); the passion of our programmers is critical to the success of the festival. This of course is underpinned by an administration team and board that share an equal passion for all we do. I know that barely a day passes without them thinking about our core business, our visions for the future and making sure the experience for you, our treasured audience, is rich and rewarding. The program is now in your hands and I invite you to enjoy every corner of it. Beneath the beautiful design of this booklet sits many a hidden treasure, and your festival experience will be all the more rewarding for taking the time to delve into these pages. The program is layered and rich, the bounty deep. Have a brilliant time! Rod Vervest Artistic Director

Ha-monically, temp'st'rum'ented dub-ios folk and beltic revellery

With some drums, a cello and a “tinstrument’, this trio from the forest will get your knees flying, your eyes gleaming and your heels stomping. Colin Driscoll and Neil McArthur, AKA the Inglorious Bardsters, are both Victorianbased bush poets who write and perform their own individual styles of original bush poetry and comedy. Witty, sometimes serious but mostly downright hilarious, these two blokes prove that modern day bush poetry is not only about cattle drives, sunlit plains and dying horses. With poem titles such as Bowel Scan Blues, The Cow Creek Ladies First Aide Club, Memoirs of a Sheep and Shopping Trolley Rage, it is no wonder the Inglorious Bardsters are forging a cult following worthy of any Tarantino production. Check them out at the Poets Breakfast each morning or join their workshops where they pose the question... Who says "Rhyme Doesn't Pay?" jones oF A.R.K. Jones of A.R.K. heartlessly explore music genres and use them mercilessly in their observational witty ditties. Employing soaring harmonies and inappropriate instruments, Mel (Vocals, Ukelele and silly small things) and Nikki (Vocals, Guitarlele and other silly small things) are ably assisted by their band of idiots, Dave Hoffman, who speaks fluent piano accordion, and Rob Kay, on interjections and U-bass. perth morris men

Mad Tatters Morris

The Perth Morris Men present ancient and not so ancient traditional Morris dances from the Cotswold Hills and other areas of England. The presentation is lively and spectacular. The music is live and the dances range from the gentle handkerchief waving to vigorous mock battle dances with large sticks.

The Mad Tatters Morris dancers are women and men who perform traditional dances from English villages along the border between England and Wales. The original idea was to scare away Welsh people! They dance with clashing sticks and lots of shouting.

ZEN GARDEN

Zen Garden is an installation consisting of two main features – a diverse network of hanging kokedama clay-moss balls and a central Zen Garden area with a large, shallow sandpit raked and groomed in the Japanese karesansui “dry landscape” style, including feature rocks and plants. The garden will be transient, ever changing and at the whim of any and all who wish to interact with it. Discovet this peaceful place on the way to Djindalux.

CUSP Director Prof Dora Marinova will host short presentations followed by a Q&A panel on various aspects of sustainability, climate change and our next steps together. CUSP specialises in projects that blend theory with practice to create sustainable outcomes. The international Climate Change Accord at Paris (Dec 2015) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals launched in Sept 2015 have created unprecedented affirmation for constructive local and global action for sustainability.

Mainstreaming High Performance Housing Josh’s House is an innovative two-lot subdivision project in Hilton WA that demonstrates that high performance homes can be built for a comparable cost and timeframe to regular houses. The houses have been thoughtfully positioned for good solar orientation and to maximise gardening space. The homes collect and recycle water and generate their own power. The landscaping includes outdoor living areas built from locally sourced materials, strategic shading, extensive food production, native gardens and engaging play spaces. Detailed monitoring is being undertaken and communicated as part of a high profile research project through Curtin University and the CRC for Low Carbon Living. Josh will be explaining the key design features of his house and the data to date. Josh Byrne is an environmental scientist, landscape designer and TV presenter. He is Director of Josh Byrne & Associates – a multi award-winning Fremantle-based consulting practice integrating the fields of landscape architecture, environmental engineering and urban water management, and a Research Fellow with Curtin University’s Sustainability Policy Institute. Josh is well known for his role on ABC TV’s Gardening Australia program where, over the past 12 years, he’s demonstrated practical ways to create sustainable urban landscapes to a national audience.

Please come and chat with us at the CUSP tent about YOUR sustainability research ideas anytime. CUSP is delighted to be affiliated with the sustainability initiatives of Fairbridge Festival. We look forward to working with other community groups and businesses who want to move towards sustainability pathways. Further details: Dr Gary Burke gary.burke@curtin.edu.au

care about your community? With proper planning and product implementation, footpaths can be built once to prevent ongoing maintenance and liability hazards that use resources which could be spent improving other local council initiatives.

TripStop™ is a patented unique jointing system made from a rigid PVC profile that simultaneously separates and joins concrete slabs to form a modular joint system that transfers load & stops displacements. TripStop turns ever increasing safety, maintenance & replacement issues into an ever decreasing one. If you include TripStop in your new and replacement footpaths programs you eliminate all future maintenance and replacements caused by tree root invasion and/or soil movement. •

Build infrastructure right in the 1st place and ensure a maintenance free path.

Segregate the slabs at the pour…no random slab cracking during the cure.

No displacements mean reduced back office, personal injury and litigation costs.

Eliminate grass and tree roots growing between the joints.

Easy to handle, quick to install and no special installation tools to clean up.

Guaranteed to save natural resources, repairs, waste, money and Co2

No edging of joints saves time and gives a smooth, bump free path.

RUBY’S This is a licensed and seated venue tucked in behind Fairbridge House and adjacent to the Garden Bar. One of our most popular venues – it is a place to sit, relax and enjoy a drink with your music. While it is informal, Ruby's is still a concert space and we ask that audiences keep noise to a minimum during the performances.
