1. PREFACE

As a former teacher for children and young people with many years of professional experience, I believe that education must prepare our youth to navigate everyday challenges and unlock their full potential. Strengthening the mental and sexual health of children and young people in both the public education system and society is crucial to this mission.

A central tenet of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals is the assurance that "no one will be left behind," ensuring that children and young people are included in all goals and targets. Unfortunately, the reality often falls short. Mental, and sexual health issues represent the greatest global burden of diseases among children and adolescents. There is a significant gap in policy development and implementation for child and adolescent health education, leading to dramatic longterm consequences.

If children and young people are our future and are to shape it, it is our responsibility to prepare them for a world facing major social, ecological, and economic challenges. This is where Taboobreaker makes a vital impact. By strengthening the potential of children and young people with globally applicable multi-channel learning programs, we equip them to face complex challenges and drive positive change in the world.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our mission.

Best regards,

As we reflect on the past year, I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support and dedication to Taboobreaker Association. Our mission to give back and empower young people through comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is stronger than ever.

Young people face significant barriers in accessing accurate mental and sexual health information, often encountering stigma and misinformation. Our flagship initiative, Love Land, addresses this global challenge by delivering engaging, gamified CSE through a mobile app, website, and train-the-trainer courses. This year, we have expanded Love Land's reach and impact, thanks to your generosity.

Your support has been instrumental in our progress. Together, we can overcome the global challenge of providing comprehensive sexuality education and create lasting change for young people worldwide.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our mission.

Best regards,

5 KARIN STIERLIN

EMPOWERING

5.1 LOVE LAND

SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE TO SAFELY TRANSITION INTO ADULTHOOD

THE MULTIPLE CHALLENGES OF THE TRANSITION INTO ADULTHOOD

The mental, physical and sexual health of young people is a global priority. Adolescence is a crucial life stage in which social and emotional skills, knowledge and behaviors are learned that shape future mental, physical and sexual health and are important for assuming adult roles in society.

CONSEQUENCES OF NEGLECTING MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND SEXUAL HEALTH

Mental, physical and sexual health education is still a taboo worldwide and therefore marginalised in both the public education sector and society, with enormous personal, social and economic consequences for too many young people on our planet:

Globally, 1 in 7 10-19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder.

(WHO 2021)

Globally, an estimated 14 % of adolescent girls and young women give birth before age 18.

(Unicef 2023)

Globally, every year 140’000 10-19-year-olds get infected with HIV.

(Unicef 2023)

Globally, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 13 men report having been sexually abused as a child aged 0-17 years.

(WHO 2022)

WHY COMPREHENSIVE SEXUALITY EDUCATION (CSE) IS CRUCIAL

• CSE is a key factor for a young person's mental, physical and sexual health development:

• CSE promotes young people's interpersonal relationship skills, coping strategies, dealing with violence or abuse, standing up for themselves and others, dealing with problematic partnerships and reducing shame, stigma and mental and physical discomfort.

• According to a study by the Guttmacher Institute,1 , young people who receive CSE are better able to balance their mental, physical and sexual health.

5.1 LOVE LAND - continued

Love Land – the multi-channel program

- Supporting young people to safely transition into adulthood

Love Land is a comprehensive multi-channel program encompassing a mobile app, a website, and a Train-theTrainer initiative. Through these three resources, our goal is to provide extensive support for young individuals, empowering them to develop essential skills, while also aiding adults in effectively teaching mental, physical, and sexual health education on a broader scale.

Love Land includes, in addition to physical and mental health empowerment, stigma reduction, prevention of sexual violence, unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, as well as teaching communication and decision-making skills to protect young people from life-long consequences such as teenage pregnancy, traumas or general health diseases.

Goals and

impact

Young people have the knowledge, sound decisions and communication skills to prevent engagement in risky behavior and to realise their wellbeing and economic potential. This aligns in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) of the UN:

Impact measurement

The content of Love Land is based on the International technical guidance on sexuality education by UNESCO 2017.

To determine the effectiveness of Love Land and support its dynamic development during and after implementation, Taboobreaker has partnered with the University of Cape Town (UCT), which will conduct quantitative and qualitative research.

Costello Medical has built the two models Social Return on Investment (SROI) and Cost Effectiveness Model (CEM) for Love Land in 2023.

Both models are available on request.

EMPOWERING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING

The relevance of mental health of children

Mental health is an essential part of children's overall health and has a complex interactive relationship with their physical health and their ability to succeed in school, at work, and in society.

Both physical and mental health affect how we think, feel, and act on the inside and outside

Consequences of neglecting mental health

Physical and mental health problems represent the greatest global burden of disease among children (and adolescents).

There is, however, lack of policy development and implementation for child physical and mental health education with dramatic long-term consequences such as:

Depression and anxiety disorders

Limited opportunities for education and employment

Increased risk of substance abuse

Up to 20% of children and adolescents suffer from mental disorders.

The most costly mental disease in our society have their roots in childhood.

They cause annual health care costs of US$ 1 trillion each year

6. HIGHLIGHTS 2023

Celebrating Our Achievements in Mental and Sexual Health Education

For over 30 years, I have eagerly awaited a comprehensive mental, physical, and sexual health program like Love Land

6.1 SROI FOR LOVE LAND

Summary of the potential of Love Land

We are grateful to Costello Medical for providing the Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis of the Love Land intervention on a pro bono basis. Their expertise and support have been invaluable in quantifying the socio-economic impact of our work, allowing us to demonstrate the value and potential of Love Land to our stakeholders and funding partners.

Introduction:

The Social Return on Investment (SROI) model, developed by Costello Medical for Taboobreaker Association, evaluates the socio-economic value generated by the Love Land intervention. This model provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential impact of Love Land, targeting young people in South Africa.

Key findings

20

6.1 SROI FOR LOVE LAND -

Socio – economic value

Conclusion:

Scalability: The SROI ratio increases as the number of game players increases. The intervention is scalable without significantly increasing overhead costs, making it highly efficient as more young people engage with the platform. The minimum number of game players required to achieve a positive returnon-investment is 19,055.

The SROI analysis confirms that the Love Land intervention has a significant positive socio-economic impact, particularly on young game players in South Africa. By improving SRH knowledge, personal development, and mental and physical health, Love Land demonstrates substantial potential to contribute to the well-being of young people. The model provides a conservative estimate, suggesting that the actual impact could be even greater as more data becomes available.

6.3 NEW CONTENT

Reward system “My Island”

In the realm of gamified learning, rewards are not just prizes ; they are the currency that transforms the quest for knowledge into an exhilarating journey, where every challenge conquered is a step closer to mastery, and every reward earned is a badge of achievement in the game of education .

A reward system in a gamified learning program offers several benefits, as it leverages psychological and motivational principles to enhance the learning experience

Taboobreaker has therefore integrated a well-designed reward system into Love Land in the form of its own island that can be individually decorated, which serves as a powerful tool to motivate, engage and reinforce positive learning behaviour, ultimately contributing to a more effective and enjoyable learning experience:

“My Island” is the island the gamer gets access to once they have successfully challenged the FOGG, that embodies the antagonist on Love Land

The gamer has the opportunity to furnish and decorate different places of the island such as the bungalow or swimming pool area with their individual choice.

In addition to the fun factor that this reward offers, “my island” also suggests a feeling of privacy and safe space.

25

Challenge the antagonist - the FOGG

In a gamified learning program, the antagonist serves as a challenging force or obstacle that learners must overcome to achieve their educational goals. This approach aims to make the learning process more immersive, enjoyable and effective

On Love Land, the antagonist, the FOGG is to create a sense of difficulty, tension and competition within the environment, motivating the learners to actively engage with the content and persist in their efforts to succeed.

The FOGG adds an element of excitement and urgency to the learning experience by challenging the player to beat it and making this a rewarding outcome for learners. This in turn promotes awareness of knowledge and decision-making skills.

Engaging with the two fictive characters YAO and Franck, both diagnosed with HIV and residents of Red Ribbon City, not only sensitizes players to the significance and adaptability of communication but also motivates them to incorporate these skills into their daily lives.

Communication on Red Ribbon City includes:

Disclosure and Emotional Support:

supporting in disclosing the HIV status to trusted friends, building a support network that can provide emotional assistance during challenging times.

Navigating Healthcare:

helping to actively participate in healthcare decisions and receive the best possible care.

Reducing Stigma and advocacy building:

educating about the virus to fostering a more informed and supportive community.

Building Peer Connections:

encouraging in connecting with others who share similar experiences and community networks that provide valuable emotional support, information, and a sense of belonging.

Coping with Mental Health Challenges

supporting in expressing emotions and engage in conversations about mental wellbeing

Empowerment and Resilience:

encouraging in expressing needs, actively participating in care, to navigate life with increased confidence and resilience.

Podcast – Radio Love Land

Communication entails challenging societal stigmas and advocating for meaningful causes. Leveraging the expansive reach of social media can amplify these efforts.

Taboobreaker has introduced Radio Love Land, a platform featuring podcasts that delve into stigmatized and sensitive topics found on Love Land, aiming to explore them in-depth.

The initial episode, dedicated to World AIDS Day 2023, featured YAO and Franck from Red Ribbon City at the Radio Love Land studio. They candidly discussed their fears, dreams, and aspirations for destigmatizing HIV.

Taboobreaker anticipates the potential of this format and eagerly looks forward to producing more podcasts and Radio Love Land programs.

Presentation at St. Johns College, Oxford

Our founder of Taboobreaker association tierlin was given the great honour of presenting Love Land to the Saint John’s College Women's Network (SJC Women's Network), Oxford 15. September 2023.

Oxford Presentation Highlights: Pioneering Digital Innovation in Sexual Health Education for the Next Generation

Below is the report from Dr Kate Molesworth, President of the SJC Women's Network, on the global sexual and reproductive health (SRH) situation and the urgent need for SRH education programs such as Love Land

The report focused on the critical need for comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) as a fundamental component in empowering young people globally. Recognizing the challenges in sexual and reproductive health such as HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancies, the presenter underscored the importance of evidence-based information to enhance health, well-being, and dignity among youth.

Global Need for CSE:

The United Nations entities like UNESCO, UNFPA, and WHO have developed technical guidance to support the effective delivery of comprehensive sexuality education, which is vital for equipping youth with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values. This guidance is aimed at helping young people develop healthy social and sexual relationships and make informed decisions affecting their well-being.

Challenges in Implementation:

Despite the availability of international guidelines, the integration of comprehensive sexuality education often falls short in national curricula due to varying priorities and the sensitive nature of the subject matter. The report highlights a global discrepancy in the delivery of CSE, with many educational systems failing to fully implement these programs.
