he Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce’s ninth annual Pizza Palooza will be held at Centennial Terrace on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20.

This event is perfect for families and all pizza lovers. Entertainment will include live music, a pizza eating challenge, ghost pepper eating contest, costumed characters and kid’s activities will be available.

Those in attendance will also have the chance to vote for their favorite pizza for the People’s Choice award.

Other awards to be presented include judge’s choice in cheese and pepperoni as well as specialty. New this year is the Jim Jacob award, in honor of Jim Jacob of JCups Pizza, to be presented by his family to a person involved in the event.

Pizza will be sold by the slice; $1.50 for cheese and $2 for speciality. Full pizzas will also be sold for $10-$12.

The event will take place rain or shine.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for kids ages 5-12, and free for those 4 or under.

The Buckeye Broadband Zoo Brew, the first-ever Christmas in July themed event, will be held on Friday, July 26, as part of the Zoo’s new Christmas in July weekend event.

Ohio Afterschool Network visited regions across the state during National Summer Learning Week, July 8-13. National Summer Learning Week is a celebration dedicated to elevating the importance of keeping kids learning, safe, and healthy every summer, ensuring they return to school in the fall ready to succeed in the year. This year, each day will focus on a new theme: Literacy, STEM, Arts, College & Career Readiness, and Nutrition and Wellness. Toledo, Ohio nonprofits, the Homer Hanham Boys and Girls Club and Connecting Kids to Meals, were the focus of OAN’s visit to Northwest Ohio on Friday, July 12.

and many others are collaborators in Summer Meal Partners. SMP is a group of area businesses, school districts, nonprofits and faith partners dedicated to ensuring that children ages 0-18 have access to healthy, nutritious meals and high-quality programming during the summer months when school is out.

“Research tells us that kids that lack regular nutrition are going to have academic, behavioral and health-related issues so we can help solve that by just making sure that they get access to food, and that’s what we’re all about with Summer Meal Partners,” says SMP spokesperson and president of Connecting Kids to Meals, Wendi Huntley.

Connecting Kids To Meals is the fiscal agent for the community-wide collaboration which is in its fifth year.

Partners in Education serves as the Northwest Ohio Hub of the Ohio Afterschool Network and suggested that a Summer Meal Partners visit would be a great way to see how Northwest Ohio stakeholders work together to deliver nutrition and wellness during the summer months.

Summer Meal Partners credits the Toledo Community Foundation for getting its start through a Strategic Alliance Partnership grant. In 2019, the Summer Meal Partners funding organizations including local businesses and nonprofits including Mercy Health, TARTA, Cumulus Media, The Juice, ProMedica, United Way, Toledo Public Schools, Washington Local Schools, Buckeye Health, OSU Extension and others. This year the program has 175 locations, both a calendar and printable site list with dates and times for meals and programming can be found at Partners in Education’s website at partnerstoledo.org.

Danberry Company, Realtors, gives back to community

Lynn Fruth, CEO of the Danberry Co., Realtors, hosted the third annual Community Benefits Event on June 26 at the Hollywood Casino to recognize the company for its commitment to serving the community through volunteer hours. The Danberry Co., Realtors, its management team, agents and staff, collectively contributed more than 13,600 hours of community service to 204 organizations, churches and schools in and around the Toledo area throughout this year as part of its Community Benefits Program.

The Danberry Community Benefits Program is designed to increase and enhance the efforts of the Danberry Family Members in giving back to the community by focusing attention on individual efforts and rewarding a deserving few on an annual basis. Every member of the team is encouraged to volunteer at least four hours during June 1-May 31, in an activity that the individual selects.

During the event, three members of the Danberry Family, selected by a panel of nonDanberry judges, were recognized for their outstanding contributions. The first place, a $1,000 check for a charity of their choice, went to husband and wife, Judy Stone and Mathias Gaynor for their time working with The Old West End Association, Assistance Dogs for Achieving Independence, Open World Leadership Center (Ukrainian Women In Agriculture), Toledo Gay Pride, Victory Center, Toledo Uptown Zombie Crawl and the

Great Lakes Consortium for International Training and Development.

Second place, a $500 check for her charity of choice, went to Heather Smith-LaPoint for her contribution to The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Toledo Junior Academy, Cherry Street Mission and Toledo First Adventist. The third place, a $250 check, was awarded to Julie Wood for her charity of choice as a result of her volunteer efforts towards LifeLine Toledo.

“Most volunteers give of their time, not for recognition but to help others. We recognize that, but we believe that by sharing our efforts, we can serve as a positive example to others, which will result in motivating them to also volunteer,” said Fruth.

“Our mission statement in part states that we as a company, believe that Danberry should be supportive of and committed to each other and the community. The Danberry Community Benefit Program gives us the structure to live that part of our mission,” added Fruth.

Amy and Steve Danforth of Sylvania announce the engagement of their daughter Lindsey Marie Danforth to the Hon. Dr. Kristopher William Larsen of Nederland, Colo. He is the son of Timothy and Candace Larsen of Erie, Colo. The bride-to-be is a graduate of Southview High School and The University of Toledo. She worked for the city of Toledo as a geographic information systems specialist for the Department of Engineering before being hired as a GIS developer for the Sidwell Company. She lives in Nederland, Colo. and is on the town’s planning commission. The groom-tobe is a graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder and received his Ph.d. from Washington University. He is a planetary scientist providing data systems and support for NASA exploration missions around Earth, Venus and Jupiter. He is the mayor of Nederland, Colo. An October 2019 wedding in Colorado is planned.

Trail inducted into African American Legacy Project’s Sports Hall of Fame

Chet Trail Sylvania Schools Diversity Specialist, Chester Trail, was one of six community leaders to be inducted into the African American Legacy Project’s Sports Legends of

Northwest Ohio’s Hall of Fame on June 22. The event was held at Jerusalem Baptist Church on Dorr Street.

He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame for Toledo City League in 1988, Libbey High School in 1979 and the Northwest Ohio Officials Association in 2000.

Trail graduated from Libbey High School in 1962, receiving All State honors in basketball and baseball. He was recruited by Ohio State University to play basketball. However, he was offered a spot to play baseball for the New York Yankees organization, where he played for five years and then two years with the Baltimore Orioles organization.

Trail has served as the Northview freshman basketball coach and later, the Southview girls basketball coach as well as the track and field coach.

In addition to his current role as the diversity specialist for Sylvania Schools, Trail also serves as an advisor to the Probation Department of the Oregon Municipal Court.

He also began his ministry in 1976 and since 2001, he has been leading Grace Temple Church COGIC in Toledo. He will be the Presiding Prelate of Greater Grace Ministries International.

He and his wife of 53 years, Donna Marie, live in Sylvania Township and have three daughters and five grandchildren.

Sylvania Lions Club inducts new president

Jim Collins was recently inducted as president of the Sylvania Lions Club. He follows the leadership of Daniel Miller, who brought numerous new and positive changes to the club.

Collins has worked at ProMedica as the Metro Region Manager of Security Services and Voice Operations for the past 35 years.

He joined the Sylvania Lions Club in 2011.

Collins believes in the importance of service.

“Service is the ability to connect with others to make the world a better place,” he stated.

“The Lions welcome all those in our community who wish to serve.”

The newly elected president plans on continuing the Sylvania Lions Club tradition of service. “We are a small club that does a lot of great things,” said Collins. “Our main focus as Lions is serving the visually impaired and children in need. We had over 50 service projects last year. These include everything from collecting over 5,000 eyeglasses, eye screenings for preschool children, picking up trash through AdoptA-Highway and participation in Tent City.

We also have a Peace Poster Project in the schools, an Easter egg hunt for children who are visually impaired held at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Sylvania, and the installation of Lion fountains at Pacesetter and in the near future, at Burnham Park. We also host a holiday party for the visually impaired at Epworth United Methodist Church annually. Additionally, we award an annual scholarship. This year the recipient was Jim Duwve, a recent graduate of Northview High School.”

Collins will also focus on increasing club membership during his presidency. “We have members representing SCAT, Sylvania Area Family Services, Pinnacle Eye Care, Visiting Angels, The Sight Center, Arrow Print & Copy among others. We have retirees and those just starting out in their careers,” stated Collins. “We have been around for 20 years. We meet the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at Charlie’s on W. Central Avenue. Our hope is that others will join the Sylvania Lions Club to serve. We do the little things, and do them well.”

Deb Chany: A woman with a passion for prevention

Deborah Chany has officially retired as head of Sylvania Community Action Team (SCAT). She began lending her enthusiasm and talents to the organization in September of 1998 as the part-time director of SCAT. “I was working part-time at ProMedica Flower Hospital as an RN in the medical surgical unit before that,” she recalled. “I continued in that role until 2004. In 2003 SCAT was awarded a federal grant that allowed me to work full-time for the organization. I juggled both roles for about a year. I served SCAT full-time days and worked part-time nights at Flower. I really loved being part of the community and really felt we (SCAT) were making a positive impact so I let the Flower Hospital position go. It was difficult because I really enjoyed bedside care and working with patients and their families.”

SCAT was founded in 1985 as the community began to realize the escalation of kids involvement with underage drinking, smoking and other substances. “We decided to not live in a bubble and have the schools, parents, kids and the community at large help prevent drug, alcohol use and at-risk behaviors among youth. SCAT was founded and funded with the support of the schools, Sylvania City, Sylvania Township, and Sylvania Recreation Department. The Rec eventually eased out of SCAT due their expanding role in athletics, yet they never fully left us. They have been very supportive,” stated Chany. “Everyone was involved which gave us some footing. We continued to work with the funding we had while applying for state and federal grants.

The Drug-free Communities grant we received gave us well-needed additional funding.”

Chany garnered additional community support as director of SCAT. “I was working by myself from 1998 to 2003. It was just me,” she said. “We did any kind of community involvement we could so people would know who we are and what we do. Our job was to broaden our reach with volunteers and our board members. It was a requirement. We were 1 of 400 organizations that got that grant. One of the requirements is that you have 12 different sectors of the community involved. The grant was vital in helping us grow and establish ourselves, however, it is not a forever funding source. By receiving the grant, along with its stipulations, we were

encouraged to partner with the police and other sectors of the community. We have pulled in numerous partners including the Sylvania School District, which allows us to hold our Walk for Life and Red Ribbon events. Working with schools and the City and Township has been instrumental in our growth. The federal grant required us to show that we had the support of volunteers, in-kind donations and funds from our community partners. If our community wouldn’t invest in us, the Federal Government would not support us. We are truly grateful.”

Chany and her small SCAT team have been housed within the schools. “They embraced us,” she stated. “We worked within the elementary, junior high, and high schools. They moved us around wherever they had extra space but never kicked us out.

We do not have to pay any rent which is huge. They really accommodate us. Plus, by being in a public building, a huge burden is lifted from us such as meeting our guidelines of accessibility, parking access and security.”

The now retired director had decided to retire a year ago and began making plans for a succession process. “We did a search within and outside our organization,” she stated. “We opened it up to anyone who had a passion for prevention. We were very fortunate to have a variety of qualified individuals apply. We picked the top five and of those the board and committee chose Maria Hoschak-Gagnon. She was on our board, an active part of the community, has connections with the school system and has a marketing background. Maria has been working with our programs for years. It is not all brand new to her. It was a great choice for us.”

Chany has no definite plans now that she is retired. “I have no idea what I am going to do in retirement,” she stated. “I am still working on grants that I need to wrap up.

I’m helping with that transition. I do plan on spending more time with my grandchildren.

My husband is a structural engineer and will be working for another year. Like me, when you like what you do, it is hard to give it up.

There have been no ‘ah-ha’ moments. The first week and a half of retirement, I found I greatly missed going to work. I was told I will learn to love it. I’m taking one day at a time and see where it leads me. I have no big plans but I will always be a part of the Sylvania community.”

Over the course of the next three months, 100 women will don hard hats and swing hammers on a Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity construction site to provide affordable housing opportunities for two Lott Industries employees.

The 2019 Women Build educates, inspires, and empowers women locally to advocate for decent housing. All women are encouraged to volunteer – no construction skills or experience on a build site is necessary. Since Habitat for Humanity Women Build’s official creation in 1998, Women Build volunteers have constructed more than 2,225 homes around the world– six of them right here in Lucas County.

“Unique to this project in Toledo, is the opportunity to partner with another organization in Toledo and provide safe, decent, affordable housing options for individuals who dream of owning their own home,” said

Lott Industries provides educational and vocational opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity and Lott Industries partnership will provide new housing opportunities for Lott Industries employees.

The 100 + women volunteers who participate in the 2019 Women Build will rehab the two homes on Cuthbert Road in Toledo over the course of three months. Demolition on both homes will start in July with the work wrapping up in September. Both Lott Industries homeowners will buy the homes from Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity with a 0% interest mortgage.

Microgreens pack a punch of nutrients and flavor

Jeff and Vineta Cook, owners of Beluga Gardens Microgreens, weren’t always healthy eaters. Before they had kids they ate whatever they wanted. However, when their second son suffered a traumatic Jennifer Ruple brain injury after birth, they knew it was time to make some changes. The couple turned to microgreens as the solution to get more nutrients into theirs and their three children’s diets. “Our whole family eats them,” said Jeff Cook.

Cook calls microgreens the caviar of the vegetable world, which is how he came up with the name for his company.

Microgreens are young vegetables that are in the development stage between sprouts and baby greens. Highly concentrated with flavor, they take on the flavor of their adult versions.

For example, “Broccoli microgreens taste like broccoli and pea shoots taste like peas,” said Cook. He offers this explanation of microgreens on his website belugagardens.com: no root + no leaves = seed root + no leaves = sprout root + 2 leaves (true leaves) = microgreen

Leeks and Pea Shoots root + 3rd and 4th leaves = baby greens “The nutrients in microgreens can be up to 40 times more than their adult plants. You get the benefit of increased nutrients, but you don’t get the calories in the microgreens that you would get in the full-size vegetables,” said Cook.

Citing a study done by the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry in 2017, Medical News Today shared that microgreens have high levels of phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Because of the high levels of antioxidants, microgreens are “considered a functional food, a food that promotes health or prevents disease.”

Cook explained that the trend of incorporating microgreens into dishes originated with chefs at high-end restaurants in San Francisco back in the 1990s. “They started plopping these little plants on their dishes as garnishes. Since then it took off quickly, and now microgreens are used in fine dining restaurants all over the country,” he said.

Although microgreens are growing in popularity, Cook said people are still treating them as a garnish and not typically using them for nutrition. “Microgreens do offer a pop of color to food; however, they are not just a garnish,” he said. There are many ways

to use microgreens. They can be blended in smoothies, tossed into salads, used in sandwiches and wraps, or as toppings for pizza, soups, eggs and other dishes. Some of the ways Cook and his family use microgreens are as a salad drizzled with ranch dressing and as the base layer for hot chicken dishes or stir fry. He mentioned using leeks in mashed potatoes, eggs and cottage cheese. “Make them one of your vegetable sides,” he suggested. “The best way to use them is to cut them and eat them on the spot.”

The Cooks started growing their own microgreens because it was more economical than buying them. “It’s less expensive to grow them yourself because you need to plant hundreds of seeds in a small area,” explained Cook. In February of this year, the Cooks decided to turn their healthy activity into a business. “We rent office space off Conant Street where we grow our microgreens under LED lights,” Cook explained. Microgreens can be grown outside, in greenhouses and on windowsills; however, Cook prefers to grow them indoors where he can control the temperature as well as grow them year-round. “It’s hard to grow microgreens outside because they are very vulnerable to animals eating them.”

Cook grows several varieties of microgreens at a time including sunflowers, parsley, leeks and pea shoots. For those who want to learn more and sample some of Beluga Gardens Microgreens, Cook is a regular vendor at the downtown Sylvania Farmers Market on Tuesdays. Weekly subscriptions for microgreens can also be ordered through the company’s website for pickup or delivery. Below are two of Cook’s favorite recipes for using his microgreens.

3-5 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 1/2 tablespoons sea salt without fillers Pepper to taste In a large pot, place chicken thighs, add water and turn the heat to high.

While waiting for the pot to boil, cut all greens into one- to two-inch lengths and place in a large bowl.

Mix in olive oil and apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper to taste, cover and place in the refrigerator.

Add remainder of sea salt to the large pot to make a brine. As soon as the chicken brine

“Not enough people eat, nor know how to eat, a truly healthy breakfast full of greens and healthy oils,” said Cook. “Breakfast is the meal that provides most of the day’s energy and anti-inflammatories. This recipe is a great start to accompany any breakfast,” he added. The recipe makes three small side dish servings.

1 small container Beluga Gardens Sampler, which contains pea shoots, sunflowers and 1 delicate microgreen (broccoli, parsley or mixed microgreens) 3-5 tablespoons flaxseed oil (rich in omega 3s) 3-5 tablespoons apple cider vinegar Sea salt and pepper to taste Dice greens and combine with oil, vinegar and salt and pepper to taste.

“The warm chicken over cold microgreens is amazing,” said Cook. “This meal should be in all fine dining restaurants for more than $35 per plate, and it could be in your home tonight.”

2 1/2 pounds boneless chicken thighs one large container of Beluga Gardens Leek Microgreens 1 bunch of scallions or chives 1 bunch of your favorite lettuce or leafy green 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 6 tablespoons sour cream 3-5 tablespoons olive oil

is boiling, turn heat to very low (almost off) and cover for 45-60 minutes.

After stewing in the brine for about an hour, drain chicken brine completely, leaving chicken thighs, which probably now weigh about one pound in total.

Add unsalted butter and sour cream to the pot (no heat) to melt.

Cut chicken into one- to two-inch pieces and return to pot with the butter and sour cream, add more salt and pepper to taste if needed. Mix well.

Serve chilled greens on dinner plates and top with warm chicken.

The Floor Cleaning Guy makes a difference in Sylvania Orville Weir, “The Floor Cleaning Guy” of Set Standard Floors, relocated to Sylvania from neighboring Michigan a few months ago, bringing his equipment and years of experience to the community. “We don’t cut corners. We clean them!” is his company’s motto.

Weir recently transformed the floors at PitaSub restaurant from a drab, dull grey to a highly polished, sparkly clean surface.

“Customers are attracted to a clean area. And

business owners receive positive feedback when their floors are bright and shiny,” Weir reported.

According to Weir, to achieve the results he wants a multi-step process is used. “First I strip the old wax from the floor using special chemicals and a machine. Next comes scrubbing with another special piece of equipment. Then all excess moisture is removed by the extraction machine.

The next step is to mop the floors and

remove any debris that could remain under counters and other hard to reach areas. After the floor is dry, I go over it with a dust mop once or even twice to ensure the floor is spotless. The final step is to apply four coats of polyurethane wax waiting about 15 minutes between each coat,” he said.

“Depending on the foot traffic and general wear, this surface can last up to a year,” Weir promised. “For some jobs where there is an extraordinary amount of wear, I offer a maintenance program where I deep clean the floor to remove all the dirt and built up grease.

Then I apply two coats of polyurethane wax.”

Ali Ismail of PitaSub said customers have commented about how amazing the floors look. “And this new surface is so much easier to keep clean and maintain,” Ismail said. “I used to mop the floor twice a day and now that is not necessary. We just love how the floor looks.”

Weir became interested in his specialty while working at a big box store in Traverse City, Mich. “I was doing maintenance work

and when I started cleaning the floors, I loved seeing the difference,” he noted. “I really liked producing those results.”

Weir eventually invested in the necessary equipment and started his own business, which he has continued for over 26 years.

Aquarium World is a fishfilled family-run business

Sukie DeSilva, his wife Rochelle and daughter Erica talk about the live coral and the tropical fish living in the large aquarium with Toby Russell, one of their regular customers.

The DeSilva family knows a lot about fish from all over the world. But as Sukie DeSilva reports, “ ... we just know a tiny bit of what is living in the oceans.”

Even so, that knowledge serves him well.

“My father was one of the largest exporters of fresh and salt water fish from Sri Lanka. I started at age 4 learning all about fish from him and spent many years working with him,” he remembered DeSilva said he visited his dad’s customers around the world including one of the largest, which was located in Ohio. “About 30 years ago, I acquired that business when the owner was ready to retire and I became a customer of my father,” he said. He went from being an exporter to importer, distributing fish throughout the country.

Recently, DeSilva’s wife Rochelle opened Aquarium World, and relocated it to 5601 Alexis Rd. The store features an array of salt water and fresh water fish, living coral and all of the supplies needed to maintain healthy aquariums and their occupants.

Erica have also become very knowledgeable about fish so customers are able to acquire the know-how to maintain and care for healthy fish, the proper techniques for maintaining tanks of all sizes, how to filter water correctly and more. “Erica started about when I did,” her proud father pointed out.

Toby Russell has been a loyal customer and stops in almost daily to check out the fish to see what changes they undergo. “Fish are so interesting and love to watch what they do, how they change and how they act. I also am always looking for my next purchase,” he admitted. According to Russell, someone gave him an aquarium several years ago. “When I saw all of the colors of the fish and began to understand their distinctive personalities, I was hooked,” he confessed. “I really enjoy caring for and watching my fish. It is very relaxing and a wonderful hobby.”

Aquarium World is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 3 to 7:30 pm; Saturday from Noon to 6 pm and Sunday from Noon to 4 pm.

Chamber scholarship winner is successful restauranteur

Certified Pastry Chef Michelle Skaggs and Certified Executive Chef Jeff Schultz take pride in their specialties and their passion to provide their guests with outstanding experiences.

Michelle Skaggs remembers receiving the phone call in late April, 2016, telling her she was the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce culinary scholarship winner. At the time, she was an honor student in the middle of the culinary program at Owens Community College. “I was pleasantly surprised,” Skaggs reported. “It was a big help for me.”

Skaggs had made the decision to change direction as she was nearing the end of work toward a medical administration degree to follow her dream to become a baker.

About the same time, her now restaurant partner Jeff Schultz, had started Switchback Catering in a rented kitchen in the area. When the building at 95 S. Main St. in Swanton became available, Schultz relocated his growing business to his home town in the building, which had been an ice cream store that also served select sandwiches. One thing led to another and Schultz found he was preparing lunch and dinner for patrons who came into his eatery along with his catering operation leading to Switchback Crossing Cafe.

“When Michelle graduated she joined me in the business adding her baking prowess to our business,” he recounted.

Today, Switchback draws customers from all over northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan along with Indiana and more. “We start with a

high end, high quality product. I smoke brisket, pulled pork, ribs, prime rib and even a seven-cheese mac and cheese. We serve only high-end, 30-day age prime steaks and a variety of specialty burgers. We also feature several game meats such as elk, venison and buffalo. We like to think we offer home style food in a casual atmosphere,” he reported.

In addition, Schultz prepares all of the sauces including his marinara. French fries and chips are also handmade.

“I have one opportunity to ‘wow’ our customers and I will not sacrifice my standards,” he said. “Michelle feels the same way about her desserts. Her specialty includes cobblers and they have become very popular.

She features a different flavor every month and serves them warm and topped with vanilla bean ice cream,” he pointed out.

“We both pay attention to the little details and continue to search out the very best products we can find. There is a lot of thought and effort put into what we do but we are both passionate about our careers and we are always looking for the next greatest thing we can do,” Schultz promised.

The cafe is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to 8 pm; Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm; and Sunday from noon to 6 pm.

Lunch is served from opening to 3:30 pm and dinner is from 4 pm to closing.

School together. At first, I only knew him at surface level. He was one of the pack of “grasshopper” teenagers that would come, eat and leave as they buzzed through my kitchen. But that was soon to change when my youngest extended an invitation to Zachary to come to our Canadian “camp.”

I don’t know when or how it began, but somehow my daughters and I decided it would be a good idea to invite their friends for a wilderness experience at our home in northern Ontario. We took multiple kids to an environment without WiFi, cell phone coverage, and a temperamental toilet to what we consider our slice of heaven on earth. As I was busy loading an overstuffed car with pubescent teens, an alpha Corgi and enough food to feed a small village, Zach apme and wanted to talk. I asked him if proached ‘Camp’ quickly morphed into Zach Morse’s happy place.

Private First Class Zachary Samuel everything was OK. He looked me straight in the slept in his life jacket. Most recently, with a group Morse, who passed away June 18, eye with serious intent and stated, “I’m a Jew.” I of young adults in their late 20s, one of our 2019, was a graduate of Sylvania quickly told him I was aware of this fact and that campers jumped in for a night swim with the Southview High School. Local amateur golfer qualifies for 2019 Marathon Classic

Sylvania area resident Lizzie Win, a 2015 St. Ursula Academy graduate, qualified for a spot to play in the 2019 Marathon Classic. Her father, Tom, was her caddy during the tournament.

She and Jessica Porvasnik, an Ohio State graduate, were the last two qualifiers for spots in the tournament, with scores of 72 during play July 8 at Sylvania Country Club. This was Win’s third year to be invited to represent the city of Sylvania in the qualifier.

Win, a former player on the St. Ursula Academy golf team under varsity coach Jim McGowan, will be entering her senior year at Seton Hall in New Jersey.

She was a 2019 All-Big East selection and a member of the 2019 All-Big East Tournament team. She ranked second in the Big East in scoring, averaging 74.92 per round.

Win is extremely familiar with the agenda of the Marathon Classic as her family hosted LPGA golfer, Brittany Lincicome, for 12 years during the week of the Marathon Classic.

Six Black Swamp boys lacrosse teams competed with over 50 lacrosse teams participated in the LAX House tournament at Pacesetter on June 15 and 16. Teams from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Canada participated in the two day tournament. The Black Swamp teams included one U10; one U12; two U14 and two high school teams. One of the boys’ U14 teams and boys’ JV team advanced to the final round of the tournament.

Black Swamp boys and girls teams have been playing in the Toledo area for nine years.

This was the first ever lacrosse tournament to be held in the Toledo area. The tournament was organized by Lacrosse America, the largest lacrosse tournament company in the Midwest.

Black Swamp lacrosse teams also participated in a tournament at Notre Dame on June 23. Both boys high school teams advanced to the finals and the boys U10 team won its bracket at that tournament.

Which Internet browser is best?

Choosing an internet browser is a lot like choosing a car to drive. Browsers play a major role in shaping your internet and factors experience, Janis Weber into things like how you experience websites, what extra functions you have access to, and most importantly, how safe you are online. In fact, a good browser can sometimes spell the difference between a clean PC and a malware-bloated machine.

GOOGLE CHROME continues to dominate the world of browsers and for good reason. Chrome's biggest draw is its connection to Google. Google initially developed the browser as a faster competitor to Firefox and Internet Explorer, but it soon eclipsed both after word got out. In truth, Chrome is a safe, speedy browser that's compatible with nearly every page on the internet. More importantly, you have access to Google's search bar right in the address field, so you don't even need to visit Google.com to perform searches.

Chrome also gives users the ability to sign in with their Google account for a truly personalized experience. This will make search results for web and video more relevant to your browsing habits and can make opening documents and sharing things via email even faster and easier. For further customization, you can even install a number of extensions like dark mode, calculator, document signing, and Google Translate, just to name a few.

The browser isn't without its drawbacks, however. Chrome is notorious as a resource hog, and it can drastically slow your computer down if you have too many tabs open. Additionally, the perks of having your Google Account connected to your browser can quickly turn into downsides for the privacy-minded among us. If you're uncomfortable with your browser knowing your searching and spending behaviors, Chrome may not be the best choice for you.

FIREFOX has begun automatically blocking third-party cookies by default and has an experimental feature that will automatically notify you if you visit a website that's been hit by a data breach. On top of this, the browser's Private Browsing mode can block website tracking, helping you have a far more private online

experience than you would ordinarily.

Firefox isn't a slouch either. The browser is lighter weight than Chrome and is capable of loading some websites even faster. There’s even a library of extensions you can download. Many prefer the simplicity of Chrome's design, which can make browsing the internet more comfortable. Still, if you're looking for speed and safety, Firefox is a smart choice.

Both MICROSOFT EDGE and APPLE SAFARI come bundled with new computers.

Both of these browsers are popular with users, but it's difficult to determine whether this is because they're pre-installed or because they're preferred. Neither one has glaring drawbacks, but they tend to lack some of the security features and extensions found in more popular browsers. Edge and Safari are able to gain the upper hand against their competition. When it comes to startup time and functions, the apps are extremely lightweight on your system's resources. This is because they're part of the Mac and Window's operating systems, respectively, and are optimized for performance in that environment. There isn't anything inherently wrong with sticking to your preinstalled browser, but if you find the more basic features of Safari and Edge a bit lacking, you may want to consider an alternative.

INTERNET EXPLORER, as it turns out, was a casualty in Microsoft's updates, so going to Windows 10 will completely replace the browser with Edge. This adds a brandnew learning curve for anyone trying to get their system up to date, so it's understandable why there would be resistance. Still, it bears repeating that using Internet Explorer at this point in time is extremely unsafe. Not only is the browser no longer supported by Microsoft, but it's also vulnerable to a host of malware and adware threats. Do yourself a favor and make the switch, if you haven't already. You'll be glad you did.

If you're looking for the most wellrounded browser with the greatest amount of flexibility, speed, and compatibility, you can't go wrong with Chrome. You'll just want to make sure your system is powerful enough to handle its resource-hunger.

Thanks for asking and YES, we have loads of ideas. We, of course, have our annual Summer Read program (sign up at toledolibrary.org) and there is plenty of time to take part in that, but here are some other ideas that might work too. If your kids are into video games, then let’s swim with the current – we have so many STEM and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) related events and programs coming up that should fit right in with their interests. Sylvania Triathlon/Duathlon

The Sylvania Triathlon/ Duathlon is holding its 39th annual event on Sunday, Aug.4 at Tam-O-Shanter Sports Complex and Craig Stough Olander Park. It is one of the oldest multisport events in the country. More and more of our residents are participating in this and other running events in the Sylvania area. The city of Sylvania welcomes the large field of participants, many them world class athletes, to our community.

The Sylvania Triathlon emulates the distances of the Olympic Triathlon: 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run. In addition, the Sylvania Triathlon offers athletes a Duathlon: 5K run, 40K bike and 10K run, as well as a Sprint Distance Triathlon, especially designed for the more

TOWNSHIP TOPICS Bike Trail extended

In remarks before the ribbon cutting opening the new western end of the University-Parks trail at Silica Road, Neal Mahoney, Sylvania Township trustee, noted that the new trail extension adds to the recreational connectivity afforded to the public. Mahoney referred to a land-use plan recently completed for Sylvania Township in which citizens listed parks and connectivity high on their wish lists.

A bike rider can now take the trail from Silica to the campus of the University of Toledo and not have to be on a roadway shared with vehicles. The extension runs from King Road for about 0.6 mile to Silica Road. The change creates a path totaling about 7 miles from its other end near the Dorr Street entrance at the eastern end of the UT campus.

Mahoney and others who made brief comments noted that the addition is important in itself, but also as a step to extending the trail further west. The plan is to continue the trail along Ten Mile Creek until it reaches Herr Road. From there it can go north to connect with trails at Sylvan Prairie Park and/or southwest to Secor Metropark.

The completed trail construction is along the northern end of the long-closed King Road Dump, which was fenced-off years ago after it was deemed unsafe due to hazardous materials discarded there over the years. The northern end of the old dump has been deemed safe for use as a bike trail and new fencing has been erected to keep people from entering the area of toxic waste.

Household pickup

Archbold Refuse Service has submitted the lowest bid for completing the annual Sylvania Township household pickup program. The bid for the job is $365 per ton of household items collected. The only other bidder was Stevens Disposal & Recycling Services, which submitted a bid of $450 per ton.

Stevens won the contract last year with a bid of $400 per ton. They had been the only company to submit bids on the job since they won the contract with a bid of $300 in

novice/beginner: .25 mile swim, 13 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. The competition includes different divisions for men and women according to age and for paratriathletes.

Relay categories are available for a variety of three person teams.

The day before on Saturday, Aug. 3, the 32nd annual Sylvania SuperKids Triathlon/Duathlon will be held. It is one of the oldest children’s triathlons in the country and offers triathlons and duathlons of shorter distances according to age. It is open to all kids 7 to 14 years of age, and also offers a fun run open to 3-6 year olds.

Like the recently completed Marathon Classic LPGA championship, the Sylvania Triathlon brings world class athletes from around the country to Sylvania. The athletes bring hundreds of family members and volunteers with them into Sylvania. In addition, hundreds of Sylvania residents will be participating, both as racing participants and as volunteers. Every year the events bring some inconvenience to nearby neighborhoods – thank you for your understanding and tolerance.

I have memories of the first Sylvania Triathlon held in 1981 at Olander Park. The swimmers raced north in Olander Lake,

2016. Rob Nash, superintendent of the township road department, said Stevens always did a good job but the bidding process is frustrating because of the lack of interest from companies that might be able to perform the work.

Nash said he had reached out to other firms, but most have regular customers and can't alter their schedules or have sufficient equipment to add the township household pickup. He noted that last year's one-time sweep through the township resulted in a collection of 120 tons.

The service for Sylvania Township residents is scheduled this to begin Sept. 9.

Variance granted

The Sylvania Township board of zoning appeals has granted a variance for a setback requirement, which should allow for the construction of an animal hospital at Elmer Drive and Reynolds Road. The nearly oneacre lot is zoned for commercial use, but because of required setbacks from the roadway, only 0.59 of an acre is available for development.

Daryl Graus, manager of planning and zoning for Sylvania Township, noted that corner lots are more restricted than others because they have to adhere to setback requirements from both roadways, unless a variance is granted. It was one of the reasons given by the staff recommending a vote in favor of the variance.

The applicant is Roger Grothaus of Reynolds Road Animal Hospital. There had been an attempt to purchase the singlefamily house on a lot abutting to the west of the vacant corner lot, but an agreement couldn't be reached, according to testimony to the BZA. Based on an earlier BZA hearing, the property will need to have a solid privacy fence to the west and north of its boundaries.

Hearing dates changed

The dates for hearings about a request for a special use permit for a proposed residential care facility at 4828 Whiteford Rd. have been changed. The hearings have been set back about a month and are currently set for Aug. 28 with the Lucas County Planning Commission and Sept. 9

Sylvania–Then and Now

This house on Erie Street was built in 1902.

Albert Carl subdivided this entire corner in 1901 and this lot became Lot No. 5 of Carl’s Addition. The owners of this lot are recorded as follows: 1885 – Albert Carl 1902 - Mary Kelley 1919 – Certified delinquent taxes 1920 – Julius and Elizabeth Woodbury 1935 – Carl H. and Beatrice Pollock 1939 – Lucy Becker 1946 – Gerald D. and Evelyn Edinger 1969 – Evelyn Edinger 2003 – Douglas A. Edinger In the 1860 census, Mary Wickham, who later became Mary Kelley, was living in Richfield Township, Lucas County, Ohio with her parents George and Lydia Wickham. Mary was 18 years old and was listed as a twin to her brother John Wickham. She married Charles Patrick Kelley and they lived in Indiana for many years before returning to Lucas County,

after the 1900 census, and purchasing this home. On Dec. 31, 1910, Mr. Kelley died while living in Sylvania and was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery. His wife Mary continued to live here in this home. By the 1920 census, she was 77 years old and had her sister, Nancy Whitney, 85 years old, and Lucinda Canfield, 82 years old, living with her; probably to help with expenses.

In 1919, according to a note on the transfer card, this property was certified to have delinquent taxes and shortly after the 1920 census was taken, the property was sold to the Woodburys. A 1926 Sylvania Post Office resident listing shows Edward Gordon living at 6630 Erie St., so the Woodburys must have been renting the house while they owned it.

By the 1930 census, Edward and Olga Copper were renting the home. He was listed as 45 years old, and employed as a shoemaker at a shoe store. Olga was listed as 42 years old, and living in the home was their daughter Eunice – 11 years old, and daughter Delores – 6 years old. Also living with them was their daughter Alice – 21 years old, and her husband, Douglas W. Hook – 26 years old, and

6630 Erie Street their son, Edward Hook, age 3 months. Mr. Hook was working as a salesman for an electrotype.

By 1935, the Pollocks purchased the property and in 1936 they obtained a building permit to add a 6-foot by 14-foot porch to the front of the present dwelling. According to the Sylvania Sentinel dated Jan. 5, 1939, “Carl H. Pollock, of Erie Street, an employee of the local post office for the past 10 years, has received word of his appointment as Postal Inspector.”

He was to go to Denver, Colo. for a six-month training period and then he was to be assigned.

The Pollocks sold the home in 1939 to Lucy Becker. At the time she was living at 6826 Maplewood Ave. in Sylvania, and rented this home to her daughter and son-in-law, Gerald and Evelyn Edinger. They purchased the home from her in 1946.

In the 1940 census, Gerald and Evelyn Edinger were renting the home. He was 23 years old and she was 21 years old. He was employed as a laborer at a concrete pipe plant and she was working as a bookkeeper at a

bank. Gerald Edinger lived his younger years in Indiana, and then his family moved to Sylvania and lived on Sylvania Avenue. He came from a large family, and married Evelyn Becker in 1939. A building permit was issued in April of 1963 for an 8-foot by 10-foot addition on the east side of the home and the builder was J.P. Engel & Son. Mr. Edinger died in 1969 at the age of 52 years old. His obituary notice said that he was a World War II veteran and had three sons: Douglas, James and Randall, who were all living at home when he died. Mr. Edinger had been employed as a foreman at the Toledo Concrete Pipe Co. for 32 years. The home transferred into his wife’s name that same year.

His widow continued to live in the home until she died in 2003, and the home at that time transferred to her son Douglas Edinger.

According to the suburban directories he has been living in this home through these years.

In 2009, Douglas Edinger obtained a building permit to demolish an old garage and construct a new garage on the same site.

Robert Edward Alexander, age 73 of Onsted, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 8, 2019, at his home. He was born June 9, 1946, in Philadelphia, Penn., the son of Christopher Edward and Anntoinette (Malatesta) Alexander. On March 19, 1999, he married Stephanie Dames in Charlevoix, Mich.

Robert received his bachelor’s degree from Villanova University in 1968 and remained an “extreme” fan of its basketball team, cheering on his Wildcats through three National Championships. He received his master’s degree from Springfield College.

Robert began his career with the YMCA at age 16 as a swimming instructor. Throughout the years he served the organization in many cities and roles including physical director, executive director, vice president of operations and eventually retired as the CEO of the YMCA and JCC of Greater Toledo in 2014.

The joining of these two organizations exemplified Robert’s life motto of “bringing people together.”

A competitive runner for years, Robert competed in triathalons and completed 89 marathons including ultra-marathons and 24hour races. Robert was a Paul Harris Fellow and member of the Toledo Rotary Club as well as a volunteer for Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank, The Victory Center and The Ability Center of Greater Toledo, where he was instrumental in bringing the organization together with the Assistance Dogs for Achieving Independence. He was a connoisseur of music and martinis; loved reading, writing and playing pickleball with his friends at the lake.

Robert is survived by his wife, Stephanie; mother Ann McGrath of Perrysburg, Ohio; two children; Jennifer (Lynn) Ruple of Monclova, Ohio and Josh (Jody) Alexander of Orlando, Fla.; two step children, Christopher (Kierra) Dames of Maumee, Ohio and Lisa (Dan) Dames Hazlett of Greensboro, N.C.; sister Kathlene (William) Jernegan of Whitehall, Penn.; six grandchildren, Carter and Caitlyn Alexander, Patti and Penny Hazlett, Christopher and Jada Dames. He was preceded in death by his father.

Don Twining

Don L. Twining, age 89, of Perrysburg, Ohio, passed away July 1, 2019, in his home. Born May 11, 1930, in Sylvania, Ohio, to Ned and Bessie (McLaughlin) Twining along with siblings Dolores, Robert (Grace) and Barbara. Don grew up in Sylvania Schools where he met feisty Suzanne Malloy for the first time on the baseball diamond when he “tackled her.” The sparks flew when she claimed to be a better shortstop than he and he believed no girl could play better than his boys. The two childhood friends dated for a while in high school with Don graduating from Toledo Scott High School in 1949 having excelled on the football, track, tennis and golf teams.

Don continued playing football for the Air Force after enlisting (1950-1954) and was the 8th Air Force Supply Sergeant. In 1953, Don met and married Dorothy Ann Jetton and the Twinings moved to Toledo after being honorably discharged from the Air Force. Don started at Libbey-Owens-Ford (LOF) in glass finishing, packaging and shipping and Dorothy and Don started to rear their three children Don N., DeeAnn and Douglas. In 1983, the LOF East Broadway site closed moving shipping to Rossford, Ohio, where Don became manager of two shifts with 26 trucks a day. With Don’s direction, in three months the same personnel were efficiently handling 52 trucks a day. As a measure of the respect that Don garnered, all of his original bosses ended up working for Don at some point. At 62 years old, Don retired from LOF after receiving the highest merit awards annually. Retirement was reluctant, however, due to major heart surgery.

Football was always a passion of Don’s as he officiated Toledo University games in 1963 and Northwest Ohio High School games from 1963 to1974. He loved watching his grandson Kris Twining play football so much that he traveled

weekly to avoid missing his games in Marion, Ohio. Don was active in the Zenobia Shrine organization between 1970 and 1995, including president of Stewards in 1993.

Following his Shrine volunteering, Don became active in the Conn-Weissenberger Post 587 of the American Legion (1995-2011), including periods as Commander (2001-2002) and buildings manager. Don loved organizing the fish fries, and sharing the stories of these events. The Twinings were members of Augsburg Lutheran Church, where he was Scout Master for six years when Don N. was young. During those years, Dee recalls how special she always felt as daddy’s little girl.

After retirement, Don enjoyed woodworking and took craft items to shows in the region.

After the passing of his wife Dorothy in 2008, Don serendipitously met his high school sweetheart, Sue (Malloy-Conrad), whose husband of 53 years had recently passed. The two rekindled their romance and married in August of 2009 at Gesu Catholic Church

surrounded by their families. Their favorite pastime was playing all sorts of card games and that provided a wonderful way to blend into Sue’s large family. A few years later Don entered the Catholic Church and the couple enjoyed being very active in the Gesu Church community.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Ned and Bessie, sisters Dolores and Barbara and wife Dorothy. He is survived by his wife Sue (Malloy-Conrad), sons Don and Doug, daughter Dee, brother Bob (Grace), grandson Kris Twining, great-grandchildren Kade and Ally, as well as step-children James Conrad (Martha), Douglas Conrad (Angela Wang), Cathleen Opperman (Bill), Tom Gabelman, David Conrad and Jenny Swope (Brian) and 14 grand and great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be directed to Gesu Catholic Church, St. Francis de Sales High School Conrad Scholarship or Notre Dame Academy Carol Conrad Scholarship.

Summer Bash held at Olander
