Community meeting set to help update Owens Community College strategic plan Steve Robinson, Ph.D., Owens Community College’s new president, is on a mission to craft an updated strategic plan for the college using the input and feedback of interested community members from the area. To that end, he is hosting a community meeting at the King Road Library on Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m.

“This is the last of 10 meetings we have held in partnership with the Toledo Lucas County Library to talk with members of the community and hear their input for Owens Community College,” he explained. “We are listening to the feedback we are receiving from the community and will use this information in crafting our updated strategic plan and developing strategic priorities,” he said.

The new president also is eager to learn about the workforce needs of local companies and how the college can meet those needs.

According to Robinson, to date, the meetings have resulted in very interesting conversations with engaged people who are interested in the future of Owens and what Owens will become.

In addition, Robinson will hold meetings on campus for staff and employees to gather input for the plan.

“While our main goals remain focused on recruitment, retention and the graduation rate, we will compile the information we have gathered from our community and staff meetings to develop five to eight goals as part of our new strategic plan,” he offered. “My ultimate goal is to develop a plan that will allow us to continue to do great things for students.”

“Owens offers a great opportunity for students. We provide over 100 academic programs for those who wish to prepare for a career, who wish to retrain for a new career or for those looking for an affordable option as

they prepare to transfer to a four year college or university,” he noted. Owens Community College has developed program and course transfer agreements with many colleges and universities for the benefit of students including Bowling Green State University, Defiance College, Eastern Michigan University, Heidelberg College, Lourdes University, Ohio State University, Ohio University and

University of Toledo and more.

Robinson, a native of Grand Blanc, Mich., earned a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature, a master’s degree in English, and a doctorate in critical studies in the teaching of English, all from Michigan State University. He and his family currently reside in Sylvania and his children are students at Southview High School.

The presidents of Lourdes University and Owens Community College signed a dual admission partnership called Gray Wolf Express on Friday, Oct.12.

Gray Wolf Express is designed to provide a seamless pathway to a bachelor’s degree from Lourdes University while also decreasing the time to degree completion, saving students time and money.

“The partnership between Owens and Lourdes once again demonstrates our commitment to making a bachelor’s degree affordable and accessible to a broad range of learners. The Gray Wolf Express pathway not only benefits students, it also benefits our region and economy,” said Mary Ann Gawelek. Ed.D., president of Lourdes University.

“We are pleased to strengthen our partnership with Lourdes University by offering a more seamless pathway for students to gain admission to both institutions simultaneously,” said Steve Robinson, Ph.D., president of Owens Community College.

“Owens is committed to removing barriers to student success, and Gray Wolf Express is another important part of that commitment.”

Public meeting planned for road updates

The city of Sylvania, in coordination with the Ohio Department of Transportation, will host an open house public meeting to update the community on a proposed reconstruction of the US-23 Interchange with Monroe Street and Alexis Road on Tuesday, Oct. 16 , from 4 to 6 p.m. at the city of Sylvania City Council Chambers, 6635 Maplewood Ave. There will be no formal presentation and community members are welcome to attend at their leisure any time during open house hours to review exhibits and ask questions.

The project proposes a reconstruction of the US-23 Interchange with Monroe Street and Alexis Road in the city of Sylvania. Also included are improvements to intersecting roadways between Harroun Road and US-23.

The project is in the Feasibility Study and Alternative Evaluation phase and we are asking for public input on the alternatives to improve deficiencies, increase capacity and accessibility at the Monroe Street interchange.

Brookview Dental sponsors the Great Candy Buyout

The 17th annual Great Candy Buyout at Brookview Dental, 7135 Sylvania Ave. will be held on Nov. 1 and 2. Following Halloween, all ghosts, goblins and other trick or treaters are invited to bring their leftover Halloween candy to the office. The dental staff will buy back your candy for $1 per pound.

New this year, the child who sells the most amount of candy back at Brookview Dental will also receive a $25 gift card.

Last year, nearly 200 pounds of candy was collected and sent to U.S. troops oversees through “Heros in Action,” to give American service men and women the feeling of being home for Halloween.

The Brookview staff also encourages parents and their children to eat less candy to prevent and minimize tooth decay.

Many new features are part of the 33rd annual Fall Festival

The Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce presents the 33rd annual Sylvania Fall Festival, sponsored by Cooper-Smith and Dave White Chevrolet, on Sunday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Historic Downtown Sylvania.

This year’s event will feature over 170 craft and business booths, 12 food trucks, live entertainment, a pie baking contest, and the annual parade from 1 to 2 p.m. along Main Street. A Family Fun Zone will be full of free kids activities including bounce houses, face painting, cornhole, free train rides, pony rides, a free Pumpkin Patch, and more.

The Sylvania Fall Festival will also feature a Trick or Treat on Main Street, a Donut Eating Challenge between Northview High School and Southview High School students and the Police and Fire Departments, a Pumpkin Carving Contest, and the Dino Dash – an adult and kids race down Main Street with contestants dressed in the inflateable T-rex costumes.

The Sylvania Boy Scouts Troop 154 will be collecting canned goods to be donated to Sylvania Area Family Services. All goods collected at the Fall Festival are used to make Thanksgiving baskets for local families.

This year’s Sylvania Fall Festival parade will feature three high school marching bands as well as local dance, twirling and karate groups.

We have 3 and 5-year-olds who are SO excited about Halloween but also a little bit unsure about some of the scarier aspects. Can you recommend any fun and gently spooky books for little ones?

A. Of course! And we understand.

Halloween can be fun and thrilling and exciting, but also mysterious and scary and can challenge comfort zones. Reading picture books and stories with your children is a great way to help children familiarize themselves with the holiday and reduce some of that apprehension by openly talking about it. For some handpicked just-for-you selections, stop by the Library and speak with our children’s librarians who can right-size suggestions to fit your little ones’ interests. We also have special story times beginning Oct. 25 where children are encouraged to dress-up and join in Halloween themed activities. And make sure you check out Count Wakula’s Halloween Funny Fest! Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. for a fiendishly funny Halloween magic show. All ages are welcome - let’s just say there’s Room on the Broom!

Dynamo Pat Wahl is no stranger to Sylvania. She has lived in Sylvania Township since 1971. Always involved in some way in the community, she has driven a school bus, worked at Maplewood School, and volunteered at Hillview Elementary. She even once owned a BMX track with her husband and worked in retail. Whew! After her husband passed away, Pat wanted to find work that was meaningful, so 22 years ago she decided to become a licensed massage therapist in Ohio — practicing first at home, then at Rainbows & Roses in Starlite Plaza, and finally at Harmony in Life, where she still works one day a week.

Working at Harmony brought Pat back to downtown Sylvania where she saw the revitalized interest and energy coming back with festivals, Red Bird Art Walks and other community activities. People were out and about here again. They were engaged and excited, and she wanted to be a part of it.

Raising her family here, Pat had many fond memories of downtown Sylvania — like ice cream at Custer’s and local activities shared with her husband and children. These memories and a long-standing family association with candy sparked the idea for a candy shop. So after seeing the “for rent” sign in the Sylvania Historical Village, The Village Candy Shoppe was born in January 2018. Pat wanted it to be the perfect place for kids of all ages to browse through a potpourri of sweets — whether nostalgic or new, a gourmet lollipop, honey spoon, or Euro-style chocolates and fudge.

Eternally energetic and creative, you’ll probably also find Pat involved in a fun Red Bird activity or brainstorming other ways to bring people to the north block of the downtown area. “I’m just grateful to be a part of this energized Sylvania community,” says Pat. “And people have been so supportive and enthusiastic. I get visitors from all over the area who come to Sylvania for some other reason and stop in the store. I know a thing or two about Brian Darah. I know the life-long Sylvanian loves his wife of 37 years, Faye, and their three daughters; the Ohio State Buckeyes and fishing (Yes, in that order.) I also know that his support of Sylvania’s high schools and other local organizations over many years is greatly appreciated by the community. What I never knew or understood is the history and services provided by his company, B-W Auto Supply, until now.

A history lesson

The company was founded by Bert Wonell in 1949, hence the B-W name. He carried one paint line that eventually grew to other

offerings including the giants of the auto paint manufacturers, BASF and PPG Auto Finishes.

The company flourished and opened two additional locations. In 1972, after 23 years in business, Bert Wonell retired. He sold his company to Darah’s uncle, George W. Tanber, who moved the company to 3101 W. Sylvania during the blizzard of 1978. Darah joined the business in 1978.

“As a graduate of THE Ohio State University, I began at B-W as a driver and learned the business from the ground up,” he said. “I then became VP of B-W when I purchased 20 percent of the business. My Uncle George retired in 1987 and I bought the

“In addition to being an automotive paint and equipment distributor, we also are a detail and janitorial supply distributor,” Darah said. “Our main clientele are auto body shops and car dealerships. The research and development for BASF refinishes and the national training center for the company is in Whitehouse, Ohio, which gives B-W a big plus in having everything right here in town. I can get the chemist who developed a product right into a local shop and work with the painter. Toledo metro is often used as a test market for their latest products.”

Darah is proud of the fact that most of the supplies he buys are from local or Ohio companies. “Our janitorial supplies come from Spartan Chemical, whose world headquarters are in Maumee,” he said. “If we can’t support companies in our local area, we at least try to support Ohio. We are the only Sylvania-owned and operated paint distributor and supplier in northwest Ohio. All my competition is either publicly held companies or national chains.

The money stays here in our community by supporting local businesses.”

Even though B-W offers free delivery service to its customers and does so two-to-three times a day, the majority its store customers are the owners and operators of local body shops, who enjoy visiting the store.

“They like to tap the expertise of our paint and supplies staff,” Darah said.

Another plus of having a local auto paint and

supplies store is that car hobbyists and technicians who do things for friends have a place they can buy their supplies and get advice, according to Darah. Also, he said, most car detailer distributors sell their supplies from a truck, not a store front, another plus for B-W.

Uncertain future

Like many older industries, things have changed in the auto paint and supplies business so Darah, 64, is not sure what the future holds “The future is kind of difficult to predict,” he said. “It needs to be written in pencil. The market is changing. Fewer cars are getting repaired because many are being totaled. If you get into a 15 mile-an- hour crash with airbags deployed, you already have $15,000 in repair costs. The other challenge is that there is a big shortage of auto body technicians. In fact, many businesses are having a tough time finding technical people. I wish more millennials would go into the field.”

On a positive note, the family-owned business has welcomed a member of the next generation. Brooke Darah Payzant is serving as a sales representative specializing in detail and janitorial supplies for the business.

“I took over the business from my uncle and now I have my daughter working in the business. That means a lot,” said Darah. “It’s been rewarding seeing the business grow over the years and being fortunate enough to give back to the community. I truly appreciate the loyalty of my employees. [Store manager] Doug Leestma has been with us 44 years and [purchasing manager] Kent Fowler has been us for 45 years, something you rarely see anymore. We also have the loyal customers who see the value of working with a local company. So, all-in-all it’s been a great ride, and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Tree Frog Massage Studio is home to multiple therapists

Emily Snyder welcomes licensed massage therapists to join her at Tree Fog Massage.

For the past two years, licensed massage therapist Emily Snyder has been working with clients in her Tree Frog Massage Studio at 6024 Renaissance Pkwy.

“This space has been ideal for me,” she stated. “This is just what I wanted. The reception area is the right size and the therapy room I use is large enough to accommodate couples. There is also excellent convenient parking for clients right outside our door.”

Snyder created a second therapy room enabling her to invite other massage therapists to rent the space. To date, five therapists are scheduling the space and seeing clients at Tree Frog Massage. “It is wonderful to work with other therapists and provide options for clients. This also helps me with overhead expenses. And it provides an economical location for other therapists to work with their clients. Each of them operates independently, has his or her own key and makes his or her own schedule. It works very well for all of us,” she said.

In addition, Snyder also teaches at the Orion Institute, formerly Healing Arts

Institute, the massage therapy school where she trained several years ago.

Snyder is certified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapy, which can help those suffering from fibromyalgia as well as working with cancer patients and those dealing with post-surgical recovery.

“At least 10 years ago, before I became involved, I had been receiving massages for a long time and really enjoyed the time I spent.

While I had been in marketing in the corporate world, I thought that would be something I would enjoy doing,” she recalled.

“My husband, Tim, was very supportive, although he misses buying massage gift cards for me. That was his 'go-to' gift for me,” she laughed.

According to Snyder, people choose to have a massage and feel better after they receive one. “This was a good career move for me. I like seeing people come in and become relaxed and enjoy their session. I do like helping people and my job is very rewarding,” she stated.

The Sylvania Community Improvement Corporation’s driving mission is to promote economic development in the Sylvania Community. One of the ways it does this is by keeping its membership informed about upcoming development projects in the region. New projects create impact in a number of ways, and in the case of the proposed changes to the Monroe Street/US 23 interchange, an improved traffic pattern could have a positive effect on business in the area.

On Nov. 2, the SACIC will hold its bimonthly trustees meeting, during which Kevin Aller, Public Safety/Service Director for the city of Sylvania and Joe Shaw, Deputy Director of Public Service for the city of Sylvania will provide a summary of the public open house discussion that took place Oct. 6 and more details on the potential timeline of the project. Anyone interested in joining the SACIC for this informative luncheon at noon in the ProMedica Flower Hospital conference room may RSVP to Michelle Sprott at msprott@sylvaniachamber.org.

Ann and Tom Broderick and their dog Brewster Ann and Tom Broderick are celebrating the 35th anniversary of their business, The Cabinetry, which first opened at 6600 Sylvania Ave. in Saxon Square in October 1983. “I had been working in Boston and I met Tom and we planned to be married in Toledo,” said Ann. “Meanwhile, my dad, Nick Beresky, a local builder and developer, suggested we consider moving back here and sell the Grabill line of cabinetry that he recommended. We actually were married in January and signed a lease for our space in July.”

“Saxon Square has proven to be a great location for us. It is easily accessible from the expressway, and there is great parking here," Mrs. Broderick added.

She explained that the firm designs and supplies cabinetry for kitchens, baths, media centers, bars, wine cellars and more.

“Along the way, Tom really found his niche.

He loves to plan customized layouts for clients, and we have evolved into doing much more than kitchens,” Mrs. Broderick explained. “While we continue to offer the Grabill line, we also offer a private line, which incorporates Tom’s designs. He has done staircases, interior millwork as well as exterior trim and details.”

“We stress form following function. We want people to be happy with how things work. We know what we do will look great,

but function is so important,” Mrs. Broderick emphasized. “For those clients who have difficulty envisioning our designs, Tom will create models to help them ‘see’ his vision.”

A recent financial audit of Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority by the Auditor of State’s office has returned a clean audit report. TARTA’s excellent record keeping has earned it the Auditor of State Award for the second consecutive year.

TARTA Comptroller Stacey Clink, CPA, director of accounting and financial reporting, stated, “The award reflects the continued dedication and ongoing hard work of the finance team.”

The Auditor of State Award is presented to local governments and school districts upon the completion of a financial audit. Entities that receive the award meet the criteria of a “clean” audit report including filing timely financial reports with the Office Auditor of State’s office in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).

Also, the audit report does not contain any findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, Single Audit findings or questioned costs.

What is the secret to your business success?

“We have been very fortunate as we knew many people in the construction business, which was helpful in the beginning," she said.

"And we love what we are doing, even though we had to learn as we were doing.”

She continued, “In addition, we have been able to develop close relationships with all of the subcontractors, remodelers and builders we work with. We also form great relationships with our clients that we work so closely with. Many return when they buy new homes or second homes. Some of our clients who have sold their homes refer the new owners to us. And as of a few years ago, we have started working with children of our clients.”

Mrs. Broderick noted that clients are pleased that they keep all paper records.

“When a client comes back to perhaps replace appliances or update their cabinetry, they are pleasantly surprised that we can easily pull up their records and easily help them,” she said.

While the Brodericks primarily work with residential clients, they have a large portfolio of commercial projects as well.

New Sylvania Country Club manager eager to build on club's strengths

Former resident Roger Parker has returned to Sylvania, which he called home for over 17 years, to assume the position of general manager at Sylvania Country Club. “I was happy when this opportunity presented itself to me. This is a great club with a long history in the community and is in a wonderful location,” Parker reported. Parker will oversee the operation of the historical facility, which includes the clubhouse dining room, grill, family friendly 19th hole lounge, private event rooms, golf course, pool, tennis and pickle ball courts.

Parker began his career in the hospitality industry working in food and beverage management positions for hotels in New York City. He was recruited by legendary Virgil Gladieux and his son Tim, with whom he worked for over 17 years, to oversee many different company operations. Most recently, he served as general manager at the Toledo Club for nearly six years.

“This position allows me to use the skills I have gained over the years,” he said. “The historic clubhouse is beautiful and offers many amenities to its members and guests. Our ballroom is a great venue for many activities from formal dinners, weddings, grazing and cocktail parties and is also an ideal location for luncheons. There are also smaller rooms for private meetings or events.”

The new manager anticipates increasing the number of events held at the club, including weddings. “I am reconnecting with all of the wedding consultants and event planners I have worked with in the past. I also plan to establish partnerships in the community to bring additional events to the club,” he offered.

He continued, “The newly redesigned Centennial Grille Room and Bar on the lower

level is very popular with members for both lunches and dinners. Our three-tiered patio with a fire pit is the best in town and overlooks the golf course from every tier. The new family friendly pool and renovated tennis and pickleball courts are fabulous,” he pointed out.

“We also can boast about our beautiful and challenging golf course. Sylvania Country Club offers a great value for families and golfers.”

In addition, Parker credits the strong

support of board members and the longevity and loyalty of the staff as two additional strengths of the organization that attracted him to the position.

Raw Apple Cake

4 cups apples, peeled and chopped 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup sugar 2 eggs ½ cup chopped nuts 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 cups flour 1 cup raisins ½ cup oil In a large bowl, combine all ingredients together, except apples. Fold in apples last.

Pour mixture into a greased and floured 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 F for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

BY JENNIFER RUPLE A simple activity to keep their young sons occupied at the farm became the vehicle that launched a full-fledged family operation. Gust Brothers Pumpkin Farm, located at 13639 Mulberry Rd. in Ottawa Lake, Mich., was Jennifer Ruple established in 1989 when Dan and Terese Gust taught their children how to raise pumpkins. “With four little boys, we were just trying to keep them busy and give them something to do,” reminisced Mr. Gust.

“Back then, they were growing their pumpkins and selling them by the side of the road,” he added.

The farm, which has been in Mr. Gust’s family for just over 100 years, has grown since then offering everything to make the fall season magical including traditional and unusual shaped pumpkins and gourds, corn shocks, straw bales, chrysanthemums, handcrafted candles, cider and donuts, cookies, pies and hayrides. A u-pick station is available for all ages to pick their own flowers and vegetables.

Guests are also invited to walk through the animal barn and visit with the calves, newborn piglets, and goats that love to receive treats from visitors.

After studying agriculture, the four sons all moved to homes within a mile of the farm.

“They all went to college and came back,” said Mrs. Gust. “We’re so lucky they want to be involved because we couldn’t do it all by ourselves.” Each son plays a different role in the business. Mr. Gust explained, “Nate (35) is our donut maker, Joe (33) makes hay and does crop farming such as corn and soy beans, Jake (32) coordinates the u-pick and CSA programs, and Dave (28) grows the mums and is also involved in the crop farming. Their wives all help out with the farm too.”

The couple have nine grandchildren between the ages of 9 and 4 months who also enjoy getting in on the action. “The 4-monthold isn’t quite ready though,” laughed Mr. Gust.

“Everyone is involved, and everyone pitches in.

That’s a wonderful thing.”

Gust Brothers Pumpkin Farm remains open for the fall season through Oct. 31. U-pick flowers and vegetables are available until frost.

To help you enjoy the season even more, Mrs. Gust offers three of her family’s favorite pumpkin and apple recipes. Happy harvest!

Terese and Dan Gust ¼ cup mayonnaise 3 tablespoons white vinegar 2 teaspoons sugar ½ cup oil Arrange salad ingredients on a large platter or in a bowl.

Whisk together dressing ingredients. Serve on the side of the salad.

Aunt Barb’s Apple Salad Lettuce 2 apples, sliced Walnuts Dried cherries

Dressing ¼ cup maple syrup

1 package yellow cake mix 15 ounce can pumpkin 12 ounces evaporated milk 3 eggs 1 ½ cups sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup chopped pecans 1 cup butter In a large bowl, mix together, pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon and salt.

Spread mixture in a 9 x 13 baking dish.

Sprinkle cake mix on top. Then sprinkle pecans over cake. Drizzle melted butter on top.

Bake at 350 F for 45-50 minutes.

Northview student launches nonprofit to benefit students

Elle Rhee Northview sophomore Elle Rhee knows how important eye glasses can be for those with vision problems. She’s been dealing with being nearsighted since she was in the third grade and is functionally blind. But thanks to glasses, her vision has been corrected and she is able to function without issues.

She was made aware of the fact that many other children with vision problems are not as fortunate as she. Her dad, an opthalmologist, pointed out that there are

many children whose parents or guardians cannot afford to pay for glasses.

Rather than shaking her head and voicing platitudes, she decided that she could do something to make a difference. She came up with a plan to raise money to help buy glasses for those children.

With help from her family and her dad's staff, particularly his office manager, the young woman formed the aptly named, “Spectacles for Students,” an organization that was recently granted 501 c3, nonprofit status. She also worked with a local attorney through the process making sure that all documentation was completed correctly.

“This has been quite a learning experience,” she related.

Moving forward, she and her team are planning a variety of fund-raising activities including developing a web page that encourages direct donations to supplement the solicitation letters she has sent to interested supporters.

Elle plans to make contact with schools to develop lists of qualified students who need glasses. She also plans to distribute flyers outlining the program to raise awareness and to help find students who are in need of help in purchasing glasses.

young they might be,” she said. She made a presentation to a group at the Sylvania Branch Library on Oct. 9.

HLS Orthodontics offers ‘Smiles for Teachers’ To pay it forward to a teacher, HLS Orthodontics is seeking a Sylvania-area candidate for its inaugural “Smiles For Teachers” program. NOSF celebrates 20 years of scholarships

This school year the Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund is celebrating twenty years of providing educational choices through need-based scholarships for K-8 students to use for private schools or for homeschool expenses. NOSF has awarded over 15,400 scholarships totaling $13.2 million to students in Northwest Ohio since the 1999-2000 school year.

This school year NOSF has awarded 750 scholarships for children to attend 72 different private schools in 16 counties. The average scholarship award is $1,088. In order to qualify for these scholarships, students have to

reside in Allen, Crawford, Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Huron, Lucas, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Richland, Sandusky, Seneca, Van Wert, Williams, Wood or Wyandot County and meet the income eligibility guidelines set by CSF. NOSF alum Kristine Below graduated from St. Jerome Catholic School in 2009 and said of her experience, “The school taught me how to study as well as provided the motivation for doing well.” Ms. Below has since graduated from The Ohio State University and is working as a neurophysiology technologist at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.

Gardening at Maplewood School

Many people are unaware of the Garden Club at Maplewood Elementary School. Directed by Georgie Keyees, this group meets once a week in the school’s garden.

This large area is bursting with herbs, flowers, and a variety of vegetables.

In this exceptional club, people have the experience of getting their hands dirty while digging into the earth as they plant and harvest potatoes, corn, squash, and beans, along with a variety of flowers. Members even get to hang out with the worms once in a while.

Although the club focuses on nurturing our environment, students, under the guidance of Ms. Georgie, also do interesting

crafts with their resources. Recently, they each made an individual dream catcher using willow branches. Along with this, the group also makes scarecrows, and scatters them around the entrance of the school. In the winter, club members make wreaths using items such as twigs, ribbons, and pinecones. During the spring, the group is involved in butterfly raising and learning how to pollinate.

Everyone knows Ms. Georgie loves gardening, and her enthusiasm is infectious.

Throughout the year, students learn the importance of responsibility, environmental awareness, and how to be good stewards of the planet. Ms. Georgie’s Garden Club leaves participants with good memories. All I can say is that it was a brilliant idea for Ms. Georgie to start the club at Maplewood, bringing joy to many people.

Derek Koster is a seven year member of the band on French horn. He is a squad leader, Symphonic Band section leader, and band secretary. During his tenure with the SV Band, Derek has volunteered countless hours at band events and fundraisers, has led a small ensemble for OMEA Solo & Ensemble Contest, and sets a great example for his peers by having high expectations of himself as a musician. “Derek's commitment to his own musicianship and helping his peers is inspiring. Derek plans to attend BGSU, studying forensic science and continuing in music with the Falcon Marching Band.

Daniel Lee is a violinist and member of the Chamber Orchestra, and is currently serving as president of the Northview Orchestras. Daniel has represented Northview in the OMEA NW Regional Orchestra, All-State Orchestra, and the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras. He performs regularly at Solo and Ensemble contests. Daniel is a member of A Capella Choir, Harmony Road Show, North Covers, and Pit Orchestra. He is also a member of the UT Orchestra. This past summer Daniel partnered with ProMedica to found a program called ‘Healing Together’ where he taught music to children experiencing health challenges. After graduation, Daniel will attend college to study biochemistry and medicine. Daniel is the son of Kay and Hoski Lee.

Sylvania–Then and Now

Now as we round the corner at Main Street and turn east onto Erie Street, the first house at the corner is known as 6532 Erie St. This property and the property behind it at 5812 Main St. were originally part of a halfacre parcel that was owned by James and Emma Gibbs. The homes were both constructed in 1897 and in 1898 both homes were sold to Oliver Young. The current owner of this house told me that Helen Langham Weisweber, who used to live on north Main Street, told her that her father, Carroll Langham, built both of these homes.

In 1903 the Young family sold both homes on the half-acre parcel to Amon J. and

Lucinda Canfield, and in 1904 he split the half-acre parcel and sold a .23-acre parcel at 5812 Main St. to Mary Estella Randall, which was discussed in my last article. The Canfields kept this .37-acre parcel on the corner.

Mary Kelly sold this property in 1916 to Fidelia Waffle. She only owned the property for three years before selling in 1919 to Henry J. and Anna Miller. In the 1920 census the Miller family was living here as follows: Henry J. Miller – owned home free of mortgage – 54 years old – married – occupation – laborer – building trade – earning a wage; Anna M. Miller – wife – 48 years old – married; Eloise C. Miller – daughter – 28 years old – married – occupation- none; Mabel Kasting – daughter – 21 years old – married – occupation – none; Leroy Flatz – grandson – 8 years old – attending school.

A 1926 address directory for the downtown Sylvania district listed Henry Miller at 6532 Maplewood Ave. and then in 1928 the Millers sold this property to James F. and Helen M. Reynolds. When the 1930 census was taken James and Helen Reynolds, who now owned this home, were listed living on Reynolds Road in Adams Township, so they were obviously renting this house out while they owned the home.

After checking and double-checking the 1930 census it was determined that the census taker completely missed recording the residents living at this address. In the 1940 census Ida Page was renting this home for $20 per month. She was listed as 74 years old and a widow. Living with her was her son Joe Page, 46 years old, single, employed as a salesman for a meat packing company. This census indicates that they had been living at this same address in 1935.

In 1943 Etta M. Johnson purchased the home. She was born Etta Mae Cartwright, and was first married to William W. Carl in 1897. After he died in 1925, she married Charles Kimbell in 1928, and then he died in 1939, and she married Ora Johnson in 1940.

Etta Johnson died in 1951 and according to her obituary notice she was 72 years old, a lifelong resident of Sylvania, and died at her home at 6532 Erie St. after a one-week illness. Surviving was her husband Ora

Johnson, daughters, Mrs. Russell (Irene) Cummins, Toledo, Mrs. (Evelyn) Henry Pelton, Sylvania; and son, Alfred Carl, Sylvania.

In 1952, after Etta died, her will transferred this property equally to her three adult children: Evelyn Pelton, Alfred Carl and Irene Cummins. Then that same year they sold the property to Richard J. and Margaret E. Shelley. Richard Shelley had taken a teaching position in the machine shop program at Burnham High School that year, but appears to have returned to Findlay, Ohio to teach the following year, so he sold this home to Henry and Evelyn Pelton.

Henry and Evelyn Pelton are shown living here in this home from 1953 until 1961. In 1958 their son Jerry Pelton married Julia Gonzales and they lived here with Henry and Evelyn. An article in the local newspaper dated Oct. 26, 1961 reported that Henry Pelton of 6532 Erie St., an employee of the post office and an active member of the fire department, required three pints of rare RH negative A-type blood before a serious operation the next day and they were urging residents to come forward and help locate anyone with this blood type.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pelton purchased the home at 6014 Park St. in 1961 and moved to that home, while Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Pelton remained at this Erie Street address. Henry Pelton died in 1964, and then this property transferred to his wife. Evelyn sold this home to her son Jerry Pelton in 1973 and then she passed away in 1984.

Jerry and Julia Pelton continued to live here and raise their daughter and three sons in this home. Jerry Pelton passed away in 2007 just before he and Julia were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. He worked for 47 years at Vin Devers, Inc. His wife Julia still lives here and the property was transferred into her name in 2008. They have been great neighbors of mine for many years!

"2018 Leaf Collection" It is that time of the year again already and the annual leaf collection will be starting the week of Oct. 22. Leaf collection is a very big job in the city of Craig Stough Sylvania, and is a city service used by many of our residents. I remember the burning of leaves when I was a child and the smoke and the smell that were an ever present part of the fall. But leaf burning is no longer permitted, and probably never was very safe.

Our "City of Trees" lives up to its namesake by having tens of thousands of trees throughout the community. Approximately 7,700 street trees are growing in street right-ofways alone, with many thousands more in parks and on private lands, including the towering oaks and maples native to the area.

Last year, city crews spent 3,230 hours loading and hauling 10,800 cubic yards of

Fence variance allowed

If the adage, “good fences make good neighbors,” is true, two home owners on Jimson Court will soon find out if a bigger fence makes for better neighbors. The two recently received permission from the Sylvania Township board of zoning appeals to erect fences of eight feet in height along their adjoining rear lot lines. In their zoning district, the maximum height allowed is six feet.

The two who sought the waiver on the height restriction are Todd Simpson, of 8817 Jimson and Michele Stuckey of 8809 Jimson.

In similar letters sent to the Sylvania Township zoning office both homeowners said they needed the extra height to shield their view and, hopefully, some of the noise from a swimming pool recently installed at the home behind them at 8752 Slate Ridge.

In order to install the pool, they said, the back yard grade of that home was built up so that it is now about four feet higher than the back yards of the houses on Jimson Court.

Simpson said he had installed six trees in his back yard to try to alleviate the issue, but noted that it may take several years before he trees have grown enough to be of significant help. Ms. Stuckey said she had three trees

leaves to the city composting field on Yankee Road north of town. There the leaves and green yard waste are ground and composted into wind rows. The wind rows are turned each year, and the composting process takes about three years to turn the materials into SylvanGro, a rich compost the city sells by the bushel.

Leaf collection is paid for with General Fund dollars. A separate property tax assessment is not collected in Sylvania as it is in some nearby communities.

The annual leaf collection begins the week of Oct. 22 with one or two Streets Division collection crews as needed following predetermined routes through the city. As more leaves are raked to the curb, two additional crews will be working full time at leaf collection. In an effort to speed up leaf collection, temporary workers are used and overtime is offered city workers in the Forestry and Streets Divisions when needed.

Sticks, grass clippings, flowers, plants, etc. can clog or break the leaf loaders and are not to be part of the leaf collection process. Those items should be set out separately for regular pick-up by the Green Recycling program of the

They each said they had the approval of their homeowners association if the township board approved the variance. The five-member board allowed for the variance unanimously.

Township Housing Permits

On the last day of 2016, the Sylvania Township planning office issued its 100th permit for construction of a single-family home for that year. There was no real benefit to that, but the office staff was happy, because the century mark had been established as something of a goal after the number of permits had fallen to a low of 28 in 2009 during the financial crises.

Single-family housing permits had been on a general up trend, but hitting the 100 mark brought some good feelings.

The township fell back slightly last year, issuing a total of 91permits. There will be no nervously watching the door this year to see if someone is bringing in a last-minute request in order to reach 100. As of the end of September, there have already been 104 granted.

There is no single development or circumstance which accounts for the surge, officials said. Just a steady number of permits over the year. If any number comes into play as this year comes to a close it may be the record high of 134 set in 2006.

Please do not pile leaves into the street – keep them on the grassy area next to the curb or pavement edge. Every year I see leaves piled way beyond the curb causing some streets to become dangerously narrow, and sometimes forming dams that block storm drainage and cause flooding. The leaves can also clog catch

basins and storm drains.

City crews will move as quickly as possible to collect all the leaves. The crews will make multiple sweeps through the City, six rounds last year. If we have good weather and it doesn't snow too much, and the leaves fall on schedule, the leaf collection will be completed by Dec. 7.

But the weather and the trees don't always cooperate. Thanks for your patience! City of Sylvania crews will be making their rounds and will be to your street soon.

What’s the Difference Between a Modem and a Router?

Whether you’re calling your internet provider for help or talking to your kid, getting technical Janis Weber support can be frustrating. Between all the abbreviations and the secret code language for all the computer stuff, you just want a translator to explain why the Wi-Fi is down. Sometimes even two little grey boxes that look the same do completely different things.

Before we talk about modems, we need to talk about networks. People used to just have a single-family computer in the living room for internet access. That may still be the case in some households, but many are in a situation where everyone around wants to get on the web these days at the same time. They may have laptops and tablets, smartphones that all need an internet connection, and even the TV needs a way to talk to the cable company if you want to watch your shows. You might even have a smart speaker like Alexa or Google Home that helps make life easier. Whether you know it or not, you have a network. If your home network wants to connect to all the other networks out there they all have to be speaking the same language, and those requests and information all have to get from place to place.

The internet is just a network of networks talking to each other.

Your MODEM is the pathway for all your devices to speak with networks across the

world. When you tell Netflix you want to start a movie, or your toddler wants to see the next YouTube video, that’s the device that sends out a request. “Modem” means “modulatordemodulator.” It sounds pretty Star Trek, but what it does isn't so space age. A modem takes that request to play a movie or watch a video and translates it into signals that can travel across the wires that connect your house to your internet provider, and from there into the wider world. Once the answers or information comes back to your house something has to translate it from signals that can cross a wire back into that romantic comedy you're finally getting to watch.

However, the journey doesn’t end there.

Once the data arrives and your modem decodes it, it has to get where it's going in your house. There are usually many different streams with lots of different information going at the same time, as in you want to watch “Mamma Mia,” but your son is trying to do homework and your daughter is playing a game. If his Social Studies pops up where your Abba songs should be, things are going to get tense. That's where routers come in. A ROUTER sends the incoming data where it needs to go and keeps track of which stream of data goes where. It's the traffic cop that keeps everyone from finding out about your secret love of musicals or keeps everyone from being subjected to a long lecture on the War of 1812.

Routers also handle a lot of the work of managing your home network. They do things like run the Wi-Fi connections, use a firewall to keep out hackers, and manage the quality of service, so your movie stays in high definition even when someone else is downloading more homework. Many internet providers like Buckeye use a box that combines both functions. The wire from your wall might go to a combination modem and router, which decodes the traffic and sends it where it needs

Sometimes, technology is amazing. At least until the Wi-Fi goes down.

Oh, the frustrating challenges of an inconsistent Wi-Fi connection! There are plenty of reasons your Wi-Fi keeps dropping at your home or office, like signal congestion, physical location, firmware issues, hardware limitations or maybe your space is just too big for your router coverage. If the latter is the case, you can try setting up network extenders to cover dead spot rooms. Although cheap, the downside with network extenders is that they are slower than your main Wi-Fi connection.

THE ITALIAN GARDENER I enjoy writing, but I’m not in a class where I would be considered good at it. I have written articles for national journals over the years, but have fallen short of my secret goal of being Rick Cozza seen in the New York Times or Cleveland Plain Dealer Magazine. But that hasn’t stopped me in the least. Call it stubbornness or call it ‘just enjoying doing what I like to do.’

Anyway, I do enjoy reading writers who have much, much better ability with the language than I will ever have, and am fascinated with their style, and command of just the right word. But I can see where falling short can be frustrating.

An interesting article in the Sunday New York Times opinion section gave me a new view on gardening, hobbies, writing for pleasure, and all we do in the name of ‘leisure time pursuits.’ In this age of becoming experts, driving yourself to be better, and the pursuit of excellence in general, the article lamented the decline of the simple pursuit of pleasure and interest. In the past, the ‘shade mechanic’, the ‘duffer golfer’, the ‘backyard gardener’ brought visions of someone simply doing something they loved, just because they loved doing it.

In today’s view, if you are not at the top of your game, you might just as well not be doing it. The pursuit of excellence sometimes comes above all, or don’t even try. Fall short of an imagined standard, and you just don’t measure up. “Our hobbies, if that is even the word for

them anymore, have become much too serious, too demanding, too tied to whether you are really the person you claim to be,” says the author. He laments the loss of the “exaltation in the mere act of doing.”

My garden-writing guru, Henry Mitchel, wrote years ago that, “In my own garden, I have no paid labor. I do it all myself. This is partly because I am tight with money, partly because I am not rich, but mostly because I don’t like other people pawing over my treasures. I have neither the time nor the energy (nor even the desire) to have a garden that people admire. It is not for them but for me.” And so, dear gardener, should this be our sacred motto.

I have a customer that holds to the philosophy that plants in the garden should not be touching, that there should be space between each. My own philosophy requires overlap, fullness, no space without a plant, and just the opposite approach. But is one right and the other wrong? If we gardened to be viewed as having the Gardens of Versailles, or of being the next Penelope Hobbnobble, there would be no gardens.

So, if you have been toying with the idea of dipping your tootsies into the world of backyard gardening, but were afraid you just didn’t know enough to do it right . . . I’ve killed more than my share of plants over the years, and I still try. Stubborn? Yep! Ignorant? At times, still very much so! From the New York Times article, “. . . demanding excellence in even our hobbies steals from us one of life’s greatest rewards-the simple pleasure of doing something you merely, but truly, enjoy. There is a real and pure joy that comes from just learning and trying to get better.”

Mobile Meals plans 31st Wine Gala

The 31st Annual Wine Gala, presented by Mobile Meals of Toledo, takes place Saturday, Nov. 3, at Parkway Place in Maumee. Reservations are required in advance, by Friday, October 26. Tickets are available on-line at qtego.net/qlink/mmot or by calling 419-255-7806.

The evening begins with the sampling of wines from area distributors along with appetizers from area chefs starting at 6 p.m.

A silent auction will feature a wide range of items, including wine-related items. The silent auction will be available for bidding throughout the evening. Guests will be using Mobile Bidding for the Silent Auction.

A gourmet dinner will be served with a live auction of 30 lots following. The live lots are chosen from an excellent selection of

wines with prices that vary from “affordable everyday” to “high-end, collector-quality, expensive.” Dancing with live music continues until 11 p.m.

Proceeds from the evening will benefit Mobile Meals’ Meals on Wheels Program.

The meal program delivers one or two meals a day to the elderly, ill, disabled and those needing assistance with meal preparation and diet maintenance in the Greater Toledo area. In 2017, over 269,000 meals were served through the home-delivered meal program.

Sylvania and Southview orchestras hold joint concert Sylvania Community Orchestra’s next concert is being held Sunday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Southview High School. It is anticipated to be a spooky delight for all ages. The concert, entitled “Autumn Mystery and Mayhem,” is the annual side-by-side concert that the SCO performs with one of the Sylvania high school orchestras each fall. This year it is the Southview Orchestra.

The popular, annual, hour-long showcase is a free performance open to the public.

Music for this year’s show features a spooky assortment sure to delight attendees. Pieces being performed include Adieu, Witch’s Fiddle, highlights from Harry Potter and

more.

The SCO is one of the many successful programs of the Sylvania Community Arts Commission. By offering free performances, partnerships with greater Toledo and Sylvania youth and high school orchestras, and accessible multigenerational musical experiences, the SCO enriches the cultural life of the community and fosters a lifetime of musical engagement for instrumentalists of all ages and levels of expertise.

Beginning on Oct. 20, Bird’s Eye View Circus will offer three weekly mini sessions designed for families. Looking for a way to build confidence, strength, and communication? Over the course of the mini-sessions adults and kids ages 8 and up get to try silks, lyra, trapeze, partner acrobatics, tightwire, balance and more. This is a great way to connect with kids in a supportive and safe environment. Join instructor Chloe Whiting-Stevenson for this special opportunity to do circus as a family.

No prior experience is necessary.

The first session of classes runs on Saturdays Oct. 20, 27, and Nov. 3 from 3:45 to 5 p.m. The second session of classes will be held on Dec. 1, 8, and 15. Each session costs $60 for adults and $45 for a child.

Bird’s Eye View Circus, established in 2012, is the premier circus school in the greater Toledo area. It is located inside the historic Collingwood Arts Center. WhitingStevenson teaches aerial and acrobatics in both the youth and adult programs at Birds Eye View Circus and performs in the professional troop. She works as a movement

and acting instructor, Butoh dancer, mask maker, performance artist, and yoga instructor in the Midwest. She has an MFA in Physical Theatre from the Accademia’ Dell Arte, located in Arezzo, Italy in association with MUW, an MA in Theatre from Illinois State University and a BA in Theatre with a focus on acting from Siena Heights University.

She is a registered 200 RYT Yoga instructor and a certified Elemental Body Alignment Level I teacher. She has worked and performed across the United States, France, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Wales, and Nicaragua.

Her areas of interest include devised theatre, circus, storytelling, puppeteering, Butoh, and research into theatre history. Her passion for teaching, human bodies in motion, and communication are what brought her to share the exciting opportunities within physical theatre.

Trickles to waterfalls life is post cancer journey and do I worry about what my “situation” could mean for my offspring? It has been difficult to express until I came downstairs in my “new” 1930s old home to discover water on the kitchen floor that appeared to be coming from the newly installed ceiling fan. That feeling of panic is familiar. For I know, and have experienced, that trickles can lead to waterfalls, electrical outages and having the ceiling cave in at any moment. Yes, I know the feeling all too well. It’s the same one that tugs at me every day that ends in “Y”, as a survivor with three daughters.

It’s October. Fall colors, sweater weather (if it ever drops below 84 degrees), Big Ten football and pink ribbons splattered everywhere in honor of Breast Cancer

Awareness Month. I am so very tired of being made aware. I am already mindful of the disease, wrapped in a pretty pink ribbon, that I survived and that has taken far too many people who I love. People often ask me how my

As a parent, you are hardwired to protect your children. How do you defend your children against a silent enemy that attacked you when you least expected it? I was a nonsmoking, athletic mom who had never taken an illegal substance and was the proverbial “good girl” her entire life. OK, I did (and do) like a glass (or two) of red wine and the occasional margarita, but that was my only vice. There were no risk factors—not even a trickle—before the ceiling came down around me with a cancer diagnosis at the age of 42.

I wish I could say that the feeling of helplessness fades, but it doesn’t. I continually remind myself of the advancements in the medical world that I hope and pray will lead to a cure. For now, all my children have to defend themselves against cancer are genetic tests and scans.

I have always wanted to leave my children rainbows, sunshine and memory-making moments. How could this be part of my legacy? I want to scream at cancer and tell it that it’s OK to pick on me but leave my beautiful, young, caring daughters alone.

I have no idea what the outcome of my current kitchen water issue will be. It could be something minor or I could lose an entire part of my upstairs floor or ceiling. Regardless, I am determined to stop the leakage. I plan to do the same, to the best of my ability, with cancer and its effect on my children. I may not be able to control what flows in our direction, but I can control my attitude and how they see me as a parent. I can show them how to cope when life gets tough. I can give them a safe haven to ride out any rough waters where they can freely express their fears and anger. I can remind them that we have a tremendous support system that will help us even if our ceiling comes crashing down.

Oh, and if it does, I will remind them to look up. For miraculously, when things tumble down at your feet, you can see the sky a whole lot clearer.

Guilt with a Capital G

Cancer comes with a lot of guilt. It was incredibly difficult after my surgery to look at my daughters and desperately try to suppress the fear that they may have to endure a similar experience. I am clueless on how to protect them and give them strength to battle the fear that comes with my disease. It may not sound rational, but in my mind I am the one who brought this foe into our warm, loving home. I have always been the “responsible” one and when it comes to my genetics, this is no different. I am the one that turned on the faucet that could lead to a nasty flood.

More than $1 million raised for Cannaley Treehouse Village

Toledo Metroparks is planning a treehouse village at Oak Openings.

Linda Najarian Cannaley said her late husband, Jim, “would be smiling from ear to ear” about plans to build a treehouse village on property the Swanton couple once owned adjacent to Oak Openings Preserve Metropark.

Cannaley sold the property to the park district several years ago to become part of the preserve. What no one knew at the time was that the property would become the Beach Ridge Area, home to a 12-mile mountain bike trail and now five treehouses.

Metroparks Board of Park Commissioners voted to name the latest addition the Cannaley Treehouse Village. Linda Cannaley is a Swanton-area native, former teacher and longtime real estate broker. Her husband, Jim Cannaley, was president and CEO of Woodsage Holdings in Holland.

When Metroparks executive director Dave Zenk first approached Mrs. Cannaley about the treehouses she recalled “I instantly liked the idea. How could you not?”

“Linda has been the driving force behind the treehouse village,” Zenk said. “Because of her, families will be able to rent cabins or tent platforms in the trees for overnight stays, or a

large cabin with a canopy walk and crow’s nest for private events. These are the kinds of creative new experiences we think will bring people outdoors and put the Toledo area on the map as a destination for outdoor adventure.”

Joe Napoli, president of the new Metroparks Toledo Foundation, today announced a campaign to raise $1.5 million to pay for the full amount of developing the treehouse village, with Cannaley making a leadership gift of $750,000. Altogether, initial donations announced Friday total more than $1 million. Other significant contributors to date are: Mrs. Peg Fye, in memory of her husband, Jerry, Craig and Amy Findley, Carrie and Brad Alexander, Dave and Carol Haddix, John and Yolanda Szuch, Sharon Simmons and Yarder Manufacturing In addition, two Toledo-based companies were announced as project partners and donors. Therma-Tru will supply all the exterior doors in the treehouse village from its premium line, in addition to a making financial contribution and Owens Corning will donate building materials to be used in the treehouse village construction.

to Hue, the whitecheeked gibbon, and the meerkats and more will discover the orange fruits in their exhibits. Some of the animals will make a meal and others will make a mess but all of them will be using their natural instincts and displaying natural behaviors. This provides a way to see the zoo animals and the enrichment program in action at the same time.

Sue DeMarco

Sue Marie DeMarco, age 75, passed away Sept. 26, 2018, at her home in Maumee, Ohio.

Sue was born July 8, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, to Walter and Coletta Rahman and was a 1961 graduate of Central Catholic High School.

Sue was an active member of St. Joan of Arc Parish where she volunteered at the food pantry and in many other capacities. She was a member of the Christ Child Society where she also worked on projects, and volunteered at the Toledo Hospital and Angie’s Place. She was an avid tennis player and a member of Two’s Tennis Club. She also enjoyed golf and pickle ball.

After raising her children, Sue joined the staff at the family business, Vas-ko Company,

from where she retired. After retiring, she spent much of her time with family and friends at the lake house on Johnson’s Island, Marblehead.

Family was everything to Sue. She was always present for family gatherings and sporting events of her grandchildren. She also loved to travel and see new things. She was comfortable in any situation and always made those around her feel better.

Sue is survived by her children Nick DeMarco (Kelly) of Perrysburg, Ohio, Cindy Gothier (Jim) of Avon, Ohio, and Angela Shern (Scott) of Holland, Ohio; and brothers Jack and Paul Rahman. She was Nana to her grandchildren Geno, Nicholas, Kristina, and Julia DeMarco, Jack, Amanda, Allison and Nicole Gothier, and Ellen, Marla and Grace Shern. Also surviving is her significant other, Mike Smith, whom she traveled around the world with and attended the grandchildren’s

sports and school events. He became a very important part of not only Sue’s life but also the lives of Sue’s children and grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 40 years, Gene, who passed away in 2004; brother Jim Rahman; and sister-in-law Virginia Hyslop.

Oran Kinker

Oran M. Kinker, age 75, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Sept. 28, 2018 in Fort Myers.

Oran was born in Toledo on Nov. 16, 1942, to Milton and Elaine (Ready) Kinker. He was employed at Chrysler Jeep as a tool and process engineer supervisor retiring in 2001. Oran was a member of the Moose lodge #964 of Ft Myers and a lifetime member of the American Veterans Club Post# 1 of Fort Myers (aka The Little Club). Before moving to Florida, Oran was a longtime member of Maumee River Yacht Club. You could always find Oran on the golf course or boating around the back waters point out dolphins, turtles and manatees. He also enjoyed swimming and snow skiing in Vail most winters with Courtney and Zach.

Surviving Oran are his wife, Betty; daughter Courtney Kinker; son Zachary Kinker; step-daughter Patty (John) Pawlaczyk; step-son Todd (Heidi) Taber; brother Allen (Sandra) Kinker; stepgrandchildren Caitlin, Sarah, and Noah Pawlaczyk; and the ever faithful Pippa the Puppy. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joseph Angel

Joseph M. “Bud” Angel, 90, was born on Aug. 5, 1928 in South Bend, Ind., to the late Joseph and Mary Angel. He passed away Sept. 25, 2018. Joe resided in Hillsdale, Mich., until 1942 then lived in Toledo, Ohio, and Sylvania, Ohio, until his passing. He was the younger of two children. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1946. He then furthered his education at The University of Notre Dame where he graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1953. Joe served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956.

In 1956 he married Theresa (Terry) E. DeRose of Hillsdale Mich. He was a devoted husband and was blessed to have 57 years with “his Angel.” Joe was a devoted father to his five children. The needs of his family always came first and he was always present to support his children as they pursued their interests.

Joe began his architectural career in 1954 and was licensed in several states. In 1963 he became a member of The American Institute of Architects and in 1968 Joe was president of the Toledo AIA Chapter. In 1963 he formed an Architectural partnership, Angel, Mull & Associates (AM+A). In 1974, Joe was the recipient of the Presidential Award for Long and Distinguished Service for the Toledo Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute. A sample of his local designs include St. Joseph Catholic Church-Sylvania, Regina Coeli Catholic Church, The Toledo Municipal Courts Building, Toledo Family Court Center, Lourdes University Franciscan Life Center, several libraries and fire stations in Lucas County and many residential dwellings. He had a real talent for listening to and learning the needs and wishes of his clients and coming up with a design that exceeded their expectations. He was also appointed to the Panel of ArbitratorsAmerican Arbitration Association where he arbitrated construction related cases.

Joe’s life was driven by his faith, family and service to others. While raising his five children and building his career, he was a very active member at St. Joseph’s Church and School serving on the Parish Council in various roles including council president, school board member, usher, Lay Minister or wherever his help was needed. He also founded the Father’s Club at Notre Dame Academy and was its first president in the mid ‘70s as well as being a member of St. Francis DeSales’ Knights of the Round Table.

In 1987, Joe became a member of the Toledo Serra Club and held various officer roles including the office of president from 1993-1995. He was also a past District Governor.

As a “Notre Dame Man” Joe passionately followed the Notre Dame football and basketball teams.

He is survived by his beloved children, Susan, Mark (Eileen), Matt and Marie (Joe) Iozzo; grandchildren Jessica and Ryan; brother-in-law Jim Hayes, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa, son Joseph Paul and sister Irene Hayes.

ProMedica Flower Hospital’s safe Autism workshops planned way to dispose of medications A series of workshops has been designed 22 complete books of the New Testament.

National Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, Oct. 27. To help promote safe disposal of prescription medications, ProMedica Flower Hospital announced the placement of a MedSafe bin in the hospital’s first floor elevator lobby. A MedSafe is a receptacle which community members may place unused or expired medications in for safe and environmentally friendly disposal. The placement of the MedSafe is the result of a ProMedica community service initiative aimed at improving medication safety within the communities they serve.

Specifically, the danger of unused pain medications or other hazardous meds such as sedatives falling into the hands of a minor or other family member too often leads to accidental overdoses or death. The new MedSafe will help community members dispose of these products without the worry of environmental contamination as well.

To use the MedSafe, simply open the top door and place the medications inside and then close the door. The medications are then deposited into a bin that is secure and cannot be accessed. When the bin is full, pharmacists will close and seal the receptacle and send it off for destruction. For security,

the bin is bolted to the ground, and there is a camera that monitors the bin as well.

Drugs that have been prescribed or are over the counter may be placed in the bin, including: · Pills, tablets, and capsules · Ointments, creams and lotions · Powders · Liquid medications in quantities smaller than 4 oz.

There are a few limitations as to what should be placed into the bin, including: · Any illegal or illicit drugs · Aerosol spray cans · Alcohol or hydrogen peroxide · Needles, syringes, or sharps containers · Liquids in quantities more than 4 oz. · Trash · Batteries · Thermometers · Chemicals · Durable Medical Equipment (DME) supplies

New food bank opens for cats/dogs The one year anniversary for the Lucas County Pit Crew’s community outreach program, called Humane Toledo, is approaching and they are celebrating by announcing the opening of their new food bank on Nov. 1. LCPC will continue to bring food out into the community during its outreach events, but will be adding the food bank as an additional resource for dog and cat lovers in Lucas County.
