Starptautiskais keramikas simpozijs “Disign and Wood firing”

Tajā iekļautas lekcijas, meistarklases, profesionālā prakse, darbu apdedzināšana malkas ceplī Ikšķilē, muzeju, galeriju apmeklēšana un dalība POP-UP izstādē.

Starptautiskais studentu simpozija formāts attīsta daudzpusīgas dalībnieku prasmes un ir lielisks stimuls jauno mākslinieku radošai izaugsmei.

The International Symposium of Ceramics ‘Design and Wood firing’, 2-8th September 2024, Riga

During the first week of September 2024, the International Symposium of Ceramics ‘Design and Wood firing’ took place here in Riga and Ikšķile. It was organized by the Department of Ceramics of the Art Academy, supported by programs Cirrus and Nordplus. Students, pedagogues – experts in materiality of ceramics from the higher educational establishments in the Baltics and Scandinavia (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Norway, Sweeden, Finland) participated in this symposium. In total there were 30 participants. This time every participant was given an opportunity to create a contemporary ceramic design object with tinges of the 21st century where an artifact of traditional Latvian ceramics was used as an inspirational source.

A milk pincher by A.P.Riuču (museum valued artifact) is in the depository of the Department of Ceramics of the Art Academy.

In tandem, brothers Polikarps and Antons Riuči, potters from Latgale, created a workshop in 1930 ies’. Throwing was mainly carried out by Anton, while Polikarps ensured the decoration of vessels. In 1937, brothers Polikarps and Antons Riuči were awarded a silver medal in the International Exposition of Art and Technology, in Paris.

Our students and participants of the symposium from other countries could examine the secrets of the unique Latvian traditional pattern making and by a professional approach could create their own design in presence. Nordplus program unites various countries and cultures in one project; perception and the viewpoint of participants differ. The result is compelling due to differences in perception, a view of our culture from apart, a fresh look – each participant singles out priorities that are worlds apart.

During the symposium the program was performed at its full. It was comprised of lectures, master classes, professional practice, firing in the wood-fired kiln in Ikšķile, attendance of museums, galleries and participation at POP-UP exhibition.

The International Student Symposium is a good pattern in shaping creativity and personal growth of young artists; it develops skillfulness in a wide range of areas of concern.
