Keramikas un porcelāna mākslas kolekcijas glabātāja LNMM Dekoratīvās mākslas un dizaina muzejā, grāmatas “Baltars” autore.

Dace Ļaviņa

Keeper of the Art Collection of Ceramics and Porcelain at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, LNMM, the author of the book Baltars

We were honored to welcome participants from the Symposium of Porcelain Painting to the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design this year. To me, as the curator of this collection, it was inspiring to see their genuine interest in our collection of ceramics and porcelain. In the centre of attention of the visit to the museum was the exposition of our art porcelain workshop Baltars, a part of the permanent exhibition Classical Values.

The pride of place in the collection of ceramics in the museum is given to the heritage of art of the porcelain painting workshop Baltars (ars Baltica, 1924–1930), being also shortlisted among the most precious artefacts in the Cultural Canon of Latvia. This collection represents the quintessence of classical modernism and Art Deco, virtuously embodied on plates, vases, and service sets as paintings. In 1924, three young artists – painters Romans Suta (1894–1944), Aleksandra Beļcova (1892–1981), and graphic artist Sigismunds Vidbergs (1890–1970) – chose porcelain as a material for their innovatively creative explorations. At the time, this was a significant challenge because of the technology that was not yet fully understood. With the enthusiasm and dedication of youth, they gradually developed a renowned workshop, where, with the expert assistance of master Dmitrijs Abrosimovs, porcelain items were painted according to the artists’ sketches, reflecting the ideology and fashion of the time –constructivism and Art Deco, as well as references of it have found their reflection in depiction of national themes on porcelain. The main task for these artists was to create a new porcelain art based on professional standards, contrasting to the factory mass-production. In 1925, Baltars participated in the International Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris and was awarded two gold medals and one bronze medal.

In the context of the geography of the exhibitions, other exhibitions, featuring their work, took place in Tallinn (Estonia), Kaunas (Lithuania), Vermlande (Sweden), Oslo (Norway), Prague (Czech Republic). Their artworks are also a part of the collection of the Sevres National Ceramic Museum in Paris (France). Baltars porcelain is now the pride of every museum and collector.

The participants of the Symposium could experience new emotions and inspirations for their creative work.
