MARCH BOARD AND COMMITTEE MEETINGS UPDATE

The Spring 2025 run of bull sales is complete and Simmental sales once again led the way for all breeds in Canada, due to the overall demand for Simmental genetics, combined with the quality of product on offer by Simmental breeders. Sustained optimism from a strong 2024 feeder calf market was able to offset the concern of possible US tariffs on beef, cattle and genetics. Thankfully they did not materialize, and many producers breathed a big sigh of relief. Simmental genetics are the foundation of any good cattle operation, however a little luck and some help from Mother Nature also helps the bottom line. We are counting on her to produce some favorable weather conditions this growing season.

The Canadian Simmental Association directors, committee members traveled to Calgary for the CSA spring meetings March 16-18 for board and committee meetings. New to the schedule this year was a day and half planning session involving the CSA board which was held prior to the regular meetings. Many previous CSA directors will remember Charlene Waugh who facilitated similar events for the CSA approximately fifteen years ago. It was also very useful to have Dale Kelly join for part of the session and share his memories and experiences that helped establish the structure and success that we enjoy today. The planning process is never complete, and we will be continuing to polish up our crystal balls in deciding direction for the CSA for the next 5-10-20 years.

The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) board meeting led off the regular set of meetings, and we discussed planning for the 2025 FCSF auction that will be held during the CSA Convention in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Ashworth Land and Cattle, Kelly and Janice Ashworth and family have donated a bred heifer for this year’s auction, and we thank them for their generosity! The FCSF board of directors also decided to commit travel assistance to YCSA National Classic and to the YCSA TEAM Leadership conference in Guelph, Ontario. The CSA and YCSA greatly appreciate that commitment.

On the CSA Promotion committee’s Monday agenda was a review of the Simmental Country and Commercial Country magazines. We are always looking for ways to improve production and content in our magazines while being mindful of efficiency and the bottom line financially. The 2025 Simmental Award of Excellence (AOE) show recognition program was reviewed, and we will be working with the Provincial Simmental Associations to streamline and improve the program in some key areas. Red Flame Ranch has again agreed to sponsor the buckles for the Female and Male Grand Champions.

The Breed Improvement Committee (BIC) meeting followed with discussion around various CSA genetic improvement programs, as well as computer and registry system processes, and ways we can provide better service to the CSA membership. DNA rebates are being applied in two options to THE members and complete details are found in the last few editions of the CSA e-News and on our website.

The CSA Board of Director’s meeting wrapped up the three day session and included reporting and vetting of the previous day’s committee discussions and their recommendations. In addition to that, Jennifer Scott joined the meeting to provide the YCSA report which highlighted the plans they are making towards the TEAM Conference and 2025 National Classic.

The 2025 CSA Annual General meeting returns to a face-to-face AGM and Convention and will be held in Weyburn July24th – 27th. The Saskatchewan Simmental Association is hard at work with planning and fundraising so be sure to make plans to attend and enjoy some Western Canadian small-town hospitality. The 2025 Canadian National Simmental show returns to Quebec this year and will be held during Expo Boeuf in Victoriaville October 9-12th. Watch future CSA communications for further details on all these events and plan on joining the Simmental excitement!

We are also excited to have Olivia Woytiuk join our CSA team as a summer intern who will work directly on the Canadian Simmental Association’s Legacy project. Partial funding for that is being supported by the FCSF.

On a final note, Randy Noble, Saskatchewan, Barclay Smith, and Kyle Lewis, both from Alberta, were returned to the CSA board of directors for three-year terms. Blair Williamson will be the new CSA director from Ontario, and will be replacing retiring director and past President Shane Williams. We welcome all of them and look forward to their contributions to the CSA membership and its representation.

We encourage you to contact one of your CSA directors or myself for further information regarding anything mentioned in this article, and check www.simmental.com or our monthly e-News for updates. All the best with your spring seeding operations and may Mother Nature smile on us all throughout the 2025 growing season!

BREED IMPROVEMENT

Breed Improvement

for the Canadian Simmental Association

BUILDING A BIGGER COWHERD AND SERVING OUR CUSTOMERS GENOMICALLY

The CSA and its members have adopted genomic testing in a significant way. Animals that are tested with 100K or “High Density – HD” tests have these genomic results included in the genetic evaluation with IGS. Any animal that has results included appears with the IGS logo at the top of their animal information in the CSA herdbook lookup. (Figure 1.)

This logo helps to identify tested animals but more importantly the information contained in the test helps to increase the accuracy of the resulting EPD. This means that we have more information on the animal’s genetics and therefore we have an improved ability to select using the EPD.

Part of this improvement is due to confirmation of parentage or sire. This improves accuracy of pedigree. A genetic evaluation relies on accurate pedigrees, as we know that ½ of an animal’s DNA is inherited from the sire and ½ from the dam. It is therefore important to accurately identify who the sire and dam are if possible. Further to this several of the DNA markers are associated with various traits. When we calculate an EPD we are really predicting what DNA the animal has to pass on to their offspring or progeny – “Expected Progeny Differences”. While the markers are not necessarily the exact gene and many traits are influenced by multiple genes, they do provide us an insight into the DNA that the animal carries and can pass on to its’ progeny.

A way to think about this information is in a progeny equivalent. By looking at the animal’s DNA directly, it is similar to looking at how that DNA is expressed in the next generation. The number of progeny that would have to have recorded information to match the power of a high-density genotype is shown in Table 1.

Traits with a higher progeny equivalency, basically mean that we have identified markers that explain more of the variation in the trait. This could be a combination of markers that are closer to influential genes or more markers that are known for the trait. While genotyping does represent an expense, I am not aware of too many ways to obtain 25 or more calves or even 4 (in the case of Maternal Calving Ease) for $50.

This can be extremely valuable for smaller herds that are working on breeding high quality cattle, as it propels their data into the same equivalency as much larger herds. For example: a herd of 10 enrolled cows that genotypes all their calves and reports their data will have the equivalent of 260 birth weights (10 actual birthweights, and 25+ progeny equivalents x 10 cows) and will even have the equivalent of 70 marbling score records (10 marbling score ultrasound records and 10 progeny equivalents x 10 cows). Obviously larger herds would have a larger cost, but the cost per calf is identical.

It remains important to collect and report phenotypic data on animals and this is what drives marker validation and discovery work, but genotyping offers a tool to expand our knowledge about traits at an early age and thus make more effective decisions as a breeder. An additional advantage may be in genotyping sale animals to ensure pedigree integrity, improve accuracy of the EPD, but also to empower our customers to participate in genomics without a lot of additional effort. For example, a commercial bull customer may want to sire sort replacement heifers. If the bull they buy is already done, the SNP or genotype data is stored in a computer and that customer does not have to genotype or re-genotype the bull to select replacement heifers from specific pedigrees.

If you are not using genomic technology and reporting phenotypic data, we would encourage you to consider the tools going forward. Genotyping is a powerful tool that can improve our odds as breeders to select the best animals for our goals going forward.

Mark Stock working as a ringman mid 1980s

Mark Stock still enjoys the

PUREBRED SALES RING

Mark Stock feels blessed. More than 50 years of working in purebred livestock sales rings and he still enjoys the work and connecting with producers and friends from across Canada.

Stock, who was born and raised on the family farm at Hazlet in the Sandhills of southwest Saskatchewan, began learning the ropes of the purebred livestock sales as a teenager in the mid 1970s. Hazlet is a village about 40 miles northwest of Swift Current, the last stop on Highway 332. The Stock farm was about 18 miles west of the village.

While he ranched and raised commercial cattle for about 40 years, for the most of five decades he also provided ring services, working as a ringman for purebred livestock sales mostly across Western Canada.

“In the summer of 1974, Dennis Ericson of Transcon Livestock came to the farm at Hazlet to look at some Simmental cattle my dad was raising, and I asked if Transcon was looking for any extra help,” recalls Stock. “As it turned out they could use help.” In those days, Transcon Livestock was a relatively new sales management company founded by Rodney James in Alberta in 1967.

Stock’s first job at sales involved checking ear tatoos, applying back tags on cattle and bringing cattle up from the pens so they were ready to go through the sales ring. While still involved with the home ranch, he worked for Transcon for a few years, until in the fall of 1978 when he was offered a job with Simmental Scene Magazine as an advertising sales rep in Saskatchewan.

“And as a sales rep, the deal was if you sold a two page ad to a purebred producer, the magazine offered to provide someone to work the sale ring for that advertiser,” says Stock. “That’s how I started as a ringman. I was learning something new by working in the ring and hopefully I’d be able to sell them another ad in the process.”

He continued working for Simmental Scene until it was sold to another publishe r. And while he could have continued in the same role with the new owner, he decided to change gears and become an independent service provider offering his ringman services to the purebred industry.

As Stock worked more purebred sales and worked with different auctioneers, he became known and sought after to work more purebred sales. “Your main job is to watch crowd sitting in the bleachers and let the auctioneer know when someone makes a bid,” he says. “But as I gained experience, people also called to ask my opinion on particular animals.

“As the sales management companies got to know who you were, you were called,” he says. “And auctioneers got to know you as well, so they would request your services. In the early days George Anderson of Hussa r, AB was probably the leader in ring services, followed by Dennis Ericson of Wetaskiwin, AB and then myself.”

Stock divided his time between the home ranch, which produced a Simmental/Angus commercial beef herd and providing ringman services. He retired from ranching about 11 years ago. With the final sale of the property, he moved to the village of Hazlet in 2014.

At the peak of his ring services career, Stock attended up to 90 purebred sales per year, travelling anywhere from B.C. to Ontario, with the bulk of his work in the three prairie provinces.

“Ring services are required during two peak periods of the year,” he says. “You have a two month gig between midOctober and mid-December which are mostly female sales, and then another two months between mid-February and mid-April which are mostly bull sales.

“And it involves a lot of travelling,” he says, noting he is about to turn 70 this year. “I am cutting back a bit, but fortunately I am still able to travel and still enjoy it.”

Looking back a few years he remembers a schedule that required him to be on an airplane 16 days in the month of March.

“One run I had involved leaving Calgary on a Friday morning to fly to Grande Prairie in the Peace River Region for a sale, and then back to Calgary to catch a 7 p.m. flight to Winnipeg. From Winnipeg, I drove to Brandon, getting there at about 1 a.m. and then I worked a sale later that day in Virden. From there it was on to Regina, then back to Calgary for a sale the next day south of Calgary. The schedule could be hectic.”

Although he has cut back his work schedule to about 45 sales per year, he still puts in lots of travelling.

Depending on the size of the sale and facilities, Stock usually worked each sale with one other ringman, often there could be three ringmen, and on larger sales as many as four ringmen.

“My job is to watch my section of the crowd and communicate bids to the auctioneer,” he says. “You interact with the crowd to a certain extent, hopefully to keep everyone engaged, but the goal is to keep things moving. Not everyone can work at a pace where an auctioneer is selling an animal every 45 to 60 seconds, which many of them do. One of my sayings is that a good sale shouldn’t take very long and a bad sale should take even less time.”

Stock says the structure of purebred livestock sales has changed over the years, transitioning from live sales where each animal is brought into a sales ring in front of buyers to today being mostly video or on-line sales. The crowd is still in the bleachers, but the cattle now appear on video, and buyers can make bids as they watch each animal on the TV monitor.

“I remember some of the first video sales were about 20 years ago, and then each year you started to see more video sales and on-line bidding,” says Stock. “I must admit that early on I wasn’t sure if a sale involving on-line bidding would last, but I became a convert. The vast majority of sales today are video and the on-line bidding works very well. Personally, I don’t think there is any reason not to have a video sale.

“You don’t need a sales ring to handle cattle or a bunch of neighbours to bring animals in and out of the sale ring. With most of the on-farm sales, a lot of people set up portable bleachers in a quonset, with a video screen and auctioneer block and they are ready to hold a sale. If buyers want to look at live cattle they can go out to the pens and then come back inside for the video sale.”

After about 50 years in the business, Stock says he is now working with many who are the second generation on the farm and second generation ownership of sales management companies. “You develop a lot of relationships and friendships over the years,” he says. “And I still enjoy it. I love the people, and I love the livestock industry. The excitement of a fastpaced sale keeps me involved. And someday WHEN I retire I will have to give all that up, so as long as I feel good and still enjoy travelling, I’ll keep at it for a while yet.”

Mark Stock left, his parents Sam and Beatrice Stock and TransCon representative Dennis Ericson.

The Canadian Simmental Association’s

2025 BOARD DIRECTORS of

Four positions were open for the 2025 Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Board of Directors. All four positions were filled by acclamation, with one newly elected director who will assume his threeyear commitment at the conclusion of the AGM held on July 26, 2025. We thank retiring director Shane Williams for his contributions to the CSA board over the past 6 years.

ALBERTA - BARCLAY SMITH – ELECTED BY ACCLAMATION

Hello, my name is Barclay Smith and I am a part of SIBL Simmentals. SIBL Simmentals was established in 1994 with the purchase of one bred heifer from the Northern Image sale at Farmfair. My beginning in purebred Simmentals began in the fall of 1993 with the purchase of a 4-H heifer that was purebred Simmental. My junior membership was established as CLAY Simmentals that fall. Over the past almost 30 years we have raised fullblood, fleckvieh, and red and black Simmental cattle. After my return from college and beginning a career in the livestock feed industry, we increased our focus on raising bulls and expanding our cowherd. Our herd grew slowly over the next number of years to breeding approximately 85 females in the spring of 2018. However this number was not sustainable, with a young family and full-time, off-farm careers. The decision was made to sell half of our female base later that fall. That sale was also the dispersal of our fleckvieh females. Over the last 23 years I spent time as a 4-H leader, worked with some very outstanding Simmental breeders, and have gained a great deal of knowledge from some of the most respected breeders. I changed careers in 2010 and have been employed with AFSC (Agriculture Financial Services Corporation). During my time with AFSC I have been in a leadership role for most of 15 years, covering various areas of the business from lending to insurance and risk management, and a term role as the manager for the Livestock Price Insurance program, which covered the western provinces. The livestock industry is my passion, and I have had the pleasure of being the finance chair for the last 2 years, and I look forward to being apart of the CSA board for another 3-year term and contributing to the success of the Simmental Breed.

ALBERTA – KYLE LEWIS – ELECTED BY ACCLAMATION

My name is Kyle Lewis, and I am part of the 4th generation at Lewis Farms, established in 1932. We’ve been raising seedstock since the 70’s. I farm alongside my family, my wife, Alexis, and 4 kids - Dysen, Rylan, Kolter, and Haizley. Also my folks, Ken and Corrie Lewis are actively involved. I graduated Lakeland College in 2009 with an Animal Science program. Lewis Farms is currently running 700 Simmental cows and 300 Angus cows. We host an annual female sale on the last Thursday in November with guest consignors, as well as our annual bull sale on the last Saturday in February. We sell roughly 300 bulls each year at the farm. Our kids enjoy showing cattle, and hockey, so I try and do as much of those 2 things with them as I can. The CSA is currently in tremendous hands. Lead by Jennie Mutch, the board is incredibly devoted to the breed and the betterment of Simmental cattle. I’ve never been apart of a volunteer organization that cares as much and devotes the time to make our breed a leader in Canada.

SASKATCHEWAN – RANDY NOBLE – ELECTED BY ACCLAMATION

Randy grew up on a family farm northeast of Lloydminster, where he and his family reside today. Randy’s parents had registered cattle in the 1970’s. In the early 80’s, Randy and his 3 brothers started Black Gold Simmental. Black Gold Simmental continues to be a noble family operation with a cow herd of 280 fullblood and purebred cows. The younger generations have rejuvenated our passion for the Simmental breed and raising high quality cattle. We enjoy participating in the cattle shows and we host two annual sales each year: a Female sale in October, and a Bull sale in March.

ONTARIO – BLAIR WILLIAMSON – ELECTED BY ACCLAMATION

My name is Blair Williamson from Lambton Shores, Ontario. I own and operate Ridgeview Cattle Co. The herd consists of red, black, and fullblood Simmentals. Bulls are marketed off the farm privately in the spring, and females are sold annually in the RPCC and Guest’s Fall Gala Sale.

I have just completed 6 years on the Ontario Simmental Association board of directors, serving the last 3 as president. I am proud of the work we accomplished in that time. We have increased the association’s presence to commercial cattle producers and hosted a very successful CSA AGM and YCSA National Classic, to list a couple things. I also have served as the OYCSA adult advisor for the last couple of years.

I have served both the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the Beef Farmers of Ontario in advisory roles. I am currently appointed to the Livestock Financial Protection Board by the Provincial Agricultural Minister. The board oversees a fund of money and adjudicates claims to protect producers against non-payment from a licenced dealer. I work in the insurance industry, providing me with risk management experience. I would like to thank the Ontario Simmental Association for supporting my nomination to the CSA board of directors. It would be my honour to serve the CSA membership on the CSA board. I think my past experience will be a positive asset to the board as they continue to work at moving the breed forward. If you have any questions or would like to chat, please feel free to reach out. I hope I can count on your support. Thanks!

2025 CSA 100K DNA Program

CANADIAN CATTLE ASSOCIATION

SPRING UPDATES AND PRIORITIES FOR CCA

The start of my term as president comes during an odd combination of events. Purebred producers are done with calving and bull sales, and are submitting pedigree transfers and registration paperwork while commercial producers are in the middle of calving. It’s a great time of year to be on a farm or ranch. Looking at my CCA commitments, a federal election campaign is underway. While this would traditionally be a quieter time for CCA, my calendar quickly filled up with invitations to attend meetings in Washington, D.C., and with key stakeholders in Canada as we continue to try and navigate the uncertainty and confusion about tariffs imposed by the United States.

Canada’s beef industry is heavily reliant on exports which makes it crucial for CCA to dedicate attention to maintaining market access. That is not an easy task, but there are a couple of silver linings for us. First is that we as beef producers are not in this situation alone. The entire world is impacted and nearly all Canadian industries and businesses are impacted. The second positive element is that we have the National Beef Strategy, developed by the National Beef Advisors, to guide our response. The Strategy helps assure consistent messaging among the entire Canadian beef industry.

There are some in the industry who urge us to pursue other markets that have potential for increased exports. Canada Beef is working hard on this task to ensure that we are prepared for all possible outcomes. Even amongst this tariff uncertainty, the United States is an economic powerhouse that not only takes a large percentage of Canadian beef products, their consumers are willing to pay high prices for beef. I believe that the North American cattle market is complimentary. We are more efficient together from a global perspective. CCA is committed to continued advocacy on behalf of an integrated North American cattle market, and we hope that it will prevail. When CCA travels to attend meetings in the USA, we take a message supporting the integrated cattle and beef market. Increased market access around the world can only lead to increased demand for beef, requiring more cattle production and more opportunities for producers.

There is no question that tariffs are the main area of focus, but they are by no means the only topic that CCA is working on. Of increased importance following the recent CCA AGM is a renewed focus on animal disease preparedness. It cannot be stressed enough that traceability and biosecurity must be a priority for beef producers, not just in Canada, but around the world. The ongoing situation with Foot and Mouth Disease in Eastern Europe is of huge concern. Here in Canada, we need a traceability system that works for industry and accounts for our reliance on trade. Our industry takes pride in our commitment to continuous improvement,

and it is through that commitment and ongoing consultations between producers and industry that we make these incremental gains to livestock traceability CCA has been involved throughout the process, and we look forward to improvements and simplifications.

Biosecurity is another topic that needs far more attention than it receives. As an industry we have some improvements to make, and we simply must be better prepared. Beef Cattle Research Council and Animal Health Canada recently launched a series of biosecurity resources focused on Foot and Mouth Disease, but these best practices are applicable for preventing all animal diseases. Visit www.beefresearch.ca/topics/ foot-and-mouth-disease to learn more. Most of these resources are also available in French and some are also in Spanish.

To try and reach more producers, I have started recording some short video clips that are being shared on CCA’s Facebook, Twitter/X and LinkedIn accounts. There are so many different types of social media platforms, and we all receive so many emails and text messages every day that it can be very difficult to be heard when you have something to share and to find information that is important to you, especially if you’re not certain when you should be looking for it. I hope that these videos will help CCA’s posts stand out in your social media feeds.

Although our industry is facing a lot of challenges, I am feeling very optimistic about the future. It is important to maintain our focus on young producers. There are great incentives to get into the cattle business, but we need to provide tools for new and young producers to manage the risk that is required to invest in land and cattle. CCA will pursue these needs with the new federal government following the election.

In the fall, I took the plunge into examining the potential of genomic tools and artificial intelligence. For the first time, I submitted samples for genomic testing and received GEPDs (genomically enhanced expected progeny differences) for some of my cattle. It has been a fascinating and eye-opening experience with a bit of a steep learning curve. The data I received has provided so many insights into my cattle herd and decisions that didn’t quite yield the results I expected. I believe that we are barely scratching the surface when it comes to the power of data and the insights that it can provide. I am excited to watch these tools and technologies that help cattle producers grow and evolve.

THIS ANIMAL HAS

Figure 1.

Poids à un an 25+ Docilité 25+

VET’S ADVICE

VACCINE SELECTION FOR CATTLE

There are a multitude of diseases to consider vaccinating for, and these diseases come in a multitude of vaccine combinations with different types of administration routes (subcutaneous or intramuscular) as well as different dosage amounts (usually two five cc’s). These possibilities should all be considered when choosing vaccines. First and foremost, use the advice of your local herd veterinarian. He/ she will have chosen the most appropriate vaccines for your geographic area in the best combinations available, to minimize the amount of needles to be given. Veterinarians are an invaluable resource when it comes to vaccine selection - a very critical point of biosecurity for your commercial or purebred operation. Fellow purebred breeders should also discuss vaccine protocols amongst themselves, and this becomes extremely critical when purchases are made from each other - discussions should include what the incoming cattle are protected against, and what your cattle are protected against when you sell them.

Vaccine companies, generally speaking, are producing more and more vaccines in multiple combinations. This is because there are now several diseases, which are routinely vaccinated for on most farms. By having less choice, it is less confusing to producers, fewer needles are necessary, and the cost per disease treated actually comes down. Veterinarians make the choices as to which vaccine lines to carry based on several things: effectiveness, diseases covered, route of administration, dosage amount, and dose size per container. Availability, price, timing of administration, and service given by the sales force are all considered when making the selection. All reputable companies have data to support the effectiveness of their vaccine over others. We really are almost comparing apples to apples when comparing the numerous vaccines available from the reputable companies if they cover the same diseases. Make sure the vaccines you use cover the diseases you need to prevent.

A few misconceptions are changing vaccine lines, and the thought of needing to start the whole vaccine protocol over again. Different vaccine lines will booster the immune response from a previous vaccination from a different line of vaccines. Of course, the diseases in the vaccines must be the same. The important thing to remember, whether it be from previous vaccination or exposure to the real disease, revaccination stimulates the body’s immune system to develop further protection from sickness. Generally speaking, this is where the modified live vaccines (mixing the powder and the fluid together) will give longer lasting immunity than the killed viral vaccines.

Certain geographic areas in Canada have a higher incidence of specific diseases, and vaccination may be considered. An example of this would be Clostridium Hemolyticum in West Central Alberta. Horses are vaccinated for rabies in certain regions of eastern Canada. Herds that have had prior history of leptospirosis may vaccinate, and in outbreaks of Anthrax, the contact herd as well as neighbouring herds may be vaccinated in the current year and forward in subsequent years. Other diseases that are reportable in Canada, such as foot and mouth disease or brucellosis are not allowed to be vaccinated for in Canada, even though a vaccine exists. That’s because we are free of these diseases, and want to keep the disease out. If we were to vaccinate, the protection the vaccine affords could mask symptoms and carrier animals might develop. Tests for disease exposure often cannot differentiate between exposure to the real disease or vaccination, so eradication is therefore difficult.

In most herds across Western Canada, commercial and purebred vaccination for the diseases of IBR, BVD (type 1 and 2), PI3, clostridials (blackleg group 7 or 8 way or now 9 way and soon to be a 10 way), histophilus, and BRSV are pretty much

commonplace. I have specifically listed the diseases here, as there are many trade names available. I never get into which vaccine is better, as all vaccines have passed testing for efficacy. Certain vaccines may offer a certain advantage over the other, but that is up to you and your herd veterinarian to determine the best combination for your farm, ideally one that minimizes the number of needles. For young calves up to and past weaning, the two respiratory pathogens Pasteurella and Mannheimia are becoming commonplace as well. With some companies’ vaccines, protection against all these organisms is achieved with only two shots. Some other products even come as intranasal vaccines, which offer quick protection without needles. Intranasal technology is becoming more common, even in very young calves. A large number of calves are vaccinated with intranasals before a week of age. These can offer quick protection to many of the viruses and bacteria causing pneumonia. Most are set up now for giving the 2cc dose up one nostril.

Scours vaccination is becoming commonplace for the breeding animals, especially in larger herds. There are three types of scour vaccines on the market. All of which are good, it is just a matter of timing. They are all better to give at different times before calving, so you technically pick the vaccine that fits your best time to vaccinate. A multitude of other vaccines, foot rot especially in the breeding bulls, are common with pinkeye vaccines and leptospirosis vaccines, which are used if problems have occurred in the past. Vaccines are a form of biosecurity for your cattle. If you have a disease outbreak, it is often too late to vaccinate, but the intranasal vaccines or the scours vaccines are sometimes given in the face of an outbreak.

Storage of vaccines (almost all need to be refrigerated) and handling when administered are critical to getting the maximum effect. Freezing or overheating of the vaccine before administration cannot be tolerated. Label your syringes so as not to mix different vaccines and make sure to give the vaccines a handbreadth apart, preferably on opposite sides of the neck. Another option for me is neck and behind the shoulder, depending on chute access. Only mix up enough of the modified live vaccines to use in one hour. Take your time and administer the vaccines properly. Change needles frequently and mark them accordingly. They are insurance against the calves not getting sick, so take your time and ensure the best immunity. Make sure your cattle are also treated for worms and lice to minimize these parasites. With parasites removed, the calves will develop much better protection from the vaccines. The fall is the ideal time to completely review your vaccination program, so you can add in further protection if it is available. When selling purebred or commercial cattle, especially out of area, make sure the purchaser indicates if there is anything specific to vaccinate for. Always make sure to pass on the animals’ vaccination, parasite control and nutritional information to the new owner. That will start the discussion about vaccination programs. Vaccination programs vary slightly across the country, and this is good information to know so you can vaccinate the cattle before they go. Eastern Canada often will vaccinate for leptospirosis, but it is very rare in the West. This process is called preimmunization, which is vaccinating before exposure to allow maximum protection to develop. This will generally take ten days to two weeks. There are no magic bullets of vaccination replacing good management. Proper nutrition, parasite control, minimizing stress by handling, and sanitation go a long way to preventing disease. All of this augmented with a properly thought out and implemented vaccination program will severely reduce the incidence of those diseases on your farm. Talk to your veterinarian, as new products and methods of administration are coming out all the time.

PROMINENT INDUSTRY LEADER

Brian has been a life-long Simmental member and promotor of the Simmental breed and has been involved in the cattle industry all his adult life having been raised on a mixed agricultural farm. He purchased his first purebred Simmental in the early 1970’s when the Simmental craze hit a high. He served on the Regina Bull Sale Committee serving a term as chairman of the board. A highlight of that tenure being the inclusion of the Simmental breed in the Regina Bull Sale. He was on the Sask Simmental Board of Directors, serving a term as president. He resigned from the Saskatchewan Simmental Board to join the Canadian Simmental Board of Directors as a board member from 1985-1988.

Brian has been involved in all aspects of the cattle industry, all the while being a Simmental breeder. He went from purebred Simmental breeder in Saskatchewan to feedlot manager at Carberry Feeders, Carberry, MB from 1987-1991. He then took a position with Alta Genetics, Bearspaw, AB marketing and

promoting Canadian genetics while selling live cattle and beef genetics throughout the world. In 1995 Brian formed Bouchard Livestock International, a beef marketing and genetic company sourcing and marketing beef genetics throughout the world.

He was a founding member of the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation serving as vice president from 2012-2023. He was instrumental in starting the annual auction at the CSA convention that provides funding to help promote Simmental and provides educational support to youth in the industry.

He was honored to being named to the Simmental Hall of Fame in 2024, as he continues his involvement in the cattle industry. INDUCTED INTO
