English wine continues to sparkle

monasteries in 1536, others to an adverse change in the weather, that made an uncertain enterprise even more problematic.

Historically, English wines were relegated to niche farm shops or tucked away in a dusty supermarket corner and usually passed over for the classic French or Italian wines. But the industry has evolved and grown robustly in recent years.

England has a long tradition of viticulture. The Iron Age inhabitants imported considerable quantities of wine, but it seems likely that it was the Romans who introduced the first vineyards to the country. England benefited from the expertise of the French, when monks and noblemen crossed the channel during the Norman Invasion in 1066. The Domesday Book records 46 vineyards, with the area to the west of London being particularly prominent. Wine making expanded considerably in England during the Middle Ages, particularly on monastic and ecclesiastical estates. Although much of what was being produced, was for making communion wine for the Eucharist. When Henry VIII was crowned in 1509 there were 139 sizeable vineyards in England and Wales - 11 of them owned by the Crown, 67 by noble families and 52 by the church. It is not exactly clear why the number of vineyards declined subsequently. Some have put it down to the dissolution of the

In the 18th century, the Methuen Treaty of 1703 imposed high duties on French wine. This led to the English becoming a main consumer of sweet fortified wines like sherry, port wine, and Madeira wine from Spain and Portugal. Fortified wine became popular because unlike regular wine, it did not spoil after the long journey from Portugal to England. England’s viticulture fell into decline from the 1700’s through to the early 20th century. However, it wasn’t until the mid-1950’s and 60’s that commercial grape growing and wine making really began to take off; as Pioneers sought the grape varieties most suited to England’s climate and began to plant them in southern England.

British Wine makers, are no longer people making wine for a hobby or a retirement project, but people committed to making wine to equal the quality of the world’s best. Global viticultural research has enabled proprietors to identify the grapes most suitable for cultivating in England’s climate, and together with enhanced wine-making skills, has enabled investment and

According to data from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), the UK consumed over 1.7 billion bottles in 2020 – making us the fifth largest consumer of wine in the World.

expansion in the wine industry. There are over 880 commercial vineyards and 195 vineries across England and Wales up from 432 and 128 respectively 10 years ago. Grapevine plantings, over 98% of which are in England, have more than doubled in the past eight years, with a 70% increase in the last five years alone. According to Wines of Great Britain, the industry’s organising body, 8.7 million vines were planted in English and Welsh soil between 2017 and 2021. A record 3.2 million vines were planted in 2019 alone. Acreage has tripled since 2000, with over 9500 acres (3844 ha) now under vine in Great Britain. A further 2 million vines are thought to have been planted this year, confirming the UK wine industry as one of the fastestgrowing agricultural sectors in the UK. With around 70,000 acres of land that is suitable for wine production, there is room for considerable expansion!

Wine makers believe a changing climate is a major factor in improving quality of the harvest. They believe, that after many years of making acclaimed sparkling and white wines, recent successes with using the Pinot Noir grape are opening up new horizons. The variety is notoriously difficult to grow due to requiring weather condition within a very thin band of conditions. Too cold it doesn’t ripen and too hot it spoils. Harvests are getting earlier with warmer summer nights, as well as days, which allows the grapes to ripen better, with higher sugar levels and lower acidity. The threat of late frost remains, which caused huge damage in 2017, in addition to the worrying variability of weather, with stronger winds and more violent rain.

The majority of British wine regions are located in the South (South East - 75%, South West - 11%, East Anglia - 5%, Wales2%, elsewhere of the country - 7%), where the climate is drier and warmer compared to the rest of the country. With rolling hills and chalky soils, these areas are perfect for producing premium sparkling wine. Many counties in England are experiencing longer, milder summers. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and produce more elegant and complex flavours in the wine. Of the wines produced, 71% are sparkling and 29% are still. Part of English sparkling wine’s attraction, is its close resemblance to Champagne, the vines planted around the South Downs contain a lot of chalk that is nearly identical to France’s Champagne region. It uses the same three grapes — Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier — and the same production method, the “traditional method”. This means the wine undergoes a second fermentation in bottle. The bubbles get trapped, and then the wine has the opportunity to spend some time ageing on the yeast.

Champagne producers proudly point out to the widely held belief that the French monk Dom Perignon invented champagne at the abbey of Hautvillers in 1697. He is reputed to have tasted some wine that had re-fermented in the bottle by accident and was overjoyed at the deliciously sparkling result. He began experimenting until he was able to get wine to ferment in the bottle without exploding. However recent research reveals it was an English doctor in Gloucester, Christopher Merret who presented a paper to the Royal Society in 1662 describing how English cider and winemakers had been adding sugar to give them a refreshing, bubbly quality. What he was describing was the result of secondary fermentation. Allegedly, the French sent spies across the channel to investigate Merret’s methods and they copied his formula.

New detailed research by University of East Anglia (UEA), the London School of Economics, Vinescapes Ltd and Weatherquest Ltd recently published in the journal OENO One reveals how climate change is likely to increase the potential for wine production in the UK—with conditions projected to resemble those in famous growing regions of France and Germany. Significant areas within England and Wales are projected to become warmer by 2040 by up to a further 1.4 degrees C during the growing season. This expands the area of suitability for Pinot Noir for sparkling and still production, but also for growing varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Semillon and more disease-resistant varieties, which are hardly grown in the UK at present. British weather can still be unpredictable, as the 2012 vintage demonstrated when much UK grape production was lost due to the cool and very wet flowering period. Year to year climatic variability will remain, including early season frost risk, even if the longer-term trends are good ones. The rate of production is difficult to predict in Britain’s erratic climate. There were generous yields in 2018 and 2019, with 2020 offering a comparatively modest harvest. In 2021, very wet weather accompanied flowering. Consequently, the industry produced around 2.5 million less bottles than the 10 million bottle average of the three previous years.

In the past 10 years alone, there have been six wine vintages (when there are enough quality grapes from a single year to make a batch of wine), compared with just two in the Noughties.

Sales during the pandemic leapt as people have discovered the wines on their own doorstep, and as online buying has become more mainstream. UK wine has gained traction among domestic consumers for its quality, winning many International awards and is gradually becoming ranked with traditional wine-producing regions, such as France and Italy. At Waitrose, which stocks more than 100 English and Welsh wines, sales rocketed by 46% against 2020 from January to May alone this year. Most experts agree that, whilst English wine faces inevitable growing pains, the industry’s most exciting years are still ahead of it.

This bodes well for the rural economy, as vineyard numbers grow and with it, their workforce. A survey of the UK wine industry predicted the industry will create between 20,000 and 30,000 new jobs over the next 20 years, providing a sizeable boost to the economy. Many wine producers depend heavily on local tourists and farm gate sales. But there are signs that, like the wines themselves, English wine tourism is becoming more sophisticated and helping to drive growth. Not just tours and wine tastings, but many offer authentic on-site accommodation. People are keen to tour vineyards and there are now more than 150 open to the public. Whilst most visitors are currently UK-based (some 86%), there are many opportunities to attract more inbound visits through export activity in key markets. By 2040 wine tourism revenue could reach around £658m or 7.8m visitor nights. There are specialist companies like https://www.englishwineadventures.com or https://www.englishwinetastingtours.co.uk encouraging people to discover England’s blossoming wine region ‘Ideal for individuals, group bookings, corporate events and hen parties’ according to their website.

A knock effect of the growth of the wine industry has been the substantial increase in investing in fine wines. A key attraction of investing in wine is that, unlike shares or buy-to-let properties, investors may not need to pay capital gains tax (CGT) on any realised profits. HM Revenue & Customs considers most wine to be a ‘wasting asset’, in other words, a commodity that has a predictably useful life of less than 50 years. This is despite fine wines often appreciating quite considerably in value within that time. Some other reasons to add wine to an investment portfolio include performance, tangible investment, liquidity and a hedge against inflation. Investing in fine wine is becoming better understood by investors as an important component of a well-balanced and robust portfolio.

This is no longer the sole domain of the wine traders. In recent decades, the investment wine market has become vastly more accessible. The establishment of the London Vintners Exchange (Liv-ex), a global platform for wine trading and indexing, has led to more transparent pricing and information. However, since direct trading on the Liv-ex is only available to professional wine merchants, most private investors purchase their wines directly through distributors, auction houses or the secondary market via fine wine retailers.

Another method is to buy wines En Primeur, or through wine futures, which allow you to invest in wine while it is still in the barrel. You can purchase such futures up to 18 months before the official release of a vintage. However, note

that the value of the wine isn’t guaranteed and may actually decline between the time of purchase and time of sale. For experienced wine collectors, auctions are more than mere opportunities to buy or sell assets, they are a place to come and enjoy the overall atmosphere of fine wine and dining. There is passion behind the act and a thrill associated with the chase.

It is beyond the remit of this article but a guiding principal is to go for quality from a reputable dealer and store the wine correctly. Many of the leading wine merchants have excellent advice, offer cellar storage and buy/sell platforms. Investing in wine provides you with an asset that not only has potential for future growth, but is also tangible in some cases. For the most part, if the price drops or if the performance isn’t what you expected, you can at least drink the wine and derive pleasure.

The old adage used to be “buy three cases, and sell one to pay for the other two”. That can still be true, but not at all levels of investment. To quote our local wine merchants Berry Bros & Rudd “There’s no magic formula for building a fine wine collection. It takes time. Like a painting, it’s created in layers – brushstrokes – some things added, some taken away. But when, at last, you savour a bottle you love at its peak maturity, it is one of life’s great pleasures.”

The country lanes of Kent meander through lavender fields, apple orchards, vineyards and hop fields; such natural features come together to form this rich countryside tapestry commonly dubbed as the Garden of England. Whilst the rural backdrop is renowned for its quintessentially English beauty, the expanding market town of Ashford can be considered a continental gateway, due to the International Passenger Station, the nearby Channel Tunnel Terminal and high-speed commuter service to London. The infrastructure in this part of Kent includes access to both the M20 and M2 motorways, providing fast links to the M25 and channel ports. Sussex and Hampshire benefit from the arguably unbeatable combination of proximity to both the capital and the coast. One can enjoy the delights of the southern shoreline, like the sandy beaches at West Wittering, the chalky cliffs of Beachy Head and the extensive sailing facilities of Chichester Harbour. For sporting enthusiasts, there are international polo events at Cowdray Park in Midhurst, and Goodwood hosts a number of world-renowned motor and horse racing events, including The Festival of Speed and Glorious Goodwood.

A short distance across the Solent is the Isle of Wight, only ninety minutes to London, hosting world-class yachting facilities, stunning coastlines and a great climate, definitely creates an enviable lifestyle.

South West

The West Country has a lot to boast about: 2 National Parks, 14 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 630 miles of coastline. It is a beautiful part of the country steeped in history and is a region of “chalk and cheese”. From the Georgian splendour of Bath to the thatched chocolate box cottages of country villages, these counties ooze charm and tranquility. The countryside is equally varied; the rolling hills of Devon, the geological landforms of the Jurassic coast and the Cornish moorland landscapes are but a few examples of the heterogeneous textures and shapes of the West Country. It has always had a unique food heritage, including the world famous Cornish pasty and a long tradition of producing fine ales and ciders. This honeypot of gastronomic activity continues today through the plethora of restaurants run by renowned chefs and the wonderful ‘off the beaten track’ pubs.

Midlands & North

The Midlands is home to Britain’s first national park, The Peak District National Park, the allure of Derbyshire is rooted in the organic beauty of nature. The varied textures of the wildlife offer not only aesthetic appeal but also provide a playground for recreational activities and adventure sports. This appeal extends to the architectural splendor of the region, where some of the finest Stately Homes, including Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Kedleston and Calke Abbey, supplement their stunning setting. The monumental beauty of the Peak District is such that the heights of its landscape have inspired writers for centuries, from Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte to William Wordsworth and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The North-East of England may boast two of Britain’s favourite market towns (Alnwick and Hexham), together with a thriving and picturesque commercial centre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but in reality the region is Britain’s “best kept secret” Northumberland and Durham offer miles of heritage coastline, Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site and thousands of acres of magnificent countryside. The region enjoys exceptionally good communications with the capital and, being geographically close to the centre of Britain, it also lies within a 2-hour drive of The Lake District, York and Edinburgh.

Eastern

The county of Essex combines the beautiful countryside with convenience; with fantastic commuter links into the City and Crossrail will enhance this further. In addition to the railway connections, the motorways (M25 and M11) and airports complete an excellent transport network. Suffolk and Norfolk are known for the Heritage Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, along with a wealth of historic market towns, peaceful villages and miles of unspoilt coastline. Often referred to as ‘Constable Country’, Dedham Valley in Southern Suffolk has been immortalised in the undulating landscapes captured on canvas by John Constable. As well as being both home and inspiration to Constable, Suffolk is also the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough. Beyond such remarkable connections to British art history, Suffolk’s cultural contribution extends to its ‘thespian talents’; the only surviving Regency playhouse is in Bury St Edmunds. Moreover, as the home of Horseracing, Newmarket adds another layer to Suffolk’s historical distinction.

For generations Cambridge has attracted leading intellects and continues to do so; through the University, the world leading medical research centres and the Science Park. Lincolnshire is the second largest county in England, filled with a full spread of towns and villages offering a diverse range of heritage and culture. From the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral (between 1311 - 1549 it was the tallest building in the world) to the scenic beauty of the Wolds. The much improved train network from Grantham has enhanced the region.

Overseas

For those fortunate people that find it possible to own a property overseas, the reward is incalculable and the only way to fully appreciate the rich and diverse culture of our neighbours abroad. Whether you prefer the finest skiing in the Italian Alps with views to the Matterhorn, or walking through the vines of Tuscany, sipping the odd glass of Chianti, and treading in the steps of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli. Then again, southern France is peppered with wonderful Chateau that provide superb accommodation and that ‘Chic’ charm that only the French possess. Or maybe the Spanish Costas, a must for British homeowners and holidaymakers, enjoying great demand due to its superb climate, 300 plus annual days of sunshine and exceptional value. For me, the Balearic Islands are my favourite, with Mallorca, the largest island in the group, bathed in a rich culture and cuisine, wonderful beaches and a temperate climate, yet providing a diverse range of property from ancient stone ‘Fincas’ to super modern Villas.

Whatever you prefer, we are here to help you find your very own ‘idyll’. The following pages include but a glimpse of such diversity to illustrate the above.

Let us guide you home
