Metroparks Toledo revealed its progress on the Cannaley Treehouse Village at Oak Openings during an Instagram Meetup on March 2. The finished project will include four treehouses and three tent/hammock platforms that can be rented for overnight camping and a common area treehouse available to rent for daytime use by groups.

Completion is scheduled for later this year.

elcome spring with shopping, music and lunch during the Sylvania Franciscan Spring Art Festival. The event will be held on Saturday, March 30 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Franciscan Center, 6832 Convent Blvd.

Admission is free.

The festival will feature the artwork of the Sisters of St. Francis along with artists from all over the country in the following categories: ceramics, glass, jewelry, mixed media, paintings (acrylic, watercolor and oil), pen and ink, photography, sculpture, textiles and wood.

A bistro area will provide the perfect spot to relax. There, guests can enjoy a cup of coffee, listen to the sounds of acoustic

guitar, piano and vocal musicians, and purchase a sandwich or salad for lunch.

The first-ever festival will benefit the mission and ministries of the Sisters of St. Francis including Bethany House, Sophia Center, Rosary Care Center, Our Lady of Grace Hall, Catholic Health Initiatives, and Lourdes University.

The event is sponsored by the Sylvania Franciscans and All Good Things Art and Gifts which is located on the Grounds of the Sisters of St. Francis near the Queen of Peace Chapel.

The University of Toledo Songfest will be held on Saturday, March 30, starting at 5 pm at Savage Arena. Tickets are free for the event but a donation is appreciated.

An important part of Songfest has always been the philanthropic mission attached to it, and each year an organization is chosen as the recipient. This year’s event will benefit Zepf Center. Deb Flores, CEO of Zepf Center, stated, “We are honored and thrilled to be chosen for funding from Songfest. The funds raised will assist almost 10,000 individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues and provide hope that life can and will get better.”

There are three separate competitions: Men's, Women's and Co-ed Competitions.

Each is composed of the many Greek, academic, religious, and other UT organizations. Songfest is a philanthropic tradition that can best be described as a song

and dance performance by different organizations.

Current sponsors of Songfest are Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and Mortar Board National Honor Society, both of which hold their recognition and tapping ceremonies during this event.

Songfest, UT’s second oldest standing tradition, began in spring of 1937 with a group of six fraternities singing old college songs on the lawn behind University Hall. Women began their own singing competition in 1940, which consisted of sororities and one independent group performing choral arrangements. Songfest has continued to expand since its inception in 1937. More groups now participate, awards ceremonies are held, and lavish production numbers are prepared.

Ahmad Mahmoud welcomed the family and friends of Douglas John Martin Sr., 62, for a celebration of his life on March 9 at the McCord Coney Island Diner. Martin, a former Marine, passed away Feb. 13.

Marine Cpl. Trevor Owen, Lcpl Terrance Wilson and SSgt Kenji Kamari presented the colors to his widow, Chris Martin, following a brief ceremony prior to lunch in the diner’s private dining room.

Martin, who served in the Marine Corps, spent 36 years with the US Postal Service.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Douglas Jr., Patrick and Jason and daughters Kelly Proshek and Jennifer Martin and several grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers George and Charles and sisters Paulette Feher, Mary Sehzue, Shirley Schimmel and Victoria Mosher. Brothers Paul and Alan preceded him in death.

Sylvanian Ron Stone, age 77, is still living in the house he grew up in as a child. “My dad bought this home in 1947,” recalled Stone. “I attended Hill View Elementary then Burnham.” Stone started tinkering with cars at the age of 13. “I had a buddy next door who loved cars. I got hooked and never looked back,” he said.

Stone recently returned from the Detroit Autorama, held at Cobo Center March 1 to 3, as a three-time award winner for his renovated vehicles. “The Autorama features over 800 customs, trucks and motorcycles. It has been going on for 67 years, and this is the first time I have been in the show,” he stated. “When I was a kid, I dreamed of being at the Detroit show.

Then, as I got older, I thought my cars weren’t good enough for the show. To have returned home with three awards is just amazing.”

The Sylvania senior takes what he calls “rust buckets” and transforms them into mechanical masterpieces. “It is a lengthy process,” he said.

“I do not ‘chop’ or ‘paint’. I hire that out. I do all

the mechanics and pretty much build the car from the brakes to the engine. In one car I used a ’56 Ford dash in a ’50 Ford. Somehow, I make it work. Literally, the car is a rusted shell when I begin. I can do a car in four or five years if I can keep the original make and model parts. It takes much longer if I have to make things fit.

The last car I renovated took me seven years.

Once I start, I have to get it done. I love the process and I really love to show them off to other car lovers.”

Stone has done 10 cars since he began renovating vehicles and has already started his next project, a ‘51 Ford Coupe. He has created an interesting working environment. He single-handedly cut out part of his foundation and built a ramp leading into his basement to enable him to work year-round on his passion.

“You will most likely find me here working away. It is very rewarding to see a new vehicle emerge from the rust. It’s like solving a giant puzzle. There is no manual to tell you what to do or how to do it. Part of the fun is trying to figure it all out.”

The Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce presents the 17th annual free Sylvania Spring Expo and Market, presented by Dave White Chevrolet, Saturday, April 6 from 9 am until 3 pm at the Sylvania Sports and Exhibition Center at Tam-O-Shanter, 7060 Sylvania Ave. The event features representation from over 170 area businesses, restaurants and craft vendors.

The event’s vendor booth space has been sold out for over a month and are expecting record crowds.

Last year, over 6,000 people attended the one-day event. Craft booths and a farmers market debuted at the 2018 event and they were such a huge hit, they will return this year.

Other new features include the popular Mascot Zone with Paw Patrol, Buzz &

Woody, Minions and more. The AAA Safety Zone with local police cars and fire trucks and even a high-tech simulator Jeep will be on site for event-goers to try out and experience the dangers of intoxicated and impaired driving in a controlled environment.

The event will also feature live demonstrations and entertainment throughout the entire event from local dance, theatre, and karate groups along with businesses conducting “Do It Yourself ” workshops.

In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to win a 55” flat screen TV courtesy of Durocher’s Sylvania by visiting booths and completing a raffle-style card.

For intuitive and licensed massage therapist Francesca Breitner opening her practice at Angela’s Angels, 5774 N. Main St., was an easy decision. “This is a beautiful and safe space and I feel very comfortable here,” noted Breitner.

Sometimes careers start with a different path and Breitner earned her master’s degree in community counseling in 2010. She would wait another four years before she enrolled in the massage therapy program. “However, I immediately fell in love with the profession,” she recalled. “Working one-on-one from a loving place is so powerful and life changing.”

“I meet my clients where they are,” she promised. “I listen to what they say and I read their muscles. I also feel the warmth and heat of where people are holding on to pain and put all of this together for effective treatment.”

Breitner said she often receives spiritual messages about the client with whom she is working. “When this happens I feel I must share that message. I relay the information to my clients who may accept it or not as they wish.”

Breitner is also certified in aromatherapy and uses doTerra essential oils, with her clients’ permission. She enjoys educating her clients about the natural properties of

essential oils and how effective they can be.

She is also passionate about the importance of massage for infants and children and offers classes for new moms to learn proper techniques.

“Massages can help with calming babies, can aid with digestion, constipation and colic,” she stated. Breitner is equally passionate about helping those with chronic sinus issues or headaches. “I have suffered from both so I understand what people are experiencing.”

“My goal as a massage therapist is to leave each client with whom I work better than I found him or her.”

Breitner sees clients every Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm.

Local business owners form partnership

A partnership between Earth to Oven’s Veronica Vincent and Allstate broker JamiLynn Fox has been formed and with this new alliance comes a whole new look for the five-year-old restaurant located in downtown Sylvania’s Haymarket Square.

A bright, freshened up eatery will greet guests when they patronize Earth to Oven.

The dining room has been repainted and sports a new wainscoting, replacing the former brown paneling. A coffee bar featuring Flying Rhino coffees has been added along with a new bread case, refrigerated pastry display cases and a new point of sale station. Guests will also have table-side access to WiFi and phone charging stations. There is seating for 25 people.

Behind the scenes, new ovens complete the rearranged kitchen to also provide a more efficient space. “We are eliminating waste and plan to be as ecofriendly and green as we can. We are eliminating the use

of plastic products, for example, and will use only paper straws here. We plan to have bottled beverages such as ice tea and sodas available, as well,” Vincent noted.

Vincent will continue to offer her menu of patron-favorite selections complemented by some additional items, including vegetarian and vegan fare. The new menu will also be enhanced with suggestions from the new assistant chef, Robyn Tebinka, a former executive chef in the Hamptons and a pastry chef in New York City. “All of the highest quality fresh ingredients are the standard here,” Fox said. Zingerman bread products and Flying Rhino Coffees will continue to be available.

Fox anticipates adding breakfast along with a delivery service to local businesses and residences which will be initiated in the spring. “We plan to have outdoor seating, as well,” she said.

“This is an ideal location,” Fox pointed out. “There is great, convenient parking right outside the door. The food is so very good, as are the baked goods!”

Massage therapist joins downtown practice Licensed Massage Therapist Melinda Barringer has joined Chris Raszka, LMT, in her practice at 6616 Monroe St., Building A, Suite 3, in the Thormont building in downtown Sylvania.

“Chris was one of my instructors while I was a student in the former Healing Arts program and we have kept in touch ever since. Recently, Chris asked me if I would be willing to join her, which I see as a great opportunity and I am delighted to do it,” Barringer said.

“She has created an ideal environment for massage that is inviting and comfortable. She is such a hard worker and a talented, skillful, knowledgeable and caring massage therapist and also a wonderful person. I feel this is an outstanding opportunity for me,” Barringer added.

“Melinda and I really connected when we met. We share the same philosophy about massage and we both want to be in business for ourselves. We also realized from the very beginning, we have many things in common and I knew we could successfully work together,” Raszka stated.

Barringer is proficient in all modalities of massage including Swedish/relaxation, deep tissue, therapeutic, cupping, hot stones and is also certified in AromaTouch using doTerra Essential Oils. She is available by appointment.

Barringer has been in the medical field for over 20 years. “I always felt that I wanted to help people,” she remembered. “In 2014, I found I was ready for a different career and I began taking classes at the former Healing Arts facility. I immediately fell in love and knew this was what I wanted to do.”

She added, “I learned that through massage I could help people not only physically but also mentally as well, and there is no better reward for me than when a client leaves the session feeling more relaxed, rejuvenated and in less pain than when he or she first came.”

Raszka, licensed for over 11 years, has had her office in downtown Sylvania since 2016.

She also had a career change and wanted to continue helping people and felt that massage therapy was for her.

Hang on to the high road My youngest daughter recently had shoulder surgery. After checking her in at the surgery center, I was asked to sit in the waiting area. As any parent understands, it doesn't matter if your baby is 5, or in my case 25, they are still your little nippers.

While waiting I was reminding myself to breathe and unsuccessfully trying to distract myself by looking through women's magazines. After I confirmed that I am out of shape, my garden is not up to snuff and that I shouldn’t wear shoulder-length hair after age 50, I looked up from the glossy pages to a wonderful surprise. There was the father of my children walking through the hospital doors. In days gone by, I was the one on hospital/doctor duty. In that moment, it hit me of just how far we have come in successfully sharing the lives of our daughters. Post-op he was titrating medications and arranging for their pickup and I was gingerly getting her dressed and ready to go home. We were working as a team, putting her needs first, and giving her support.

It’s easier to dish out advice than take it. I have had many, as in NUMEROUS, what I refer to as “Alice in Wonderland” moments when I don’t listen to my own words of wisdom. However, even though at times I am still a work in progress, I have learned a few things along the way, that are worth sharing.

Have one trusted person that you can vent to about your situation. No matter how many teeth marks you obtain from biting your tongue, do not speak negatively about the other parent to the children. They share the same DNA. When you criticize your spouse you are criticizing their offspring.

Instead of trying to prove your “side,” work on improving yourself. Imagine what you look like through your children’s eyes. Do you want them to see a bitter, seething, negative person or do you want them to see a strong parent who is continually striving to hang on to the high road?

It’s all about love

Give your kids permission to love the other parent and his or her family. There is enough love to go around for both you and your former spouse. It’s not a competition.

I find it surprising that, post divorce, many people don’t know how to act regarding the respectful relationship I have with the father of my children. When they were younger, we would meet at church to worship together, we attend funerals of each other’s family members and for the past few years, their Dad, and his wife have been included in our festive gatherings.

I think people like to have a “bad guy.”

Perhaps not having a clearly defined, public reason why the marriage failed makes others feel vulnerable about his or her own unions.

Regardless, I try to remember the words of my grandfather who would say, “What others think of you is really none of your business.”

Be flexible

If your spouse wants the kids an extra hour, I guarantee that in the grand scheme of things your children will remember how awesome you handled the situation more than the hour they lost being with you.

Communicate like a pro

Make requests not demands. “How about we try…” or “Would you be open to…” are incredible ways to begin a sentence. If things get dicey take a deep breath before releasing words that can never be recovered.

Go to their strengths

I like to refer to the father of my children as “detail oriented.” Yes, there was a time when the word “anal retentive” came to mind. See how much growth has occurred?

I’m certain he refers to me as “creative” instead of a slew of less positive adjectives.

Hanging onto paperwork and color-coding anything that doesn’t move still remain under his jurisdiction.

Change your thinking

Change your way of thinking if your ex makes a positive change. For example, if they become more involved, resist thinking, “Oh great, you’re here for them now.”

Change your mindset and rejoice and celebrate that they are here NOW. The bottom line is to remember that your children did not sign up for divorce. What they desire more than anything and at any age is to have two parents who love them. I always remind myself of the words of the family matriarch, “Do not constantly battle and brace yourself for the storm, learn to dance in the rain.”

BY JENNIFER RUPLE Does the clutter in your home make you crazy? Are you overwhelmed by the thought of having to organize it, give it away, or throw it out? The process of letting go of the stuff that clutters our homes can be downright daunting, and even more so if there are emotional reasons for holding onto things.

“Our belongings are a collection of our experiences,” said Rhonda Long CPC, Transformational Coach. “When we remove some of them, we may feel uncomfortable because we have to face the emptiness.”

As part of a year-long series, “Create Your Best Life,” Long, along with Susan Herhold,

owner of The Leaf and Seed vegan food truck, hosted a workshop, “Clear the Clutter,” for about a dozen women on Feb. 24 at Maumee Bay Kitchen and Bath in downtown Sylvania.

During the 90-minute session, Long coached participants through activities to help them pinpoint emotional triggers and reasons behind holding onto things taking up space in their homes and minds. Herhold prepared a delicious brunch and presented tips on creating a kitchen that reflects health and wellness.

Long addressed how clutter in our homes can affect our emotional balance. “Removing stuff is often the final piece to moving forward from a crisis.” Some of the underlying issues could be from major life changes such as the death of a loved one, a divorce or break up, a job loss, a major illness, a move to a different home or city, or becoming an empty nester. “If we are emotionally holding on to the past, the items in our homes will reflect that.”

To help determine what should stay and what needs to go, Long suggested asking yourself questions such as, have I used this in the past year, if I were shopping right now, would I buy this, and am I holding on to this for emotional/sentimental reasons?

If the process of clearing your entire home is too intimidating, Long recommended spending a few minutes each day on one area at a time, such as deleting unnecessary emails, clearing one shelf of the refrigerator, or cleaning out the medicine cabinet. “Once we flush things out, we are opening ourselves up to new experiences and relationships, and that will create growth.”

BY JENNIFER RUPLE Each week, Guac Shop owner Danielle Arbinger loads up the ingredients she needs to make her specialty guacamole products and heads to the Northwest Ohio Cooperative Kitchen (NOCK), Jennifer Ruple located in the Agricultural Incubator Foundation in Bowling Green, Ohio. There, she spends about five hours preparing, packaging and labeling her products so they can be sold in retail outlets.

Arbinger is one of about 30 food-related business owners who utilize the commercial equipment at the NOCK and benefit from technical assistance provided to those interested in starting their own food product or business.

Since June of 2018, Arbinger has been participating in the Small Business Program at the NOCK, which provides her with guidance in areas such as food safety, licensing and shelf life testing. Starting her own food business, “has been a whirlwind,” said Arbinger.

However, she mentioned that the advice she's received through the Small Business Program has saved her years of trial and error. “They give you a path to follow. I would not have known the steps to take and what I needed,” she explained.

The NOCK is managed by the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT), a nonprofit organization created to provide technical solutions to food processing companies, and a partner of the Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

Although the NOCK is in northwest Ohio, the facility and its program are open to anyone who needs assistance getting his or her food business off the ground. “We are not just for Ohio,” said Rebecca Singer, president and CEO of CIFT. “Anyone with an idea is welcome to stop in and meet with our director, Paula Ray. She will direct them through the production and provide a roadmap of the steps involved in the process,” she added.

The NOCK is also available to existing businesses. “We can help businesses expand their product and help them grow. Some

We can provide an added level of resources to help them be more efficient,” explained Singer. There are no restrictions to use the NOCK, but participants must have general liability insurance and a business plan. Businesses using the NOCK, referred to as tenants, sign a lease and pay a monthly rent based on usage.

Working with the NOCK can help a small business save thousands of dollars. “Many would not be able to afford the equipment and licenses. Products must be approved by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the FDA and the local health department,” Singer noted.

There are two kitchens at the NOCK. Arbinger uses the smaller general kitchen where she produces about 50 pounds total of her four varieties of guacamole to deliver to area retailers such as Sautter's Food Market in Sylvania. “My production will increase to 250300 pounds a week this summer when I am participating in farmers markets,” she commented.

The general kitchen is also used by caterers, food truck operators, bakers, and those needing a dry filling machine for items such as granola, spice rubs and snack mixes. The

processing kitchen is used for anything that can be bottled or has a shelf life such as Gertie's Premium BBQ Sauces, Magic Wok sauces and Brickyard Brand Sloppy Joe Sauce.

The Small Business Program is intended to be an incubator. “Our goal for our tenants is for them to graduate,” said Singer. “The tenants using NOCK are at all different levels. Some are just starting out, and some have grown substantially. Some go on to their own facility or process at a larger facility like Willy’s Salsa.”

The timeframe of moving from idea to production is also different for each business.

“The fastest has been three months, an average is six to nine months, but it could be two years depending on the dedication. We have some people who see this as a hobby to people who quit their jobs and want to do this for real,” Singer commented. “It's up to the individual on how much they want to achieve. Some businesses start with one product and end up with several versions.”

Participants in the Small Business Program also receive marketing assistance and are provided with networking opportunities. “We help them promote their businesses, and we give them contacts to those who can help create their logos and labels,” said Singer.

“We invite anyone and everyone who might

buy food. Participants get the opportunity to showcase and provide samples of their products,” she added.

CIFT and the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation sponsor the Ohio Signature Food Contest. “We are currently taking applications for our Signature Food Contest. The winner receives technical assistance for free for one year and one production run,” Singer explained. Applications can be found at ciftinnovation.org/ohio-food-contest and are due by the end of May. Many of the products made at the NOCK can be found in local grocery stores including Sautter's Food Center and Walt Churchill's Markets. “We are very fortunate in northwest Ohio to have retailers who are so supportive of local foods. Usually that is the first stop for our producers,” said Singer.

For those who have an idea for a food product, the NOCK can help. “We always tell people that establishing a food business is not like any other business. There are so many factors that come into play,” said Singer. “Being open to asking for help and advice and recognizing the unique attributes of owning a food business are important. If they can get their minds around that, and they have the passion and creativity, they can move it forward.”

March Madness Taking Shape

SUPERINTENDENT SPEAKS As we quickly move in, and soon out of, the month of March, we can all feel it . . . the feeling of madness that sets in with the coming of spring. I look at this madness as a good thing.

In our district, so Adam Fineske much is happening that shows this madness is a frenzy of achievement: outstanding accomplishments in athletic and academic competitions, hard work in our classrooms and proud moments of service.

Some say that March tends to come in like a lion. In and around Sylvania Schools, it seems to be more like, “March comes in like a Wildcat and a Cougar!” On the athletic front, our Northview Wildcats and Southview Cougars have made us proud once again with their amazing accomplishments.

The Wildcat madness brought us the most successful boys basketball season ever, where our team went 23-0 into the sectional state tournament. They were also named NLL League Champions and many of the players earned high honors at the state level. Our Northview Ice Hockey team had a successful season as well and made it to the state level “Frozen Four” tournament for the first time in years. Northview also celebrated outstanding swim and dive seasons, and cheered on one of their wrestlers, Conner Liber, as he made it to the state championship level in Columbus. What a season for the Wildcats!

Heading south across Sylvania, the madness continued for our Cougars at Southview. With an unbelievable season for the girls basketball team, coach Kelly Heil led an outstanding team of ladies into a tough tournament where they also earned

recognition as NLL League Champions!

Southview madness continued with a winning boys basketball season, the sister team of Emily and Alexa Walkovich qualifying at the state level in diving, and Southview announcing that after the retirement of long time successful coach Jim Mayzes, they will welcome Jeremy Rowe as the new leader of our Southview Football Program. Last but not least, future Cougars and current Timberstone Wolves girls basketball players were also named NLL champions after a stunning season at the junior high level.

On the academic and arts fronts, March Madness has also taken hold. From state speech and debate champions, top-notch quiz bowl teams winning big at the junior high and high school levels, science olympiad champions, the state champion runner-up Southview Mock Trial team, both high school bands earning superior ratings at the OMEA state music competition, and many of our talented artists from our elementary, junior high, and high school levels being honored with artwork displayed at the state house in Columbus, we are beyond proud.

As a much-deserved spring break approaches, we can’t forget that when we return our students will enter into the yearly ritual of state testing. Our teachers are working tirelessly throughout the month of March to prepare for these tests, which take place in grades 3-12. Important study and test taking skills are worked into our curriculum daily and technology strategies move to the forefront to best prepare our kids for success.

We want to thank the Sylvania community for the support you give every day. This “madness” and the success that comes because of it could not take place if it weren’t for an outstanding community filled with dedication and support for education.

Thank you for keeping our kids at the forefront and helping us by partnering together to make Sylvania the #1 place to raise a family in northwest Ohio.

Drew Achinger has been a standout performer and member of the Wildcat Band throughout high school. He has been a member of the Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, Jazz Cats and Jazz Band. Drew has also participated in OMEA Solo and Ensemble, UT Honor Band, BGSU Honor Band and the prestigious OMEA District Honor Band. Drew is also actively involved in Science Olympiad and Math Club. Drew is the son of Mark and Deb Achinger.

Grant Perry, son of Steve and Rose Perry, sings baritone in the Northview A Cappella Choir and Harmony Road Show. Grant also is an active member of NV Theatre Dept. Over the past four years Grant has served as stage manager, production manager and lighting designer for many NV shows. Grant served as assistant stage manager for the 2017 National Opening Show at the International Thespian Festival and is participating for his third year in the All Ohio Thespian Show. After graduation, Grant plans to attend Ohio University to major in Wildlife and Conservation Biology.

Southview Honored Musicians

Gabi Lowenstein plays alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone in the Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band. Gabi represented Southview at this year's OMEA District I HS Honor Band, performed a solo and in a quartet for Solo and Ensemble Contest and will be in the pit orchestra for SV's production of ‘Shrek.’ Her band director said, ‘Gabi's love for music, teamwork, and fun is what makes her such a valuable member of our organization. She leads by example, is true to her word, and is always keeping the good of the entire group in her decision making.’ After high school, she plans to study math and computer science.

Kenny Zhang currently holds the position of principal second violinist in the SV Orchestra as well as serving as an orchestra teaching assistant. He has been playing piano since age 5. He has participated in OMEA Honors Orchestra throughout high school and has earned superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble as well.

Kenny is a longtime member of the Greater Toledo International Youth Orchestra and has recently traveled to Germany with the group. In addition, he has performed as a soloist with the Sylvania Community Orchestra and the Tiffin Music Festival. He is a member of the SV tennis team and currently holds a 4.0 GPA.

Southview High School Parent Club will host a spring garage sale in the school gym on Saturday, April 13, from 8 am to 2 pm.

Even being down one dancer, she helped lead the team to a 3rd place finish in Pom, and 7th place finishes in both Jazz and Hip-hop. Head Coach Lauren Gant commented, ‘Alexa is an excellent example on how to stay positive through adversity. She was given one of the hardest assignments having to learn two new sections of choreography just two days before States and performed it like she has known it all season ... an amazing dancer, Alexa displays tremendous character with a strong work ethic.

It has been such a pleasure coaching her this season.’ Alexa is in Student Senate, yearbook, the Interact and French Clubs and has a 3.9 GPA.

Freshman Cole McKinley is a varsity wrestler for the NV Wildcats at the 106 weight class. He had tremendous success as a newcomer placing 2nd at the Jim Derr Invitational, 2nd at Bill Urban Invite and 1st at the Findlay Invitational. Cole captured the 2019 NLL Championship in February. Heading into the Sectional Tournament, he won 25 matches with only 8 setbacks. He is currently ranked in the top 35 of the state of Ohio. Cole has aspirations to wrestle in College and continue his education in engineering.

Bowling camp planned Lourdes University will hold three days of bowling camps for various ages June 14-16 at Southwyck Lanes.

On June 14, there will be Fundamentals and Basics of Bowling for ages 7-12 to prepare kids for league and high school. The camp will take place from 5-6:30 pm at a cost of $40.

All campers will receive a t-shirt.

On June 15, there is a camp for bowlers entering grades 7-12. The camp will focus on the mental part of bowling, the sport shot patter, and physical game breakdown of bowling for individual and team experience to prepare campers for sport shot competition and high school/collegiate play. The camp will run from 9 am to 4 pm at a cost of $75. A t-shirt, ball towel, and lunch are included.

A free Lourdes College Experience seminar will take place June 16 from 10-11 am. Attendees will receive information about the school, bowling program, NAIA bowling, as well as hear from Lourdes bowlers as guest speakers.

Also, on the afternoon of June 16, there will be a Mini 6 Game Sweeper beginning at 1 pm.

The winner will be determined by total pin fall over three sport shot patterns. The cost of the event is $40, with $30 going toward scholarship prizes.

Summer volleyball camp

Lourdes University will hold its 2019 Summer Volleyball Camp for boys and girls in grades 8-12 on June 10-12 at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

The camp is led by the Lourdes University volleyball staff and members of the program.

Theywill teach players basic skills including serving, passing, setting, hitting, and defensive techniques. Campers will be split up based on skill level and into age groups.

The cost of the camp, which runs from 9 am to 3 pm is $150 per camper.

Lourdes travels to Ireland with craft brewing degree

With the Full Bodied Degree Program, Lourdes University became the only higher education institution in the U.S. to offer a comprehensive bachelor’s degree focused on brewing, winemaking and spirits. Designed to meet workforce demands, the Bachelor of Science in Craft Beverages degree prepares budding microbrewers and vintners to master the art, science and business of this growing industry.

The Lourdes Full Bodied Degree Program held its international launch March 8 in County Galway, Ireland, which was recently designated as the European Region of Gastronomy. The Topflight Beverage Event, co-hosted by Connemara West, Galway took place at Portershed in Eyre Square, in the heart of Galway City’s innovation district. Sean Kyne TD, Minister of State and Government Chief Whip, officially launched the degree with guest speakers John and Sally McKenna.

Lourdes University Vice President of Academic Affairs, Terry M. Keller, was on hand for the festivities along with Kevin Heanue, chairman of the Board of Directors for Connemara West plc and economist with Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority. Dr. Heanue served as the 2018 Lourdes University commencement speaker and was bestowed an honorary doctoral degree.

Toledo Community Foundation and Lourdes University present “The Sights and Sounds of Judaism” on Sunday, March 24, from 2 to 4 pm in the Franciscan Center. The distinguished speakers include American composer Samuel Adler and art history lecturer Ruthy Behare Light. The event is free and open to the public.

Coordinated by Lourdes Associate Professor and Chair of Art, Erin Palmer Szavuly, and Lourdes Choral Director Betsy Bellavia, the event is a co-celebration of the Goldberg Lecture Series and the annual Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak Art Lecture Series. Co-hosted by the Lourdes Departments of Art and Music, the March event also includes a performance of Jewish liturgical music by the Lourdes University Chorale.

Lillian Fairchild Award, the MTNA Award for Composer of the Year (1988-1989), and a Special Citation by the American Foundation of Music Clubs (2001).

“The Sights and Sounds of Judaism” features renowned composer/art historian

Dr. Samuel Adler

Unique among established mainstream American composers whose Jewish identities have played a formative part of their work, Dr. Samuel Adler has written prolifically for the Hebrew liturgy and has been consistently active in the American cantorial and Jewish music infrastructure.

Educated at Boston University and Harvard University, Dr. Adler studied under Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Walter Piston and Randall Thompson and conducted with Serge Koussevitzky. In 1966, he became professor of composition at the Eastman School of Music.

He has also served on the faculty of the Juilliard School since 1997 while remaining professor emeritus at Eastman.

His compositions include more than 400 works spanning nearly all media, apart from his large liturgical output. Dr. Adler’s orchestral music includes five symphonies and a number of concertos.

Dr. Adler’s vocal and choral music includes much written for Jewish liturgical use or otherwise of Jewish inspiration. He has written music that is more lighthearted, including settings that range from Catullus to Dr. Seuss.

Dr. Adler’s operas include “The Outcast of Poker Flat,” “The Wrestler” and the music drama “The Lodge of Shadows.”

Dr. Adler holds honorary doctorates from Southern Methodist University, Wake Forest University, St. Mary’s Notre-Dame, the St. Louis Conservatory and Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion.

He has been awarded many prizes including a 1990 award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Charles Ives Award, the

Ruthy Behare Light, a naturalized citizen, has broad experience in global engagement. She studied liberal arts at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, received a French Baccalaureate at the College Française in Beirut, Lebanon, and acquired a Bachelor of Education in French and English with a minor in special education from The University of Toledo and a Master of Arts in art history at Bowling Green State University.

Ms. Light, currently a senior lecturer at BGSU's School of Art, has developed curriculum, assisted in program planning and has taught numerous courses in art history at BGSU and UT. In addition, she has facilitated and presented at numerous symposiums, conferences and workshops on various topics in art history. She has also collaborated professionally with numerous international entities including the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, Israel.

She has served on the Embracing Global Engagement Advisory Council at BGSU, and SACI (Studio Art College International) in Florence, Italy as the BGSU coordinator.

Two Lourdes faculty appointed to Toledo committee Two Lourdes University faculty members, Dr. Patrice McClellan and Ms. Shay Bankston, have been apponted to the newly created City of Toledo Human Relations Committee. Appointed by Toledo City Mayor, Wade Kapszukiewicz, in their current roles, Dr. McClellan and Bankston will work as colleagues to support a safe, energetic and livable city and support residents working to overcome prejudice and build mutual respect.

Bankston, is the CEO and founder of Premier Consulting, a company that provies behavioral health and community development services. McClellan has presented across the country on a variety of subjects including race and gender, leadership, social justice and superintendency. She is the co-author of “Herstories: Leading with lessons of the lives of Black women activists.”

Agreement signed with Detroit school

Lourdes University and Detroit Cristo Rey High School, Detroit, Mich., signed a Catholic Commitment agreement on March 11. The Lourdes University Catholic Commitment program guarantees admission to promising students at select national Catholic high schools.

“We are pleased to offer guaranteed admission to talented students like those from Detroit Cristo Rey,” said Lourdes University President Mary Ann Gawelek. “It’s important Lourdes lives out its mission of learning, service, and reverence by ensuring all students have the chance to reach their educational goals.”

To qualify, high school seniors must graduate with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. These students can also receive a Lourdes Scholarship ranging from $3,000 to $12,000 per year. An ACT and SAT score are not required to earn guaranteed admission.

I thought I would take a moment to return to the basics regarding computers. We have come a long way baby!

A computer is an electronic device that Janis Weber manipulates information or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve and process data. You may already know that you can use a computer to type documents, send email, play games and browse the Web. You can also use it to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations and even videos.

Before we talk about different types of computers, let's talk about two things all computers have in common: hardware and software.

Hardware is any part of your computer that has a physical structure, such as the keyboard or mouse. It also includes all of the computer's internal parts. Software is any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do and how to do it. Examples of software include web browsers, games, and word processors.

When most people hear the word computer, they think of a personal computer such as a desktop or laptop.

However, computers come in many shapes and sizes and they perform many different functions in our daily lives. When you

withdraw cash from an ATM, scan groceries at the store or use a calculator, you're using a type of computer.

Many people use desktop computers at work, home and school. Desktop computers are designed to be placed on a desk and they are typically made up of a few different parts, including the computer case, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The second type of computer you may be familiar with is a laptop computer, commonly called a laptop. Laptops are battery-powered computers that are more portable than desktops, allowing you to use them almost anywhere. Tablet computers, or tablets, are handheld computers that are even more portable than laptops. Instead of a keyboard and mouse, tablets use a touch-sensitive screen for typing and navigation. The iPad is an example of a tablet. (FYI, a keyboard can easily be added to make it simulate a laptop with all the same functionalities.)

Personal computers come in two main styles: PC and Mac. Both are fully functional, but they have a different look and feel, and many people prefer one or the other. The PC type of computer began with the original IBM PC that was introduced in 1981.

Other companies began creating similar computers, which were called IBM PC Compatible (often shortened to PC). Today, this is the most common type of personal computer and it typically includes the Microsoft Windows operating system.

The Macintosh computer was introduced in 1984 and it was the first widely sold personal computer with a graphical user interface, or GUI (pronounced gooey). All Macs are made by one company, Apple, and they

almost always use the Mac OS X operating system.

The more you know and understand just how these different forms of computing are, the easier it is to choose which one is best for your needs. Most people really do not need a full-blown computer, whether it be a laptop or large desktop. FYI, the desk top gives you the ability of exchange interior components.

All the others are limited in what can be exchanged. 99 percent of the time you will not exchange components unless you are a business or a serious gamer. A regular keyboard, mouse and monitor can be used with a compact laptop if you are more comfortable with that size.

I will be getting into all of this including the filing system you should use to maintain your files. This is a skill most of us are lacking. Come join me at the Sylvania Senior Center Monday and Tuesday, March 18 and 19, from 1-2:30 for Computer Basic Training to learn more about organizing files and folders. You will be amazed at what you can learn. If you miss it, let me know and I will set up another class at a later date. Knowledge is power.

Why Sylvania Pursues Annexation of Properties in Its Water Service Area

•When the City extends water service to properties outside the City it does so with the express understanding that it will bring those properties into the City through annexation.

•This annexation policy is over 20 years old.

•This annexation policy is incorporated in Ordinances of the City of Sylvania.

•Non-City property owners sign service agreements when they receive City water services in which they agree to annexation and to pay water fees.

•Non-City property owners should live up to their agreements with the City.

•Property annexation benefits the 19,000 current residents of the City.

•The annexations since 1999 have resulted in additional City revenue of $1.4 million, mostly from income taxes collected from businesses.

•The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled Sylvania’s annexation policy is legal and promotes the welfare of the City’s citizens.

•Objections to paying City income tax are generally misplaced.

•Most homeowners in properties to be annexed will pay less in real estate and income taxes after being annexed into the City of Sylvania.

•Sylvania gives tax credit to those homeowners who pay income tax where they work (Toledo, Oregon, Maumee, Perrysburg).

•Retirement income and social security payments are exempt from the Sylvania income tax.

•Sylvania City homeowners pay uniformly lower real estate taxes and water and sewer rates.

•Homeowners of modest incomes ($50,000) will not experience a net increase in expenses even if their incomes are subjected to the Sylvania income tax.

•Homeowners with larger incomes still

receive benefits of lower real estate taxes, lower water and sewer rates and free trash and recycling services.

•Cutbacks in State funding (in excess of $1.2 million for Sylvania in 2019) are forcing the City to find new revenue to meet basic City service needs.

•The City’s budget is less today than in 2008, and the City has fewer employees now than in 2004.

•Before City leaders can approach City residents for more revenue (increases in fees and taxes), it is prudent to complete annexations of township properties in the water service district.

•Sylvania’s annexation of properties in its water service area benefits every current City resident, and is financially beneficial to most homeowners in annexed properties.

Once again you have made my day brighter with your fitness article. (Editor’s note: Referencing Mary Helen Darah’s Sunnyside column) Young people love to climb, walk and workout, however, what you don't know is that sometimes you do damage to yourself as you get to the "golden years" which I call the "rusty years."

It was good to see your dad and his excitement over the Fit Bit but please don't accuse your mother of being as "slow as a sloth." Remind her back in the day we walked daily to and from DeVilbiss High School all the way down Douglas to Upton. No parents drove us back and forth.

Some of the older students, mostly guys, had some sort of ride to use. Now go to a school, elementary or high school, and you will see all the traffic waiting to get their children while the school buses, which get bad mileage, go mostly empty.

2019 Capital Improvements

The days are getting longer and the temperatures are slowly getting warmer. That means the 2019 street Craig Stough construction season will be getting underway, and the city of Sylvania has several capital improvement projects planned. Many are being financed in part by state of Ohio grant funds and in cooperation with Lucas County.

All will be publicly bid or utilize state of Ohio prebid term prices to take advantage of the competitive prices available. No tax increases or property owner assessments will be made.

All of these projects will improve Sylvania and help keep our community one of the best places to live and work in northwest Ohio.

Zoning change

Sylvania Township trustees have approved a zoning change which will allow Waterford Bank to expand its parking lot to the south of its property at 3890 McCord Rd. The area was zoned for rural residential use, but it now includes the designation of planned unit development.

There is a residence on the property, which will be razed to make room for 23 additional parking spaces, which will expand the current parking area in front of the building.

Jerry Parker, an attorney representing the bank, told trustees there will be extensive landscaping and that the bank has agreed to install fencing to the east and south of the addition to comply with the wishes of homeowners there who were concerned about exposure after the existing house is demolished.

The zoning change had earlier been approved by the Lucas County Plan Commission and the Sylvania Township Plan Commission.

Spring cleanup

The annual spring pickup of brush and leaves, beginning April 8, is likely to take longer this year, according to Rob Nash, Sylvania Township road superintendent. He said the ice storm and then the wind storm of late winter

Lane, Radcliffe Road, Summer Drive and Kings Run Road. Also scheduled for early this year is the Brookhill Court Reconstruction at $216,700, which includes full reconstruction and waterline replacement with Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) funding of $64,400.

Silica Road from Convent Boulevard to Northview High School will be improved with a mill and fill project costing $88,000. In conjunction with Lucas County, HollandSylvania Road will also receive a mill and fill project, the city of Sylvania's portion being $278,000. Also in conjunction with Lucas County, Sylvania Avenue from McCord Road to Sylvania Lakes will be improved at a cost of $2,718,000, with the city's portion being $83,000.

Alexis Road will receive safety improvements including traffic signal upgrades at a cost of $491,000. The city's cost is $128,000 with ODOT funds paying the rest.

Some additional traffic signal upgrades are also planned around the city.

We will work with the contractors to complete these improvements quickly and caused a lot of branches, tree limbs, etc., to fall on residential and business properties across the township and it is likely to lengthen the time usually needed to make the one-time sweep.

Earlier in the year, Nash said, he had considered beginning the sweep a week later than usual at the request of some residents.

“The winter was holding on and they said they were afraid it was going to interfere with their ability to get their yards cleaned up. Then we got the ice storm. Then we got the wind storm. I just couldn't push it back.”

He explained that the department has a relatively short period of time to maintain the streets in the township and when the weather allows, the crews have to get to work on that long-established schedule.

He urged all residents to have brush and leaves at the street but not in it. Brush and leaves should also be separated, he said. Brush should be no longer than six feet, nor should it exceed six inches in diameter.

Although the sweep will begin April 8, it is difficult to project a schedule for completion, Nash said, however he assumes it will take about two weeks.

The changing spring weather also makes it difficult to give people an estimate of when crews may reach a specific neighborhood because weather often causes interruptions in the process of collection of items along more than 176 miles of roadway. This year, the volume of items for collection may impede progress.

Those answers and many others are available in the recently issued Sylvania Township 2018 Annual Report. In most cases the head of each township department has written an overview of his/her department and its activities throughout the preceding year. In addition, several statistics involving specific activities of each department are included in this year's 14-page report.

John Crandall, chairman of the board of Sylvania Township trustees, said that he is aware of the work it takes to put the report together, “I think it's important for us to let the taxpayers know what we've been doing. The department heads and everyone else involved have done a good job in providing a handy reference for our citizens," Crandall said.

Crafters showcase is at Tam-O-Shanter

The juried members of the Toledo Craftsman’s Guild will hold their annual spring craft show, the “Spring Crafters’

Participants may register the day of the race beginning at 7 am at the cost of $30 for 5K walk/run; $11 for Kids' Run, however, no t-shirts will be available.

Registered participants may pick up their race packet at the Sylvania location of Dave’s Running on Wednesday, May 15, and Thursday, May 16, from 3-8 pm or the day of the race beginning at 7 am at the Zoo. Race participants and their cheering sections that are inside the Zoo’s main gates before 10 am are welcome to enjoy the Zoo for the remainder of the day, free of charge.

Teddy Bear Care Fair

Toledo Zoo has more than enough animal love to share so they are inviting visitors to bring their favorite stuffed pal to Teddy Bear Care Fair on Saturday, March 23 from 10 am to 4 pm. Zoo volunteers will provide check-ups and cosmetic repairs in the workshop at Nature’s Neighborhood starting at 11 am. to ensure all stuffed friends are fixed up and fit for another year of fun. This bear-y fun event is included with Zoo admission.

The Zoo’s Teddy Bear Care Fair showcases the many ways that people can care for animals, from stuffed buddies and real-life pets to their favorite Zoo residents. This year the focus is on the health, care and activities of their numerous bear species, including polar bears, grizzly bears, Kodiak bear and Andean bear.

Visitors can also pose questions to animal keepers and veterinary staff during scheduled talks, experience animal feeds and demonstrations, enjoy puppet shows, interact with divers in the Aquarium, participate in hands-on activities and much more. Concert Series ProMedica announced a special concert Tickets went on sale Thursday, engagement has been added to its thirdannual summer concert series lineup. On Friday, July 12, The ProMedica Summer Concert Series, Presented by Coors Light and Hollywood Casino Toledo, will welcome legendary performer Diana Ross to the stage at Promenade Park.

Since this is a special concert engagement tickets will be $25 presale or $30 the day of the show. VIP tickets will be offered for $45, and they will include seating closer to the stage, as well as access to a dedicated cash/credit bar and restrooms for the

March 14 at the Huntington Center Box Office, Ticketmaster and promenadeconcerts.com.

For the ninth year in a row, Bittersweet is accepting new members for its Community Supported Agriculture program. CSA is a mutual partnership of shared risk between local farmers and the community. Members buy shares of the harvest and, in turn, the farmer is able to cover the initial costs of the growing season. Bittersweet strives to use good agricultural and organic growing practices whenever possible, avoids the use of toxic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides on crops and instead focuses on building soil nutrition, practicing crop rotation and using beneficial insects and companion planting to minimize the use of even organic certified sprays.

Bittersweet’s CSA is more than a partnership. By joining Bittersweet’s CSA, members support Bittersweet’s greater mission of serving adults with autism. Not only does this program allow the individuals who work in the program to engage with and contribute to the local community, but it also provides many opportunities for growth and learning new skills. While working in the CSA program, participants learn and develop their agricultural skills including preparing the soil in raised beds, planting seeds, transplanting vegetable plants, watering, weeding,

harvesting a wide variety of crops, rinsing root vegetables, and packaging produce into CSA boxes each week.

Because of the generous support of foundations and donors, the 2019 season brings with it a brand new building addition and state of the art cooling system that allows the program to grow and store more products. This new addition is providing more individuals the opportunity to learn new skills and increase engagement in the entire CSA process.

Bittersweet offers two share sizes. The Standard Share is $300 per season and the Petite Share is $200 per season. The Standard Share feeds families and veggie lovers. The Petite Share is great for couples, individuals, and those who eat smaller portions of produce each week. The breakdown of each season is as follows: Spring Season: May 7June 27, Summer Season: July 9 - August 29 and Fall Season: Sept. 10 – Oct. 31.

Bittersweet offers two pick-up locations and days. Members may choose Tuesday pickup at Bittersweet Farms in Whitehouse or at Walt Churchill’s Market in Maumee, or Thursday pick-up at Bittersweet Farms in Whitehouse.

Sometimes it energizes us; sometimes it paralyzes us. And, it seems that every week there are new things to be afraid of. St. Stephen’s pastor, Beth Ferne Johnson, will explore this topic in a sermon series, “Living Unafraid; having hope and courage in an uncertain world.” Beginning on March 24 and continuing through Easter Sunday, spiritual techniques and Bible passages will help listeners examine their own fears and learn how to move through them to a fuller, more

peaceful life.

Join St. Stephen, 7800 Erie St., on Sundays at 8:30 am or 11:00 am to explore this topic. The series concludes with worship on Easter Sunday, as the angels tell Mary Magdalene and all, “Do not be afraid. Jesus is risen from the dead!”

St. Stephen’s Easter day celebration also features a breakfast at 9:45 am and an Easter egg hunt for kids 5th grade and younger at 10:15 am, as well as worship.

Zion Lutheran Church in Ottawa Lake announced it is starting a monthly meeting called Good Grief. Good Grief is a support group to assist men and women who have lost a loved one. The monthly meetings will be held the fourth Monday of the month starting at 7 pm. Zion is located at 8307 Memorial Hwy. in Ottawa Lake, Mich.

The first presenter will be author Angela Christensen. Christensen is a bereavement facilitator and author of the book “Focusspiritual journeys of families after the loss of a loved one.” She also is the owner of Angela’s Gift shop in Sylvania. Since the loss of her teenage son Nick and her husband Mark, she sees her life’s purpose as helping others through the grief process.

In her book and at her presentation she will highlight, among other things, how to help yourself with grief related issues. Some

of her suggestions will include: make time for yourself; pace yourself; talk to others who have had a similar experience; honor your loved one and accept your feelings of sorrow, grief, and anger as a natural part of the healing process.

Christensen also offers suggestions for caregivers who are on the front line. Some of the most important suggestions include be patient in offering emotional and physical support to mourners. Real support is not a quick fix. She also highlights the importance of listening. She believes the best gift you can give a bereaved person is your ability to just listen attentively to them, even if they tell their story over and over again.

Copies of her book will be available after the presentation. Light refreshments will be available at end and story sharing about loved ones will be encouraged.

This house is the last farmhouse of the six farmhouses that still exist on Erie Street between Monroe Street and Centennial Road, which are 100 years old or older. This home was constructed in 1878 according to county records. At that time Ambrose Cone owned this property. It consisted of 80 acres and ran from Centennial Road east almost to where Applemeadow Drive is today, then north to the Michigan state line. This 80 acre parcel, at one time, had this home on it and the barn that still exists behind the “tea house” as well as other residential homes and other farm buildings.

Here’s who owned the 80 acres and our subject home: • 1863 – Ambrose Cone • 1908 – Heirs of Ambrose Cone (Fannie M. Cone, et. al.)

• 1908 – William C. Carr • 1914 – David Anderson • 1918 – Sebastian & Elizabeth Rinker • 1922 – William C. Carlisle • 1951 – Louise Carlisle By1951 parcels along Erie Street that were part of the 80 acres were split off and sold, leaving a 71 acre parcel for the barn and farmland. Our subject house now sat on a 1.40 acre parcel and was sold as follows: • 1951 – Wayne A. & Bonita B. Beucler • 1957 – Howard & Clara Forbes • 1958 – Owen C. & Margaret F. Winkler • 1979 – The Sylvania Savings Bank Co., Trustee • 1997 – Owen C. & Margaret F. Winkler • 1997 - Owen C. Winkler, Trustee • 2012 to current – John L. & Dawn Patridge Ambrose Cone and his family lived in this home from the time it was constructed in 1878 until he died in 1907. His bio indicates that he moved to the property in 1863 after he purchased it, so there was probably an earlier home on this property before he constructed our subject home. He was married first to Harriet Whitney in 1851, and she died young.

He then married her sister, Frances M. Whitney, in 1865. Between the two wives he had seven children. His two wives were the daughters of Milton and Mary (Stickney) Whitney, and the granddaughters of Major and Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Stickney. The Stickneys were very early settlers in Toledo and Benjamin was a famous General during the Revolutionary War. Family records also say that General Stickney was the grand-nephew of Benjamin Franklin. After Ambrose Cone died in 1907 family records say that Mrs. Cone disposed of the old farmstead in Sylvania and in October 1908 moved into town.

In 1908 William C. Carr purchased this property from Mrs. Cone. He only owned the

land until 1914, and the 1910 census lists him living here with his wife Elizabeth, and their three sons, two daughters and three servants.

His occupation was listed as banker. He is shown owning the house free of mortgage.

Then from 1914 to 1918 David Anderson owned this property and farmed the land. The historical society owns the 1918 photo shown here, which shows the threshing rig on the Anderson farm. David and Harold Anderson are in the photo, and I would like to note here that Harold Anderson later founded The Andersons in Toledo and Maumee.

Next to own this property were Sebastian and Elizabeth Rinker, from 1918 until 1922, and the 1920 census shows them living in the home. He was 57 years old and listed as a farmer. Elizabeth was 52 years old and his son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Martha Rinker, were living with them along with their children, Virginia, age 4, and Thomas, age 2.

William Carlisle was the next owner of the 80 acres. He had very bad luck with fires, and according to the Dec. 1, 1934 Toledo Blade he lost one of his homes on this property in 1928.

Then, in early December of 1934, he lost three barns and two large silos with their contents of hay, grain and silage. At that time they called it the Spring Valley Stock Farm. According to the annual report of the Sylvania Township Volunteer Fire Department, dated March 4, 1935, the largest loss during the year 1934 was the W.C. Carlisle stock barns, involving $12,000 in damage to buildings and contents. It was then reported that the fire was found to be incendiary in origin and the man who set it off was now serving a prison term for arson.

William and Louise Carlisle appear to have lived on this property while they owned it from 1922 until 1951, and they appear to have had other small residential buildings on the property which they rented out to their manager and other hired employees. By the 1940 census William and Louise were living in the home at ages 58 years and 53 years old. The 1943 and 1946 Sylvania telephone directories also show them living here. A 1948 Rural Directory lists William R. Carlisle living on the north side of Sylvania-Metamora Road, west of Centennial, and this directory shows that there was also a duplex on the property.

Mr. Carlisle died in 1950 and his wife sold the property in 1951 to Wayne A. and Bonita B. Beucler. They appear to have split up the 80 acre parcel by establishing and selling small parcels along Erie Street and Centennial Road.

In 1958 Owen and Margaret Winkler purchased this home and owned the property until 2012. Margaret died in 1999 at the age of 75, and Owen continued to own the house until 2012. Since I cannot find an obituary notice for Mr. Winkler he may be still alive.

The current owners are John L. and Dawn Patridge.

William A. Burns known to his family and close friends as “Allen” or “Burnsy,” 76, a Holland, Ohio, resident, passed away peacefully March 5, 2019, of Stage 4 Glioblastoma (brain cancer) at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He is survived by his daughter Jeannine Burns (Frank) Chapman and favored grandson LeeLand, sister Patricia Pembroke, brothers David Burns and John Burns. He also has many nieces and nephews.

Allen was born Aug. 3, 1942, in Defiance, Ohio. He was the eldest son of Robert and Mable Ruth(McCord) Burns and grew up in Bryan, Ohio. He served two years of active duty in theU.S. Army after being in the BGSU ROTC program for four years. He was First Lieutenant and was stationed on the DMZ in South Korea. In 1965, he taught in Edon, Ohio, followed by 35 years as mathematics department chairman and honors math teacher at Sylvania Northview. He also coached JV basketball. Upon “retirement” from Sylvania, he taught at Scott High School for seven years. That was followed by two years of substituting in East/West Holmes County Schools, Wise and Hiland.

He was a member of several teaching organizations and was especially proud to be a rare member of the Oughtred Society. He was a member of the American Legion Post 552, VFW Post 3338, and the Korean War Veterans Association.

He graduated from BGSU with a B.S in education, majoring in both mathematics and history. During his four years he was a member of the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon. He also graduated from the University of Toledo with a master’s degree in guidance and counseling and a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction.

Allen loved to keep busy and wrote daily “to do” lists. In his spare time, he enjoyed anything farm related, going to county fairs and flea markets, tutoring students in math after school, touring Holmes County and visiting his many Amish friends, and most importantly doing activities with his grandson LeeLand. He collected antique math books and slide rules.

He attended Cedar Creek’s South Toledo campus. He is also known for reciting “Casey at the Bat” and his vest trick. His favorite sayings were “Math is fun” and “The problem is not the problem, problem.”

Mary Porter

Mary (Bayer) Porter, born Feb. 20, 1936, departed this world on March 5, 2019, to be with Jesus Christ and to join her loving husband, James R. Porter, and parents, Raymond and Marguerite Bayer. She fought a courageous battle with cancer and died peacefully surrounded by her adoring family.

Mary is leaving behind her children, Beth Clark of Sturbridge, Mass., Robert (Chris) Porter of Toledo, Ohio, Mary Carolyn Porter of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Susan (Merle) Jeffries of Swanton, Ohio. Her legacy also includes grandchildren Andrew Clark, Brianne (Matthew) Metzung, Jacob Clark, Kaylyn Porter, and Hannah (Nathan) Trombley, as well as her great-grandchildren, Myla Ann Trombley and Noah George Metzung, and her special grand-dogs Toby and Penny. Mary also leaves behind her dear brother, Thomas (Sue) Bayer and her beloved cousin, Margaret "Peggy" Malone. Mary's family was not limited to blood relatives. She also considered Gesu Church her family as well, where she was a faithful member for over 30 years.

Mary was raised in Perrysburg, OH and graduated from Mary Manse College in 1958.

Soon thereafter, she married James Porter at St. Rose Catholic Church. After raising her children with her husband, Mary went back to her love of teaching. She spent 18 years at St. Joseph-Sylvania School as a substitute teacher, and then later was involved in the afterschool program. Mary enjoyed volunteering over the years at Gesu Church, St. Anthony Villa and Pilgrim Church. She believed in helping others whenever possible.

Mary's favorite phrase of affection was "I love you to pieces," or when you said "I love you," Mary responded "I love you more." Mary touched so many lives. Her family will miss her tremendously, but we know she is now with her husband, parents, and so many other relatives and friends. Our world will never be the same

without Mary Porter, but heaven now has another angel in residence.

A special thanks goes out to the ProMedica Medical Staff at Toledo and Flower Hospitals, as well as the loving caregivers at Ebeid Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary's honor can be sent to Gesu Catholic Church or St. Jude Hospital. Condolences may be left for the family at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.

Northwest Ohio. He served on several other community boards, community committees and corporate boards. He was an avid supporter of the Toledo Symphony, Toledo Opera, and Toledo Museum of Art. Richard loved music, especially opera. A highlight was a 50-year wedding anniversary trip with Joan down the Rhine and Main rivers in Germany where Richard and Joan visited Bayreuth to experience-for 17 hours-the Wagnerian Der Ring des Nibelungen opera.

An active duplicate bridge player later in life, he enjoyed playing at the Toledo Bridge Center.

He was a longstanding member of the Toledo Country Club, Inverness Club, Toledo Rotary, and a founding member of Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, Fla. Richard’s mind was wide ranging and approachable. Many were the hours that friends and neighbors would debate, often passionately, with him issues of current or deep philosophical import. Beloved by his family, he was supportive, encouraging and fair.

Richard was preceded by death by his parents and siblings Cornelia Rittenhouse, Edward C. Arnos and Rolland Arnos. His wife Joan passed away in 2017 during their 70th year of marriage.

Richard is survived by his children Julia Youngquist (Lowell), Pamela Kate Arnos, Richard L. Arnos (Denise) and grandchildren Jon Tyler Youngquist (Michelle), Alex Youngquist, Todd Fruth, Andrew Fruth, Claire Arnos, Caroline Arnos and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to the Visiting Angels for its caring service at a time of need.

Contributions in memory of Richard may be made to the Toledo Opera Association, Toledo Symphony or Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later date. Walker Funeral Home in Toledo may be contacted for details.

Richard Arnos

Richard D. Arnos, 94, passed away March 3, 2019. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, to Cora and Edward M. Arnos, and grew up in the Old West End. He graduated from Scott High School and then enrolled at Harvard University at age 17, where he majored in physics and played football.

While at Harvard, Richard joined the Navy Reserves when he turned 18. Because of his aptitude for science, the Navy sent him to study meteorology at MIT; this was followed by Officer’s Training at Cornell University. Soon after, he served on a destroyer escort along the Atlantic coast.

After the war, Richard entered Harvard Business School. During a break from business school, on a blind date in Detroit, Michigan, he met the love of his life, Joan Lawson. She had actually heard Richard’s high school speech, “How American Youth are Facing the Future,” broadcast nationally on the radio before she met him. They were married in 1948. In 1952, Richard was called back to Navy duty in the Korean War, where he served as a lieutenant aboard the USS Talladega, an attack transport.

After his Korean War service, Richard worked at the National Bank of Detroit. At age 36, he moved his family to Toledo to manage Securities Incorporated and, shortly thereafter, to establish and take public one of the first real estate investment trusts in the country. He also began to develop commercial and residential properties in the Toledo area. Later, he and a partner developed Westowne Tennis Club and surrounding condominiums. He also started one of the first self-storage facilities in the area, was a co-founder of Toledo Telecasting, the company responsible for Channel 36 licensure (now FOX36), and was a co-founder of Republic Development Corporation.
