In a unanimous vote at the Sept, 13 board meeting, the SACIC endorsed the 0.8 mill levy for The Olander Park System on the ballot this November. “The Olander Park System has provided natural, recreational, educational and historical benefits to the community since 1958 and is a hallmark of the Sylvania area,” said President John Healey of Miller-Danberry Commercial Realtors. “It helps drive this community to be a great place for people to live, work and play. Additionally, it makes our community unique and attractive to any business considering relocating or starting out in the Sylvania City and Township area.”

The ballot measure would provide funding for the next five years, and bring in $1,115,000 in revenue annually to the park district.

Households valued at $100,000 would contribute $28 a year to the TOPS operating budget, while those valued at $150,000 would provide $42 a year. The money collected would be used to fund full operations beginning in 2018 plus allow for some much-needed

maintenance and upgrades at the busiest parks.

TOPS has worked through the years to stretch public money as far as possible by bringing over $2.5 million in grants to support projects since 2002 and $45,000 in donations over 10 years. Additionally, during that time, the park district has grown from two to six parks, with 150 acres of improved wildlife habitat, five miles of paved trails added to the regional bike facilities, as well as six major annual community programs. Recently TOPS also began asking for community feedback on its master plan, as the new levy will help fund this plan’s approved projects over the next 1015 years. “The Olander Park System, lake and prairie, are the jewels of Sylvania. Serving both the City’s and Township’s walkers, bikers, picnickers, swimmers and children’s fishing derby,” added Mr. Healey. “We just wouldn’t be Sylvania without it. We HAVE to support Olander.”

“Hot Head Burritos is a fast-casual venue with many choices of freshly prepared dishes including burritos or bowls. Guests are invited to build their burrito or bowl by selecting a fiber: rice, beans, peppers and onions; a protein: chicken, beef or pork, spicy or plain, or taco meat; a salsa: pico, corn, Roja, Verde or wild; and add chopped onions, jalapeno or banana peppers. We also offer tacos, quesadillas, and more. We make our own pico and corn salsa,” Mrs. Duschl explained. “You can then top off your meal of choice with a variety of sauces to compliment your own taste. Our most popular sauces include our proprietary Hot Head Sauce, and Sweet Habanero.”

The Duschls plan to have a staff of 30 on board at the opening, which they anticipate to be the end of October.

Ribbon cut to officially open Fit Body Boot Camp

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Sept.

30 to officially open the new Fit Body Boot Camp at 6819 W. Central Ave. Personal trainer and certified nutritionist, C.J. Tayler, opened the workout center on July 24.

“I was looking for ways to reach more people than the one-on-one basis that I had been doing as a physical trainer,” Tayler related.

“A co-worker opened a Fit Body Boot Camp and I really liked the concept. I decided that this would be an ideal business for us. I wanted to introduce this concept in northwest Ohio.”

“I found this space, which is ideal for us.

There is great exposure on a very busy road. We are also very close to the expressway, making our location very convenient for those who participate in our program,” Tayler added.

Duke Wheeler of Reichle Klein was the listing agent and handled the lease for the 2,800 square feet of space.

According to Tayler, participants commit to either a six-, 12- or 18-month program. “One of the three other trainers or I meet with each individual to learn what his or her goals are. We

encourage each participant to keep a food log and we discuss nutrition programs to develop specific meal plans customized for each participant,” Tayler stated. “While we do oneon-one sessions with each participant, we hold 30-minute group high energy, high intensity, interval training Monday through Saturday.

Each day we have a different format and introduce a new exercise each week.”

There are 38 scheduled groups that meet from 5:45 to 10:30 a.m. and from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Monday through Friday and from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday. “We encourage participants to workout three times a week but they can come more if they choose,” Tayler said. Groups range in size from 10 to 12 people to as many as 36 to 40. “And people of all fitness levels can

participate. We adapt the program for each individual,” he promised.

Ten years ago, Tayler weighed in at an overwhelming 360 pounds. He was not happy about that and made the decision to do something about his situation.

“I made changes in my life. I began to eat right and I started to exercise. I learned about nutrition and fitness and ended up changing careers while becoming 140 pounds lighter,” he offered. His new career centered on fitness and a healthy lifestyle as he became a personal trainer.

“Over the seven years as a trainer, I realized that I wanted to find a way to reach more people. I find I am able to do just that with the Fit Body Boot Camp,” he said.

For the past 40 plus years, Ismail Elali has been in the furniture business. Actually, he grew up in the business and chose to follow his family in the industry. “I love this business. I have always loved this business,” he said.

So it was no surprise that he recently opened his newest store, Monroe Furniture, 5466 Monroe St., even though his children urged him to retire. “But, I kept asking myself, ‘should I stay home?’ and the answer was a resounding no,” he chuckled.

He continued, “I wanted to open a store in the Sylvania area to serve the greater Toledo market with a unique and different furniture style. When I learned this building was available, I decided this would be a great location.”

After several months of renovation, Elali opened his newest store, which features furniture and accessories for the entire home.

“We have dining room, living room and bedroom furniture along with lamps, rugs, mirrors, pictures and even bedding,” he said.

“We offer financing, layaway and accept all credit cards,” Elali said that when he is selecting furniture,

he puts himself in his customers’ heads. “I have to think about what they will like and not what I like. And I try to have furniture in different price ranges to appeal to many different people in various stages of their lives,” he explained. “I learned a great deal from my father who emphasized good quality, price and service as the important elements for a successful business. He also said you must be honest and educate the customer about the difference in quality and put my experience in the customer’s hands so they can choose wisely.

These are all the things I have done in each store I have had.”

According to Elali, he has had stores in West Africa, Detroit and, most recently, Canada. He left his last business to work in the furniture industry for eight years. “I realized that I missed having my own store and made the move to come back,” he said. “When you love what you do, it’s like going to a party every day.

That’s what I tell my children when they ask me why I am still working.”

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Local residents honored at 20 Under 40 event Sylvania residents Prakash Karamchandani, co-founder and CEO of Balance Grille, and Whitney Rofkar, Director of Public Affairs at Thread Marketing Group, received a 2017 20 Under 40 Leadership Recognition Award on Sept.

28 at the 22nd annual 20 Under 40 ceremony. They were selected from a field of 120 candidates.

Karamchandani and his business partner, HoChan Jang, co-founded Balance Grille in 2010. It has grown to five locations, over 120 employees and $8 million in revenue.

Karamchandani was named to FastCasual.com’s Top 24 Fast Casual Executives, while his brand, Balance Grille, was ranked 33rd overall on the Top 100 Movers and Shakers list. Balance Grille was also ranked the number one Asian Fast Casual Concept in the country this year.

How to make your router run faster

One of the best things about Wi-Fi is the easy access it provides to the internet. But, if your network password is too simple, there could be Janis Weber more people tapping into it than you originally bargained for. Obviously, this isn’t something you want. Networks with weak passwords or no passwords can be accessed by almost anyone. Prevent this by first changing the password for your router. If you don’t know where to find it, a site called Router Passwords can help you locate the manufacturer’s default password. From there, create a password that is complex and difficult to guess.

Wi-Fi congestion is a problem in crowded neighborhoods or apartments. When too many people try to connect at the same time on the same Wi-Fi channel, connection speed

is significantly impacted. Connection may slow during peak hours, usually in the evening when everyone gets off work or on Sunday night. Fix this by selecting a different channel for your router. If you have a 2.4 gigahertz frequency router, there are usually 11 channels to choose from. Channels 1, 6 and 11 are recommended but try other channels to find a faster connection. Or buy a new 5 gigahertz router.

The typical way to access your router and settings is to type 168.192.1.1 into your browsers address line. If you are lucky enough to get in you will need a user name and password to access details like changing the channel that is being use. Check the suggestion above to search your manufactures name to see what default passwords are typical for them.

Sometimes empty cells work too.

Wi-Fi routers are not all created equal. “AC” routers are a step up from the older “B” and “G” models and even "N" models. They have more features and offer better performance. If you’re shopping for a new router, that’s what you want to look for. AC routers have a maximum spectral bandwidth of around 8 x 160MHz, compared to the 4 x 40MHz standard of N routers. In other words, the increased bandwidth allows more data to be transmitted without slowing down.

Olander Park plans big changes

The Olander Park System is looking forward to some changes in 2018. The 5 to10 Year Master Plan, drafted earlier this year, using funds from the levy being voted on in November, will see four of the major parks updated and renovated.

“This plan will help to budget in the future, and will help our community, board and staff know where we are going,” said Erika Buri, executive director of The Olander Park System.

The Milton Olander Park is a target of a large portion of these changes. The plan aims to reorganize what has been called “a hodgepodge of amenities and styles” into a more unified system in the park. The North Playground will be expanded with more equipment and a durable ground surface, while a large lakeside dock will provide more space for fishing on the lake. New walking paths will branch away from the existing roadways, keeping cars and pedestrians at a safe distance for walkers to better enjoy the park.

New paths and boardwalks will be added to the Sylvan Prairie Park, extending the current

trail systems further into the park interior.

Where soils are unfavorable for park restoration toward the center of the park, a new nature center will be built, serving as both an educational center and a trailhead for many of the park's paths.

Fossil Park is also scheduled to receive a few new features. A large open-air shelter overlooking the quarry, and a fossil-themed playground top off the master plan’s changes for this area.

Whetstone Park will be split into three subspaces. A large open-air shelter in the northwest corner will be designed for large community events, while at the other end, picnic benches and charcoal grills will be added for family gatherings. The central playground will be expanded and refurbished.

One common theme of all the changes in each park is an added emphasis on local vegetation. In each park’s plan, prairies and large swaths of land will be used to grow and tend to local wildflowers.

If the levy passes in November, the park system will begin work in 2018, starting with the western walking path and the children's play area in Olander Park, and the sledding hill at Sylvan Prairie Park.

Sometimes the easiest fixes are right there under our noses. Routers are not designed to transmit signals over long distances, so there may be hot spots and dead zones in your home. Brick walls and multiple floors are often obstacles. This is like a radio wave that is sending out a signal and the further away you are the less signal you will get. Perhaps your Netflix on the TV is too far from the router.

You will need a booster. Once you’ve identified the problem areas in your home, you have a few options available. One option is to purchase a Wi-Fi extender that can boost the range of your router’s transmission. Wi-Fi extenders range in price from around $20$120, depending on the features included in the model. However, a mid-range extender should work just fine. If you can move the router to the center of your environment, you will be much happier. Routers come in varied powers thus the signal goes further. If your router is over 10 years old, replace it.

THE ITALIAN GARDENER Yes, this is indeed the last gardening column for this season, and I will be heading off to the Unemployment Office this next week to file accordingly (watch the rumors fly). But it is somewhat sad, really, Rick Cozza because it means that the growing season is just about wrapped-up as we move into the last half of October.

So, let’s talk a bit about the end of the season. In actuality, the shrubs and trees have indeed wrapped up their above-ground work for the season, with only the dropping of leaves remaining. But they will be busily and invisibly working underground for months hence.

Here’s where we come in.

Roots will be growing and taking in nutrients for the winter until the ground freezes in January, so fertilize trees and shrubs when the leaves fall. A plant with good winter stores in the roots has a better chance of winter hardiness. And put a layer of mulch (2-3”) around planting beds in fall as well, since it lessens the chance of freeze damage to roots if we have a bad winter (sorry!). It also keeps the ground from freezing/thawing with the variable winter temperatures of early and late winter.

But don’t do what many inexperienced lawn guys do when they are asked to mulch, namely create ‘mulch volcanoes’ around each tree, building the mulch up into mounds around the trunk. Ouch! It does not do the tree any good, and is likely to eventually rot the bark. Keep mulch a few inches back from the trunks.

into your planting beds, think again! It prevents air from reaching the roots, keeps the soil underneath slimy and sticky, and very much prevents, not encourages, root growth.

In short. . . DON’T USE IT! And, on top of the weed barrier, the weed seeds germinate anyway. I have seen shrubs without the barriers grow much more readily than those with. As Bruce Willis said in many of his movies . . . “Bad idea!” Yes, you may have to weed, but your expensive plants will perform better and live longer.

So, as we have said over these past few weeks, clean up old material to prevent rotting of perennials and grasses under the snow cover during the winter. Fertilize all beds after the leaves fall this month. Put on a light layer of mulch, if needed. Don’t prune anything that blooms in the spring (you will be cutting off flower buds). Don’t prune anything now, since the plant will want to respond by budding out, and you are likely to have some winterkill anyway. Leave your Hydrangeas, grasses, other shrubs for winter interest, and prune in spring/summer depending on bloom time.

Buy apples, pumpkins, plant spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils, give your lawn the good, heavy fertilizing that will cause it to spring back in April. Take a good look at your trees when the leaves fall this month, and see if they need some professional care (before the ice brings them down on your car or roof).

Take a walk through the neighborhood, if you don’t regularly, and see what your neighbors have done to their yards since you last walked the block. If your yard can’t hold a candle to theirs, spend some time this winter with library books on landscaping. You’d be surprised how the years make your old, tired landscape older and tireder (I make ‘em up as I go).

Retired and need a hobby? Do some winter reading and vow to become a more creative gardener in 2018. If I can entice our publisher with enough flattery over the winter to get her to feel sorry for me, I’ll see you in the spring.

JamiLynn Fox of the JamiLynn Fox Allstate Insurance Agency has opened a second office at 5415 Secor Rd. Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson and Toledo City Councilwoman, Evonne Harper, District Four Representative, helped Fox and her agents cut the ribbon to officially open the new office.

“I was encouraged by Allstate to open this office,” Fox acknowledged. “This is an underserved area and Allstate wanted a successful agent with a track record to open this office. “I had two high-producing Allstate agencies in New York before I relocated to northwest Ohio five years ago and the company knew I could do the job.”

Along with the ribbon cutting, guests enjoyed hamburgers and hot dogs, fresh popped corn, sodas, entertainment by

Caveman & Randy and the opportunity to win prizes. Best Friends Forever Rescue volunteers were available to talk about their agency and showcase dogs ready for adoption. Fox and her staff offered “Quotes for a Cause” during the grand opening festivities. Best Friends received $10 for each insurance quote that was made during the grand opening celebration.

In addition, Fox recently expanded her staff.

Tina Wagenhauser Back Alley Gallery I have always loved art. I began drawing at age 5. I love to draw people and express their emotions. I had decided that art would be a hobby until my oldest son died in a car accident on his way to work. He was 19 years old. After that you re-evaluate your life. At first, I used my art as a healing therapy but I was convinced to take it a little further. I finally displayed my work, which scared me to death. My work was well received and it was a very positive experience. I found a way to express what I had going on inside and found some sense of peace.

I do many commissioned portraits. Some portraits are of people's loved ones that have passed on. That truly motivates me. I feels like I'm doing something meaningful to help. Portraits are a wonderful way to honor and also remember the ones we love.

Leaf Collection

The full complement of Sylvania Township road department workers have begun the annual process of collecting leaves raked, blown or otherwise brought to the curb of properties.

Leaf collection will continue until the township completes its last cycle, covering 174 miles of roadway beginning Dec. 1.

Residents again this year will be able to track progress by going to the township website and locating a map divided into grids. Locate the property you're interested in and call the township leaf-collection hot line at 419-517-1620. A recording, updated daily, will inform you where collection has taken place and where crews are expected to be working next.

Rob Nash, manager of the road department, said a strict schedule is difficult to maintain because when the most leaves will fall can't be well predicted and because rain and snow can delay efforts to pick up the leaves. “Collecting a pile of dry leaves is a lot easier than when that pile is soggy with rain, and sometimes frozen in places,� he said.

Some property owners have begun to make the chore a little easier on the crews by using a mulching mower and simply mowing over the fallen leaves to provide nutrients to their lawns over the winter.

Several studies have found it is a beneficial way of dealing with fallen leaves as well as lawn enrichment.

There are four active local candidate races underway this year. Five attorneys are running for Sylvania Municipal Court Judge to replace the retiring Judge M. Scott Ramey. Five candidates are running for three seats on Sylvania City Council, including three incumbents. Five candidates are running for two seats on the Sylvania Township Board of Trustees, including two incumbents, and city residents do vote for the Trustees. Five candidates are running for three seats on the Sylvania Board of Education, including two incumbents.

He said he was pleased with the increase in attendance at the second event and hopes to see that increase continue.

Chief Carroll said policing is a job made much easier and more efficient when the community actively supports the department. “We are fortunate to have such a supportive community here in Sylvania Township. These get togethers are an attempt to strengthen that relationship and have a coffee as a way of saying thanks,� he said.

Chief Carroll and other members of the department will be on hand to discuss policing issues or maybe the prospects for the Buckeyes or Wolverines this season.

Halloween Trick or Treating

Motorists are likely to see a fair mixture of super heroes and princesses on the neighborhood streets of Sylvania Township between 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.

That's the time period for Halloween trick or treating recently approved by the township trustees. John Zeitler, township administrator,said those hours coincide with the hours of the city of Sylvania.

Drivers out around that time are asked to be extra vigilant for youngsters getting treats. Police will be patrolling neighborhoods to keep our children safe.

Sylvania Township trustees have approved zoning changes which establish a single zoning for two adjoining parcels at Meijer Drive and Boulder Lane.

The Meijer parcel has a 9,100 sq. ft. office building and had been zoned for restricted industrial use as was the undeveloped Boulder site.

Trustees approved a change in zoning to professional/business office for both sites.

The township planning office recommended approval as had both the county planning commission and the township zoning commission.

With the change in zoning, the owner intends to combine the parcels and construct a second office on the Boulder lot with an addition to join the two buildings.

Percentum Zoning Change

The Sylvania Township zoning commission has recommended a zoning change which, if approved by the township trustees, will allow for a villa-style apartment complex of 66 units proposed for the 3200 and 3300 blocks of Percentum.

The rezoning to a planned unit development had also been recommended for approval by the Lucas County Plan Commission.

Several residents of the area spoke against the proposal, citing the loss of green space, increased traffic, and what they said was periodic low water pressure in the area.

Mary Himmelein, chairman of the commission, told people at the meeting that members of the commission were sensitive to their concern, but the commission's job was to determine if the zoning change was appropriate based on zoning regulations and the township's land use plan.

I encourage all residents of Sylvania to learn about the candidates and the property tax issues, including The Olander Park System levy, and use that knowledge to cast their votes directing the future of Sylvania. Local elections often hinge on just a few votes, and with so many candidates on the ballot this year, your vote will be as important as ever! I encourage all residents to get out and vote on Nov. 7!

Tom Creque, a member of the commission, noted that an earlier proposal for the area which had been recommended for approval was for a four-story building with 127 units. That request for rezoning was denied by Sylvania Township trustees..

A different proposal, which the Lucas County Plan Commission had recommended for approval, would have added 112 apartments to the area. That plan was never forwarded to the township.

The units for the current plan will be about 1,600 sq.ft. including garages and are likely to rent for about $1,400 per month.

The plans submitted with the request to change zoning show villas arranged around a U-shaped roadway connecting at two places to Percentum.

As proposed, there would be five 8-unit buildings, three 6-unit buildings, and two 4unit buildings.

The Sylvania Township commission staff recommended approval of the request.

Their report noted that the proposed development is compatible with surrounding residential and commercial uses and with the township land use plan.

The staff did note that coverage of the area by structures, driveways, etc. must not exceed 40 percent. The current plan shows coverage of 40.6 percent. The staff recommended a waiver be approved for the difference.

The recommendation for the waiver is based in part on the fact that plans show about 20 percent of the property will have usable open space and township regulations would require that only 15 percent be provided.

The issue is scheduled to be heard by the Sylvania Township trustees at a meeting Nov. 8 at 6 p.m.

Sylvania–Then and Now

This next house is 118 years old and was built in 1899. It is on the Sylvania Area Historical Society’s list of structures 100 years old or older, which qualifies it for a date plaque. In 1898 Willis R. and Ada G. Brimacomb Eley purchased the property from Hattie Rockenstyre. By the next year they constructed this home, and lived here until he died in 1921 and she died in 1951.

They had one child, born in 1892, and named him Kent C. Eley.

Willis Eley was Sylvania’s local blacksmith who operated a shop in downtown Sylvania until he died at a young age in 1921. Willis was also elected to the Sylvania Village Council from 1897 to 1900. Records show that in 1919 he had retired from the blacksmith business and went to work for the Toledo & Western Railway, as a car inspector. In 1921, just before he died, he and his son went into business together repairing automobiles.

Willis and Ada’s son, Kent, married Frances M. Lathrop in 1915. After Willis died in 1921, Kent, with daughter-in-law Frances and their child Jane, moved into this house to live with Ada. Kent worked as a private electrical contractor and is said to have installed the electrical lines in just about every building in Sylvania from the 1930s through the 1960s.

There was a large barn in the rear of this house, but it was destroyed by fire in the 1930s. Kent Eley built the current garage on the property shortly after the fire, and in 1952 obtained a building permit to construct an addition to the rear of that garage.

Ada Brimacomb Eley lived here until she died in 1951. She had transferred the house into her son’s name in 1939.

Kent and Frances’ only child, Jane, was born in 1918 and at the age of 3 came to live in this house with her grandmother, father and mother. In 1965 the house was transferred into Jane L. Eley’s name.

Francis Lathrop Eley lived in this home until she died in 1971, and her husband, Kent, lived here until he died in 1978.

Jane Eley lived here until 2001, when she was 83 years old, and was then moved to a rest home. At that time she sold her family home, which had been in the Eley name for 102 years. Jane died in 2013 at the age of 95 years old. Her obituary notice said that she worked for the city of Sylvania water department, then the General Telephone Company, and then 32 years at WSPD Radio, where she served as a receptionist in their traffic department. After Jane retired she used to have private tea parties in this house where she would serve lunch or dinner to groups of women for a small fee.

Today this beautiful home is owned by Douglas A. Dymarkowski and Brenda Hartley.

Friday Night Lights Up Main Street

Strings of lights were lit between buildings in Downtown Sylvania during the Red Bird Art Walk. The Sylvania Chamber of Commerce fully funded the project and worked in partnership with the city of Sylvania and collaboratively with building owners JDRM Engineering, The Stansley Group, Unverferth Architecture, Reve Salon and Spa and Sylvan Studios.

Nick Dallas of Upside Brewing celebrated the one year anniversary during LocalFest with three beers: Low Smoke, a smoked beer, Meld, a New England style IPA and Hazy Blue, a blend of blueberries and blackberries.

He also introduced ‘Chunk O’ Pumpkin’ with an ‘ABV of 8.1%. Dallas said he had been home brewing for family and friends for a few years. It had been a fun hobby, and then he became more serious and started thinking about brewing at his family’s business, J & G Pizza Palace, which has essentially turned J & G into a brewpub. Mahalo Bake Shop specializes in spooky custom treats In a microwave safe bowl or double boiler, heat almond bark (according to package directions) until chocolate is melted.

Immerse each sandwich cookie into the melted chocolate. Carefully remove with a fork and tap on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. Place onto a waxpaper covered surface for drying and sprinkle with candy sprinkles.

Let dry until chocolate coating is hardened. Store at room temperature in an airtight container. Do NOT refrigerate.

BY JENNIFER RUPLE For frequent traveler Paula Adam, coming up with a name for her virtual bakery was a piece of cake.

Memories from a firsttime trip to Hawaii that she and her husband, Tom, shared Jennifer Ruple 14 years ago, provided Adam with the inspiration to name her Sylvania Townshipbased business, Mahalo Bake Shop. Mahalo is the Hawaiian word for thank you. “The thing that struck me the most about Hawaiians is that they are such gracious and kind people,” recalled Adam. “Many times, when you bake for someone, it’s a way of showing your appreciation for them and a way to say thank you,” she added.

Adam began thinking about starting a bakery five years ago after she baked $1,000 (in retail value) worth of desserts for a benefit dinner for a friend who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “We sold out in less than two hours,” she commented.

Two years later, Adam launched Mahalo Bake Shop, specializing in home-baked,

Toffee Apple Blondies 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup whole-wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup brown sugar, packed 2 eggs 4 tablespoons dark corn syrup 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 granny smith apples (peeled, cored and cut into ½ inch dice (about 1 ½ cups) ½ cup toffee bits 1 ⁄ 3 cup pecans, finely-chopped (optional) In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Continue cooking and swirling occasionally until the butter turns nut brown. Pour into a large bowl and let cool slightly.

Heat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9” x 13” pan with nonstick spray.

In a small bowl, whisk together both flours, baking powder and salt and set aside.

Stir the brown sugar into the melted butter to combine. Add the eggs, corn syrup and vanilla, stirring until well combined.

Stir in the flour mixture to combine, then add the apple and half of the toffee bits.

Scrape the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading evenly. Sprinkle with remaining toffee bits and (optional) pecans.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes.

Let cool and cut into squares or triangles.

Store in an airtight container.

Captain Richard Phillips, the real-life inspiration for the 2013 movie, Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, was the featured speaker at the Camp Miakonda 100th Anniversary Gala, on Oct. 5, at the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion. The author of “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea,” shared with guests his five-day ordeal at sea as a hostage after Somali pirates hijacked his U.S. cargo ship, the MV Maersk Alabama. Captain Phillips said he learned many lessons of leadership from his experiences as a former Cub Scout and Boy Scout. “Scouting gave me a foundation and a direction of where to go,” he recalled. “I learned to be prepared, many leadership lessons and the beliefs that you are much stronger than you know and that the only true failure is when you give up and quit.

Scouting taught me to respect myself and my country. Without a sense of community, you cannot solve the world’s problems.”

Another important lesson he learned and lives by is to hope for the best but plan for the worst. “We don’t normally think about what’s around the corner,” he stated.

“As a captain, all you deal with are problems. My job is to come up with answers to an endless supply of questions and to become comfortable with uncertainty in difficult times.” On April 8, 2009, he and his crew appreciated his mind continually being in, as he describes, ‘problem solving mode’, when Somali pirates boarded their ship. “They took my ship—FAIL. After a series of events, I became a hostage on a lifeboat with three pirates as their human shield—FAIL. I was the first captain of a U.S ship to be taken hostage in 200 years. I did not consider this a good thing. We were well-trained and I knew getting the pirates off the ship was the best course of action. I kept thinking that the only true failure is giving up so I kept looking for baby steps to survive. I also

clung to the belief that I would do everything I could to save my crew. A crew is there for the ship. A captain there for the crew. A measure of a person is how they overcome adversity and attitude determines the result.”

The U.S. Navy arrived at the scene and negotiations began between the pirates and the captain of the USS Bainbridge. Captain Phillips saw an opportunity to escape. “One of the pirates thought he needed two hands to urinate off the back of the boat and put down his AK-47. I jumped out of the lifeboat and started swimming toward the destroyer, but the pirates went after me and hauled me back on the boat,” he recalled.

Captain Phillips then endured numerous “fake executions.” “The pirates would tell me that my family was going to miss me when I was gone,” recalled the Captain.

“They would put a gun to my head during their ritual execution game and I would hear click, click, click, 90 times. I kept thinking of my family. I never prayed for rescue, but I prayed for the patience to wait and to stay calm. I have found that when you vow never to quit, inevitably something happens to make the situation better.”

Thankfully things did improve but only after a Navy SEAL sniper believed Captain Phillips was in “imminent danger” after seeing a pirate hold a AK-47 to his back.

The standoff finally ended on April 12, Easter Sunday. The Captain was eventually reunited with his wife, Andrea, and their two children, Mariah and Danny. “I am grateful for my family. The experience gave me a greater appreciation for the things that were in front of me all the time. I will also be eternally grateful for the SEALs. I still choke up when I hear the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’ When Americans risk their lives to rescue you, that anthem becomes much more than a song. I am also thankful that God answered my prayer. I don’t make deals with God, but I asked for the ability to be my best when I needed to be. I think my prayer was answered.”

Clifford Bentley

Clifford Bentley, 84, passed away peacefully Oct. 5, 2017, at Ebeid Hospice Residence, Sylvania, Ohio. Clifford was born in Freeburn, KY. on Dec. 15, 1932. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, and son Clifford Darrell. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and siblings Herman (Betty Jo) Bentley, Phyllis Murphy, Cora Sue (Sidney) Allen, Christine (Robert) Keen, Betty (John) Spence. He is also survived by his daughters Donna Jones, Carol (Donald) Baldwin, Kathy (Kevin) Crowell, Debra (Johnny) Mitchell and Shelly (David) Rife. He has 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Diana Keshari

Diana Carol (Wilson) Rahimi Keshari, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away Sept. 29, 2017, at The Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. She was born Feb. 4, 1942, in Hannibal, Mo., to Edwin Lee Wilson and Goldie Mae (Webster) Wilson.

She is survived by Hossein Rahimi Keshari, her loving husband of almost 60 years.

Diana was a traditional homemaker and excelled at providing a warm and caring home for her husband and three daughters over the years, first in Missouri, then in Ohio and Connecticut and finally back in Ohio again. A self-taught seamstress, she created many matching outfits for her daughters in their

early years. She also enjoyed various handicrafts, reading, shopping and spending time with friends, especially having lunch with her best friend Jean Pirooz.

Diana’s greatest joy in recent years was spending time with her five grandchildren and watching them grow up. Her joyous and loving presence will be deeply missed by them and all of her family.

Diana was predeceased by her parents, her daughter Michelle Lynn (Keshari) Kubischke, sisters Dolores Gottman, Donna Russell, Dorothy Ragland and Doris Jean Mowen and brother David Wilson. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters Lalet (Keshari) Garner of Columbus, Ohio, and Cindy Keshari (Bill) Steele of Ottawa Hills, Ohio, and grandchildren Kimberly Garner, San Antonio, Texas; Brian Garner, Columbus, Ohio; Benjamin Steele, Ottawa Hills, Ohio; and, Michael and Grace Kubischke of Swansea, S. C. Diana is also survived by her sisters Dorita Chabak of Decatur, Ill. and Deb Adam of Linn Creek, Mo., and brothers Daniel Wilson and Dennis Wilson of Hannibal, Mo. The family deeply appreciates the heartfelt care Diana received from multiple providers at both ProMedica Flower and Toledo Hospitals during her final days; especially that received from Dr. Sangiv Josh, whose compassion reflected the practice of medicine as a true calling.

Roy E. Knaggs, 76, of Ottawa Lake, Mich., died unexpectedly Oct. 5, 2017. Born Nov. 4, 1940, in Ottawa Lake, Roy is the son of Ludy and Lucy (LaPointe) Knaggs. Roy graduated from Bedford High School and retired from General Motors Powertrain. Roy married Faye (Albain) Knaggs on July 7, 1962, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, and they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Roy enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, golfing, walking the parks, coaching, watching his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, camping, hunting, travelling, volunteering at the church, bird-watching, bowling and spending time with his family and friends. He was a hard-working, inventive, creative fix-it kind-of-guy. As a former athlete, he played baseball, softball, and was a former high school record-holding pole-vaulter.

Roy is survived by his wife, Faye (Albain) Knaggs, his four children Richard (Carrie) Knaggs, Traci (Leticia) Knaggs, Tina (Jeff) Kiefer, and Kevin (Sarah) Knaggs, his ten grandchildren Keena, Mariah, Natasha, Joshua, Madeline, Ella, Taylor, Jordan (David), Dakota and Jesse, his three brothers Arnold (Genni) Knaggs, Melvin (Mary) Knaggs and Howard (Bonnie) Knaggs and his two sisters Letha Holup, and Joan Young as well as in-laws Bernard Brosamer, Gloria (Lenhart) Knaggs, and Gerri (Green) Knaggs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ludy and Lucy (LaPointe) Knaggs, five brothers Raphael, Paul, Robert, Donald, and Larry and six sisters Mary, Anna, Alice Marie, Rose, Jean Francis, and Donna.

Kathleen Maidlow

Kathleen “Kathy” Ann Myers Maidlow of Sylvania, Ohio, age 77, passed away peacefully Oct. 4, 2017. Kathy was born in Lima, Ohio, and graduated from Lima Senior High School. Kathy attended Bowling Green State University where she earned a bachelor of science degree in speech and hearing therapy.

An avid swimmer, Kathy was the president of the BGSU “Swan Club” and performed as an accomplished synchronized swimmer throughout her college days. After college, Kathy moved to Dayton, Ohio, in 1962 where she began her career with the Brookfield schools. There she met a dashing young Xerox salesman, her future husband and love of her life, James “Jim” Maidlow. After two years of courtship, they were married and blessed with three sons and 37 years of marriage. Kathy and Jim made their home in Sylvania, Ohio, where Kathy worked as a speech therapist for the Lucas County and Sylvania schools for 33 years. Kathy was known for her kindness and generosity and was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In addition to being patient and friendly with everyone she met, Kathy was known for her great conversational skills and love of sipping a good margarita with family and friends. She also volunteered for the Christ Child Society and helped further their mission of helping children. In the last 13 years Kathy thrived as a devoted and proud “Grammy” and “Nai Nai” to her six grandchildren. Kathy is survived by her sons Michael (Lesley) Maidlow of Sylvania, Ohio, Mark (Cate) Maidlow of Oak Park, Ill., and Daniel (Stephanie) Maidlow of Grosse Pointe, Mich., and cherished by her grandchildren Lilli, Valerie, Blake, Audrey, Gracie and Reece.

Robert R. Rising, 83, of Ottawa Lake, Mich., passed away Sept. 29, 2017, at ProMedica Flower Hospital. Bobby was employed for more than 44 years with Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.

Gary Williams Sr.

It is with great sadness that the family of Gary Williams Sr., announces his passing on Oct. 6, 2017 due to complications from surgery at the age of 79 years. He was surrounded by loved ones as he escaped his earthly bonds Gary will be lovingly remembered by his children Tina Fondren (Pat), Gary Williams Jr (Chrissy), Jeff Williams (Linda), Sean Curtin (Kimberly) and Shannon Secrist (Kevin) as well as his siblings Keith Williams, Shirley Lane, Dennis Williams (Charlotte) and Gerald Williams (Alice). Gary will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Ed, Bradley, Dustin, Jordan, Ashley, Erika, Amanda, Jessica, Jeff, Sophia, Riley, Cassidy, Kevin Jr. and Christian as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

Gary was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Kathy, parents Helen (Terrian) Engle, Keith Williams, sister-in-law Doris Williams, brother-in-law Gerald Lane, son Kevin Curtin and great-granddaughter Jaidyn Fondren Gary was a native of Sault Ste. Marie, lived in Chino, Calif., and finally the Toledo, Ohio, area. He was a construction services entrepreneur, always working hard to provide for his family. Gary was raised Catholic, but truly developed his faith while a member of the St. Joseph Parish. He worked as a volunteer for the parish in many roles. He sought to pass on his faith and love of Jesus to all who knew him, especially his children and his grandchildren.

Gary had a great sense of humor and was always playing little tricks on everyone. You could count on a phone call where he would pretend to be someone else. His greatest legacy is his love for his family. He loved to watch his family perform; whether it was a game, match or show. Gary truly enjoyed spending time with them and he wanted to ensure that they were loved and that they would in turn, pass on that love to others.

We will miss him dearly; however, we are comforted to know that he has been reunited with Kathy. Over the past year and a half he has missed her terribly and spoke of her often.

We are confident that the two of them are at the foot of Jesus praising and glorifying Him together.

It would provide crime victims with specific constitutional rights, including the right to be treated with fairness and respect for the victim’s safety, dignity, and privacy; to be notified about and present at proceedings; to be heard at proceedings involving release, plea, sentencing, disposition, or parole of the accused; to a prompt conclusion of the case; to reasonable protection from the accused; to be notified about release or escape of the accused; to refuse an interview or deposition at the request of the accused; and to receive restitution from the individual who committed the criminal offense. Marsy’s Law is named after Marsy Nicholas, a California college student who was stalked and killed by her ex-boyfriend in 1983. One week after her death, her mother and brother Henry walked into a grocery store where they saw the accused murderer. The family had no idea that he had been released on bail. Dr. Henry T. Nicholas, brother of Marsy, is the key backer and proponent of Marsy’s Law. Marsy’s Law initiatives have been passed in California, Illinois, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota (see https://marsyslaw.us/about-marsyslaw/marsysstory/).

There is already language addressing rights of crime victims in the Ohio constitution which voters passed in 1994. However, Marsy’s Law would replace it with language that, as described above, would expand the existing rights of victims and would establish new rights for victims.

Issue 2: The Ohio Drug Price Relief Act Will appear on the ballot as ‘STATE ISSUE 2: To require state agencies to not pay more for prescription drugs than the federal Department of Veterans Affairs and require state payment of attorney fees and expenses to specific individuals for defense of the law’ Prohibits the state from buying any prescription drug from a drug manufacturer for a price over the lowest price paid for the drug by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). (Proposed by Initiative Petition) A YES vote means approval of the Act. A NO vote means disapproval of the Act. If approved, the proposed Act will take effect immediately after Election Day. League Explanation of Issue 2: The Ohio Drug Price Relief Act Issue 2 would limit the amount the state and state agencies could pay for prescription drugs. This Act is designed to restrict the amount that any state agency could pay for drugs, tying it to the price paid by the VA. The VA negotiates drug prices with companies and typically pays 20 to 24 percent less than other agencies for prescription drugs. Specifically, it would forbid state agencies to enter into any purchasing agreement with drug manufacturers unless the net cost of the drug is the same or less than that paid by the VA. State agencies would not be allowed to pay more than the VA pays for a particular medication. These state agencies include, but are not limited to, the Ohio Department of Aging, the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio Department of Insurance, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, and the Ohio Department of Medicaid (the program for people with low incomes or disabilities).

The bill will only impact those who receive drugs paid for by the state, not those with any other type of coverage. If adopted, the proposed statute would affect only those associated with the above mentioned state agencies - roughly four million Ohioans. The Act would not apply to those who use private insurance, Medicare, or other non-stateprovided coverage - approximately seven million Ohioans.

Judge, Sylvania Municipal Court Daniel T. Ellis Political Affiliation: The Judge is a NonPartisan position but I am Conservative. I vote for the individual, but I am a registered republican.

Bio: Dan Ellis is a long time active member of the Sylvania community. He and his wife, Dr. Christine Ellis, have raised five children in Sylvania over 28 years and all five are graduates of Sylvania Schools. As an active member of Epworth Methodist Church, Dan has participated in many activities including the Emmaus walk. He has also lead classes and presented to his church community on the topic of Opiate Addiction. Dan served many years as an assistant Boy Scout leader in Troop 254 and has been an Assistant Coach of the Sylvania Southview Mock Trial Team. Dan’s interest in community matters has led him to organize recent public presentations on Opiate Addiction and Domestic Violence as these are two primary challenges facing the Sylvania Municipal Court.

Community members also expressed grave concerns to Dan on these issues.

Ellis has substantial legal experience, having been in private practice over the last 30 years at all levels – Municipal,

Common Pleas, Federal and Appellate courts. Equally important, his experience is diverse. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants, individuals, small business and multinational corporations, championing equal justice for all under the law. He has also testified before Congress to defend American workers in the face of unfair competition from China.

Qualifications: 1. Substantial Experience as a trial lawyer in private practice; 30 years of courtroom experience trying cases in the Municipal, Common Pleas and Federal Courts throughout the State, including their conclusion in the Appellate Courts at the Ohio Supreme, the United States Federal District Courts and in various federal and state Courts of Appeals 2. Broad Experience in adjudicating and resolving cases; Represented plaintiffs and defendants, individuals, small businesses and multinational corporations, always championing equal justice for all under the law.

Sylvania Municipal Court Judge Chris McGowan

Plans for the office if elected: Municipal courts are uniquely situated as often a first court encounter. When elected, I will work to obtain the cooperation of the victim, police, prosecutor and defense, and community support agencies to help heal and transform all participants, relationships and the community at large with the resolution.

Sylvania City Council

Sylvania Voters have the difficult task of choosing a new Judge for Sylvania’s Municipal Court from five highly qualified and respected attorneys, all of whom are capable of serving our community in that Court. I am supporting Chris McGowan. Chris is unique among the candidates because of his extensive practice experience in the Municipal Courts of Lucas County. Chris clearly has more experience in the Municipal Court than any of the other candidates. Moreover Chris’s knowledge of the Municipal Court has allowed him to identify some very specific modifications to the sentencing, probation and administration practices of the Sylvania Municipal Court that will save Sylvania taxpayers significant cost, while fully protecting the public and preserving the rights of all those who come before the Court. Most voters don’t realize that the City of Sylvania subsidizes the Court operations, above the costs and fines collected by the Court, in an amount in excess of $875,000. As a 14 year Member of Sylvania City’s Council I have been frustrated in managing the Sylvania Municipal Court budget. I believe that Chris McGowan will prove to be a partner with the City to manage the Court’s budget and save money for Sylvania taxpayers.

I am supporting the re-election of the three incumbent Members of City Council. City Council has functioned smoothly and efficiently and served the needs of the City residents well over the time that Mary, Katie and Jason have served on Council. Mary Westphal has been an effective Member who has served as President of Council in recent years. Katie Cappellini has served as Chair of Council’s Parks and Forestry Committee and Jason Mishka has served as Chair of Council’s Utilities and Environment Committee. Both have been effective Members of Council who have played key roles in supporting the development of balanced budgets while remaining focused on maintaining the key City services that residents rely upon. In addition Katie and Jason stood with me in opposition to the massive tax increase sought by TARTA when TARTA had no long term strategic plan to improve service to the Sylvania Community. TARTA has vowed to pursue a tax increase again in the future and I am confident that Katie and Jason will critically evaluate any such request.

Bio: I am honored to be running for Judge of the Sylvania Municipal Court. In 27 plus years as a licensed attorney in good standing, I have represented both plaintiffs and defendants in many areas of the law. The focus of my career has been handling criminal and civil cases in all of the local Municipal Courts surrounding and including the Sylvania jurisdiction. Currently I maintain an active private practice and I believe that I have the qualifications required to serve as a Municipal Court Judge. I offer my experience, competency, and integrity, all of which I believe are worthy of this position.

As a married working father of two children, I am quite aware of the unique pressures that families face in today’s world. I am not running for this office just so I can have the title of Judge. I am running because I wish to serve the people of the city of Sylvania, Sylvania Township, Holland, and the surrounding jurisdictions in a meaningful capacity in the area of the law where I have spent most of my career.

Qualifications: I am a 1989 University of Toledo Law School Graduate. Prosecutor and Domestic Violence Advocate to streamline the court process for all parties involved. I would expand the use of the existing Mediation Program to reduce the number of formal court proceedings/costs. I would increase the use of home electronic monitoring at the defendant’s cost, and the use of detections such as the SCRAM bracelet and other electronic tethers to reduce costs and over-crowding of our jails.

Anthony P. Spinazze Political Affiliation: Republican Bio: Anthony has been practicing law since 2000 at the Law Office of Lydy & Moan, Ltd., in Sylvania and has been the managing partner since 2006. Anthony is licensed in Ohio and Michigan.

Qualifications: I am deeply rooted and in touch with the Sylvania community. For the past 17 years I have been a licensed attorney and have worked at the Law Offices of Lydy & Moan, Ltd., in Sylvania. My professional experience includes extensive Municipal Court practice. I have handled criminal cases, both as a contract prosecutor and a defense attorney. This has allowed me to see both sides of the issue from different perspectives. This experience will permit me to be fair and just in my judicial decisions and bring common sense to the bench.

Plans for the office if elected: If elected I will keep the following three items in mind in every decision: Family- My father was a barber and my mother stayed home with myself and two brothers. Our parents taught us the importance of family and hard work.

Therefore, as Judge I will keep families as a primary focus in dealing with the tough issues that families face.

Community-Strong families lead to strong communities. My responsibility is to make this community the best through supporting programs and laws that assist in supporting actions of the police, teachers, parents, and local agencies.

Safety- To raise a family and to be a thriving community it’s residents must be safe. The most important responsibility of officials is to use common sense and to promote the safety of those who elected them.

John Thebes Political Affiliation: Republican Bio: I graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School and received a BBA in Finance from the University of Toledo. I received my JD from the University of Toledo College of Law and have been engaged in private practice for the past 28 years, participating in over 75 jury trials including over 25 homicide trials. I presently reside in

Sylvania with my wife, Lisa, and three children. Also, we are active parishioners at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Qualifications: I have more significant trial experience than any of my opponents. That courtroom experience will serve me well as a judge. In 28 years as a trial attorney, I have participated in over 75 felony jury trials, including 25 homicide trials. I am certified as lead counsel in death penalty cases by the Ohio Supreme Court and routinely practice in the US District (Federal) Court. Finally, I regularly appear in municipal courts throughout Northwest Ohio including Sylvania Municipal Court. Also, I provide expert legal analysis to The Toledo Blade, WTOL, WTVG and WNWO. Political Affiliation: Independent Bio: Katie, her husband, Tom, and two children and have been residents of the City of Sylvania for over 15 years. Her son, Owen, graduated from Northview High school and her daughter, Grace, is a senior. Katie graduated from Northwestern University and has experience as a corporate executive as well as a small business owner. Her first campaign for Sylvania

City Council was run on a “Rock the Boat” theme.

Here are just a few of the initiatives that Katie has ‘rocked the boat’ with: 1) Formation of the Council Economic Development Sub-Committee. 2) Residents were surveyed on economic development issues. 3) The Sylvania River Trail was conceived as an economic driver and is being built in phases. 4) The SOMO district revitalization project, which included buying dilapidated riverfront properties for redevelopment, will be under construction this spring. 5) Safe Route to School studies were completed for all of the Sylvania Schools located in the city.

6) The sidewalk from the new Lucas County King Library to Sylvania Southview High School was completed.

7) As a SAJRD board member, she worked to add a top notch skateboard park to the recreation district.

Qualifications: I’ve worked hard over the last 10 years to bring vision to Sylvania City Council and was a founding member of the Council Economic Development subcommittee. I also serve on these council committees: Parks and Forestry (as chair), Zoning & Annexation, Buildings & Grounds, Employee & Community Relations. I’m passionate about making Sylvania the best it can be and am involved in the following community organizations: the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District, the Downtown Sylvania Association, the Sylvania

Chamber Welcoming Committee and the Sylvania Fall Festival committee.

Plans for the office if elected: If I’m re-elected, I plan to continue work on our downtown revitalization efforts.

We are at a tipping point in our economic development initiatives and big things are on the horizon. I want to be sure we are making smart zoning/ rezoning decisions. We should be encouraging young professionals to buy houses and start businesses in Sylvania. I can bring the unique perspective to the council of someone from that generation. I am a Sylvania homeowner and I am very committed to making sure taxpayer money is used wisely while also making sure the public services and schools that make our community so desirable are the best they can be. I am an Eagle Scout and I have private sector business experience that will help me to bring a common sense approach to government.

Plans for the office if elected: If elected I plan on helping to establish a more diverse city government that represents a larger group of people. My initial main focus will be public safety. As I’ve been talking to Sylvanians throughout this campaign, the most common issue I hear is the drug epidemic that is plaguing our region.

This issue needs to be addressed in an organized way with tangible measures of success. I also want to make sure

people who want to start businesses in Sylvania have all of the help they need and are not discouraged by government red tape. We need to make sure tax payer money is being used wisely while maintaining the public services we all expect. It is important for a trustee to not only attend the scheduled two meetings a month, but to represent the township by serving on boards outside of the township hall.

Plans for the office if elected: As a business owner in the technology industry, I have learned to find or use tools that can make my companies more effective. I have spent the better part of my life and all of my career working to make peoples jobs easier and more efficient. I will use my leadership skills and experience to help the township become more effective.

Bio: Greg grew up in Monclova attending St. John’s, then Purdue University where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. Greg moved back to the area and settled in Sylvania in 2003. Greg is married to Christine and has three children in Sylvania Schools. Greg is the president and owner of a civil engineering firm, Feller, Finch and Associates. Greg’s company is heavily involved in development in the Sylvania area.

Greg’s skill set as a civil engineer in the real estate market and a business owner makes him an ideal candidate for the School Board. Greg is currently on the Toledo Home Builders Association Board and was a past board member of Habitat for Humanity. Greg is a member of St. Joseph Church in Sylvania and is heavily involved in the Christ Renews His Parish program as a current team leader and the committee chairman.

Qualifications/statement: I am a civil engineer, a business owner and a parent with three kids in the schools. That skill set and perspective is needed on the board. The board has not had this skill set since John Crandall was on the board. No other candidate has this skill set.

She has been a member of the Board of Education for the last eight years, serving two years as vice-president and two years as president. She has been on the board of Sylvania Community Action Team for the past seven years, serving six years as vice-president. Throughout her tenure on the Board of Education she has been the board representative to the Academic Excellence Foundation, Sylvania Community Services and Sylvania Schools Parent Organization among other entities.

Qualifications: I have proudly served on the Board of Education for the last eight years (two years as Vice President and two years as President). I have also served on the Board of Sylvania Community Action Team (six as Vice President). As a family law attorney I have 17 years of experience negotiating positive outcomes for my clients. I am a graduate of Southview and the mother of two recent Northview graduates and I have been an active volunteer throughout their time in this district. Issue 1: Marsy’s Law or ‘Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights’

Issue 2: The Ohio Drug Price Relief Act

Pros: 1. This proposed law will increase the legal rights and privileges of victims.

2. Marsy’s Law would replace the 1994 Ohio Victims’ Rights Amendment, which victims’ rights advocates said has been unenforceable.

3. The proposed law would ensure that victims are informed when the accused offender is released from custody.

4. It will inform crime victims of their rights.

Cons: 1. The amendment would override state law, eliminating judges’ abilities to weigh the rights of victims and defendants.

2. Victims are already protected by 1994 Ohio Victims’ Rights Amendment in the constitution.

3. The amendment would allow crime victims to directly file an appeal, overstepping the decisions of prosecutors.

4. Victims could refuse to be interviewed or to turn over pertinent evidence or testimony.

PROPONENTS: Marsy’s Law for Ohio is leading the campaign in support of the initiative.

OPPONENTS: As of our publication deadline, no organized opposition has formed, however representatives from the legal profession have voiced concerns and may formalize their opposition. This Vote411 summary will be updated if and when an opposition campaign is announced.

Pros: 1. Drug costs are the main driver of rising health care cost. There is an urgent need to control costs while maintaining access to needed medications.

2. Too many Ohioans must choose between the basic necessities of life and paying for their medications.

3. There is an indirect benefit to taxpayers as the state would save an estimated $536 million per year on drugs. This could free up some substantial money that the state could use for other programs.

The League of Women Voters of Ohio, founded in 1920, is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Complementing it is the League of Women Voters of Ohio Education Fund that provides nonpartisan information and educational services to citizens.

The summaries of both ballot issues were prepared by the League of Women Voters of Ohio Education Fund. The pros and cons listed for each issue are abbreviated versions of the arguments put forward by the respective issue campaigns. The title listed for each issue is the official title assigned by the Ohio Ballot Board.

Kat Arndt has been an outstanding member of the Northview Band Program for four years. As one of this year’s senior field commanders, Kat has been a leader for the band. Kat has also been a member of Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Pep Bands and Pit Orchestra. She has played cello in the Concert Orchestra, sings Soprano in A Cappella Choir and has participated in multiple Honors bands, orchestras & OMEA festival events. Kat is also involved in Science Olympiad, Speech and Debate, and the 3D arts program.

Kat is the daughter of Matt and Tina Arndt.

Northview High School senior Jessica Aldrich competed in Twirling Unlimited’s regional baton twirling competition at Perrysburg High School. Jessica represented Northview in the Twirling Unlimited Regional Feature Twirler contest. Not only did Jessica compete against other regional high school majorettes, she competed against regional college majorettes and achieved a first-place win.

I am not the only one that misses trick-ortreating. As fun as it is to pass out candy or dress up for the halls of Notre Dame Academy, nothing quite tops the days parading around the neighborhood on a LIBBY STUPICA Halloween night. I remember walking until the weight of my candy-filled plastic jack-o-lantern basket sent me back to my house to sort and trade my bounty with my sister. There was something exciting about debuting my costume each year.

It allowed my creativity to show, like the year I dressed up as a mime and silently held out my basket in hopes of receiving candy despite not saying “trick-or-treat!” Below are some other Halloween memories shared by my friends: “My favorite Halloween costume was a hot dog in second grade. I used to love hot dogs but now I'm vegan.” -Vijay “When I was in third grade, I transformed a plastic bin by putting shoulder straps so it hung on my shoulders and I taped balloons on the outside. It was a pretty awesome Halloween bathtub costume if I do say so myself.” -Claire “Well, I was a total tomboy when I was little, and I insisted on my parents buying a boy's Spider-Man costume for Halloween and I used the same costume three years in a row.” -Zoe “A witch was my signature look up until I was nine. Maybe I should bring it back.” -Kate “The first thing that comes to mind is when I got lost on Halloween when I was seven and this nice lady told me she would take me home. In hindsight stranger danger should have came to my mind, and it sounds very weird but luckily she knew my parents, although I did not know that at the time! This stranger definitely saved me from a really rough night alone in my neighborhood. Also, my family threw a party for my neighborhood every year. I had a crush on

one of my neighbors and I never thought I would tell him I liked him, I was like eight. But, then I won the pie-eating contest and was feeling confident so I ran up to the play set he was on and I screamed "I like you." It was obviously not met with a good response so I ran away and for the rest of the night, and rest of the year it was very awkward.” -Ellyn “One of my proudest Halloween costumes was last year (my junior year in high school) when my friends and I dressed up as "The (literal) Spice Girls." Instead of dressing as the 1990s pop group, we each dressed as a different cooking spice. I was paprika!” -Jami “The most embarrassing costume of all time was when I dressed up as a dirty laundry basket and had my brothers dirty underwear hanging off of the back of it all day (also it was a legit laundry basket and not very functional to move in). The most iconic Halloween was when my brothers dressed up as the tin man, the lion, and the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz and I was Dorothy! We won the first place ribbon at the campground we went to that year.” -Alana “In middle school, I got really into Pinterest, and last minute I saw a bunch of candy-inspired costumes. I decided to be a bag of jelly beans. I taped three garbage bags together and spent the entire afternoon blowing up 50 balloons to use as jelly beans inside the bag. I duct-taped it to my body and could barely walk around all night.” Leen “For a period of time, I was really obsessed with being candy as Halloween costumes. So, one year, my mom and I handmaid a Peppermint Patty costume with metallic bubble wrap and the entire enlarged nutrition facts were glued to the back of me. I was so proud of it that it hung on the wall above my bed for like five years afterwards.” -Claire

Jim Bacik reflects on the 500-year anniversary of the Protestant reformation with a presentation that covers the history of the Catholic Lutheran Dialogue and discusses recent agreements on the controversial issue of justification and ongoing discussions of the Eucharist. Father Jim Bacik is a widely-regarded theologian, writer, lecturer and pastor who served as campus minister and adjunct professor of humanities at The University of Toledo for more than 30 years. Ordained in 1962 as a priest for the Diocese of Toledo, he served at St. Mary’s Sandusky, St. Thomas More Bowling Green and Corpus Christi University Parish in Toledo.

In November 2014, Lourdes University established the Father James J. Bacik Archives as well as an endowed chair in theology in his name. Father Bacik holds a doctorate in theology from the University of Oxford in England and previously taught at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary.

Instructor Dr. Dick Putney will present “The Battle and Memorial Landscape of Gettysburg� on Tuesdays, Nov. 7 and 14, 3 to 5 p.m. The cost is $29 members; $41 nonmembers. The Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) was the largest battle ever fought in the western hemisphere.

This class will discuss the importance of the battle, often referred to as the turning point of the Civil War, as well as Gettysburg's great memorial landscape and monuments developed by veterans from the 1860s through the early 20th century. Since 1997, Dr. Putney has done significant research and photography focused on Gettysburg's memorial landscape and its more than 1,300 monuments and markers; he also taught the battle's history to future Army officers for The On Wednesday, Nov. 8, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., instructor Laura Megeath, Ph.D., will speak about “Size of Space.â€? The cost is $17 members and $29 nonmembers. How big is the Universe? We have started to explore the Universe beginning with space probes reaching out to our own sun and the rest of the solar system. Ashley Ulrich, daughter of Pam Ulrich and the late Dan Ulrich of Sylvania, and Christopher Spaude, son of Mike and Cheryl Spaude of Hartland, Wis., were married Sept. 16. The ceremony was held at the Historic Church of St. Patrick in Toledo. The reception followed at the Armory at Hensville. She is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a master's degree in accounting. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, with a degree in engineering and received an MBA from the University of Northern Iowa. The couple reside in Waterloo, Iowa, where both are employed by John Deere.

Maplewood Park Plaque Unveiled

Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough publicly thanks John and Jan Watkins of Reeb Funeral Home, which owns the pocket park on the corner of Main Street and Maplewood Avenue. The Watkins and Reeb families have allowed the city to develop and use the park for the public since the 1980s.
