Retiring firefighter shares time with son

Lieutenant Jeff Young will officially retire from the Sylvania Township Fire Department on March 2 of this year. At that time, Young will become the longest-serving full-time member of the Department. “When it’s time to go you just know,” stated Young. “I have been on the job since I was 18 years old. I’m lucky to be where I am today ... to have made it 30 years.”

One of Young’s greatest joys was having the opportunity to work alongside his son Dillon, a part-time firefighter at the station in addition to being a full-time medical ICU nurse at

ProMedica Toledo Hospital. “His mother and I are so proud of him,” said Young. “He is going into paramedic training this July. My wife has a master’s in nursing. Dillon chose a path right down the middle. He shares the family’s intense need to be there for people.”

After serving three decades, Young has no regrets about the path he chose for himself. He stated, “You can be rich and have every material thing, yet have nothing, or you can be the poorest of men, and have everything. I chose at a young age to do something positive for the human race. I have a wonderful family that has always supported me. I have everything I could ever need.”

Beverly Freshour, Fenwick owner, admires the original works of artists Carol Connolly Pletz and Harold Roe. What started as a hobby turned into a lifetime career for Sylvania area resident Beverly Freshour and her late husband, Royden. The couple, she a former office manager and stay-at-home-mother, and he a pharmacist, collected prints of works by Peter Parnall and Bev Doolittle. They purchased many in their collection from Fred and Andrea Kruse, owners of Fenwick Gallery, 3433 W. Alexis Rd. When the Kruses decided to retire in 1979, they approached the Freshours to see if they would be willing to take over the gallery.

“Our children were in high school and I had always been a crafter,” Freshour recalled.

“Buying the gallery seemed to be a good fit at the time. And, 38 years later, that truly has been the case. But now it is time for me to step back.

Although I am ready to retire from the business, I will miss all of my customers who have also become good friends.”

The gallery is for sale as is the framing shop, complete with its computerized mat cutter and extensive inventory of framing materials.

“We learned early on that being able to offer complete custom framing jobs in a timely manner was very important. It set us apart from others in the same business. But that meant we had to have ample materials on hand,” she remembered. Custom framing has long been a large part of the business.

“We took many framing classes and even learned how to use gold leaf. We learned how

to do museum-style mounting; how to create shadow boxes and much more,” she added.

“When we learned about the computerized mat cutter, we bought it immediately and actually were one of the only galleries in the area to have this. That also has served to set us apart.”

Soon after acquiring the gallery, the Freshours also began learning all of the nuances of the business. In addition to an array of limited edition prints, Fenwick Gallery became the gallery of record representing local artists Harold Roe, Carol Connolly Pletz and Rama Adkisson. Many of their original works are on exhibit along with their limited edition prints and note cards and are still available for sale.

Through the years, the gallery has been home to shows by visiting artists. Most notably was the exhibit by Gary Burghoff of M.A.S.H. fame, whose opening corresponded with the then Jamie Farr LPGA golf tournament. Jamie Farr came by the gallery for the opening celebration of Burghoff’s show and included the Freshours and Burghoff in many of the activities for the tournament.

Freshour is assisted by her over 25-year fulltime staff member Terry Basham. The gallery is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mobile Meals volunteers made special deliveries of pet food in January to those meal clients who requested the service. The special pet food purchase is made possible by the pet food drive at Churchill’s in Maumee as well as from grants and individual donations. The Pet Food Program was started to eliminate meal clients feeding their food to their pets. The goal is for people and pets to eat their own food, providing better nutrition for both.

Youth and adults invited to participate in the Tree City Film Festival contests

Students Honored at Americanism Program

Students learn different aspects of filmmaking participating in ‘Shorties U.’ The Sylvania Community Arts Commission is inviting youth and adult participants for two individual film-creating programs this spring.

Students can learn filmmaking basics at the Shorties U workshop, a youth filmmaking program presented by the Sylvania Community Arts Commission. Shorties U returns this year on Saturdays, Feb. 24 and March 3 from 9-12 p.m. and Saturday, March 10 from 9-2 p.m. and will be held at the Sylvania Historical Village, 5717 Main St. Students in fifth through eighth grade can participate in the three-day workshop led by local professionals teaching video production essentials. Lessons include developing an idea, writing a script, shooting on a budget and the fundamentals of editing. Teams will consist of five to 10 students with the goal to create a short, three-minute film at the closing of the session. A pizza party and Q&A session for the students with the local professionals will close out the workshop on March 10 from 12-2 p.m. at J&G’s Pizza Palace.

Program participation is limited to the first 50 registrants. Interested students can register online at sylvaniaarts.org/TCFF by Feb. 9. The cost is $65 per participant.

Adult and high school film teams are invited to compete for a $500 prize by participating in the 50-hour Challenge, SCAC’s weekend-long filmmaking contest Join the weekend-long 50-hour Challenge from March 16-18. Under the pressure of a ticking clock, teams write, shoot, edit and publish their own short films in just 50 hours.

At the kickoff meeting, teams will receive a series of requirements that must be incorporated into the film. These will include a

genre, a prop, a line of dialogue, a character name, and a filming location. After the allotted 50 hours, films are submitted and judged by a guest panel consisting of professionals in the film industry.

The team who places first wins $500 and second place earns $250. The team winning the audience’s choice award will earn $100. In addition to these prizes, the planning committee will select two teams for the Spirit of Sylvania and My Heart is in Sylvania awards, earning them free entries into next year’s competition.

Teams of any size can consist of high schoolers or adults. Interested teams should register online at sylvaniaarts.org/TCFF by March 1. The fee is $45 for adult teams and $35 for student teams.

The community is invited to attend the local film-viewing event at the Tree City Film Festival. Shorties U and the 50-hour Challenge are just two parts of the unique Tree City Film Festival weekend event. Films created during the Shorties U workshop and the 50-hour Challenge will show during the festival, April 27 to 29 at Olander Park’s Nederhouser Community Hall. In addition to the Shorties U and 50-hour Challenge films, The Tree City Film Festival weekend also includes screenings of Oscar nominated short films, both animated and live action.

Sylvania–Then and Now

Continuing with the buildings in Sylvania that are 100 years old and older, now we will head north on Main Street to the houses north of Erie Street. Starting on the west side of the street, the first house was built in 1907 and therefore is 111 years old. When it was built, the property owner was William Elg. The first available census with someone listed living in this house is the 1910 census.

William Elg was listed as 42 years old, married for 15 years and employed as a laborer for the railway company. His wife Mary was listed as 33 years old, and they had one child living in the home named Lottie shown as 14 years old and attending school.

This census says they owned the home free of mortgage.

William and Mary Elg were still living in the house as of the 1920 census. He was listed as 52 years old and she was 43 years old. He was employed at this time as a salesman at a retail hardware store.

The Elgs sold this home in 1923 to Hubert Shanks, who only owned the home for five months, and sold it to George and Orpha Keene. The Keene family owned the home from 1924 until he died in 1946, and she died in 1952. Her obituary notice said that her son George W. Weisweber and her stepdaughter Ina D. Keene Peck survived her.

A building permit issued in 1926 to George Keene had allowed his builder, Lou Coutchure, to enclose a portion of the front porch.

In the 1930 and 1940 census, George and

Orpha Keene were still listed living in this house. In the 1930 census, George was 60 years old and was listed as the manager of a cigar store. Orpha was listed as 47 years old.

Living with them was her son George Weisweber, 27 years old, divorced, and working at his stepfather’s cigar store. By the 1940 census, George was 71 years old and Orpha was 56 years old. Her son George, by this time, was remarried and renting the home to the north.

An article that was printed in the Sylvania Sentinel newspaper in 1932 told of George Keene’s life. According to the article, he arrived in Sylvania in early 1900. He took a job with the Toledo & Western Railway Company helping to build their rails from Sylvania to Fayette, and then from Sylvania to Adrian. Keene then took over the operation of the large hotel and saloon that was located on the northwest corner of Main Street and Maplewood Avenue. He also purchased the saloon of Mike Reiter, which was operating in the building at 5645 Main St., (Hudson Gallery). He then went into business with Oscar Jacobs operating a garage where they transformed touring cars into one-ton trucks. Keene later took up the occupation of a tree surgeon, and for 13 years traveled over many states tending to the trees of many wealthy people. While in this business, he worked for J.D. Rockefeller in Cleveland as well as many other famous people throughout Illinois and Wisconsin.

After retiring from this business, he again purchased the hotel in Sylvania and operated it “until the country went dry.” Then he operated a poolroom in part of the building where Key Bank is located today. In this

2018 article it said: “Mr. Keene remembers when the site of his present home, 5817 Main St., was an old orchard, and just beyond was dense forest.”

Two years after Orpha Keene died, in 1954, this house was transferred to George’s daughter, Ina Keene-Peck. She was married to Clifford Peck, who had a colorful history in Sylvania as the Mayor during “the Roaring Twenties.” His obituary notice said: “Mr. Peck was mayor from 1921 to 1929, presiding in the mayor’s court as cases from throughout Lucas County were brought there as the result of the crackdown on liquor which followed the enactment of the Volstead Act.” Since 1922, Clifford and Ina Peck had owned and lived in a home at 6831 Maplewood Ave., prior to acquiring this home at 5817 Main St., from her parents in 1954. They apparently moved to this Main Street house because, according to an article written in 1957 about the outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd who robbed a bank in Sylvania in 1930, “Mayor C.C. Peck, who now lives at 5817 Main, happened onto the scene in the family auto. As he pulled alongside the idling

Studebaker he stared into the muzzle of a revolver. ‘Back up and get out of here’ he was told.”

So from 1954, until Ina Peck died in 1968 and her husband Clifford died in 1969, they lived in this house. By 1971, the home was transferred to their daughter Ruth J. PeckKnepper, who had married Daniel H. Knepper in 1941. She owned the home for 10 years, and the 1970, 1971 and 1972 Suburban Directories show Daniel Knepper living in the home. They appear to have also lived for a while in the family home on Maplewood Avenue.

The 1973 through 1981 Suburban Directories show the following renting this Main Street home while Ruth Knepper still owned it: 1973 – Vacant; 1974 – Thomas Killam; 1975 – Paul Browning; 1976 – Michael C. Ward; 1977 – James Hart; 1978 to 1980 - Jeffrey Brisley; and 1981 – Barry Becker.

In 1981, Larry L. Watkins purchased the home and he is currently still listed as the owner and occupant today. We all know Larry as our longtime local barber.

Fair Districts=Fair Elections: Making Your Vote Count

What do the League of Women Voters of Ohio, Common Cause Ohio, AAUW of Ohio, Ohio Education Association, Ohio Environmental Council and Ohio Farmers Union have in common? They are among the nearly 40 organizations of the Fair Districts=Fair Elections coalition, which is collecting signatures to put a congressional redistricting amendment on the November 2018 ballot. If the group is successful and collects the required 305,000 signatures, voters would have the chance to end the practice of partisan gerrymandering in Ohio.

Legislative response

Noting this citizen group’s effort, the Ohio legislature began considering a redistricting plan of its own for the primary ballot. However, initial drafts did not meet Fair Districts=Fair Election goals of an open, bipartisan process that allows for citizen input and minimizes the division of cities and counties. After two days of testimony from people urging legislators to do the right thing and not just tweak the current process, the Ohio Senate announced on Jan. 25 that it would not pursue a May Ballot proposal if Fair Districts=Fair Elections did not support it.

What is gerrymandering?

Redistricting occurs every 10 years, after the new census, to rebalance the districts based on population shifts. When left to the legislature, partisan politics takes over.

Drawing districts to favor one party or candidate has been practiced since the 1780s, but the gerrymandering name was not coined until 1812 when Massachusetts Governor Eldridge Gerry signed a bill for a redrawn map that benefitted his party.

One contorted district north of Boston was said to resemble a salamander, and the descriptive term “gerrymander” was born.

According to Pamela Karlan, professor of Public Interest Law at Stanford, “It used to be that the … voters elected their representatives, and now … every 10 years the representatives choose their constituents.”

How is it accomplished?

While it is illegal to draw districts that disenfranchise racial minorities, partisan gerrymandering is a common practice, and both political parties are guilty. Using

today's technology and available data, cities and counties can be sliced and diced to carve out a district that favors any candidate or party. It’s called “cracking”and “packing.”

Cracking involves breaking apart groups and spreading them into different districts, where they will be in the minority. Packing results when groups are consolidated into a single district so their strength and influence are contained – Ohio’s infamous “snake on the lake.”

Comedian and political commentator John Oliver likens cracking and packing to the decision of where to seat your embarrassing relatives at a wedding dinner. Do you want to put them all at one table and contain them, or do you spread them around at different tables to lessen their impact?

Keep the pressure on the Ohio legislature to do the right thing. Sign the Fair Districts=Fair Elections petition to ensure that if the legislature does not act, voters will have the opportunity to vote on the amendment to end gerrymandering in November.

Why should voters care?

Brian Carso, J.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of history and government at Misericordia University, said, "The creation of highly partisan, gerrymandered congressional districts may well be the most pernicious problem plaguing our nation's democracy today.

You can trace nearly every legislative dysfunction to it – from unfixed problems to partisan gridlock to government shutdowns."

If you are a minority voter in a gerrymandered district, your vote, quite literally, does not count. The district’s designed majority will always win.

Gerrymandering also increases extremism in politics. When a candidate is assured of re-election, he/she does not have to be responsive to constituents and does not have to negotiate or compromise.

Why drawing districts should be taken out of the legislature?

The drawing of districts will never be nonpartisan until the legislature no longer controls the process. The Fair Districts=Fair Elections amendment takes the process out of the legislature and transfers it to a bipartisan commission.

Ohio voters in 2015, by a 71 percent margin, created a bipartisan commission to draw general assembly (state house) districts. The Fair Districts=Fair Elections amendment proposes using the same bipartisan commission already approved by voters to draw the U.S. congressional districts.

Whiteford Elementary School art teacher Ani Geha chose her fourth grade art students to participate in the 2018 Sylvania Street Banner program sponsored by the Sylvania Community Arts Commission and underwritten by Republic Services.

The banners created by Kira Cowdry, Scarlet Holston, Colton Webster and Kaden Woyame were selected and are now flying from posts in downtown Sylvania. The winning banners were unveiled at Hudson Gallery on Jan. 18.

“This year, I wanted our students to embrace the diversity of our community and to show how that diversity could bring us together as a community” Geha said. “I challenged the students to create selfportraits using colors they felt best described them. We used four words: diversity, community, identity and equality. Each student also picked the word they felt best described their self-portrait.”

SCAC Executive Director Jennifer Archer stated, “Ani did an amazing job with these banners. She invited the kids to create artwork representing who they are, and allowed them the freedom to creatively express themselves. They are all individuals yet they all have so much in common. And, Ani and her students’ artwork truly represents the sense of identity, equality, diversity and community we all share.”

Archer continued, “Another interesting facet of this program is that Republic Services, basically a trash collection

company, has been sponsoring this art project for seven years. They are a great community partner and make us realize that things are not always what they seem.”

The four winning banners will fly over the streets in downtown Sylvania for three months. After they are removed, they are recycled into banner bags created by local artist Kina Hoffman to be sold to raise funds for public art and arts education programming.

New Olander Park System Clean Stream Youth Patch Day workshop set board member appointed

Registration is now being accepted for Partners for Clean Streams’ 16th annual Youth Patch Day Workshop on Sunday March 18, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., at the University of Toledo’s Lake Erie Center, 6200 Bayshore Rd., Oregon. Registration begins at 1 p.m. The workshop is designed for students in second to fifth grade. Many participants are Boy and Girl scouts as they can fulfill specific merit and environmental badge requirements, but the workshop is open to all children. This year’s workshop consists of six different learning stations, each featuring a unique hands-on activity that focuses on a water topic relevant to local watersheds.’The stations revolve around the

theme “Our Watershed, Our Home.”

Regional water quality experts from groups, such as Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District and The Lake Erie Center, lead the activities at each learning station. At the end of the day, each participant will receive a special patch to recognize his or her completion of the workshop.

Pre-registration and a fee of $5 per participant are required for the workshop.

When done right, a COHAT (comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment) is a complex and time-consuming process. The importance of the whole involved process cannot be overstated, as a mouth with dental disease is painful and infected. When not done well and thoroughly the dental care can actually be harmful and speed the process of tooth decline and loss. A COHAT is not a once in a lifetime procedure, but should be part of a pet’s regular wellness care. A commitment to aggressive home care, including daily brushing and dental chews will decrease the frequency of needing to do a professional prophy. Human dentists recommend twice yearly cleanings and this is with people brushing and flossing regularly.

Therefore, it should not be a surprise that a pet’s mouth can develop dental disease as young as two years old and they may need a COHAT every year. The procedure includes evaluating gum health, measuring and charting periodontal pockets, full mouth xrays and nerve blocks before starting electronic and hand scaling. Without extractions our COHAT takes about 1.5-2 hours from start to finish. Severe disease, extractions and other factors can easily double the time necessary to do a complete and professional COHAT. We recommend owners begin brushing their pet’s teeth as soon as adopted. A COHAT when there is a minimum of tartar and gum redness is the best time to do the treatment. Anything less than a complete COHAT is not worth the money spent. Pet health insurance will pay for a portion of a dental procedure.

Dogs are no longer wild and are not like wolves. Dogs have been domesticated for over 30,000 years and their digestive systems and nutritional needs have adapted to being a companion of humans. Deceptive TV ads about dog food need to be exposed as the advertising gimmick they are.

Grain, particularly corn, is not a filler, it is a quality nutrient. Corn contains lots of energy, has a great well tolerated gluten protein and has healthy omega fatty acids.

When a dry food lists meat as the number one ingredient you should know that the label must state the ingredients in order of amount before processing. Meat is 70 percent water and dry food is 10 percent moisture, which means the meat may no longer be the most common ingredient.

By-products and meals are not a negative when present in foods. These nutrient sources are regulated by AAFCO to contain only healthy, edible and digestible animal parts.

Because these sources are already processed their place in the pecking order is stable.

Pet food manufacturers can change ingredients with out changing the label or notifying the consumer as long as the new ingredient remains in the same place in the list as the previous ingredient.

Most online pet food rating services are not science-based and are mostly biased opinion.

CRAIG STOUGH MAYOR’S MESSAGE

On Jan. 31, 2018, the city of Sylvania and eight other local communities met and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to Craig Stough create the Toledo Area Water Authority (TAWA).

The ceremonial signing by the nine leaders signals agreement that a regional water authority is needed and should follow the organizational blueprint envisioned in the MOU. The nine communities are the cities of Toledo, Sylvania, Maumee and Perrysburg, the village of Whitehouse, Lucas County, Northwestern Water & Sewer District of Wood County, the Monroe County Drain Commission and Fulton County. The current water service contracts with Toledo all expire in the next 10 years.

The MOU will now be considered for approval by the legislative bodies of those nine communities. Sylvania City Council will officially began consideration at their Feb. 5 meeting, with approval by March 15 the goal.

TAWA will provide for regional ownership of a water system that can provide abundant safe drinking water with redundant backup sources at fair prices for all. Fresh water should be a regional asset for attracting new business and residential development.

Promoted

Michael Behan has been promoted to the position of lieutenant/paramedic in the Sylvania Township fire department, taking a slot vacated by a recent retirement.

Fire Chief Mike Ramm informed Sylvania Township trustees that Lt. Behan has been on the department for nearly 19 years and that he was chosen from the promotion list after discussions with the department’s two deputy chiefs. The chief also said the lieutenant will stay at his station and take over for the lieutenant who retired from there, so the transition should be easy.

Safety Town Registration

Sylvania Township police have begun registration for this year’s Safety Town for children who will be entering kindergarten this coming school year. The program this year will be from June 11 through June 15 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day at Central Trail Elementary School, 4321 Mitchaw Rd. Children are given instruction in fun ways about bus safety, fire safety, strangers, electrical safety and other circumstances they might encounter. Instruction comes from licensed teachers as well as police and firefighters and guest speakers from the dog warden's office, ProMedica Flower Hospital emergency room, Sylvania Schools transportation office and others.

Registration forms are available at the police department building, 4420 King Rd., or under “police” on the township website, www.sylvaniatownship.com.

Zoning Changes Recommended

Zoning changes necessary for a housing development on nearly 55 acres on Brint Road have been recommended for approval by the Lucas County Planning Commission.

Water system shutdowns such as occurred a few years ago must never happen again. I envision a system with water from the Collins Park Water Plant interconnected with water from the cities of Oregon, Bowling Green, Monroe and perhaps even Detroit serving as a backup, creating a truly regional water system. There is also the possibility of a new water plant built on a city of Sylvania easement at the western end of Lake Erie.

We have worked on a regional water system for more than 20 years. With the help of the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments (TMACOG) and the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce, great strides have been made in the last two years.

TAWA would be a standalone Ohio Revised Code 6119 public utility with its own independent board of directors and manager separate from the regular political subdivisions.

With the legislative approval of the member communities, TAWA would be established by action of a Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge. The next two years will be spent establishing the new utility, planning for efficient operations and for redundant water sources in the future.

Water rates for all member communities will be gradually equalized over the next eight years.

Thank you to all the regional leaders who have invested their time and energy to formulate this vision for the future of safe water in northwest Ohio! Their hard work and willingness to find solutions will benefit us all as we move towards a better future.

Mitchell Construction Co. is planning to build 50 villa-style residences and 114 single-family homes on the property east of Mitchaw Road. The development is to be named Quarry Ridge. The commission recommended approving a request for the residential planned unit development for about 15 acres of the site beginning at Brint Road. That is the portion of the land which is intended for villa construction.

They also recommended approval of a zoning change from a planned unit development to residential for the northerly remaining nearly 40 acres of the project. The northern border of the proposed development is Pacesetter Park.

The staff of the planning commission recommended approval because the proposed development is compatible with surrounding residential uses, is consistent with the township land use plan, and will have minimal adverse impacts on the area.

The proposal will be heard next by the Sylvania Township Zone Commission, with a final zone change decision later by the Sylvania Township Trustees.

City Officials Take Road Trip

Sylvania Police Chief Bill Rhodus, Mayor Craig Stough, City Council Members Sandy Husman and Katie Cappellini, Council President Mary Westphal, Rick Arnos of Republic Development and city of Sylvania Economic Development Director Bill Sanford traveled to Fishers, Ind., on Jan. 18. The purpose of the trip was to visit a project by Republic Development, which will be developing the SOMO property located in downtown Sylvania. The group toured Saxony Village; a 750-acre planned mixed-use community and apartment complex similar to what is planned for Sylvania. The group met with John Wechsler, head of Launch Fishers, and toured the co-working space of entrepreneurs working on start-up, high growth and high potential enterprises. ‘It was a day well spent as we could see first-hand what will be coming to Sylvania and also how an enterprise like Launch Fishers operates and what it could mean to a community,’ Sanford said.

Zoning Boards

The two Sylvania Township boards, which deal with zoning matters in the jurisdiction have finished their reorganization for this year. The Board of Zoning Appeals will be led by Tim Schlachter, as chairman. He replaces Al Hayes. Vice-chairman this year is Don Miller, replacing Mr. Schlachter who had held that post. The board will continue to hold meeting at 5 p.m. on the first Monday of each month.

The zoning commission will continue to be led by Mary Himmelein, as chairman, with John King continuing as vicechairman.

Its meeting time is likewise unchanged, with sessions set for 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month.

THE MOUSE TRAP Let’s Talk Passwords

Your password can ruin your life. I know that sounds dramatic, but it’s true. If someone figures out the password to your email, you’re in trouble.

Janis Weber Social media? Even worse. Once hackers access your online bank account, they can wreck your finances, and you may feel the repercussions of that break-in for years. Most of us have the wrong idea about passwords. We think they have to be convoluted messes, like F$%Th5l2K!&. The theory reigned for years that passwords should be nonsensical and hard to remember. Thanks to a new round of research, cybersecurity experts have changed their tune. Yes, you should still avoid guessable passwords like “p@ssword1� or “letmein.� But a strong password also can be logical, fluid, and easy to remember. While passwords help protect your information, cybercriminals are more sophisticated than ever. If they break into your accounts, you may not recognize the damage until it’s too late.

This is the most important part: No matter what your password is, it should withstand 100 guesses, which means it shouldn’t be tied to any public information about you or your family. Hackers often turn to your social media profiles to find information about you, and a little data goes a long way, such as your

birthday and the name of your pet. Experts believe that criminals can guess the average person's password nearly 73 percent of the time, and they can often access other accounts by using slight variations on the same password.

Instead of thinking of your password as a secret code, think of it as a “passphrase.� These are strings of words that are both easy to memorize but hard for anyone else to crack.

Suppose you wanted to be an astronaut when you were a kid, and your favorite color is yellow. You have never mentioned these facts online, and only your Mom knows such trivia about you. You could compose a passphrase like “ilikeblueastronauts.� You’ll never forget it, and the passphrase will confound hackers for (literally) centuries.

You might want to sit down for this one.

The new guidelines suggest allowing users to create passwords up to 64 characters in length.

As if that isn’t weird enough, the new guidelines also allow spaces between words.

While many people just try to meet the bare minimum requirement of using eight characters, you will get a much stronger password by stretching things out. Easy to remember. Hard to crack. It may take websites some time to catch up to the latest guidelines, but you can still create a memorable password that meets current restrictions. You might choose something like “ArizonaCardinalsfootballisnumber1!� or “Igivemyjob1000%everyday.� Those meet the requirements of having at least eight characters, a special character, and upper and lowercase letters.

I hear this every day. “All my passwords make me crazy. I keep them short and repeat them, or a form of them, from one site to another.� All it takes is one hack, one time, one website (especially social media), and you are cooked. Lock your websites now like you would lock your home. Assume you will be hacked someday if you don’t make your passwords more sophisticated.

there that will actually create a nasty password for you while storing them. Don’t bother with the free ones, try a couple free trials till you find the one you like. Currently I am using LastPass and am paying very little for it.

Did I tell you that typing in your passwords on your computer is a great idea but PLEASE DO NOT SAVE this information on your hard drive. Save it on an external source like a flash drive, only plugging it in when you need to alter something. Print it out if you like and hide it. If the bad guys get into your computer, they can access your pretty-typed password list. AMEN‌.

A long-range plan to connect the Metroparks and other natural areas in the Oak Openings Region of Western Lucas County with a multi-purpose trail is a step closer after action taken recently by the Metroparks Toledo Board.

The three-member Board of Park Commissioners voted unanimously to award a construction contract to G6 Infrastructure, LLC, of Maumee, to build a 1.9-mile trail connecting Secor Metropark in Berkey to Wiregrass Lake Metropark in Spencer Township. The contract is for $726,000. A grant from the Clean Ohio Fund will pay for 75 percent of the project.

The trail, expected to open this summer, will connect the existing All Purpose Trail at Secor with the entrance to Wiregrass Lake. It will be 12 feet wide for most of that length, with 10-

foot-wide sections of boardwalk made of concrete spanning sensitive wetland areas. The trail will be mostly on Metroparks-owned land, much of it acquired since 2002. The exception is a short section along the right-ofway on Dorr Street.

The Secor-to-Wiregrass connection is the first leg of what will eventually be an approximately 13-mile trail extending to Oak Openings Preserve in Swanton. Oak Openings already connects with Fallen Timbers Battlefield and Side Cut Metroparks in Maumee via the north fork of the WabashCannonball Trail.

Construction will also begin this spring on the first phase of an extension to the University/Parks Trail in Sylvania, which the park district hopes will one day connect Wildwood Preserve and Secor Metroparks.

First step approved for Oak Openings Trail Connector

Koop Family Therapy acquires office building on Sylvania Avenue

Doug and Michelle Koop of Koop Family Physical Therapy recently acquired the office building complex at 4859 W. Sylvania Ave. from attorney Robert Candiello, who is leasing the second building for his law office.

John Healey of Miller Danberry was the listing agent and Donna Pollex of the Loss Realty Group represented the Koops in the transaction. Bill McNeal of Signature Bank handled the financing for the acquisition.

Mike White of Buckeye Real Estate Group served as the general contractor for the office renovations, transforming the former law office space into appropriate space for the Koops’ physical therapy practice.

“We opened our office 11 years ago and were ready to have our own building,” Doug Koop related. “We began looking last spring and we liked everything about this property.

It is close to our former office with very convenient parking for our patients. We love the setting and the park-like view we have from our windows. We were able to combine the two office spaces in this building to create a patient-friendly area for treatment and the other space we need for the practice.”

He continued, “Once we found the property, everything moved very quickly thanks to everyone who was involved.” The Koops began seeing patients July 31.

Hours for appointments are 8 a.m to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. “And we have the flexibility to work patients in quickly if

necessary,” the Koops offered.

As a family practice, the Koops work on everyone from infants to elderly. “Our oldest patient was 101,” Doug Koop remembered.

“We offer a full range of hands-on therapy, including aquatic therapy. We also offer our patients sports-specific training, gait training, and a specialized program for athome, self-directed physical therapy. And we are back, neck and headache specialists and also work with those who have orthopedic or joint issues. We design individualized programs for every patient with whom we work.”

“In addition, I have been certified to perform Active Release Technique, a highly specialized hands-on technique,” he pointed out.

"Patients are sometimes referred to us by physicians and have sustained injuries from work or vehicle or sports accidents. Many patients are recovering from surgery," he explained. The Koops added that patients have the right to choose where they go to therapy once there Doctor gives them a referral. Many times patients choose Koop Family Physical Therapy because of word of mouth and the special services that are offered.

and received his advanced degrees from Ohio University as did his wife, Michelle.

The Koops worked in South Carolina for three years before moving back to Sylvania to be closer to his family. Prior to opening Koop Family Physical Therapy in 2006, he worked at an outpatient physical therapy facility. Mrs. Koop concentrates primarily on raising their children but she also worked at several physical therapy facilities before they opened their practice. She has experience with acute care, sub-acute care, long-term care and outpatient care. Currently, she does the billing and offers patient care at the practice.

The Koops celebrated the five-year milestone of their business by earning their doctorates in Physical Therapy from Ohio University. “We decided to pursue our doctorates so we could offer our patients a broader knowledge base. The work required for the program not only added to our understanding of the field, it also deepened our passion for what we do,” he reported. “In addition, we gained a deeper understanding of the body system, which allows us to make educated referrals based on our knowledge of differential diagnosis. This all provides a better continuum of care for our patients.”

Dr. Jessica Lockhart was on her way to veterinarian school at Michigan State University when she suffered horrible back pain. “Three visits to a chiropractor and my pain was gone,” Dr. Lockhart remembered. “I realized that I wanted to help people feel better like I did. This was what I wanted to do, so instead of vet school, I enrolled in the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Florida.”

“When our first child was born, we decided to move back north to be closer to family, and I found a position in Cleveland. Then, with the upcoming birth of our daughter last May, we knew we wanted to move back home. My ultimate goal was to open my own practice,” she said.

For the last year and a half, Dr. Lockhart looked for space, working with Hunt Sears of Miller Danberry Commercial. “After looking at several locations I found that I wanted to open my office in Sylvania,” she stated.

Recently, she leased the 1,000 square foot space in River Crossings at 6377 Monroe St. and opened Healthy Family Chiropractic LLC. “This truly is a family effort,” she said. Her father, Chris Brown, a contractor, did the build-out of the space with help from her husband, Eddie and her in-laws, creating a treatment room, an exam room, private office and a family-friendly waiting area. “My mother watched our children throughout the

“I am actually a pharmacist by profession,” stated Eli Antypas, owner of Eli Antypas Jewelers, located at 5300 Monroe St. “I graduated with a degree from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy. I discovered that I missed the family business. My grandfather overseas was a jeweler, followed by my uncle.

We have a family jewelry business dating back to over 100 years. I wanted to continue that legacy. In addition to the wealth of knowledge from my family, I started taking courses with GAA [Geological Associates of America] to expand my expertise.”

The former pharmacist decided to co-found Antypas Jewelers with his brother in 1999. “At one time, we had two stores. One was on Alexis Rd. and the other on Monroe Street. We then combined both stores into one location on Laskey Rd. We worked for 22 years together,” he stated. “We dissolved the partnership in 2012 after I made the decision to have my own place.

I started a new chapter of my life and moved to this location [Monroe Street] that same year. It has been amazing.”

Antypas has a deep passion for creating his own unique pieces. His niche is custom design work. “We can create anything from a picture or a sketch and we can turn a vision into a reality,” stated Antypas. “I come up with a model to meet my client’s expectations. Then we add, subtract and tweak it to create the ultimate design.”

Some of his most popular unique creations are items designed for local schools. “Three of our four girls graduated from St. Ursula Academy,” he stated. “While they were in school, I felt there was a need for something creative and different to show their school pride. I started making SUA jewelry. After that, I was approached by other schools. I began making jewelry for Notre Dame, St. John’s, St. Francis and Central Catholic. Recently, I have started making designs for Southview and Northview. They are all very different creations that are unique to each school.”

Another large part of the business is doing jewelry appraisals, jewelry repairs, engraving, Lucas County Probate Court appraising, watch repairs and battery replacements. “We do anything and everything that has to do with jewelry,” stated Antypas.

The most important thing to the business owner is that his costumers are 100 percent happy. “We stand behind our pieces with a lifetime warranty. That applies to our repairs,” he stated. Although Antypas enjoys the excitement of creating new designs, he feels the best part of his business is dealing with his customers. He stated, “The most rewarding thing about going to work is the closeness I feel to my customers. They are part of my family— part of me. I always remember that they are supporting us. They have put bread on my family’s table. They mean everything to me.”

Even the bitter cold can’t keep the regulars away from the farmers market in downtown Toledo on Saturday mornings. “It’s the cream cheese croissant from All Crumbs Bakery and Gini's Jennifer Ruple coffee (Flying Rhino Coffee) that get me out of bed,” said Carol Kremer of Toledo’s Old West End neighborhood.

One of the best kept secrets in town is that the Toledo Farmers’ Market, located at 525 Market St., is open year-round. Beginning in December, the overhead doors are lowered on the west end of the market, and the heat is cranked up for shopping on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through April. “It’s a great atmosphere, and the fact that it’s inside makes it even greater,” Kremer added.

During the winter months, the market offers apples, root vegetables, greens, beef and chicken, farmstead cheese, locally roasted coffee, baked goods, salsas and dips, honey, wine, plants, candles, soaps, jewelry, pottery and more.

The market, formerly owned by the City of Toledo, was purchased in 1996 by the

Farmers’ Market Association of Toledo. Eight years ago, the association began its quest to operate year-round. “The first year, we had no heating system, but after that we put in overhead radiant heat which really made a difference,” said Dan Madigan, market manager. “We can accommodate up to 35 vendors at the market during the winter. We do what we can to keep people coming back.

It’s good for our businesses to keep them engaged with their customers throughout the winter months,” he added.

Considering the crowd that the market draws each weekend, it’s the place to be and to socialize with other local foodies. “The people who come are very loyal,” said Madigan. “We have people of every demographic coming together here.”

“We love being part of the market for many reasons,” said Corinne Cassis, owner of Sitto’s Bakery which offers handmade baklava, pita chips and date cookies. “Our products are unique, and we can speak directly with our customers. We really enjoy interacting with them and their families, and we look forward to seeing them every week. Another very important reason we enjoy the market is that it allows us not to have a store; the markets are our stores and therefore we can pass the savings directly to the customer,” she

“I think the winter market is more fun. People come down on the most brutal days,” she said.

In addition to offering a variety of produce and products, the market is a great place to learn. “There’s a lot of produce out there that people don’t know what to do with,” said Madigan. “The market provides a great opportunity to find out how to cook things from the people who grow them for a living.”

For example, Andy Keil of Andy Keil Greenhouse sells black winter radishes. “They are something I can harvest in the winter. You just slice them and soak them in salt water and snack on them,” he suggested. Leeks, kohlrabi and parsnips are also available at Keil’s booth.

This winter, warm up at the market, and experience what brings the regulars back week after week. “It’s a place to meet great people. I come every week to support the people here,” said Micah Graber. “There’s always something going on.”

Chet Trail The Sylvania School Board has created the position of Diversity Officer and has hired Chet Trail to fill that role. For the past two years, Trail has been serving as a consultant for the Sylvania School Administration as the Diversity Recruitment Specialist.

In his new role, Trail is responsible for recruiting and hiring practices which will promote changes within Sylvania Schools and he will interact with people at all levels and recruit faculty with a diverse background. He will deal with conflict resolution and provide advice, guidance, and support on equality and diversity issues. Trail can respond to complaints and provide information on appropriate responses. He is also responsible for researching, applying and promoting diversity initiatives and sharing best practices. Making presentations and hold ing workshops for staff, students, and the community to raise awareness of diversity in the schools is also part of his role.

In addition, Trail will serve as a liaison with community groups and a coalition of higher education institutions.

“Our school population is growing much more diverse, which is exciting and challenging. The Sylvania School district enrollment is up five percent over the

past two years. Having Chet as a part of the administration is a great asset for the staff, students and their parents, as he can help us better understand and work with our growing changes,” Sylvania School Superintendent Adam Fineske said.

Trail, a graduate of Libbey High School, received All-State honors in basketball and baseball. He attended Bowling Green State University on a basketball scholarship. He played five years for the New York Yankees organization and two years for the Baltimore Orioles.

Trail was a local and national sales representative for Blue Cross of Northwest Ohio for 10 years and for Savage and Associates for 20 years. He served as the Northview freshmen boys basketball coach and later as the Southview girls basketball and track and field coach. He is also the pastor of Grace Temple.

Counselor Honored

Central Trail Elementary School counselor Kristine Kunkle has been awarded the Elementary Counselor of the Year and the overall School Counselor of the Year for 2017 by the Ohio School Counselor Association. She will now be considered for the American School Counselor of Year.

Big Cheers for Project Unify

Members of the combined Northview and Southview Project Unify teams celebrate an amazing evening of fun. Project Unify is a program of the Special Olympics that brings students with and without disabilities together through sports. The Sylvania Schools Project Unify Northview and Southview teams played a high-energy basketball game during the evening of the Battle of Sylvania Crosstown Classic, held Jan. 19, at Northview High School. Students created the vision for the event with the assistance of Sylvania School District special education teachers. Project Unify unites students by creating inclusive sports opportunities. Matches are held between Northview and Southview varsity games. Players, cheerleaders, and fans came together for a memorable experience of unified sportsmanship. Jessica Minard, Sylvania Northview High School intervention specialist, who began the inclusive sports program at the Sylvania high schools stated, “My vision and mission is that one day every school in the NLL will have their own team. A STUDENT SPEAKS As you probably know, I love my school more than I can often put into words. However, I am sometimes extremely let down by the student body’s lack of participation in schoolsponsored events. While LIBBY STUPICA we can pack a gymnasium for an NDA vs. SUA sporting event, I’ve realized it’s much harder to create the same type of excitement for non-competitive activities.

This year, Executive Student Council worked collaboratively with the students of the University of Toledo to plan the second annual mini RockeTHON. The university puts on a 24-hour dance-a-thon each year to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.

After partnering with them last year on a mini event that raised $2,000, we were excited to plan another event this year. It was called “Ohana-thon,” due to its Hawaiian island theme. We hoped to build on the success of last year and raise thousands for an indispensable charity.

The work began when we met with the students from UT. Over the course of a few

months we reviewed the music, activities, and logistics of the event. Just like last year, UT students would provide the music, volunteers to help with set-up and check-in, and one family to share their story of how they benefitted from the Children’s Miracle Network. NDA student council was responsible for food, drinks, decorations, a henna station, cornhole, and other fun activities. We worked tirelessly to promote the event through Twitter, flyers in the school hall, and morning announcements. We even repeated announcements during lunch to drum up enthusiasm!

Despite all our efforts to promote the event, the number of students that came to buy their tickets as we sold them during lunch disheartened us. Forty students…. it was not the enthusiastic reaction we had hoped for for such a meaningful charity event. I couldn’t quite fathom how so many students would refuse the opportunity to make a $10 donation, which included a return on their investment of everything from food to entertainment. The night of the event I saw Snapchats of house parties. Those students definitely could have spent time with their friends supporting our charity event, but they chose not to and I had to choose to not be bitter. I wasn’t going to let my disappointment hinder the fun night ahead.

As I decorated with my fellow student council members and was surrounded by close friends, my enthusiasm grew. Girls came dressed in floral Hawaiian shirts, leis, and sunglasses. People moved through the gymnasium, playing Knock-Out, cornhole, and danced to tunes from Moana. My friend, Leen, volunteered her time to do henna, and she painted beautiful intricate designs on the hands of the girls. The energy was amazing.

Once everything was under control and my duties as a student council member were over, it was so nice to spend the rest of the evening enjoying time with my friends. We learned the dance choreographed by the UT students, and I won the hula-hooping contest for the second year in a row. When the family shared their story of how their daughter received treatment thanks to the Miracle Network, I was especially proud of the event we had organized. Despite not receiving as much support as we had hoped for, the night was a success. We raised another $2,000+ for charity, all while having a blast.

Sylvania schools receives fiscal award with distinction from Ohio auditor of state

A recent financial audit of Sylvania Schools by the Auditor of State Dave Yost’s office has returned a clean audit report, and the district has also received the Auditor of State Award with Distinction.

Hand washing is not over rated. With the recent severity of the flu, children should learn the importance of washing hands at an early age. Hand washing is a vital part of Desiree Thompson our daily routine for our preschoolers as well as our school agers here at SCS. When hand washing is taught properly it can be the first line of preventing the spread of germs including the flu, common colds and most types of infectious diarrhea.

Preschoolers can be taught the proper way to wash hands while singing a song that lasts 15-20 seconds long.

Hand washing steps that should be followed are to make sure you are using warm water (not hot), lather with soap for 15-20 seconds and make sure you are washing the entire hand including tops and wrists. Pay close attention

Youth exhibit from Bulgaria will include SV student art

Eighty-five works of art by high school youth, including pieces by eight Southview students, are on display through Feb. 9 at the Common Space Center for Creativity, 1700 N. Reynolds Rd. The exhibition is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The exhibition is an international youth art exchange project titled ‘Venture Beyond the Academics’ sponsored by the U.S. Bulgarian Embassy in cooperation with The Mika Foundation in Sophia, Bulgaria and the Arts Council Lake Erie West in Toledo. The project is designed to get beyond the academics and into the social and cultural aspects of youth art expression; to demonstrate that youth expression is important; that youth have similar issues, interests and subjects they illustrate for others to view, to be aware of and to create discussions.

There are 46 artworks from Sophia, Bulgaria, 27 by students from the Toledo School for the Arts and 12 by students from Sylvania Southview High School on exhibit.

Musician of the Week Senior Lily Conway is the Northview High School Musician of the Week. She has been an outstanding member of the Wildcat Band all four years of high school. She has been a leader in the saxophone section as well as in the entire band, both musically and socially. As vicepresident, she has been a lead voice in the happenings of the band program this year. Conway has been a member of the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, Jazz Cats, Jazz Band, Theater, and has participated in OMEA festivals as well as regional honor band events. She is also actively involved in NHS, Leadership Academy, Student Council, Class Government, and Interact. She is the daughter of Scott and Kate Conway.

Lourdes hires bowling coach

Torrie Decker Bartalone has been named Lourdes University’s first head men’s and women’s bowling coach.

Lourdes University athletics director Jo Ann Gordon announced the hiring of Torrie Decker Bartalone as the Gray Wolves’ first head men’s and women’s bowling coach. Bartalone will assemble both teams as they prepare for competition in the program’s inaugural season of 2018-2019.

“I'm honored to have the opportunity to work at Lourdes University and coach the bowling team,” Bartalone stated. “It is going to be an awesome journey to watch the program grow from the ground up. I hope to build not only strong bowlers, but also successful students and great people in our community.”

Bartalone arrives at Lourdes from Robert Morris University in Illinois where she has spent the last season as an assistant coach. She

is currently in the process of obtaining her United States Bowling Congress gold certification, the highest level of certification a coach can achieve. She is currently a silver certified coach, and has also served as a NCAA Division I Head Tournament Director.

“Torrie is truly a student of the game,” Gordon stated. “She is extremely passionate about bowling and has an excellent track record of recruiting. I am excited for her to be a part of the Lourdes community, as she is committed to the mission of both the athletic department and the University.”

Bartalone is a 2015 graduate of Valparaiso, earning her Bachelor of Arts in psychology.

She also has an Associates of Health Sciences degrees.

McCord wrestlers win NLL title; first for Sylvania in 40-plus years

Even though there are three junior high schools with wrestling programs in Sylvania, no Sylvania junior high team has ever won a NLL League wrestling title in the leagues 40+ year history.

That all changed Jan. 27 when Sylvania’s McCord Tartans wrestling team traveled to Springfield and after a hard day of wrestling were crowned the 2018 NLL Junior High Champions.

Going undefeated through the regular season the McCord team had high hopes to finish the season with Sylvania’s First NLL Junior High Wrestling League title, and did so by placing 14 out of 16 wrestlers at the tournament and 11 in the finals.

Placing for McCord were Jeager Honnold, fourth; Victor Ford, third; and Falcon Reese, third. The League runner-ups were: JJ Short, second; Dylan Anstine, second; Karter Hine, second; and Michael McDaniel, second.

McCord also had seven placing first and earning League Champion titles: Tyler McDonald, Andrew Liber, Luke Humason, Zach Harshman, Dylan Cox, Ethan Nowels and McCord’s first back to back wrestling League Champion, Cole McKinley.

In order to win the league championship, McCord had to defy some odds; they had to beat power house programs Perrysburg and Anthony Wayne who have won the title for the past 10 seasons. McCord’s wrestling team is coached by three former Sylvania wrestlers,

Head coach Luke McKinley, and assistant coaches Todd Enis and Hunter Topolski.

“For the first time ever, the McCord Junior High wrestling team has won the League Championship and I couldn’t be more excited for this group of young men. I remember our first meeting of the season and these young men told me that they wanted to be league champions and for them to go out and do it goes to show the determination that they have,” Coach McKinley said.

Winning the League title qualifies the McCord Wrestling team to travel to Columbus next month to compete for a Junior High State Championship.

Southview diver wins NLL

Southview High School diver, Benny Golding, won the 2018 NLL Diving Championship. The Southview student has been diving since the sixth grade. “My coach at the time wanted me to practice with the high school team,” recalled Golding. “I got spooked and took some time off. I began diving again in the 8th grade.” Golding and his Southview teammates are grateful that he dove back into the sport. He explained, “We practice together five times a week, for up to two hours, for half of the year. Diving is an individual, high intensity sport with a competitive atmosphere.

It really helps to have supportive teammates. I

Golding hopes to continue diving at the university level. He is thankful for his coaches, teammates, and family. “They are always behind me,” he stated. He advises anyone in the sport to have role models. His are Phil Koester, the head coach of Southview High School, and Olympic diver from Great Britain, Tom Daley. “I also would tell anyone in the competitive world of diving to persevere and to stick with it. If you can get the confidence to try a difficult dive, you will continue to grow and accomplish great things.”

SV Athletes of the Week Swimming

Swimmer Kotone Pax has been swimming competitively since she was eight years old for Sylvania Tsunami Swim Club and has been a four-year varsity member of the Southview team. Kotone recently broke two individual records as well as two relay records. She broke the NLL record in the 100 yard breaststroke while earning the title of NLL champ in the same event.

Her coach, Kris Moellenberg, added, ‘Kotone is a very hard worker. She is not only relied upon for her talent, but she has become a senior leader for the girls on the team. She is a fierce competitor who is determined to end her high school career on a high note.’

Ice Hockey

Sammy Vassar is a four-year member of the Southview hockey team, serving his second year as team captain. He has been playing ice hockey since the age of five, including stints with Team Toledo and Sylvania Maple Leafs.

Recently Sammy scored six goals vs. Fremont Ross and before that he tallied back-to-back hat tricks vs. Athens and Dublin Scioto in the Olentangy Orange MLK Tournament. Sammy credits the team’s turn-around on team chemistry and an overall positive attitude among his teammates.

Sammy maintains a 3.33 GPA and will attend The University of Toledo.

Curling club offers classes

BY FRED LEFEBVRE With the winter Olympics underway viewers may find they are more interested in the sports getting television coverage. One of those covered will be the sport of curling. It looks simple, has few rules, no body contact, and both men and women can participate.

Closer to home, the Bowling Green Curling Club will be offering instruction classes during the two week Olympic Games break. Classes for those interested are $25 and are being scheduled now for days and times between Feb. 16-March 3 at the Black Swamp Curling Center on N. Dixie Hwy.

Sylvanian Matt Smith is the treasurer for the BGCC, which this year is celebrating its’ 50th anniversary. Smith and the club will use the two-hour instruction classes to familiarize newcomers with the basic rules and moves used in the sport. .

The club hopes to entice new curlers to join the club and become members of the numerous leagues that use the facility from October to April each year. Marjorie Wohlfarth

Marjorie Ellen Wohlfarth was born at home on a farm in West Lodi, Ohio, to Thurman and Goldie Mittower, on Aug. 19, 1929.

She passed away Jan. 25, 2018. Determined to better herself, Marjorie raised chickens to put herself through nursing school. Marjorie graduated from Thompson High School, then Maumee Valley School of Nursing in 1950. For several years she worked as a registered nurse at Maumee Valley and Riverside Hospitals in Toledo, Ohio.

Marjorie met the love of her life on a blind date. After a brief courtship they were married on Aug. 22, 1953. About a year later, Marge set aside her nursing career to begin raising a family.

For many years, Marge enjoyed staying home to can tomatoes, green beans, and make the best strawberry jam around. She was den mother to Cub Scout Pack 247.

Marge, along with Karl and all four boys, “enjoyed” traveling out west, pitching their family tent each night along the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Arlene Sellers brothers Calvin and Edward Mittower, and step mother Bernice Mittower.

Marjorie is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Karl; sons Paul (Charlotte), Tim (Carol), Ted (Carolyn) and Mark (Sherry) Wohlfarth, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Marjorie will be dearly missed by her family.

Michael L. Paquette

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Michael L. Paquette, age 64, Toledo, Ohio. Mike passed away Jan. 26, 2018, in Reading, Mich., of natural causes. Mike is survived by his wife, Sherry (Dunlap) Paquette, children Danielle Paquette with fiancé Chad Branum, Ethan, and Michael Paquette with wife Ashley. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Rita Paquette, and his brother Paul Paquette.

Mike graduated from Roy C. Start High School in 1971. He went on to complete his bachelor’s degree in psychology and business management at the University of Toledo.

Mike worked in the pathology lab at ProMedica Toledo Hospital for over 20 years.

Mike enjoyed riding his motorcycle, driving his Jeep and relaxing at the lake with Sherry and his dog, Moe, taking sunset cruises on their boat.

Ann Marie Jacob

Ann Marie Jacob, 78, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018, at Clarksville Nursing and Rehab Center, Clarksville, Tenn., following a long, brave battle against brain cancer. Ann was born August 15, 1939, in Toledo, Ohio to James and Jean (Klimkiewicz) Shamy. She graduated from St. Ursula Academy in 1957 and married her eighth grade sweetheart Edward Jacob in 1962.

They were married 49 years, raised two children, and enjoyed five grandchildren, until Edward’s death in 2012.

After her kids were grown, Ann used her interior decorating talents working alongside her father, James, in his downtown store, Shamy Furniture, for six years until its closure in 1992. She also spent many years volunteering her time hosting events for the Toledo Ability Center, several times serving as chairperson of their annual style show.

Ann Marie lived a charitable life, showed great empathy to those in need and tremendous generosity to family and friends.

Naturally drawn to bonding experiences with friends, Ann loved spending time with her Circle of Friends and the Leo luncheon group she started. She had an amazing knack for entertaining or hosting parties in her home. She could throw together a lovely dinner party for 12 or a rollicking bash for 50 in no time. In addition to entertaining and home decorating, Ann enjoyed reading a good novel, listening to music, watching a movie, and playing Words with Friends. She

also had an amazing ability to laugh at herself as well as a contagious silly side memorialized in the hilarious stories we’ll always cherish.

Unable to live alone after her brain tumor diagnosis, Ann spent the last 18 months of her life in Clarksville, Tenn., where her daughter, son-in-law, and adoring grandchildren were honored to share in the final months of her life.

Ann is survived by her children, James Jacob (Jackie), Kristin Ryan (Steven); grandchildren, Kailey, Lindsey, and Trevor Jacob, and Anna and Julia Ryan; brother-inlaw, Larry Jacob (Pat); sister-in-law, Janice Musarelli (Tony); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, and sister, Sally Beeler.

Shirley A. Archer, 93, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away Jan. 31, 2018, at the Elizabeth Scott Care Center. She enjoyed fishing with her late husband, sewing, and gardening.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Julie (Mike) Rodriguez; sons Don and Ronald Keller; six grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; daughter-in-law Janice; and K-9 companion Webs. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Archer; sons Paul and Robert Keller, and James Archer.

I recently had the opportunity to listen in on a group of males gathered for breakfast at a local diner. Don’t judge. Tables in close proximity, horrifically slow service and a heaping scoop of human nature made it open season for eavesdropping. One male shared that his wife would allow “the gang” over for the big football game if he would simply help clean their abode. The men immediately responded with a few expletives and definitive opinions on how they would be ice skating in Hell before that ever happened. Their buddy told them to start lacing up their skates. He stated, “I dump a sh** ton of Pine Sol on everything, grab a beer and wipe it up in time for her to walk in the door and be blown away by the smell of CLEAN.” Ahhh, if it were only that easy for us females.

Unrealistic expectations

My grandmother’s DNA is coursing through my veins. She once had my grandfather (aka Pops) take apart an airtight, sealed crystal lamp so she could clean the inside of it. She was a woman who ironed everything that didn’t move. Even my Pop’s undies were starched and pressed–which could explain his often inflexible demeanor. Couple this with countless home shows featuring Martha Stewart wannabes, and I don’t have a chance of ever feeling adequate in the home cleanliness department.

The “Marthas” do not understand what we real moms have been through. It is a miraculous day if there is a remote or phone charger in sight. TV “Marthas” may be able spew tips on how to remove pesky water stains from a marble surface, but this is not reality. I would like to see the experts get red hot candies and hardened frosting out of golden retriever fur or remove a reindeer drawing in permanent marker off a child’s face before a family Christmas photo.

Real tips for REAL women

Sharpie markers belong under lock and

key and used with great caution. If not, you may find yourself dealing with a situation way beyond Windex and elbow grease. Back in the day, my poor mother was forced to contend with my then 3-year-old brother who discovered a black Sharpie. Why he chose to darken his private “anatomy” is still a mystery.

Soft Scrub with bleach and hairspray are great at removing black ink from leather. I made this discovery after my middle daughter’s “Harold and the Purple Crayon” moment. The pen she used to scribble her “name” on notebook paper made a pilgrimage up the side of the off white leather couch until she happened upon the flat seat cushion that would become her canvas.

Keep tabs on all Chapstick in the home. I swear the stuff should come with an operator’s permit. If this unknown substance, that I’m certain is a molecule away from something illegal, somehow sneaks into the dryer, I’m afraid there are no remedies to remove melted lip balm from fuzzy pjs and Alpaca socks.

Give up on ever having a ‘pretty towel’

I have only known one woman who has successfully maintained “pretty towels.” They hang in her guest bathroom like museum pieces. I am in awe. My pretty towels have met horrific fates. One has a bleached perfect imprint of my daughter’s face from her acne facial wash. One was flambéed by the mother of my international student getting too close to my gas range and the other met its end at the least desirous end of our dog after she consumed red hots and frosting. Pretty towels are the Moby Dick of the home ... just within reach and impossible to harness. Let them go!

In fact, let it all go. Listening to the men I learned a great deal. Why do I spend so much time striving for perfection? I may do a quick round up of my dust bunnies, dump a strong-smelling product on all my hard surfaces, grab some chips and dip and watch a big game ... or HGTV.

Francis Basler

Francis “Frank” D. Basler joined his loved ones in Heaven on Jan. 1, 2018. Born Aug. 20, 1920, to William and Catherine (Steiner) Basler in Toledo, the 97-year-old lived nearly all his life in Sylvania Township. He proudly served in the 11th Armored Division in Patton’s Army as a tank driver across Europe in WWII earning medals including a Bronze Star. He went on the 2008 Honor Flight.

A lifetime factory worker retired from Toledo Scale, he followed sports, was a longtime Tigers fan, loved playing cards especially Skip-Bo and UNO, was a pet and music lover. Frank enjoyed fishing, traveling to Florida, vegetable/flower gardening and just sitting in the sun in his outdoor recliner. He married Irene Baise on Oct. 10, 1942. They had 55 years together till her passing in 1997. Frank then had 16 years of companionship with Christine Bussow till she passed 2014.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, brothers Leo (Madonna), Carl, Charles, Richard (Donelda), and sister Katherine (George) Smith, Dick Valentine, his in-laws Henry (Clara) Baise, brother-in-law Lloyd (Helen) Baise and Christine Bussow. Left to mourn his loss daughters Linda Walters, Janis (Tom) Rockwell and son Don, 14 nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous great, greatgreat, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. Memorials to the donor’s choice.

Vern Victor Lerch Jr.

Vern Victor “Vic” Lerch Jr., 87, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home Jan. 17, 2018, after a long and healthy life, which he often referred to as blessed.

Vic was born on July 16, 1930, to Jessie and Vern Lerch Sr. of Toledo, Ohio, and attended Scott High School in his youth, after which he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Korean War. He met his lifelong sweetheart Jacqueline “Jackie” Ann Lerch before he left, however, and they were married in 1952. His memories of Korea included numerous friends and events, but time spent with orphaned children was particularly meaningful; a Christmas meal of frozen fruit cocktail with hot coffee was

another memory he often recalled, though with far less joy.

After his return from Korea and completion of military service he began working at Sun Oil Refinery in Oregon, Ohio, initially as a ditch digger and years later retiring as an engineer.

He spent his entire career at Sun Oil, where he was blessed with more than a few lifelong friends.

Vic and Jackie bought their first house after his return from the war that he fondly recalled as “the wreck.” He fixed up steadily with the help of a dear friend after working night shifts at Sun Oil. He sold the house with enough sweat equity invested to purchase the home where they ultimately raised their four daughters.

He retired early allowing them time to travel a good deal and spend time at his cottage on the lake, which gave him tremendous joy for thirty years. More recently, Vic was a volunteer for years at Flower Hospital alongside his wife, Jackie, until her passing in 2015. They were members of the First United Methodist Church in Sylvania.

Vic is survived by daughters Karen LaPierre, Dawn (Scott) Gillespie, Bonnie (Don) Brieschke and Jennifer (Mario Perez) Lerch; his seven grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Beyond an abundance of fond memories, his life was a collection of hard work, a quiet strength, family, unwavering nightly prayers and an ever-present sense of humor. Hot dogs also come to mind, which were his favorite. His ultimate love however, was his wife and sweetheart of 69 years, with whom he shared much joy and adventure. Earlier that day he had mentioned, “I wish I was with my babe!”

He passed away that evening, which happened to fall on their 66th wedding anniversary.

And our eternal gratitude for the NWO hospice nurse, Jeanine, who diligently and lovingly took care of both our parents.

Contributions in celebration of his life may be given to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Anna Margaruitte Renshler, 100, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away Jan. 21, 2018, at Kingston Residence of Sylvania. She was born Dec. 23, 1917, in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, to Jacob and Mary Ann (Bates) Karg. She married Earl Karl Renshler and together they raised three children.

Family members and friends, some traveling

many miles, gathered to celebrate Anna’s 100th birthday, which she was very proud of accomplishing. She worked many years at Sears Roebuck (her favorite area of the store was the candy counter) and Starr Anton Cleaners in Toledo, Ohio. She loved playing pinochle and bingo at the Sylvania Senior Center and at Kingston. More than anything, Anna treasured being a grandma to her seven grandchildren.

Anna is survived by her daughters Bonnie Everett and Judy Rife; son Kenneth (Margaret) Renshler; grandchildren Tad (Donna) Everett, Teri Dress, Thomas C. (Janice) Everett, Eric Rife, Kevin (Megan) Renshler, Kara Renshler and Kristin (Matt) Vicelja; 14 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings and son-in-laws Thomas Everett and Charles Rife.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Kingston Residence of Sylvania for her care and the friendships she made along the way.

Virginia Lee Webb

Virginia Lee Webb, 85, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away Jan. 18, 2018, at ProMedica Flower Hospital.

She was a 1968 graduate of Stautzenberger College. Over the years Virginia was employed as a homemaker, legal secretary, and a Realtor with various area real estate companies before retiring in 1996.

She is survived by her daughter Deanna (David) Neuman; sons David (Diane), Michael (Kathy) and Stephen Webb; grandchildren Adrienne (Casin), Stefanie, Paige, Kevin (Stacey), Kristen (Adam), Shaun, Virginia, and Kevin; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother James Snyder.

Jeffrey Goulet

more than 30 years. He was an avid NASCAR Fan, who enjoyed following Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. Jeff enjoyed spending time at home and working in his yard.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beth Crosby; son Ralph Obenour; mother Marilyn Goulet; and sister Tammy (Jim) Raszka. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Charles Goulet; brother Stacy Beals; and grandparents Irene and Walter Sergent.

Thomas Carroll

Thomas R. Carroll, 60, passed away Jan. 13 at Windsor Lane Health Care.

Born in Toledo, he was the son of Joseph and Alice Carroll who predeceased him. graduated from He Macomber and worked for Bill True and Rays Towing. He enjoyed showing his custom van and collecting diecast cars.

He is survived by his brother Joe (Gail), sisters Linda (Mike) Hahn, Mary Carroll and many nieces and nephews.
