he spirit of Halloween is in the air.

Superheroes, princesses and goblins will unite during the 22nd annual Halloween Hike at Olander Park on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 6 -7 pm.

During the hike, The Olander Park System’s most popular event, children ages 12 and under are invited to collect treats at stations around the lake as storytellers recite friendly tales of the Enchanted Evening. Guests will have the opportunity to take photos with Spiderman, Jasmine and Aladdin from Laurel’s Princess Parties.

All activities are family-friendly and are not intended to scare children. Admission to the hike is a $2 donation for children ages 3 to 12 and free for children ages 2 and under. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Sylvania Area Family Services.

Trick-or-Treaters should plan to arrive no later than 7 pm and must be accompanied by an adult guardian. Park at Tam-OShanter and follow the pumpkins to the

Olander Park main entrance on Sylvania Avenue. The exit will be located at the walk-in gate on Vicksburg Avenue. The event will be held rain or shine.

The Halloween Hike is sponsored by Michael Sarantou and The Home2Home Team and Meijer.

Approximately 100 volunteers are needed for the Halloween Hike. The Olander Park System invites groups such as families, school clubs, scout packs, cheerleading squads, sports teams, civic organizations and community groups to participate by running treat stations. Volunteers must arrive at 5:15 pm and stay until about 7:45 pm. Dress in friendly costumes or group uniforms. SAFS’s 17th annual Ray of Hope honors community leaders

Over the summer, Chelsea Bray, his supervisor at SAFS, nominated him for his hard work and dedication as a volunteer. He started volunteering at SAFS because his sister was also a volunteer. He has been working there for the past two summers and loves the people he works with. ‘This experience has opened me up to members in my community and has caused me to look at how I treat people,’ he said. He plans on attending The University of Toledo next year to major in business.

New Family Series at the Toledo Zoo Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears and never regrets.” Toledo Zoo and the University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum are presenting a new learning opportunity with Authors, Animals and Art, a meet-the-creative series at the Zoo. Grandfather returns home!

On Oct. 1, the grandfather clock that was part of the Cooke household, was returned to the Heritage Center Museum by Darien Conn. Carolyn Enz Kyritz, the great granddaughter of Dr. Uriah Cooke, who lived and worked in what is now the Heritage Center Museum from1897 until 1942, donated the grandfather clock. It is thought that the clock was a wedding gift to Dr. Cooke and his wife who were married in 1897. The clock was passed down to the Cooke’s great granddaughter many years ago and she decided to return it ‘home.’

This photo from the late 1930s shows Marilyn Kuhlman Enz, Dr. and Mrs. Uriah Cooke’s granddaughter. She grew up in this house and graduated from Burnham High School in Sylvania, before attending college at Northwestern.

She married and now resides outside of Chicago. The grandfather clock is in the background.

Celebrity Wait Night to benefit Lourdes Some of Northwest Ohio’s best will serve friends, and family and colleagues at Lourdes University’s annual Celebrity Wait Night on Monday, Oct. 28. The event begins at 6 pm at Real Seafood Company at the Docks in Toledo.

Each year, faculty, staff, alumni and friends gather to celebrate education with proceeds benefiting the Lourdes student scholarship fund. A portion of the proceeds and all gratuities raised will benefit Lourdes University students.

Prizes of the night raffle include a trip for two to Catawba Island, gift certificates to Twin Oast Brewing and Space Cat Cookies.

On Friday, Oct. 18, 20 students from the Toledo Public Schools District will have the chance to learn more about a career in nursing.

The camp will be held from 9 am to 2 pm in St. Joseph’s Hall at Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd. in Sylvania.

High school juniors and seniors will learn first aid techniques, infection control, proper hand washing and have the chance to take vitals and blood pressure. Camp participants will also have the chance to meet current Lourdes nursing students and faculty, be given financial aid resources and learn how to prepare for college and nursing school acceptance.

Created by Facilitator and Recruiter for the Lourdes College of Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant, Nydia Chatman, the purpose of this camp is to prepare current high school

juniors and seniors for the demands of nursing school and provide opportunities for success.

“This camp is not only a great opportunity for high school students to explore a career in nursing, but a chance for our Lourdes Nursing students to give back and use some of the knowledge they’ve gained so far. We are so excited to see this camp develop and grow in the future,” noted Chatman.

New captain first in many ways

The newly appointed Captain Doug Hubaker of the Sylvania Police Department has desired to be a police officer for as long as he can remember. “I went into college for radio and television broadcasting and left after a year to pursue my dream to be in law enforcement,” he recalled. “I’ve been loving the career ever since.” The Captain has been on the job since Sept. 23 of this year, after spending almost 23 years with the Northwood Police Deptartment. as a Sergeant. Prior to that position, he served the Marion Police Deptartment.

Sylvania Police Chief Rick Schnoor created a new position when he restructured the department as a two-captain system. One captain oversees the day-to-day operations and the second, newly hired Capt. Hubaker, is referred to as the Support Systems Captain.

“Basically, I supervise community affairs, SRT (Special Response Team), Honor Guard, and department training,” he stated. “I can’t imagine one captain doing both roles.”

Capt. Hubaker grew up in Toledo and graduated from Whitmer in 1987. He graduated in 1990 from the University of Toledo Police Academy. “I graduated with an associates degree and went back to school to

obtain a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice,” he said. “I was not your traditional student. In 2014 I got a master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Tiffin University.”

The Captain has been on the job less than three weeks and is impressed with the efficiency of the department. “I have found things to be well-structured and well run,” he stated. “It is a professional atmosphere. The folks from the department have been very welcoming to me and make me feel like I have been here for years. I have been a police officer for years but the challenge is learning how to be a police officer in Sylvania and being a leader for the various bureaus I am supervising. I am always up for a challenge and I am really enjoying the experience.”

The Captain would like to build and strengthen the already good working relationship between the Township Police, Sylvania Police and the Sylvania Fire Department. “I would like to develop training to make our three agencies communicate and work together even more efficiently than they are now,” he stated. Another focus of Capt.

Hubaker is to concentrate on developing the younger officers to become trainers and leaders as the department ages. He stated, “I want to make certain there is another generation of officers to fill the shoes of retiring officers.”

Another “first” for the new Captain is having the distinction of being part of the first husband and wife duo working in the same department. “My wife is a dispatcher for Sylvania City Police,” he said. “It is not an issue.

She does her thing and I do mine. The Chief has shielded me from anything my wife does. I will be the last person who will ever have authority over my wife… and that’s a good thing.” Yet another “first” for Capt. Hubaker is being the first command officer that has been hired from the outside.

Once Capt. Hubaker gets established, he looks forward to bringing some fresh ideas from his previous experience in law enforcement. “I am a firearms instructor and in the past have thought outside the box in regards to training,” he said. “My goal is to offer real-life scenarios so that if an officer gets into a gun fight, their training will kick in and keep citizens and themselves safe from harm.”

The Captain enjoys spending time with wife Amanda, even though they have added 40 hours to their time together, daughters Alexandria and Lindsay, and son Zach. He is grateful to Chief Schnoor for his new role of service and looks forward to serving the citizens of Sylvania. “The Chief had some very qualified candidates wanting the job and chose me. I made a promise that I wouldn’t let him down.”

The annual Epworth Arts & Crafts Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 am to 4 pm, is one of the largest and most well attended church bazaars in the area. Over 60 vendors will display their crafts in the expanded Epworth United Methodist Church, located at 4855 W. Central Ave. at Valley View, across from Wildwood Preserve. There is no admission charge, and parking is free.

A wide assortment of unique, hand-crafted items including jewelry, cards, books, photography, serving pieces, soaps and lotions, herbs, flowers, fused and blown glass, wooden toys and bird houses, holiday themed pieces, knitted and sewn items, clothing and accessories will be featured. New vendors are joining regulars, so fresh items and past favorites will be available.

The popular Silent Auction will include many unusual items. The diverse array

includes dinners hosted by church members, gift cards for services and restaurants, themed baskets loaded with specialty items, symphony tickets, books and “Authors Authors” tickets, an opportunity to throw the first pitch at a Mud Hens game, plus hand-crafted items donated by vendors.

The event also includes a huge bake sale and a coffee bar.

The Arts & Crafts Bazaar is an initiative of Epworth’s United Methodist Women to raise funds to support local missions. As in the past, 100 percent of the proceeds from the Bazaar go to support a number of local organizations.

Past recipients include Friendly Center, Beach House, Mildred Bayer Clinic, Feed Your Neighbor, YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter, Monroe Street Neighborhood Center, Team Recovery, Family House, Legal Aid, and Sylvania Area Family Services.

Some are a frightful delight. And then there are others that are just downright creepy, quite possibly requiring a few Jennifer Ruple shots of something devilishly strong to even consider eating.

This Halloween don’t scare your guests with ghoulish fare, treat them to these Grated eats approved for all ages.

Get the party started with a Graveyard Veggie Pizza. It’s chock full of colorful vegetables which lie on a bed of rich and tangy ranch dip.

Wickedly cute Taco Stuffed Jack-o’lanterns are perfect when there’s no time to fix dinner before the kiddos head out for the evening. Assemble them the night before, then pop them in the oven while everyone’s getting into costume.

And finally, Pumpkin Patch Dirt Cups let your guests play with their food and in the dirt.

Graveyard Veggie Pizza

Tip toe through the graveyard at night with this hearty appetizer. It’s filling and can serve a ghostly crowd. The recipe also works well with reduced fat cream cheese and sour cream.

12 servings 1 can Pillsbury Pizza Crust 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened, reserve 2 tablespoons for garnish 1/2 cup sour cream, plus 1 Taco Stuffed tablespoon for garnish Jack-o’-lanterns 1 envelope creamy dill ranch dip mix 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1 cup shredded carrots 1 cup broccoli, chopped 1 cup cauliflower, chopped 1 jar pimientos, drained 4-ounce can black olives, drained Crackers for garnish

4 servings 4 orange bell peppers 1 pound ground round 1/4 cup red onion, diced 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 - 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup cooked brown rice 15-ounce can black beans 1 tablespoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon cumin 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend Heat oven to 350 F. Wash peppers. Slice off the tops and set them aside. Scoop out seeds and ribs. With a paring knife, carve jack-o’-lantern faces into the sides of peppers. Set aside.

In a large skillet, cook beef and onions until beef is no longer pink. Drain.

In the same skillet, heat oil over medium and cook garlic 1 to 2 minutes. Return beef mixture to skillet. Stir in cooked rice, drained black beans, chile powder, cumin, salt and pepper. Sprinkle cheese over mixture and fold in.

Fill carved peppers with beef mixture.

Place tops back on.

Place peppers, standing up in a glass baking dish. Add a 1/2 cup of water to the dish. Bake for 20 minutes or until peppers are soft.

Pumpkin Patch Dirt Cups Layers of rich chocolate pudding and Oreo crumbs are combined and presented in single-serving cups. They’re a perfect party finale.

8 servings 1 family size box instant chocolate pudding 3 cups milk 1 package Oreos Pumpkin candies 8 clear cups Prepare the pudding according to package directions.

In a food processer, process the Oreos until smooth.

In each cup, layer Oreo crumbs and chocolate pudding. Repeat.

Top with three pumpkin candies.

Annual Fall Festival is a family-friendly fun event The Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce presents the 34th annual Sylvania Fall Festival sponsored by Cooper-Smith and Dave White Chevrolet on Sunday, Oct. 20 from 10 am to 4 pm in Historic Downtown Sylvania.

This year’s event is will feature 45 craft and farmers market-style booths, 10 food trucks, a Family Fun Zone full of free kids activities, including bounce houses, face painting, cornhole, and more. There will also be free train rides, pony rides, a complimentary Pumpkin Patch and Pumpkin Painting Station, live entertainment, a pie baking contest, and the annual parade from 1 to 2 pm along Main Street.

New this year, a complimentary shuttle service has been added to the event to ease parking woes. Event-goers can park on the campus of Flower Hospital and a trolley will shuttle people into downtown Sylvania, operating on a consistent pick-up and dropoff loop. The trolley will run from 9 am to 5 pm.

The Sylvania Fall Festival will also feature “Trick or Treat on Main Street.” Beginning at 10 am kids in costume can Trick or Treat and receive candy from booth vendors and downtown shop owners and staff members along Main Street. There will also be a Donut Eating Challenge between Northview High School and Southview High School students and Police and Fire Departments, and a Dino Dash – including an adult and kids race down

Little Miracles Montessori School expands to second building “Where there is love, miracles happen.”

Donna Riesen and her Little Miracles Montessori School staff are beyond excited to have their second facility built and open for the children who attend their school. “Over the past four years, we had outgrown our building,” Riesen noted. “This new building got its start with a conversation with Fr. Ayman Kfouf of St Elias. It was he who had suggested we move to the building the church owned four years ago. St. Elias had this pavilion building they were looking to re-purpose. We were looking for an opportunity to expand and when he understood our need for more space, he suggested the church build this second building,” she continued. According to Riesen, the church actually owns both buildings and leases the property to her for her school.

programs offered by the school. All of the rooms are equipped with age-appropriate furnishings and Montessori learning tools.

There’s also a large activity room complete with an oversized swing and other childpleasing and educational equipment.

“This is such a blessing,” Riesen offered.

“We started this school in one room in a little school house on Yankee Road 21 years ago,” she recalled. “And this success is thanks to my wonderful staff, the support of my husband Kent Riesen, my children Tristin, Katie and Tedmund Schroyer and my parents Ken and Jan Hall for all the support they have given to me over the years. But most important, is the confidence, faith and trust so many parents have had to entrust their children with us and to realize the value of the program we offer for their children,” she reflected.

With the new building, older children are exposed to the Montessori-style of learning on an individual basis yet they can be grouped with children of similar ages.

“We develop an individualized learning plan for each child,” Riesen pointed out. “We look at where each child is developmentally and follow that assessment to develop their plan,” she said.

Children in the pre kindergarten program have experiences similar to those they will have once they enter school. “We realized there was a great need to prepare children for Sylvania Schools,” she said.

In addition to well-equipped classrooms, easily accessible lockers, and large indoor play areas, Riesen and her staff have created a large fenced outdoor play area where children spend at least one hour every day weather permitting.

Riesen plans to add a bike path around the 50foot by 80-foot playground in the near future.

A traditional teacher, Riesen added Montessori certification to her credentials and started Little Miracles Montessori Preschool and Daycare over 15 years ago. Her daughter had to have four open heart surgeries before she was 2 years old. "That process helped me to see that she needed quality educational care, which motivated me to become Montessori certified and start my own school. That way, I could stay with my daughter and help her and others," she offered.

Little Miracles extended-day and kindergarten-prep programs are offered at the St. Stephen Lutheran Church, which was opened eight years ago.

New business: Salon Rae opens in Saxon Square Hair stylist Carly Bunde is realizing her dream. “I have always wanted a salon of my own,” she recalled. That dream was realized when she opened Salon Rae at 6600 Sylvania Ave. in Saxon Square in mid September.

Once Bunde made this decision, she worked with Megan Malczewski, CCIM of Signature Associates, who negotiated the lease for the 1,500-square-foot space with a representative from Tolson Enterprises, the center owner. “Megan and the Tolson group representatives were wonderful to work with,” Bunde offered.

“This is a great place for us to be and it is just the right size for us. This is a highly

visible location on a very busy street. There is convenient parking for our clients and this is easily accessible,” Bunde added.

The new salon has been finished in an upscale, urban decor. Seven hair stations and a nail station have been built to accommodate the stylists, Bunde anticipates joining her team. The black and white decor sets the tone for the salon, creating the clean and simple environment Bunde wanted. A large table occupies the middle of the room, which has become a gathering space for clients. “We also use the table for our team meetings,” Bunde noted.

extension room were constructed in the rear of the salon. “The color room also serves as a place where stylists can keep their supplies in individual lockers,” she said. “Our nail tech, Cecelia Cordray, is also certified to do eyelash extensions and is thrilled to have her own space,” Bunde stated.

According to Cordray, adding eyelash extensions requires attaching synthetic lashes to each eyelash one by one. The procedure requires approximately two hours to complete so a private area is important.

But, once the procedure is complete, it is permanent.

While Cordray is an experienced eyelash extension technician, Bunde and the stylists who have been at the salon since opening, Kayla Keeling, Kelly Kaiser and Abby Sahloff

are all experienced and certified to offer the latest hair extension techniques. “We hand tie hairs to our clients’ individual hairs.

These procedures offer those with very thin or thinning hair a much fuller look. It gives people who have issues the hair that they have never been able to have,” Bunde reported. “While we all offer a traditional hair services, adding extensions is so rewarding. And it gives our clients so much joy.”

The Tyo Team has compiled impressive sales record According to The Toledo Regional Association of Realtors, the Tyo-Mathias Team of RE/MAX Preferred Associates has compiled an impressive 15-year sales volume record of $271 million, compared to the next highest team total of $197 million for that time period.

Sylvania resident Lance Tyo, with over 40 years in the industry, credits this success primarily to his team of specialists. Laura Harrison, executive director of the Selene Center The Selene Center launched its programs for women affected by domestic abuse in October, coinciding with Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The programs offered will provide safety, healing, and justice for victims of domestic abuse in rural and suburban areas, with a focus on Sylvania and the surrounding communities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Between Sylvania Township and the city of Sylvania there are an average of 224 domestic violence or domestic dispute calls made per year. That is one call every 39 hours,â&#x20AC;? stated Laura Harrison, Executive Director of the Selene Center.

Harrison started the organization after a close friend was unable to access services that she needed after her husband was convicted of felonious assault against her.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started to realize there were some pretty significant barriers for women in suburban and rural areas in accessing domestic violence services, and at that point I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t consider it a choice, it was something I felt I had to help address,â&#x20AC;? Laura said. The Selene Center office is located at 5658 Main St. in Downtown Sylvania.

Women will be assisted with safety planning, court escorts, group therapy, danger assessments, and self-esteem building. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to be there to encourage and support women on their path to healing from an abusive relationship. We are a young startup so we are focussed on doing the most we can with a limited budget and resources,â&#x20AC;? said Harrison.

Toledo Museum of Art will celebrate Halloween with the first of four films in its Sounds of Silents film series and a limited run of after-hours flashlight tours. The Sound of Silents film series begins with “The Phantom of the Opera,” (1925), which will be shown in the Peristyle on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7 pm.

“The frights don’t stop on Halloween,” said Scott Boberg, manager of programs and audience engagement. “The Toledo Museum of Art will have a double feature on Friday evening and a matinee on Saturday afternoon, and those three films will also be accompanied

by Stephen Warner playing on the Skinner organ.”

At 7 pm, Friday, Nov. 1, the Museum will screen “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” (1920) which jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. Director Robert Wiene and a visionary team of designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community.

At 9 pm, Friday, Nov. 1, the Museum will screen “Haxan” (1922), sometimes referred to as Witchcraft through the Ages. Benjamin Christensen’s legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages

suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-thecentury psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious—instead it’s a witches’ brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous.

Friday’s double feature allows visitors to see both films for the price of one.

The weekend film series will conclude Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2 pm with the showing of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” (1920). Tickets are $5 for Museum members, $7 for nonmembers, and $4 for students and military. Visit tickets.toledomuseum.org or call 419-255-8000 to purchase tickets.

Trick-or-Treat at the Toledo Zoo When witches go riding and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, tis near Halloween! Halloween fun at the Toledo Zoo starts on Thusday, Oct. 17, with the first day of Little Boo presented by Meijer. This two-day event gives the pre-school dinosaurs and doctors a chance to delight without the fright.

Toddlers and pre-school aged children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes, trick-or-treat throughout the historic side of Zoo and enjoy crafts, puppet shows, photo opportunities, strolling magic and free games sized just for them. The festivities run from 10 am to 3 pm on Thursday, Oct. 17, and Friday, Oct. 18.

The Halloween spirit is in full “force” for Pumpkin Path presented by the University of Toledo Medical Center and supported by Buckeye Broadband on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20. This event, in its 35th year, runs from 10 am to 4 pm both days. In addition to costumed trick-or-treating for all ages throughout the entire Zoo, there will be games, pumpkin carving demonstrations, bounce houses and magic shows to entertain all the witches and werewolves. Featured again this year, is a free photo opportunity with characters from “A Galaxy Far Far Away" compliments of the Apollo Base and Ohio Garrison.

Halloween Party with a Purpose

Heart & Soul: Caring for our Community is having its 16th Annual Benefit to raise awareness of mental illness and help erase the stigma associated with it on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 6:30-10 pm in The Roost at Hensville at Fifth Third Field. Admission is $40 per person in advance and $50 at the door. Cost includes dinner, live entertainment and free parking.

Entertainment includes Ramona Collins and the band Distant Cousinz. A silent auction will take place, along with a live auction by Karen Rose.

Trick-or-Treat is just around the corner and the Sylvania Police Division wants the Sylvania Community to keep in mind the following safety tips for the kiddos: • Make sure your trick or treaters go in groups, not alone.

• Always walk on the sidewalk, not on the street. Avoid cutting through backyards.

• If they bring a cell phone, make sure they are not looking at them when they cross the street!

• Before crossing the street, STOP, LOOK BOTH WAYS & LISTEN for oncoming traffic.

Then WALK across the street once it is clear.

• Bring a flashlight or wear reflective clothing in case it gets dark.

• Only visit familiar, well-lit homes with porch lights on. Do not enter a home unless it’s with a trusted adult, not even into the foyer.

• Encourage the kids to avoid masks which may obstruct their vision. Instead, use bright colored face paint that has been previously tested to make sure no reactions occur.

• Make sure costumes fit to avoid being a trip hazard. Also, double tie shoelaces.

• Toy weapons should be paper or cardboard. Avoid replica toy guns as they may

be mistaken for the real thing!

• Don’t eat treats until they are first inspected by a responsible adult. Throw away any homemade treats from strangers.

Trick-or-Treat is being held on Oct. 31 at 6 pm to 7:30 pm in Sylvania. If you plan on driving in the neighborhoods during that time, please drive BELOW the posted speed limit.

Put the cell phones down and look out for children who may not be looking for you.

Also, be extra careful if you are entering or exiting a driveway. Sylvania Police Division will have extra patrols in the neighborhoods to help keep everyone safe.

Designer Purse Bingo to support services for visually Impaired The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio and the Sylvania Lions Club are presenting Purse Bingo, an exciting new fundraiser to support services for people in Northwest Ohio who are blind or visually impaired.

The inaugural Purse Bingo event will take place at 6 pm on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Sylvania Elks Lodge, 3520 N. Holland Sylvania Ave. Guests are invited to play 20 games of Bingo in an attempt to win one of 20 purses by famous designers including Kate Spade, Dooney and Bourke, Coach, Michael Kors and more.

Additional books of 20 games of Bingo can be

purchased for $5.

NV Engineering Team selected to participate in NASA student launch projects The Sylvania Northview Engineering team’s proposal has been selected by NASA for the 2019-2020 NASA Student Launch project. The ten-member team of juniors and seniors will participate in a series of design reviews with NASA before the launch in Huntsville, Alabama in April. The team is led by Northview Engineering teacher, Ryan Reed.

In the notice from NASA, Fred Kepner, NASA Student Launch Project Coordinator/Education Specialist stated, “You have successfully completed the first step towards launching your rocket and payload in Huntsville next April! We look forward to seeing your progress through the project milestones over the next 7 months.”

Northview student receives DAR community service award The Fort Industry Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution awarded the 2019 Community Service Award to Elle Rhee, a junior Northview at High School. The DAR Community Service Award is a national level award and is presented to a member of the community for outstanding voluntary achievements. Earlier in the summer, the local Fort Industry Chapter submitted Rhee’s name to the Ohio DAR state chairman. Letters of recommendation and supporting press articles completed the process. The recommendation was then approved by the national chairman.

Elle Rhee is a dynamic and caring student at

Northview High School. She has formed a nonprofit called “Spectacles for Students,” the purpose of which is to raise money to help children whose families cannot afford glasses.

She has contacted the principals of local elementary schools to help identify deserving children and has also arranged with local eyeware shops for donations of frames and lenses. Her father is an ophthalmologist, and Elle has arranged for a monetary donation to be made to Spectacles for Students every time her father’s practice orders lenses from a particular lens grinder. She is currently producing a website and solicitation letters to help with fundraising in order for more deserving children to receive free eyeglasses.

Rhee has been functionally blind for many years, but can have a normal life because her family can afford to purchase the necessary eyeglasses. However, she realizes that many children are not so fortunate, and for this reason she has formed Spectacles for Students.

Robot season is off to a great start at the Sylvania STEM Center. There are kids working to better the community, kids building and programming vacuum material handlers, kids developing business plans to support their team and kids that have never invented or built or organized anything but are willing to learn.

There are 262 kids on the STEM Center robotics teams this year, a 10 percent increase in participants from last year. Of that, 40 percent of the middle school and high school teams are girls. Last season STEM had three teams compete at the FIRST World Championship.

These accomplishments could not happen without community support. SSC was built by and continues to run with volunteers.

Volunteer opportunities include judging at

tournaments, 6-8 hours on a Saturday, mentoring middle and high school teams, hours vary, may be technical or administrative, general office help, emails, grant writing, help with program administration, sorting, yes, LEGO sorting, LEGO building for tournaments, staff outreach events, outreach coordinator and volunteer organizer.

Owen Robinson is a four-year member of the Southview Band.

He has demonstrated leadership and great musicianship. Owen is only one of two students in the state of Ohio to play tenor saxophone at OMEA All-State Jazz Band as well as being selected First Chair alto saxophone for OMEA Districts, First Chair Baritone Saxophone for OMEA Districts and Principal clarinet of the TSYO Symphonic Orchestra. He is the winner of the Toledo Symphony League annual Young Artist Competition. Owen is currently both a squad and section leader in the Southview Band. Outside band, he is involved in SV National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honors Society. His goal is to become a music professor. Owen is the son of Kathryn and Steven Robinson.

Senior Captain Lauren Loss has played varsity tennis the last four years for the LadyKat Tennis Program. She captured the third singles crown at the NLL Championships, leading Northview to a third place finish in the league. Lauren’s record this fall includes 13 wins with 1 loss at 2nd and 3rd singles. At 1st doubles with Brynn Chaffee, she is 10 - 1, winning the Ottawa Hills Invitational, Michaels Doubles Invitational and Perkins Pirate Invitational. In addition to being a leader on the court, Lauren is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government, Interact and Drumline.

Cooper Grill led the varsity Cougars golf team this year with a scoring average of 39.25 in Northern Lakes League matches.

He also led the team by amassing 56 league points. In the NLL Championship at Eagles’ Landing, Cooper's score of 75 tied for 6th place in the league which qualifies him for 1st Team All NLL Honors. Coach Newnham commented, "Cooper is at the top of his game right now. He is a very smart player who has a very high ceiling. It is a pleasure to coach Cooper and I look forward to his junior and senior seasons." Cooper was also on the freshman basketball team and maintains a 3.5 GPA.

The Northview Athletic Booster Club will host its annual reverse raffle sports benefit in the Franciscan Center Nov. 16, 6 to11 pm.

For decades Sylvania and neighboring residents have come together during this annual event to raise money towards athletic programs. “Our booster club’s mission is to support the Northview Athletic Department and our athletes in the best manner possible, promoting sportsmanship and sound moral objectives,” said Jill Tiell, chair of the event.

“We help our athletes by providing additional athletic gear, uniforms and other necessary materials for all our sports teams.”

The fall Sports Benefit is the organization’s

largest fundraising event and consistently draws in crowds of over 400 people who join together that evening for dinner, drinks, music, prizes, a silent and live auction, and a chance to win a $5,000 grand prize. This is the fifth year the event is being hosted at Lourdes University.

In addition to the annual sports benefit, the Athletic Boosters also sell spirit wear, 50/50 tickets and host a spring golf outing.

2019 Leaf Collection

Autumn has arrived and once again the leaves are changing color and blanketing the yards and gardens of Sylvania. Did you know that for a leaf to turn the color red Craig Stough before it falls it needs light? If the leaf is blocked from light over any part of the leaf before it turns red, that part will turn yellow instead.

Leaf collection is a very big job in the city of Sylvania, and is a city service used by many of our residents. I remember leaves were burned by most people when I was a child,

TOWNSHIP TOPICS 911 Vote

Sylvania Township trustees have voted in favor of a consolidation plan for all 911 dispatching services in Lucas County. The 2-1 vote makes it likely that the proposal from the county commissioners will go into effect and will result in the end of the current six dispatching centers, including Sylvania Township, in the county. Chairman John Crandall, who cast the dissenting vote, said that he generally favors consolidation, but thinks the restructuring of the system should involve two centers as opposed to the current proposal of one center for the county.

Trustees also voted for John Jennewine to be the township representative to the 911 planning committee. In addition to Jennewine, as representative of the county’s largest township, there will be a representative from Toledo, the largest city, and a representative from the county commissioners.

There also will be one for all of the other townships in the county and one representing all other municipalities.

The final determination on consolidation will come from a vote of that five-member board.

Although only a few other governmental bodies have made a decision, Toledo and Lucas County have indicated they favor the change and now with Sylvania Township’s vote the change seems set. The planning committee will have about 18 months to determine the exact shape of the new county-wide dispatching service and put it into effect.

That structure was one of the reasons Neal Mahoney, trustee, gave as a reason for his vote in favor. He said he recently went to a meeting of township dispatchers and that he recognizes that this will be a disruption for them.

Nevertheless, it is happening in many Ohio agencies and, in the current situation, Sylvania Township, “will have a seat at the table,” when decisions are made about the service.

Jennewine added that changes in the future in terms of dispatching will likely involve technology and that will involve a greater expense. He added that could pose a problem for the township, particularly if it continues to lose tax revenue through annexation efforts by the city of Sylvania.

Prior to the vote, a number of people spoke against consolidation, citing the large call volume dispatchers will face and the loss of community knowledge that local dispatchers have. It was also suggested that a large disaster would flood the single dispatching center with calls and others with localized emergencies would not be able to reach a dispatcher.

In response to that issue, Jennewine asked what would happen to Sylvania Township

and the smoke and smell were an ever present part of the fall. But leaf burning is no longer permitted due to air quality and fire safety concerns.

Our “City of Trees” lives up to its namesake by having tens of thousands of trees throughout the community. Approximately 7,700 street trees are growing in street rightof-ways alone, with many thousands more in parks and on private lands, including the towering oaks and maples native to the area.

Last year, city crews spent 3,467 hours and drove 6,402 miles loading and hauling 11,928 cubic yards of leaves to the City composting field on Yankee Road north of town. There the leaves and green yard waste are ground and composted into wind rows. The wind rows are turned each year, and the composting process takes about three years to turn the materials into Sylvan-Gro, a rich compost the city sells by the bushel.

This year’s leaf collection begins the week of October 21, starting with one or two Streets Division collection crews as needed, following predetermined routes through the City. As more leaves are raked to the curb, two additional crews will be added and will work full time at leaf collection. In an effort to speed up leaf collection, temporary workers are used and overtime is offered to City workers in the Forestry and Streets Divisions when needed.

The city crews load leaves raked to the curb into leaf boxes mounted on city dump trucks using diesel powered leaf loader vacuum units. Sticks, grass clippings, flowers, plants, etc. can clog or even break the leaf loaders and are not to be part of the leaf collection process. Those items should be set out separately for regular pick-up by the Green Recycling program of the Forestry Division.

scheduled for Oct. 28 to Nov. 8 on your regular Green Recycling pick-up day.

Please do not pile leaves into the street – keep them on the grassy area next to the curb or pavement edge. Every year I see leaves piled way beyond the curb causing some streets to become dangerously narrow, and sometimes forming dams that block storm drainage and cause flooding. The leaves can also clog catch basins and storm drains.

City crews will move as quickly as possible to collect all the leaves. The crews will make multiple sweeps through the city, six rounds last year. If we have good weather, the leaves fall on schedule, and it doesn't snow too much, the leaf collection will be completed by Dec. 6. But the weather and the trees don’t always cooperate. Thanks for your patience!

dispatchers if that large disaster occurred locally, suggesting that the larger compliment of dispatchers at a single location would be more able to handle a major disaster.

James Crosby, a candidate for trustee, said he was leery about why the issue of consolidation was, “on a fast track, for whatever reason.”

In their remarks, trustees praised the work of dispatchers as well as all members of the police and fire departments. It has been stressed that no currently employed dispatchers will loss their jobs.

Proponents of a county-wide dispatch center argue that it will be more efficient and less expensive. It also has been noted that this will be an independent agency and not under the county commissioners.

Locate a property and call the township leafcollection hotline at 419-517-1620. A recording, updated daily, will inform residents where collection has taken place and where crews are expected to be working next.

Rob Nash, manager of the road department, said a strict schedule is difficult to maintain because when the most leaves will fall can’t be predicted with much accuracy and because rain and snow can delay efforts to pick up the leaves. “Collecting a pile of dry leaves is a lot easier than when that pile is soggy with rain, and sometimes frozen in places,” he said.

Some property owners have begun to make the chore a little easier on township crews by using a mulching mower and simply mowing over the fallen leaves to provide nutrients to their lawns over the winter. Several studies have found it is a beneficial way of dealing with fallen leaves as well as providing lawn enrichment.

Leaves cleared from the yard should be placed alongside, but not in the roadway.

Much of the collecting is done using large vacuums which can be fouled if sticks, garden waste or other matter is in the leaf pile. The road department asks that you not use plastic bags and be sure the leaf pile does not include anything but leaves

to the west.

Greg Arnold, an attorney representing the church, told board members that the church should not create any traffic issues because any increase will be limited to Sunday mornings when the schools will not be in session. He added that the structure will be designed to be harmonious with its surroundings and there will be ample use of mounding and landscaping to help it blend in. Access to the 15-acre site will be from two points on Michaw.

In addition to the church, plans indicate a recreation field along Holt Road, a playground and a picnic pavilion at the rear of the property.

Arnold said the church has been at its present location, 4765 McCord Rd., for about 50 years and has outgrown the space available for expansion.

Volunteers needed

Sylvania Township trustees are seeking volunteers for appointments to governmental bodies, which will have scheduled vacancies at the first of the new year. There will be an opening for appointment to the Zoning Commission, which will begin Jan. 1, 2020 and expire Dec. 31, 2024.

There is also a position available for appointment to the Board of Zoning Appeals.

That is also a five-year appointment from Jan. 1, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2024.

There is an opening for an alternate member to the Zoning Commission, and two openings for alternates to the Board of Zoning Appeals. These are one-year terms commencing on January 1, 2020 and expiring on December 31, 2020.

In addition, there will be an opening on the Sylvania Area Arts Commission. The appointment is for one year, running from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020.

An appointment will also be made to the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District. That three-year term will begin Jan. 1, 2020 and expire Dec. 31, 2022.

Those interested must be residents of Sylvania Township and have applications submitted no later than Dec. 2. Applications are available and must be submitted to s y l v a n i at ow n s h i p. c o m / c o m mu n i t y application/.

Conditional use permit granted

The Sylvania Board of Zoning Appeals has granted a conditional use permit for the construction of a church at Mitchaw and Holt roads. The applicant, McCord Road Christian Church, noted in its application that it currently has about 900 parishioners, and conducts four Sunday services to accommodate them. The proposed church will have space for up to 1,500 parishioners.

Annexation request

Lucas County commissioners will meet Oct. 29 to determine whether to approve an annexation request by the city of Sylvania for 33 parcels of residential property currently in Sylvania Township. The annexation issue was resisted by several residents after Sylvania sent letters to 105 properties telling the owners they were required to sign a petition to be annexed.

The city contended that residents signed a document saying they would not resist annexation when those residents signed up for water service, or previous owners had signed such a document and it was still in force.

Residents criticized the action at Sylvania city council meetings and at meetings of the Sylvania Township trustees. Trustees have hired an attorney to aid property owners in fighting the move. The letters from the city went to properties in subdivisions including The Meadows, Parklands and Country Walk.

County Commissioners will hear the annexation issue at 2 p.m. in the commissioners hearing room in Government Center, Jackson Street between Erie and Huron streets.

Leaf pickup

Although the leaves have not yet begun their annual cascade in Sylvania Township, road department crews have tested and prepared the necessary equipment to start the annual collection process, which will begin Oct. 21.

Leaf collection will continue until the township completes its last cycle beginning Dec. 1. Each cycle through the 174 miles of roadway takes about 17 days.

Residents again this year will be able to track progress by going to the road department on the township website. There, interested parties can find a township map divided into 23 grids.

Sylvania–Then and Now

It was in 1883 that a longtime Sylvania Township farmer named John Printup and his wife, Caroline, (Carrie) Cassady Printup, purchased acreage on the north side of Erie Street, just west of the railroad tracks. At the time of this purchase their land included all the property that is today both sides of Woodrow Drive and north to what is Memorial Field today. By 1887 they constructed our subject house, next to the railroad tracks, and retired from the life of

John and Caroline Printup in 1920 farming over 300 acres at the corners of Erie Street and Little Road John and Caroline were married in 1858 and had seven children while living on the farm in Sylvania Township, two of whom died in infancy. Then when his father, Andrew Printup, passed away he inherited over 200 additional acres. When they sold this farmland and “moved to the village” to retire they sold it all, including the original homestead of his father, where they had been living.

John Printup, while farming all his land, was elected to many different positions over his years living in Sylvania, including Sylvania Township Trustee, Sylvania Township Clerk, Township Assessor, and for most of those years serving on the Sylvania School Board.

His name is mentioned in every aspect of Sylvania’s government.

John and Caroline are found living in the Erie Street home starting in 1887, and they are listed living here in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. In the 1920 census John is listed as 84 years old, and Caroline is listed as 82 years old.

Caroline died in 1922 and John died in

1924. Their land on Erie Street, west of the railroad tracks, had been subdivided into the Printup subdivision, with 31 lots, and that is when Printup Drive was established. It was later changed to Woodrow Drive for some unknown reason. This property and home became Lot No. 1 in the Printup subdivision.

The owners of this home over the years are recorded as follows: 1883 – John and Caroline Printup 1925 – Lillian N. Lathrop and LaVerne Clarke (daughters of John and Caroline Printup) 1926 – George C. and Alice M. Saylor 1937 – Elva K. Miles 1944 – Cleo L. Rasmussen 1961 – Robert M. and Shirley M. Currier 1979 – Shirley M. Currier 1993 – Shirley M. Currier, Trust 2019 – Estate of Shirley Currier In checking all the available directories, it appears that each of the owners lived in the home while they owned it.

In 1961 Robert and Shirley Currier purchased the home. They lived there until he died in 1991 and then she continued to live there until she died in 2018. You may remember Bob Currier working for the city of Sylvania in the road department for 30 years before retiring in 1986.

If you are a long-time resident of Sylvania you will remember that in June of 1968, two men working for the city of Sylvania were laying drainage pipe for the swimming pool that was being re-built in Burnham Park, when a wall of dirt caved in on them. One man, William Plummer, was killed in the incident by being completely buried in the dirt. The second man, Robert Currier, was buried up to his arms. Emergency crews were able to save Currier’s life before the rest of the wall caved in, but Plummer will be forever memorialized in Sylvania’s history when the city officials named this pool after him, “Plummer Pool.”

Records show that in August of 1969 the Curriers received a building permit to build a two-car detached garage on the property, but first a permit was issued to allow the Sylvania Township Fire Department to burn down the old garage on the property for a training practice. In July of 1973 a building permit was issued to add a 15.5-foot by 27-foot addition for a family room and half bath on the back of the home.

What I remember about the Curriers is their children, Max, Robin and Sarah, who were friends of ours. For several years I helped Mr. and Mrs. Currier deliver those big Toledo area telephone books that you used to get from the telephone company. Remember?

what’s after windows 10?

According to reports, Windows 10 will probably be the name of the operating system for significantly longer than the typical Janis Weber three-year cycle, from say Windows 7 to Windows 8 for example. That means in 2020 we could still be calling it Windows 10, and after awhile it may just be referred to as simply Windows, with each monthly update having its own name or version number, and the company may adopt nicknames or monikers for the larger updates, similar to how Android has used dessert/candy-themed names for each release (e.g. - Ice Cream Sandwich, Lollipop, and KitKat). All updates and releases after Windows 10 are expected to be made available as free updates, like the Android operating system. Users will receive monthly updates to Windows 10 free of charge, and the title of the operating itself will most likely not change during the next 5 years. What Microsoft has planned after that is anyone's guess.

support for windows 7 is nearing the End

After 10 years, support for Windows 7 is coming to an end on Jan. 14, 2020. On this date your computer will still function just fine, but it will no longer have any support for ongoing issues. Software and security updates will be gone as well. It will be at

greater risk for viruses and malware. The best way for you to stay secure is to buy a new computer with Windows 10. It is possible to spend $200 on downloading and installing Windows 10 on your Window 7, but it is not cost effective, especially since your current machine is probably not robust enough to handle Windows 10. Therefore, it is highly not recommended.

Not only are new modern PCs fast (thanks to solid state drives) and durable with batteries that last longer, the average price for a great PC is considerably less than it was 5-10 years ago. Save your personal files and photos to a cloud or to an external hard drive. Life happens fast and with Windows 10 by your side, you can easily keep up. Windows 10 computers provide on average up to 28 percent faster startups, built-in security, and the apps you use. Your Internet favorites can be exported then imported from one machine to another. None of your programs will transfer so be prepared with a list of what you will need to reload on your new computer. Most are downloads and could have username and passwords required.

Any subscriptions should be deleted from one computer and downloaded to the new one. Samples are Office Suite, Carbonite backup and any other purchased software. Be prepared to spend around $500 on a new laptop. Once you have set up the new computer, you can erase your data, open the computer, take out the hard drive and smash it. Leaving your data on the computer is not a good idea before you recycle or give to someone else.

Gavarone bill to protect ohioans from cyber attacks unanimously passes house

State Senator Theresa Gavarone (RBowling Green) announced the unanimous passage of Senate Bill 52 in the Ohio House.

The legislation will create the Ohio Cyber Reserve—a new division of the Ohio National Guard that specializes in cybersecurity.

The new force will consist of qualified, civilian cybersecurity experts and maintain regional Cyber Response Teams capable of deterring, mitigating and remedying cyber attacks against our local governments, businesses, critical infrastructure and citizens.

Additionally, the bill includes stronger auditing requirements that will ensure the accuracy and integrity of elections while also giving Ohioans increased confidence when

submitting a ballot.

“Almost daily we hear about another government or business that was attacked by cyber hackers,” Gavarone said. “This legislation is going to allow Ohio to fight back against hackers so that our citizens will be better protected from their devastating attacks.”

Senator Gavarone worked jointly with numerous interested parties, including Secretary of State Frank LaRose, Adjutant General John Harris and the Ohio Association of Election Officials, a bipartisan organization representing employees of county boards of elections.

Senate Bill 52 will return to the Senate for a vote on concurrence before heading to the Governor for a signature.

Dorothy Johnston Dorothy Lucille Johnston, age 88, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Oct. 8, 2019, in her home surrounded by family. She was born Sept. 29, 1931 in Toledo to the late Louis and Agnes (Haupricht) Schneider. Dorothy attended Whitney Vocational High School and worked as a fashion buyer at LaSalle Cook. She was later employed as a jewelry buyer at Kmart and as a warehouse associate at Ace Hardware.

Dorothy was an avid golfer, past member of Toledo Tennis Club and Shadow Valley and was affectionately known as the “Cookie Lady” at Whitmer/Washington Local School. She especially enjoyed summers spent at the family cottage on Big Platte Lake, Honor, Mich.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of more than 63 years, William John Johnston; grandchild Grace Katherine Koester; brothers Gene and James Schneider; sister Margaret Hennig; and son-in-law Michael Cluckey. She is survived by daughters Patricia Cluckey and Belinda (Larry) Koester; sons Michael (Kerry) and William Jay Johnston; grandchildren, Sean (Jyl) and Eric Cluckey, Shannon (DJ) Belkofer, Abigail, Nikolaus and William Koester, Evan, Elliot, Emerson, Zachary (Randi Lee) and Kendra Johnston; great-grandchildren Trent, Jaxon, Wesley and Isabella; sisters Barb Schneider, Mary (Milton) Juers and Rosie (James) Fleitz; brother Louis (Mary Ann) Schneider; sisterin-law Shirley McMan; and brother-in-law Robert Johnston.

Paul Mathias ‘Matt’ Heintschel

Paul Mathias “Matt” Heintschel, 82, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away at his home on Oct. 3, 2019, with his loving wife by his side. Paul was born in Toledo to Vincent and Florence (Yenzer) Heintschel on March 13, 1937. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and Central Catholic High School. Paul began college at The Ohio State University and completed his studies at The University of

Toledo where he earned both his bachelor’s and master's degrees. He worked for Toledo Public Schools as an educator for over 30 years before retiring in 1992. He taught at Cherry School, East Toledo Jr. High, and Point Place Jr. High. Paul then went on to pursue his love for learning through becoming an administrator.

He served as assistant principal of Byrnedale and principal at Burroughs Elementary School.

During his entire life, Paul was a nature enthusiast. He loved being outdoors. Growing up his children fondly remember countless camping and fishing trips; one of his “must do” bucket list items was one last fishing charter.

He was able to cross it off his list and brag about his success of “reeling them in” this past July, a trip he so very much appreciated. One of Paul’s most proud accomplishments was that he spent two years and built his own canoe by hand. Once completed, he was able to partake in the maiden voyage at Olander Park with family by his side. His woodworking skills also included carvings and furniture. Each piece was finely crafted with love and care for someone special in mind, including brothers, sisters, his children and grandchildren and many others. In addition to woodwork Paul was a talented glass artist. He created many objects including detailed lamps.

Paul will be missed dearly by the love of his life, Marcia (Wade) Heintschel; children Greg (Heather) Heintschel, Lynn Heintschel, Shelly Heintschel; children of his heart Katie (Brian) Ezell, Julie Gorman; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Marvin (Judy) Heintschel; sister Ruthann Heintschel, sisterin-law Gay Wolstencroft and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Dorothy (Bill) Sayers, Catherine Heintschel, Agnes (Pete) Rasik; brothers Vincent (Anne), Howard, Phillip (Deanna) Heintschel; and daughter-inlaw Dayle Heintschel.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to either St. Joan of Arc or to ProMedica Hospice. The family wishes to give special thanks to Paul's two dear friends, Lisa and Linda, for their friendship.

They also wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone at ProMedica Hospice and ProMedica Home Healthcare for their continued support and care throughout Paul's entire illness. The nurses and staff were truly a blessing for the family. Special thanks to

Eric Summons

Eric J. Summons, 75, passed away at the University of Michigan Medical Center Oct. 7. Recognized in the area as a consulting psychologist, Eric was drawn to his work, his clients, his attention to detail and the constant pursuit of more knowledge. Through his business, Selection Resource Inc., Eric worked with countless clients over the years to strengthen employee performance and improve organizational operations. He was about ‘People in the Workplace.’

Eric was a quiet man with a ready smile, thoughtful toward others, humble and humane. His wry humor was always delivered with a twinkle in his eye. He shared astute insights on current affairs, the complexities of situations and the cyclical nature of our lives with his professional colleagues, personal friends and political opposites.

Eric was involved with a variety of community activities and served as the board chairman for the YMCA of Greater Toledo and as president of the Toledo Rotary Club. He had been an active member of the University of Toledo College of Engineering Advisory Board. As the Leadership Executive in Residence for the College of Business & Innovation, he was also the 2012 Edwin Dodd Distinguished Lecturer. He was a longtime member of the Toledo Club.

Born in Orange, N,J., Eric was raised in Reading, Penn.. He was a graduate of the Franklin & Marshall College, Villanova University and the University of Toledo, attaining his PhD in psychology.

Eric retired from the U. S. Army and the Army Reserves as a Lt. Colonel following 25 years of service. He enlisted during the turbulent Viet Nam war years, attended Officer Candidate School and was deployed to Viet Nam. For his service, he was awarded both the National Defense Service and Bronze Star Medals.

Eric is survived by his wife, Olivia; daughters Mary (Jeffrey Clause) and Sarah (David Laforet); brother Richard; stepchildren Nina Habib Borders (Stephen), John Habib (Christopher Sandersfeld), Lisa Habib Millewich (Geoffrey); three stepgrandchildren, Leah and Cara Borders and

Bryce Millewich; and Pamela Summons, mother of his daughters.

The family suggests donations to the YMCA of Greater Toledo, the Toledo Rotary Foundation, the Toledo Symphony, the University of Michigan Frankel CardioVascular Center or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Roger Coventry

Roger Alan Coventry, 57, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Oct. 5, 2019, at Ebeid Hospice. He was born in Shelbyville, Ill., to Carl and Betty (Allen) Coventry on Oct. 16, 1961. Roger was a 1979 graduate of Findlay High School in Illinois. He also attended Eastern Illinois University where he completed his bachelor’s degree. He proudly served for over 20 years in the United States Naval Construction Battalions, better known as the Seabees. He married Barbara Thomas and together they moved to the Toledo area almost 30 years ago.

Roger worked as a computer technician for the Geek Squad at Best Buy for over 20 years. He was a member and served as usher at St. Pius X Catholic Church and was part of the building and grounds committee. He also served on the board for the Barrington Woods Home Owner Association. He could always be found helping family and friends with their technological needs.

Roger is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; son, Jared Coventry; mother, Betty Lambdin; siblings, Steve (Connie) Coventry, Dennis (Linda) Coventry, Marilyn (Mark) Zimmer, Mike (Patricia) Coventry, Lynda Baker, Carla (Neil) Dettling; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Coventry; sister, Sherry Cleveland; step-father, John Lambdin; and brother-in-law, Steve Baker.
