Sunrise Lions elect new president

Miller, was installed as the new president of the Sylvania Sunrise Lions Club, Inc, on June 13, at its bi-monthly meeting held at Scrambler Marie’s on Central Ave. Lions Club International is the world’s largest service club organization. There are more than 1.3 million Lions Club members in approximately 45,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.

The Sylvania Sunrise Lions Club, Inc serves the Sylvania community by providing eyeglass collections for the visually impaired, an adopta-highway cleanup program, scholarships for Sylvania area students, financial assistance to organizations in the Sylvania area and eye care assistance for people in need. Annually, they host a fishing derby for visually impaired children and sponsor the Kelly Miller Circus, which will be held on Aug. 10 of this year.

Miller is a graduate of the University of Toledo. He was involved as a volunteer for Young Life at Sylvania Southview High School for over 5 years. Miller received the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America in 2010. He is excited to take the reins of the Sylvania Sunrise Lions Club. “My Dad has been a Lion for over 25 years. I grew up around the Lions and spent many Saturday mornings, nine months out of the year, at their pancake breakfasts. I was an extra pair of hands and feet at that event,” recalled Miller. “I would also help the Lions park cars at community events. In the Peace Poster Contest sponsored by the

Lions, I was one of the top three. I got $25, which was a lot of money to a 12-year-old. I experienced first-hand all the good the organization does.”

Upon graduating from high school, Miller was awarded a scholarship from the Lions for his leadership abilities. After graduating from the University of Toledo, he joined the local Lions Club. “I technically became a member of the Lions at our annual get together in the fall of 2015,” he stated. “My Dad served as the president of his club several times. He has been a mentor for me. I brought the rose sale to the Sylvania Club after my Dad pointed me in the direction of a club in Ashland that had a similar event. We have made over $1,500 in the first two years of the rose sale.”

As president, Miller hopes to bring energy and youth to the table. “I have both of those things in abundance,” he said. “I would like to reinvent what we are doing. My goal is to change what we are doing, not entirely, but give some events new life. For example, our Easter Egg Hunt for the visually impaired is a great venue with food and fun yet only 20 visually impaired kids show up. Why not open it up to non visually impaired children? We could blindfold them before they hunt for the ‘beeping’ eggs so they can understand what kids who cannot see deal with.”

Miller also plans on encouraging his Lions to become more involved. “Most people want to serve and want to make a difference. They just don’t know how,” he stated. “I want people be ‘hands-on’ instead of just writing a check.

There is a greater sense of satisfaction that comes from actually doing the work. I also want to make a big push in regards to our involvement in the Fall Festival Parade. This year I want to be in the parade, collect eyeglasses at the event and do things with a new focus and vision. The last big change I would like implement is to have one meeting a month in the morning and one in the evening.

The second meeting of the month will have a speaker, comedian, or musician. I want to open the door to spouses and friends during that second meeting. I want to reach beyond the Sylvania community and keep in line with our motto “we serve.” Service doesn’t stop at the end of our Sylvania zip codes. My ideas and goals may rock the boat but ultimately will propel us forward to a great direction.”

First Christ Camp to be held

Zion Lutheran Church, 8307 Memorial Hwy., Ottawa Lake, Mich., will hold its first “Christ Camp” this summer. The summer activities are being supported by the Women of Zion and various donations from the congregation and the community. The son of Mr. Hockey – Gordie Howe, Dr. Murray Howe, will be the mentoring member of the Camp.

His recent book, “Nine Lessons I Learned from My Father,” which is the third best selling book in Canada this spring, will be highlighted at the camp all summer long along with Biblical mentors and Scripture reflections.

“The best means of nurturing children and youth is have them be involved in activites and then slip in life and spiritual lessons for them to reflect on as they go about having fun,” stated Pastor Terry Rebert of Zion Lutheran. “The community is really coming together to offer their resources to make this a blessed time to nurture our up and growing next generation of leaders. Whiteford Valley Golf Club has offered to lend a hand teaching kids FootGolf. The

Bauman Camp Ground in Samaria, the Whiteford School, and Zion church grounds will also be part of the event locations.”

Some of the activities as Christ Camp will include boys and girl basketball and softball at Whiteford Junior High facility. The age groupings will be from 6-10, 11-13, and 14-18.

There will be onsite visits to special places nearby such as Chapel Hill Farm in Ottawa Lake, where Arabian horses are trained and shown, and Fuller Art House in Sylvania with artist Dani Fuller, who will guide kids in an endeavor called “From a Scribble to an Expression.”

The Christ Camp staff includes Nate Bauman, Baylee Baldwin, and Nick Baumgartner. Angel Webb will serve as the administrative assistant. Kids from the surrounding communities of Ottawa Lake, Blissfield, Toledo and Sylvania as well other towns are invited to attend.

St. Stephen’s hosts July 3 pre-fireworks event

Area residents are invited to bring a lawn chair and watch the fireworks July 3 at Centennial Terrace from the St. Stephen’s church grounds. The church is located at 7800 Erie St. There will be music by Scott Ballard of The Bradberries Band with giveaways for children, free water and popsicles. A family fun basket of baseball items, including four Mud Hens tickets, will be given to the lucky winner.

Activities begin at 7:30 p.m. until the start of the fireworks. The event is free and open to the public.

Crosby Festival of the Arts features annual flower show free to those attending the Crosby Festival.

Sue McHugh heads a dedicated team of volunteers guiding the preservation and restoration of The Lathrop House — a station on the Underground Railroad — in addition to developing educational programming and planning events at the site. She has been involved with its legacy since the beginning of the effort to restore the home, now located in Harroun Park on S. Main Street.

A graduate of Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana, with majors in history and humanistic studies, Sue has always been fascinated by the way our knowledge of history informs our understanding of art, music, and ideas, and how the arts and literature can bring history to life. A mother of four, grandmother of three, and perennial volunteer, she aspires to present history and the priceless lessons it can teach by making it come alive in the imaginations of young and old alike. This passion is reflected in her serving on the boards of the Sylvania Community Arts Commission and the Sylvania Historical Village.

The Lathrop House is one of many locations that are scattered throughout the state of Ohio where men, women, and children fleeing slavery during and before the Civil War era found shelter and safety. It is the only Underground Railroad station in Northwest Ohio open to the public.

Currently the lower level of the home is open on Sundays from April through November from 1 to 4 p.m. with group tours by reservation. Visitors can learn about the important role our area played in this tumultuous time in our nation’s history, and understand how enslaved people were aided and concealed as they made the journey to Canada and freedom. On August 4 from 1 to 3 p.m., the Friends of Lathrop House will present their annual Celebration of Freedom, featuring reenactors, live music, and special tours. This year will also bring a new tradition to The Lathrop House — a community reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4 at 10 a.m. with refreshments served afterward.

In 2016, Sylvania Historical Village took over maintenance of The Lathrop House. Future plans include restoration of the upper part of the house which will be funded with grants and donations and will greatly expand programming for all ages.

Sylvania Advantage, in cooperation with Creative Oxygen, is proud to honor this dedicated woman leader who has been so instrumental in preserving this unique piece of Sylvania history.

The rag man came through the alley to pick up old clothes. Milk was delivered to the front porch but in the winter it froze and my sister and I drank the cream from the top.

I was in Periclean Literary Society in high school. I remember shoving my sister Anita off the streetcar because she wouldn’t move fast enough.

After graduating from Waite, what then?

I worked at Woolworth’s downtown for 16 years. I made $12 a week. I became a bookkeeper at Toledo Pressed Steel in 1945 and worked there until 1977.

The most significant change was when computers came to the workplace. That’s when I retired!

Unique Sweets, Nostalgic and New Work is progressing on Phase Two of the downtown river walk despite the challenges of weather. The Miller Bros., contractors for the project, have lost 39 days from their construction schedule because of inclement weather, but the trail work should be completed by the end of August according to Kevin Aller, Sylvania Public Service Director.

“People will be able to walk and ride their bikes on the trail even though landscaping won’t be completed until the fall,” Aller reported.

This new section of the river trail is six tenths of a mile, bringing the entire Riverwalk to a total of one and a half miles.

The new section extends the current trail from Harroun Park, across Harroun Road to the north side of ProMedica Flower Hospital, past Ebeid Hospice and the Goerlich Center, across Ten Mile Creek under the expressway, through existing conduits and then it will run north to Monroe Street by Burger King.

According to Aller, the ground level path will be paved with asphalt while the elevated areas in the flood plane will be paved with concrete.

The river walk project is part of the Gateway plan developed following public forums held several years ago. Financing for the project comes from several grants with contributions from the city of Sylvania. “We also are very grateful to area businesses who have cooperated with us regarding easements,” Aller pointed out. He listed ProMedica Flower Hospital, Sylvania Country Club and the Bennett Co., owners of Burger King, as those directly involved with the new pathway.

Phase I of the River Trail, a 3/4 mile walkway and bike path completed in 2012, is easily accessible from either Main or Monroe streets. The walkway runs along Ten Mile Creek from Main Street between Root Learning and the Wingate Hotel to Harroun Road. It passes through the SOMO district

and is adjacent to Harroun Park on the south and Monroe Street on the north. The trail borders the north branch of Ten Mile Creek and the mouth of the Ottawa River.

Phase I cost $1.3 million with over $600,000 coming from grants.

Wingate by Wyndham Hall of Fame Recipient ProMedica Flower Hospital Inpatient Rehab hosts open house ProMedica Flower Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation hosted an open house recently to celebrate its newly renovated 22,500-squarefoot-space.

The center provides comprehensive inpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy for patients who have experienced a stroke, suffered a brain injury, have an orthopaedic-related diagnosis, a cardiac or pulmonary condition, or have undergone amputations.

The $1.2 million, six-phase project includes 24 private rooms and one bariatric room. All private rooms are spacious enough for a family member or caregiver to stay overnight with the patient. The space also includes a therapy gym

featuring state of the art equipment, including several unweighting ambulatory tracks to facilitate a faster and safer return to walking.

To assist with an easier move home, the center also created a three-room home transition apartment for patients and their families. This apartment includes a true-tosize kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The rooms look and feel similar to a home environment and provide more privacy.

“We’re excited to offer therapy services to our most vulnerable patients in one location that was designed specifically for them,” said Linda Chambers, associate vice president of rehabilitation services for ProMedica.

A visit with the Sylvania Digital Media Club

I always thought I was a proficient multitasker until I met Patrick Abec, founder of the Digital Media Club USA. He serves as mentor, cameraman, “line feeder,” and coach for local students. “I talked to a local reporter from 13abc who told me that many colleges have media clubs that cover events. They thought having a club for younger ages would be beneficial. I began the Digital Media Club USA in November of 2016,” stated Abec. “I had a vision of forming other clubs in the area under that umbrella.” Club members gain experience being filmed while interviewing local nonprofit and business leaders. “Our first successful club was in Bryan, Ohio. I went to other area high schools with the idea and we now have clubs in 12 communities,” said Abec.

Some communities, like Sylvania, have students that participate in the club who attend Northview or Southview as well as parochial schools. Therefore the clubs, to a certain extent, are set up like other clubs that are independent of the schools. “We want to have freedom to go outside the classroom and be free from constraints of dealing with school schedules and having to film interviews within school buildings,” explained Abec.

The Sylvania Digital Media Club is open to students ages 10-18. “If kids are under 16 years old, they must have a parent accompany them to the interview,” stated Abec. Club members specifically promote and attend area events, especially for nonprofit organizations. “We do a preview interview two weeks before to help drive traffic there and we also come to the event the day of,” he stated. “All the participants in the event can share our coverage. We do not share it on websites. All of our clubs have a club Facebook page and we share the footage from that venue.”

I was interviewed by Liam Veloske, a fourth grader at Sylvania Stranahan Elementary, regarding an upcoming event at Sylvania Area Family Services. Veloske is the youngest member of the Sylvania Club. Abec, who helped conduct and film the interview, believes students gain confidence by looking people in the eye while interviewing them. With me, a ladder was necessary to accomplish eye level questioning. The young man held his own, with a few assists from his mentor.

Surprisingly, the most difficult task he faced was the pronunciation of his own name at the end of the interview... which could happen to a seasoned pro.

Once an interview is completed, it is aired on their Club’s Facebook page and the student who conducted the interview is hashtagged.

“The students are meeting the leaders of charitable organizations and businesses. In the future, students can hit the hashtag and show prospective employers and/or colleges their work,” stated Abec.

There is no fee to join the digital media clubs and expenses are paid for by businesses through sponsorships and ads. There is also no fee for nonprofits and businesses to promote their event. It is free to the community. The majority of members have discovered the Club from the adults in their life. “In most cases, the parents found out about us first before their kids,” stated Abec. “We have 32 students in northwest Ohio due to the nudging from their parents get them involved.”

Abec enjoys seeing Club members gain skills and confidence in front of the camera. “At first they go line by line, then you find they begin to ask questions independently. Since we are doing a great deal of charity interviews, it is usually a standard 6-9 question interview,” he stated. “I have a couple of seniors who said the program gave them the ability to carry themselves at a higher level. They also appreciated being able to have college admission offices utilize their hash-tagged video material. A video is far more than a static line on a resume. Some students have varsity letters, but when colleges can see students interviewing business and charitable organization leaders, it helps create a positive impression.”

The multitasking Abec hopes to continue to grow the clubs in the future. “Seeing the kids grow in confidence is rewarding but one of the things I will always remember came from a parent,” he recalled. “She told me that when she’s 80 years-old, that this is something she can watch to remember all the great memories.

With other clubs, parents are spectators. In the Sylvania Digital Media Club, parents are right in the heat of the action. Parents help students set the interview appointments so there is the flexibility of fitting interviews into busy family life. It really is a great thing to share with your child.” I know, I enjoyed being interviewed by Liam Veloske. Who knows, maybe the next time our paths cross, we won’t need a ladder.

Amy Klosterman has been named the marketing director for Charter Senior Living of Oak Openings, the new assisted living and memory care facility under construction at 6805 Sylvania Ave. at McCord Road.

Following a November groundbreaking, construction, under the direction of The Douglas Company, nears completion.

According to Klosterman, there will be 24 assisted living suites and 36 memory care suites in the one-story facility.

“Based on our feedback from the region, we knew that senior services, especially memory care services in the Sylvania community, were significant. Therefore we developed the new senior living resource with a large balance of memory care services and programming to answer that need,” said Keven Bennema, CEO of Charter Senior Living.

In addition, Charter will be bringing in premier memory care programming to the Sylvania community. Charter’s memory care programming includes a one-of-a-kind approach called Flourishs, which addresses the unique needs of residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias while providing them with helpful support, loving care and personalized programming that honors who they are and where they may be in their journeys.

“Our goal for our residents is what inspired the name of our Memory Care Program – Flourishsm. Flourish Memory Care is rooted in the belief and supported by leading-edge research that people living with

Local agent chosen to attend D.C. conference

Arrow Dickerson of the Arrow Dickerson Allstate Agency, 5415 Monroe St., was one of seven agents nationwide selected to attend the Advocacy Conference in Washington D.C. June 11 through June 13. The program is spearheaded by the National Network to End Domestic Violence, a long-standing partner with the Allstate Foundation. The NNEDV has over 2,000 affiliates nation-wide.

The conference included a Monday afternoon meeting with a focus on domestic violence and financial abuse, an Advocacy Day Policy Forum on Tuesday and a visit to Capital Hill on Wednesday. Dickerson and the other Allstate agents met with members of congress and NNEDV state coalition representatives.

According to Ron Erdelyi, Allstate Field Sales Leader, “Arrow cares about her customers but also cares very much about the community she serves. She was chosen because of her involvement with Allstate Foundation's Purple Purse, a program to raise funds and awareness for domestic violence and financial abuse. In addition to running a very busy and successful

agency, she spends a good amount of her personal time to be an advocate for the Purple Purse program. She feels very strongly about this issue of domestic violence and financial abuse and is equally committed to giving back to her community.”

Dickerson stated, “I felt very strongly that this program was something I wanted to be involved with and further the exposure of the fight against domestic violence in the area in which I serve and where the majority of my customers reside.”

Dickerson has partnered with the YWCA’s domestic violence shelter and raises money through the sale of raffle tickets for the designer Purple Purse. Last year, she raised more than $1,500. She also raises money for the Northwest Chapter of the MS Society for its annual Bike to the Bay fundraising event.

“People recognize that my agency is not just here to sell insurance but also to help the community with issues they face. That is part of my commitment to giving back to the community,” Dickerson offered.

Sylvania Area CIC offers lowinterest loans to businesses

A major focus of the Sylvania Area Community Improvement Corporation is providing low-interest loans to entities wishing to locate, relocate, or expand within the Sylvania School District, according to John Healey, president of the SACIC. In recent years, these fixed asset loans have been extended to Highland Meadows Golf Club, Midwest Security Products, True Point Laser Scanning, Yee Properties to repave the parking lot at J&G’s in downtown Sylvania, Northwest Electrical Contracting, Inc., and Inside the Five.

“SACIC loans are for a maximum of five years, have a fixed interest rate of two percent and are in amounts up to $100,000,” Healey said. “These loans are to help fill the gap between the total costs of the project, other financing, and funds of the borrower.”

He noted that as the loans are repaid, SACIC can re-loan those funds for other projects, and that SACIC has about $200,000 available to loan.

The SACIC loan application, available on their website, www.sylvaniaareacic.org, asks potential borrowers to provide general information about the project and their ability to repay the loan. Personal guaranties from the borrowers are required.

In addition to the application and supporting documentation, SACIC requires a $200 application fee, waived for current SACIC members, to be submitted with the application. Successful borrowers will be responsible for a minimum document preparation fee of $300.

Renovations begins at St. Ursula Academy

After months of fundraising, St. Ursula Academy on Indian Road has started construction on its Bound Together Capital Campaign. The Catholic high school’s construction plan includes building a new Black Box theater, science lab, campus commons, main office, and upgraded athletic fields and kitchen facilities to accomodate the educational needs of its

female students. This $5 million renovation is meant to assist a diverse student body of sixth through 12th grade young women. The project is to be completed by the beginning of September, as students are expected to return to school on Sept. 4.

Here come the veggies – joining a CSA Add peas and asparagus and cook until they begin to soften. Add garlic and season with salt and pepper. Stir well and cook for about 5 minutes.

Pour in cream while stirring. Add cheese and stir until melted.

Tender peas get a boost of flavor from pancetta and a shallot. The addition of fresh mint at the end infuses another level of flavor.

BY JENNIFER RUPLE A few years ago, I overheard a couple of coworkers having a lively conversation about a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture program, they had just joined. I heard them talk about shares and half Jennifer Ruple shares, drop-off locations, and who would pick up the box each week. I also heard them talk about their goals of eating healthier, ways to get more vegetables into their diets, trying new recipes and learning how to can food. I was intrigued by their discussion and wanted to know more about CSA. A CSA program allows the consumer to invest in a farm by purchasing a share of its bounty and its risks of growing. In return, the consumer receives a box of fresh vegetables or farm goods straight from the grower each week or bi-weekly.

It sounded like fun. I’d be doing something good for myself and for the local farming community. I did worry a bit about just me and my husband being able to use up all the produce each week – wasting any of it would defeat the purpose. I ultimately decided to purchase a half-share with a friend, each getting a half a box every other week. That sounded like a reasonable amount to me.

I accepted that this culinary endeavor could be a challenge at times, considering there are a Roasted Beet Hummus

4 servings 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 ½ ounces pancetta, chopped 1 large shallot, minced 1 cup peas Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon fresh mint leaves, julienned handful of vegetables on the list that I’ve never prepared before such as beets, swiss chard and kohlrabi. The goals that I set for myself for this project are simple – eat more veggies, broaden my produce go-to list, and share ideas with others participating in a CSA or those who are simply enjoying the overflowing bounty at area farmers markets. Tortellini with Asparagus and Peas

In a medium sauté pan, add the pancetta and shallot. Cook over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pancetta is browned, and the shallot is tender.

Add the peas, 1 teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper and cook over medium-low heat until peas are tender.

Stir in mint, taste for seasonings and serve hot.

Toss beets, onions, oil, rosemary, thyme and salt in same baking pan.

Roast for 20 more minutes. Drizzle balsamic vinegar over vegetables. Roast 5 minutes longer or until vinegar is the consistency of syrup.

Tender and flavorful asparagus spears are paired with peas in this creamy pasta. Serve it as a main or side dish. For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for the heavy cream; the result is just as tasty.

3 - 4 servings 9 ounces cheese tortellini ½ small onion, diced 1 cup peas 1 cup asparagus, sliced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup heavy cream ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 slices cooked bacon, chopped 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Cook tortellini according to instructions.

Drain and set aside.

In a sauté pan, heat olive oil over medium.

Add onions and cook until soft.

Roasted Balsamic Beets

I’ll admit, no beet had ever stepped foot in my kitchen until now. As I gazed over the pile of grungy orbs, I wondered how I would take them from their freshly “dug up from the earth” stage to the soft and beautifully colored ingredient that graces grocery store salad bars.

Roasting was the solution.

4 servings 4-5 assorted medium-sized beets, cleaned, peeled and quartered 1 medium red onion, cut into 8 wedges 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 ½ teaspoons dried rosemary 1 ½ teaspoons dried thyme ½ teaspoon sea salt 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar Heat oven to 425 F. Drizzle vegetables with olive oil, divide in half, and wrap each half in foil. Place foil packets in a shallow baking pan.

Roast vegetables for about 30 minutes or until tender when pierced with a small knife.

6 servings 1 small roasted beet 15-ounce can chickpeas, mostly drained Zest of 1 large lemon Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 heaping tablespoons tahini ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil Peel and quarter the beet and place it in a food processor. Process until only small bits remain.

Add remaining ingredients except for the olive oil and begin blending. Drizzle in olive oil while blending and continue until smooth.

Taste and adjust seasonings if needed. If consistency is too thick, add a bit of water.

Serve hummus with fresh vegetables, pita bread or pita chips.

Sylvania area businesses pass SCAT’s compliance checks

The Sylvania Community Action Team’s Heart to Heart kids were busy with their Sticker Shock campaign. The group of high school students from Northview and Southview placed 1000 stickers on alcoholic beverages throughout the community inside several local businesses that sell alcohol.

The stickers read: ‘Hey You!! – It is illegal to provide alcohol for people under 21! Check IDs.’ The kids made some great connections and the local businesses were happy with the extra push for safety and compliance.

Sylvania Community Action Team announced that the fall and spring compliance checks of Sylvania area businesses resulted in a “passing” grade for all 15 of the following businesses: In and Out Mart, Licata’s, Rite Aid, 5890 Monroe St., Rite Aid, 6484 Monroe St., Rite Aid, 8310 Sylvania Ave. Rite Aid, 4018 N. McCord Road, Aldi’s, 5535 Monroe St.,, Sautter’s, Speedway, 6601 Monroe St., Speedway, 6700 Sylvania Ave., Sylvan Pantry, Kroger’s Gas Station, 6235 Monroe St., Kroger’s Gas Station, 7545 Sylvania Ave., Dollar General, 6730 Sylvania Ave., and CVS, 7510 Sylvania Ave. During a compliance check, young, legalaged people who may appear to be underage attempt to purchase alcohol and cigarettes at these businesses. The purpose is to determine if store clerks ask to see identification proving that the customer is of legal drinking/smoking age. Businesses not requesting ID are cited by police officers outside of the business. SCAT sponsors the compliance check program in collaboration with Sylvania City and Township Police through a federal grant.

SCAT congratulates the businesses who passed their compliance checks and applauds them for their dedication to keeping alcohol and cigarettes out of the hands of underage

youth. Responsible businesses like these help support SCAT’s mission to prevent drug, alcohol, and tobacco use by young people. To express their appreciation, SCAT sent each business a letter of congratulations and awarded each business a certificate that can be posted at their place of business in honor of their efforts to make the Sylvania community a safe place to live and raise a family.

SCAT offers Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS) for sellers and servers to area businesses selling or serving alcohol. The training is designed to prevent intoxication, underage drinking, and drunk driving by enhancing the fundamental "people skills" of servers and sellers. TIPS gives service professionals the knowledge and confidence to spot signs of intoxication, deal with guests who may have had too much to drink and even learn to pick out false forms of identification.

The state of Ohio does not regulate responsible alcohol service programs, but insurance companies statewide recognize TIPS Alcohol Training and may offer discounts to bars on their liability insurance for training all their staff.

BY MEGHAN ROWE The Sylvania Virtual Academy opened in January of this year, and Director of Technology Sheryl O’Shea believes it has been a long time coming.

“The future is online school,” O’Shea said back in 2000. It was her forward thinking and persistence that created the Sylvania Virtual Academy, which offers students an alternative learning experience outside of the traditional classroom.

When she first brought up the idea of opening the school, it was denied. She brought it up again in 2015 and gained support, but the timing still wasn’t quite right due to district levies. However, O’Shea

St. Ursula Camp For Girls Held

St Ursula Academy is holding its annual summer camps for young girls ages 6 through 13. The camps focus on a variety of different topics, including those of Grapic Design, Art, American Girl Dolls, Cooking, and Science. The girls also have the opportunity to improve their sport performance in camps such as golf, basketball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, and volleyball. Campers undergo a variety of experiences, from painting with their peers to athletic drills with high school and college level coaches.

School safety learning session held With school safety as a constant priority, the Sylvania Schools Safety and Security committee hosted survivors from the West Salem-Liberty January 2017 school shooting as panel guests for a learning session on June 8 at Southview High School. Area school district administrators, school resource officers, and school mental health resource faculty were invited to join Sylvania Schools for this event.

The safety session was a panel presentation by the representatives from West Salem-Liberty focusing on their first-hand accounts of school

violence, lessons they learned, and why they advocate for ALICE training.

Representatives from West Liberty-Salem High School included Greg Johnson-K12 principal, and Kraig Hissong, superintendent of West Liberty-Salem School District, who both aided in disarming the shooter. Also speaking were Logan Cole, a West LibertySalem high school student who was shot and recovered, his father, Ryan Cole, and a West Liberty-Salem school counselor.

She noted history is an ideal subject for online school. Students are able to receive information instantaneously and have extensive accounts of historic events at the click of a button. “This type of education makes so much sense to me,” she said.

While the academy can be tailored to anyone, it proves especially beneficial for students who are medically fragile or credit

provides them with an education that community schools are not able to provide.

For 10 transferring Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT) students, the academy granted them the ability to continue their education following ECOT’s closure in February.

The academy was well received in its halfyear pilot program, and celebrated its six students who graduated this year. “I am so proud of them,” O’Shea said. “Some of them faced big hurdles. I am so proud of their hard work to get them where they wanted to be.”

Charish Shaw has been a member of the Northview Band program all four years of high school. She has demonstrated leadership in a multitude of ways throughout her career at Northview. Charish has been a member of Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Cats, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Marching Band, and has performed in numerous regional honors groups and OMEA festival events. Charish is also actively involved in class government, student council, leadership academy, and NHS. She is the daughter of Charles and Marvita Shaw.

Lourdes selected to join National Consortium Lourdes University Provost Dr. Geoffrey Grubb announced that the institution is one of a select group of 26 institutions across the nation chosen for a national consortium by the Council of Independent Colleges, in partnership with the Association of College and University Educators. Lourdes University will join the national Consortium for Instructional Excellence and Career Guidance, a new initiative that will prepare up to 500 faculty members nationwide to use evidence-based teaching practices shown to promote student success while embedding career guidance into their existing courses.

The program is made possible by a $1.2 million grant from Strada Education Network.

A cohort of Lourdes University faculty members will enroll in ACUE’s new course, “Career Readiness and 21st-Century Skills.”

The course is based on more than 30 years of research that documents the evidence-based teaching practices that have been shown to improve student outcomes while also providing course-embedded career guidance.

ACUE will debut two new modules that specifically address career readiness. In Embedding Career Guidance faculty members will be able to learn how to provide frequent, course-embedded information about specific careers. In Preparing Students with 21st-Century Career-Ready Skills faculty members will be assisted in developing course

content, assignments, and assessments to help students develop career skills.

“Lourdes University is honored to be selected by the Consortium for Instructional Excellence and Career Guidance. Lourdes University has long been committed to integrating the liberal arts with career preparation. That powerful combination provides what employers consistently report they need from college graduates,” said Dr. Grubb.

Michelle Rose, Lourdes University Instructor and Director of Field Education, will lead the faculty cohort in the 25 learning modules beginning this fall and mentor them in using the new skills in their classes.

“Lourdes faculty members will receive unprecedented support in teaching with evidence-based practices that promote student learning and career readiness. In addition, CIC/ACUE will work with Lourdes to measure the impact of this program on faculty and student outcomes,” said Ms. Rose.

“This new course prepares faculty members to develop students’ critical thinking, leadership, interpersonal, professional skills, and more, which are all crucial to success in obtaining and keeping a job,” said Dr. Penny MacCormack, ACUE’s chief academic officer. “These new modules go a step further to guide faculty members in providing specific career examples and skills assessments throughout their coursework.”

In May, Lourdes University President Mary Ann Gawelek, Ed.D., conferred bachelor and master’s degrees to 158 students during the institution’s 60th commencement exercises.

Lourdes University appoints new VP for Academic Affairs

Terry M. Keller Lourdes University President Mary Ann Gawelek announced the appointment of Terry M. Keller, Ph.D., as Lourdes University’s new Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Keller will be responsible for leading the overall direction and management of academic programs. He will assume his duties on July 1.

Dr. Keller has served Lourdes in increasing leadership roles since 2012. During his tenure, he designed, implemented and successfully managed the university’s Ireland study abroad program, established an academic partnership with Saint Louis University to offer an innovative Master in Social Work program, developed the Lourdes Teaching Proud and Strong Partnership with the Toledo Public Schools and is currently serving as the Dean of the College of Social Sciences.

Lourdes University receives HRSA grant Lourdes Provost, Dr. Geoffrey J. Grubb, and Director of the Master of Science in Nursing: Nurse Anesthesia Program, Dawn AuBuchon, CRNA, have announced that the program has been granted $53,989 in funding for the 2018-19 academic year through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Health Resources & Services Administration.

The Nurse Anesthetist Traineeships Program will provide traineeship awards to

eligible students. Funds may be used for full or partial costs of tuition and fees, books/ebooks, stipends for living expenses or to attend workshops and conferences on topics including but not limited to Reduced Opioid Abuse, Multi-Modal Pain Management and Recovery.

“We are pleased that HRSA has renewed the grant and also increased funding for the upcoming academic year,” said Ms. AuBuchon.

Lourdes Lifelong Learning’s next trip will be a visit to the Yankee Air Museum where the history of the Willow Run Bomber plant, home to women who worked in manufacturing during WWII, is preserved.The date is July 26 with the bus departing from Lourdes at 9 a.m. and returning at 6 p.m. Lunch is included. lunch, participants will attend the world premiere play “Willow Run” at the Purple Rose theatre. The play follows the lives of four women who worked in the plant. A Licensed Independent Social Worker in the State of Ohio and a Licensed Masters Social Worker in the State of Michigan, Dr. Keller has worked as a behavioral health case manager, clinical supervisor and outpatient therapist.

His clinical experience focused on community mental health involving individual, family and group work. He also holds the Academy of Certified Social Workers certification.

A respected professional and academic, Dr. Keller has conducted several research projects, and penned multiple articles, manuscripts and peer-reviewed journal articles. He has also presented in three countries and across the U.S. Currently, he has four manuscripts in development.

“Lourdes is a special place that is focused on student success. I look forward to working with the leadership team, deans, chairs, faculty and staff to creatively develop new academic initiatives and deliver programs that best meet our students’ needs,” said Dr. Keller.

“The Board and I are confident in Dr. Keller’s skills and leadership to move the university forward. We remain focused on providing academic programs designed for students across the age spectrum,” added Dr. Gawelek.

Southview Athletes Honored

The Cougar Athlete of the Week is sophomore Charnae Merrell.

Charnae is a sprinter and jumper for the Lady Cougars track team.

At the recent NLLs, Charnae placed 1st in the 200m and 2nd in the 100m and long jump. At Districts, Charnae finished 1st in the 100m and 200m, and 2nd in the high jump. Head coach Todd Bostater added, “Charnae is a great track athlete who had an amazing performance at the District meet. Her track future is very bright!” Charnae was also a major contributor on the Lady Cougars District runner-up basketball team.

Sean Park is a four-year member of the Southview tennis team.

Sean earned his varsity letter as a junior, but this is his first season as a full-time varsity player. He’s responded by posting a 12-3 record. Playing in his first significant tournament, Sean won an NLL Championship at Doubles by defeating Perrysburg in 3 sets.

Teamed with Nathaniel Long, they overcame a 2-5 deficit in the 3rd set, winning five straight games to win the Championship. Sean is also a pianist in the Toledo Youth Orchestra and is the coconcertmaster of its top orchestra.

Sean received a scholarship to Duke University in the fall and will major in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in music.

The winning mens team from Mainstreet Ventures included players John Hills, Rick Bohn, Mike Gibbons and Mike Fischer. Benefiting from the annual Lourdes golf outing was the scholarship fund with over $9,000 in proceeds.

I.M. Kim, defending champion of the Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning and OI, was in Sylvania June 11 for a round of golf with the media and to introduce the schedule for the 34th Marathon Classic Golf Tournament. The LPGA event will be returning to Highland Meadows Golf Club from July 9 to 15. The tournament has over 1,000 volunteers who contribute to the overall success of the event, raising over $10.6 million to help children’s charities. Kim expressed her enthusiasm for the much-anticipated event.

She has a total of seven LPGA victories, including the 2017 Marathon Classic, and made the top 10 on her first year at Highland Meadows Golf Club. Despite two-hour rain delays in 2017, she still placed first with 63 strokes in her final round. Kim hopes to have another successful match at this year’s tournament.

I recently returned from a destination event that included over 25 family members, a few type A+ personalities and thankfully tropical alcoholic beverages. I quickly came to the conclusion that you cannot know someone’s true character until you travel with them. This lead to an epiphany of sorts.

Forget online dating. I think someone could make a small fortune by coming up with a service that plans short getaways for prospective matches. If a service verified that you were not hitting the road with a potential serial killer, someone who owns a double-digit number of felines or is way too attached to their mother, I believe this concept could work. Traveling forces people out of their comfort zones, exposes “nuances” of one’s personality and would save months of dating someone that you could never share a suitcase with due to opposing (aka OCD) packing techniques.

The insights gained could be endless but I believe a few of the “biggies” would pop up to the traveler the minute you depart.

The Itemizer

Traveling may determine if someone is willing to drive 30 miles out of their way not to pay a toll or save 5 cents on a gallon of gas, or inform you that you owe $4.29 for your half of the turkey sandwich (even though perspective mate scarfed down all the fries).

The Packer

There are countless ways to pack. I believe you need to wave the red flag if you witness extreme variances on both ends of the spectrum. Does he/she bring the entire contents of their closet or the bare minimum, which may lead to an endless

search for a pair of flip flops? Having a more than 3 inch stack of professional journals, four electronic devices, and multiple backup chargers in a carry-on is also concerning.

That being said, I have found that unpacking is far more insightful. If a prospective mate needs to hang his/her items 1.2 inches apart on matching hangers and begins to place their socks in color-coded order when they could be out enjoying the sunshine, you may want to pack it up, so to speak.

One of the things I love about traveling is that you learn to let go, as circumstances reinforce the hard truth that we really aren’t in control. Things happen. Suitcases are lost.

Bags are 2.3 pounds over the limit causing the Allegiant Airlines counter person (who acts as if she has an extreme case of constipation) to suggest you take things out of your bag and wear three layers of clothing or fork over $50 for a checked bag. If the travel companion can handle difficult people with grace and kindness, they may be able to handle interacting with your crazy, annoying “Aunt Mabel” when she discusses her surgeries in chronological order dating back to 1983. Mindset is everything. If you find yourself with someone who is willing to visit the alligator farm, attempt ziplining, bond with the locals and try the regional cuisine, you may be at the beginning of a beautiful journey.

I must admit, it has been a LONG time since I traveled with a member of the opposite sex. I have had the pleasure of experiencing numerous adventures with my buddy Pam. Friendships are also put to the test on the road. We jokingly say that we

need to buy travel insurance… just in case.

It’s not necessary though. We have survived small living quarters on a ship, where you could brush your teeth, tinkle and shower simultaneously. We have also endured black fly season at my Canadian cabin, a hotel that ended up being a pit stop for truckers and their overnight “guests,” and what we thought were (OK my bad) 30 minute hikes that ended up feeling like a 23,000 step neardeath experience. Pam rolls with the

punches, handles “hot reactors” like a pro, is open to new experiences, travels light, enjoys “happy time” (Canadians don’t like to limit things to an ‘hour’) and is accepting of other people’s cultures, views, and on our most recent excursion, my crazy family. Maybe my idea of “travel dating” will take flight. Al Gore once said, “Travel has a way of making you look like your passport.” Sadly, when it comes to my excursions with the opposite sex, that rings true. I am always the optimist though. I’m willing to set sail if the opportunity presents itself. As Yogi Berra once said, “When it comes to the fork in the road… take it.” I plan on doing just that.

5902 Main Street

Sylvania–Then and Now

Keeping with the theme of structures in Sylvania that are 100 years old and older, we just completed all the homes on the west side of Main Street and north of Erie Street. Now we will move across the street to the east side of Main Street. I already shared the history of the beautiful Chandler house (pink) at 5916 Main Street. The houses to the north of the pink house are not yet 100 years old, so we will move to the next house south. The address is 5902 Main St., and the house was built in 1902. The owners of the property and home over the years include: 1900 – Claude E. Webb 1902 – House was constructed while owned by Webb 1919 – George W. & Carrie B. Fletcher 1942 – Ellen J. Fletcher 1986 – Charles H. III & Laurie L. Puhl 2002 to current - Christine L. Davies In 1900, Claude Webb purchased this property and in October of 1900, he married Florine Farnham. By 1902, this home was constructed, and a 1903 issue of the Toledo Critic newspaper featured a picture of the new home with a the caption reading: “Claude Webb’s Residence Adrian Street.”

The first available census showing the residents of this home was the 1910 census, and listed the following: Claude Webb – 32 years old – married nine years – employed as a salesman for a fertilizer company – owned home free of mortgage, and his wife Florine – 33 years; and daughter Arba – 8 years – attending school.

An article appeared in a February 1916 issue of a Sylvania Sentinel which read: “Fine Residence Property For Sale – On account of moving away will dispose of my home located on North Division Street between the residence of A.R. Chandler and W.B. Harris, 8 rooms, hot water heat. A bargain if taken at once. Easy terms if desired. Address: C.E. Webb, 7166 Normal Ave., Chicago, Ill.” In September of 1918, Mr. Webb completed his World War I registration card and at that time was living in Louisville, Kentucky working as the general manager of the Louisville Fertilizer Company. He did not sell this home in Sylvania until 1919, after World War I ended, and he then sold it to George W. and Carrie (Jeffs) Fletcher.

In July of 1926, Mr. Fletcher obtained a building permit to construct a garage on the property.

Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher lived here until he died in 1959, and she died in 1966. In 1942 they had transferred the home to their daughter, Ellen J. Fletcher, who lived here with her parents until they died, and then continued to live here until she died in December of 1985.

George W. Fletcher and his wife Carrie, and daughter Ellen are found living here in the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses. The 1940 census shows George was 81 years old, Carrie was 69 years old, and Ellen was 34 years old. Ellen was single, and employed as a stenographer for a glass company.

A Sylvania Sentinel newspaper dated March 3, 1938 reported that thieves leisurely dismantled the automobile of Miss Ellen Fletcher of North Main Street, after breaking the padlock on the garage in the rear of her

They said that when Miss Fletcher went to the garage in the morning to get her car to drive to work in Toledo, she discovered that the four wheels and tires were missing, the ash tray gone from the interior of the car and the gas tank drained. Tools belonging to her father were also taken from the garage.

A Sylvania newspaper dated Aug. 17, 1950 reported that George Fletcher, of 5902 N. Main Street, was released from under a tree stump that had fallen against his leg pinning him in the hole he had dug to remove the stump. His wife, Carrie, in attempting to aid her husband, fell into the hole and suffered minor injuries. Mr. Fletcher suffered only slight skin abrasions with no injury to the bone. The paper reported that at this time he was 92 years old and considered the oldest man in Sylvania. When the rescue crew arrived he said he was alright and insisted on walking into the house under his own power.

In 1953, Mr. Fletcher celebrated his 95th birthday and reported that he had just spaded his 88-foot by 150-foot garden plot in his backyard. In 1954, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher held an open house for all their friends in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.

According to the announcement in the paper, their daughter Ellen was living at home and employed as the Secretary to Faustin Solon, OwensIllinois Vice President.

Mr. Fletcher obtained a building permit in 1957 to build a new chicken coop, and in 1958 the Sylvania newspaper reported on the 100th birthday of Mr. Fletcher on April 14.

They said he was a retired farmer, and kept an extensive garden on his property at 5902 Main St. until he was 98 years old, and was a very strong “Republican rooter.”

In his final months of life, he was moved to the Quillan Rest Home where he died at the age of 101 years. His obituary notice said he was an enthusiastic baseball fan,

2018 especially of the Detroit Tigers. His wife Carrie died in August of 1966 and according to her obituary notice, she had been living in the Quillan Nursing Home for seven years.

Their daughter Ellen continued to live in this home until she died in December of 1985. Her obituary notice said that she was 80 years old, died in Toledo Hospital, and worked as secretary for 42 years for OwensIllinois, Inc., retiring in 1970. She was never married.

In 1986 Charles and Laurie Puhl purchased the home and lived here until 2002. A building permit shows that a new garage was built in 1992, while they owned it. As of the 1993 Suburban Directory, Charles Puhl owned and operated Puhl Electric Company while living here. They sold in 2002 to Christine Davies. She added a pool to the backyard in 2003, and a shed was also added in 2003 according to building permits. The Suburban directories show Ms. Davies has been living in the home up to the current time.

The Flash Drive vs External Hard Drive

can do!

A flash drive is a small, ultra-portable storage device which, unlike an optical drive or a traditional hard drive, has no moving parts. Flash drives connect to computers and other devices via a built-in USB Type-A plug, making a flash drive a kind of combination USB device and cable. Flash drives are often referred to as pen drives, thumb drives, or jump drives.

To use a flash drive, just insert the drive into a free USB port on the computer. On most computers, you'll be alerted that the flash drive was inserted, and the contents of the drive will appear on the screen, similar to how other drives on your computer appear when you browse for files.

Most flash drives have a storage capacity from 4GB to 992GB (4,8,16,32,62,124,248,496 and 992GB).

They currently come in two speeds, 2.0 and 3.0. Just to be clear, the larger the storage space and the faster the speed, the more you will spend. Flash drives can be written and rewritten on an almost unlimited number of times, similar to hard drives. Flash drives have completely replaced floppy drives for portable storage and, considering how large and inexpensive flash drives have become, they've even nearly replaced CD, DVD, and BD discs for data storage purposes.

The external hard drive functions the

same way but with a different shape and larger size, yet it fits in your packet. Their sizes run from 250GB to 12TB (1,000GB = 1 Terabyte). They insert to a USB port just like the flash drive above. The biggest difference is size and price. A 32GB flash drive runs around $40 while a 1 Terabyte averages $60.

That is a world of difference. Once you have purchased many small flash drives with who knows what on them, you could have owned one large drive for about the same price. A tiny 8 GB flash drive can cost as little as $5.

Cost is always a factor, but how many small ones do you want to own. Why not have a ginormous one to back up your entire computer and have room left over. Do the math.

THE ITALIAN GARDENER A gardener lives on ideas, both his own, and all those he can incorporate from reading, observing and yes, ‘borrowing’ from anyone willing to share.

Contrary to the copyrights and patents of Rick Cozza the business and literary worlds, gardeners are only too glad to share ideas. In fact, it is a pat on the back to have someone ask about your creations.

Case in point . . . I have sorely missed the Toledo Day Nursery’s annual Day In The Garden tours, which were discontinued a number of years ago. It was one of their major funding sources, but apparently became too much to maintain for the funding it brought in. Every year gardens in a different neighborhood were featured for visitation and review by those of us who craved new ideas and plant combinations, and hundreds toured the backyards in Perrysburg, Sylvania, Maumee, Toledo and the region every year.

I learned more about bold planting ideas from those annual tours than from any books or magazines, and incorporated many an idea into my own meager landscape. And when I was asked one year to be a part of the Old Orchard tour, I was only too glad (and honored) to share. See, gardeners are a generous lot!

So, to my astonishment, the Old Orchard Neighborhood Association this year decided to resurrect the garden tour idea, and to use it to showcase their neighborhood, and to raise some funds for improving their community landscaping. Hooray! Eleven yards were

featured in June, and I eagerly walked my former neighborhood marveling at the creativity and hard work of avid gardeners.

‘Lush’ is not a lost image in the garden, apparently. It was alive and well in the Old Orchard gardens. As with my former yard, the area is blessed with soil that has been amended by gardeners for 70-plus years, shaded by old, huge trees (many of which are showing their age, I am afraid), and has smaller city yards that are just the right size to create a sanctuary without costing an arm and a leg.

I am such a fan of shade gardening, and it was resplendent for all to see that day. Hostas in wonderful combinations of the blues, the golds, the splendid bi-colors. Shade perennials mixed into the Hosta beds in masses large enough to cause a “WOW” from visitors. But most intriguing were the little ornaments, the personal pieces that tell you just what this gardener is like as a person.

Ceramic pieces, metal sculptures, little stone toads, and the like were so perfectly placed in among the plantings.

And again, not all of the yards were in keeping with my idea of ideal, but it reminded me of our differences, our likes and dislikes in the garden world, and of the personal time and effort that makes a person a true gardener. And yes, I did indeed see a few things that this humble gardener may try in my own yard next year.

I am reminded of a comment (I believe by Alfred North Whitehead) that, “Ideas won’t keep. Something must be done about them.”

It is part of the human condition to look, to marvel, to think, and then to forget. The secret to such a marvelous experience as a visit to another person’s garden is to then go home and act on it . . . improve your garden, incorporate a new idea, modify that little sitting area, whatever. Thank you, Old Orchard, for this experience!

Independence Day Events Planned

On July 4, 1776 John Adams, signer of the newly written Declaration of Independence and future Craig Stough second president of the United States, publicly predicted that July 4th would be celebrated with festivals and parades, athletic competitions, oratory and fireworks forevermore. From what was a very dangerous and uncertain future 242 years ago, his words were truly prophetic.

His message is still clear here in Sylvania.

Independence Day, 2018 is nearly upon us, and Sylvania has events planned to honor America and celebrate our freedom.

First and foremost will be our Independence Day Celebration the evening of July 3 at Centennial Terrace. Starting at 7 p.m. there will be entertainment, live music and food. And once it gets dark, we will have one of the biggest and best fireworks display

Single family permits

With the first third of the year in the books, the number of single-family housing permits in Sylvania Township has jumped ahead of last year. Daryl Graus, manager of the office of planning and zoning, reported to trustees that as of the end of April the township had issued a total of 50 such permits. At the same point last year the township had issued a total of 34 permits and that was well ahead of the 28 issued in 2016. However, Graus said he has learned not to predict year-end numbers based on fast starts.

The fast start in 2017 slowed and the annual total reached 93. The slower beginning, but steady rate of permits issued in 2016 saw a year-end total of 100. The average cost of a home being built in Sylvania Township so far this year is just under $270,000, according to Graus.

Road resurfacing

A road resurfacing project slated for 2019 will be paid for in part by a grant of almost $250,000 as opposed to what likely would have been a loan for that amount. The project calls for roadwork on Wolfinger Rd. and Whiteford Rd. along with residential streets in the Bancroft Woods and Stonebridge condominiums areas at Bancroft St. and McCord Rd. Rob Nash, streets department superintendent, noted that funding from other agencies for street projects in the township is based on a set of criteria, one of which is the amount of traffic on a selected street. He noted that residential streets, such as those serving condominiums, have relatively low use, which is true of Wolfinger Rd. By including heavilytraveled Whiteford Road as part of the project, the average amount of use of the roadways selected made the project eligible for a grant as opposed to a loan.

Nash pointed out that loans for such work are welcome, particularly because they are interest-free, but a grant is better.

Raises Approved

Part-time firefighter/emergency medical technicians have been granted a raise, recently approved by the Sylvania Township trustees.

The raise in pay came at the request of

Each year, Sylvania City Councilman Mark Frye helps organize a spectacular fireworks show, and he promises this year will be no exception. The fireworks can also be viewed very well from Pacesetter Park.

Thank you also to the many volunteers for this very special event, and also to SAJRD for their hard work and planning. Proceeds from this event go towards the continuing improvements and operation of Centennial Terrace, a wonderful asset for the entire community.

New this year will be a Celebration of Freedom on the Fourth of July at the Lathrop House on South Main Street, which will include a reading of the Declaration of Independence. The event starts at 10 a.m., and I am honored to begin the reading this year.

Along with the many holiday baseball and softball games already planned, another event on the Fourth of July will be the 23rd annual international vintage base ball game with the Actives of Woodstock, Ontario, our

township Fire Chief Michael Ramm, who said it would make his department more competitive with other area departments.

The part-time members will each get four percent raises. Those on the first step of the pay scale will now make $15.60 per hour; the second step, $16.64; third step, $17.68 and the fourth, $19.72.

The raises are the first since July, 2015 and will be retroactive to the first of the year.

Rezoning request denied

Sylvania Township trustees have rejected a request for rezoning property at Sylvania Ave. and Herr Rd. which had been sought by the Apostolic Christian Church of Toledo.

The applicant had hoped to construct a church building of about 10,000 square feet on the approximately five-acre parcel. The application sought zoning for commercial use from the existing light industrial/business park zoning. The church also applied as a planned unit development which would limit any use, if the change was approved for the site of a church.

The staff of the Sylvania Township zoning office recommended against the change, noting that the recently-approved township land use plan had designated that area as one for future light industrial or business park development.

The zone change had also been denied by the Lucas County Plan Commission and the Sylvania Township Zoning Commission.

Trustees split on the issue with John Crandall and Neal Mahoney voting against the change and John Jennewine voting in favor.

After the meeting, Jennewine explained his vote saying that he is an advocate for private property rights. He added that it didn't “sit right that a property owner can find a buyer, and it's a church, and we tell him no."

Sister City. Each year the Sylvania Great Black Swamp Frogs Base Ball Club travels north to Woodstock for a Canada Day game on July 1 and then they return here for the Independence Day game on July 4. This year's game will be at Wildwood Metropark at 1 p.m.

Other major activities planned for July are 6 p.m. at the Sylvania Senior Center on July 11.

Some donors will be members of the safety forces but the public is also invited to donate.

After donating, which will be handled by Red Cross personnel, people will go to a canteen area where juice and cookies will be available. There may also be some lobbying going on as the donor decides which badge to credit for the donation.

Donors get a T-shirt from the Red Cross and also will be eligible to win a gift basket being put together by the safety forces and the administration of Sylvania Township.

the Marathon LPGA Golf Tournament held at Highland Meadows Golf Club during the week of July 9. The Sylvania Pizza Palooza is scheduled for Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21 at Centennial Terrace.

Land rezoned

A parcel of land at the northeast corner of McCord Road and the University Parks Trail has been rezoned to make way for four singlefamily homes. In 2009, the approximately 4.5acre parcel had rezoning approved for an eightunit development, but it was never built.

The new land use plan for Sylvania Township designates the area for low to medium density residential. The property, which faces McCord, is currently undeveloped.

Battle of the Badges

The Sylvania Township Fire Department will compete against the Sylvania Township and Sylvania City police departments in a battle of the badges July 11, for first place in a blood drive.

Citing an annual shortage in blood donations over the summer months to the Toledo chapter of the American Red Cross, the department decided to have a friendly competition blood drive.

Gary Walker

Gary A. Walker, 74, of Sylvania Township, died June 1, 2018, at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania, Ohio.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, to Erla and Alvin Walker, Gary was a 1961 graduate of Howe Military Academy. He then attended the University of Toledo and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He joined his father at Walker Funeral Homes, served as president of the company from 1983-1997, and continued to be active in the daily operations of the funeral homes until his retirement in

2017. Gary founded, with Gene Spradlin, in 1967 and served as president of Walker Ambulance Company. He developed it to be the largest EMS organization in Northwest Ohio before selling it in 1996.

Gary will be remembered for his kind and compassionate nature, as well as his great business sense. He enjoyed boating on Lake Erie and the Great Lakes, taking frequent cruises and spending many weekends at Putin-Bay. He also loved spending time at Devil’s Lake, Mich., for many years of both his childhood and adult life. He enjoyed his yard in Sylvania and the beautiful flowering trees.

Gary was beloved and respected by his family as well as his many friends.

He was a longtime member of First Congregational Church and was recently attending Epworth United Methodist Church.

He was active in community life. He was a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors’ Association and the National Funeral Directors’ Association; a past member of the Jaycees, past president of the West Toledo Kiwanis Club, past member of Sylvania Rotary and current member of the Rotary Club of Toledo. He was an active mason and member of the Zenobia Shrine for many years, especially enjoying his involvement with the Jesters. He was a past member of Toledo Yacht Club, Devils Lake Yacht Club, The Crew’s Nest, The Toledo Club and Sylvania Country Club.

Gary is survived by his wife, Marilyn, son Keith Walker (Katy), daughter Kristen Crandall (Matt), grandchildren Maizy and David Crandall, and Henry, Teddy, Louie and Charlie Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rudolph Beham

Rudolph Max Beham, 88, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on May 31, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 12, 1929, to Josef and Theresa Beham, as the youngest of four sons and the only one born in America.

Rudy met Betty, his loving wife of nearly 65 years, when they both worked at Toledo Pipe Threading. He built the home where together they would raise a family of seven children, 14 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren (with one more on the way). During that time Rudy moved on to Libbey-Owens-Ford, where he worked for 36 years.

Rudy was a proud veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, where he served as a sergeant in the Korean War. In addition to participating in the capture and securing of Seoul, Rudy was one of the “Chosin Few,” the fortunate survivors of the Chosin Reservoir campaign. In November 1950, during the coldest winter North Korea had experienced in 100 years, a U.N. contingent including U.S. soldiers was in pursuit of North Korean troops when Chinese forces trapped them in the mountains.

Surrounded and outnumbered 8-to-1, Rudy and his fellow Marines undertook a 13-day, 78mile trek to the Sea of Japan to reconnect with American Forces. Though cut off from any support, they fought their way through 10 Chinese infantry divisions, losing thousands of soldiers to combat and the cold. Many historians consider the Chosin Reservoir campaign to be among the most savage battles of modern warfare.

Rudy was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with four bronze stars, the United Nations Service Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, awarded by the Republic of South Korea.

In addition to Rudy’s loyalty to his country, he was devoted to his family. Unconditional and constant love, support, and pride for all his family are values that Rudy taught through example and will remain with us all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Josef and Theresa, and his brothers Joseph and William. Rudy is survived by his wife, Elizabeth R. (Heintschel) Beham; his children Sharon (David) Leveton, Carolyn Beham, Robert (Debra) Beham, Ronald Beham, Dr. Richard (Joyce) Beham, Joseph (Elizabeth) Beham and Barbara (Terrence) Thomas; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brother Walter (Mary) Beham; and his sister-in-law Mary Beham.
