Art to transform utility boxes in downtown

The Sylvania Community Arts Commission is seeking artist submissions to transform six electric and utility boxes throughout downtown Sylvania and the Red Bird Arts District into beautiful vinyl wrapped displays of colorful and inspiring work by local and regional artists.

The SCAC will accept applications for this call for art through June 23. Applications should include complete, partial or modified images of already-created works or works created specifically for this public art project.

Modified work must be original and appropriate.

The committee will accept up to three artwork submissions per artist, with one image file for each work of art. Submissions should be two-dimensional. Artists should keep in mind the shape of the utility boxes and how their work will look on a three-dimensional surface.

The art will wrap around the boxes of various sizes and shapes.

The design must be submitted as a .jpeg and accompanied by a $5 entry fee for one design or a $10 entry fee for up to three designs.

Submissions must be received by 11:59 EST on June 23 for consideration.

Theatre Camp Offered

The Sylvania Community Arts Commission will offer a summer theatre production workshop camp for students ages 10 to 17. This two-week workshop, taught by director Irina Zaurov, will take place at the Franciscan Center of Lourdes University July 24 to Aug. 4. The camp will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. A grand finale staged performance will be held for families and friends on Thursday Aug. 3.

Ribbon cut to open new AAA facility

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held May 12 for the grand opening of the newest AAA Car Care, Insurance and Travel location at 3201 Meijer Dr. This is the third full-service location in northwest Ohio, offering automotive insurance and travel services under one roof. Services are available to AAA members and nonmembers alike.

“We are thrilled to bring our one-stop shopping concept to the Sylvania Township. area,” said Edgar Avila, executive vice president, Northwest Ohio Region. “Travelers can plan a trip or take care of home and auto insurance needs while waiting on car

repairs.”

He added, “AAA Tire & Auto provides car care at the new facility which houses a free air station, already one of the most popular offerings. There is also a special charging station for drivers to power up their electric vehicles.” Officials stress that the focus on car care is an important element in AAA’s mission to improve traffic safety.

“Automotive maintenance helps to reduce the risk of traffic accidents and breakdowns on the road,” noted Avila. “It is important to our customers that we provide quality car care and help keep drivers safe.”

Chris Morris, Katie and Brandon Fields will open Inside the Five Brewing.

Inside the Five Brewing, located at 5703 Main St., plans to open in downtown Sylvania in the spring of 2018. Brandon Fields, along with his wife Katie Fields and friend Chris Morris, plan to convert the space formerly known as Treo, into a brewpub.

The Fields grew up in the Sylvania area and moved to Florida where he was the punter for the Miami Dolphins for eight years. What began for him as an off-season hobby quickly turned into a passion that he now wishes to share with the community.

Brandon and Katie have returned to Sylvania to open Inside the Five Brewing Company with Chris, a six-year NFL lineman veteran and native of nearby Temperance, Mich.

“I first fell in love with craft beer after having Stone’s Arrogant Bastard Ale,” said Fields. “Since then, I have spent a lot of time brewing with and learning from Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, Fla. I have always enjoyed it when friends and family would come over to our house and try the newest beer creations.”

When I was first asked to be a part of the

brewpub, I was unaware of the craft beer revolution that was taking place in this country,” Morris said. “Sylvania will be the perfect location to foster the enthusiasm for unique, locally-crafted beers.”

Fields, the head brewer and CEO will work closely again with Morris, a former Michigan State teammate, CFO, and his wife, Katie Fields. Mrs. Fields will manage and plan all events at Inside the Five. “We want people to learn something about beer, take a tour of the on-site brew house and try something new,” Mrs. Fields explained.

Inside the Five will offer a variety of unique beers on tap to pair with their creative food items. Guests should expect a very casual and welcoming environment that is both family-friendly during the day and social at night.

“In football, when a punter is able to pin the opposing team inside their own five-yard line, that is the best result achievable. Our goal as a brewing company is to create the best recipes for our customers, striving to keep our beers inside the five!”

After researching the subject, she found “The Art of Neighboring,” a book written by Runyon and Jay Pathak.

“This is something everyone can do,” Bassett reflected. “We all have neighbors and the art of neighboring is a simple concept. If you know your neighbors, you can have a dialog with them. Those conversations lead to understanding,” she said.

THE MOUSE TRAP What Internet Speed Do You Really Need?

The internet providers are always shouting that you need more and more speed and they are the only company that can give you the service and Janis Weber speed you require. Take your statement from Buckeye, Frontier or whoever you pay for internet. Someplace on that paper is a number indicating what internet speed you are paying for and the price.

If you don’t see it or are confused, pick up the phone and call them (Buckeye is 419-7249800). Ask what internet speed you are paying for. This is mainly the download speed, which is what downloads information from the internet to your computer. There is also an upload speed but that is how fast you can send information up to the internet or email. There is a vast difference in the numbers.

Now you should search for a website that will measure what speeds you are really getting for the download and the upload. You care most about the download! Here are some suggestions: SpeedTest.net, speedtest.buckeye cablesystem.com or verizon.com/speedtest.

They all work equally as well as the other. You do not have to use your provider’s page to do

the test. Although they all look different they all have a start button and some animation with the number results for download and upload.

Still with me? Great (if not, go back). Jot down the numbers then compare them to what you are paying for. They should be very close although never exact. Remember, knowledge is power. Now, let’s consider how many devices you want to use in your home at a time. I am talking about your smart phone, smart TV, tablets, reading devices, gaming consoles and music through a Bluetooth speaker. Wow, the 21st century sure has changed the way we connect with the world.

Now we ask ourselves if we ran them all at the same time would they function or behave erratically? There is your first clue that your speed is not high enough. Most homes can survive on 10-12 mega bites per second (mbps). If you have a lot of square footage in your home or the router (internet antenna) is not in the center of the building then you will not get great reception. You can move the router to a better location, get a more powerful router and, of course, pay for faster speeds from your provider. 25-50 mbps is more than enough. Sometimes your wallet makes the decisions. There is something else called a repeater or booster that multiplies your signal throughout the house.

If you want to get someplace faster get a bigger engine in your car. It will cost more, but this is comparable to the internet speed. Slow connecting is annoying, but also beware, you may be paying for too much. I have seen that

The lactation station for nursing women offers a safe, clean and functional space to pump or nurse while away from home.

ProMedica Health and Wellness Center has a new space for nursing mothers on the go. A freestanding lactation station for nursing women offers a safe, clean and functional space to pump or nurse while away from home. The station is manufactured by Mamava and is located near Toledo Pediatrics. The station was installed on April 10 and funded by the ProMedica Foundation. There are two other Mamava Pods that were installed at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in 2015.

Dr. Brenda Hartley, MD ProMedica pediatrician, of Toledo Pediatrics has a practice in the Health and Wellness Center, located on Monroe Street, and is excited that moms now have a place to nurse privately.

“Breastfeeding is so beneficial,” stated Dr. Hartley. “The Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months. It helps protect babies from illnesses, ear infections, decreases obesity and gastro illnesses. It is also a bonding experience for mom and baby.”

The pediatrician also believes that the

privacy the space provides is beneficial for nursing moms. “I think nursing alone is a struggle enough for a breastfeeding mom whether it’s their first time nursing or their fourth. Finding a bit of privacy is one less stress,” stated Dr. Hartley. “Our office waiting area is a big open space. The private space offers a quiet place for moms to nurse or pump. It has ample room for mom, baby and a toddler.”

Dr. Hartley believes that many mothers give up breastfeeding when they become frustrated or have to go back to work. “I have seen many women give up and others mothers who refuse to. Roughly 75% hang in there for awhile but is difficult when women have to return to the work environment,” she stated.

Although there are laws that support breastfeeding moms, some mothers feel more comfortable in a private space. “Moms no longer have to hide away in a bathroom.

However, sometimes, nursing can be frustrating and having this new space available will hopefully be an asset for our patients.”

Community Grant Goes to SAFS

Construction nears completion on Central Avenue retail building

Construction is anticipated to be completed by the first of August with a new center at 7452 W. Central Ave., developed by Ken Hicks Jr., co-owner of Diverse Development. Midwest Contracting serves as the general contractor for the 8,250square foot facility designed by Mike Rowe of the Buehrer Group and Dan Stone of Van Horn Hoover Engineering. Jason LaBounty of Citizens National Bank made the financial arrangements for the new building.

According to Hicks, the building will accommodate four to five retail tenants.

“Biggby Coffee will occupy one end cap and will have a drive-through window. Tropical Smoothie will occupy the other end cap.

There is still one space available for lease,” he said. The new construction is on a 1.5acre site.

“This is a great retail location with some of the best demographics in northwest Ohio due to the traffic, population and households in this trade area,” Hicks stated.

Diverse Development was founded seven years ago and specializes in retail real estate development and acquisition in northwest Ohio and now in southeast Michigan.

NAI Harmon Group, a member of the NAI Global network of commercial real estate firms, had a groundbreaking on May 3 dedicated to its latest development in Rossford. The groundbreaking event was for Denver Wholesale Florist and signified their commitment to the construction of the first building located in The Harmon Business Park. The 20,000-square foot building will be constructed by Logan Creek Construction, the general contractor for the park.

“We are proud to be a part of building Rossford. The collaboration with the city of Rossford allowed us to create this opportunity for companies,” said the president of NAI Harmon Group, Ed Harmon.

The project is a commercial effort on the

part of the NAI Harmon Group with the support of the city of Rossford, Wood County Economic Development Commission, and the Wood County Port Authority.

NAI Harmon Group breaks ground JamiLynn Fox of the JamiLynn Fox Allstate Insurance Agency presented a an Allstate Foundation Community Fund to Anita Sanchez-Serda, executive director of Sylvania Area Family Services. Each year, Fox can select a community organization to receive one of the foundation grants.

Lathrop Turner to hire minority pre-apprentices

Lathrop Turner recently announced its commitment, along with several other key local subcontractors, to hire minority preapprentices at the ProMedica Toledo Hospital Generations of Care Patient Tower. These preapprentices will be hired from Toledo Public Schools School to Work Program, Penta Career Center, and other sources. In total, the commitment between Lathrop Turner and the local subcontractors, will afford

approximately 15 minority pre-apprentices to acquire on-the-job training, taking what they have learned in the classroom to the ProMedica Toledo Hospital jobsite. These basic skills will be in electrical, carpentry, HVAC and general trades.

The program is the culmination of many months of focused effort and collaboration between Lathrop, ProMedica, Subcontractors, Union Representatives, TPS, Penta and others.

“Evan St. Jasthane’s Astounding Sideshow,” a solo exhibition of new paintings and prose by Toledo-based artist Steven J. Athanas opened in the Hudson Gallery, 5645 N. Main St. It will be on display through June 30. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

The exhibition features a selection of new drawings and paintings with integrated prose.

After filling dozens of sketch pads with varied and ever-developing characters and their corresponding “poems,” the artist has chosen 12 to fill out the exhibition. “It’s from these pads that the characters in this show were given birth. So, from the plots of the halfcrustacean/half human Brendal Spaetzle, to the

lad seeking fame and fortune juggling poultry, to the autobiographical dude singing the praises of clothes,” he said. “This is who I am, and who is on display in the exhibition.”

Over the past four decades, the artist has always maintained close contact with his sketch pads and their ever-fascinating inhabitants. Dating back to his time as the lead singer in The Raisin Band, the artist acknowledges, “Many a night in some lonely Motel 6 room would have been a lot duller without pencil and paper.”

Sam Perry of Humane Ohio picked up the donation of nearly 1,000 feeding and water bowls, leashes, dog chews and toys from Brian Yeager of Ace Neighborhood Hardware. Customers had the opportunity to purchase the bowls, leashes and dog chews at discounted prices for themselves and were encouraged to purchase a second to donate to Humane Ohio.

Customers were also encouraged to donate extra change, which was used to purchase additional pet supplies.

2017 Safety City

The 2017 Sylvania Safety City will take place the week of June 5 at Maplewood ElCraig Stough ementary School. This will be Sylvania Safety City’s 32nd year, and more than 5,577 students have attended. This year, 177 Sylvania five-year-old children registered and will graduate Friday, June 9. I will be attending the 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. graduation ceremonies and offering the following information about Sylvania Safety City.

Sylvania children are our most important asset, and Sylvania’s version of Safety City helps to get them off to a safe start before they enter school. The children attend either a morning or an afternoon class for five days at Maplewood. Important topics covered include: Memorization of Name, Address and

TOWNSHIP TOPICS Road Resurfacing The Sylvania Township road department is finishing its first large road resurfacing project of the season and will soon begin another.

Crews have been in the St. James area primarily south of Regents Boulevard between McCord Road and Wimbledon. That job included resurfacing Parliament Square. The project covered 1.3 miles.

The next resurfacing project to be tackled this season will be in Westchester Meadows. The streets to be resurfaced are Wood Lake, Wood Brook, Wood Meadow, Meadow Lake, between Central and Fantasy, San Luis Rey and Forest Brook. Total mileage for that project will also be 1.3 miles.

Contract Approved The Sylvania Township trustees have approved a contract with Teamster, Local 20, covering 11 employees in the township road department. The contract calls for two percent raises in each of three years beginning this year and running through 2019. The settlement concludes a round of contract bargaining with the larger labor groups representing township workers.

Rob Nash, manager of the road department, said employees there will also be allowed to accumulate compensatory time. Under those terms, employees can opt against being paid for

Safety City is a memorable experience for the children who attend. When I ask groups of students years later if they remember attending and what they remember, the reacovertime but “bank� those hours with the ability to use them as time off in the future. He added there is a limit of 40 hours in each calendar year. He noted that has been a feature of the police and fire department contracts.

Permits Issued The total number of permits issued this year by the Sylvania Township planning office has increased somewhat this year but the value represented by those permits has nearly doubled.

Through the month of April, the department had issued a total of 126 permits last year, compared to a total of 13 in 2017.

Last year that number represented slightly more than $10 million in value. This year the permits represent construction of things valued at nearly $30 million. Permits are issued by the office for everything from construction of new commercial buildings to fences and signs.

Daryl Graus, manager of the office of planning and zoning, said there is no single large project in the township, which is responsible for the increase in valuation, rather increases across the board. He gathered some information through mid-May. Just in the construction of decks, the number of permits had increased from four in 2016 to seven this year. The estimated value of the total went from over $33,000 last year to more than $86,000 this year.

Through mid-May last year, the total number of permits issued for signs was 43, at an estimated value of $107,000. There have been fewer permits issued so far this year, at 27, but the value had jumped to $167,000. In his report to the most recent meeting of the Sylvania

Township trustees, Graus noted that permits for construction of single-family homes had risen from 28 last year to 34 this year.

The number of those permits has been rising slowly, but steadily for several years now, but this year has shown a spike in valuation. Through April of last year, the estimated value was about $6.5 million, generally in line with the totals of recent years. This year, through April, that valuation jumped to $12.25 million.

Graus noted that in that time period last year, one permit had been issued for a house valued

at $500,000 or more. In the same time period this year, there have been seven, with two of them valued at a million dollars or more. Those prices resulted in a jump in the average value of a new, single-family home in Sylvania Township from $232,142 last year to $360,294 in estimated value this year.

Although there may be no specific reason which can be pointed to explain the increases, it’s clear that there are a lot of people looking to move to Sylvania Township or in one way or another expand and increase their stake here.

Sylvania–Then and Now

As a longtime member of the Sylvania Area Historical Society, I wanted to let everyone know that this year the group has decided to focus on buildings in Sylvania that are 100 years old or older. Historical Society members are welcoming property owners of these structures to share with them any information that they have about their historic buildings, which will be placed in the files for future generations. They are also looking at a plaque program, where property owners could order plaques for their Sylvania historic homes, to be mounted on the front of the home or building and it would display the year that it was constructed. These plaques would be uniform and would commemorate and honor the history of the buildings.

For property owners that own buildings that are 100 years or older in Sylvania or Sylvania Township, who do not have any historical information about their structures, the historical society would like to help these owners research their structure. They have prepared a complete list of “How to Research Your Structure” to help those interested.

As an example of the history that could be found on your structure, over the next several months, I will continue to share some of the histories of various structures throughout Sylvania. To begin this series I will start with my 100-year-old house on Erie Street. Our house is located at 6526 Erie Street (north

side of Erie Street between Main and Summit streets). It was constructed exactly 100 years ago in 1917. The house is what is called a catalog home, and the blueprints and complete structure were ordered from a catalog. The materials to construct this house, inside and out, were delivered on the Toledo & Western Railway, which was on South Main Street where Sautter’s is located today. On the day of delivery, the owner or his designated builder would pick up the materials. Catalogs suggest that the materials for the home could be delivered in up to three boxcars depending on the size of the house. In 1917 it was probably picked up, requiring several trips, and brought to the property that had already been purchased and prepared for the construction.

As I looked through the various old home catalogs that are available online, I found that the closest thing to my house was through the Home Builders Catalog Co., of Chicago. The catalog picture shows the house with the bay window on the opposite side, a fireplace, which our house does not have, a woodsided front porch and ours is made of cement blocks. The catalog does say that features such as this could be modified on the blueprints for a nominal fee.

In the search for the history of our house, the first thing I started with was the list of owners from 1917 to current. Some homes that are 100 years old have quite a list of past owners, but in our case, we only had a couple past owners before we purchased it in 1991.

1922 the Lucas County Auditor’s office: Dec. 2, 1916 to April 6, 1981 – John C. and Martha Iffland April 6, 1981 to Jan. 29, 1990 – Martha Iffland Jan. 29, 1990 to Oct. 16, 1991 – Mark D. and Mary E. Edwards Oct. 16, 1991 to current – Sam and Gayleen Gindy Once you have a list of past owners, you can start looking into their lives. In my case, by the time I started searching for John and Martha Iffland, they had already passed away.

From their obituary notices, I found one of their sons, still living in Sylvania, and I contacted him. He came over and told us many stories as we showed him around the house where he grew up. He shared with us a photo of his mother and father when they were married on June 26, 1912 in Riga, Mich. and a photo of our house shortly after it was built.

He said that his dad first took a job at the Riga State Bank, and that was where Martha and John met. They were married and then had a house built in Riga, Mich. By 1916 John was offered a better job at the Sylvania Savings Bank. At that time they moved to Sylvania.

However, Martha had said that she would only move if she could have the same house they had built in Riga, built in Sylvania. Her wish came true, and somewhere in Riga, Mich. our house has a twin.

After a couple of years, John was again offered better pay and took a job with the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Sylvania.

That bank had just constructed a beautiful, new building on the northeast corner of Main and Monroe streets. He stayed there until 1940 when the Farmers and Merchants Bank merged with the Sylvania Savings Bank.

John’s son told us that one of his father’s most memorable events while working at the bank was the bank robbery that occurred on May 5, 1930. This was the day that the notorious “Pretty Boy” Floyd and his gang drove into town and robbed the Farmers and Merchants Bank. John was the head cashier, and as the crooks came through the front door yelling, he instinctively shut the door to the bank vault. Needless to say, by the time the robbers approached John and demanded money from the vault, he informed them that the vault was shut and would not open. This infuriated “Pretty Boy,” and he gave him quite a beating as a result, which surprisingly didn’t kill him. In the end, the robbers were only able to get a limited amount of cash from the teller windows, and John was the hero of the day.

After the two banks merged in 1940, John retired from the bank business and entered the insurance business full time selling as “J.C. Iffland Insurance.” He retired in 1955.

He also served as the clerk of the village of Sylvania from 1941 until 1949. He had his in-

2017 surance office in our basement here on Erie Street, and many of the old-timers tell me they remember coming through our back door and looking down into the basement to see if “Iffy” was down there.

While living in this house, the Ifflands had three sons. I was told that all were born in this house: John Jr. was born in 1921, Charles in 1924 and Harold in 1927. The three boys attended elementary and high school in Sylvania and graduated from Burnham High School. All three went on to college, obtaining BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering.

In reviewing the building permits that were issued, we found one from 1941 when J.C. Iffland obtained a permit to remove the stucco siding from the house and replace it with wood siding, which still exists on the house today.

John Iffland died in 1980 after living in this house for 63 years, and Mrs. Iffland died in 1989 after living in this house for 72 years.

The next family purchased the house and only lived here a year and a half. We heard that the owner obtained a job outside of Sylvania and was forced to sell and move.

When we purchased the house in 1991, the kitchen was a scene from the 1950s, but everything else had pretty much been updated. In 1999, we had the kitchen gutted and updated. Today all the original beautiful hardwood oak floors, oak staircase, French doors, window framing, bay window and dining room built-in still exist in the house, and they have never been touched by paint. We had the 1922 garage removed in 2013 and a new 2-1/2-car garage replaced it, matching the house, along with a new driveway.

We have lived here for 26 years and raised two children in the home. It’s a good sturdy house, and we have enjoyed it. There is so much more I could tell you about the house, but there just isn’t space here. These are the things I will be documenting and sharing with the historical society for their files, for the next generation.

What’s growing in downtown Sylvania Shoppers and visitors will find several new varieties of foliage growing in the large curbside pots on Main Street this season. According to the city’s Parks and Forestry Superintendent Patrick O’Brien, this year alternating pots are filled with “Gold Star” dracena, “Zig-Zag” fish bone cactus, creeping jenny and orange sunpatiens, which he says work well in different light levels.

The other pots contain “Xanadu” phellodendron, “Bewitched”sweet potato vine, licorice plant, lilac sunpatiens and purple shamrocks.

The bridge pots contain wave petunias in purple, sky blue and orange, along with

creeping jenny.

O’Brien and his team have also planted parking lot pots with a mixture of petunias “Toffee Twist” ornamental grass, “Dr. Brown” Hawaiian ti , and “Regal Shield” alocasia.

New Concolor Fir Tree Planted A new Concolor Fir has been planted in Maplewood Park to replace the Colorado Blue Spruce that was used as Sylvania’s Christmas tree for so many years.

“We had to replace the tree as it had fungal disease which attacked and left the tree unsuitable as a Christmas tree,” O’Brien explained.

The River Centre Foundation will hold its seventh annual Bridge to Recovery Walk on Saturday, June 10, at the River Centre Foundation House, 5445 Main St. Sylvania. The focus of the event is to create awareness of eating disorders, which affect more than 30 million Americans.

The event, sponsored by Brown & Brown Insurance of Ohio, includes a one-mile walk that symbolizes the steps taken in the recovery process to move forward and inspire others and sharing that eating disorders are dangerous illnesses and not a life choice. Participants will gather at the River Centre Foundation house then walk through the beautiful Harroun Community Park and end back at the Foundation house.

The theme for this year’s walk is “Live Life Fully” and is a celebration of recovery and honors a person’s strength in overcoming obstacles. In addition to the walk, Cutting Edge Theatre Company will take the stage for a half

hour with uplifting artistry, poetry and songs highlighting self-love and the courage to Live Life Fully. This will be a day of music, speak outs, a silent auction, raffle, cookout and plenty of fun. Day-of registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m. Online registration is available and can be found by visiting rivercentrefoundation.org Included in the cost of registration is a walk t-shirt, longsleeve shirt, or sweatshirt as well as lunch. The event is open to the public.

Funds raised each year from the walk help support the work of the River Centre Foundation’s mission of providing a better understanding of the causes and treatments of eating disorders through evidence-based research, professional training, education and advocacy.

The St. Francis de Sales graduate found his niche after a time of uncertainty following college. “I went to Ohio University,� he stated. “When I finished, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. A friend of mine had family in the restaurant business. I worked with him to make money. It surprised me that I really enjoyed it, and I was good at it. I decided to attend culinary school in Chicago. I had a cousin who went to the same school, as well as people who went to Ohio University.�

Chef Tankoos cooked in Chicago while in school. When he completed the year and a half program, he moved back to the Toledo area. “I always knew I was coming back,� he recalled. “I was single just before I moved to Chicago. Two months before I left, I ended up meeting my future wife in West Toledo. She is a graduate of St. Ursula. We dated the whole time I was in Chicago. We have now been married five years and have two kids, a 3-year-old and 1-monthold.�

Upon his return to the area, Chef Tankoos began work at Saba’s Bistro and in the kitchen at Chuck’s on Monroe Street. “My background is American bar food and Italian cuisine. I was looking to get into more upscale food,� he recalled. “I began cooking at Rosie’s Italian. I was there for two and a half years until my brother, Robert (Tankoos), found this place. My brother was working with my dad (Bob Tankoos) in the printing business but was always looking for opportunities especially knowing I could cook. We grew up in Sylvania and didn’t know this place existed. We are the fifth or sixth owners of this

place. At one point it was a steakhouse, a Mediterranean restaurant, and a Mexican restaurant for a short while. The owners we bought it from named it the Sundown Cantina.

We liked the name and kept it.�

The duo also liked the physical setup of the facility. “We knew we needed a patio and bought the place after learning we could add an outdoor area. The only things we didn’t like were the margaritas and the food,� stated Tankoos. “We bought it and changed everything on the menu.

I had never cooked Mexican food before, but I was confident I could learn how. The Sundown Cantina wasn’t closed for even a day. We bought it Tuesday morning and I was cooking Tuesday night. We kept on the original staff, and we still have two of the original staff members. We went to work and gradually changed the menu as I taught myself how to cook Mexican food. I instantly added more American food because that is my background.�

Former and new patrons frequent the restaurant. “You see the same people in here because we are a neighborhood place,� said Tankoos. “They don’t want to eat Mexican every night.

Therefore, our menu is split down the middle.

We do a really good hamburger and a New York strip steak. I can never take them off the menu for I have 15 regulars who love them.� Some of the menu items include a ‘build your own quesadilla’ and their latest item is a ‘build your own taco’. The menu also features a wide variety of appetizers ranging from soft pretzels served with warm, white queso dip to Southwest chicken egg rolls. “I have to bring the egg rolls to family parties, or I get yelled at,� stated Tankoos. “We have an eclectic mix of items that will satisfy a wide range of needs and ages. We have burgers, wraps, hot dogs and even seafood

The addition of sour cream gives these muffins a rich, creamy texture. While the sugar balances the tartness of the rhubarb, feel free to cut back on the amount for less calories.

Servings: 12 2 cups all-purpose flour ¾ cup granulated sugar 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup sour cream 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 ½ cups rhubarb (leaves trimmed and discarded), diced into ¼-inch pieces Topping 3 tablespoons granulated sugar ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

It grows in stalks, looks like pink celery, and has a rich, tart flavor. Oftentimes rhubarb is thought of as a fruit because it is usually paired with strawberries and baked into pie; however, it’s actually a vegetable with many Jennifer Ruple health benefits.

“Rhubarb is packed with minerals, vitamins and antioxidants,” said Heather Harris, a registered and licensed dietitian and certified personal trainer who consults in the Toledo area. “The high amount of dietary fiber in rhubarb can help keep you satiated longer, which can be beneficial to weight loss. Fiber also helps to aid in digestion, and it can increase levels of good cholesterol,” she added.

Lucky for us, rhubarb flourishes in the spring, and farmers markets are brimming with it. Just one word of caution though from Harris, “Don’t eat the leaves of the rhubarb due to its toxic levels of oxalic acid.” Otherwise, here are a few ways to enjoy this delicious and beneficial food.

Rhubarb Cardamom Galette

Grilled Rhubarb Crisp

Just like grandma’s old-fashioned crisp, only this one is cooked on the grill instead of in the oven. Best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Servings: 4 5 stalks rhubarb (leaves trimmed and discarded), peeled and cut in ½ inch pieces ½ cup white sugar Juice from 1 lemon 1 cup flour 1 cup quick oats 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon ½ teaspoon ginger ¾ cup light brown sugar ½ cup butter, softened, plus more for the pan Vanilla ice cream for serving

Servings: 6 1 sheet (9 to 10 oz.) frozen puff pastry, thawed 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided 1 tablespoon firmly packed brown sugar ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom 2 tablespoons flour 12 ounces rhubarb stalks (about 8 thin or 3 thick stalks), leaves trimmed and discarded Sweetened whipped cream or ice cream Heat oven to 425 F with a rack set on the lowest rung. Unfold pastry onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon sugar, brown sugar, cardamom and flour. Evenly sprinkle mixture over pastry.

Trim rhubarb stalks 1 inch shorter than the pastry, then split lengthwise into ½-inch wide pieces. Lay pieces parallel across the pastry square, leaving ½-inch border of pastry.

Sprinkle rhubarb with remaining 2 tablespoons sugar.

Bake galette until edges are golden brown and puffed, 12-15 minutes. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Divide the batter among the muffin cups, using the back of a spoon or a small spatula to settle the batter into the cups. The batter should mound a bit higher than the tops of the cups.

For the topping, in a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon and mix well. Sprinkle a generous ½ teaspoon of the cinnamonsugar mixture over each muffin.

Bake the muffins until they’re golden brown, spring back most of the way when gently pressed, and a pick inserted in the center comes out clean, 18 to 22 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let the muffins cool in the pan for 5 to 10 minutes. Carefully lift the muffins out of the pan, loosen them with the tip of a paring knife if necessary, and let them cool somewhat. Serve warm.

A 1976 graduate of Sylvania High School, Tom had an accounting degree from the University of Toledo and was previously employed at his father’s accounting, Bourquin and Associates. He also worked at Foodtown, Clarklift and Key Bank. The outdoors was a place he loved to be; especially sitting by the fire pit, he also enjoyed grilling, baseball and visiting the shooting range. He was in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Rachel Davenport

Rachel Davenport was reunited with her loving husband, Roger, parents, two brothers and many friends on May 16, 2017.

She dedicated her life to serving her family and community and is survived by her four children, two step-children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rachel was born Oct. 23, 1935, in Monclova, Ohio, to Edna and Byford Bush. She was a member of Pilgrim Church for more than 40 years and a neonatal nurse at Flower Hospital before she retired to travel the country with Roger. Rachel transformed her life and the lives of countless others with serenity, courage and wisdom. She passed peacefully, surrounded by family at St. Vincent’s.

John Watkins

John “Jack” K. Watkins, affectionately known by his friends as “Digger,” passed away May 19, 2017, at Mercy St. Anne Hospital at the age of 87. Jack was born June 17, 1929, in Detroit, Mich., to Byron and Elsie Watkins. As a young boy, his family moved to Sylvania where he attended Maplewood Elementary and graduated from Burnham High in 1948. He was inducted into the Sylvania School Hall of Fame in 1997.

In 1949, Jack joined the Sylvania Township Volunteer Fire Department and was promoted to fire captain in 1961 and served in that capacity until 1971. He was one of the original members of the rescue scuba team and served with distinction on the rescue squad.

In 1953, Jack married Dorothy Kohlman of Oak Harbor, Ohio, and together raised their daughter Julie and son John II. Jack and Dorothy vacationed annually to the Hiawatha Sportsman Club where they shared time with many family members over the years. They also spent time in St. Petersburg, Fla. They loved watching their children and then their grandchildren play sports, traveling as far as South Dakota for a soccer tournament. Jack enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing as a member of Highland Meadows and playing cards at the Elks. He was a car enthusiast and loved to attend shows and auctions but always had a special place in his heart for the Jeep. Jack enjoyed people, one-liners and playing practical jokes with friends.

From 1951-1953, Jack served his country during the Korean War with the Army’s 2nd Reconnaissance Company of the 2nd Infantry Division (Indian Head). He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart.

Jack was co-chairman for the War Memorial located in front of the Sylvania City building.

In 2015, Jack served as grand marshal for the Sylvania Memorial Day Parade.

Jack attended the University of Toledo and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science while working as a policeman for the Greenhill’s Police Department.

After graduation in 1959, Jack worked at the Reeb Funeral Home as an embalmer, funeral director and ambulance driver where he had been employed since he was twelve years old doing yard work and other errands. He retired as partner in 2012 at the age of 82 but continued to help at the funeral home.

He was elected to Sylvania City Council in January 1962 and served through December 1969 and again from January 1978 until December 1979. In 1970, Jack was appointed the Director of Public Safety. Jack was a lifetime member of the Joseph W. Diehn American Legion Post, a longtime member of the Sylvania Chamber of Commerce, Sylvania Rotary and Elks Lodge. He was a charter member of the Sylvania Moose Lodge, a member of the Zenobia Shrine Jeepster Unit and a longtime parishioner of Olivet Lutheran Church.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; daughter Julie; son John (Jan); grandsons Joshua, Nathan and Troy; brothers Robert (Jackie) and Lawrence; brother-in-law Herman (Lois) Kohlman and many nieces and nephews.

Linda Luchansky

Linda D. Luchansky, 63, of Lambertville,

Mich., passed away May 15, 2017, at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo Inpatient Unit.

Linda was born Aug. 27, 1953, in Toledo, to parents Harry and Kitty (Larzelere) Ducy.

She was employed for many years at Toledo Hospital and most recently was employed at the University of Michigan Hospital, until her retirement. Linda dedicated her time to the Race for the Cure events for many years. She was a fiercely loyal fan of the University of Michigan Wolverines. So much so she volunteered to work in the press box on game day to get closer to the action on the field. Since retirement, she loved time spent with her grandsons. After their visits, she would always say, in parting “Always remember that I love you to the moon and back.”

Linda is survived by her loving husband of more than 40 years, John Luchansky, Jr.; son Matthew (Tami) Luchansky; grandsons Nolan and Evan; mother, Kitty Ducy; sisters Mary (Paul) Wisnofske and Nancy (Dan) Nieman; brother Terry (Debbie) Ducy; goddaughter Rachel Baughman; godson Jonathan Nieman; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Eugene Lemle

We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Eugene Wesley Lemle, over the past 64 years, among them: When the sun is shining, drop everything to go have fun outside. There is always time for a bike ride, and always room for a hot fudge sundae. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, as long as you have fun. Turn off the TV and go get your hands dirty. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and if it’s broken, a little love and some WD-40 is probably all that it needs.

Gene was a very talented man. He built his first airplane when he was only 16 years old with his father, Norbert Lemle. He worked on parts in the 1970 Rodgers High School shop class. He built and designed recumbent bicycles. Gene was a member of the 200th Red Horse Squadron of the Air National Guard.

He was the long-standing president of Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 149. He retired from the Lucas County Road Maintenance Department in August of 2016.

Every Saturday morning Gene could be found at the Fulton County Airport, doing what he loved, flying his 1941 Taylorcraft, to meet his friends for breakfast. He enjoyed tinkering in his pole barn, kayaking, jet-skiing, riding his bicycle, playing his 12-string guitar, listening to live music and spending time by the water. Every summer he would take his family to Higgins Lake to spend time together.

He is joined in heaven by his mother, Gladys Lemle, and his father, Norbert Lemle.

He was a loving husband to his wife, Linda Lemle, and incredible father to his daughter Sarah Andrews (Lemle), and son-in-law Mark Andrews. He spent nine wonderful months getting to know his grandson Wesley. Gene lived every day to the fullest and had no re-

David McCormick

David J. McCormick, age 50, of Ottawa Lake, Mich., passed away suddenly on May 10, 2017.

He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on March 27, 1967, the son of Edward and Karen McCormick and the brother of Mark.

He was a loving and devoted husband to Rhonda (Iott) McCormick, whom he married in 1996 and had three beautiful children; Morgan Taylor, Joshua David and Matthew Robert, whom he loved with all his heart.

They survive along with his parents, Karen and Edward McCormick; brother Mark (Brenda); nieces and nephews Christy, Keith, Kelsey, Julian, Jessica, Taylor and Troy; cousins Doug and Bill Block, who all played an extremely important part of his life.

Dave graduated from Central Catholic High School, Toledo, in 1985. He received an Associate’s degree of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering in 1997, and in May 2008, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Management and Organizational Development from Spring Arbor University.

Dave has worked for Ford Motor Company for the past 12 years and was promoted in 2016 to the Technical Assistance Center as Prior Approval Manager.

Dave will always be remembered for his huge heart, how he would help anyone who needed it, and his infectious laugh. He enjoyed working on cars and had the uncanny ability to fix or build almost anything. Dave most importantly enjoyed spending time with his

family and friends he loved so dearly.

Duane “Skeet” Viers, passed away May 12, 2017, at The Toledo Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Skeet and his loving wife, Helen would have been married 50 years May 14, 2017.

She will miss him forever.

He worked as a welder for 20 years at Toledo Truck Tubes. He also drove trucks for 10 years with ER Zeiler Excavating and Jerry Keck before retiring. In his younger years, he would race cars in the 50s and 60s, and was a race boat driver. Skeet and Vern were owner operators of “The Handler” during tractorpulling season.

Skeet was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Wayne, and brothers David and Lavern. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen, children John Woodby, Kandy Collins, Kim Schlieman and Karen Domscho, sister Pam Viers, several grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and his loving K-9 companions, Sweet Pea and Cody.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff at Toledo Hospital for its kind care. The family request tributes to the Toledo Humane Society.

Fineske named interim school superintendent

The Sylvania Schools Board of Education and Scott Nelson announce that effective July 31, Nelson will be leav-

ing his position as Superintendent of Sylvania Schools due to his desire to relocate to the Columbus area in order to be near his family. “In light of his service and contributions to the district for over 18 years and the three years remaining on his contract with the board as superintendent, we believe this agreement acknowledges his tenure here and serves as a springboard for both the district and Scott to move into fulfilling futures. The board and community wish him and his family the best,” said aid Stephen Rothschild, president of the Board of Education The board has further announced that it will seek to appoint Dr. Adam Fineske, the District’s current Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, as interim superintendent effective Aug. 1. The specific terms relating to his employment as superintendent are expected to be negoti-

ated and approved by the Board prior to Aug. 1.

“Dr. Fineske’s extensive administrative experience coupled with his collaborative leadership approach will help move the district forward,” Rothschild pointed out.

“We believe that Dr. Fineske’s proven instructional leadership role across the district, strength in collaboration, focus on increasing student learning and achievement, and his commitment to the community will benefit the district.”

Fineske, a Toledo native, earned a Bachelor’s degree in education, and a Master of Education degree in educational administration from The University of Toledo. He also has a Doctoral degree in educational leadership from Concordia University.

Previously, he has served as the district’s Executive Director of Curriculum and

Instruction, the Principal of HillView Elementary School, Assistant Principal of Arbor Hills Junior High School, an Intervention Specialist, and a third-grade teacher. His many accomplishments include a leadership role in the building of the new HillView Elementary School in 2011 and being named teacher of the year in 2005.

“I am honored and humbled to be taking on the leadership role of superintendent in Sylvania and helping to serve in a community I love!” Fineske offered.

“After my 17 years as an educator in Sylvania, this is a dream job for me, and I am very excited to move our district forward with continued success!” he said.

Fineske has lived in Sylvania for 17 years with his wife, Kate, and their three children Elizabeth, 14, Andrew, 11, and Nicholas, 7.

Color for Camo raises funds for veterans

Notre Dame Academy juniors, Libby Stupica of Sylvania and Victoria Lewandowski, along with several other teens from local area high schools, organized the second annual “Color for Camo” color run on May 13 at

Fossil Park. Over $40,000 was raised this year for Veterans Matter, an organization that houses homeless veterans.

“We are able to donate over $32,000 more than last year to help veterans!” Stupica said.

“Donations are still being received as people find out about our event and for whom the profits are helping.”

A large grant received from Million Dollar Round Table Foundation through Savage and Associates, donations from other local organizations, and participant registration ensured the group’s donation will continue to benefit the nation’s veterans and their families, locally and nationwide.

The run began last year when Stupica and other teens decided to plan a fundraiser for veterans as a service project while participating in Youth Leadership Toledo. After the success of the first run, the teens decided to make the run an annual event. The student-led group contacted sponsors, created marketing materials, managed publicity, handled finances and race registration, and executed all race-day events.

“What we as a group of teens are doing to help our veterans is so rewarding,” said Lewandowski. “We are grateful for the response and support that we have received.

Working closely with Veterans Matter we know

that our donations are helping veterans find long-term housing. The need for housing is real and I think that is why so many people and companies are willing to get behind the Color for Camo runs.”

Stupica is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate, a member of the cross country team, speech team, film studies club, Building Bridges Club, a pep captain for Executive Student Council, a Diplomat, and a French Club officer. She writes for the Sylvania AdVantage and hopes to attend Kenyon College to study public relations and marketing.

Lewandowski is an AP Psychology, English, and government student. She also is a peer tutor, a member of Life Savers Club, St. Cecilia’s Choir, Eucharistic ministry, Link Crew leader, Mr. NDA Core Team, Pep Club, and an NDA Summer Academy counselor. She is also involved in Labre, Bittersweet Farms, Toledo Streets Newspaper and volunteers for weekend picnics for the homeless. She hopes to attend the University of Tennessee to study political science and then attend law school.

Northview’s Creech ‘Teacher of the Year’

On May 25, Toledo Community Foundation and Buckeye Broadband/BCSN announced Ryan Creech as Teacher of the Year. Creech has been teaching in the Sylvania School District for 21 years. An innovator in the classroom, he has dedicated himself to developing projects that bring personal enjoyment and challenge to his students, and to helping students one-to-one.

Creech created the Northview Leadership Academy. It is the only one of its kind in northwest Ohio to focus on Service-Leadership.

Sylvania resident cast in ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ Meg Grzeszczak of Sylvania is part of the Croswell Opera House’s cast of the musical ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,’ which runs from June 10-25. Grzeszczak is a 2013 graduate of St. Ursula Academy in Toledo. The Croswell is a 640-seat historic theater located in downtown Adrian. Opened in 1866, it is the oldest theater in Michigan.

Noah was a section leader, Loading Crew Head, and principal tuba of the Wind Ensemble. Noah has been involved in Theatre, A Cap Choir, Harmony Road Show, Symphony Winds, North Covers, Jazz Band, Jazz Cats, Jazz Combo, Marching band, Pep band, and all of the NV concert bands.

Noah has been a member of numerous honor bands and festivals throughout the region; including traveling abroad with the Ambassadors program and being a member of this year’s OMEA AllState Band. Noah is the son of John and Kelly Jockett.

Libbey Jaeblon has been an outstanding member of the Northview Choir and Band programs all four years of high school. As a leading role in numerous NV musical productions, she shines in her roles as Marian in Music Man, as well as Fantine in Les Miserables. Libbey has been a member of A Cap Choir, Harmony Road Show, Symphonic Band, Symphony Winds, Wind Ensemble, Theatre, and has performed in various honors festivals and groups at Northview, including Solo and Ensemble and District Honors Choir. Libbey sings and dresses as Disney princesses through Midwest Princess Parties, and regularly plays guitar. Libbey is the daughter of Chad Simon and Amy Engel.

A STUDENT SPEAKS Summer is not so subtly creeping up on us. Temperatures have been in the high 80s and college students free from the shackles of exams taunt every high schooler in the area. Like most of our peers, my Libby Stupica friends and I have found it difficult to keep stress levels down as we quickly approach the end of the school year.

Final exams cloud the excitement of the approaching break, but we know summer fun is right around the corner (and maybe exam week will go by faster if we stay busy studying). I decided to ask my peers their thoughts about the upcoming exams and what exciting summer plans they have to use as a light at the end of the tunnel. Here are their responses: “One, I’m most excited for free nights where I can do the things I want, read what I’d like, and maybe even babysit a favorite little friend!

Two, finals are a sticky subject for me, regardless. These upcoming exams are worrying me a bit more; however, because I’ve had a difficult time lately with personal issues and tests don’t help me much! Nonetheless, it’s much easier to work when you have a trip to look forward to!” Vijay “I feel that although finals can be daunting, they really push students to relearn the semester’s material so it becomes engrained in their minds long-term. Also, I think many students (including myself!) often make exams more stressful than they need to be. If one has been working hard and getting good grades all semester, their finals grades should naturally follow suit.” –Claire “My feelings about the future and the summer are synonymous; I am equal parts excited and terrified. There are so many new experiences, and many of them are unknown. As for exams, I feel more of the latter! In spite of hundreds of tests and evaluations, I’m not immune to the fears associated with “bubble fun” and number 2 pencils.” -Sadie “Finals really help me realize my progress regarding the school and although it is hard, I learn new ways to study and progress. For summer, I’m extremely excited to sleep in!

The Northwestern Ohio Education Association recognized five educators from the Sylvania Education Association at the District’s Annual Awards banquet held recently. Daniel Greenberg received the NWOEA 2016 District Service Award – Active. This is the highest award NWOEA bestowed upon an active district person in recognition for distinguished service to education on the NWOEA District level.

Katherine Jensen, Ryan Reed and Kathleen Theiss were presented the NWOEA Local Service Award, which recognizes individuals for distinguished service for outstanding work for their local association.

Bedford Flower and Garden Club 21st annual garden tour

The Bedford Flower and Garden Club’s 21st Garden Tour will be held Saturday, July 8. The $8 tickets can be purchased on the day of the tour from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bedford Public Library at 8575 Jackman Rd., Temperance, Mich.

This year’s theme is “Fairies in the Garden.” At the library, there will be floral

displays, music, refreshments, a fairy garden competition and garden related items for purchase from the Backyard Boutique.

The proceeds from the tour are used to fund the club’s scholarship given to a Bedford senior pursuing horticultural study.

Sylvania P.L.A.N.T. Camp, PlantLandscape-Art-Nature-Team, an outgrowth of the long-running Sylvania Conservation Corps, began June 5 and runs through June 29.

Students in grades six through nine will have the opportunity to work with Southview horticulture students, current and graduates, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Southview horticulture teacher Bryan Smith noted that students will learn through handson experiences and will be introduced to the horticulture classroom and lab. They will also experience problem-solving, the importance of collaboration, develop time management, leadership and communication skills. Students will also learn about plant maintenance, basic landscaping techniques, landscape tool identification and tool safety procedures.

Students will actually work at several locations around Sylvania including Harroun and Pacesetter parks, Toledo Memorial Cemetery, Sylvania Administration Building and Sylvania Area Family Services. They will also work on the grounds at Plummer Pool, Centennial Terrace and Memorial Field along with Southview and Northview high schools, Timberstone, Arbor Hills and McCord junior high schools.

“We want to educate students on the reasons we do what we do,” Smith offered. “We will travel to different sites to help beautify our community with plants grown by horticulture students involved in the program.”

Toledo Memorial Park is a major sponsor of the program and is providing t-shirts and hats to all camp members.

Lourdes professor to participate in seminar ‘The 20th Century Presidency’

will be held July 23-27 at Stanford University’s Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Center in Washington, D.C. In announcing the selection of participants, CIC President Richard Ekman said, “Strengthening the teaching of American history at colleges and universities is of critical importance. This seminar will provide a great opportunity for participating faculty members to gain a better understanding of effective leadership and to explore presidencies within the context of the history known then and now. We believe that Dr. Alvin Beggs will play a strong role in the seminar.”

“Dr. Beggs has extensive experience in 20th-century history particularly as it relates to U.S. presidential and congressional relations,” said Dr. Mary Robinson, Chair of the Lourdes University Department of History, Political Science and Geography.

While at Lourdes University, Dr. Beggs has developed several courses including one focused on The Constitution and the Supreme Court. A respected historian, he has presented several times including the 2015 Iowa Conference on Presidential Politics, the 2010 National Policy Conference, and the 2017 Ohio Academy of History. A published author, Dr. Beggs’ work has appeared in Financial History Magazine and he served as editor of the 2016 edition of Northwest Ohio History.

The seminar will focus on the administrations of three 20th century presidents: Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency will be considered in the context of the Great Depression and World War II; John F. Kennedy’s presidency will be reviewed in the context of the Cold War; and Lyndon Johnson’s presidency will be discussed in the context of the Great Society and Vietnam.

NV Athlete of the Week

Feross Sarsour has played for the varsity tennis team the last two seasons at Northview. This spring, he played 1st doubles and finished the season with an 8-3 record.

Feross also competed in three singles matches and went 2-1. In addition, he won the second doubles title at the Northview Doubles Invitational. Feross is a National Merit commended scholar and is Northview’s 2017 valedictorian. He was a member of the Wildcat Soccer team, Leadership Academy and National Honor Society.

Coach of the Year

BCSN announced that Keith Hartbarger of Northview was named Coach of the Year. The Coach of the Year Program recognizes the achievements of high school coaches in local athletic leagues and is in its sixth year. The program honors high school head coaches of varsity sports from the Toledo City League, Toledo Area Athletic Conference, Northern Lakes League, and Three Rivers Athletic Conference. The Coach of the Year program is sponsored by Yark Automotive and Ralphie’s.

For the third consecutive year, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honored Lourdes sports information director Ryan Wronkowicz as the 2017 Patrick Moore-Mike Dean SID of the Year. Named after former Madonna SID Patrick Moore, who passed away unexpectedly in 2015, and longtime WHAC statistician Mike Dean, it recognizes outstanding sports information professionals as chosen by SIDs in the conference.

Wronkowicz joined Moore as three-time winners of the award.

In his 17th year in the profession, Wronkowicz just completed his fifth year with Lourdes. He has been an integral part of expanding the Gray Wolves social media presence and implementing live video streaming of games. In addition, he continued the relationship he started with BCSN to provide live and tape-delayed television coverage of sporting events.

“Lourdes is truly blessed to have Ryan on our team,” acknowledged athletics director JoAnn Gordon. “This award is a reflection of his tireless dedication and work ethic in bringing recognition to our student-athletes and the university as a whole.”

His service is not limited to the athletics department. He sat as a staff advisor for an inaugural student-run organization aimed at promoting Lourdes spirit as a whole on campus and in the community and is a popular member of several committees throughout the

school.

Wronkowicz’s service spans through the conference and national levels as well. He served on the WHAC Softball ratings oversight committee this year and also finished his third year on the NAIA National Players of the Week voting committee.

“I am extremely grateful to receive this award from talented fellow SIDs in the WHAC, which makes this honor very special,” said Wronkowicz. “The credit for such an honor goes to the wonderful student-athletes, coaches, and staff here at Lourdes who allow me to work with them and promote their accolades on a daily basis.”

John Jameson Koralewski was born on March 17 in ProMedica Flower Hospital. He weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 21 inches long. He is the son of Julia and Zak Koralewski. His maternal grandparents are Andy and Janice Dempster and his paternal grandparents are Tim and Julie Koralewski.

Having attended Whitmer High School and following Tim’s football scholarship to Bowling Green State University, the two high school sweethearts married June 15, 1957. After settling in Toledo, their family grew when Susan and Sandy were born. After moving to Sylvania in 1962, two additional daughters were born, Sarah and Amy. Tim was a teacher and coach. Pat had a career in the travel industry, owning her own store and traveling to many exotic locales. Together they raised four successful daughters. Many family memories have been created at swimming parties, lakeside visits and sailing aboard Tim’s sailboats.

Today’s family includes sons-in-law and four grandchildren: Erin, Patrick Connor and Callie.

Sun in Gemini-Let’s frolic!

The restless, lively and curious Gemini Sun is always on a quest for new ideas and knowhow. Whatever we do to celebrate this Sun Influence we should enjoy ourselves, get out of our comfort zone, be venturesome, and try something bold. This particular Sun in opposition to transiting Saturn, trine Jupiter, is all about movement, not sitting around but getting up and making things happen. It ignites your inner being, bringing out the other side of your child-like twin self. For those born under Sagittarius, feel the energy. Those born under Gemini, it’s all about you. Pisces and Virgo, work matters may chaotic, however, it’s time for a change in atmosphere.

This particular full moon is energetically positive with a sort of pollyannaish feel to it.
