Sylvania Franciscans Elect New Leadership Team

The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, elected a new Leadership Team April 19 during the community’s quadrennial General Chapter. The five-member team will oversee the Congregational governance and the day-to-day operation of the Congregation. Chosen for a four-year term, the team will be formally installed during liturgy at 11 a.m., Sunday, June 26, in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel on the Motherhouse grounds in Sylvania.

Sister Mary Jon Wagner was elected Congregational Minister; Sister Theresa Darga, Assistant Congregational Minister; Sisters Sharon K. Derivan, Rachel Marie Nijakowski, and Shannon Schrein, were elected Councilors.

Receives Small Business Advocate Award

Rep. Barbara Sears received the Small Business Advocate of the Year Award from the Council of Smaller Enterprises for her strong support of entrepreneurship in Ohio. Ohio Rep. Barbara Sears has been chosen to receive a Small Business Advocate of the Year Award by the Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE) and Greater Cleveland Partnership for her successful efforts to support small business owners in the state.

Last year, Rep. Sears introduced an amendment to legislation to protect Ohio entrepreneurs by helping to ensure that they would not be penalized with increased workers’ compensation rates, outstanding balances or uncovered claims for occupying work space that was previously used by a separate business with negative claims experience.

COSE has been a longtime advocate for reforming so-called “successor liability” practices.

“It is vital for Ohio that state government encourage and promote new business including entrepreneurs and start-ups,” said Steve Millard, COSE Executive Director.

“Rep. Sears stepped up and went to bat for

entrepreneurship in Ohio by introducing this vital amendment, which became part of a bill that was signed by the governor. We are pleased to acknowledge and applaud Rep. Sears’ successful efforts to promote economic growth in Ohio.”

Rep. Sears is one of two recipients of the 2015 Advocate of the Year Award. The other recipient is Ohio Senate President Keith Faber.

Rep. Sears said she is honored to receive the award. “Small businesses are the backbone of not only Ohio’s economy, but of the United States,” said Rep. Sears. “Working on legislation that improves the opportunities of success for all small business is a goal that every Representative should be singular focused on each day at the Statehouse. As a small business owner myself, I have great respect for the men and women who put their personal capital and talents to work to provide not only for their families but to improve the entire state of Ohio.”

Sylvania Historic Village’s log home gets a lift

The 1840s log house in the Sylvania Historic Village has been given a face-lift ... actually a base lift. Rick King and his crew from King Construction of Pettisville, Ohio, stabilized the building and jacked up the house so a new, hand-hewn, 13-foot white oak log could replace one of the original supporting foundation logs.

Andi Erbskorn, Sylvania Historic Village executive director said, “The original poplar log had deteriorated due to weather and insect damage, which caused the building to shift. Last summer, after a big storm, the log house actually shifted. This renovation was absolutely necessary to preserve this house.”

King had to set the replacement log and fit it into the structure. “Actually, this house is

put together just like you would assemble Lincoln logs,” Erbskorn explained.

After the log was settled into place, King craftsmen Ryan Christman and Caleb Waidelich repaired other areas in the house, re-chinking spaces between the logs with a caulking material to help preserve the building for the future. “In earlier days, homeowners would have chinked the spaces between the logs with mud and grass to keep the weather out,” Erbskorn pointed out.

“This would have to be done every year as the materials would wash away.”

The one-and-a-half story log house was relocated from its site in Weston, Ohio, to the Sylvania Historical Village in 1997.

A new business, Being Magic Creations, LLC, will hold SPLEZZAZZ, a FUNdraiser for The Victory Center, on May 14 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Center for Conscious Living, 7410 Noward Rd. between Waterville and Whitehouse.

SPLEZZAZZ (spluh-zazz), which means “Splash into Life! Jazz Things Up! And Feel Your Pizzazz!,” is designed to free people from the daily grind and allow them to experience themselves in new ways. Through inspiration stations, magical makeovers, and creative activities, these party-playshops promote bonding and reduce stress.

“We don’t have many models for using play as adults,” said theater educator and Being Magic Creations’ co-director Michael Ellison, Ph.D. “At some point, we learn that play is something children do. And yet Apple Inc. and other major companies stress the importance

of play for innovation and productivity. ” “SPLEZZAZZ actually evolved from the popular art parties where partygoers paint one picture led by an artist,” said Being Magic Creations’ co-director and local artist Melanie Stinson, CCTEM. “Our goal is to help adults discover the transformative power within the arts and within themselves.”

Attendees are encouraged to come in playful, comfy, magical, fun and fantastical attire or costumes or however they like. They are invited to experiment with different ways of seeing themselves using provided hats, masks and costume pieces. They also have the opportunity to decorate himself or herself or a T-shirt, cap or mask to take home.

Ballet Theatre of Toledo continues to soar to new heights with ‘Beauty and the Beast’

They have done it yet again. The Ballet Theatre of Toledo’s latest production of “Beauty and the Beast”again highlighted the already professional level this company has reached.

Set to the haunting and yet familiar music of Jean Sibelius, with choreography by Nigel Burgoine, this was another “world first” for Ballet Theatre of Toledo so far as a combination of the Finnish composer and the traditional folk tale was concerned.

In the tradition of some of the leading ballet companies both here and overseas, the comparatively bare stage let the audience’s imagination bring life to the settings and the discipline of the corps-de-ballet, and the individual principals added to Nigel Burgoine’s inspired choreography.

Special mention must be made of the two principals, Claire Hyder as Beauty and Mason Bassett as the Beast. They maintained the strict discipline needed in what were demanding roles in almost continuous on-stage appearances, not once letting their dancing fall out of character. Both in their solo appearances and pas de deux there was that professionalism that comes only when there is a complete simpatico between dancers. Clean and precise pointe work shone through the production.

Technical feats of fouettes and sharp petits allegro from Fiona Connolly and Mackenzie Abodeely were highlighted but not over used.

The roles of the cousins were portrayed and danced with soft and supporting passion by Lilly and Rebekah Schmitz. The drama of this production was achieved by all on stage and upheld with confidence. Very touching and sad moments between Beauty and her father, Mike Weaner, kept the audience aware of the depth of the story.

The maturity of this company, now in its 11th year, continues to amaze. It is hard to believe that some of the dancers are not professional! Even the junior members of this company are obviously inspired by their elder fellow cast members.

Typical of the standard we have come to expect from the only company in Toledo that specializes in classical ballet, the four gypsies Hannah Gerken, Johanna Alexander, Jaqueline Weaner and Larissa Huffman, moved with technical precision but still conveyed the mood of Sibelius’ music adding stylistic character movements to their dancing and blending joyful expressions with the pirates throughout the story. The maids Elizabeth Wolff, Hannah Pruiett and Emma Hennesy kept humor and technique in their portrayals of the Beast’s servants.

Equally, the Market Girls, essentially the Corps de Ballet in this production, enhanced the overall effect of the company. The flowers were the youngest dancers of the cast and lifted everyone’s spirits with the warmth of their smiles. This company aspires with each successive production to reach for further heights in the discipline that is the dance.

Toledo is fortunate to have such a company as the Ballet Theatre of Toledo and the international reputation of choreographer Nigel Burgoine adding to its arts scene–a company which many cities would be proud to claim as their own.

Lindsay Smith was a career diplomat in Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs, serving as First Secretary Information and Cultural Attache in London, with postings to the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, New Zealand, United Nations New York and finally the South Pacific based in Fiji.

He settled in Toledo with his Toledo-born wife.

Fourth annual Tree City Film Festival attracted nearly 50 films

Ellyn Exley, Brent Howard and Morgan Phillips, professionals working in the film industry, served as judges for the 2016 Tree City Film Festival held April 22 to 24 in the Sylvania Historical Village Train Barn. This year there were 49 short films submitted.

There were 16 50-Hour Film Challenges; 14 high school Shorties; 12 students K-eight Shorties; and seven from students participating in the Shorties U.

Steve Martin and Pete Wojtkowiak had an entry in the festival.

The 50-Hour Film Challenge Judge’s Choice was “Sun Maker,” by Bun House Productions. The team included Kevin Koelsch, Theresa Fisher, Kevin Jansen, Danny Burkhart, Spike Holliday, Stevan Wines, Greg Scannell, Jake Garrity, Chris Koelsch and Dustin DeLelles. The runner up was “Plus One: The Musical,” by D20.

The Audience Choice award went to “Crust Examination,” by Flanders Films. Dr. David Garner, David Navarre, Rae Betz, Dani Fuller, Barb and Scott Hudson and Nelson Navarre were members of the team.

“Oddities Anonymous,” by the Metrics, received the My Heart is in Sylvania award.

“Memorie,” by Emerson Productions, earned the Spirit of Sylvania award for the film that best embodies a positive message, tells a unique story, and uses Sylvania’s downtown to its best advantage.

The High School Shorties Judges Choice award was given to “The Stranger,” by Emerson Productions, which included Logan Emerson, Laura Feltz and Alex Pauly.

“Mind,” by Madison Wagoner, was the runner up.

The K-eight Shorties Judges Choice and Audience Choice “Galaxy Girl,” was by Emma Frisch. “Bloodsteel” was the runner up. “How to Drink Water,” by Alex Murd, also was an Audience Choice.

The Shorties U Judges Choice was given to “Sibling Rivalry,” by Team Seven Wonders and “Dark Secrets,” by team I Like Turtles, was the runner up.

Joshua Lightle served as the Tree City Film Festival chairman.

Greg Scannell, Dustin DeLelles, Jake Garrity, Stevan Wines, Spike Holliday, Chris Koelsch, Theresa Fisher and Kevin Koelsch are members of Bun House Productions whose film, ‘Sun Maker,’ captured the Judges Choice award.

The Savvy Sylvanian Feels the Pain….and gets some acoustic relief

I find it amazing that as of a result of attending a seminar on Social Security benefits, I can now head down the stairs pain free. It just goes to show you the importance of wisely choosing your tablemates. I happened to nab a seat next to an approachable, kind woman and Northview graduate named Luann Canham and the gentleman accompanying her, Dr. Tom Walworth, D.C., of Walworth Chiropractic Clinic. After discussing retirement and financial prudence, we moved to another fun topic at our table: pain. I had somehow damaged my knee, making it challenging to keep up with my eight-month old “Retrieving Golden.”

Canham and Walworth informed me of a therapy they use in their clinic for acute and chronic pain in muscles, tendons and joints called Myofacial Acoustic Compression Therapy (ACT). It is a new technology in the U.S. but has been utilized in Europe and Canada for over 30 years. I was willing to give it a try even though I was not fully processing our discussion of acoustic waves, tissue targeting and mechanical stimuli. What I did process was that the therapy was like getting a five-hour massage in 10 minutes and I could take a proactive step toward healing and hitting the trails again with my pooch.

Nick Dallas has installed the fermentation system in the J&G facility and is ready to begin brewing beer.

Nick Dallas is following in his father’s footsteps as part of J&G’s Pizza Palace. J&G’s opened in 1971 and was purchased by the Dallas family in 1979. “My two brothers and I grew up in the business but I am the only one who felt that this business was a fit for me,” he

said. “I started working at J&G’s when I was 14, cleaning up around the outside of the building and in the parking lot. And, as a family-owned small business, like my dad and grandfather, I have done everything from making pizzas, gyros, spaghetti and Greek salads to serving as host when necessary.”

Now, he is ready to add a new element to the restaurant. “We have always served beer,” Dallas said. “I am going to bring Upside Brewery to J&G’s in the very near future, opening Sylvania’s very first brewery. I am using a one-barrel system and will have three to four beers on draft to start. Eventually, that selection will grow to more. I plan to rotate different beer styles throughout the year.”

“This is an opportunity to combine the unique offerings of J&G and its popularity with my love of brewing and the growing popularity of craft beers,” Dallas said. “My parents and I think this will be a winning combination, and an enhancement for our menu offerings. We make everything here from scratch using the best ingredients. We are a hands-on operation and pay attention to detail, particularly on how we prepare the food. The same will hold true for the brewery.”

Dallas has the fermentation system in the basement of the restaurant and the brewing plant on the first floor.

Five years ago, Dallas began brewing beer as a hobby. “I had a love of craft beers and had been visiting breweries whenever possible to taste different beers. I also have educated myself, reading everything I could about brewing,” Dallas noted. As brewing evolved from a hobby to a more serious endeavor, Dallas has taken classes and plans on continuing his education as time permits. He has spent the last year planning for the new brewery opening.

Rebecca Woolery, with her over 20 years of sewing experience, and her friend, Jessica Elliott, a proficient screen printer and sign maker, have combined their expertise to open Stitch 2 Stitch.

The new shop is located in the Timberstone Plaza on Sylvania Avenue at McCord Road.

Duke Wheeler of Reichle Klein negotiated the lease for the 1,050 square feet of space. “This is a prime location and very convenient for our clients,” Woolery noted. “We added carpet, created the two dressing rooms and painted,” Elliott pointed out. “The space had been vacant for the past five years, so we had a lot to do.”

A large workroom in the rear of the shop has been set up to accommodate the partners’ two

businesses. Elliott has an embroidery machine to customize tee-shirts, jackets, hats and more, along with digital vinyl printing equipment and vinyl sign making equipment. In addition, Elliott can craft signage used on windows and vehicles and more. She learned her craft working in her uncle’s printing shop, where she worked for several years.

Woolery grew up reading and interpreting patterns for her mother, Mary Woolery. She spent time helping her great-grandmother, Minnie Atwell, who made wedding and bridesmaid dresses for friends. She also credits her paternal grandmother, Ruby Woolery, with her current sewing prowess. “This is something I have always been able to do thanks to my mother and grandmothers,” she offered. While she made clothing for her children she did not begin sewing professionally until much later when she was hired by a bridal shop to help with alterations. “I found that I was able to handle those many challenges and last minute changes.”

Some of her favorite memories involved remaking dresses that were the wrong size with no time to spare. “One bride wanted sleeves to be added to a strapless gown, which I had to totally remake. Another bride had invited a friend to be in her wedding who backed out a week before. The bridesmaid’s dress was a size 32 and the replacement bridesmaid was a size 4. There was no time to order another dress so I had to remake that dress to fit,” she said.

In addition to alterations, Woolery works with clients to create custom apparel. “If you show me what you want, I can put it together,” she promised. She also offers upholstery services. “I really will tackle anything.”

The new shop is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Three projects benefit from Sylvania Area CIC funding The CIC Report...

The Sylvania Area Community Improvement Corporation was proud to be able to help with three business projects over the course of this year. The SACIC received an application from Highland Meadows Golf Club for improvements to the course for the LPGA tournament.

Midwest Securities received funds to expand their building, and a third project is being explored, which focuses on renovating a Central Avenue office building.

“The Sylvania Area CIC continues to be a great resource for business and property owners to apply for midsized loans for infrastructure development and redevelopment in the Sylvania area,” said John Healey of Danberry Real Estate Co., and current Vice President and Membership Chair of the SACIC. “There are not many communities that offer the experience and support to business that the SACIC Directors and members have.”

The SACIC Board is confident these projects will provide economic benefit through job creation, increased property value and perhaps more of the employees will want to move to the Sylvania area. Ultimately the Sylvania Schools will benefit from a broader and deeper tax base.

Balance and Mobility to occupy newly constructed facility Marianne Keller is overseeing construction progress for the new building.

After nearly a year and a half, Balance and Mobility Therapy, an APRN company, will move into its newly constructed 13,600square-foot facility at 3306 Meijer Dr. the end of May. Balance and Mobility Therapy specializes in fall prevention and balance disorders and also treats clients with back and neck pain, sport injuries, tendonitis, brain injuries, joint pain and offers concussion management, preand post- operative joint replacement therapy and much more. Director of Operations Marianne Keller, a physical therapist assistant, joined the company in 2013, bringing her 17 years of experience and her knowledge relating to balance and vestibular therapies to the APRN located at 6444 Monroe St. “We began to offer specialized balance and vestibular therapy in addition to the physical and occupational therapies APRN had established,” she explained. “However, we wanted to build a state-of-the-art facility with space to accommodate all of the therapies and services we offer. We also wanted to have an upscale facility with all the amenities so people will enjoy exercising both on land and in water. Our patients can continue the exercises they began in therapy by becomining members here where we can keep a birds’ eye view on them,” Keller explained, “With the move, we decided to change our name to better reflect what we do,” Keller pointed out. “Balance and Mobility is our primary focus and BAM, as the acronym, is very descriptive.”

She continued, “Our new facility is beautiful and has been designed with everything we need for our therapists to provide the best of

care for our clients. The welcoming lobby has a fireplace and other client-pleasing amenities. We have a 20-foot by 40-foot heated pool complete with jets. There is a heated floor in the locker room and there are even heated tiles in the shower room. The well-equipped gym, complete with its own walking track, also has strengthening and vestibular areas.

These are just a few of the many amenities designed into the building.”

BAM’s Clinical Director, Dan Sandy, PT, DPT, specializes in orthopedic and musculosketal disorders. He also has had the unique opportunity to work specifically with golfers for rehabilitation to improve overall golf fitness. Melissa Miller’s, PT, specialties include neuromuscular, vestibular, balance rehabilitation. She is a certified vestibular specialist as well as a certified balance wear fitter. Dan Schriner, MEd, LPTA, LAT has over 20 years of clinical experience treating musculoskeletal problems in adults, children, and athletes of all skill levels. He is also a licensed athletic trainer.

Aquatic or pool-based physical therapy along with occupational and speech therapy is available.

Keller anticipates providing memberships for the facility for both patients and others who choose to work out and swim. She plans to add a personal trainer along with aquatic classes and more. “We have a wonderful facility and we have already become Silver Sneaker-certified. We look to target the 55year and older population for this membership program,” she said.

Olander Park Systemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parks

This is the third article in a series about one of Sylvaniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Stars, The Olander Park System The Olander Park System, or its better known acronym, TOPS, is comprised of five distinctively different parks but is best known by its flagship, Olander Park, located at 6930 W. Sylvania Ave. This 60-acre park was developed in 1963 and incorporates the 30-acre Lake Olander.

Whetstone Park Whetstone Park However, the three-acre Whetstone Park, 5430 Rudyard Rd., opened in 1959, was the first park in the Olander Parks System.

Grilling facilities and picnic tables accommodate family outings and the ADA-accessible playground is ideal for play.

Fossil Park

Fossil Park The five-acre Fossil Park, 5705 Centennial Rd., opened in 2001 as one of only two prime Devonian Era sites in the world. Neighboring Hanson Aggregate Midwest, a local quarrying operation, delivers fossil-laden shale periodically to the park, where it is freely available to the fossil-hunting public. The fossils are encased in shale that is soft enough to break with bare hands. Fossil Park, one of only three of its kind in the world, offers bike and walking trails along with fossil hunting. There are also picnic tables scattered throughout the site. Recently, solar-powered restrooms were constructed at the park, a welcomed amenity.

Sylvan Prairie Park When it opened in 2006, Sylvan Prairie Park, 8601 Brint Rd., was a 100-acre park.

Today, with several land acquisitions, including former school property, it has more than doubled to about 220 acres. This park houses the 5.5-mile Quarry Ridge Bike Trail, making it a perfect spot for biking, walking, jogging and rollerblading. Pets are also welcome. In addition, Sylvan Prairie Park has two small lakes for fishing and a hill for sledding. There are grills and picnic tables, as well. Native plants and wildlife abound in the largest TOPSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; park.

Walking trails that connect to the University Parks Bike Trail are available and provide an excellent opportunity to enjoy the savannaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rare wildflower species that have come to life after years of dormancy and even the eastern box turtles that have returned to the area. Woodpeckers, indigo buntings, butterflies and dragonflies abound.

Olander Park Road to be repaved in May In the upcoming weeks, you will notice some construction in Olander Park. The road surrounding the park will be repaved by Gerken Paving, Inc. The firm offered the lowest quote in public bidding at about $191,377.20.

Construction was slated to take place prior to TOPSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Kids Fishing Derby, but with the cold temperatures, the project may be pushed back a few weeks. Construction will take place on half of the park at a time to reduce the inconvenience and access issues to park users.

TOPS is able to do this project with the help of the Metro Parks Fund Program through the Ohio Department of Transportation. The Metro Park Program provides state funds for construction and reconstruction of park drives, park roads, new or replacement bridges, park access roads and parking lots within the boundaries of county parks. All projects must be associated with public vehicular access to be eligible.

Eligible recipients must be part of the Metro Parks system. Projects are funded with 100 percent state monies.

TOPS has $164,027.68 available from this fund, and will contribute this entire amount to the project, pulling the remainder from the TOPS annual budget. Bike trails are not covered by this fund, so construction will include only the roads and parking lots in Olander Park, not the walking path from the north to east side.

Oven roasted turkey breast, sliced ½â&#x20AC;? thick 1 loaf of sourdough bread 3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced ½â&#x20AC;? thick 1 package bacon, cooked â&#x2026;&#x203A; cup butter Âź onion minced â&#x2026;&#x203A; cup all-purpose flour 1 quart of heavy whipping cream Âź cup shredded Swiss cheese â&#x2026;&#x203A; cup shredded Parmesan Chopped parsley for garnish Mornay Sauce In a 4-quart sauce pot, add butter and melt over low heat. Add onions and cook until soft, about 2 minutes. Slowly whisk in flour and continue to whisk to make a roux, about 4 minutes.

Whisk in heavy whipping cream. Bring to a boil over medium heat, constantly whisking to prevent roux balls. Sauce will begin to thicken as it boils.

As it is boiling, slowly whisk in both cheeses and continue to whisk and simmer until all of the cheese has been added. Add salt and pepper to taste and pull sauce from heat. Set aside.

Cut the sourdough bread into triangles and place on a serving dish. Top each slice of bread with turkey, sauce, tomatoes, and two strips of bacon. Repeat until all of the turkey has been used. Sprinkle with parsley.

1 9-inch pie shell 2 eggs ½ cup butter, melted 1 tablespoon maple syrup (pure is best) 3 tablespoons bourbon Ÿ cup corn starch 1 cup sugar 1 cup chopped pecans ž cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Heat oven to 350 F. Lightly beat eggs. Mix in melted butter, syrup, bourbon, corn starch and sugar. Stir in pecans and chocolate chips. Pour mixture in pie shell. Bake for 40-45 minutes.

Sylvania–Then & Now: 5702 Main Street

As part of our local history series I thought it might be interesting to tell you the history of the properties along Main Street between Maplewood Avenue and Erie Street.

Starting with the northeast corner of Main Street and Maplewood Avenue, this property is known as 5702 Main St. and currently has a small “mini-park” on it, while the east portion of this parcel contains a portion of the Reeb Funeral Home building.

Lucas County real estate records for this property list the following owners: July 16,1867 – Isaac Thorp Oct. 28, 1882 – Mahala Thorp April 9, 1895 – Albert and Maude Miles April 29, 1912 – Jesse C. and Minnie Wagonlander Oct. 25, 1945 – Minnie Wagonlander (wife), Hazel Wagonlander and Helen Wagonlander (daughters) Nov. 13, 1953 – Hazel Wagonlander Doley and Helen Wagonlander Gaige Jan. 15, 1954 – Helen Wagonlander Gaige April 27, 1960 – Jerome W. and Myrtle J. Laux Oct. 11, 1979 – Reeb Funeral Home Jesse and Minnie Wagonlander were married in Sylvania in 1908. In 1912, they had a two-story home constructed on the east portion of this parcel (as shown in the 1990 photo) facing Maplewood Avenue, leaving this corner lot vacant for their side yard. Jesse lived in this home until he died unexpectedly in 1944. In 1945 the property transferred to Minnie and their two daughters, Hazel and Helen, with the stipulation that Minnie was granted a life estate to live in the home. Minnie continued to live here until she died in 1952. In 1953, the home and this property transferred into Hazel and Helen’s names. Helen Wagonlander Gaige took over full ownership of this home and property in 1954. This Wagonlander family, along with the Wagonlander parents, brothers and sister-inlaws, operated the Wagonlander & Sons Department Store in various buildings in downtown Sylvania for well over 50 years.

In 1952, while the two Wagonlander daughters still owned the property, they leased out the corner portion of the parcel to the Pure Oil Company, which constructed a gas station here. Dan Knepper operated the Pure Oil gas station from 1952 until 1956, and then Frank Ryan operated the station for one more year. The Sylvania Sentinel-Herald dated Sept. 5, 1957, featured a photo of the station being demolished. The article said, “Last Tuesday, Aug. 27, 1957, a crane and bulldozer moved in and demolished the Pure Oil service station at this corner. On Monday, Sept. 1, the lease between Mr. and Mrs. Gaige expired, so Frank Ryan, who was the station owner, moved all his equipment to another location and by Tuesday the building was gone.” Pure Oil officials said that they wanted to purchase the property after the lease expired. They were unable to come to an agreement with the owners, Mr. and Mrs. William Gaige, so they removed the building, as agreed, under the terms of the lease. The article said that all that remained was the cement slab where the station once sat.

In 1960, the property was sold to Jerome and Myrtle Laux. Mr. Laux was operating Laux Motor Sales in downtown Sylvania at this time. He appears to have used the lot as a used car sales lot at times, while renting the house out to various families. Mr. Laux passed away in 1978 and one year later, the house and property was sold to the Reeb

For many years, from 1924 through the 1970s, buses picked up and dropped off riders at this corner. At one time there was a small restaurant in the basement of the north portion of what we call today the “J & G Pizza” building. The restaurant was called the “Bus Waiting Room and Lunch Room,” where people waiting for or getting off the bus could grab a bite to eat. Remember?

In the early 1980s, the city of Sylvania officials proposed creating a mini-park on this property, while Reeb Funeral Home still owned the property. The Aug. 21, 1985 Sylvania Herald newspaper features a drawing of how the mini-park was to be designed at that time.

This mini-park still exists today and is where we light our “city” Christmas tree each year, and where our parks and forestry crew provide an array of beautiful flowers each spring and summer. I also see people eating pizza from J & G Pizza here all the time.

Republic Recycling Rocks! is a winner The design of Central Trail fifth-grade student Sofie Abowd was selected on Earth Day, April 22, as the winner of Republic Services’ 2016 Sylvania “Design A Truck” contest that promotes recycling. Her winning design, “Republic Recycling Rocks!” now appears on the side of a Republic Services’ recycling collection truck and will be seen throughout the streets of Sylvania for the next eight to ten years. Chris Jones, Republic’s general manager, congratulated Abowd and presented her with a one-year family membership to the Toledo Zoo and an iPad Mini. Her class has been invited on a field trip to Republic’s landfill to learn more about how waste is handled and how to reduce waste and sustain the Earth.

More than 300 Sylvania students in third through fifth grades participated in the contest by creating designs showing the importance of recycling. This is the second time Republic Services, the private waste collection provider for the city of Sylvania, has partnered with the Sylvania Community Arts Commission and worked with Sylvania Schools to host the “Design A Truck” contest.

“This is a great program to help promote recycling and sustainability and we are happy to be part of this,” Jones said. “We were very excited about all of the entries we received and I was impressed with the creativity. Everyone on our staff enjoyed viewing the artwork and selecting the winning design,” he added.

Funny Fudge Gamers invited to Worlds The Funny Fudge Gamers, one of the Sylvania STEM First Lego League teams, was invited to attend and present at the 2016 FIRSTÂŽ LEGOÂŽ League World Festival Expo.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s World Festival Expo was held from April 28 to 30 in St. Louis, Mo. NV Honored Musicians

Senior bass player Ramon Mitchell is a member of the Chamber Orchestra and serves as president of the Northview Orchestra.

Ramon is very active in the music department. In addition to orchestra, Mitchell is also a member of Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chorus, A Capella Choir, and in both Jazz Bands as well as the student Jazz Ensemble. He has also been a member of the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestra. After graduation, he plans to attend BGSU to major in Music Education. He is the son of Laura and Roger Mitchell.

Senior Cooper Hopson has been an outstanding member of the Northview Band program all four years of high school. He has demonstrated leadership skills as well as a high level of musicality.

As a lead tenor saxophone player, Hopson has been a member of the Northview Marching Band, Pep Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Cats, Jazz Band, and Jazz Combo. He has also participated in OMEA regional events. He is the son of Keri and Brent Hopson.

A STUDENT SPEAKS Life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies. I have a pretty sweet disposition, so it may seem like everything is A-Ok 24/7, but this past month has been one of the scariest, hardest times of my life. I faced losing both of my Libby Stupica parents during two backto-back medical emergencies that occurred very suddenly, something I never anticipated.

Spoiler alert: there’s a happy ending.

It was my sister’s last night of spring break and we were heading out the door to have a final dinner together when our mom stopped us to deliver some news. She told us that as our dad was walking into work that morning, he became so short of breath that he almost passed out. He found out it was caused by multiple blood clots he had never realized he had.

We were told that he had been in the hospital since that morning, so we ditched our dinner plans and immediately headed to Flower Hospital to visit him, anxious and scared.

Schuyler and I have never experienced any health problems in the family. I wasn’t even sure if I had ever visited anybody in the hospital, with the exception of visiting a family friend and her newborn. I wasn’t prepared for what the visit entailed. I walked in to see my dad sitting in a hospital bed, hospital gown on, but a huge smile on his face. Despite his cheery disposition, it was harder than I imagined seeing my dad so helpless and reliant on oxygen tubes. He explained what was going on and I realized the situation was more serious than I had anticipated. It turned out he had numer-

SYLVANIA ADVANTAGE | FIRST MAY 2016 | 3B ous blood clots in his calf, which had traveled and caused blood clots in his lungs, which then caused multiple blood clots in his pulmonary arteries. This is what the doctors think caused the sudden loss of breath, since the oxygen wasn’t flowing in his blood to his lungs. Since he needed to remain connected to the blood thinner and oxygen tubes, he had to stay in the hospital for a couple nights. I felt emotionally numb, not knowing how to process all the information. I knew that the clots in his lungs could have been fatal. Once Schuyler and I got back home, I fell apart. There is no other way to put it: I was absolutely terrified, and felt an overload of so many emotions that I couldn’t distinguish one from the other. I was hoping and praying for the best, and didn’t let my thoughts wander to the result of the worstcase-scenario. I felt so helpless, knowing I couldn’t do a single thing but keep the faith.

The support my family received during my dad’s hospitalization was incredible. Friends brought over dinners and flowers, constantly checked in with us, and three of my good friends even surprised my dad with a visit (two pints of ice cream in hand). Knowing that my dad had the prayers of everyone, my anxiety eased. This was going to be okay, I told myself.

We are going to be okay.

And we were. My dad was discharged four days later, and although he still needed medication and had a long recovery ahead of him, I couldn’t have been happier. But just one day after my dad came home, I heard the last thing I wanted to: my mom had a tumor in her uterus. I could not believe that the second I thought things would go back to normal, there was a chance my mom had cancer. My brain didn’t want to comprehend what this meant. I was scared out of my mind; after almost losing one parent, I wasn’t ready to think about losing another one.

Although many scans allowed that the tumor could be benign, there was no way of knowing until it was removed and a biopsy was done. I wanted to believe the best, but also didn’t want to get my hopes up. Once again, my emotions were playing tug of war, resulting in a constant numbness of feeling. Along with constant school work and the date of the color run drawing closer, my stress levels skyrocketed. Somehow, by the grace of God and the support of my friends, I managed to stay sane.

My mom had to schedule a hysterectomy, where her uterus would be removed along with the six pound massive tumor. Two of her friends had had the same procedure and offered recommendations and tips to get through the surgery. She was told that after the surgery, the recovery would be a long and difficult one. Daily activities such as lifting items as light as a gallon of milk and driving wouldn’t be options until she recovered. I recently passed my driving test (on the third try, but that’s another story), and realized that receiving my license could not have come at a better time. Although we were going through a very difficult time, I knew we had the prayers and support of so many friends and family, near and far.

I visited my mom after school the day of her surgery. When I walked in, my grandparents and numerous vases full of flowers shared the room with my mom. Having been extremely nervous all day, relief flooded over me when I saw her smiling, appearing so much better than I had anticipated. I was told that everything went smoothly but I wanted to hear the answer to my biggest question. I asked when the biopsy would be done. My dad informed me that it was already done and that the tumor was in fact, benign! I could’ve jumped so high I touched the clouds when I heard that.

My mom had to stay in the hospital for three more days. Back home there are few things she is able to do, since she still has a tube attached to her and staples yet to be removed.

But every time I see her she smiles. I don’t

Southview High School students danced the the Haven House Project, Honor Flight, the day away on Saturday, April 30 from noon to Daughter Project, and World Hunger, to name a few. The students remained on their feet in midnight in an effort to raise awareness about song, dances, and other competitive games mental health issues. Nearly 300 high school throughout the 12-hour span. Split into four students took part in the program to raise teams, they vied for points through the various funds this year for the National Alliance for challenges and competition.

On April 27, the St. Ursula Academy community of students, teachers, staff, and parent volunteers boarded 12 buses and partnered with over 27 agencies in and around the Toledo community for the 10th annual Day of Caring.

“The Day of Caring is such an integral part of who we are. It celebrates our commitment to service by putting our faith into action,” said Michelle Mello, SUA Campus Minister.

In the spirit of the Ursuline tradition, St. Ursula Academy students helped stock and organize shelves at Toledo food banks, prepared and planted gardens at Nightingales Harvest, and worked with students at Brightside Academy. Additional students gardened at La Posada Catholic Charities, mulched and spruced up Navarre Park, and spent time with residents at Josina Lott. Other agencies on the list included the Collingwood Arts Center, Family House, Food for Thought, and Helping Hands of St. Louis. St. Ursula students are living their motto: “I Will Serve.”

know how my mother acts so strong when I know she is still in so much pain, but she tells me that each hour is better than the one before.

I feel blessed to be surrounded by the friends and family we have. My grandma and my aunt have stayed with my mom while my dad and I are away during the day; a group of family friends even set up three weeks worth of dinners they plan to bring over. We are truly feeling the love.

With no intention to be corny, I have to admit that going through this has made me a stronger, more compassionate person. When we suffer, we develop empathy for those in pain. I know that I will be ready to show the same kind of love that we have received when it is my time to lend a helping hand. Right now, I am just giving thanks: my dad is going back to work, my mom is slowly able to walk more and more, and our house is filled with countless, colorful bouquets of flowers.

Homeless veterans in and around the Sylvania area will benefit from the Color for Camo Run, to be held at Fossil Park Trail in Sylvania on Saturday, May 7, beginning at 10 a.m. Six sophomores from local schools--Libby Stupica (Notre Dame Academy), Michael Theis (St. John Jesuit) Jake Mossing and Luke Kilcourse (Northview), Alexa Bader (Southview) and Katie Karban (St. Ursula Academy)—are members of Youth Leadership Toledo, which gave the six students the task of creating a project to benefit the community.

Katie Karban explained, “We will throw color powder on the runners at designated

‘color stations.’ They will be small sections through the two-mile race where we will have volunteers lining both sides of the path throwing powder at runners. The stations are spaced out throughout the two-mile run so that runners go through several times. Every runner will have color thrown on them so the suggested clothing would be white so you can really see the color. There will also be individual, small packets of the color powder for sale (the color we throw will be from big boxes).” All proceeds will benefit Veterans Matter, which provides housing for homeless veterans.

Lourdes offers summer learning opportunities of summer campers return the following year with a portion choosing to enroll at Lourdes as college freshmen.

For more than 20 years, the Lourdes University Chemistry and Physical Sciences and Education departments have kept hundreds of fifth through eighth grade students excited about the sciences through innovative summer camp programs. An added bonus for summer campers is that they learn from Lourdes Education majors who design their lesson plans.

“The summer science camps give students unique opportunities that they don’t get in the classroom. Sylvania Township is currently enrolling for the 2016 Safety Township Program. Safety Township is for all children entering kindergarten this fall and living in the city or township of Sylvania or enrolled in any Sylvania school. The program is comprised of a two and one-half hour session each day for five consecutive days. Sylvania teachers, Sylvania Township firefighters, members of the Sylvania Township Police Department, and a host of special guests will be on hand. Children will receive instruction concerning personal safety issues such as stranger danger, pedestrian safety, fire safety, railroad safety, water safety, and bus safety. All material will be presented in a fun and age appropriate manner. Safety Township will be held the week of June 13-17. The morning session will be

Susan Shelangoskie, Ph.D., Lourdes University associate professor of English, has been appointed Chair of the board of directors of Toledo Integrated Media Education, a nonprofit committed to bringing a culture of positive engagement to the local media landscape by helping community members become participants. TIME is scheduled to debut its flagship enterprise, a community radio station WAKT-LPFM Toledo, on 106.1 FM in July 2016.

The TIME organization, led by a provisional board, has been working on this initiative since 2013, gathering input from the greater Toledo community and recording pilot episodes of shows submitted by community members.

“The work that has gone into this effort already is impressive,” said Dr. Shelangoskie. She added, “The new permanent board is committed to carrying out the vision of community engagement and providing a forum for the underrepresented voices that launched this project.”

Southview to host local Special Olympics More than 400 Special Olympic athletes from Lucas, Wood, Fulton, Defiance, Erie, Sandusky, Henry, Williams, Ottawa and Paulding counties will compete in the annual Area IV competition on Saturday, May 7, at Sylvania Southview High School. Admission is free and opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m.

Athletes will compete in divisions according to age, gender and ability. Track and field events range from races for wheelchair users to race-walking and running events, shot put, softball throw, and standing long jump. There will also be competition in volleyball, cycling and bocce.

This is a qualification meet for the state summer games in Columbus June 24 to 26.

Senior Chase Baker has been a member of the varsity lacrosse team the past four years. He has been the starting attackman since his freshman campaign for the Wildcats. He is a second-year varsity captain and is leading the team in scoring this spring with 20 goals and eight assists. In addition to being a vocal leader, he sets the tone in both practices and games, leading by example with hard work and effort. Baker currently carries a 3.6 GPA and will be attending Cleveland State University to play college lacrosse and study business.

Jennifer Adams, the late coordinator of Special Olympics in Lucas County. Adams coordinated recreation for the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities for 25 years. She also served as the Special Olympics regional director. She died in 2006.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. WHSC Honored Golfer Lourdes University’s Ben Torchia of Sylvania and a St. Francis High School graduate has been named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week after a runner-up finish in the Lourdes Invitational. Torchia fired a three-over par round of 72 at Heather Downs Country Club, finishing just one stroke off of the lead. He also helped the Gray Wolves secure a runner-up position as a team.

This is the first Golfer of the Week honor for Lourdes this spring, but marks the third time in his career, and second time as a junior, that Torchia has earned the accolade.

Hero Awards Banquet

On Thursday, April 21, I was privileged to attend the Council of Safety Northwest Ohio’s 49th Annual Hero Awards Banquet held at the Mayor Craig Pinnacle in Maumee, Ohio.

Stough Recognition was given to over 60 persons who aided others in need in 37 different emergencies, including two Sylvania police officers.

Fire Department

Sylvania Township trustees have authorized the administration to formalize an agreement with Medicount Management, Inc., of Cincinnati to manage billing and collections for transport services provided by the fire department.

The Sylvania Township Fire Department began early this year to transport patients to a hospital if there is no private service available and the likely wait time for an ambulance would exceed 20 minutes.

Medicount operates in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Indiana and specializes in handling billing and collections for government EMS services.

Fire Chief Jeff Kowalski said he had reviewed four billing providers before choosing Medicount. A key factor in the decision is that several local fire departments use its service and are satisfied with it, he said. In answer to a question from trustee John Jennewine, Chief Kowalski said the company’s pay will be seven percent of all fees collected.

SYLVANIA ADVANTAGE |FIRST MAY 2016 | 9B The two Sylvanians honored were Officer Philip Gallup and Officer Andrew Thompson.

They each received a Certificate of Appreciation for helping to save the life of a Sylvania resident on June 14, 2015.

The officers were dispatched to the 5700 block of Glasgow Road to investigate a vehicle that had hit a fence and come to rest in the front yard of 5735 Glasgow Rd. The driver, Tracy Stykemain, was hunched over the center console and was unresponsive. Multiple attempts to wake her were unsuccessful.

A pulse could not be found and she was in cardiac arrest. The officers removed her from the car and administered CPR. Two AED shocks were given until EMS personnel arrived.

Tracy did survive and the two officers are credited with providing a critical part of her chain of survival. I met her during the Awards Banquet and she credited the officers with saving her life. Our deepest thanks and appreciation go to Officers Gallup and Thompson.

This story was only one of many reported at the Hero Awards Banquet. I have attended this Banquet many times in the past, and I can report this is the third time Officer Gallup has received a life-saving award.

Over the years there have been several other Sylvania police officers and firefighters who have received awards. I thank and congratulate all of them. Our Sylvania community is safer and better as a result of the work all our professional safety personnel do every day.

The annual program is presented by the Sylvania Township police department with the support of several local agencies. This year’s Safety Township is June 13-17. Lessons are presented in classrooms at Central Trail Elementary School, 4321 Mitchaw Rd., with outside demonstrations on school grounds as well.

The Sylvania schools transportation department will discuss safety on school buses, a representative from Toledo Edison will tell youngsters about possible dangers involving electricity, there will be a talk about medical issues from the Flower Hospital emergency room, there will be a discussion led by the Lucas County dog warden and, of course, the Sylvania Township Fire Department will make presentations about fire safety and emergency medical services.

There are two sessions each day. The first is from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by a class from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Registration forms are available on the police site at www.sylvaniatownship.com.

projects will include Santa Barbara, Jolly, Honora, and Inland which run north from Brint Road. Those resurfacing projects will include slight extensions and turn-arounds at their northern terminus. That project will cover a total of about 1.58 miles.

Resurfacing will also take place on Black Swan, Loggers Run, Bear Creek, Cedarberry and a section of Ryanton Circle, all in the northwest portion of the township. In the northeast section of the township, roads to be resurfaced include Roberts, Webster, Carter and portions of Rudyard and Marshall.

In a subdivision east of Corey Road, there will be resurfacing on Golf Creek and portions of DeVilbiss and Northbrook. The total for the season will be 4.09 miles according to Nash.

Paving Projects

Registration is underway for this year’s presentation of Safety Township, a program meant to teach safety lessons for children entering

Sylvania Township residents will have slightly more than four miles of roadway resurfaced in different areas this season, according to Rob Nash, township road superintendent.

One of the projects will be to cover all of the 1.15 mile length of Silica Road. Residential

Recently, the city of Sylvania was awarded a $500,000 grant from the state of Ohio for the SOMO development project. The funds will be used for infrastructure costs that will be incurred in developing the site.

Mayor Craig Stough, Economic Development Director Bill Sanford and Safety Director Kevin Aller responded to the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce’s White Paper identifying community projects meeting state of Ohio funding criteria.

“Mayor Stough made an outstanding presentation outlining the economic significance and the benefits to the community of the

SOMO project after our application was accepted. He certainly made a compelling case for us to receive this grant,” Sanford reported.

He also credits State Representative Barbara Sears with championing this project to allocate funding on behalf of the city of Sylvania in the state legislature.

SOMO or South of Monroe development is an approximately five-acre site in downtown Sylvania that is being developed to re-purpose property in the downtown core of Sylvania.

The city continues to listen to proposals, which include office, retail, restaurant, and entertainment possibilities for SOMO.

Sylvania Township Trustees have approved a contract with Schoen Inc., a drainage improvement project this year along Huntington Road.

Rob Nash, road department superintendent, told trustees that Schoen was the lowest and best bid for the project. He added that the township had received 11 bids for the project.

The highest bid was $149,808. The Schoen firm’s bid was $109,896.

For the general consumer, when buying a printer, the basic choice is whether to get an inkjet printer or a laser printer.

Inkjet: If you need a printer to just print Janis Weber basic documents, with or without color, a document printer is adequate for the job. The inkjet printer is the least expensive; typically priced under $100.

If you are interested in printing photos up to 8 x 10 in size and need the photos to be high quality, the photo printer is the best option.

Most photo printers can print relatively high resolution photos and can many times look just as good as a photo developed and printed by a professional photo printing business.

Most inkjet printers are relatively small and can fit in tight spaces. All-in-one inkjet printers are a bit larger but are still typically smaller than a laser printer and much smaller than a standard office copy machine.

Inkjet printers, overall, have lower sticker prices than laser printers. When the time comes, they are also cheaper to replace since it is often easier and cheaper to just buy a new printer if it breaks down.

Often ink is half the price of a laser toner cartridge. Replacing ink cartridges in an inkjet printer is quick and easy to do. Inkjet

If your seasonal color ends with those plants, you are missing so much through the summer and fall. Open another door in your gardening experience. End of lecture.

Since it’s spring at long last, we’re going to chat briefly about two things that most folks don’t want to hear about, but they are, as they say, “what it’s all about.” And they are soil and fertilizer.

I heard that! Don’t groan, and we can get this over with, with little, if any, pain and agony. But it will indeed make the difference between success and catastrophe in your garden, so at least give it a bit of your time. At the end of the spring flush of leaves and blooms,

printers geared towards photo printing can produce amazing results but are costly.

When compared to inkjet printers laser printers are much more efficient with their toner. Printing a document with multiple pages takes a bit longer on an inkjet printer than a laser printer. Cleaning an inkjet printer is no easy task, nor is it a clean one. Inkjet cartridges can sometimes leak, and the ink can stain almost anything it comes in contact with, including clothes and hands. The most important consideration is the liquid ink will dry up, wasting money.

Overall, inkjet printers are the most common choice for consumers. When visiting an electronics store, it is common to see a larger selection of inkjet printers than laser printers. Nowadays, consumers look for good quality printing at the lowest initial cost and inkjet printers fits that criteria.

Hewlett Packard, Canon, and Epson have proven to be reliable brands with models that fit the needs of most consumers.

Laser Printer

If you only need to print documents, like a Word document, Excel spreadsheet, or a web page, the basic laser printer is a good option. Laser printers at the lower end of the price scale are just black and white. There are color laser printers as well, but they have a higher price tag, often several times higher. If you are looking to be able to make copies of documents, scan a document to a computer, and print documents, the all-in-one laser printer is a good choice. As with the basic laser printer, the majority of all-in-one versions are black and white. Laser color print-

plants are tired. It’s like running the Glass City Marathon and stopping afterward at Café Marie for breakfast. Plants begin their summer growth immediately after spring flush, so a light fertilizing can make six sets of new leaves instead of two.

Remember it this way. A bag of 20-10-5 fertilizer has 20 percent nitrogen (for greening and top growth), 10 percent phosphorus (for flowers and strong roots), and 5 percent potassium (for overall growth and vigor). So, a rose food has a higher second number, and an evergreen food has a higher first number. That’s more than many people know, so you are now in the ‘gardening one-percent’. I always advise folks to get an all-purpose fertilizer, like 10-1010 or so. As Bugs Bunny used to say, “That’s enough of that.”

Our Sylvania soil is generally sandy (this was once the shore of Lake Erie), unless your development was originally a farm. Then it is likely that your soil is the compacted hardpan clay under the plowed field. Maumee and Perrysburg are similarly clay, by and large, once being the lake bottom. Sandy soil drains quickly, leaving plants thirsty often. Clay holds nutrients better, but often does not drain at all.

In either case, every time you plant anything, anywhere in your yard, add peat moss,

A laser printer is efficient on toner use, compared to inkjet printer usage of ink. Cost per page can be considerably less, which means a total lower cost of ownership over the life of the printer. A laser printer can print documents quite fast, especially larger documents, when compared to an inkjet printer. Powder toner does not stain like ink and cleaning a laser printer is not as messy as an inkjet printer. It does not dry up!

Printed documents, with or without color, look very sharp, usually more than the same documents printed on an inkjet printer. The toner cartridge costs more but will last for years. While laser printers have gotten smaller in size over the years, they are still typically a bit bulkier than an inkjet printer and don’t fit into the tight spaces as easily, if at all, and are not known for their quiet operation. They are known to be louder when in use and can sometimes be a disruption.

Overall, laser printers are excellent for document printing, as well as copying and scanning. When it comes to long-term cost of ownership, they have the inkjet printers beat.

For basic home use, they may not be the printer of choice, but for the home office setting or even business setting, they can be a great choice and are often the choice made.

If the printing and copying is just black and white, it may be worthwhile to go with a laser all-in-one printer. If color is necessary, the inkjet all-in-one printer is probably a better option.

composted manure, or something significantly organic to the soil, at a ratio of one-to-one with the existing soil. It will make the Sylvania sand drain slower, hold more moisture, hold more nutrients, allow for stronger root growth, and an overall healthier plant.

With clay soil it loosens the soil, allows it to drain and not turn to concrete in summer, and allows the roots more freedom to grow. Never, never, never (never) mix sand with any kind of soil. It gets heavier, not lighter, like swimming in molasses. Visual enough? If you want the beautiful, black, rich soil of Old Orchard or the Old West End, this is how you get it, after just a few years.

So, before you go out to buy those impatiens and geraniums (not until the last frost date of May 15, certainly), add to your shopping list a small bag of general purpose fertilizer (if you lived near the ocean, you would want ‘general porpoise fertilizer’, of course), some composted manure or peat moss to mix in as you plant, and treat yourself to a new, bright-colored kneeling pad while you’re at it.

You gotta work a bit to get a garden in order.

There soitenly ain’t no free rides in the garden (ala Curly Howard). But the payoff will be soooooooooo visible. Happy Spring, at last!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Your month did not begin with a whimper, it began with a bang, especially where finances and your own personal well being are concerned. With two major planetary influences now in retrograde, specifically Mercury in your own sign, you would do well to lay low. Perception really does make a difference. Therefore, reel it in, bask in the sunlight if you will. Also a great period for NOT asking for a raise, or that promotion you have been panting for. However, after May 29, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re free to wander. Although, as with anything else, do not go overboard.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

There seems to be a small voice inside of you needing to pick everything apart, including yourself. With both Mercury, your ruler, and Mars in retrograde you may feel overwhelmed, to say the least. Not to worry, as with everything else, this too shall pass.

However, you would do well to not make any major changes, such as home or work. In fact, stay focused until after July 1, 2016.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You are more than ready to push and face the limits if only you knew where to start.

This month opens way to Mars and Mercury now in a retrograde motion. Clarity of speech, speaking your mind without going over board, is the key. Also, be totally aware of money matters by lifting the veil and seeing what is in front of you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Now that Mercury is retrograding in your area of partners, and Mars is transiting your money house, you would do well but be cautious where finances and partnerships are concerned, especially wherever you sign on the dotted line.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 20)

As Mercury travels through your area of home you may feel a need to push the limits where family is concerned. More importantly, it may be time to set aside your propensity for analysis and listen for a change. Also, Mars traveling through your area of friendships may cause you to react differently than you normally do. Take a deep breath, then give way to your feelings without being too blunt.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 19)

With most Pisces, this can be a fruitful time as change merely makes the heart grow fonder. A good time to regain yourself, both financially and spiritually. As both Saturn and Mercury retrograde, your sense to change your own perspective is well indicated, specifically on the home front.

Read Backus, DDS

Dr. Read Backus, 81, of Sylvania, Ohio, died while playing baseball with the Sylvania Great Black Swamp Frogs! (Not really, but that was his introduction, so his family decided to keep it.)

He lost a competitive battle with dementia on April 19, 2016, with his wife Dorie by his side.

Dr. Backus graduated from Muskingum College and St. Louis University School of Dentistry in 1960; he entered the residency program at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. Following his residency he served in the US Army Dental Corps from 1961-1963. He moved his family to Toledo to join his uncle’s dental practice in the old Toledo Hospital Doctor’s building. Read moved his practice to Sylvania (Southbrier Center), where it remained for 42 years before he retired in 2008. He and Dorie enjoyed dozens of cruises many with his son, David, and daughter-in-law, Amy. Read was a Sylvania City Councilmember for 37 years and was joined on council by his daughter, Barbara, for ten of them. He helped lead and guide the city during its greatest development and prosperity period. Read had a passion for the community’s safety services and served as Safety Committee Chairman for 27 years.

Active in Boy Scouts of America for 50 years – starting in birthplace of Glassport, Pa. – Read earned his Eagle Scout, Wood Badge, and Silver Beaver. Boating was family passion, it was considered competitive sport to see how quickly we could move from parked car to lines dropped and pushed away from the dock. A quick weekend or a 30-day trip, the boat was family time. His love for boating lead him to Toledo Power Squadron, for over 30 years his service included time as the Toledo Commander, District Commander and Stf. Commander of a National Committee for the United States Power Squadron.

Joining McCord Road Christian Church in 1966, the year after its founding (would have joined the first year - if they had a church softball team!) he served as Deacon, Elder and Treasurer. He was very passionate about serving the community and being actively engaged. His active involvement ranged from Sylvania Rotary, American Legion Post 335, Sylvania Community Services, SCAT, Toledo Zoo and a host of wonderful community organizations. He was a member of the Barton Smith Lodge F. & A.M. and was a 32degree Mason.

One of the many opportunities he and Dorie had was to represent Sylvania at the Decommissioning of the USS Sylvania where they were presented with the ships bell for the City of Sylvania. A train collector all of his

life, the city dedicated the Historical Train Barn in his name. As one of the original partners in Tam O’ Shanter in 1972 he enjoyed bringing hockey to the community.

Read lived an active and intentional life.

An avid sportsman, playing baseball, softball, tennis, hockey, basketball, and bowling, Read loved boating, fishing, was an excellent pistol marksman, and pilot. But mostly he was a loving husband to his wife, Dorie, of 59 years; father of David Read Backus DDS (Amy) and Barbara Read Backus Sears; and grandfather of Hunter Read Sears, Benjamin Read Sears (Gina) and Andrew Earl Backus who will miss him dearly.

Lucille I. Cannon Laskey

Lucille I. Cannon Laskey, age 98, of Township, Sylvania passed away Tuesday April 12, 2016 at The Grove at Oakleaf.

Lucille Cannon was born Jan. 9, 1918, in Henry County, Ohio.

She was the daughter of Charles B Sr. and Gladys J. (Joy) Cannon. In 1923 her parents came to Toledo, leaving behind their farm life, and starting a new life “in the big city,” then later moving to Maumee and Adams Township. Lucille graduated from Maumee High School in 1936 and attended Tri-State University. She married Roland W. Laskey June 13, 1942. In 1956 she and her husband purchased a home on Dogwood Lane in Sylvania Township. Four years later, at the age of 45 years, her husband died, leaving Lucille a widow with two school age children. After his death Lucille went to work as a life insurance underwriter for Midland Mutual Life Insurance Company.

She was also a member of the Board of Directors and served as Secretary of Graphic Arts Corp. of Ohio from 1964 until 1967. In 1967 she started her long career in Sylvania Township government, first being appointed in May of 1967 to serve on the Sylvania Township Zoning Appeals Board, and by the next year she was appointed the chairman of this board.

In 1969 Lucille filed a petition with the Lucas County Board of Elections to run for the elected position of Sylvania Township Trustee. She ran against five men, and won the election, being the first female to be elected to the position of Sylvania Township Trustee in its 134-year history. She took office on 1-1-1970. At this time, she was a member of, and remained a member of the Sylvania Republican Club, the Federation of Republican Women and the Sylvania Area Community Improvement Corporation.

SYLVANIA ADVANTAGE | FIRST MAY 2016 | 13B One of Lucille’s first appointments as a trustee was to represent the township on the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments and she continued in that position from 1970 through December of 1997; serving on the General Assembly Committee; Intergovernmental Relations Committee; Executive Committee starting in 1972, and serving as chairman to the finance committee for six years also.

In March of 1970, just three months after being elected to the position of Sylvania Township Trustee, she was appointed the chairman of the trustees, and served in that capacity many times. At the time she took office the township officials were considering contracting with the Lucas County Sheriff for police protection in Sylvania Township.

Lucille was against that move, and felt the township was big enough and needed its own police department and police protection. She spearheaded a complete re-organization of the department and announced to the public that they would be hiring ten new full-time officers, and a full-time police chief. By November of 1970 a three mill special levy was approved by the voters of the township to support the idea of an excellent police force. By April of 1971 the Sylvania Township Police force was 16 strong and growing.

Another project that Lucille took on in her first year in office was establishing a zoning office, with the hiring of a full-time zoning inspector. One of the first things she requested he tackle was the huge amount of abandoned cars in the township. By November of 1970 the zoning inspector announced that 215 disabled vehicles had been removed from township properties. Also in the first three years she worked to update the township zoning codes. By the 1980s Sylvania Township was booming with development.

At times it was hard to keep up, but in the end Lucille’s number one concern was good zoning regulations, orderly development and excellent code enforcements.

Another problem that Lucille tackled in her first year in office was our first leaf pickup for residents of the township. In September of 1970 a new law went into effect banning the burning of leaves. They established a program for picking up leaves that same year, which was a huge responsibility.

With the purchase of trucks and leaf loaders the program started for the first time in the township.

Lucille was also a big supporter of the Sylvania Township Fire Department. She worked many hours in support of their levies and continued growth in order to keep up with the ever increasing fire calls and expanding rescue calls as the city and township population exploded. She was also very instrumental in establishing a full-time fire department by first hiring David Drake as the assistant fire chief to eventually move into the position of fire chief once the current longtime chief retired. She gave him the job of establishing a first-rate full-time department. She didn’t stop there, she then worked to establish Sylvania’s first paramedic unit, and in fact attended every early meeting of the Regional Emergency Medical Service of Northwest Ohio board when these paramedic units were first being established in Lucas County.

Lucille served as township trustee starting

in 1970 and was re-elected every four years thereafter, with her November of 1993 win being her seventh term in office. She retired on 12-31-1997 after 28 years. During this entire time the growth in the township was tremendous. In 1970, when she took office, the census count was 16,410 people living in the township, and by the time she retired they were serving over 25,000 residents. Over her span of time as trustee the township budget went from 504,500 in 1970 to $13.2 million in 1997.

In November of 1972 Lucille Laskey attempted a run for the position of Lucas County Commissioner, but lost that election.

She was the first female in its history to run for the office of Lucas County Commissioner. She ran again for the position of county commissioner in 1982, this time against Ray Kest, and opened her campaign by criticizing his support in increasing the county’s piggyback tax. She again lost that race, once again to the Democrat.

Lucille was a member, for many years, of the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce, and over her 28 years as a Sylvania Township Trustee she attended hundreds of ribbon cutting ceremonies when new businesses were holding their grand openings.

During Lucille’s campaign talks she always promised that she would “pinch every penny until it bent,” and the employees of the township can testify that she did just that. Her involvement with various organizations while serving as Sylvania Township Trustee was so numerous that it would take a book to include everything, but here are a few of the most important: •Member of the Ohio Association of Township Trustees and Clerks.

•Member of the Sylvania Area Community Improvement Corporation.

•Member of Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce.

•Served continuously on the Advisory Board of the Toledo-Lucas County Board of Health from 1974 thru 1997, serving as president in 1975 & 1976.

•Member of the Northwest Ohio Conference of Trustees and Clerks and elected to serve as Secretary-Treasurer in 1976.

•Sylvania Township representative to the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments; General Assembly; Executive Committee; Intergovernmental Relations Committee.

•Lucas County Township’s representative to the Toledo Area Land Use Committee’s Urban Area Technical Advisory Transportation Committee.

•Member of the Sister City Commission.

In March of 1998 Sylvania City Council and Mayor Craig Stough presented a framed resolution in honor of Lucille Laskey’s many years of dedication and service she gave the Sylvania Community.

Lucille is survived by her children Phyllis Cowan and Stephen (Terese) Laskey; 4 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother Roscoe Cannon. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and brothers Lester and Charles Cannon. by Michelle M. Nau at the Reppert School of Auctioneering of Indianapolis, Ind. on April 24, 2016. Michelle has been employed with Pamela Rose Auction Co. LLC since 2013 and is currently the director of marketing for property auctions and specializes in online real estate and property auctions.

Founded in 1921, the Reppert School of Auctioneering is an intensive program covering all phases of the auction business. The pro-

gram includes courses in License Law, Legal Matters and Contracts as well as auction technologies and on-line auction techniques.

Reppert faculty members are among the nation’s most well-known and respected auctioneers, attorneys, and college professors.

According to Pamela Rose, owner of Pamela Rose Auctioneers, “We are looking forward to adding Michelle as an auctioneer on our team.

Over the last few years, Michelle has become an invaluable resource in helping us promote and market our auctions. Adding her as an additional auctioneer allows us to expand our live and on-line auction services throughout the Toledo and southern Michigan areas.”

Michelle is a 2014 graduate from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor of science degree in visual communications technology, and a minor in marketing. She was introduced to the auction industry when selling livestock projects through the 4H and FFA Programs at the Clark County Fair.
