Like many of you, I have been in this industry a long time.

Over this history I have been blessed to work for a variety of organizations, some very large and some smaller. Made mistakes. Learned from them (sometimes painfully). But looking back over the arc of my career, I’m grateful for the exceedingly valuable experience and skills gained that I could not have acquired any other way.

These experiences have shaped me and my values and methods.

A couple of anecdotes to illustrate: At one point early in my career, my job with a large, well-known company was threatened as I was too focused on “building a foundation for future success”, and not enough on “achieving the financial growth objectives – now”. When I explained to the executive team that the only path to aggressive profit increases now was to reduce staff and mortgage the future of the brand, the unblinking blank stare I received in response spoke loudly “…and this is a problem for you?”. In that organization, short-term profitability trumped everything. Yet, outside of such battles, this organization was expert at manufacturing as well as technology development and trained me thoroughly to operate successfully in these arenas.

In another organization, we fell into a monthly rhythm of the ownership putting forward “game changer” ideas that they felt would instantly transform the brand and rocket them to quick success. On one occasion the game changing idea of the month, delivered after careful financial analysis, was that I should fire all the engineers (yep – true story). Needless to say, another conversation about mortgaging the future ensued. Despite the occasional misguided idea, this company was masterful in financial management. The knowledge I gained from working in their organization regarding bank and cash-flow management has been invaluable.

So, what does this have to do with Pursuit of Excellence?

Along the path of over 30 years in our industry I learned how to operate businesses like Symetrix, but perhaps most importantly I learned about myself. I learned that I am a foundation builder (the very thing that nearly got me fired in the past). For me, short-term financial success that mortgages the future is empty — no satisfaction, no success. What I find most rewarding is building strong teams that form high-performance organizations and passionately pursue excellence. I tell every person to whom we offer a job that at Symetrix we have three objectives:

Have fun, pursue excellence, and take care of each other.

What does the pursuit of excellence look like at Symetrix?

We have built out very strong teams in every function of the business and are moving purposefully towards best-in-class performance in each area. Whether that performance is measured in products and technologies, or the varied aspects of business operations, Symetrix is increasingly excellent. No Symlandian (Symetrix teammate) finds any satisfaction in mediocrity.

We are playing the long game, taking the time to build foundations that will deliver excellence across all of Symetrix’s activities far into the future. And, we are having fun doing it together.

CASE STUDY

by Bob Ale-Ebrahim NIS Gazprom Neft, a vertically-integrated energy company in Belgrade, Serbia, uses multiple translators to help translate their meetings into three languages: Serbian, Russian and English and between the two cities of Belgrade and Novi Sad. NIS Gazprom Neft needed to upgrade their system, which meant finding a bridge from their old analog system and integrating it with a new digital audio system solution. They needed the new digital solution in Belgrade, while keeping the old analog system in Novi Sad. AVL Projekt Int Doo was the integrator on the project and teamed up with Symetrix to develop a solution that could bridge the technological divide and translate between languages.

Davor Ugresic, the Systems Integrator at AVL Projekt in Belgrade, Serbia gave Symetrix a call. Davor is their lead technical support engineer. He spoke with Quinn Klarer, Field Application Engineer at Symetrix in May of 2021. The Serbian NIS Gazprom Neft was using a Televic conferencing system and a Symetrix Radius NX to detect what language was being translated to and from their Meeting Room. After reviewing the systems API, Quinn quickly recognized that Symetrix could provide a high-end solution to connect the two locations from analog to digital, while at the same time realizing some process efficiencies.

Fast forward to 2022, when they began working together via remote sessions where Quinn would log in remotely to Davor’s computer while he was onsite at NIS Gazprom Neft with the Televic system and the Radius NX DSP. The Televic system allows the user to switch between three different languages. The language selection signals which language is being used at any given time. Once a selection is made, it sends a signal to the Radius NX. After several remote sessions, Quinn wrote an Intelligent Module using Lua Scripting that would listen or detect the language signal and based on the language selection, turn the logic outputs on and off, essentially like a switch. Using those digital “switches”, Davor connected the switches to physical logic outputs of the Radius NX to change audio routing.

(continued from page 6) Quinn remarked, “It was rewarding to be able to log into someone’s computer across the world and program a custom solution for them. We are in the business of making quality connections around the world.” Now, with the new system, what used to take 6 translators can be accomplished with only 3. Saving time and improving capacity with an improved digital system were just a few of the benefits of the new system. Davor said, “It was a challenging task, but we knew we could do it by using the Symetrix system. We wanted to go analog to digital and use open architecture with Dante. The DSP is the center of the system and that is why we chose Symetrix for its quality, versatility and because it had the flexibility to change things as we needed for this particular application.”

“ When I’m doing an installation with Symetrix, I can hear all the minor adjustments I make ‘real time’. The sound quality is good, the help files are excellent, and the software is advanced. Very little training is needed. You can do really powerful stuff with Symetrix! You can have the confidence that after the installation you don’t have to worry about going back to fix something. The best job is when you don’t have to think about it after the installation.”

AVL Projekt installed a system that was able to serve multiple audio locations on the same call while it was conducting sessions in multiple languages. The sessions are also available via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. The technicians at the Serbian NIS Gazprom Neft have been impressed with both the versatility and sound quality of the system. They are delighted with their ability to control all aspects of their meetings and translations with a simple tablet. Knowing how complex the system is, both they and translators at NIS Gazprom Neft appreciate how much easier it is now to use the system and are very pleased with their ability to switch back and forth between languages.

They now have the assurance that they won’t lose anything during the translation process.

What is the Symetriverse?

Symetrix offers an ever-expanding integrated family of control solutions known as the Symetriverse. The Symetriverse is an audio system that is comprised of DSPs, Control Software, Control Hardware, Design Software, IO Expanders and Accessories.

The Big Bang that started it all happened in 1976 when Dane Butcher began creating audio products out of his recording studio. CASE STUDY

by Bob Ale-Ebrahim Roxy Lanes is a unique entertainment venue featuring both boutique bowling alleys and ballrooms. They have six locations across England that feature games such as shuffleboard, ice-free curling, American pool, air hockey, ping pong and even karaoke. The entertainment they offer appeals to both adults and children. Roxy Lanes serves a variety of beverages, craft ales, cocktails, wine and pizza, and the venue can accommodate up to 150 people. They cater to large parties, small groups, and kid’s birthday parties.

He is usually not far off what I would suggest, so it is a fairly painless design process where I don’t need to worry about convincing the client about proper speaker placement. As many of these projects are large and consist of multiple areas which need audio coverage and all need to be a very similar volume, this usually dictates that what’s required is a well distributed system, where high audio quality is needed, but physical location of the speakers is paramount to enable good time alignment to be achievable and thus make the whole system integrated.”

Pete Rollinson, CEO, Technical Director and Project Manager of Audioserv Ltd., explained how they installed a new audio system at their Leeds location. “As we look after the audio in all of Roxy’s sites, this project was relatively similar to many we have done before. Roxy’s management has some knowledge of sound systems and usually makes suggestions as to where he thinks speaker placement would work for both the venue and customers.

Roxy Leisure is a Leeds, England based company which has grown over the past few years, from one Roxy Ballroom in the center of Leeds, to multiple venues around the UK and they have more that are in the build or planning stages. Roxy Lanes in Leeds opened several years ago, and they began putting bowling lanes into some of their larger new venues and the Leeds site quickly began to be too small. This steered them towards the new site in

the Leeds Light Centre, which has seen the venue size increase massively over the previous building. “This new venue has ten bowling lanes and two ice-free curling lanes as well as live sports shown on big screens. There are two bars on different floors and food is also served in the venue.” stated Pete.

“For this particular system installation we installed two Audac Baso 18’s and four Audac PX115 subs in the upstairs bar, seven Audac Vexo 112’s and two Baso 15 subs for the lanes, three Audac Vexo’s and 1 Baso 15 in the downstairs bar, four Vexo 110’s and one Baso 15 in the pool area, two Audac Vexo 8’s in the kitchen, two Audac Xeno 8’s for the stairs, two Audac Ateo 4’s for the bathrooms, and a Symetrix Prism 12x12 for the DSP and three Powersoft Quattrocanali 4804’s, a Powersoft Quattrocanali 2404 and an Audac Amp20 MK2 to complete the system.”

The Dante networking allows easy expansion of systems should the client require it, through the use of Dante amplifiers or other Dante in/out devices, including adding new inputs after the build has been finished, where getting audio cables would be impossible, but there is a network infrastructure available. As we solely use Symetrix for Roxy, having the same systems in every venue simplifies the complexity of their entire maintenance schedule and simplifies our engineer’s job as they are very familiar with the Prism platform.”

(continued from page 14) Pete expounds on how much he relies on the sound quality, performance, and ease of installation of Symetrix products. “As we use Symetrix DSPs for most of our audio installations, we are well acquainted with Composer software, so designing a system is relatively easy as long as we have an accurate plan of how the client wants the system to function. All of the Symetrix DSPs that we have used sound excellent and with the Solus and Prism ranges, we can design the audio system how it needs to be, rather than using a fixed architecture system and having to design the venue around the DSP. The system achieved the necessary objectives as initially required. Those being good sound quality, even coverage for the whole venue and enough SPL for the venue. The Prism 12x12 is networked into the system on its own V Lan, so the client has control of every area as required.”

When asked if there was anything challenging about the Roxy installation Pete said, “There isn’t anything particularly epic about the audio installation, except that there are multiple areas of time alignment to correctly sum the audio for every listener. Many bar audio systems (as opposed to very high SPL club or live music venue systems) don’t use any time alignment and have speakers thrown in with little regard to timing.”

Audioserv has grown over the last seventeen years from one guy with a PA system, to a team of audio and lighting engineers and venue installation specialists. Even through the pandemic, they were hard at work installing audio systems for their clients when it was deemed safe to do so. As Pete explained, “Over the years, specifying the right kit for an audio install has become an enjoyable task, as our portfolio of manufacturers’ accounts has grown. Our specifying process is much the same whether it is a small bar, or a large music venue to find out what the client wants their system to achieve and give them at least two options which will fulfill their requirements.”

Audioserv has developed a tried-and-true process for repeatable system design using Symetrix’s flexible DSP options.

“ The basis of any system we install is about speaker type and placement. This will always dictate how many amplifier channels are required and from there, we know which DSP unit to spec. With Symetrix’s Prism range, we always have the option of further development of the system using Dante audio networking, should the client decide to increase the complexity of the project after the initial spec.”

Vincent Dungan Controller Background Vincent Dungan, Symetrix’s new Controller, grew up in western North Carolina with a love for sports, math, and foreign languages. As a die-hard Tar Heel fan, he attended the only college he applied to – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Vincent started off majoring in Actuarial Sciences, but eventually switched to International Studies with a focus in economics and financial accounting.

Continuing his interest in languages, Vincent minored in French and Spanish and got the opportunity to study abroad in Sevilla, Spain. Upon graduating from university, Vincent took advantage of a job opportunity located in Shanghai, China. Despite not having ever studied Chinese, Vincent (incorrectly) assumed that having a knack for other foreign languages would help with this endeavor.

Vincent started his career in a treasury role focused on payables and receivables and cash flow forecasting. After five years in China, he moved back to North Carolina to help open the company’s US-based office. At this point, Vincent’s job evolved into a financial controller/VP of finance role. Vincent has had the opportunity to be involved in many parts of a business including finance, operations, sales, customer service, and logistics which has allowed him to contextualize his work in the broader picture of an organization.

Dogs or Cats?

Vincent likes all animals but getting to grow up with a border collie and a Bernese Mountain dog, he loves dogs.

What do I enjoy doing when not working?

When not working or reading financial statements on Yahoo! Finance, Vincent enjoys playing disc golf with his wife, trying a new brewery, or finding a new trail to hike in the Pacific Northwest.

Favorite word?

Vincent’s favorite word in the English language is ‘balance’ for a couple of reasons: 1) he uses it way too much 2) it’s what he strives for most in life.

Advice for any new candidates?

Vincent’s advice for any candidate wanting to join Symetrix’s great team is, “To be yourself. The best way to figure out whether or not you fit in somewhere is to totally be yourself and see how those around you react.”

Corey Frost Senior Full Stack Software Engineer Corey is the new Senior Full Stack Software Engineer at Symetrix and the newest member of our stellar Engineering team.

Background Becoming a software engineer wasn’t something that was even on my radar when I was younger; I was going to be a rock star! I played in a couple of bands during the latter part of the “Hair Metal” era and wrote original songs that were too unpolished to work for that time but may have worked later when “Grunge” became a thing.

I decided the uncertainty of life playing in the local music scene wasn’t all that appealing and fell back on the training I’d received as a drafter. I began working for Viacom maintaining their system of CATV utility maps and shortly thereafter helped them implement a CAD system to replace the paper/mylar maps. It was at this point that I discovered I both liked and was pretty good at writing AutoLISP code to automate tasks in AutoCAD. From there I began writing applications in compiled BASIC to aid in the design of the CATV systems and to make the maps more intelligent. By this point, I was hooked and knew my future was programming.

I continued to work with maps while learning more advanced programming languages and concepts (selftaught and via evening classes), eventually landing my first job as a software engineer working on a desktop replacement app for the now defunct Packard Bell PC company. I spent the next 15 years developing C++ Windows applications for companies both large and small before switching to web development about ten years ago, and most recently, adding mobile development to my bag of skills.

People who have impacted my life path Hands down, this would be my wife. She has been the main force providing the not always subtle pushes I sometimes needed to transition to the next phase of my career.

Honorable mention would be to a development manager at Microsoft who after an embarrassingly bad interview while attempting to land my first job in software development, cleared his afternoon and spent the rest of the day taking my C++ skills to the next level.

Name/nickname My friends and family routinely address me as “Core”, and I’ve been called “Frost” by co-workers and team members. I prefer to just be called by my name, but either of those are fine as well.

Dogs or Cats?

Dogs most definitely! All I have to do is walk to the mailbox and step back inside the front door for my pups to let me know how much I mean to them. It can be excessively long sometimes, but hey…

My favorite quote I have a group of favorites.

What do I enjoy doing when not working?

- Vacationing with my family, especially at Disneyland and Disney World.

- Working on my car or on projects with my son and his cars.

- Home remodeling and repair projects.

- Spending time with my dogs.

- Watching movies and reading.

Volunteering I spend some of my free time repairing cars for friends and family and occasionally someone who is really in need of help. It’s something I’m good at and I have trouble understanding how much these can cost if taken to a shop.

Jebraan Gowani Technical Support Engineer Jebraan Gowani is our new technical support engineer and part of Symetrix’s award-winning technical support team.

Background Jebraan’s role as a student IT Help Desk assistant put him on the IT track, but then he found he liked solving people’s issues in general. This realization led to working in retail at the Microsoft Store. Jebraan was a Product Specialist and then a Service Advisor (taking tech appointments at Microsoft’s equivalent of a Genius Bar).

Then he transitioned to Merchant Support and Fraud Investigation at Amazon, and Product Support with Anker.

Jebraan notes, “Working B2B as Merchant Support was the most rewarding, which is why I wanted to move out of B2C at my last position to Symetrix Technical Support.”

What do I enjoy doing when not working?

Always an avid traveler, Jebraan has had many adventures, including going to Northern Alberta once and Mexico three times in the last year. His international travel goal destinations include South America, Japan, and Australia/New Zealand. Jebraan also enjoys being active and outside when the weather is permitting. “Indoor soccer, flag football, and skiing are my favorite sports to participate in; however, I am usually open to anything.

I also enjoy working out regularly, spending time with friends going to concerts, and watching movies.”

Name/nickname He prefers to go by “Jebraan”, although he doesn’t mind being called “J” by those he works with closely.

My superpower if I was a superhero If Jebraan was a superhero, his superpower would be Telekinesis because not only would he be able to manipulate matter, but he could also fly using his mind.

When he was 5, he was pretty sure he’d be Batman when he grew up.

Dogs or Cats?

Jebraan prefers dogs to cats, “Dogs 100% for their unconditional love. I’m allergic to cats and their affection is very much on their terms.”

Invent a holiday If he could invent a holiday, it would require everyone to travel somewhere foreign and try a new food from a cuisine they are not familiar with.

by Bob Ale-Ebrahim DesignLive Technologies Co., Ltd recently installed a premium AV system built around Symetrix’s Radius NX 12x8 for the Sun Signature Gallery. Located in the township of An Thoi, in Phuc Quoc, Viet Nam, the Sun Group is one of the largest real estate developers in Viet Nam. They developed the Sun Signature entertainment venue, which can accommodate up to 1,000 people, to host live shows, weddings, meetings, conferences, exhibitions, and art performances.

The objective was to create a venue with a high-quality sound system, that is both easy-to-use, and robust enough to meet international design standards to host top-tier events. The installation is a premium, high-end AV system that is capable of supporting different types of art performances, including professional entertainment. At the end of last year, Sun Signature Gallery was the main venue chosen by Sun Group to host large-scale events such as Christmas parties and a spectacular, gala event ushering in the New Year 2022.

We asked Phu Tran Pham, DesignLive Technologies Founder & CEO why they chose Symetrix products for the project. He explained, “First and foremost, we chose Symetrix for the superior quality products that have been built from 40 years of expertise for demanding, live performance applications. The system is flexible to switch on different modes of configurations and compatible to handshake to other sound systems when needed to maximize the system capacity and deliver an impressive audio experience to the audience.”

Symetrix products have flexible configuration and programming options that helped simplify the operations of the multi-purpose ballroom for both conferences and live performances.

Phu added, “We selected Symetrix’s Radius NX because it has redundant Dante network connections for reliable system performance. We also installed a Symetrix 4 channel analog Input Card for the system. We wanted the assurance of quality products that would ensure lasting and stable system operations. We like that Symetrix products give us the ability to fine tune the system. We were able to configure multiple site files for different speaker configurations to give our customer the flexibility to adjust when needed. Our team can remotely control the system if support is needed. The new system requires less manpower to operate and was more cost efficient when all was said and done, making it a win-win for both end-users and our customer.

(continued from page 21) DesignLive worked with Aligned AV Distributors to design the acoustic environment of the space. DesignLive has years of training and support from Aligned AV Distributors, ensuring delivery of a high-end result for the Sun Signature Gallery event space.

The most challenging aspect of this project was the requirement of extremely high-quality audio from the customer. DesignLive worked closely with Aligned AV Distributors and chose Symetrix products because of their proven track record in both audio quality and reliability. For this project, they had to ensure that the system could deliver high-end audio, was easy to use by the end-user, with an integrated control system, and that the customer could utilize different customized profiles depending on the type of event and specifications.

No matter what event has been held at Sun Signature Gallery, the superior audio system has been able to deliver results. The customer has commented numerous times on how easy it is to switch the system settings for all the different events they have hosted in the entertainment venue.

Many manufacturers of audio processors have focused on the corporate/enterprise conferencing space with a belief that audio quality is just not that important for conferencing. Through the Eyes of a Young Professional

by Taylor Stanley It was spring of this year when I first stepped into the Symetrix Headquarters looking for my first “adult” job with childlike optimism. I had made it all the way to my third round of interviews, speaking with CEO and Owner, Mark Graham, when he told me he had a project that he thought I might be a fit for – tradeshow coordination.

I left the office feeling elated at the prospect of getting to see the pockets of the world I had never seen before and getting to meet new people. Nothing was certain of course, I still had to get the job offer, but still I went home glowing with excitement. Maybe it was the unicorns on every member of the sales team’s desk or the freshly painted mural of the Seattle skyline of the wall in the conference room, but I left the offices that day with a gut feeling that my life was about to change.

Spring forward three months, and the time had come for me to attend my first ever tradeshow with Symetrix.

First off, I had absolutely no idea how much work went into creating the tradeshow experience behind the scenes. I had attended conventions with my friends in the past and experienced the magic of walking into a miles long convention center seeing all of the exhibitors in their colorful booths vying for my attention, but could not have attempted to describe how it was all put together. Now, on the other side of this experience, I can tell you: there are hours of meetings, dozens of excel spreadsheets, and buckloads of candy, swag, and other goodies on order.

It is the truest form of collaboration. Every single person on the our team from engineering to finance pitched in to create a final product that we could all be proud of.

In the weeks leading up to the show, I spent a lot of time on the phone with our beloved sales reps and customers who offered me their tidbits of tradeshow advice acquired by years of trial and error. The most common piece of advice I received was about remembering to change my shoes every single day. It seemed silly at the time but, in hindsight, following that advice saved my soles.

I was so excited. There truly is not a better word in the dictionary to encapsulate the joy in my heart when I stepped off the two and a half hour plane ride from Seattle-Tacoma (SEA-TAC) International Airport to Las Vegas. All of the hard work that I and the rest of the SymFamily had put into this project for months was coming to fruition. It was really happening. We were finally at InfoComm week.

But the work didn’t stop upon my arrival in Vegas – it had only just begun – and I was going to need a lot of caffeine to get through the week.

Luckily, we had the foresight to anticipate that our fellow attendees would feel the same way. In the three days that we were at the tradeshow, I served nearly five hundred cups of coffee and had the ability to connect with so many wonderful people – some new to me and others that I had only spoken to as a pen-pal through email. The conversations I had with each and every person were captivating.

Some were new to the industry, like myself, and were experiencing the bustle of tradeshow life for the first time, while others had built themselves solid careers in Pro AV. They had projects that ranged from the homes of the rich and famous to elaborate houses of worship. There was not a single person to whom I spoke who didn’t welcome me into the industry with open arms.

(continued from page 21) All the people with whom I talked on the booth were incredibly excited to see the our newest control solutions – all of which had never seen the tradeshow floor. The slick W-Series remotes in black looked incredible next to the T-10 Glass, showcased in every single one of our demo stations. Our demo teams — composed of our wonder Field Applications Engineers (FAEs) and Sales Team — took the show by storm, showing off the expansion of the Symetriverse with cool confidence.

The set-up of our booth allowed for deep dives into the Symetrix Sandbox, giving our FAE Team the opportunity to show the amount of customization you can get with Symetrix products and discuss fee-based Professional Services that the team now offers.

Off the tradeshow floor, the party didn’t stop. From dinners at the Hard Rock Café to adventures on the Las Vegas Strip, the SymFamily bonded together tighter than ever.

That closeness directly shone through on the booth, where our team was all smiles and laughs, recounting stories from the night before with each other. The creation of memories together during this trip is something I will look at with such fondness as I progress forward in my career. While working on a booth for 8 hours a day is no easy feat, working alongside such good people makes it a lot of fun.

Ever since I returned back to HQ, I have been filled with a new invigoration for my work. Connecting with so many kind faces and conversing with so many interesting people has made my job more meaningful than ever. I can now recall your faces when I talk to you on the phone and my newfound understanding of stories behind your projects that implement our gear has made the impact of what I do at Symetrix so much more clear. It feels cliché to say that the experience changed me, but I came home with such a new outlook that there is no other way to describe it.
