Cancer Survivor Art Show

Visitors to the 2017 Cancer Survivor Art Show enjoy the art work and conversation with artists.

T

he Victory Center will present its sixth annual Cancer Survivor Art Show on Friday, Jan. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Victory Center, 5532 W. Central Ave., Suite B, Toledo.

Approximately 25 artists will be represented through 60 plus pieces of art.

Many of the cancer survivors will be present to share the stories behind their artwork. “The art may be an expression of what they are feeling about their cancer journey, or they may use the opportunity to reconnect with the things that bring them joy like a favorite beach spot or a pet they love,” explained Penny McCloskey, program director at The Victory Center.

Since art expression is an individual process, the scope of the collection includes a wide variety of art forms, with items such as glass mosaic, jewelry, knitting, collage, watercolor, ink and acrylics. Pieces range

One of the featured survivor artists is Deborah Kopka from Perrysburg, a botanical artist since 1993, who has taught Botanical Illustration in Watercolor and Mixed Media at the Toledo Museum of Art, various universities and community colleges. She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Society of Floral Painters (United Kingdom), and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. She is also the author or co-author of several children’s books.

Olivet Preschool celebrates 50 years of service to community Founded in 1967, Olivet Christian Nursery School is celebrating its 50th year in preschool education. OCNS was founded

by Virginia Wiese, a member of Olivet Lutheran Church, at the request and direction of Pastor Philip Antilla. During the first year, there was only one class, but the school quickly grew, with additional teachers and classrooms added over the years.

The preschool was uniquely founded as a parent cooperative program, which is designed to allow parents and caregivers direct involvement in a child’s early education. On a “helper day,” parents participate in classroom activities, assist with programs, and watch their child as they are the class “leader” for the day. The premise is that parents and teachers work together to foster a life-long love of learning in a positive, creative environment.

It is a concept that has carried on through the preschool’s 50-years of service.

The core values of play-based learning

and preparing children for kindergarten still continue today, 50 years since its inception. OCNS is still recognized for their approach to nurturing a child’s imagination, creativity and social skills.

Earlier this year, OCNS was selected for the 2017 “Best of Sylvania Award” in the Preschool category by the Sylvania Award Program, which honors the achievements and accomplishments of local businesses throughout the Sylvania area.

Today, the church and preschool have a close relationship, with several Olivet Church members as staff of the preschool.

Currently, Olivet Church members on staff include Jennifer Crooks (Director & Teacher), BeLynda Murra (Teacher) and Renee Kornowa (Teacher).

SUA Students Present ‘Peter Pan’

TSYO to perform second concert of season The Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras will perform their second concert of the season on Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle Theater. The three orchestras are composed of young musicians from various areas of northwest Ohio and southern Michigan. The opportunity to perform with a group of musicians who share a similar dedication to musicianship and quality of performance is a great supplemental experience for serious young artists.

The TSYO will perform selections by eminent composers Jean Sibelius, Modest Mussorgsky, and more. William Rand, will be

principal horn player of the TSYO Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert is free and open to the public.

On Feb. 10, the TSYO Concert Strings will travel to Columbus to perform at the 2018 Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference.

Additional upcoming TSYO performances include a Side by Side concert with the Toledo Symphony on March 4, at 4 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle Theater, and a Pops concert on April 30, at 7 p.m. at Maumee High School’s Performing Arts Center.

On Jan. 27 people are encouraged to do some Freezin’ for a Reason at the 13th annual Sandusky Polar Plunge. Warm-hearted participants will take a chilly dip to raise money for Special Olympics Ohio.

For their Polar Plunge experience, participants raise money to earn the privilege of jumping into the frigid waters of the Polar Plunge Pool, which will be set up in the parking lot of the Thirsty Pony. Polar Plungers can participate in a costume contest beforehand with prizes awarded for creativity and overall

wackiness.

Anyone afraid to jump into the icy water is invited to register as Too Chicken to Plunge.

Local Youth Orchestra to participate in international concert exchange Youth Orchestra spring concert.

The Toledo International Youth Orchestra has partnered with the Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra of Guelph, Ontario for an international concert exchange.

The first of two concerts will take place Saturday, Feb. 24 in Guelph, Ontario where TIYO musicians will participate as the guest orchestra. The Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra will reciprocate with a joint performance in downtown Toledo on Saturday, May 19 at 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. Sylvania–Then and Now

Continuing again with the theme of houses in Sylvania that are 100 years and older, this new year brings in a few more homes that are now available for the 100year recognition by the Sylvania Area Historical Society. One hundred years ago the United States was in the middle of World War I, and there are a few homes documented as being constructed during the war years, which we will share in upcoming articles.

In this article, we will share information that was found on the house at 5308 Main Street, which records show was constructed in 1902. In that year S.O. Rothfuss purchased a parcel of land containing 1.91 acres on Main Street from Elizabeth Parker. He, at that time, created the Rothfuss subdivision, with nine lots. This parcel became Lot No. 8 in that subdivision, and Rothfuss continued to own the property and home until he sold it in 1916 to William and Dollie Classen. The Classen family owned this house from 1916 to 1961.

Dollie Classen was born Dollie Eff in 1879, the daughter of Charles and Ellen Eff. In the 1880 census, she was living in Sylvania Township with her parents, listed as 1 year old. Her parents were listed as farmers.

William Classen was born in Mass., in 1872 and in the 1880 census he was living with his parents, Charles and Millie Classen, in Washington Township, Lucas County, Ohio, listed as 7 years old. His parents were also listed as farmers. Dollie Eff first married

William Seager in 1901. They had two children, Garnet, born in 1902, and Laverne born in 1904. I could not find out what happened to Seager, but Dollie was then recorded as marrying William Classen in 1910.

In the 1920 census, the Classens are listed living as follows: William F. Classen – 46 years old – married – born in Massachusetts – occupation – laborer – auto factory; Dollie D. Classen – wife – 41 years old – married; Garnet M. Seager – daughter – 17 years old – single – occupation – saleslady – retail bakery; and Laverne M. Seager – son – 16 years old – attending school.

In the 1930 census, William and Dollie Classen were still living in this house. He was 56 years old and employed as a repairman for the T & W Railway. Dollie was listed as 51 and her son Laverne Seager, 25 years old, was living in the home as well, employed as a stock clerk for the T & W Railway. Dollie’s daughter Garnet was now married to Robert Harms and they built a home next door to the north of this home in 1922.

A building permit was issued to William Classen in February of 1930, with S.E. Seager listed as the builder. This permit allowed him to add a bay window on the house.

When the 1940 census was taken, William and Dollie were still listed as living in this house. He was 66 years old and working as a laborer in the building trades. Dollie was listed as 61 years old and Laverne Seager, her son, was living in the home at the age of 35 years old, working as an apprentice auto mechanic at a garage. Laverne was married in 1942 to Mildred Behrens Truelsen.

William Classen lived here until he passed

1917 away in 1955 at the age of 82, and Dollie lived here until 1961 when she also died at the age of 82. In 1961, the house was sold to Lawrence and Elsie Reifert, who lived at 6736 Green Rd. in Ottawa Lake, Mich. In 1961, Reifert was issued a building permit to enlarge the kitchen by one foot three inches and convert from a coal furnace to gas. The Reiferts rented the house out while they owned it. Elsie died in 1977, and in 1978, this house was transferred into just Lawrence’s name. He sold it in 1980 to Stephen and Lori Ritzenthaler.

Using the Suburban directories, starting in 1961 and 1962, this house is listed as vacant. Clyde Schafer rented the house in 1963 and 1964. From 1965 until 1969 Peter Herr rented the house, and in 1970 Donald Meyers was listed as renting the house through 1989. The 1990 directory shows S.S. Ritzenthaler living in the home until 1992 when Donald Daniels was listed as renting the home until 1994. Then Donald and Janet Meyers, who had rented the home from 1970 through 1989, purchased the home. It was in

1997

2017 their names until 2003 when it was sold to Anthony Garzony, and today this house is still in his name. He appears to be renting the house out, and currently Lewis and Leah Furry are renters here according to the directories.

Judge M. Scott Ramey retires after 30 years While Judge M. Scott Ramey has retired from the bench, he plans to continue an active role with Sylvania Community Action Team and particularly with the organization’s newest program, Core Committed, the Life of an Athlete. “This is such a great organization and I feel it is so important, especially now,” Ramey noted.

“But I am also happy to be able to spend more time with my wife, Becky, who retired from her nursing position four years ago. And, to enjoy our grandchildren as well as our daughters, Jennifer, Gretchen and Megan and their families.”

“I am looking forward to having the time to read and be able to workout during the day rather than waiting until after my workday is finished,” he added.

“My dog is happy about the long walks we now take. For the rest, I will figure that out as I go along.”

For the past 30 years, Ramey’s life has been pretty much regulated by the court docket where he dealt with thousands of cases. “We would handle 100 or more cases every Wednesday, public defender day, and 50 to 60 cases on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Tuesdays are designated as jury days and are usually lighter allowing time to follow up on administrative duties for the court,” he explained. “When I first started cases seemed a lot more straightforward. However, we are ever changing. I have to step back and look at every case independently. My goal has always been to listen to each person and learn as much as possible about the case to better deal with the situation. I wanted to make people feel relatively comfortable and put them at ease so when they leave the court they will have a better opinion of it.”

During his terms on the bench, Judge Ramey, among other things, started a probation department, instituted a community service program, commenced a school-to-court program for third, fifth and sixth grade students in the court district, started a domestic violence counseling program at the court and, in conjunction with other area judges, established a victim assistance program.

Despite the demands of his schedule, Judge Ramey has been very active in the local and state bar associations, serving on

many committees through the years. He served on the ProMedica Flower Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2012. He has been very involved with Sylvania Rotary and the Rotary Foundation, Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce and Sylvania Area Community Improvement Corporation, Sylvania Jaycees and the Holland-Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the HollandSpringfield Drug Task Force. He has also been an active member of Sylvania First United Methodist Church. In addition, he found time to coach softball for nine years and soccer for 10 years.

No stranger to the court system, Ramey first sat on the bench when he was in the fourth grade and joined his grandfather, Judge Homer Ramey, on the Toledo Municipal Court. “He invited me to come to court and he had me sit next to him on the bench to observe the proceedings. He even asked my opinion about a case. I still remember that day and it certainly gave me a positive view of what judges do,” he recalled.

During high school, that experience in the the court continued as he worked for his father’s law firm and found himself running papers to various courts.

Following graduation from DeVilbiss High School, DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and Duke Law School he followed in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps making the law his career. In 1975, he was appointed to the prosecutor’s staff of the Sylvania Court where he worked part-time while maintaining a private civil law practice.

“Judge William Erb was on the bench at the time and was a wonderful mentor to me. I learned so much from him especially about courtroom decorum and maintaining a neutral demeanor. I learned that being a judge is about the law and about the parties involved. That was an important lesson to learn,” he noted.

“When Judge Erb decided to retire, I felt I was ready to step in.”

Five, six-year terms later, Ramey felt it was time to retire. “The court is in good hands,” he said. “Judge Bonfiglio will do a good job and the staff we have is excellent.

They will continue to help him as they helped me through the years.”

The Village Candy Shoppe brings sweet things to the Sylvania Historic Village

A sweet business, The Village Candy Shoppe, is about to open in the Sylvania Historical Village. Patricia Wahl, best known as a licensed massage therapist and a familiar presence at Harmony In Life, wanted to recreate a memorable part of her childhood. “I have fond memories of growing up in a small town and the candy store was part of that. I want to provide that same opportunity to others in Sylvania. Memories made with kids, parents, grandparents and friends in a caring community are memories that will last a lifetime,” Wahl noted.

“The Village Candy Shoppe will be another must-visit destination for visitors and residents along with Sylvania’s Historical Village and all the other wonderful shops Sylvania offers,” she pointed out.

While the days of penny candy reminiscent of Wahl’s childhood are long gone, individually wrapped pieces of old-time favorites will be available at affordable prices. Wahl plans to have a table of offerings all priced the same so that customers can walk around to check out the selection. “Children can fill a bag with different pieces. Bags will be priced at $2.50 and $5,” she explained.

In addition to the table of candies, several other displays will be featured. “I will have historical facts, trivia and stories of candy development through the decades, from the 1800s when Sylvania was incorporated to the present. Mari Davies has taken on a new endeavor in her career by becoming Director of Institutional Giving at the Toledo Symphony. D.A.R.E. Graduations

Over 200 Sylvania fifth graders recently graduated from the city of Sylvania’s Craig Stough 12-week long D.A.R.E. program. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, and is a program presented to students around Ohio and the United States. Graduation ceremonies were held in December at the Toledo Islamic Academy, as well as Highland and Maplewood elementary schools. I would like to share a little information about the Sylvania D.A.R.E. program.

The D.A.R.E. program is designed to give the fifth graders the tools and knowledge to resist the pressure to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, overthe-counter and prescription medications, as well as make good choices when faced with peer pressure and bullying. The program is taught by Sylvania Police Officer Kevin Pooley, along with assistance from other Sylvania police officers.

The program is similar to the Safety City program given to kindergarteners – give them the tools they need to be safe as they

New Chairman Elected

Neal Mahoney has been elected chairman of the Sylvania Township trustees for 2018.

He replaces John Jennewine who served as chairman for the trustees last year. John Crandall will be vice chairman for this year.

Trustees will hold regular meetings the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The starting time for regular meetings will be 5:30 p.m.

They also decided to establish a policy of hearing any zoning-change issues at 6 p.m. during meetings. If issues on the regular agenda have not yet been dealt with, trustees will put them on hold for after the zoning matter and later deal with the remaining agenda items.

Tree Still Up?

There's still time for you to take advantage of Sylvania Township's program for disposal of Christmas trees. Residents may place their trees in a fenced-in area at the southwest corner of the parking lot of the township administration building, 4927 HollandSylvania Rd. Trees should be left in the area with temporary fencing. All lights, decorations, and tinsel must be removed.

The program will continue through the month of January.

Thank You Note

It was meant to be an in-house thank you from the road superintendent, but a note complimenting the Sylvania Township road crews wound up getting broader attention.

Rob Nash said he wrote the congratulatory note because the workers deserved it and that not enough attention gets paid to their day-to-day efforts. He noted there has not been a one-day crippling weather event to draw attention, but that this season has been challenging nonetheless.

At the D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony, each student received a graduation certificate and D.A.R.E. T-shirt. The winning essay writers in each classroom are recognized. Many parents and grandparents attend. We talk about how privileged the students are to live in Sylvania and to have the support of their parents. Many less privileged students from less supportive schools, both nearby and around the world, would probably give almost anything to change places with them, and are busy working to improve themselves in the world.

Our children need to have a clear head and a good education to compete in the world today.

Sign Height Variance Granted

The Sylvania Township board of zoning appeals has granted a variance for the height of a new sign at the Brown auto dealership, 6155 West Central Ave. Rob Brown told board members that due to road changes at Central and the expressway it is more difficult for motorists to see a current directional sign meant to direct customers to the business.

The board’s staff recommended approval for a new sign, which can be up to 17 ft. in height, 12 ft. higher than what is called for in the zoning code.

The staff report noted that Central Avenue road work had reduced the visibility of the current sign. It added that the additional height of the sign should not have a negative impact on the area nor should it create a problem for motorists.

Maplewood Elementary School Essay Winners Much has been said and written about whether the D.A.R.E. program works, and whether it is worth the time and expense to present it. I think it is – most of the kids all remember their Safety City lessons when I ask, and I believe most will remember their D.A.R.E. lessons as well. Growing up today is tough, and our kids deserve all we can offer them.

D.A.R.E. has been taught in Sylvania since 1991. In those 27 years, over 6,200 students have been through the program. In the spring, the same D.A.R.E. program is offered at St. Joseph and Sylvan elementary schools.

The need to get all the easements, allow for time to award contracts for the work and other issues makes it unreasonable to think work could begin by the March deadline.

The drainage improvement work is meant to run along the stream from west of Herr Road to a point east of Centennial Road. In that area, the creek runs between Central Avenue on the south and Sylvania Avenue on

Rob Nash, road superintendent for the township, said that because of the winding nature of the creek in that area, it is prone to log jams. That slows the flow of water and often causes the flooding, which can plague home and business owners.

Once the project is completed, he said, that problem should see significant improvement.

Blame It on the Bat

In an effort to help the endangered Indiana bat, the government prohibits clearing trees in certain areas from March 31 to Nov. 1. One of those areas is along a stretch of Ten Mile Creek in Sylvania Township, earlier targeted to begin clearing this spring for a major project to widen and re-align the waterway. Because changing the banks of the waterway will require felling some trees, beginning work won’t be possible until November, according to Brian Miller of the Lucas County engineer’s office.

The bat isn’t solely responsible for the delay, Miller said.

Easements are still needed from property owners along the banks of the creek to allow workers “right of entry” to begin the project.

It might be time to perform some basic maintenance on your computer to keep it running in top shape.

Here’s some advice to Janis Weber keep your computer secure and performing optimally: Windows Firewall: Turn on the Windows Firewall feature to stop people and programs from downloading malicious code and viruses to your computer from the Internet.

Antivirus software: You can use antivirus software such as Windows Defender, which comes with all Windows 10 computers, or a third-party antivirus program such as MacAfee, to scan your computer and remove viruses.

Use System Restore: You can create a System Restore Point to save current settings and revert to those settings if your computer begins having problems. This can happen after installing a new program or driver for hardware.

Optimize your hard drive: Optimizing your hard drive cleans out any damaged or obsolete files to improve your computer’s performance.

A STUDENT SPEAKS If you have read any article of mine from the past six months, you know that I have mentioned stress, anxiety, and copious amounts of work. The summer and the first semester of my senior year, though LIBBY STUPICA exciting, were filled with considerable amounts of homework and college applications. There’s no doubt that the past six months were filled with plenty of memorable moments and lots of growth, but by the end of 2017 I just felt worn out.

However, December blessed me beyond measure.

After turning in all my semester projects and college apps, I was allowed the biggest exhale, and I was the receiver of good news and astounding experiences. The blessings started when I found out I only had one final exam,

Battery life: If you have a laptop or tablet, you should be aware that all batteries wear out and your computer’s is no different. If your battery doesn’t hold a charge as long as it used to, consider buying a replacement battery from the manufacturer. Exercise (use) the laptop battery or it dies faster.

Perform a disk cleanup: Use the Disk Cleanup feature to free up some disk space on your hard drive. This helps your computer perform better. One-third of the drive should be free.

Set up a password: By assigning a password to your Windows user account, you may prevent people from accessing your files and personal data.

Protect your laptop from damage: If you have a laptop invest in a good case for your laptop to protect it from damage when traveling. Also, get a screen protector, which is a thin sheet of plastic that you place across your screen to prevent scratches.

Consider using a picture password: If your computer or laptop is in a spot where other people surround you, consider using a picture password, which is almost impossible for people to get past. Also be aware that using a pin rather than a password is probably the least secure way to go because it’s so short and made up entirely of numbers.

Backup and Storage

In the recent past, most computers came with an optical drive where you could insert a DVD and play a movie or music. If you buy because all the projects in my other classes counted as exam credit. Even better, I actually did well on my math exam (a pretty big accomplishment for me, a girl who lacks talent in all STEM areas). The day after exams finished, one of the biggest moments of my life occurred.

I’ve written about Kenyon College several times, mostly about my undying love for it, which developed in my sophomore year of high school. I knew that if I somehow got in, it was exactly where I needed to go. On Dec. 15, while riding in a car with my friend, a Gmail notification popped up that read, “Kenyon decisions have been released.” I wasn’t home, wasn’t with my family, but I couldn’t unsee it.

Should I open it? My friend told me I had to open it right away, and I didn’t need much convincing. With my phone shaking from my quivering hands, I logged into my admissions portal, clicked the tab that indicated an updated result, and saw a large, animated, purple thumbs-up move across my screen, revealing an electronic acceptance letter. My friend and I couldn’t stop squealing with

a software program, it may come on a DVD, so you can use a built-in or external drive to install it. Today, many new computers and laptops don’t include an optical drive for reading DVDs, partially because you can so easily stream video from an online source without ever handling a DVD. Most computers today do have USB ports. USB ports accommodate a USB stick, which is a small plastic-coated gadget (aka…flash drive) that can hold a lot of data. They come in sizes from 2 gigs to multiple terabytes (a whole bunch). The brand is not important, but the price is driven by the size. Good deals can be had with mid-size external drives so shop around and on the internet. The stores don’t carry a wide variety to choose from.

excitement. I could not believe it. This acceptance meant so many things: the waiting game for college was over and I could withdraw my applications from other universities, I would be spending a whole year with my sister at both of our favorite place, and I had fulfilled my goal of attending the college of my dreams. My joy was shared by friends and family, all who had believed in me, and were excited to share in my good news.

I felt like my friends and I were finally catching a break after months of hard work.

Earlier in the day, my friend had heard back from a different school, which made for her fourth college acceptance. Other friends of mine were either finishing up scholarship applications or receiving acceptances of their own. And best of all, we finally had two wide open weeks of winter break to breathe and enjoy the holidays.

My excitement, however, was diminished a bit by my anxiety around a speech tournament the next day. My nerves around speech this year have become a monster in my life - it has been an anxiety I have never experienced before, one that has brought shaking sobs and headaches. I had always competed with a partner. This was my first time performing alone. The morning of the competition, I was surprised by two NDA grads that came back over break to judge the competition. Being close friends with both of them, their presence eased my nerves immensely. Even better, after surviving the day (but feeling terrible about how I performed) my coaches told me that I

was only one spot away from making it to the final round. The sun couldn’t stop shining on me.

However, the biggest blessing of my winter break was going to Kauai with my friend and her family for the holidays. I spent my 18th birthday there, on a catamaran, gliding along the Pacific Ocean, drinking pineapple juice, snorkeling with sea turtles, and having absolutely no cares in the world except to reapply sunscreen. We spent 10 blissful days on the island, waking up each morning to the crashing of the ocean on the black rocks below our condo, spotting rainbows at least once daily, doing yoga overlooking the Pacific, and making rice and veggies for dinner as we danced around the kitchen to new tunes we heard on the reggae station. My friends and I decided we were thriving in Kauai, in every way from a clear head to clear skin. We enjoyed breakfast overlooking mountains and sea, explored the island all day long, and came back to sit in a hot tub nightly. Some evenings, we did our own laundry, before snuggling up in bed together to watch Glee on Netflix. We went to a candlelit service on Christmas Eve, where local community members read scripture and told stories of blessings the island had given them. A beautiful hula dance and Hawaiian Christmas carols wrapped up the evening.

Wrapping up the vacation, we had the opportunity to ride in a helicopter overlooking the island and even zip-lined through the forests of Kauai. If heaven were on earth, it would be Kauai. The people and weather both are amazing, green and blue surround you everywhere, and the entire vibe of the island promotes a sort of ease you don’t find back on the mainland.

All these blessings in December could not have come at a better time for my friends or me. I returned home and spent quality time with my family before Schuyler jets off to Morocco for four months. There’s no doubt that after reconnecting with all my friends on New Year’s Eve, we are rejuvenated and as ready as we can be to take on our last semester of high school.

Mother-daughter open Energy Healing Center

A positive new energy has arrived in Sylvania. The Energy Healing Center opened its doors on Oct. 1. Mother and daughter duo, Cindy Breeze, RN, Reiki master teacher and daughter Julianna Assenmacher, Reiki practitioner, are excited to offer a variety of modalities to assist the healing of the mind, body and spirit of their clients. “I started energy work in 1994,” stated Breeze. “It wasn’t wildly talked about then. Thankfully, people are becoming more aware. People used to come into my home for sessions until we decided to get our own space. We are thrilled to offer our services here in Sylvania.”

What is and is not Reiki

Often the mother-daughter team receives inquiries regarding Reiki. “Reiki is a technique to reduce stress and promote relaxation,” stated Breeze. “We all have energy that extends beyond the physical body. The connection is there but you can’t see it. It is similar to a radio wave, people are unsure of how it works but it turns on. We all have the ability to sense energy and to be aware of it. In my case, when I was 4 or 5 years old, I sensed something. I bet 99 percent of people have sensed something similar that they can’t explain and were not able to harness. Fear often blocks energy.

Love is the healing frequency. I am able to channel energy to address imbalances of the body and support good health and healing.

“There is no good or bad energy,” explained Assenmacher. “People discuss their fitness regiment, their diet, and their spirituality. The piece they don’t talk about is their aura. We assist our clients in healing their entire being; mind, body and spirit. We begin with Reiki because that is the ground work. Reiki is a life force energy, such as Chi, this isn’t anything new. It has been around for centuries. Reiki is a Japanese technique.

Through this technique we are the conduits of energy. We allow it to come through us to manage the different parts of the body and

that tweaks the immune system. Our goal is to balance our client’s “chakras” or primary energy centers. When your energy is balanced, there is healing. We do not take credit for the healing. We are merely the conduits.”

Clients come to The Energy Center for a variety of reasons. Some of their clients come in to prepare for surgery. “We also have people come in before chemo sessions. It helps them to relax and feel they are in a space where healing can take place,” stated Breeze.

Expectations

Their patients have varying experiences during a session. Individuals lie comfortably and fully dressed on a professional massage table or they may be in a seated position. The practitioner gently places their hands beginning at the head and moving to the feet. “Many see colors, some feel like they are having a daydream, a tingling, deep relaxation or they feel nothing. We do a complete ‘tune-up.’ When the energy is coming through, it will go to where it needs to go,” explained Assenmacher. “It’s an overall balance. We get illnesses when we are out of balance. It is a complementary medicine. This is not “talk therapy.” Our clients will share with us, but it is energy work. New restaurant provides warm and fuzzy atmosphere

Thankfully, I finally made my way to Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, located at 3332 W. Central Ave. The new establishment is managed by Sylvanian Maher Salameh, whose family has been part of the Sylvania and St. Joe’s community since 2001. Formerly, Salameh owned his own business in addition to working for Byblos Restaurant. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, which opened its doors in June of 2017, is part of a franchise that began in Fort Worth, Texas. “The owners of this location are some of my best friends,” stated Salameh. “We went to the University of Toledo together. I have known he and his wife for over 27 years. When he moved to Texas, he came to me with the idea for this opportunity.

Two years later, he asked me to be the general manager. I’m a good cook and I appreciate food. I was able to bring my experience and background to Fuzzy’s, having worked with Byblos and running my own business.”

Fast, fresh and fun

The motto of Fuzzy’s is “Fast, fresh and fun,” and my experience was just that. It was not your typical fast food. There is a great deal of interaction between the employees and their customers. “We walk around. We visit,” stated Salameh. “I know many people by name. We create a friendly atmosphere. In many other establishments, you get your food, sit down and eat. We love the ‘Fuzzy’ way of greeting everyone and providing a warm atmosphere for our guests.”

Guests are greeted and directed to where to place their order. After the initial, ‘Are you dining in or out’ inquiry, I was asked how hungry I was. There are so many unique options to satisfy a simple need for a munchie to an expansive burrito bowl or fajita for those who are famished. around their menu. I ordered, was given a pager, and told to relax while I waited.

It’s five o’clock somewhere

I must admit, after the suggestion to relax while I waited for my food, it was a tad tempting not to explore their full-service bar. It was far too early to justify, “It’s five o’clock somewhere,” so I resisted. However, I look forward to exploring their margaritas and other creations on a future visit. Although I declined visiting the bar, I found a table in the area and discovered a fun new place to work.

There are outlets at some tables as well as along the bar that allowed me to “plug in” and catch up on some emails while in a fun environment.

Full of surprises

While glancing at their menu I was surprised to learn that Fuzzy’s also offers breakfast options as well as caters events.

“Chorizo, potato, egg and cheese is my favorite, along with coffee or a mango tea,” stated Salameh. “We also offer catering and recently catered an event for 160 people for the Toledo Chamber of Commerce. We can work with any size event, large or small, and welcome the opportunity to help organizations with their fundraising efforts.” They also have an assortment of “Fuzzy Stuff” from t-shirts, hoodies and hats, to their Butt Burnin’ Hot Sauce available for purchase.

Feeling Fuzzy

I enjoyed my fish tacos, prepared two different ways, and the unique buttermilk based garlic sauce. Even more, it was inspirational to spend time with the general manager who is clearly passionate about pleasing people and their palates and providing them with a warm and fuzzy experience. “I’m meeting new people every day,” stated Salameh. “I am doing something I truly enjoy.

We are hoping to open another location in a couple years. In the meantime, we will keep providing fast, fresh and fun for everyone who walks through our doors.”

Super Snacks for Super Bowl Sunday 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 cup sour cream 1 cup green chiles, chopped 10-ounce can green enchilada sauce ½ teaspoon chili powder ½ teaspoon cumin ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups Monterey Jack cheese or Mexican cheese blend, reserving ½ cup 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded Warm flour tortillas for serving

Taco Dip Cups

Heat oven to 350 F. In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, enchilada sauce, green chiles and spices. Mix well.

Fold in shredded chicken and 1 ½ cups cheese.

Pour into a deep-dish pie plate or 8 x 8 baking dish. Bake for about 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Top with remaining cheese and broil until cheese is lightly browned.

Serve with flour tortillas cut into wedges.

Just when we thought the holiday eating extravaganza was over, we’re smacked right in the face with the second largest food consumption day of the year, Super Bowl Sunday. According to Jennifer Ruple the National Chicken Council, Americans eat over 1.3 billion chicken wings during the big game. That’s enough to circle the Earth almost three times.

Don’t fumble over what to serve party guests, serve wings of course! However, if you are looking for a few extra dishes to go along with them, here are a handful of gamewinning snacks that will surely satisfy your home team.

Pepperoni Pizza Pinwheels

Gain yardage with a big platter of Pepperoni Pizza Pinwheels. These tasty appetizers can be filled with just about anything you can top a pizza with, so feel free to get creative. Serve them with a zesty tomato sauce. Makes 24 appetizers.

Green Chile Chicken Queso Dip

1 can refrigerated crescent rolls ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese ½ cup shredded provolone cheese 4 ounces sliced pepperoni, chopped 2 tablespoons each diced mushrooms, onions, green peppers and black olives 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Parmesan cheese for sprinkling Pizza sauce for dipping Heat oven to 350 F. Coat a mini muffin pan with non-stick spray.

Separate crescent rolls into 4 rectangles.

With a rolling pin, slightly roll out dough in both directions.

Sprinkle each rectangle with mozzarella and provolone cheeses, pepperoni and veggies. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning.

Carefully roll each rectangle then cut into 6 pieces.

Place pinwheels into muffin pan. Bake for 10 minutes or until dough is lightly browned.

Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and serve with pizza sauce.

Green Chile Chicken Queso Dip

This hearty and cheesy dip will get you that extra point. The green chiles give it a smoky heat; you choose the level - mild, medium or hot. For a lighter version, substitute low fat cream cheese and sour cream. Serves 6-8.

1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon ground ginger 2-3 green onions, sliced for garnish In a large bowl, combine meatball ingredients. Roll into 1-inch balls. Bake at 350 F for 15 minutes or until no longer pink.

Drain on paper towels.

In a large saucepan, combine sauce ingredients. Heat sauce over medium heat.

Add meatballs and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes.

Garnish with sliced green onions.

Individual-serving cups are a fun way to present layered dips. These taco dip cups will keep your buffet looking neat, and no one has to worry about double dippers. Makes 16 appetizers.

Asian Meatballs

Roll right on past the defense with Asian Meatballs. These tangy and saucy appetizers put a new spin on the traditional barbecue cocktail meatballs. Makes about 36 meatballs.

Meatballs 2 pounds lean ground beef 2 eggs ¾ cup unseasoned bread crumbs Salt and pepper to taste 3 tablespoons chopped parsley Sauce ⅔ cup hoisin sauce ¼ cup rice vinegar 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 tablespoons soy sauce

Two 16-ounce cans refried beans 1 package taco seasoning 16-ounce container prepared guacamole 8-ounce container sour cream 2 cups shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese 2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced ½ bunch of green onions, thinly sliced 4-ounce can green chiles, drained 3-ounce can sliced olives, drained Sixteen 5-ounce plastic appetizer cups Tortilla chips In a bowl, mix refried beans and taco seasoning. In another bowl, combine tomatoes, green onions, green chiles and olives.

In each plastic cup, layer a scoop of beans, then guacamole, then sour cream. Sprinkle with cheese. Top with tomato mixture.

Serve with tortilla chips.

O’Reilly inducted into Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Mike O’Reilly, former Southview coach and current Toledo Whitmer softball coach, was inducted into the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 19 in Columbus. The OHSBCA Hall of Fame was established in 1972 and currently includes 151 individuals.

O’Reilly is a 1974 graduate of Toledo Whitmer High School. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Toledo. He signed with the New York Yankees in 1978. His first coaching position came in 1980 when he was a volunteer assistant at The University of Toledo. Mike started his high school coaching career in 1981 at Sylvania Southview. During his career, his teams won 421 games at Southview and Toledo St. John’s Jesuit. Over two dozen of his players went on to play in college, with two being drafted.

Twice during his career. O’Reilly was selected to coach in the Mizuno All-Ohio Series. In 1995, he was selected to coach in the U.S. Olympic Festival in Colorado Springs.

Starting in 1996, O’Reilly took on the role of Executive Director and Head Coach of the

Team Ohio program, a position he held for 12 years, which competed in the Sunbelt/ Heartland National High School Baseball Classic in Oklahoma.

Internationally, Coach O’Reilly has been selected to coach and put on clinics around the world. In Australia, he coached a Junior National team in international competition.

He also coached the Sydney Blues in the Claxton Shield, which was a Major League competition. It is now called the ABL. He was also invited to Curacao and Finland to put on clinics and work with national teams.

O’Reilly has been a longtime member of the OHSBCA, ABCA, and NHSBCA. He spent seven years as the chairman of the NHSBCA All-American committee.

Previously he was inducted into the Toledo Whitmer and the Sylvania Schools Athletic Hall of Fame.

He has two children, Cameron and Olivia, who both graduated from The Ohio State University in 2015. Cameron is now an English teacher living in Brazil. Olivia is a third-year medical student at The University of Toledo. .College of Medicine.

The event will be held at the Nederhouser Hall at Olander Park, 6930 Sylvania Ave., on Feb. 10. There will be a dinner catered by Calvino’s, a cash bar and a retrovideo game competition. Senior Donya Esterson sings soprano in the Northview A Capella Choir and Harmony Road Show. She is an active member of the Northview Theatre Department. This past fall, Donya portrayed the role of Charlotte in Northview’s fall musical, Cinderella. Apart from her musical activities, she is a member of N-Compass Diversity Council, a part of the business technology program and president of Sylvania’s Business Professionals of America chapter.

After graduation, she plans to study sales and fashion merchandising. Donya is the daughter of Tony and Janeen Esterson.

Glass City Federal Credit Union is offering five scholarship awards, one in the amount of $2,500 and four in the amount of $1,000 to area students who meet their criteria for the funds.

There are three requirements for scholarship applicants. The student should be planning to attend a 2- or 4-year accredited post-secondary institution during the 2018-19 school year. The student should be a member of Glass City Federal; or have a parent, stepparent, or legal guardian who is a member of Glass City. The applicant needs to complete and submit the required application and essay by the deadline of March 31, 2018.

Sibs ‘N’ Kids Weekend

Lourdes University’s Annual Sibs ‘N’ Kids Weekend allows students the opportunity to host their little sisters, brothers, cousins, nieces and nephews on campus while showing them what it means to be a Gray Wolf. Throughout the weekend, Lourdes students and their young guests enjoy various fun activities.

Lifelong Learning spring lectures scheduled

This spring, the Lourdes University Lifelong Learning program is offering an interesting lineup of lectures and Hot Topics.

The events are held monthly at the Franciscan Center of Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd., in Sylvania.

Lectures are from 10 to 11 a.m. with refreshments offered at 9:15 a.m. They are free for Lifelong Learning members and firsttime visitors.

Hot Topics are offered from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and include a lunch of soup, sandwiches and dessert. Each session is $10 for members per meeting and $15 for nonmembers. Those interested can purchase the entire Hot Topic series at $36 for members and $56 for non-members.

The series starts on Friday, Jan. 19 with a presentation on “Protesting in America,� featuring Lourdes University Associate Professor of Psychology Thomas Estrella and Lourdes University Chair of Sociology & Justice Studies Dale Lanigan. President Trump made his disdain for these actions public and a debate raged over the role of protests in American life.

Stories of Johnny Appleseed are based on the life of John Chapman, a frontiersman who traveled through Ohio and Indiana in the early 1800s. Chapman did more than plant orchards though. He was also an early environmentalist, missionary and real estate investor. He exemplified respect, simplicity and kindness throughout his life.

Doug Bahnsen’s love of early American history helps bring historical characters to life through stories, songs and humor. Bahnsen has been an historical interpreter for more than 25 years, focusing on American leaders who have addressed social, economic and environmental injustices.

The Hot Topic is, “Modern Crime‌Safety & Awarenessâ€? with Sergeant Justin Music, Sylvania Police Division. Criminals today use the telephone and internet in sophisticated scams. Learn about strategies to protect yourself. Sergeant Justin Music from the city of Sylvania Police Division presents an overview of ways to protect yourself and discusses the patterns and crimes police are seeing. This interactive presentation gives easy-to-follow skills when faced with potential victimization.

Lourdes students, student organizations, faculty and staff worked shifts making casseroles over a 24-hour periodto benefit the university’s weekly Toledo Labre project. “The ‘Fill the Freezer’ marathon allows us to more quickly restock supplies and continue offering warm, nutritious food during the cold winter months,� says Sister Barbara Vano, OSF, Director of Campus Ministry and Service Learning.

Have a Heart Restock Drive planned On Monday, Jan. 29, the Sylvania Franciscan Village kicks off its 7th annual Have a Heart Restock Drive to supply personal care items to six area outreach pantries: Bethany House, Claver House, Helping Hands of St. Louis, Our Lady of Lourdes Outreach Soup Kitchen, Sylvania Area Family Services, and USTogether.

The drive runs from Jan. 29 – Feb. 8 with distribution of items occurring on Feb. 9.

Appreciation for those who volunteer

Anyone familiar with youth sports today knows that things have changed greatly since the Mike McMahon 70s, 80s and 90s when many of us participated as young athletes. Most of these changes are for the better, while some can be questioned when it comes to player safety, early specialization and over-use injuries.

One constant, since youth sports were first organized in the 1930s, is that many of the coaches are volunteers and most of the officials, umpires and referees are either high school and college students working a parttime job or adults that truly enjoy giving back to the game or community that they love.

Without these volunteer coaches and officials, youth sports, especially at the recreational and community level, would not be able to operate in the manner in which they do. This is why we, as a community, can always do a better job appreciating, thanking and respecting the volunteer coaches and the underpaid officials for the community service that they provide.

Too often, these well-meaning individuals are heckled, criticized and second guessed by those that don’t have the time, knowledge and or desire to spend their free time giving back. It is important to point out that the vast majority of spectators at Sylvania Recreation sponsored events and facilities are there to enjoy the game

and are respectful to the coaches and the officials. Unfortunately, it only takes one person in a small gymnasium, or at a relatively peaceful ball diamond to negatively affect the experience for the players and all others in attendance. Moving into the New Year, we at Sylvania Recreation feel that this is a perfect time to remind everyone of the opportunity to help create an ever more positive environment at any youth sport event that you attend.

One approach to help accomplish this would be to simply understand each individual’s role at these events. By this I mean; let the coaches’ coach, let the officials officiate and let the players play. If all spectators keep this approach in mind and simply cheer for their favorite player or team in a positive manner, it will no doubt help to create an enjoyable experience for everyone. Too often, it is when someone chooses to step out of his or her designated role and make “suggestions” to someone else that there is a potential for a negative outcome to occur.

Another way to easily make a positive impact would be to take a few minutes and go out of your way to thank your child’s volunteer coach. This coach may not be a master of the triangle offense, but they have filled an important role within our community. Or, after your child’s next game let the referee or umpire know that they did a nice job officiating. You would probably be surprised at how impactful a quick email to a coach or a simple thank you to the official can be.

Sophomore Brenda Conley is in her second year as a member of the Southview wrestling team. She was a mat maid and cheerleader while a student at Arbor Hills. After initial hesitation, Brenda decided to join the wrestling team and hasn’t missed a practice since. Her hard work and dedication paid off at the Start High School Invitational where she earned her first victory.

When asked about this feat, Brenda replied, ‘After two years of attending practices every day, it is worth it once you get your hand raised up.‘ Brenda has a 3.57 GPA and would like to be an English teacher and coach in the future.

For the 10th year, Bittersweet resident Beth Meyer will spend a week training and skiing at Boyne Mountain Resort. She is preparing to compete in the Boston Mills and Brandywine Special Olympics Competition, Feb. 7-8, in

Cleveland, Ohio. Meyer will receive daily twohour private lessons from the best and most experienced ski instructors at the Boyne Mountain Resort.

The Boyne Ski School, Michigan Alpine Competition Council, Toledo Ski Club, and personal funds also help to provide the funding for her to train at Boyne Mountain Resort.

Stephanie L. Dennehy started Cutting Edge Theatre Company in January 2015 with the goal of bringing the highest level of non-equity semi-professional theatre to the Greater Toledo Area. CETC has been working since then to educate the community about seeing new visual arts through plays and musicals. By providing thought-provoking theatre the company creates an intimate experience designed to expand the minds and hearts of both theatergoers and artists. They also offer personal classes to help train local talent for the

transition into professional theatre. Cutting Edge Theatre was recognized in September 2017 at the state competition of the Ohio Community Theatre Associates for its choreography and outstanding performances in the production of Cabaret.

“Little Shop Of Horrors,” a Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, is next up for the troupe. “Little Shop” is about the meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn who stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn. Over time, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination! One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows, this show opens for CETC March 8 to 11 at Olander Park in the Nederhouser Community Hall in Sylvania.

Cutting Edge provides thought-provoking theatre

Exhibit at Secor Metropark

Photographer Bryce Denison has returned to the National Center for Nature Photography gallery with a new exhibit featuring photographs of flora from Central and North America. The exhibit is open through March 30. Hours are Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The Photography Center is inside at Secor Metropark, 10001 Central Avenue, Berkey.

The exhibit celebrates Denison’s search for beauty in nature combined with information about how Native Americans used flowers, trees and various plants as food and medicine. The show features more than 60 large hand printed and framed images. Denison is an awardwinning photographer, noted lecturer, author and artist who has traveled extensively to acquire the images visitors will see in this show.

He has aimed his camera at iconic landscapes, spectacular architecture, wildlife in its natural habitat and people from all walks of life.

Toledo Opera’s stages Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto’ in late January Toledo Opera‘s 2017–18 season will continue with performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Rigoletto at the Valentine Theatre on Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. In this fully staged production, the 16th-century courtly surroundings of the Duke of Mantua are created with a stunning set by renowned scenic designer John Conklin and the lavish, period costumes are by internationally recognized costume designer Victoria Tzykun.

This recent co-production of Boston Lyric Opera, Atlanta Opera and Opera Omaha was created by Atlanta Opera’s General and Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun, who will be in Toledo directing it. An acclaimed cast, the Toledo Opera Chorus, and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra will be led by Toledo conductor James Meena, Toledo Opera’s Principal Artistic Adviser.

Verdi himself called Rigoletto “revolutionary” in form and style and considered it his best opera. The plot in short: The Duke of Mantua’s wandering eye causes a curse to be placed which throws his Jester and his court into turmoil ending with tragic consequences. Acclaimed baritone Anooshah Golesorkhi will sing the title role of Rigoletto with Canadian soprano Magali Simard-Galdès appearing as his daughter Gilda. Italian tenor Raffaele Abete will sing the freewheeling Duke whose impudent aria, La donna è mobile, was heard on the streets of Venice right after the

opera’s premiere there in 1851. Bass Matthew Curran plays the assassin Sparafucile with Leyla Martinucci portraying his sister Maddalena and rounding out the cast is Ashraf Sewailam as Count Monterone. The production is sponsored by Welltower, the Toledo Opera Guild, and Elizabeth T. Wolfe for the Wolfe Family Foundation with additional support from the Ohio Arts Council.

In addition to lectures for ticket holders one hour before each performance at the Valentine Theatre given by Bowling Green State University musicologist Dr. Eftychia Papanikolaou, Toledo Opera will host a “behind the scenes” Tuesday Talk at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 at Registry Bistro. Free and open to the public, the talk will be an opportunity to hear about the opera and the production. A wine reception ($10) will follow the discussion.

She is employed by the Wood County Committee on Aging while he works in his family business, Brieschke’s Bakery. A January, 2019 wedding is planned.

Roger J. Baker

Roger J. Baker, “Doc” was born in Toledo, Ohio, Oct. 29, 1928, to Roger M. and Roma Jones Baker and passed away Jan. 1, 2018. He grew up in the Village of Lathrup, near Detroit. Roger attended The University of Illinois for undergraduate school, and The Loyola School of Dentistry, graduating in 1954. He was stationed in the Brooklyn Naval Yards as a Navy dentist from 1954 – 1956.

Roger married Virginia Hook Jan. 22, 1955.

They would be celebrating 63 years of marriage this year. After finishing his Navy service, they moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he started his dental practice. Roger practiced dentistry in Toledo for over 50 years. He always had a new joke for his patients, and was, in fact, the dentist that would ask a question when he had his hands in your mouth!

He had many outside interests that included volunteering at the Toledo Zoo, sailing on Lake Erie and the Gulf of Mexico. He was a Mason for 50 years, and recently received his 50-year membership award. Roger loved Sanibel Island, Fla. He was especially proud of discovering paradise in the 1970s. Rog was a runner before it was “cool.” Roger and Ginny were longtime supporters of the University of Toledo Lady Rocket’s basketball team. He was a longtime member of Christ Presbyterian Church.

His grandchildren remember his quizzing them on historical facts, flying kites on the Sanibel beach, Hobie and Sunfish rides, the Valhalla (his sailboat) and all the learning experiences he opened up for them.

Roger is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Virginia, children; Jane (Joseph) O’Bryan of Granger, Ind., Sally (Ron) Davis of Perrysburg, Ohio, Roger (Sheila) Baker of Sylvania, Ohio, and his sister Linda Murphy of Waterville, Ohio, 10 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Franciscan Care Center, and Promedica Hospice for their loving care of Roger. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Alzheimer’s Association or Christ Presbyterian Church.

James Palmer

James L. Palmer, 87, of Maumee, Ohio, passed away Jan. 4, 2018, at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Jim was employed with the signal department

of Conrail for more than 42 years, retiring in 1992.

Harold B. Johnson Jr.

Harold B. Johnson Jr. 85, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away, Jan. 12, 2018, at ProMedica Flower Hospital. He was born June 15, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, to parents Harold B. Sr. and Beatrice B. (Bowman) Johnson, and they preceded him in death.

Harold was a 1950 graduate of Macomber High School. He graduated from the University of Toledo with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Harold served as the production manager of International Operations for the Surface Combustion. A career spanning more than 66 years and 11 trips to mainland China before retiring in 2016. While at Surface, Harold enjoyed playing in the company golf and baseball league.

He was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church, Toledo. At the church, Harold served twice as Church Council president, was an assistant minister and Lay Reader, was a member of countless committees, and was a member of both the Senior Choir and Bell Choir. Harold has been involved with the Toledo Area Ministries, providing personal care items to many needy local families.

He was currently serving as the treasurer of the Monroe County Genealogy Society, a position held for many years.

Patricia A. Lawnzak

The day which we fear as our last is but the birthday of eternity. For Patricia Ann Lawnzak, 83, of Sylvania, Ohio, that birthday of eternity occurred with her last breath on Jan. 9, 2018.

The winding path that would lead her to eternity began with her first breath on Jan. 3, 1935, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Ernest L. and Myrtle Catherine (Childs) Graham. The path would eventually lead her to another important January milestone, the day Patricia would marry Toledo native Ora L. Lawnzak, Jan. 23, 1954, in Washington, D.C. The two would welcome their son William the following year. Patricia’s path eventually brought her to the Toledo area, where she worked at many businesses as a cleaning professional. Although the path to eternity was fraught with cruel twists and turns, Patricia carried on, finding comfort in the small things in life: a sip of cold ice tea; a hug from a teddy bear; a cheer for her favorite team, the Washington Redskins; a shopping and dining excursion with friends; an old movie or television show; a card in the mail and, of course, her birthday.

Waiting to celebrate Patricia’s eternal birthday were her parents, husband, and son.

Patricia will be missed and cherished by best friends, Bonnie Hughes and Carole Sutton, along with their extended families; the daughter she never had, Cindy Pfaff; the granddaughter she never had, Stacy Gregory; and niece Susan Zacharias. Mary Maeder

Mary Maeder, 101, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Jan. 3, 2018, at the Ebeid Hospice Residence, Sylvania, Ohio. She was born June 6, 1916, in Mansfield, Ohio, to parents Melville and Florence

(Deck) Koontz.

Mary was the owner of the Korman Muffler Co. located in Cleveland for more than 30 years, before retiring in 1975. She was a licensed single engine commercial pilot and an instrument-rated helicopter pilot. Mary was a member of the Whirly Girls Incorporated, a group of female helicopter pilots.

She was the widow of Phillip Wenclaw and Oscar Maeder Jr. Mary is survived by her special friend and caregiver Sami I. Sayegh; and nephew Roy Retzloff and his family.

Gregory Plant

Gregory E. Plant passed away Nov. 17, 2017, at the age of 67. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on Dec. 4, 1949.

Greg was a 1967 graduate of Sylvania High School where he starred in basketball and baseball.

He was an All Ohio selection in baseball in 1967 and was inducted into the Sylvania Schools Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers and later played baseball at Bowling Green State University.

Although his career led him to call many places home during his lifetime, he remained a lifelong Ohio State Buckeye fan. He spent his final years in sunny California near family.

Greg was loved and respected by many. He was known for his big stature and hugs, his sincere heart and always offering a good word. He proudly worked for FedEx and enjoyed playing tennis regularly with friends at the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club.

Greg is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly Plant, two daughters Nikki Plant and Natalie Smith; two grandsons Justus and Evan Smith; his mother, Evelyn Plant, and brother Jeff.

Evelyn Putinta

Evelyn Roberta Putinta, 76, of Lambertville, Mich., passed away on Jan. 15, 2018, at Ebeid Hospice Residence in Sylvania, Ohio.

Born Jan. 14, 1942, in Lambertville, Mich., she was the daughter of Earl and Bernadine (Roberts) Burno. A graduate of Bedford High School, she married the love of her life, Donald Putinta, in 1960. Evie was an avid admirer and collector of Fenton Glass, having an extensive collection. But most of all, she

enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother as the matriarch of the family. She will be greatly missed.

Evie is survived by her husband, Donald, children James (Robin) Putinta of Temperance, Mich., and Michael (Autha) Putinta of Jackson, Tenn., five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sisters Judy McLelland, Suzanne Harrigan and Janet Harrell, brother Gerald Burno, and several loving nieces and nephews. Evie also leaves behind her dearest friend, LuAnn Fraley, who never left her side. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Pamela Burno and her daughter Lori Anne Putinta.

A special thanks to the staff at Ebeid Hospice for their compassionate care given to Evie in her time of need, and to Father Bill for his compassionate grace shown to our family.

Carol Schumaker

Carol Ann (Harless) Schumaker was born April 4, 1936, in Toledo, Ohio, to parents Ralph and Kathern (Schneider) Harless. Carol married William Ellis Schumaker in 1954, who was serving with the USN Reserves, and was employed with AT&T. When the Navy activated William in 1957, they were both sent to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and resided on the base.

When they returned to civilian life in Toledo, she was soon employed with Society Bank. Over the years, and with several banksponsored finance courses, Carol was promoted to assistant vice president. Society Bank then became KeyBank. Carol, who was

the small business manager, was placed in charge of taking over the local Sylvania Bank, and setting up the finance center in their new building, plus managing to two other branch banks at the same time.

Most recently Carol has attended Westgate Chapel CMA where she served as Deaconess, and Sunday School teacher. Carol also started a singles group for 50+ members in her home.

When she was almost 40 years old, Carol decided to enroll at Lourdes College of Sylvania, Ohio, where she graduated and served on its board of directors for several years.

Carol traveled the world learning about other cultures and, had many adventures, traveling to 80 countries.

Carol is survived by her caregiver and husband of more than 60 years, William, grandsons Shannon, Michael (Rachael) and Devon Schumaker; and great-grandsons Braydyn and Braxtyn.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents and son Douglas Schumaker.

Norman Lewallen

Norman J. Lewallen, 57, vice president of Teamsters Local 20, passed away Jan. 15, 2018, at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo Inpatient Unit.

Norm began his career with Local 20 in 2002 as an organizer. He became a business representative in 2007, and was appointed as trustee on the executive board in 2010. Norm became vice president in 2014. He was the current state cochairman of construction in Ohio and Local

20 director of solid waste.

A lifelong Toledo Speedway supporter and participant, Lewallen attended races watching his late father Norm Lewallen Sr., and went on to become a second generation driver. The younger Lewallen started his racing career in 1974 and continued for the next 30 years. He competed in the Street Stock and Late Model divisions at Toledo in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and in the ARCA Sportsman division from 1999 to present, with a dedicated band of family and crew members supporting his #4, most notably the late Charlie Austin, crew chief, and the late Stacy Fackler, chief mechanic.

Norm, in addition to being a feature winner on the Toledo Speedway ½ mile track in Sportsman competition, was the 1993 and 1994 ¼ mile Factory Stock Champion with multiple feature victories.

To say that Norm Lewallen was a passionate, hard core, devoted, faithful, and true-blue University of Michigan Fan is an understatement! He was all that and much more.

Norm is survived by his loving daughters Amanda (Tony) LaPoint, Melissa (Thomas Tkaczyk) Lewallen and Annie Lewallen; special favorite daughter, K-9 Lucy; son Brandon Arnal; grandchildren Frankie, Raegan, Kaitlyn, Paxton, Landry, Makayla, Memphis, and Mylee; sisters Victoria (Lee) Lopez and Paula (Dennis) McGee; brothers Tim (Lori) and Bedford Lewallen; and Life Partner, Cheree Herring. He was preceded in death by his parents Norman Sr. and Jacqueline (Kelly) Lewallen; son Andrew Lewallen; and sister-in-law Mary Lewallen.
