•Sept. 9-11 Community Bell Casting Toledo Memorial Park Participants of all ages are invited to assist in the creation of the last call bell during the two-day casting event in September. The community will help load 500 pounds of bronze pieces into the furnace through an ‘ingot brigade.’ The bell will be poured, cast and polished on site. The family-friendly event, planned for Sept. 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will feature live music, food vendors and touch a truck. The completed bell will be dedicated with a special ceremony and inaugural ringing on Sept. 11 at 9 a.m.

ev up your engines for the Toledo Memorial Park Annual Car Show!

Over 200 classic and sports cars will be at the event. This is the fourth year for the event that supports Wreaths Across America. All donations will benefit the organization that honors veterans laid to rest at the Toledo Memorial Park by laying wreaths on their graves during the holiday season. The car show will be held Aug. 20 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Toledo Memorial Park, located at 6382 Monroe St. in Sylvania.

of veterans in early December. Wreaths Across America is a national organization that lays wreaths across America including Arlington National Cemetery. We are actually successful enough to purchase a few wreaths to be placed in Arlington as well. Our mission is to not only decorate graves but to remember, honor and teach. It is important to teach our children to honor those who have served. There is no charge to get into the event but guests may purchase a wreath at a specified location.”

Recently, Kingston has received several workplace and care-related awards. In recognition of the contributions made by its employees, Kingston has hosted numerous cookouts and celebrations.

To honor Kingston’s employees for making the company the “Best Work Environment� according to Toledo City Paper and for its NRC Health Excellence in Action award, Kingston recently hosted a cookout for its Sylvania campus to honor its employees’ dedication to an excellent work environment. In addition, over the past 12 months Kingston has hosted celebrations for its designation as “Best Nursing Home� in northwest Ohio and in recognition of Kingston Residence of Fort

Wayne’s safe operations and practices.

To show their support at each of these celebrations, Kingston’s CEO George Rumman and CFO Kent Libbe have flipped burgers and served employees. Jed’s Fireballs & Brew is now open in Timberstone Center on Sylvania Avenue “We have brought a whole new energy to this location,� offered Jed’s General Manager Sydney Height. “Our specialty, ‘Fireballs,’ boneless, hand-cut chicken tenders come in 12 different varieties and can be served with a sauce of your choice,� she offered. Height noted that there are nine different sauces from ‘Mary Jane’ to ‘Hot’ and ‘Super Fly.’ The menu also includes wings, six potato offerings, appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, chicken entrees, fish & chips and ribs. According to Height, Jed’s features daily specials and a daily happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. featuring adult beverages. Half price appetizers are available after 9 p.m. “We encourage families here, and kids can eat free on Wednesday,� Height pointed out. “Unlike other similar restaurants, we do have a

family-friendly environment,� she pointed out. “We also have a sports focus with our 11 TVs and a projector to feature major sporting events,� Height said. “In addition, we offer a full bar selection with 16 taps and many bottled beers. We also feature a more extensive wine selection than most sports bars,� she added.

The new eatery with its seating capacity of 120 patrons, has a staff of 10 servers in the front of the house and five on staff in the kitchen. “This is a locally owned family business,�

Height said. “Our owners are committed to the community and are developing relationships with Southview and other schools in the area,� she said.

Jed’s is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, to 11 p.m. on Thursday, and to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Zepf Center has opened its new Ambulatory Detox Unit. Serving up to 12-16 people per day, the unit creates an additional level of care and expanded access for those in need of drug addiction services in northwest Ohio. The unit will provide treatment for individuals in need of assistance with withdrawing from addiction and have an appropriate, safe home environment to go to each night. The Ambulatory Detox program is a six-day program, which operates from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admissions are accepted from the community through Zepf Center’s Intake department located at 2005 Ashland Ave. This is a medically monitored unit with physicians,

nurse practitioners, nurses, licensed counselors and case managers. Overnight support is available through a 24-hour-a-day hotline staffed with licensed providers. Recovery Substance Free Housing may also be available if needed.

Operating as one of the few certified Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services ambulatory detoxification units, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, Zepf Center’s Ashland Avenue treatment facility provides the broadest and most specialized continuum of care for addiction treatment in the region.

EAO Sports commemorates third anniversary in new facility

“We are taking our athletes to the next level,” noted Dan Jones, EAO Sports founder and owner. “Our athletes are making their own statements, and many of our high school students have committed to NCAA Division One schools to play their sport. We also have athletes from all over the world who are coming here to train.” EAO Sports is located at 5415 Schultz Dr. He cited three Jit-Jiu-Jitsu world champions who traveled to Sylvania from their home country of Brazil to train. Andrew Hammond,

a goalie for the NHL Ottawa Senators, also calls EAO his training ground. According to Jones, countless other top athletes have found their way to EAO. “We are growing by leaps and bounds,” he said. “The EAO brand has become highly recognized for delivering great athletes.

We also work with many local athletes including several teams such as the Sylvania Tsunami Swim Club, the Toledo Cherokee, Northview and Southview swim teams, Whitmer and Bedford hockey, Toledo Dynamic volleyball and many more. I am also the director of strength and conditioning for the Toledo Walleye professional hockey team.

In addition, we work with numerous amateur athletes who just want to get better.”

Marcia Pisanti serves as general manager of the facility and Connor Frey, former hockey national champion and longtime Dan Jones trainee, is part of the management team. In addition, Dr. Mickey Frame, chiropractor for the Walleye, is on staff with the EAO team.

Some recent success stories include NV grad Alden Hirschfeld, captain of the Walleye, and St. John students Dallas Grant who recently committed to Ohio State University football, Mitch Berg, UT football, Joey Sofo, Alaska Anchorage hockey, and 16-year-old Notre Dame Academy student Katherine Rex, Jones’ youngest athlete to ever be offered a Division One scholarship for softball at age 14.

Jones, a Northview High School hockey player in the 1980s, found himself working out and lifting weights in the off season. “I really developed a passion for getting into shape and working out. I learned everything I could about nutrition and what else was needed to be a great athlete and that passion continues today,” Jones stated. “I have been doing this for over 30 years along with having a regular job, and now I am able to devote all of my time to this business.”

When he is not training other athletes, Jones spends time weight lifting and is a champion body builder, competing regularly and doing motivational speeches to teams, schools and corporate America. He also provides the pregame warm ups and offers the pregame motivational talks for the Toledo Walleye.

Jones is available to address groups of all size, age and interests.

Joe’s Auto celebrates anniversary with sales, free car In celebration of 27 years in business, Adam Smidi, owner of Joe’s Auto Sales, 3538 Holland-Sylvania Rd., is offering specials on auto sales through the month of August. “Car shoppers can expect to find the lowest prices of the year,� he stated.

Smidi explained that since his father began the company, the inventory of vehicles has always included cars that are between 8 to 10 years of age that could be sold at affordable prices of $5,000 or less. spends a good bit of time here every day. His strong work ethic shines through, and he continues to find things to do such as washing cars or developing new marketing strategies. He always has something special going on such as promoting a sale for every season. He even came up with the idea to offer free bottled water to those using the bike trail that runs right next to our building,� Smidi said.

He added, “Through the years, my dad has also developed great relationships with all of the new car dealers, and he continues to work with them to acquire used vehicles from them.� And because the dealership buys and sells used vehicles, Smidi, early on, developed partnerships with local auto mechanics to check out the cars he would buy and fix to get them ready for sale. Later, he added a full-service shop in the company headquarters building for the cars that are bought and sold. “We also provide service for our vehicles after the sale.�

Smidi continued, “My dad has high standards and has always used an inspection process that reflects those standards, something we continue today. We have always balanced affordable with dependable.

We also believe in the highest of customer service and satisfaction.�

That emphasis on customer service and satisfaction also led the Smidis to provide short-term financing for customers if necessary. “We have found that many of our customers do not have the cash necessary to purchase a vehicle even if it is very

According to Smidi, shortly after his dad arrived in the area from Lebanon, he ran across a stranded motorist whose car had broken down. He tried to help and when he couldn’t get the car started, he loaned the stranded driver his own car to get him where he needed to go. Smidi bought the disabled vehicle, was able to repair it and ended up selling the car at a profit. That success gave

him the incentive to buy more cars, fix them, and sell them.

By 1990, Smidi was ready to start his business. He opened a seven-car lot at 3538 N. Holland-Sylvania Rd., where he could do his buying and selling. As the business continued to grow and the car lot was expanded, the original office building was demolished and all transactions are handled in the newer office that fronts the full-service shop.

my wife has always been into coffee. But I spent many years in the corporate world and it wasn’t until last January that we finally decided the time was right for us to combine our two dreams into a business,” he said.

“We looked for space in Toledo, Perrysburg and more with our Realtor, Aaron Wiens of Tolson Enterprises. When he showed us this space in Saxon Square, we thought it was perfect for what we wanted to do. In a short amount of time, we were able to redo the space, and we were ready to open on May 19,” Jones reported.

The shop offers a wide variety of games from tabletop to board and war games for customers to try and to buy. “People can also bring their own games in and play on one of our war game tables. They can try different demo games as well,” Jones explained.

Unlike other gaming establishments, Dragon’s Roost features a large coffee/tea bar. “We have custom-roasted light, medium or dark coffee from Glass City Roasters, and we feature a full coffee menu. We offer 13 different tea flavors and also serve Italian sodas. We have over 65 different syrups, so there are almost unlimited choices for our customers,” he pointed out.

In addition, the Joneses feature sweet baked goods from Bakery Unlimited and savory baked goods from Sofo’s. “All of our baked goods are baked fresh every day, and we continue to refine our menu to keep everything fresh,” Jones noted. “We also make it a point to do business with other small locally owned businesses,” he said.

As game sales have grown 25 percent since opening, and coffee and tea sales are also on the rise, the Joneses are looking at expanding their space in the near future.

The Wellness Center opens in downtown

Dr. Kassandra Schultz, chiropractic physician, has relocated her practice, The Wellness Center, to the Thormont Building and shares space with licensed massage therapist, Chris Raszka, who moved to the space two years ago.

Schultz had been practicing in a small section of space at 5333 Monroe St., sharing the area with Jeff Gears Martial Arts studio and Ilovekickboxing.com. Schultz joined Gears in this venture four years ago combining her chiropractic and Ilovekickboxing.com.

“Many of my patients were kickboxing students and instructors. I have been involved in martial arts for over 23 years as well as kickboxing. I know about the injuries people can incur with these activities and I know how to treat them,” she stated. “In addition to traditional chiropractic procedures, I also use a low force instrument adjusting using the Activator, along with an procedure, gua-sha and Eastern kinesiotape.”

Schultz continued, “But now, my practice has outgrown the space that was available to me and my patient base is becoming more diversified and are not involved with martial arts or kickboxing. I also found that with my growing patient load, I was clogging up the kickboxing space. And, he loud music played during a kickboxing class is really not conducive to the practice of chiropractic.”

She mentioned that she was planning to scale back her appointment schedule and that her office could be available on Wednesdays and Friday mornings. That is

remembered. “My grandpa took me to a chiropractor who helped me in a short amount of time. From then, I knew I wanted to do the same thing.”

After graduating from The University of Toledo, Schultz received her chiropractic training at Palmer College of Chiropractic.

She joined a private practice following graduation and also was a martial

arts instructor for Jeff Gears. When she left that first practice, she opened The Wellness Clinic in conjunction with Ilovekickboxing.com and the Martial Arts Studio.

Schultz is available for appointments Wednesday from 9 a.m. To 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Mr. Gibbs owned a well-established hardware store in downtown Sylvania where a young man named Alberti R. Chandler started working. Mr. Chandler met the boss’s daughter and married her in 1890, and by January of 1891, Mr. Gibbs transferred the hardware business and property into his daughter’s name, Julia S. Chandler. At that same time, he also gave her the property next door to his house on N. Main Street. In 1897, Julia had a son and named him Roy A. Chandler. In 1900, they built their house next to her father. Mr. Chandler, being in the hardware business, used nothing but the best in constructing this house.

Alberti, his wife Julia, and their child Roy are listed living in this house in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. Roy was married in 1922 to Genevieve Lochbihler, and they constructed the home at 5932 N. Main Street, just to the north of his parent’s home. Roy’s parents had previously moved his grandparents old home over to Summit Street. Then in the 1930 and 1940 census, Alberti and Julia were listed living at 5916 Main St. while their son and daughterin-law were living next door to the north.

Mr. Chandler was very successful in his hardware business, and also was a very publicspirited citizen. He was interested in projects to make Sylvania a better place to live. Besides

operating a well-established hardware store from 1891 until 1947, he organized the Farmers & Merchants Bank in 1899 and served as their president until 1940. In 1945, Mr. and Mrs. A.R Chandler celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. At that time he was still an active businessman, an enthusiastic fisherman, bowler and golfer. Mr. and Mrs. Chandler’s favorite hobby was horticulture and for over 20 years they supplied the bouquets of flowers each Sunday morning at the Sylvania Congregational Church from their own garden for all to enjoy. After church, Chandler would give each family present a couple of the flowers and the sick were also always remembered by the Chandlers with flowers. They supplied the flowers for special events such as weddings, school functions and church and club affairs in Sylvania. Mr. Chandler died in 1947 at the age of 78 years, and his wife Julia Gibbs-Chandler died in 1954.

Shortly after Mrs. Chandler passed away, their home was sold to Carl and Margaret Kasky. They lived in this house from 1954 to 1960. Their children were: Bryan, Philip, Lynne and Gale. The Kasey’s sold the home in 1960 to life-long Sylvania residents Floyd E. and Evelyn A. Holdren, and the 1960 Polk Suburban Directory shows that the house was vacant at this time. By the time the 1961 Polk Directory was printed Floyd Holdren was listed as the owner and occupant.

In July of 1962, Sylvania City Council approved the “spot zoning” request for the property now owned by Floyd Holdren at 5916 Main St., to allow two families to live on one parcel. Floyd and Evelyn had three children: Terry; Mary and Victoria. They sold this house in 1965. Evelyn Holdren died Oct. 6, 2001, and Floyd Holdren died April 7, 2004.

In 1965, William K. and Patricia A. Howard purchased this house. They lived here for 25 years and sold in 1990. He owned and operated Howard Gas & Oil in Sylvania. William, who was born and raised in Sylvania, and Patricia had six children who lived in this home: Shelley; Judianne; Julianne; Edwin; William and Patricia.

In June of 1978, Howard was issued a building permit to replace the existing garage with a 24-foot by 42-foot new garage.

In 1990, the Howards sold this house to Mark and Jill Dallas. They had both grown up in Sylvania and raised their three sons, Pen, Nick and Andrew, in this house. Mark and Jill own and operate J & G Pizza Palace in Sylvania.

They lived in this home until 1999 when they sold it to James V. Roscoe and Claudia K. David.

According to the Toledo Legal News, dated Jan. 22, 2016, a sheriff’s sale was scheduled for March 23, 2016, at 10 a.m. to offer for sale at public auction the following described lands:

Parcel No. 82-00520; 82-00521 and 82-01071, all situated at 5916 N. Main Street. The appraisal was listed at $220,000.

The house sold that year to Lynn Marie Schmidt for $258,000 according to Lucas County AREIS Online.

The Toledo Lucas County Public Library has recently finished up the Summer Reading Challenge at the two Sylvania branches, as well as system wide around Lucas County. The theme this year was “Build a Craig Stough Better World,” inviting participants to think creatively and critically about how we can make the world a better place for all, but especially tomorrow’s children.

The research is clear; programs that encourage summer reading and learning activity counter the “summer slide” that kids often experience during their summer break from school. The Library system surpassed its registration numbers from last year with nearly 20,000 participants countywide.

In addition to other take home materials and prizes, one grand prize for five lucky kids will be an honorary Mayor For A Day in Sylvania, Toledo, Maumee and Waterville. Sylvania’s two lucky winners are SRC participants and siblings Jack and Samantha Budas, who both attend Sylvan Elementary. Jack, 8, who is in the third

Leaf Pick Up

Batanian Tree Service has been awarded the contract to augment Sylvania Township road department crews in this year’s leaf pickup. Rob Nash, superintendent of the department, said the Sylvania Township company entered a winning bid of $532.50 per hour. When needed, the company uses dump trucks, front-end loaders with drivers as well as laborers to collect leaves which have been raked to the curbside by property owners.

Leaf pickup will begin the third Monday in October with the last cycle scheduled to begin Dec. 1. Contracting firms are usually called on when the leaf-fall is greatest and typically work an average of six eight-hour days.

Unlimited Pick-Up

Sept.11 is set as the date for the annual collection of no longer wanted household goods. That will also be the day when the township begins its brush collection. For brush collection, township crews will take leaves, branches and limbs left on property at the edge of the street. Grass clippings should not be mixed in and branches and limbs should be no more than six feet long or six inches in diameter. They should be separated from each other as well as from the household items.

Rob Nash, Street Department Manager, said that people should put items to be picked up at the curb the night before to ensure they aren’t missed during the one pass through the community. He cautioned that items should not be put in the street. He said crews will begin at multiple locations on the first day and will continue until all household items have been picked up.

Items to be collected are limited to books and papers, which must be bundled; carpeting, cut and rolled no longer

grade, and Samantha, 10, a fifth grader, are the children of proud parents Dave and Katie Budas.

I had the opportunity to participate in programs at both Sylvania library branches – one for high school students and one for preschool children. On July 25, I attended “Teen Tech Night: Robotics at Your Library” at the new King Road Branch where members of the Southview Cat Attack Robotics Team gave a review and demonstration of their successful competition robot, and even let some of us drive it.

On July 27, I joined the “Preschool STEAM” at the Sylvania Branch on Monroe Street. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics for guiding student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking. We measured each other’s faces and made paper plate faces with the same measurements.

We are fortunate to have a modern and active library system in Lucas County serving Sylvania. We have a new library on King Road, the newest in Lucas County.

The Sylvania branch on Monroe Street is now closed for remodeling. By this time next year, we will have two modern libraries open in Sylvania, one near each high school, serving our residents with a broad range of materials and innovative services.

than five feet; empty containers and drums, appliances without refrigerants, furniture, mattresses and box springs, (furniture legs over 12 inches must be separated); toys and non-hazardous miscellaneous material placed in a disposable container.

Stevens Disposal and Recycling Service of Temperance has been contracted for the service. Its contract calls for payment of $350 per ton of items collected. Sylvania Township crews will be collecting brush.

Nash noted that it may take a few days as crews must cover 176 miles of roadway.

Zoning Change Approved

Sylvania Township trustees have approved a zoning change that will allow for an apartment complex to be constructed between McCord Road and Wilford Drive, about midway between Central Avenue and Elmer Drive. The complex, to be known as Adirondack Village Villas, is planned to have seven, six-unit buildings, and one four-unit building. All of the structures will be onestory and each unit will have two bedrooms and two bathrooms with attached two-car garages.

Lucas County and Sylvania Township plan commissions had earlier recommended approval of the zoning change. Some area residents voiced objection to the development because it will be rental units rather than owner-occupied and some also decried the loss of trees in the currently undeveloped 6.7 acres.

Dennis Noneman of Noneman Real Estate Co. told trustees that the development will be similar to others he knows of in the area and that the renters who will be most likely to occupy the property will be working professionals or retired professionals.

He also noted that there will be gates at both the Wilford Drive and King Road entrances to the project. Their purpose is both for the privacy of the occupants as well as to keep motorists from using the private street as a short cut. He noted occupants will have the ability to enter as will fire, police and any other emergency vehicles.

Latta tours Wingate

Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) toured the Wingate by Wyndham in Sylvania as part of the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s “Heart of the House” hotel tour program to meet with hotel employees and see firsthand the career opportunities granted in the hotel industry. Following the tour, Congressman Latta participated in a roundtable discussion with AHLA, the Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association, and more than two dozen local hoteliers on issues facing the industry. Topics discussed included travel and tourism promotion, consumer protection, and the positive contributions hotels offer to the local community through job growth and economic development.

Ohio hotels generate more than $3 billion dollars in tax revenue every year while guests spend more than $8 billion annually during their hotel stay, playing a vital role in strengthening the state’s economy.

Hasn’t this summer been delightful?

Morning temperatures have almost guaranteed a dew on the lawns and flower beds each sunrise.

Rainfall has been a bit spotty by location, but overall adequate for all Rick Cozza that is growing in our yards. And the lack of sweltering 90+ afternoons has kept annuals, perennials and woody trees and shrubs from withering in the sun. All-in-all a perfect season for your yard.

What that means is significant. Trees and shrubs are decorating themselves right now with their new growth buds for 2018, like the old schedule of 2018 model automobiles being introduced in the early fall. Same principle. And a good-weather year versus ‘hot/dry’ can mean that each little bud contains the beginnings of 5 vs only 2 leaf buds, depending on this summer’s conditions.

Sooooooo, I wouldn’t hesitate to say that the buds for next year will be at the optimum, much like the Coaches’ Poll ranking Ohio State and Michigan in the possible ‘Top 10’, based entirely on pre-season conditions.

Can you help guarantee that they produce as predicted? Yep, you can. Be sure to water, water, water if we suddenly develop a lowmoisture late summer/ early fall. Be sure to scatter some general-purpose fertilizer (1010-10 for example) around your shrubs, perennials as the leaves begin to fall in October (or “Octobuary,” as my daughter said as she learned her months many years ago, which goes along with this month - - ”Hogust”).

Rake up your leaves this fall, and dispose of

DR. BOB ESPLIN IN THE LICK OF TIME There are many stories about veterinary medicine, clients, animals and cases that have had an effect on me during my 47 years of practice. One unusual event that stands out in my memory happened during the Bicentennial year of 1976. That event brought about a variety of endeavors to celebrate the two-hundred-year anniversary of our great country. A really unique happening was the bicentennial wagon train that wound its way across the country to arrive in Washington, D.C., in time for the big event. Dozens of horses, wagons and people dressed in clothing of the time made the trip from one scheduled stop to another.

Sylvania’s Olander Park was one of these designated stops.

My newly started practice was only two years old in 1976 and I was providing care for horses as well as house pets at the time.

When the train arrived at Olander and set up camp I received a call that a couple horses needed attention. It was a very routine visit that took about an hour and I headed back to SylvaniaVET. That evening, just as I was about to leave the office for home, the wagon train leader called and asked if I could I come back ASAP as they had a very sick horse. He stated, “The farrier says, it is road founder and he has it walking in the lake.” I replied, “I am on my way and get the horse out of the water and into a quiet place.”

The presence of the wagon train had been advertised and many area residents had come by Olander to experience the wagon train. They found a vet doing an exam on a

them somewhere other than your garden, since my experience this spring indicated that a wet winter under leaves will indeed rot your grasses and perennials. Be sure that your planting beds have a 2” to 3” layer of Hardwood Mulch instead.

My daughter Andrea has a birthday in late October, so this year for her new house and birthday, she is getting fall bulbs for the front walk and the driveway entry. My perusal of the Colorblends bulb catalogue (colorblends.com) found a group of like-hued fragrant Hyacinths and similar-colored Crocus for the front walk (‘Hokus-Crocus’ is the name of the blend of bulbs), and I will send Andrea 25 Hyacinths and 100 Crocus to plant together. It should be awesome in April.

They live along an Ohio-designated ‘Scenic Byway’, so I am sending bright Daffodils and purple Alliums for along the street. That will give them a start in their new home (they obviously have other priorities, and would likely not get to planting fall bulbs this year).

But it will give their weary spirits a lift in the spring, and possibly motivate them to continue planting next season. At my house . . . we have been here for 6 years now, so I am taking a hiatus from bulb planting this year.

We have done at least 500 per year for these six years . . . whew!

So, a good spring, and a good summer. In your own yard, follow-up and do the things I have suggested to enhance our ‘pre-season predictions’ for 2018. And, by all means, add some tulips, daffodils, fragrant hyacinths, crocus or perennials to your yard this fall (order now). You will love me in the spring (if you don’t already), when all that color magically surprises you. Your yard has gotten itself ready for 2018 by now, and it just wants you to know how hard it has worked to get to this point in the ‘preseason.’ Do your part to nurture it along, and to say ‘thank you’, and ‘Wait till next season!’ horse an item of real interest. Now, an unusual fact about horses is that they do not vomit. In vet school we were told that if a horse vomits, it is going to die, quickly. My exam determined that the horse did not have road founder, which is basically very sore feet causing pain and lameness. Rather, I was concerned about a bad case of colic. One exam tool veterinarians use on horses is a rectal exam to determine if there is an impaction. During this exam, the horse I was examining vomited. “Ok, the young new vet just killed this horse with the community watching,” was the thought that raced through my head. Sedation and pain medications enabled us to refer it to MSU for possible colic surgery. The horse made it to MSU but unfortunately, it died before surgery, not from my exam (thank goodness) but from the stress of traveling from Wisconsin to Sylvania, which caused a condition called Colitis X. Of all the cases I have worked on over the years this one, with it being part of a national public celebration, still comes back to me as one of the most unique and memorable.

Customize the Start Menu in Windows 10

The return of the Start Menu is a pretty big deal in Windows 10 and that’s because you’re likely to spend quite a bit of time with it. Whether it’s using Janis Weber it in the more traditional Windows way or using Cortana to search for content on your PC or the web, it’s a welcome addition. Pulling in the tiled user interface from Windows’ tablet mode means you get to access Live Tiles all without exiting the desktop mode. If you’re not a fan of how these tiles look or how they are arranged, this is something you can fix.

Simply hover the mouse cursor over a tile and right click on your mouse or the right side of your touchpad. Now you’ll see options to resize tiles to make them smaller or even wider.

You can also pin programs to the task bar at the bottom of the screen or remove (Unpin) from the Start menu altogether – holding down on the tile does the same thing on a touchscreen.

The new Start Menu is amazing. Once you get it the way you want it with the shortcut you use often, you will discover the convenience of the new and improved look.

Open File Explorer to This PC One of the more annoying quirks of Windows 10 is that the file Explorer by default now opens to a view of your recently used files and folders, putting access to the list of your drives an extra click away.

Thankfully you can change this back to a more familiar view by heading to the View ribbon at the top of Explorer, clicking on Options and changing the drop-down menu from Quick Access to This PC. Check out the other options when you get to this point. If you don’t understand then “Google” the terminology and find out what cool things you can turn on and off.

Play Xbox One Games on your Windows 10 PC One of the nicest additions to Windows 10 is its integration with Microsoft’s gaming console, the Xbox One. Game streaming lets you beam titles from your console to your laptop/desktop in another room. You could say it’s Microsoft’s competitor to Remote Play streaming on the PS4 and PS Vita, though it’s a far better implementation. The simplest way to

activate it is to open up the Xbox app on your Windows 10 PC, ensure your console is on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network and tap the Xbox One symbol you should see appear on your PC or laptop. There is a slight lag introduced by playing this way but for slower paced games it works brilliantly.

Genealogy classes offered at Senior Center “Through genealogy, you can discover what makes you unique,” noted Patrick McVicker, who returns to the Sylvania Senior Center in September to teach genealogy. The two-hour classes begin Friday, Sept. 8, with a morning and an afternoon session, and continue for eight weeks. Classes are from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 to 2 p.m. There is a limit of eight people for each class. The fee is $44.

McVicker has been teaching a genealogy class at the Senior Center for four years. “I like to teach, so after I retired, I put a proposal together and here I am,” he chuckled.

“I really got started when I was 12 years old. My dad was always interested in the subject and he ran the genealogy library in Perrysburg for years,” McVicker recalled. “It

was a lot harder then as everything was done manually,” he recalled.

“I was able to go back four generations on my family tree growing up but it took quite a bit of time. Now, with computers and the internet, one can trace four generations in a couple of days,” he promised. “I like looking at my family history, and I like knowing where I come from,” McVicker said.

McVicker now has traced one line of his family tree back to the year 0049 but said he can’t find sources for proof. He also has traced another line to the 1600s.

In his classes, McVicker helps students learn how to go about researching their own family trees. “I teach ‘Google’ genealogy,” he explained. “I also help students become familiar with those websites they can use for their searches and the records they can access that are helpful. We explore how to search for ancestors with no known name. We also look at how to ‘trim your family tree.’

However, I let the class dictate where we go and what we emphasize,” McVicker pointed out. “Students will have homework in this class and if they follow my instructions, I can almost guarantee that they will find at least four generations,” McVicker promised.

In addition to teaching, McVicker serves as a volunteer, manning the help desk for four hours Sunday through Thursday for familysearch.com, receiving calls from around the world with genealogy questions.

Cold, fruity sangria for hot summer nights

Nothing cools off a steamy summer evening like a refreshing, fruity pitcher of sangria. The drink originates from Spain and is served in many Mexican restaurants; however, it’s easy to mix up a pitcher at home in just minutes.

First, choose a bottle of red or white wine, either sweet or dry, whichever you prefer. For an extra kick of flavor, add a splash of brandy, rum or flavored schnapps.

Slice up some fruit - limes, oranges, apples, peaches, berries - whatever you love or whatever’s in season. For extra sweetness, stir in a few tablespoons of sugar or honey. Feel free to experiment - there's no wrong way to make sangria.

Chill for several hours or overnight to allow the fruit to soak in the liquid and the flavors to meld. For a little fizz, add some club soda or sparkling water right before serving. Pour over ice, sip and enjoy!

In a pitcher, combine the wine, peach puree, brandy, syrup, blackberries and sliced peaches. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Serve the sangria over ice in red wine goblets. Garnish the goblets with sliced peaches.

Mexican Street Corn (Elote Asado)

Coated in cream and rolled in crumbled cheese, Mexican Street Corn or Elote Asado is a popular way of serving grilled corn at festivals and markets in Mexico. Soaking the corn in their husks prior to grilling keeps them from burning. Plus the steam that’s produced inside the husks keeps the corn moist.

Servings: 6 6 ears corn on the cob in husks 1 tablespoon butter, melted ½ cup Mexican crema or sour cream 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 lime 1 bunch fresh cilantro Cotija cheese or other crumbling salted cheese such as feta

Eating your veggies has never been easier. It’s that time of year when farmers markets are in full glory with piles upon piles of corn on the cob, tomatoes, zucchini and fresh herbs.

Take advantage of this Jennifer Ruple season’s bounty and cook up some farm fresh dishes. Here are three of my favorites.

Zucchini Noodles with Sun-dried Tomatoes, Basil and Pine Nuts

Skip the pasta and create zoodles, zucchini made into noodles with a spiralizer. You can use a knife to make the zoodles; however, a spiralizer makes the job really fast. This recipe will serve four people as a side dish or two people as a main dish. Don’t want to skip the meat? Grilled shrimp or chicken would be a great addition for this ready-in-minutes dinner.

Zoodles with Tomatoes, Basil and Pine Nuts Servings: 2-4 4-5 medium zucchini 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced ¼ cup pine nuts, toasted ¼ cup sun-dried tomatoes, drained Fresh basil, thinly sliced Freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Salt and freshly ground black pepper With a spiralizer, cut zucchini into noodles.

The strands will be long, so cut them about the length of spaghetti.

In a deep skillet, heat oil over medium heat.

Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Add the zoodles and cook for 5-7 minutes, turning with tongs, until they begin to soften but are still al dente like pasta.

Add sun-dried tomatoes, basil and most of the pine nuts. Toss with tongs and cook for 1 minute.

Remove pasta mixture from pot and place it in a large serving bowl.

Add salt and pepper to taste. Top with grated cheese, more basil and remaining pine nuts.

In a large bowl or bucket filled with water, add corn in their husks. Cover with a plate to be sure corn stays immersed in water. Soak corn for about 1 hour.

Heat grill to medium. Place corn on grill and cook for 15-20 minutes, turning with tongs occasionally.

In a small bowl, combine crema, chili powder, juice from half of the lime, and two tablespoons of chopped cilantro.

Remove corn from grill and allow to cool slightly.

Remove husks and silk and brush corn with butter. Grill for another 5 minutes over high heat.

Remove corn and brush with the crema mixture. Roll corn in cotija cheese and sprinkle with more chopped cilantro and lime juice.

Herbed Goat Cheese and Heirloom Tomatoes Crostini

A perfect party appetizer or light lunch, mini toast, aka crostini, can be topped with anything you can dream up. Here’s a recipe to help you use up all of those extra cherry or mini heirloom tomatoes.

Servings: 12 appetizers 8-ounce loaf French bread Olive oil 5 ounces herbed goat cheese 1 pint mini heirloom tomatoes, halved Chopped fresh herbs, such as chives and basil Freshly ground black pepper Heat oven to 400 F. Slice bread into 12, ½inch thick slices. Brush with olive oil. Bake for 5-6 minutes until lightly browned.

Spread each slice of bread with herbed goat cheese. Top with tomato halves. Sprinkle with fresh herbs. Drizzle with olive oil and finish with two grinds of black pepper.

Patrick O’Brien, superintendent of parks and forestry for the city of Sylvania, plants Asclepias tuberosa or butterfly milkweed along both sides of Monroe Street at U.S 23,

one of the gateways to the city.

According to O’Brien, the orange blossoms blend well with the yarrow that was planted along that stretch earlier in the season in addition to the Hamlyn’s Dwarf Fountain Grass or bunny tails that had been planted several years ago. ‘It is also in keeping with the mayor’s recent Monarch pledge that we make every effort to plant flowers that will support the Monarch butterfly. Also, these plants are very hardy and can withstand the heat and full sun along with the conditions of a very busy roadway,’ pointed out O’Brien.

Ann Galloway

Ann Marie Galloway, age 93, passed away Aug. 2, 2017, at St. Clare Commons in Perrysburg with her beloved family at her side. Ann was born July 6, 1924, to the late Peter and Mary Blazer in Haskins, Ohio. She was a graduate of St. Ursula Academy, attended Case Western Reserve University and the University of Toledo. Ann was the executive secretary to the president at Willys Overland before starting Galloway Travel with her husband, Bob. Ann lived an extraordinary life. Her commitment to family extended well beyond involvement in all her children’s lives to creating an extended family in the Toledo area and to a greater global community through her contributions to the Sister City International organization. She held many positions with the Toledo Opera, serving on the executive board, council, and as chairman of the Sapphire Ball three times, raising over $100,000. She also raised over $160,000 for the Toledo Symphony as chairman of Razzle Dazzle, and $105,000 for the Ursuline Foundation. She served on numerous boards, including St. Vincent Medical Foundation, Lourdes College, Lourdes College Foundation, Toledo Symphony, Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Centennial, Ohio Hospital Organization, Samagama, Ohio State University Alumnae Association, March of Dimes, Ursuline Development Council, St. Francis de Sales, Village Players Theatre, Republican Club, Franciscan Life Center, and Toledo Botanical Gardens. Ann was a life member of the Toledo Area Animal Shelter, a liaison to the Ohio Arts Commission, a member of the League of Women Voters, and also of the Pan Pacific/Europe Group.

Ann was very active with Sister Cities International and held many leadership positions with it including vice-president of the SCI board, chairman for the National Young Artists Program, the executive director search committee, the Jesse Philips Memorial and for the 40th Anniversary Souvenir Magazine. She was co-chairman for the personnel committee and the marketing committee, was vice-president of Toledo Sister Cities International, a member of the Polish/American Alliance, the Hungarian Club, the Jamaican Club, and the International Institute. She initiated and founded the first successful YMCA in Spain, initiated and developed large scale scholarship and exchange programs, founded the Renee Joseph

Scholarship Fund, and raised countless dollars through fundraising for various local, national and international projects.

Ann’s community, national, and international involvement didn’t go unrecognized. She was the Toledo Woman of the Year, received the Northwest Ohio Distinguished Citizen Award in 1986, the Outstanding Trustee Award-St. Vincent Medical Center, the Crescendo Award- Toledo Symphony, the Marguerite D’Youval AwardGrey Nuns of Montreal, the Special Citizen Award-Szeged, Hungary, and was inducted May 23, 1986, into Spain’s prestigious La Orden Del Eslabori, the only North American woman to be so honored.

Ann’s stories were just as amazing; tea with Princess Grace, Lunch with Mikhail Gorbachev on his yacht, attending bullfights in Spain with King Juan Carlos, meeting and shaking hands with the Dalai Lama. She survived Hurricane Hugo on a transatlantic crossing on the Queen Elizabeth II, and still unsinkable went whitewater rafting in Alaska at 73 years young.

Ann was a longtime member of Gesu Catholic Church and a current member of Little Flower Catholic Church. She was a 46year member of Sylvania Country Club, a 50year member of the American Society of Travel Agents, and was treasurer for SKAL International, an organization dedicated to promoting all phases of travel. She was active with the Sylvania Senior Center where she wrote and directed the very popular Senior Follies for 11 years.

Ann is survived by her children David Galloway (Karen), Tom Galloway (Donna), Cassie Bertke (Brent), and Sue Richardson (Scott); grandchildren Bob Galloway (Michele), Mollie Galloway, Kate Galloway, Sara Busch (Ken), Ann Grimes (Justin), E.J. Bertke, Regan Clute (Lanyon), Elizabeth Kremer (Nick), Thomas Richardson and Griffin Richardson; great-grandchildren Audrey, Avery, and Zada Galloway, Ivy, Morgen, and Logan Busch, Renee and Charlie Kremer and Ellys Bertke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Galloway in 1998.

Carmen Sturt

Carmen T. Sturt, of Sylvania, Ohio, died peacefully in her sleep July 30, 2017, at Heartland in Sylvania. She was born to Roberto and Bertha (Bazan) Lucio on Feb. 13, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas.

Carmen was a 1956 graduate of Springfield High School. She worked as a teacher’s aide in Sylvania Schools for many years, teaching English as a second language to foreign students. She volunteered at Manor House, Wildwood and for the Girl Scouts. Carmen had a true love of nature and enjoyed her travels throughout the country with her late husband, John. Her ability to nurture others did not go unnoticed by her family and friends, as she was always there in their time of need. As the matriarch of her extended family, she was a devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother “MiMi.” She is preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, John, siblings Mary (Ernie) Salinas, Bob (Irene) Lucio, Stanley (Mary) Lucio, Jessie Lucio, Connie (Bill) Salinas, Vera (Ernie) Clark and Steve Lucio. Darlene J. Busse, 66, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away July 26, 2017, at University of Toledo Medical Center. She was born June 5, 1951, in Toledo, to Michael and Josephine (Klepac) Charchol.

After graduating from Whitmer High School, Darlene completed cosmetology school. Darlene enjoyed the sun, being outdoors and the warm weather. She treasured her time living in Colorado and always wanted to move back. She loved her family and cherished her grandchildren. She will long be remembered as a strong, proud, and thoughtful woman.

Peter McHugh

Peter James McHugh, age 53, of Sylvania, Ohio, died Aug. 1, 2017, at Ebeid Hospice. Peter was born Aug. 11, 1963, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late James and (O’Leary) Margaret McHugh and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1981. He earned his undergraduate degree from Miami University in Oxford and his law degree from the University of Toledo.

Pete worked as Assistant Lucas County Prosecutor before entering private practice in Criminal and Defense Law. He was a partner with Jasin, Sallah & McHugh in Toledo. Pete was proud to be an attorney as he believed deeply in the justice system and felt that everyone deserved representation.

He enjoyed being involved in the Toledo political scene, helping others with campaigns, and serving as president of the Toledo Police Athletic League.

A devout Catholic who loved the Mass, Pete was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sylvania. His fall and spring Miami reunion trips were treasured times

with friends for Pete. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football and the Detroit Tigers.

Outgoing, kind, and social by nature, he was a friend to all who crossed his path and was a terrific husband and proud father. Pete attended his kids’ sport, theater, and dance events throughout the years, and was always available for spontaneous, lively debates at home. He lived life to the fullest, and was often heard commenting, “I am the most blessed guy.”

Surviving are his mother, Margaret; wife, Mary (Sell) McHugh; children Hilary and Claire Parlette, Jimmy and Jane McHugh; siblings Joe McHugh and Ellen Angeles (Kevin); sister-in-law Barb Mowry; and brother-in-law Rob Sell. Peter’s father preceded him in death.

Memorials are suggested to The Cullen Center, The Toledo Police Athletic League, and St. Francis de Sales High School.

Gail Papenhagen, 74 of Riga, Mich., passed away July 27, 2017, at Aspen Grove, Lambertville, Mich. He was born Feb. 15, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, to Norman P. and Doris (Viers) Papenhagen. He married his high school sweet heart, Rita M. Philabaum, in

1962, and she remained in his heart for 55 years and together they raised two daughters.

Left to cherish Gail’s memory are daughters Darlene (Duane) Burgoyne; Kelly (John) Ortmann. Sisters Pauline Leogrande and Suzanne Aldrich. Grandchildren Brent (Brandy) Marriott, Kevin Marriott, Scott (Laura) Marriott, Samantha (Blake) Dressel and Megan Ortmann and special friends Dean and Rhonda Sass. Gail was preceded death by his wife, Rita, (1997), parents and brother Gerald.

Gail worked for S. A. Storer & Sons as a brick mason for 30 years, retiring in 1997. Before then, he worked at Independent Dairy and Kaiser Jeep. He was a member of the International Bricklayers Union and Local Union 3 in Toledo. Gail worked hard and played hard, his hobbies included: gardening, golf, hunting at the family cabin, fishing, snowmobiling, four-wheeling and flying his six-shooter power parachute. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren watching them play sports, going on trips up north and simply sitting with them and sharing stories of his and their adventures. Gail always enjoyed “projects” whether it being his own or a neighbors or friend. He was a man who was devoted to his family and community.

JoAnn Smith

JoAnn Louise Smith, 88, of Holland, Ohio, passed away July 27, 2017, at Elizabeth Scott Memorial Care Center, Maumee, Ohio.

She was born May 1, 1929, in Sandusky, Ohio, to Alexander and Leona (Uncle) Ocker.

JoAnn Ocker married her true love Walter Smith in 1948 and enjoyed 56 years of marriage until his passing in 2004.

She was a longtime and active member of Living Faith Methodist Church in Holland and was a very loving, caring, involved grandmother and great-grandmother. JoAnn enjoyed cooking, along with being a talented and creative baker, loved to browse and shop mail order catalogs.

She is survived by her loving family; son Tom (Connie) Smith Sr.; daughter Eva Smith; grandchildren Amy (Ed) Osinski; Tom (Sonja) Smith Jr.; great-grandchildren Katie, Abbey, Megan, Sammi, Nolan. JoAnn’s husband, parents, and brother preceded her in death.

Victor Madalinski

Victor J. Madalinski, age 88, passed away July 28, 2017, at Ebeid Hospice Residence. He was born Aug. 20, 1928, in Toledo, Ohio, to parents Frank and Cecelia (Gawrych) Madalinski. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.

Vic worked for several road and construction companies including Pierce, Schoen and retired in 1991 from Buckeye Paving. He also farmed acreage near Fayette, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilyn (Myers), and sons Michael, Palm Springs, Calif., Mark (Amy), Blissfield, Mich.,

‘Songs for the New World’ Northview High School Theater Boosters and the Sylvania Community Arts Commission will stage “Songs for a New World” Thursday, Aug. 17 through Sunday, Aug. 20 at the Northview Performing Arts Center. Curtain time for performances is 7:30 p.m. except for Sunday, which is at 2:30 p.m.

Songs for a New World is about one lifechanging moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice ... or take a stand ... or turn around and go back. These are the stories and characters of today. The first musical from Tony Award-winner Jason Robert Brown, this moving collection of powerful songs examines life, love and the choices made.

Brown transports his audience from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship in 1492, to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue, introducing it to a startling array of characters. There is a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto or a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage. Songs for a New World will impact audience members long after they leave the theater.

Brittany von Stein The Colorado Music Educators Association recognized Brittany von Stein, choir director for Basalt High School and Basalt Middle School, with the 2018 Outstanding Young Educator Award.

This annual prestigious honor is given to music educators in their first five years of teaching who have shown significant proficiency in the classroom and respect in their school community, according to the CMEA. The award recognizes notable commitment to the art of teaching as well as

a demonstrated ability to achieve excellence.

A Northview graduate, von Stein has served as the BHS/BMS choir director for two years, after having graduated in 2015 from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a minor in Vocal Performance and Theatre in 2015. Under her tutelage, participation in the choirs in Basalt Middle School and Basalt High School has nearly tripled, from 80 choir students in 2015-2016 to at least 210 anticipated in 2017-2018.

Twenty-four community members, including students, parents, school administrators and teachers, provided letters of recommendation and testimonials for the nomination packet, detailing von Stein’s enthusiastic teaching ability, passion for music, and personable and patient nature.

The CMEA award letter noted: “This tribute is a public acknowledgement of her quality instruction, belief in kids and love for music education. It is also a testament to the positive influence she has on those around her.” She will receive a plaque and recognition at the annual CMEA conference.

NV student vocalist selected to attend Songbook Academy Sylvanian Sara Lewandowski was one of 40 vocalists in the nation to participate in the Songbook Academy® in Carmel, Ind., on July 15-22. The Songbook Academy is a summer music intensive for young singers who have an interest in the American Songbook. Students who love the music of classic Broadway shows, jazz and popular music have an opportunity to work with award-winning singers and performers, and educators from the top music and theatre programs in the country.

Founded by five-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein and now in its eighth year, the Great American Songbook Foundation’s annual Songbook Academy® is the only high school intensive in the United States focused on the timeless pop, jazz, Broadway and Hollywood standards that have come to be known as the Great American Songbook. The 2017 Academy, sponsored nationally by the Central Indiana Community Foundation’s Efroymson Family Fund, was held at the Songbook Foundation’s headquarters, the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Sara Lewandowski Awards are presented for excellence in several categories, and top performers are invited to represent the Songbook Foundation and sing with Michael Feinstein at such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the nation’s top cabaret clubs.

Lewandowski will be a junior at Northview High School this year and is the daughter of Doug and Patti Lewandowski.

New Faces in Sylvania Schools

Kyle Lacy is the new principal at Arbor Hills Junior High School. He began his education career in 2004 as a math and science teacher in rural and urban settings after receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Findlay. ‘I am excited about Sylvania because of the history of the community and schools coming together and working for each other and about being in an education system that has so many opportunities for growth for the students and staff that it serves,’ he said.

Andrew Duncan has been named principal of Whiteford Elementary School. A graduate of Springfield High School, he received his bachelor’s degree at Harding University in Searcy, Ark., and earned his master’s degree from Arkansas State University. He has been in education for 11 years. ‘I came to Sylvania to join a team of teachers and administrators who expect greatness and provide a quality education and experiences to students. I greatly look forward to serving the students and staff at Whiteford and preparing students to be life-long learners and engaged citizens,’ he said.

Father Jim Bacik lectures planned The Sylvania Franciscan Village presents the following lectures by Father Jim Bacik. Focused on Pope Francis, these lectures are held at the Franciscan Center of Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd., in Sylvania.

“Pope Francis and His Critics on Gender Issues” will be Thursday, Aug. 24, 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The lecture is an exploration of the charge that Pope Francis holds a theory of gender complementarity that limits the role of women in the church and society, with attention to the problem of unrecognized sexist language and the possibility of women deacons.

The second lecture is entitled “Pope Francis

and His Critics on Economic Issues,” which will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Bacik will examine the fundamental moral teachings of Pope Francis on the economy and the main criticisms of economists who claim the Pope does not understand the accomplishments and dynamics of free market capitalism.

Russell J. Ebeid leaves lasting legacy Russell J. Ebeid, who died July 30 in his Bloomfield Hills, Mich. home, has left a lasting legacy in the Sylvania area. According to Randy Schimmoeller, ProMedica’s senior vice president operations, Continuum Services and Social Determinants of Health, “Russ made several significant contributions including the Ebeid Hospice Residence on the ProMedica Flower Hospital campus and the ProMedica Ebeid Institute for Population Health in downtown Toledo. He connected with Randy Oostra’s vision of ‘people caring for people.’

What best sums up his involvement is the Winston Churchill quote: ‘We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.’

Ebeid’s legacy lives on through what he has given back, which is of incredible benefit to ProMedica, Sylvania and the entire area,” he said. Ebeid served as a member of the ProMedica Board of Trustees.

His generosity also extended to Lourdes

University where his granddaughter Kristina had received her business and nursing degrees.

She became a ProMedica nurse.

“Russell J. Ebeid was a remarkable individual and good friend to Lourdes University. He was a current member of the Board of Trustee and his support has made a lasting impact on our students,” stated Lourdes President Mary Ann Gawelek.

Thanks to his philanthropy, facilities that bear his name include the Ebeid Student Center, where students can relax, study and spend time with friends; the Russell J. Ebeid Hall, the site of classrooms and faculty offices; and the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center, where students can work on their personal fitness. It is also home to the Gray Wolves men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. This fall, it will also house the gaming arena for the inaugural Gray Wolves e-Sports team.

Lady Cougar Soccer Team Plays Alums

The alumni versus the 2017 Southview Lady Cougar Soccer team game was held at Southview High School, which boasts the best grass high school field in the area. The alumni match was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation time, leading into penalty kicks saved. The current high school players prevailed and captured the win. Southview took part in the Sylvania Super Scrimmages held at Pacesetter Park last Friday and Saturday. Although a small roster they competed, winning 7of 8 games.

Southview is looking foward to the season coached by Majd Ali and Shawn Comes. Returning varsity seniors and this season’s captains are Maddy Crandall and Melissa Jacoby. Junior captain is Makenzie Ortman along with juniors MaKayla Hill, Abigail Mann, Ella Schneider, Lexi Hough, Elizabeth Farthing and Sophia Brown. Sophomores returning are Maya Topleski, Ellie Pool, Hailey Osaklovic and Taylor Legall. Incoming freshman Gabby Johnson, Ryah Haider, Sarah Higginbotham, Melania Gromes and Alyssa Cruz are all welcome additions to the Southview team. Southview’s home opener in Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.

boxes and then smashed down the boxes,” stated Macy. “It was a healthy way for them to get out that grief instead of pushing someone at school. They also made superhero shields and put together a comic book of what makes them happy and sad and what they do to keep themselves strong. They learned that they can have good memories and have fun even though they have lost someone.”

Chaplain Fink saw first-hand the positive effects that the camp had on the children. “The camp offered so many wonderful experiences for the children,” he stated. “We had a music therapy group and many of the older kids wrote songs about their feelings. We had

wonderful guests including a visit from the Toledo Zoo and therapy dogs greeted the kids every morning and said goodbye to them when they left. Many children exhibit negative behaviors after a loss and often pull away and are tentative with others. It’s often hard for parents to let kids come to camp because they are also experiencing loss and want to hold on to them. The stories these young kids are telling us are incredible. Some of the kids have been placed in foster care. They are superheroes in my eyes. This program is so vital. We will definitely be doing it again next year and looking forward to offering bigger and better things for these kids in need.”

ProMedica Hospice hosted a free bereavement day camp for youth, ages 5-16, on July 25 to July 28 at Sylvania First Methodist Church, located at 7000 Erie St. A graduation ceremony was held at the completion of camp with “superheroes” handing out certificates.

This is the first year the event was held but the sister office in Clyde, Ohio has hosted a similar camp for the past 11 years. Chaplain Bill Fink, of Sylvania First Methodist Church, stated, “The program started with an identified need in Fremont and Clyde and grew from there.

More and more families need programs that address grieving.”

The objective of the camp was to provide an opportunity for children who have lost loved

ones a safe place to talk about their experience with other children who have had similar experiences.

“We encourage the kids to talk about what they have been through at their own pace and in their own time. They open up and we share healthy ways to cope,” stated Kelly Macy, a ProMedica Hospice social worker who is part of the program. “We teach them to express themselves. After we welcome the kids and go over the camp rules, we have lots of physical activities to work out what we call ‘grief energy.’

The kids also bring memories for our memory tree. They begin to realize that they are not the only one in their position.”

The children also participated in small and large group activities to help them deal with their loss. “We constructed buildings out of

Program provides work experiences for students with disabilities

BY MARY HELEN DARAH The Next Steps Summer Program, a component of The Ability Center’s Life Skills Department, prepares students with disabilities for college and post-secondary training. The Ability Center of Greater Toledo is a non-profit Center for Independent Living (CIL) serving northwest Ohio. Students enter the summer program ready to increase their independence and foster leadership abilities.

Community partners and a team of Ability Center staff create a hands-on learning environment that is facilitated on the campus of the University of Toledo. Students gain an inside look at professional employment opportunities at local companies throughout the five-week experience.

Anastasia McGuire, who will be a senior at Northview High School and Donny Stewart, an upcoming senior at Central Catholic High School, participated in the program. Both

Donny Stewart students were paired with local companies and organizations that matched their work experiences to their skills and interests.

McGuire and Stewart had the opportunity to work in the Family Center at the Toledo Museum of Art. “The Toledo Museum of Art participates in the Next Steps Summer Program because, as an employer in the community, it’s our responsibility to help all people acquire the necessary skills to become gainfully employed,” stated TMA Human Resources Manager Siccorah Martin. “The Museum takes pride in assisting in the development of future leaders in the community through participation in programs such as this one.”

Family Center Manager Regina Jankowski believes the students benefited from being part of the program. “Not only have the students benefited from the Next Steps Summer Program, but it’s been a wonderful experience for Museum staff and Family Center visitors.”

A reception was held following the ceremony at the Toledo Club where friends and family gathered to celebrate the couple. The groom is from Hendersonville, N.C., where he serves as an assistant principal. The bride, a former Sylvania resident, is a special education teacher. The parents of the bride are Sylvanians Reeves and Amy Northrup. The grooms parents are Keith and Nancy VunCannon.
