SYDNEY UNI SPORT & FITNESS 2009 ANNUAL REPORT | 1

PRESIDENT’S REPORT The year 2009 saw an important milestone reached, as it was the 20th year in which we awarded sporting scholarships. In 1990 just two scholarships were awarded; one female and one male. This has grown to over 300. The increasing focus on providing opportunities for talented sports people to simultaneously develop their athletic and academic potential has fundamentally transformed what is now SUSF. The decision to establish the scholarships program was the foundation for the renaissance of sport at the University, but by themselves scholarships would have achieved little. Some of the other actions and decisions over the past 2 decades which have been critical to the development of our sports include: • Solid financial performances from our operational units; • Very generous financial assistance & support from our parent body, the University, since the introduction of VSU;

• Provision of support services which led to the establishment of the Athlete Services Department; • Appointment of full-time strength & conditioning coaches; • Appointment of full-time coaches for our major sports; • Appointment of administrative staff for major sports and increased provision of administrative services and support for smaller clubs; and the • Appointment of full-time Directors for Rugby, Cricket, Soccer, Australian Football and part-time for Hockey. The net effect of this investment in people has been to facilitate the transformation of SUSF from a traditional student sporting body into a development organisation where the focus is on continually improving performance and providing opportunities. Each year we move closer to really sustainable success. But there is one area of considerable concern. The University has been extremely helpful in upgrading and refurbishing our facilities but we continue to fall behind in relative terms in basic sporting infrastructure. We urgently need new and expanded premises to cater for our ever growing sporting demands. One of our most pressing needs is for a rectangular football field.

The global financial crisis has restricted the capacity of the University to assist us but the situation is becoming critical. In the meantime we continue moving ahead by focussing on things we can control. Finally I would like to pay tribute to Rob Smithies and his staff who have worked assiduously to achieve an outstanding financial performance in a very difficult competitive environment. I also thank three people whose support and encouragement have been of immense assistance to us – Bob Kotic, Deborrah Lambourne and John McCarthy QC. Bruce Ross President

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT 2009 was a fantastic year for Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness. Within an organisation of this size and scope, there are many groups and individuals to thank for our success and I would like to begin this report by thanking all of the wonderful SUSF staff who worked so hard during 2009 to deliver yet another bumper year in the face of the global financial crisis and several other challenges to the organisation.

At the beginning of the year, there was widespread concern that a major downturn in the economy, combined with a competitive threat to our facility revenue, would have a considerable impact on our ability to deliver on our financial targets and to deliver services to our clubs and athletes. Our staff worked incredibly hard to meet, and in many cases exceed, budgetary targets, enabling us to deliver a surplus in a tough operating environment. I extend my personal thanks to all SUSF staff and particularly the management team who worked tirelessly to produce outstanding results in difficult conditions. Our facilities are looking as good as they ever have. Dave Shaw and his team have been able to work together with the University to enable us to undertake some much needed renovations and refurbishments to our grounds and buildings, including installation of individual seating in the grandstand, a major refurbishment to our pool infrastructure involving the replacement of almost all the glass in the pool hall together with an overhaul of the pool plant, and the installation of an evacuation system.

4 | SYDNEY UNI&SPORT & FITNESS 2009 ANNUAL SYDNEY UNI SPORT FITNESS 2009 ANNUAL REPORTREPORT

Part of the reason that we were able to make such headway in our revenue this year was the quality of the facilities – all in all, they are looking sharp. The huge increases in attendance are particularly welcome as we strive to engage further with the University community and as more staff and students look to us as their sport and fitness provider. One of the other major drivers of our success in 2009 was our improved marketing and fundraising. Ross Xenos and Rod Tubbs (together with their staff) spearheaded these two aspects of the business and did so with wonderful outcomes. The continued success and improvement of the ROAR magazines, combined with a series of high quality marketing initiatives saw our members being better informed and receiving better customer service – the results of this have been obvious. Our Blue & Gold fundraising functions continued

who contributed to our overall success. It seems that every club has at least one person who is willing to step up and take on responsibilities that others shun or even criticise. The leadership displayed by so many of our volunteers is in itself an inspiration for everyone involved at SUSF to strive harder for even greater success. It is almost criminal to single out some volunteers, and thereby exclude others, but certain individuals deserve to be mentioned. David Mortimer (Football), Mick O’Sullivan (Cricket), Chris Noel (Boat), Jane Spring (Rowing), Jason McLennan (AFL), John Murray (Soccer), and Greg Turner (Men’s Water Polo) have all put countless hours of work into their respective clubs. It is not by mistake that these clubs have achieved significant success – it is through the hard work and tireless commitment of these individuals (and many others) that we are able to produce the results that make us the

including Vice-Chancellor Michael Spence, Bob Kotic, Deborrah Lambourne, Paul Slater, John McCarthy QC, Phil Sorbello, Tony Cox, Ingrid Bascur, Richard Fisher, Olivia Perks and Richard North. Without your assistance we would be a mere shadow of what we are – thank you. The 2009 Management Committee was once again a great source of support, guidance and wisdom for the SUSF Executive, and I would like to extend my thanks to President Bruce Ross and the rest of the Committee for their input and initiative during 2009. The Senate Sports Liaison Committee was also a big help in providing a conduit between SUSF and the University Senate and providing feedback on a variety of issues – my thanks to John McCarthy QC and the Committee for their support and counsel.

SUSF WAS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL AGAIN IN 2009, CONTINUING A LONG TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE AND COMMITMENT TO COMBINING STUDY AND SPORT AT ALL LEVELS OF THE SPORTING LANDSCAPE. their tradition of witty, searing humour and great atmosphere to raise many valuable dollars for our clubs program. The addition of potentially two further Blue & Gold lunches in 2010 on the back of the very successful water sports lunch in 2009 highlights the strength of the concept. The elite athlete program and our strength and conditioning program underpin so much of what it means to be a student athlete at this university. Martin Harland and his team have done a wonderful job of making sure our athletes are in great condition and can perform at their best when called upon. The elite athlete program continues to provide our scholarship and T.A.P. holders with significant support to maintain their study load whilst competing at the elite level and my thanks go to Ian Evans and his staff for another solid performance. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of SUSF – without them our clubs would not exist and so much of what we do would lack passion and drive. In 2009 our clubs again achieved a great deal on and off the field/court etc. The detailed club reports contained later in this Annual Report sets out their successes - thanks to everyone

leading sports university in Australia. My sincere thanks to each of these people and to the dozens of others that have contributed so much to our clubs program over so many years. For the second year in a row we were able to deliver a surplus, which was remarkable given the downturn in the economy. This is attributable to a number of factors, including the work done by Tony Jackson, our finance manager, and his staff in making sure our finances were on a solid footing. In addition, I specifically want to thank the members of our new business development team that met for the first time in 2009 – Dave Shaw, Tony Jackson, Ross Xenos, Paul Gray and Paul Reynolds - for all of their dedication to a new concept for SUSF, and one that proved to be highly effective. Our support from the University was once again greatly appreciated – the financial support in particular, is what keeps us in business and without it we would struggle to deliver the programs we do. I would also like to place on the record my thanks to the many people within the University who have helped us in so many ways during 2009,

There were a number of staff initiatives that were undertaken within SUSF during 2009 that were very well received. Our staff social committee put on numerous excellent functions and the staff games that were very well received – thanks to all who helped, particularly Anthony Ellison. Almost all of our staff participated in something, and our decrease in staff turnover is at least partly attributable to the heightened sense of camaraderie and fun within the organisation. SUSF was highly successful again in 2009, continuing a long tradition of excellence and commitment to combining study and sport at all levels of the sporting landscape. I am proud to be leading an organisation with such wonderful staff, volunteers, coaches, and athletes and I look forward to a prosperous and dynamic 2010. Finally I would like to thank my wife, Tasha, for all of her support and wisdom. God bless. Rob Smithies Executive Director

2009 saw a major restructure of the Sport & Recreation department resulting in the launch of the Programs & Participation (P&P) department and the new role of Programs & Participation Manager late in the year.

Leading into 2010, the P&P department is firmly established with the mission of facilitating the optimal participation of the University and its local community in sport, recreation and education through providing engaging, safe and professional programs. Total figures of participation of several programs exceeded that of 2009 budgeted and 2008 actual figures, indicating a successful year of growth. This growth is attributed to the commendable effort of the department’s program managers/ coordinators, in addition to increased support and awareness of the programs across the organisation. During the year, the department also embarked on a new project; providing support to the recently established Social Inclusion Unit of The University of Sydney. For a department which is fundamental in providing avenues to enrich the university experience for all involved, contributing to such valuable programs was just a natural progression.

the participation of their team ‘The Contenders’ in the evening mixed netball competition hosted at the Sports & Aquatic Centre.

Intercollegiate Sport 2009 was an outstanding year of intercollegiate sport, both on and off the field. Successful foundations were laid early in the piece with a comprehensive meet, greet and handover from the 2008 to the 2009 Council and Committee during November STUVAC 2008. Having been provided the proposed 2009 calendar and budget alongside all relevant paperwork prior to exams, Committee members were able to commence their duties in a proactive capacity immediately.

Funding allocated to the Affiliated Campuses was well-utilised in 2009 with representatives from MedSoc, SUDUA and the Conservatorium Students Association accessing their grants to facilitate sport and recreation activities for their respective students.

During O-Week 2009, Hamish King, senior student of St. Paul’s College, orchestrated a brilliant ‘Intercol’ welcome at St. Andrew’s College to the 2009 fresher contingent, featuring an address from the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Michael Spence. This formal, united introduction of heads of college, Council and Committee, SUSF, senior students and other leaders within the college community ensured that a sense of ‘working together’ was established. What then followed throughout the year were intercollegiate sport events that will be remembered for the tremendous performances of the athletes and teams and the fun that was had by all involved.

Sport and recreation activities that were conducted by MedSoc and SUDUA included the annual Tri Faculty Rugby tournament in semester two while the Conservatorium Students Association used their allotment to subsidise

To cap off an exceptional year, the first intercollegiate sports dinner in recent history was coordinated by the Committee and hosted by St. John’s College. This event was an appropriate conclusion to a great year of intercollegiate sport. Formally

recognising the achievements of winning Rawson and Rosebowl teams, as well as awarding the intercollegiate convenor, the sportswoman and sportsman of the year dinner, was a rewarding celebration for all involved. John Sergeant, Vice Principal of St. Andrew’s College and unofficial archivist for Rawson and Rosebowl sport, provided a wonderful insight into the colourful history of the two competitions. The full collection of trophies, some truly showing their years of character, set against John’s address, brought to attention the significant role of sport in college life and the great, historic tradition that it is.

Much of the success of Rawson and Rosebowl events this year is owed to the hard work and commitment of the Committee and Council as well as each college’s senior student and sports secretaries. Their remarkable leadership translated into a distinct improvement in event operation and spectator behaviour. The Committee, in particular, played a much more hands-on role in event operation this year. Leading up to events, the ideas and views of the three major groups – heads of college, college students clubs and SUSF – were brought together in a cohesive fashion by the intercollegiate Council and Committee.

Whilst the 2008 Committee were successful in updating the sporting by-laws of the Constitution, the 2009 Committee and Council worked on expanding and confirming the role of the Council as well as amending thorny clauses in the Constitution such as tribunal procedures and powers to act. Paul’s retained the Rawson Cup for 2009 while Andrew’s took away the Rosebowl. The overall point scores for the year’s events are as follows:

University Programs

2009 Enrolments

Total numbers of participants in the University Programs (Short Courses, Interfaculty Sport and Lunchtime Social Sport) showed encouraging growth in 2009. Short Courses Total enrolments in the Short Courses exceeded that of budget by 40 and that of 2008 numbers by 43 with 594 enrolments overall. Interestingly, the ratio of non-member to member enrolments increased with 294 non-members to 300 members, providing a healthy revenue boost, but more importantly indicating that promotional strategies to encourage greater participation of University staff and the local community were successful.

Interfaculty Sport Interfaculty Sport for 2009 has proved to have had one of its most successful years. The overall participation numbers reached an outstanding 1225 athletes in over sixteen sports, throughout eleven faculties. This is compared to 2008 where the total number of participants was 893 and 942 in 2007. 2009 had no events cancelled due to weather or insufficient competition entries; however the Male Outdoor Soccer in Semester 1 was changed to Indoor Soccer due to rain.

The Faculty of Health Sciences was victorious for the first time ever within the Interfaculty Program and proved to be a team not to be reckoned with from the very beginning. Health Sciences showed continuous skill and determination throughout the whole year and Leith Robertson, Sports Representative of Health Sciences, should be mentioned for his continuous hard work and dedication to the program. Education came in 2nd, closely followed by only 2 points was Law, and Medicine and Pharmacy finished in equal 4th position. A mention must go to all the other faculties who participated within the 2009 Interfaculty Sports program, including Agriculture, Architecture, Arts, Commerce, Dentistry, Engineering, Science and Vet Science.

Events held in the first Semester of 2009 generally attracted greater numbers than 2008; however both Netball and Outdoor Soccer ran negative participation numbers. This may be due to change from Outdoor Soccer to Indoor Soccer due to weather, meaning fewer competitors allowed on the field at one time as well as a disruption in the program. Semester 2 showed great improvements in participation numbers over all events, with Table Tennis improving by 116 per cent, Handball increasing participation by 112 per cent and the 5km Run nearly doubled their participation numbers with a massive increase of 174 per cent.

The 2009 budget has also been another element where Interfaculty Sport has proved itself successful. The 2009 budget was set at $5,796.90, however the program only spent $4,367.43, showing a favourable difference of $1,429.47. The Interfaculty budget incorporates the running of events, including equipment hire and referee wages, the administration of the program, promotional costs and the costs of the final presentation.

2009 saw two interns oversee the administration and organization of the Interfaculty program; Antony Butler in Semester 1 and Jessica Salmon in Semester 2. Jessica Salmon will be continuing to manage the program for Semester 1 2010. 16 events have been scheduled for 2010, and the calendar strongly reflects the demands of the Sports Representatives and their athletes. Indicated popular events, such as Indoor Soccer and Outdoor Soccer, Basketball and Touch Football predominately feature within the program and niche events such as Table Tennis, Badminton and Handball also continue within the program due to the significant increase in participation numbers within these events. It is hoped that the Interfaculty Sports program can continue to grow within the Sydney University community as it has proven to do so in 2009. Incorporating popular events within the program, as well as utilising social networks as a promotional tool, should enable the program to replicate its growth as it has done so successfully throughout the last year.

Community Programs School Holiday Camps The School Holiday Sports Camps had outstanding results in 2009, with an increase of 20% on enrolments for the year. A large percentage of these enrolments come from previous participants and childcare organisations. However, it is becoming increasingly common for private schools to disallow our marketing material to be distributed via them, as they are now running their own ‘Holiday Care’ programs.

for their students. This camp had a very positive outcome and guaranteed the return of the Scots College water polo camp in 2010. Overall the quality of staff coaching on the camps was excellent, with returning staff ensuring the programs were well run, challenging and enjoyable. A new relationship was built with Maria Arthur, Sydney Development Manager at Australian Rugby League Development to manage our rugby league camps.

89 camps were offered throughout the year compared to 85 sports camps offered in 2008. Multi-Sports proved to be the most popular camp, with a new one day fencing camp introduced to capitalise on the interest created in the multi-sports camp. A martial arts camp was also introduced. Scots College approached SUSF to conduct a water polo development camp specifically PERIOD

Rebel Sport completed their third 12 month major sponsorship agreement in which they were the exclusive supplier of sporting apparel, goods and equipment to SUSF Camps. Over the three years of this arrangement, Rebel Sport had provided approximately $50,000 ‘in-kind’ and cash sponsorship. Sydney Markets continue their sponsorship of the school

holiday program from autumn, supplying fresh fruit to camp participants as well as promotional material to give away. They are the official snack supplier and have reached an agreement which will see them partner with SUSF Camps for the next two years. The contractual agreement between Camp Australia and SUSF continued in 2009. We continue to work with CA to maximise benefit to both organisations through quality service delivery of all our camps. Support for disadvantaged community groups such as the Boys and Girls Brigade and NASCA were continued through free camp placements in camp periods and sports programs on campus in 2009.

In comparison to the 2008 figures the number of schools participating in the program significantly dropped. The number of students taking part in the program in 2009 decreased from 810 in 2008 to 430 in 2009.

Education Programs 2009 was a mixed year with plenty of new changes with the appointment of a new Education Programs Officer. The PDHPE program had a positive performance bringing in a record 25 new schools to the PDHPE program with a total of 1096 students participating in total.

The overall success of the Sports Medicine Awareness and Taping courses showed similar results to 2008 although there were no bookings at all in term 3, term 4 proved to be popular with 2 schools starting their option for year 12 earlier.

Although the PDHPE programs overall success was slightly below budget and performance compared to 2008 results, the new adjustments to the syllabus can only bring improvement with a new start in 2010.

colleges and the general community. A strong relationship with the health science faculty at Cumberland continues to develop with our CPR courses consistently growing and hopefully will continue in 2010.

The year 11 & 12 modules continue to improve with the purchase of new equipment to help enhance the delivery and content of modules. Terms 2 & 3 were the busiest time of the year and as such the employment of a casual staff member to help with the delivery of classes was approved towards the end of the 3rd quarter, in order to train and prepare for 2010. The NSW Department of Education and Training is bringing in changes to the PDHPE syllabus for 2010, and all modules have been altered to cater for the needs and requirements of students and teachers. These new changes are exciting, combining new and existing content with new equipment and activities.

A positive transition in relationships between SUSF and Cynergex Group (our partner for the delivery of accredited first aid courses) continue to develop and they have helped tremendously with the training and transition of the success of our first aid courses for 2009.

First Aid performance compared to 2008 fell short but this can be attributed to the large amount of courses completed in 2007 and 2008. With new marketing ideas and methods having been planned and introduced towards the later stages of 2009 (and certifications expiring of 2007 enrollees) 2010 should be a good year for the first aid program.

SUSF’s relationship with the Education and Social Work Faculty continues to develop with their referral and promotion of our first aid programs to their students. This has proven to be quite effective with the Masters of Education program being the highest contributor from the Education and Social Work faculty enrolments. Our relationship with Macquarie hospital unfortunately was lost this year with their decision to go for in house training instead of out sourcing to SUSF, which was disappointing and only 3 courses were held compared to 6 courses in 2008.

Program quality, delivery and teaching environment has always been an important aspect in our program and this year the Health Works room was revamped with new paint, a new layout and more effective storage to go along with the new equipment purchased (4 new mannequins and 1 monark bike) to enhance the delivery and content of both the first aid and PDHPE programs.

OPERATIONS & FACILITIES REPORT 2009 was a stellar year for Operations and Facilities. A large number of capital works were completed or commenced across almost all of our facilities. We set new records for member entries, income and profitability and reduced staff turnover significantly.

Capital Works In the first quarter we completed the major works on the Sports and Aquatic Centre’s windows and roof. These works dramatically increased the amount of natural light into the pool area and this has been very well received by swimmers. During the year, we installed a new smoke detection and evacuation system. This has improved the safety of staff working in and members using this facility. We also replaced the main pool plant, introducing a new, smaller boiler, a more efficient heat exchanger and a new primary pump. This should improve the efficiency and reduce the costs involved in heating and circulating the pool water. At the Grandstand we installed new individual seating on the top floor for spectators. We extended the reach of the SUSF banner over the Grandstand balcony to keep the rain off spectators. We also added the ability for the balcony to be enclosed during cold or inclement weather, increasing the function capacity of the Grandstand Bar. In the second half of the year we commenced work on a tender to replace all our Arena and SUSAC cardio gear,

came in at a loss of just ~$125K. This is 47% ahead of budget. Our other small centres, the Boatsheds, the Grandstand Bar and the Robyn Webster Sports Centre all returned small profits.

our SUSAC strength gear and some of our Arena strength gear. This was a lengthy process that ultimately resulted in a large order being placed with True Fitness and a smaller order with Life Fitness. We also tendered out for new lockers at the Sports and Aquatic Centre.

All up, for the entire department, total profit for the year was ~$550K vs a budgeted profit of $210K. In other words we finished ~166% ahead of target. A very pleasing result in a difficult financial climate.

In conjunction with the cardio/strength tender, we commenced a major renovation at the Arena to move the reception to the other side of the hall and double the size of the cardio space. Also at the Arena we renovated the Coaches’ Offices to add three more offices and re-organise the hot-desk space. Both of these projects commenced in late 2009.

Gladstone MRM Reporting We use Gladstone MRM.Plus2 software for our membership management and point-of-sale. While doing a great job on reception, we have found its reporting tools to be relatively weak. To remedy this, we developed our own in-house solution to extract data in a form that enabled weekto-week and year-on-year comparisons. For the first time we could look for trends in our facility use and membership profiles. This has considerably improved our ability to understand our business and make appropriate decisions. A couple of sample charts from our in-house system are included below. They illustrate the growth in demand at our facilities and use by our Blue, Bronze, Silver and Gold Lion pass-holders.

The Arena renovations and the installation of the new lockers and the new cardio and strength equipment were completed in time for O-Week 2010. Our service offering to our members has been dramatically improved as a result. Facilities Budget The following summary is based on un-audited financial figures for 2009. (Audited figures appear in the 2009 financial report.) In terms of our budget, profit is dominated by SUSAC (our primary profit centre) and Grounds (our major cost centre). SUSAC had an excellent year financially. It brought in $3.62m against a budget of $3.39m. Expenses essentially met budget, meaning the centre finished with a profit of $1.36m against a budget of $1.15m. This means this centre exceeded its profit target by ~18% and outperformed 2008 by ~15%.

Staff After significant turnover last year, just five staff members departed during 2009. Tegan Miller commenced in January as our part-time Swim School Administrator and finished in December. Cathy Buxton resigned as Arena Customer Service / Reception Staff in April, Renee Payne resigned as Assistant Arena Centre Manager, Amy Guirguis resigned as SUSAC Bookings Coordinator / RWSC Supervisor in June, and Michael Hayes resigned as one of our qualified greenkeepers in July.

Grounds also had an excellent result, managing their costs throughout the year. After finishing about 20% over budget last year, they came in 7% under budget this year. The Arena and HK Ward centres were budgeted to post a loss of ~$233K, but

Dylan McDonald was promoted to Shift Supervisor (primarily at the Arena) and Shannon Townsend joined us full-time as Shift Supervisor (primarily at the Arena), both in July. Tamara Sales joined us as SUSAC Bookings Coordinator / RWSC Supervisor and Adrian Green joined us as 4th year apprentice greenkeeper in August. Our Grounds team was awarded hosting rights for the Third Grade Cricket Final on No. 1 Oval in late March. In addition, we were voted best ground on the day. This is an outstanding effort and Ray Hunt and his team are to be congratulated. Also to be congratulated is John Moloney, our Sports and Aquatic Centre Manager, on reaching 25 years service on October 22. John has led the centre with distinction for several years now, maintains a great rapport with our members and is our resident guru on all matters concerning our pool. We gave John several gifts, including a trophy made from a remnant of our recently replaced boiler which “never missed a beat in 37 years” at a well-attended lunch in his honour. Conclusion My thanks to all the staff at the University who made our capital works program possible. In particular, Phil Sorbello, Martin Ayres, Ingrid Bascur, John Chung and Anthony Cox from CIS. I’d also like to thank David Lavings and Matt Inch from CMS for managing the projects. And finally, I am indebted to all our Operations and Facilities staff for such an outstanding year, in particular, John Moloney, Paul Gray, Paul Reynolds, Ray Hunt and Leon Talay. ELITE ATHLETE PROGRAM REPORT In the wake of Australia’s successful Beijing Olympic campaign, several world-class athletes decided to resume or begin study at Sydney University, including Olympic Gold medallist diver Matthew Mitcham (B.Arts & Science), Olympic silver-medallist Francis Hegarty (M.Commerce) and Olympic rowers Sarah Cook, Sally Kehoe and Sam Loch.

16 | UNI SYDNEY UNI & 2009 FITNESS 2009 ANNUAL SYDNEY SPORT & SPORT FITNESS ANNUAL REPORT REPORT

They were joined by Wallabies Dean Mumm and Luke Burgess, who both resumed their studies with the Economics and Business Faculty. It was in particular a special homecoming for Luke, who had previously studied Radiation Therapy at the University. His decision to leave a rival Sydney club and return to the University in 2009 to play rugby was just as important as his desire for further academic qualifications. There is often a great deal of negativity and speculation about the financial incentives of our scholarship component. However, the opportunity to study at a world-class academic institution such as Sydney Uni, play for increasingly professional sporting clubs and receive assistance from the Elite Athlete Program via high-level administrative support are, in our opinion, the primary reasons why athletes choose to study at the University.

Scholarships The EAP granted sport scholarships to 237 athletes from 33 sports in 2009, with a further 76 places offered in the Talented Athlete Program (TAP) - which once again proved a successful stepping stone for athletes coming from high school who need support to achieve their goals of becoming scholarship recipients. Sprint canoeist Murray Stewart (M. Architecture) and diver Alex Croak (B. Applied Science – Occupational Therapy) received the Vice Chancellor’s Sport Scholarships for academic and sporting excellence. The support of the University has been of utmost importance to our EAP, and once again the University showed just how much they value it by contributing significant funding towards travel for Australian sporting representatives and athlete services. Our sincere thanks to Vice-Chancellor Michael Spence and Prof. Derrick Armstrong for their support - the success of our athletes when they compete on a national and international stage is testament to your support and assistance. The partnership between SUSF and the Faculty of Economics and Business continued to gain momentum, with the successful continuation of the Faculty’s Undergraduate Sports scholarship program to complement the 10 Postgraduate Sports scholarships offered annually. In 2009, Australian rower Sally Kehoe was a worthy Faculty undergraduate recipient, joining fellow recipients James Goswell and Nicholas Purnell (Australian U/23 rowing team). The support of our donors to the EAP was, as always, greatly appreciated in 2009. The list of scholarship recipients is listed in this publication but allow me to express my personal thanks to Rodney Tubbs (Blue & Gold); Cheryl Collins, Ann Mitchell and Mac Chambers (Blues Association); Craig Spence (MBF Health); and donor contributors associated with the Dr Philip Rundle, Marie Gavel, Warrick Segal, Ray Hyslop and Kaye Denning scholarships. Travel Assistance In 2009, the University of Sydney once again provided extra funding to assist more than 60 student-athletes who were selected to represent Australia at national and international events. Our men’s and women’s rowers were the main recipients of international travel funding, with a large percentage of the overall budget going to assist U/23 Australian representatives and Senior A rowers in the lead-up to

the World Cup. Several track athletes, swimmers and water polo representatives also received funding for overseas trips. To all our athletes who represented the University and Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness at the highest level, we appreciate your efforts and thank you for your dedication and remarkable commitment. It is often a very complicated task (and an occasional strain) for lecturers and administrators to organise special arrangements for our athletes whilst they compete overseas or are required to relocate interstate to continue their sporting careers at State-based institutes of sport. For this reason, I would like to extend my thanks to the Student Information Office within the Faculty of Economics and Business for their invaluable help – in particular, Faculty Manager Nigel Smith, Vivienne Schell and staff such as Jennifer Peden and Subashini Naranyan. I would also like to thank staff from the Faculties of Health Sciences (in particular, Scott Avery, Linda Dewar, Rhonda Orr and Kieran Rooney), Education (Shona Smith and Kate Russell) and Law (Dean Gillian Triggs, Peter Finneran and Natasha de Zilva). And a very special thanks to Terry Heath and Kate Collins from the Arts Faculty, for taking the time to meet our athletes and provide advice on their degree structure and progression. Academic Excellence Our athletes often walk a very precarious tight-rope between balancing their studies with their sporting commitments and because of this, we were all particularly pleased to see that the academic average for 2009 was once again higher than the average student mark for both undergraduates and postgraduates enrolled at the University of Sydney. Our student-athletes were enrolled across a broad range of Faculties, such as Arts (71 scholarship students), Economics and Business (60), Health Science (52), Science (28) and Education (23). I would like to acknowledge the efforts of our Academic Counsellor Bruce Ross and the assistance from our tutors, who often meet with our athletes after hours and on weekends, to assist them with catching up on work they may have missed as a result of their sporting commitments. Alison Miles and Paul Penna continued to provide invaluable support in the key areas of nutrition and sports psychology

respectively to our scholarship athletes in sports such as rowing, rugby, cricket and swimming. We thank them for their efforts and look forward to their continual involvement in our program. Recruitment Recruitment continues to be a hallmark of our organisation, and I would like to thank all of our coaches and club representatives for their work in identifying talent and providing our staff with the opportunity to assist them with their entry and transition to the University. The Talent Identification Seminar in August highlighted just how successful our athlete recruitment has become, with approximately 130 students and parents receiving information about the sporting and academic support opportunities available through Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness. Like our Athlete Induction held earlier in February, the seminar proved to be an outstanding success and a great opportunity to promote our organisation, our staff, facilities and the University to the general public. Welcomes & Departures We welcomed Nicholas Halliday to our program as EAP Administrator. Nick commenced work in June and has quickly earned the reputation as an individual who can get results and always provides high levels of enthusiasm. We would like to thank departing coaches Damien Hill, Phil Bourguignon and Nick Ryan for their efforts over the past several years. Nick and Phil, in particular, the program and I owe you a great debt of gratitude for your incredible hard work, professionalism and efforts with the recruitment and retention of our athletes. In addition, I must thank Prof. Peter Wolnizer, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, for his wonderful support over the past decade for all our athletes, many of whom could not have achieved at such a high level without his backing. Finally, I would like to offer special gratitude to our Executive Director Robert Smithies and EAP Coordinator Madelene Rivier, both of whom continue to provide support and guidance to our athletes and our organisation during this extremely successful period of growth for the Elite Athlete Program. MARKETING & MEMBERSHIP REPORT Having strategically rebranded the organisation in 2008, 2009 posed the significant challenge of continuing to grow consumer and market awareness of the new Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness. Resultantly, 2009 saw a significant shift in our marketing strategy towards a consistent, clear and clever use of the new brand in our advertising, promotions and key publications.

2009 also saw a significant shift in the dedication of human resources to our marketing, with a decreased focus on in-house design and collateral creation, substituted for an increased focus on our communications strategies, media exposure and online presence. Shari Wakefield joined SUSF in January, in the restructured role of Publications and Communications Coordinator, successfully and passionately driving these focus areas. My thanks must go to Shari for her endeavour throughout 2009. The reduced in-house design resourcing placed greater reliance upon our marketing, design and print agencies – RGC and Southern Design. Relationships with both long-time friends of SUSF grew further through 2009 and on every occasion SUSF benefitted from not only their high quality but also very cost-effective services.

Membership Various assertive and consistent annual membership and facility fitness pass campaigns, promotions and events were run throughout 2009, all aiming to position SUSF as not only a leader in quality facility and service provision, but also as a dynamic, friendly and enjoyable community to become a part of.

trial pass into a further pass purchase, attributing total campaign revenue to more than $60k.

Having commenced in December 2008, the ‘2010’ promotion, ended on 31 January 2009. The campaign, which offered a 2 month complimentary pass extension to all 12 month fitness pass purchases during the period, saw staggering growth in our January sales particularly. In all, 511 passes were sold, with key performers being Gold and Silver passes at a community price level. 2009 had begun, 300% ahead of 2008.

The return of students in Semester Two saw the introduction of an innovative, limited product to the SUSF offering – the ‘Semester Pass’. Packaged as a four month membership and priced effectively as almost 20% more than a 3 month pass, the campaign successfully grew our on-campus market penetration through July-August. At a higher price point per unit, the campaign generated more pass revenues than in 2008. However, most pleasingly, it also improved our unit pass sales performance with 249 Semester and 159 3 month pass sales in 2009, outperforming the 244 3 month pass sales in 2008.

As always, O’Week 2009 presented a critical opportunity for SUSF to capture the new and returning Uni student and staff markets. Across all sites, the three days of O’Week in 2009 netted SUSF $117,363.17 in membership and pass sales. This is a 76% increase in revenue from the O’Week 2008, where $66,870.01 was taken. A significant portion of this growth can be accountable to the significant growth of pass sales from $22,743.66 in 2008 to $53,003.61 in 2009. This growth of 133% speaks volumes of the quality of the SUSF product, the targeted event promotion and particularly the quality of customer service on show during O’Week. Many thanks must go to Paul Gray for his unwavering support and assistance in the coordination of all facets of this success.

The inaugural Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness EXPO was held on Saturday 18 October at the University Sports & Aquatic Centre. Combining a strong local media campaign, with the support of our sponsors and partners, the aim of the day was to generate community awareness in the programs and services offered by Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness – attempting to further break down the ‘University only’ mindset of our target audience, through the hosting of enjoyable, family-friendly activities as well as ‘sampling’ events including group fitness demos and free facility access. The event, which attracted more than 700 guests, returned significant benefit to our junior sports programs – particularly Swimming and Tennis.

In May, an ‘old favourite’ fitness pass campaign returned, offering 2 weeks of Gold Pass access for only $25. The campaign was targeted at enticing new members to experience all that SUSF has to offer, as well as allowing current members the option to experience the benefits of an upgrade to the highest pass level. More than 450 people capitalised on the offer, itself generating more than $10k in pass revenues. Most pleasingly however, almost 15% of trailers converted their

Website 2009 was a sensational year for our website - susf.com.au. Along with several adjustments made to the appearance and navigational functions, the site was clearly positioned as the cornerstone of all marketing efforts – with all promotional collateral and marketing campaigns driving web visits. In total, susf.com.au received almost 187,000 visits in the calendar year, up more than 25% on 2008.

Roar Magazine ROAR Magazine continued its evolution in 2009, being released three times in February, July and October, totaling more than 10,000 published copies to compliment the online distribution of the magazine. Designed in association with RGC, ROAR innovatively showcased the products, services, programs and benefits of Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness to both the on and off-campus communities, as well as taking a deeper look into the stories and successes of our key clubs and athletes. World Champion rower Bronwen Watson, Test cricketer Stuart Clark and Opal Suzy Batkovic-Brown were the high calibre athletes that graced the respective covers. As in 2008, ROAR gave the opportunity to raise commercial revenues from paid advertising from internal and external stakeholders. Significantly, 2009 saw an increase in this advertising revenue, greatly reducing the net cost per copy of the magazine to almost $1. Many thanks to our ongoing supporters and advertisers including ACUVUE, MBF, The Co-op Bookshop, Sydney Talent, Sub Aquatics, Skins, Guinot, Brasifit and Peak Physique. Media In total, over 900 articles featuring Sydney Uni clubs and athletes were published in 2009, in comparison to less than 200 in 2008. It must be noted, that the measurement processes distinctly improved in 2009, allowing more articles to be captured. Nonetheless, a growth of this size, in addition to the exposure of more than 30 different clubs in 2009 (versus 16 in 2008) supports the internal decision to focus more of our effort on attracting such coverage. BLUE & GOLD CLUB REPORT Despite the GFC, SUSF was able to successfully stage not only all of the regular ‘Blue&Gold’ functions, but for the first time, was also able to host a ‘Blue & Gold’ Water Sports Luncheon. In total 5 sporting luncheons, 1 sporting dinner and a golf day were held in an effort to raise money for the advancement of sport at the University of Sydney. Cricket – The Traditional Opener 2009 saw the 12th consecutive staging of the annual ‘Blue&Gold’ Cricket Luncheon, which took place at Tattersalls, in February. Guests were entertained throughout the afternoon with amusing panels – led by the witty Adam Spencer – including David Miller, Greg Mail and Lisa Sthalekar, and followed by ‘The Two Stuarts’ – SUCC’s Test Cricketer’s Stuart Clark and Stuart MacGill.

20 | UNI SYDNEY UNI & 2009 FITNESS 2009 ANNUAL SYDNEY SPORT & SPORT FITNESS ANNUAL REPORT REPORT

Mike Coward – one of Australia’s most experienced cricket writers and commentators – then moderated a panel of cricket experts including John Benaud, Jim Maxwell and Peter Roebuck. As an added bonus, all luncheon guests took home a copy of ‘The Baggy Green – The Pride, Passion and History of Australia’s Sporting Icon’. AFL – Cheer the Red & the White! ‘Blue&Gold’ guests were entertained with the infectious humour of Irish born comedian, Paul Martell, at the Aussie Rules Luncheon that took place at the Four Seasons Hotel, in April. As always the best moderator in the business, Adam Spencer, questioned a panel including high profile Swans players Jude Bolton, Michael ‘Magic’ O’Laughlin and Rhyce Shaw. Bolton and O’Laughlin returned to this year’s panel by popular demand, unlike Shaw, who was making his first public appearance in Sydney. Nevertheless, he delighted our guests with his tales of his typical upbringing in Collingwood which many thought resembled an episode of the popular TV series ‘Underbelly.’

Soccer Football - The World Game Overlooking No. 1 Oval, the ‘Blue&Gold’ Soccer Dinner was held at the Grandstand Function Centre in June. In what can only be described as an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere, dinner guests were enthralled by the laid back chat between Adam Spencer and his panelists Les Murray, John Aloisi and Mark Bosnich. Rugby Union – ‘A Saintly Sport’ Adam Spencer dissected the remarkable winning streak of Sydney Uni’s 1st XV at the ‘Blue&Gold’ Rugby Luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel, in August. Guests were privy to amazing insider stories from Head Coach Damien Hill, and players Daniel Halangahu and Tom Carter.

The panels consisted of Sydney Uni undergraduates including Jeremy Davie (Water Polo), Matt Jaukovic (Swimming), Sally Kehoe (Rowing), Keesja Gofers (Water Polo) and Matthew Mitcham (Diving). Nick Hudson was also able to give his perspective on being a Sydney Uni graduate and a 2009 World Rowing Championship Silver Medalist. St Michael’s Golf Day The 13th Annual Xmas Hamper Golf Day was held at the picturesque St Michael’s Golf Club at Little Bay in November, as the usual course, the NSW Golf Club, was in preparation for the Australian Open Golf Championship.

And following tradition, the much anticipated ‘Blue&Gold’ debate returned, sporting the topic ‘Super 14 Rugby needs more Australian teams and South Africa should join the Six Nations instead’. The affirmative team consisted of ‘The Gentlemen of Rugby’ – Greg O’Mahoney and Gordon Bray, whilst the negative team consisted of the ‘Low Life Academia’ – Adam Spencer and Hottie van der Stratten (aka Rhys Muldoon). Although the ‘Low Life Academia’ case was mounted on the foundations of wonderful humour and exceptionally clever wit, neither of these attributes impressed the totally bias adjudicator, former ARU President Mr Phil Harry.

23 teams competed for the Chancellor’s Cup, with the team from St. Vincent’s Clinic (Drs Chris Browne, Frank Cheok, Michael Dunn and Martin Sullivan) snatching victory for the first time after eight attempts. 2nd and 3rd place were filled with teams making their 9th and 11th appearances on the green – Garland Hawthorn Brahe and Bullant Sports respectively.

Water Sports – Make a Splash! The repertoire of ‘Blue&Gold’ functions was expanded in September, when the inaugural Water Sports Luncheon was held at The Boathouse on Blackwattle Bay. An intimate gathering of 110 guests were entertained with two panels cleverly moderated by Adam Spencer.

Flames – Dressed to Impress With Adam Spencer unavailable the guests who attended the ‘Blue&Gold’ Flames’ WNBL Luncheon, were delighted with NBL Hall of Fame inductee Steve Carfino, at the Anchorage Room at WatersEdge Restaurant, in December.

For some teams the ‘Best Dressed’ award is a more realistic challenge than the Chancellor’s Cup! The 2009 winner of the ‘sartorial splendor’ prize was The Reed Group in a close contest with the North Sydney Hotel and Southern Design teams.

The 160 guests were not only entertained by the insight into women’s sport from panelists – Natalie Porter (Flame’s captain), Eva Afeaki and Catherine Cox (Australian Netball Representative), and a second panel of newly acquired Flames including; Suzy Batkovic-Brown, ‘Dee’ Butler and ‘Docky’ Smith, but also by the 2009-2010 Sydney Uni Flames team and the backdrop of Sydney Harbour. The Luncheon was well supported by Flames’ sponsors including ACUVUE, Coca-Cola Amatil, Dick Smith Electronics, Ernst & Young, Guinot Cosmetics, Hornsby Basketball Association, Jebam, Kemp Strang Lawyers, Jennings Plumbing, Manly Basketball Association, Ralph’s Café, Rising Stars Travel, Rydges Camperdown, Sydney City Toyota and Volvo Bus Australia. Thank you to those who supported the ‘Blue&Gold’ events throughout 2009. In particular, thank you to our major sponsors Johnson & Johnson Vison Care – the manufacturers of ACUVUE, the world’s leading brand of disposable contact lenses. We look forward to growing the ‘Blue&Gold’ family in 2010 and expanding the repertoire to include stand alone Water Polo and Rowing Luncheons. Rodney Tubbs Corporate & Alumni Relations Manager

The three Blues Association scholarship holders in 2009 were: • Keesja Gofers - member of the U/20 Australian Water Polo team that won silver at the Global challenge in 2008; • Matt Jaukovic – 50m Short Course Butterfly World Record holder; and • Lara Tamsett - Australian 10k Champion and international cross country runner. All three were selected in the Australian team for the World University Games in Belgrade

in July, but unfortunately Matt fell victim to swine flu and spent the time in hospital instead of competing. We were thrilled to hear that Soccer Blue Astrid Loch-Wilkinson won her right to compete in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, in what turned out to be a rather dangerous bobsleigh competition. Well done Astrid! Blues Association Pin Function Nearly 100 people attended the Pin Function held at The Grandstand, on 7 August, and just over $3,000 was raised to assist with the funding of scholarships in 2010. Contributing to this profit was the raffle, with a large range of substantial prizes organised by Cheryl Collins, and several donations which were forwarded from people who could not attend on the night. It was a very enjoyable night with highlights including the premiere of SUSF’s Elite Athlete Program DVD, as well as some excellent interviews of past Blues by Rod Tubbs.

NEARLY 100 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE PIN FUNCTION HELD IN THE GRANDSTAND, ON 7 AUGUST, AND JUST OVER $3,000 WAS RAISED TO ASSIST WITH THE FUNDING OF SCHOLARSHIPS IN 2010. Blues Association Golf Day The Blues Association Golf Day at St Michael’s Golf Course, on 21 November, saw a boost in numbers which was very pleasing. 64 golfers participated and helped to raise $2,700 for the scholarship fund. However, the Committee is still concerned about the lack of participation in this event from our SU Golf Blues and continues to look at strategies to increase the numbers attending on the day. Blues Dinner The year ended with the traditional Blues Dinner held in the Great hall, on 21 November. Prof. Jillian Trewhella, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), presented the awards in the absence of both the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor. 39 new Blues and 6 new Golds were announced on the night and the winners of the Blue of the Year Awards were Dean Mumm (Rugby) who received the John Sykes Trophy and Sally Kehoe (Rowing) who received the Alison Hattersley Trophy. Guest speaker was Sailing Blue and World Champion Windsurfer Allison Shreeve, who inspired people with her talk of winning against the odds and fighting against the pain barrier in a sport that we hear little about.

In a slight change, and for the first time at the Dinner, Amy Johansen, the University organist, accompanied the St John’s College Choir and those present to sing the traditional songs “Gaudeamus” and “The Varsity” (which was dropped last year but brought back by popular demand). The atmosphere at the dinner was buzzing all night and the raffle raised just on $2,000 to add to our funds for the scholarships in 2010. The Committee I extend my thanks to the members of the Committee in 2009: Jacqui Bonnitcha, Cheryl Collins, Fiona Hammond (who joined us late in the year), Brendon Hyde, Ray Hyslop, Gillian Ting, Rod Tubbs, Mehmet Yagci and Mac Chambers (archivist). We struggled to resolve some issues such as the Young Blues Reunion, membership growth and sponsor packages but we made progress on others. It will be great to see the Gold recipients able to join as members in the future as a result of changes to the Constitution. The remaining issues will continue to be our focus in the coming year, along with gaining access for the disabled to the Grandstand.

I especially want to thank our secretary Cheryl Collins who has done a huge amount of work behind the scenes and helped us to run such successful raffles at our functions. Finally, I take this opportunity to thank Rob Smithies and the staff of SUSF who have worked with us during the past year and supported our ventures. Bronwen Watson organised her first Blues Dinner; Ian Evans and Madelene Rivier helped by keeping us updated on the Blues Association scholarship holders; and Tony Jackson’s finance staff worked with our Treasurer Ray Hyslop to record and manage our accounts properly. It was indeed another great year for SUSF sport-wise and we congratulate Rob and The Management Committee on the successes too numerous to mention. Ann Mitchell President, Blues Association

AFL - Men SUANFC can be very proud of their achievements in 2009, which represented a watershed year for the club. Continuing to be at the forefront of club development on and off the field, the club built on the commencement of the relationship with Collingwood FC in 2008 to establish a successful partnership, translating into further on field success. Introduction of Colts 2009 saw the launch of the Inaugural U18 Colts, with Tim Barling & Will Macbeth guiding the team to an almost-undefeated season, and in doing so winning the U18s Challenge Cup Premiership. The support of the club’s executive, committee, parents, friends and Collingwood made the first year of the Colts a huge success and a lot of fun along the way. Such was the success of the team, the Colts were promoted to the U18s Premier Cup for 2010, where no doubt, further challenges will present themselves. Senior Football SUANFC first grade have built under new coach Roger Moten (returning in 2010) and missed finals by just one game. The Club continues to produce new talent and develop young players with Brydon Coles awarded the Sydney

AFL ‘Phelan Medalist’ (Player of the Year) and Tom Young the NAB Rising Star of 2009. The Club tasted premiership success in the open age divisions, with the Reds taking out the Division 4 Premiership in a similar dominating fashion as the Colts. A huge commendation to Fintan O’Connor and Paul Stanley who worked a large roster to perfection, and will have their own challenges in 2010 with promotion to Division 3. The Reserves and Blues also had terrific years: the Reserves going as far as the Preliminary Final just missing out on back to back Grand Final appearances; and the Blues missing the finals by one spot after being promoted 2 divisions. Launching of Foundation Along with the launch of the Colts, the biggest event for SUANFC in 2009 was the birth of the Australian Rules Division of the Sydney Uni Sport Foundation. 140 past and current players packed the Grandstand on August 21st and set the Foundation off on the right foot with generous donations to the club. Sponsors & Partners SUANFC are proud to have the continued support of long term sponsors, The Forest Lodge Hotel (10 years in 2009), Sydney City Toyota, and Scooteria. The club recognises the philanthropic support of Trust Company and their contribution to scholarships and community football development

projects. A partnership with Allsports Direct has enabled fundraising to reach new levels and the support of player member Dave Owen should be duly mentioned . The club has worked very hard to maintain a level of revenue raising in the face of increasing administrative expenses, with the support of these sponsors and partners vital to the continued development of the club. Committee SUANFC farewells past committee members, and welcomes new additions to the club’s framework, but most notably, SUANFC thanks outgoing President, Jason McLennan for 5 years of outstanding leadership. Jason presided over the club’s promotion to the Premier Division, the creation of the Colts and the launch of the Foundation, and was suitably awarded the Sydney Uni Sport Clubman of the Year Award in 2009. The club is fortunate to have 2009 Vice President, Chas Wilkinson step into the large shoes vacated by Jason for the 2010 season. Jason McLennan President

AFL - Women The 2009 season was the tenth year that the Sydney Uni Women’s Australian Football Club (SUWAFC) was involved in the Sydney Women’s AFL (SWAFL) competition. As usual the team consisted of a number of rookies with significant potential. At the end of the regular season, SUWAFC finished in fifth position missing out on a place in the finals series. Unfortunately injuries did not help the team’s push into finals, however the depth of the squad proved that the girls played as a team and did not rely on individuals. SUWAFC had several player achievements this season:

SUWAFC 2009 Award Recipients: • Best and Fairest – Belinda Michalk • Player’s Player – Kyrsten Winkley • Rookie of the Year – Renee Harrington, Katrina Byrne, and Simone Walsh (tied) • Coaches Award – Libby Sadler • Most Improved – Clare Wells • Golden Boot – Amelia Dever • Club Member of the Year – Alex Roberts A range of players polled in the SWAFL Best and Fairest count, with Emma Yuen finishing in sixth position. At the SWAFL Presentation Night, a ‘Team of the Decade’ was also announced with SUWAFC being represented, both as players and as the team’s coach.

• Meredith Gray became the third person in SUWAFC history to play 100 club games.

Sydney Uni players included in the Team of the Decade:

• Felice Tong played her 50th game for the club.

• Gianna Abbonizio

Kyrsten Winkley and Claire O’Neill were selected for the NSW Blues Team for the Women’s AFL National Championship in Perth. Felice Tong and Clare Wells were selected as NSW Blues team physiotherapists.

• Emma Yuen • Kyrsten Winkley • Melinda Hyland (past player) • Lachlan Worthy (selected as Coach – retired SUWAFC Coach)

Roberts and Liam Hogan (our runner and goal umpire respectively), your constant contribution to the Club does not go unrecognised. The time and commitment you give is greatly appreciated and valued. To the Committee, the Club cannot run without its volunteers so thank you for your behind-the-scenes efforts. To our club administrator Stephen King who has worked with various stakeholders involved with our club, in an attempt to achieve the best outcome and have the club running as smoothly as possible, I thank you for all your efforts. You have been enthusiastic, shown initiative and it is encouraging to know your knowledge of the game has improved. Looking forward into 2010, SUWAFC will enter into its eleventh season in the SWAFL competition. We will continue to develop the club and we will work toward securing another Premiership. Louise Graham President

On behalf of the Club I would like to extend our thanks to all those who supported us in 2009 including The Forest Lodge Hotel, Scooteria, SUSF and SUANFC. Thanks also to our coaching personnel in Kellie Nolan and Penny Stringer without whom we would not have had the skill development and organisation on match day. To Alex

American Football The American Football Club had one of its most successful years on record in 2009. For only the second time in the 26 year history of the sport in NSW, one club, Sydney Uni, won both the Senior and Colts (u18) competitions. In addition, the club had a number of its senior and colts’ players earn representative honours for both NSW and Australia - with three of the four team captains on the Australian outback tour of the United Kingdom being Sydney Uni players. At the senior level, the Sydney Uni Lions continued their record-breaking run by winning a seventh straight NSW championship. The Lions had to pull off a fourth quarter comeback to defeat the UTS Gators in the Waratah Bowl, to claim the title 34-28. The win kept alive a 45 game winning streak for the Lions dating back to 2006 and means that their record over the seven year championship run is an incredible 84 wins and 2 losses.

Twelve Sydney Uni Lions players were selected into the senior national team for its tour of the United Kingdom. Joe Lim, David Thode and James Gifford were chosen as three of the four team captains for the tour, with Joe Lim receiving the award for the Most Valuable Player of the tour. The tour was the most successful by any Australian gridiron team, culminating in a victory over Great Britain. At the Colts level, the Sydney Uni Cubs won the state title by defeating the Bondi Storm 48-44 in a thrilling championship game. The victory capped a season of 10 wins and 2 losses for the Cubs, who were well coached by a number of the players from the senior team, including David Thode, Liam Erby and Kiernan Dorney. Five colts’ players were selected in the NSW team which won the National tournament played on the Gold Coast in June, with Hugh Tomkins, Sam Darcy and Daniel Pearson being named in the junior Australian team which played American Samoa on New Year’s Day. Hugh Tomkins was named the most valuable defensive player of the game and scored Australia’s only points on a kick-off return for a touchdown. The success of the club in 2009 was due in no small part to the work of President, Liam Erby, and his hard-working committee, particularly James Gifford and David Thode.

The continuing success of the Lions is also a tribute to the effort of Head Coach Stephen Dunne and his coaching staff, particularly defensive co-ordinator Ryan Wonser and assistant coach Andrew Ogborne. Stephen Dunne was chosen as the head coach of the NSW Wolfpack to contest the Senior National Championships in April 2010. The American Football Club will continue to aim to represent the University at the highest level of competition in gridiron in the country and to provide the best possible coaching, equipment and administrative support to its players. The Club would like to acknowledge the generous sponsorship of the Camperdown Hotel which, together with the support of Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness, enables to Club to give its players the best opportunity to succeed at American Football. Archery The Archery Club has had a busy year in 2009, representing Sydney University both in local tournaments such as the City of Sydney, SOPA 900, the Metropolitans and the State Indoor Championship, but also nationally, at the 62nd National Archery Championships in Adelaide, and internationally, at the 25th Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia.

Congratulations are due to Robert Talbot who placed 1st in the State Indoor and 10th at the Nationals, and also to Ricci Cheah who came 32nd from 64 entrants in the University Games in Belgrade. The club is looking forward to an exciting new year in 2010, with many new members signing on during O-week, thanks to the talented antics of Jeffrey Chau and Martin Lee (come on Marty-noone can actually pull that 60 pound bow!), including our first kyudoka (Japanese for a practitioner of the Way of the Bow), Samantha Chan. There are monthly social events in the works this year, and also the eagerly awaited arrival of eight new recently purchased bows for the Beginner’s Archery short course, with the aid of Stephen King from SUSF. The arrival of these bows will mark the start of a full upgrade of the club’s equipment and replace bows that have become worn with use over the last few years. Special thanks go out to all the members of the club this year, but especially to Rebecca Martin, Jacky Gawani, and Samuel Taylor who have been indefatigable. We will continue to move forward this year with continued representation at competitive target events and an invigorated social dimension, but above all a joy for the sport (and keeping our eyes on the target)! Athletics 2009 saw the club celebrate its 131st year in existence. It has been a very successful year for the club with athletes competing all over the globe in a variety of events.

In walking events, Jessica Heazlewood finished 3rd in the U/23 Nationals and Derek Mulhearn finished 4th in the U/20 10km Nationals, with younger brother Jordan Mulhearn 2nd in the 5km at the U/18 National Championships.

World Masters Games The club had a small but spirited group of competitors in the World Masters Games. Former national 1500m Champion Holt Hardy won the first Gold Medal of the games in the Men’s 35+ 2km beach run and then backed this up later in the week with a win in the 35+ 800m. Gillian Ragus took home a Gold, Silver and Bronze in the 30+ 4x400, 800m and 400m respectively. In the men’s 40+ High Jump Theo Kavieris won this event with an impressive leap of 1.76m. Former Club Captain Larissa Stanley also took home a couple of medals including gold in the 30+4x400m and a Bronze in the 30+ 1500m. Senior Vice President Jeffrey Phillips brushed off his walking shoes and took home a Bronze in the 5km walk. It wasn’t all about medals for SUAC, just to get out and compete in a great event was worthwhile, typified none more so than by Club President Bobby Broadhurst who finished the Half Marathon well outside his best time, but a finish all the same.

World Uni Games Justin Merlino (110 hurdles), Lachlan Renshaw (800m) and Lara Tamsett (10000m) were scheduled to compete at the World University Games. Unfortunately, Lara succumbed to injury after what looked to be some very encouraging performances in the USA leading into this event. Renshaw finished 5th in the final, agonisingly less than 0.2 seconds behind the winner. Although narrowly missing qualification for the World Championships in Berlin, Lachlan went on to record a personal best time of 1.45.73 for 800m in Germany later in the year. Merlino finished 5th in the final of the 110 hurdles.

State Championships Lachlan Renshaw recorded his 2nd consecutive victory at the NSW Open Championships at 800m. Justin Merlino recorded his third consecutive State Title win. In the Women’s 800m Nikki Molan finished 2nd, to add to her two previous state title wins. In the walks, the club recorded some very impressive results with Jessica Heazlewood and Derek Mulhearn recording Open State Championship wins and backed this up later in the season with a win in the 4x1500m walk at the NSW Relay Championships. Jordan Mulhearn also recorded a win at the NSW

National Championships At Nationals the following SUAC athletes had standout performances: • Justino Merlino recorded his 3rd title • Lara Tamsett won the 10,000m; • Lachlan Renshaw won silver in the 800m; • Nikki Molan finished 5th in the 1500m; and • James Nipperess took silver in the U20 1500m

Long Walk Championships in the U/18’s. Jessica Heazlewood was also named the NSW Female Distance Walker of the year, a very well deserved accolade. In other relay events, the club was as strong as ever winning a number of medals at the NSW Relay Championships and NSW Cross Country Championships, the most dominant being in the Men’s 4x1500m NSW Relay Championships where the team of James Nipperess, Russell Desaix Chin, Brett Halls and Bradley Croker won the event by more than 150m. University Games The Club sent 45 athletes to the Uni Games - its largest team in many years. Much credit must be given to Team Managers Ben Cross and Jessica Heazlewood for putting together such a large team. The club is always in a very healthy state when we have a sizeable University games team. Overall we finished 3rd with Emma Rilen being selected in the Green and Gold team. As the club moves into 2010 we look forward to a massive year with the 2010 Commonwealth Games being the undeniable highlight and focus. Hopefully, we will be able to send a number of athletes to this event and continue on with the impressive results the club has achieved over the last few years. The club committee must be congratulated on a stellar effort this year. They have worked together in a professional and efficient manner producing some excellent results both on and off the track. The Sydney University Athletic Club remains a competitive, well-rounded and pleasurable club for its members. Dean Gleeson Head coach

Badminton 2009 was yet another thriving year for Sydney Uni Badminton as the popularity of the sport increased throughout the student and public community.

This could not be achieved without the promotional materials of the recreational short courses and the first badminton inter-faculty competition. It was wonderful to see an increasing number of members getting motivated to participate in the competitive aspect of the sport, especially in the C grade interclub competition across Sydney. To help prepare the teams for this competition and reach their individual goals, Sydney Uni Badminton provided free coaching for its members. A team of veterans were very successful, fighting all the way into the semi finals where they lost in a close match against young uprising state players. It is certain this will provide a successful platform for the years to come for our teams.

Despite the loss, our athletes displayed great sportsmanship and were proud with the silver. Individual results were also achieved, with Raymond Tam and Tina Chow being awarded with selection in the Green and Gold team. There was plenty to celebrate, as it was the first time both teams were rewarded with a medal. With such impressive achievements in 2009, and an influx of many new members, 2010 is shaping up to be an exceptional year. I wish Sydney Uni Badminton Club all the best for 2010, and the many years to come. Tina Chow President

At the Australian University Games, both teams came in as a contender for a medal. Following an intense week, both teams made it through to the finals against eventual winners, Melbourne University. After several set points and close matches, Sydney Uni fell and lost the tie 3-2.

Baseball As in the past, the club entered three grades in the Sydney Winter Baseball League – Sydney’s strongest winter baseball competition. However, the club had such a great turnout at trials (the largest attendance in recent history), that it was also able to enter a fourth team in the Pacific Coast Baseball League A-Grade. Overall, 2009 proved to be relatively successful, especially given that it was the first year of new Club Coach Barry Hoare. In the Sydney Winter Baseball League, both 1st and 3rd grade made it through to the semi finals. And we finished 4th overall in the Club Championship, which is a very promising result. Congratulations to scholarship holder Jonathan Freeston and TAP scholarship holders Ben Warnock and Jasper Odgers who all had respectable years on the field. The club retained the University Cup (against UNSW) for the third consecutive year. Suffice it to say, the club celebrated long and hard into the night at club sponsor The Roxbury Hotel. The Cynics of yesteryear pulled on their uniforms again for the second Past vs. Present Match – with participants bridging five decades.

Notable appearances include Dr Ted Yarad, Hartley Anderson, David Hynes, Damian Spinks and Ron Finlay, Darby Quoyle, Jason Moir, Dave Goldsmith, Peter Merrington, Kye Hislop, Lee Corbett, as well as Ian and Dane Wigg. The day also proved to be a great fundraiser for the club, with an estimated $1000 raised towards the trust and Ron Rushbrooke foundation. The club also sent away a team to the AUGs, who came home Gold Medalists after taking silver in 2008. The gold medal match cemented Sydney Uni Baseball as the strongest University team of the recent era, with 3 gold and 1 silver in the last 4 years. Congratulations to TAP scholarship holder Jasper Odgers and Daniel Illingworth on their selection in the Green and Gold All-Star team. Congratulations for 2009 must go to club veteran Wade Shipard, who received the Pam Garret (“the stump”) award for his outstanding contribution to the club as not only a formidable 1st grade player, but also for his exceptional work on the Club’s webpage. TAP holder Jasper Odgers received the Jenny Finlay award. Jasper was also awarded the Tatonka Memorial Award for his amazing 171 pitch effort, which led the Club to gold at AUG’s. Scott Moran was the Club’s MVP for the third time, for his outstanding season not only on the mound, but also with the bat. Club Batting Champion went to Grant

Basketball The SU Basketball Club spent a large part of the year of 2009 rebuilding its management and structure in order to acquire more funds and build on current finances. This was done in an effort to improve the organisation and standing of the club for future years. The financial situation at the beginning of the year left much to be desired, with past committees incorrectly utilising funds leading to debt. However, this was overcome with greater organisation and financial management and protocols have been put in place such as the increasing of the club membership fee to ensure that the problem does not recur. The first semester saw much of the allotment spent on purchasing equipment that was previously lacking such as balls for training sessions, as well as uniforms for the teams that were entered into the Sydney Comets Competition at the Alexandria Basketball stadium. However, considering the minimal funds that were available, it was only a small amount.

Next year, we intend to build on this equipment, adding extra balls as well as other training gear such as cones etc to improve the quality of our team training sessions. This money was also spent hiring coaching staff to aid in the selection of teams and the placement of these teams within the competition. The women entered a team in the Premier League as well as one in both the first and third divisions with the men entering a single team in the men’s first division. Both men and women enjoyed their time as a team and those who were less experienced were able to learn a lot from the others in their teams who had had more court time. The women’s Premier League team had its most successful season of recent years, placing in the middle of the table at the season end thanks to some new blood and a few senior returns.

In order to increase club membership as well as funding there are various fundraising exercises planned for next year. For these events we hope to gain sponsorship and gather donated prizes to maximise potential funds raised. We have planned BBQs, lucky dips as well as organised social events throughout the year to be run in conjunction with other sporting clubs. This should give our members the opportunity to get to know each other better as well as other athletes throughout the uni. 2009 was a great year for the SU Basketball Club. Hopefully future years can build on its foundations and continue to grow in both size and strength. Peter Skinner President

The men’s team was entered into the East Coast Challenge placing 5th. For the first time both the men and women entered teams in Division 1 of the Australian University Games competition. Both performed well, winning themselves a spot in the quarter finals and although there were disappointing final results both teams played in close games, the women losing 4 games with 5 point margins or less.

Boat Sydney University Boat Club continued its strong performance in elite rowing in 2010. The year opened with a dominant display at the NSW State Championships in February (where competing with our women’s club as Sydney University) we won the overall pointscore for the seventh year running.

Eleven of the thirty three athletes on the Senior national team were from Sydney University Rowing.

crew was hit by injuries to four of our top oarsman and we came in second to Melbourne.

Nick Hudson (Men’s Sen Quad) and Francis Hegerty and Matt Ryan (Men’s Sen Four) won silver medals at the World Championships in Poland while Sasha Belonogoff won bronze representing Australia in the Men’s U23 Quad. Our Director of Rowing, Phil Bourguignon was appointed as a coach on the senior team for the Women’s Double Scull.

Towards the end of 2009 our Director, Phil Bourguignon accepted a coaching position in England and left just prior to Christmas after four years at our club. Mark Prater took over as our Acting Director of Rowing.

In total Sydney Uni won 18 gold medals and highlights included winning all four single scull championships, winning the Men’s Elite Eights for the fifth year running with our No 2 crew coming second.

In mid year two of our senior rowers who were not seeking selection in 2009 travelled to the famous Henley Regatta in England. Terrence Alfred and Brodie Buckland contested the senior pairs making the semi-finals.

After the states, the club travelled to the nationals at Lake Barrington, Tasmania, where our team again did well, winning the overall point score and topping the medal tally with 14 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze. Many SUBC athletes represented NSW on the final day in the interstate regatta. In the major event the Men’s Kings Cup the NSW crew (with six SUBC rowers and cox) were dominant going to the line winners by nearly six seconds over arch-rivals Victoria.

Our next competition of note was the University Rowing Championships held in Canberra at the end of September. The team repeated the performance of recent years winning the overall men’s and women’s trophies and the overall team trophy. However we were not able to recapture the highly sought Oxford and Cambridge Cup – going down to Adelaide University.

The following month at the National Selection Regatta a record number of our athletes were selected in the 2009 Australian Senior A and U23 teams.

In late November our teams travelled to Melbourne to take on Melbourne University in the Head of the Yarra time trial over about 8 kms. This was a chance for the two leading club eights of Australia to go head to head over a challenging course. Unfortunately our

Boxing The club expresses its thanks to Club Captain Tom Whitworth, Treasurer David Bloomfield and President Patrick Cunningham lifting the club banner at the orientation week stall of 2009, extolling the virtues of the sweet science to new undergraduates.

Thanks to Luke Mitchell who sponsored the evening and to Residential College undergraduates who supervised the collecting of entrance money at the gates. The money was donated to The Glebe Youth Service, to assist in their good work for youth in the local area. The night concluded with one of the most willing super heavyweight bouts with the underdog Henry Little winning in a surprise knockdown of his larger and heavier opponent, Luke Inman.

The club would also like to express its thanks to coaches Omar Colakaglu, Greg Stanton and George Psellis, as well as the further coaching assistance which was received from Johnny Lewis, Pardeep Jagdev, Laurence AbdulReheim, George Psellis, George Charos, Paul Miller and Dennis Moffat. The expert knowledge and passionate dedication of all coaches continues to improve the fitness, defence skills and sparring abilities of all club members.

The inaugural ‘Tracey’ award honours the foundation professor of Surgery for UNSW, who was an undergraduate at Sydney University during World War II. He remained undefeated at all his university championships and passed away earlier in 2009 after writing his autobiography ‘Inside the Ropes’.

Dr Tony Collings recovering from chemotherapy was back on his toes and had started training again. We were looking forward to seeing him build up to making his comeback. On Wednesday 14th October the club hosted the Sydney University Inter Collegiate Boxing Tournament, on No 1 Oval, in front of a passionate crowd of 700 packing the Grandstand. There was a record number of bouts with late college entries unable to be integrated into the program.

The inaugural ‘Bowring’ award honours the professor of Paediatric Surgery at UNSW and one of the founders of the Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital. At Uni Toby became one of the stalwarts and lead boxer in a club that was one of the largest and most competitive at university. The Club is most grateful for the generous donation to the Foundation to assist in a Scholarship, to be named after Dr Bowring, for a boxing club member.

Vale Dr Tony Collings 1938 -2010 It is with great sadness that I advise that Head Coach of Sydney University Boxing Dr. Tony Collings, OAM, passed away on 11th January 2010. Tony was an outstanding sports administrator as President of Australian University Sport, on the board of Boxing Australia and on FISU (Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire) where he chaired the Committee for Sports Regulation. His considered intellect and astute judgment was admired and assisted in promoting Amateur boxing in a positive light. Tony was awarded an OAM for his service to Australian University Sport, not only at the club, district and national level but also at the international level. Tony will be greatly missed and forever honoured for his inspirational work. Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness honoured Tony with a Gold award in 1995. The club is hoping to organize a dinner in Tony’s honour later in the year which will also act as a way of raising funds for a scholarship in his honour. Patrick Cunningham President

State Championhsips This year the State Championships were held at the Kosty Tszyu Gym at Rockdale, in October. Scott Thompson in the 58 kg class, coached by George Plellis, tried his hand but was unsuccessful in proceeding to the semi finals.

Canoe The Sydney University Canoe Club (SUCC) has continued to promote canoeing and kayaking within the Sydney Uni community during 2009. 2009 saw a large number of new members participating in the club’s regular activities, the weekly harbour paddles. Led by senior club members these paddles were an opportunity to share skills & techniques. A number of successful overnight paddles have also been organised throughout the year, with locations

including the Hawkesbury River and Broughton Island on the Central Coast. Representing the Sydney Uni Canoe Club, several members competed in the Hawkesbury Classic this year - a 100km overnight endurance paddle from Windsor to the Brooklyn Bridge. Catherine Barnes and Mathew Lister both completed the race with the latter coming fourth in the open competitive class, finishing in 11hrs 47 mins. Richard Barnes gained first place in both the Slalom (mixed C2) and the marathon (V45 mixed K2) at the World Masters Games.

During 2009, many members have also taken part in the Sydney Canoe Polo competition run by Paddle NSW. Run weekly, this tournament has given members the opportunity to spend time on the water improving skills within a fun and friendly environment. The club recognises and thanks the 2009 executive committee for their contributions throughout the year. Peter Harvey Secretary

Cricket - Men Our 2008/2009 season was a remarkable success, not necessarily reflected in the number of premiership trophies, but outstanding in the depth and quality of our team performances. A close second in the Club championship testifies to the strength of our performance. We can be justifiably proud of the fact that we are the first club in over 50 years to have their top three grades reach the final. Our second grade repeated their wonderful success of last year, with an excellent victory over Penrith, and was the only team to lose the toss on a rain affected weekend, be sent in and still be victorious. We acknowledge the wonderful performances of our first and third grade teams who performed admirably throughout the season and did well to make the finals. It was unfortunate that they could not achieve the final win for premiership glory. Our other teams performed credibly and fifth grade were very unlucky not to have proceeded further in the finals competition. Off the field, we made excellent progress. The appointment of a new Director of Cricket, David Jessep, was a major step forward for the Club. David has done an excellent job already in working with scholarship holders, developing a schools program and developing some linkages which will lead to new sponsorship opportunities. Additionally, David’s

leadership skills, together with those of Club stalwart James Rodgers, were acknowledged at the Sydney Cricket Association Premier’s Dinner where they were named 3rd grade & 5th grade Captains of the year respectively. Thanks must also go to Coaching Director Matthew Phelps, whose contribution goes far beyond practice and match days. Matthew’s commitment is exemplary. He is always looking for new opportunities to improve the Club and our performance. Similarly, Dave Butchart has made an outstanding contribution as Director of Operations, as well as contributing magnificently as a player. Phil Logan did a great job again as Chairman of Selectors and as Chairman of the Sydney Uni Cricket Club Foundation. His ability to work with the captains and cope with the team changes, no matter how late, helps the performance and stability of the Club enormously. Geoff De Mesquita has been a wonderful asset in the improved administration of the Club. Geoff has worked very closely with the Sydney Cricket Association to make sure that the Club is up to date with the administration requirements. In regards to the canteen, Geoff received great support from a number of volunteers from the parents this year. This was particularly gratifying and the broader support from parents such as the Leys, the Morgans and the McLeans was very much appreciated. We have made some progress on our new viewing facility and pavilion between the ovals. We are working closely with Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness, the University

administration and Cricket NSW to expedite the project. Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness has been an excellent supporter of so many of our programs, such as the Director of Cricket and the pavilion. Their continuing contribution through the grounds staff is valued highly. We thank all of the SUSF executive team from Bruce Ross, as Chair, Rob Smithies, Executive Director, through to the staff, Michelle, Ian, Tony and Rod Tubbs, in particular, for their support. We must also thank Ray Hunt and his team for their untiring efforts to ensure good conditions for the players and their efforts on some of the rainy days to make sure that our grounds were playable. This was a major achievement and a big step forward for the Club especially during the finals. To all of the volunteers and other supporters, we say “thank you”. Our scorers, in particular, have been major contributors both on match day and at other events. Even the updated scores from our first grade scorer, Marty, come with a little humour. Congratulations to the other successful clubs in the Sydney Grade competitions, particularly St George who achieved back-to-back first grade premierships, and Penrith who just pipped us for the club championship. Finally, thank you to all the players and coaching staff that ensured that the season was highly enjoyable for themselves and club supporters, with their outstanding efforts over the 2008/2009 competition. Michael O’Sullivan Chairman

Cricket - Women The 2008/09 season was jam packed with cricket. UWCC held a free skills day for Newcastle Juniors Players, assisted by their coach Barry Elliott. It was a highly successful event and one that we are eager to continue in future seasons. All of these players are valuable assets to the club, and we need to ensure they are utilised. It will be the role of the recruitment co-ordinator to set up programs for junior development for the coming season, and repeat the junior skills day in 2010. CricHit was run again in 2009, by UWCC player and committee member Kate Owen, and was the most successful season so far for the UWCC program. It is hoped that these girls will continue to move forward in their development and compete in the Sydney Rivers Girl’s Competition in the 2009/10 season. Twilight12s succeeded again in 2008/09. We are hopeful it will continue this year as it exposes women to the game of cricket, and provides a fun social activity for the players. As for inter-club matters, the weekly newsletter proved very effective this year and is an initiative that will be continued next season.

UWCC has recognised the need for improvement in our second grade side, and is determined to change the club’s focus to second grade and junior development. The 2009/10 season will be one of immense change as the club’s committee structure is being rebuilt, and our second grade players get the attention and recognition they so much deserve. The Women’s World Cup was held in NSW in March of 2009. This year UWCC had 2 Australian representative players, Alex Blackwell and Lisa Sthalekar. Australia finished fourth overall, while England pipped New Zealand in the final to hold the trophy once more. Cricket Australia Ambassadors and UWCC players Kate Blackwell and Alex Blackwell ensured the message got out to the public and the World Cup proved a success with the crowds. Hopefully women’s cricket in Australia, and in particular Sydney, will continue to expand on the back of this success. The 2008/09 season saw a transition in the administration of the club. The club presidency role was vacated and Lizzy Farrell took a well earned break from the role of Secretary. She was replaced in this role by Sara Hungerford for the season.

Thank you to the UNSW and Sydney University groundsmen for providing quality grounds for trainings and matches, we are proud to call the grounds of UNSW and Sydney Uni home. Thankyou also to both the mens clubs SUCC, UNSWCC, Michelle Nancarrow, and Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness, Helen Bryson, and UNSW Sport and Recreation, Paul Taylor and the Sydney Women’s Cricket Association, for your continued support of UWCC, as well as your patience and assistance during a particularly difficult transition period in our club. Finally thankyou to Erica Meyer, Alex Blackwell, Kate Blackwell and Lizzy Farrell for taking on a huge administrative role at the back end of the season. The new committee structure for the year ahead looks more sustainable and effective. Here’s to 2010 bringing Obama like “change we can believe in.” Lizzy Farrell Club President

Issues likely to impact on our club in the following season is the introduction of the player points system, as well as the likely entry of ACT into the Women’s National Cricket League and requirements on club members to play cricket there.

Fencing 2009 was another good year for the fencing club. Throughout this year club members continued to achieve good results in both State and National level competitions, and Sydney University has continued to maintain its position as one of the dominant fencing clubs and training venues in Sydney. Sydney University continued to be well represented at the four national tournaments in 2009, in addition to the regular gamut of State Competitions. Standout performers from Sydney Uni Fencing Club were Atlanta Olympian and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Sarah Osvath, who continued to consistently dominate Women’s Epee in New South Wales and ultimately won silver at Australian National Championships. And Sydney University Student, Jessica Brooks, with her eyes firmly fixed on Australian representation at London in 2012, won a bronze medal in a hotly contested Women’s Sabre event. Other encouraging performances at the Australian Championships were a 10th place in Men’s Foil achieved by Sydney University Student, Daniel Osvath, and an 8th place in the

Veteran Men’s Foil Event achieved by Sydney Uni Alumni, and long standing member of the Fencing Club, Dr John Christodoulou. Quality coaching in Foil, Epee and Sabre continues to be available at Sydney Uni Fencing from Former Chinese National Champion and Olympic Coach, Simon Jin, Master at Arms, Angelo Sant Angelo, Olympian William Ronald; Former Australian Champion Julian May, and Anthony Watts in 2009. The beginner’s fencing classes continue to be the most successful short courses run at Sydney University with three sessions being offered, three times a year in 2009, all of which were consistently over-subscribed. Congratulations go to Fencing Master Angelo Sant Angelo for this continued success. Intermediate fencing classes have proved a successful vehicle for novice fencers leaving the beginner’s class to make the transition into regular club training, thus ensuring continuing growth of the club. Sydney University continues to maintain its reputation as a serious training venue whilst also providing a positive social environment for its members. There is also a strong contingent of junior fencers that train regularly at the club and social events held at regular intervals throughout 2009 were all well attended.

Thanks must be extended to the Fencing Club Executive, who with other club members actively assisted in the weekly running of the club by giving their valuable training time to attend to administration matters, fielding new enquiries, organising social events, maintaining equipment, and generally made themselves available to novices and intermediate fencers, providing encouragement and direction, and thereby ensuring the continuing growth and success of the fencing club at Sydney University. Flames Despite a number of new and young faces to the 200809 team roster, this season proved to be a rebuilding year, which resulted in an acceptable 6th position, given the number of new players, and just missing out on the top 5 finals series. Flames veteran Alicia Poto had an outstanding year on court her experience and leadership qualities proving pivotal in the team’s final placing. Her involvement in the off-season as part of the Opals Olympic training campaign had her in peak physical condition, which showed in her ability to play huge minutes and dominate both ends of the floor. Strong support was given by Opals Squad member Eva Afeaki, emerging player Sally Potocki and imports who improved as the season progressed. Off the court there have been a number of successful achievements. In particular, mention must go to the number of Flames players who are currently studying. At the University of Sydney we have Alicia Poto Education, Eva Afeaki – Economics & Social Science, Kiera Shiels – Commerce & Chemical Engineering, Jaimee Kennedy – Education and Rachel Watman – Arts & Science.

At other Institutions we have Sally Potocki studying Hotel Management & Erin Lorenzini continuing her Bachelor of Podiatry. Many thanks must go to Ian Evans and Madelene Rivier – Elite Athlete Program, The University of Sydney and SUSF for their ongoing support and guidance provided to our players to secure their future in life after basketball. In December we hosted our first and very successful Flames B&G Silver Jubilee Luncheon at the WatersEdge, Walsh Bay. Over170 guests were entertained by the wit of special guest Adam Spencer who interviewed present players followed by past players Robyn Maher, Michelle Timms, Karen Dalton and Trish Fallon. Much needed funds were raised and we look forward to making the next luncheon bigger and better again. Several athletes were recognised at the Flames Annual Presentation Night with a number of awards announced: • Coaches Award – Kiera Shiels

To cap off a great individual season performance, Alicia Poto was also named the Women’s National Basketball League Best Defensive Player for 2008-09. The ACUVUE Sydney Uni Flames would like to acknowledge its many corporate and individual sponsors who have continued their ongoing support of our program, including Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness and the University of Sydney who play an integral part in the success of the Flames. We look forward to continuing and building on our strong relationship moving towards the 2009-10 WNBL Season. The outlook for our club looks solid with the further development of our young & emerging players, retaining our experienced veterans and the ongoing support of a stable management to grow this program to become the “Club” of choice for players in the WNBL. Gymnastics In 2009 the Sydney University Gym sports Club continued to provide a broad range of activities, aimed at encouraging students and community members to participate in gymnastics and cheerleading in a fun, social and safe environment. Our gymnasts began in 2009 by clowning around at O’Week to promote the club, and continued this later in the year by performing two very popular displays, at Sydney Uni LIVE Open Day for Year 12s and the Spring back to Sydney Alumni Reunion. Proving that gymnasts really do like making cupcakes as much as eating them, the Club also raised money with several bake sales going towards coaching costs. The Women’s Artistic Gymnastics girls once again competed in State Stream, in levels 4 and 5, with Lina Maria Corrigan, Isobelle Guyot, Lizanne Wilmott, Elizabeth Andrews, Roxanne Azoory and Trieste Corby all performing commendably with several top 20 finishes. Kat Teh should also be mentioned. Kat would have competed in level 4, but unfortunately was injured the week before competition. Yasmine Loupis coached and choreographed the girls’ routines, and put in hours of work prior to the competition and on the day. The Club owes Yasmine a big thank you.

In November this year, the Club resurrected their Invitational Competition, in what will hopefully become an annual event. The competition was held at Castle Hill RSL. Competitive and recreational gymnasts from the Club and Epping PCYC were in attendance. The vibe was relaxed and friendly, with many new gymnasts competing for the first time, and ‘former gymnasts’ coming out of retirement to remember what all the fun was about. Judges Yasmine Loupis and Emma Rollinson put the gymnasts through their paces. Bethany Russell (Sydney Uni) and Simon Dawson (PCYC) dominated the advanced stream in the women’s and men’s divisions respectively. Michelle Cheung won Women’s Intermediate and Lachlan Walker (Sydney Uni) and Rebecca Whalley of Epping won the Beginners streams. The awards night was held next door at Castle Hill RSL. This year, cheerleading coaches Zoe Eross and Katrina Sichlau capably coached the teams to several impressive performances. The success of the cheerleading program is a testament to the hard work of Zoe Eross. The Blue Stunt team, coached by Katrina Sichlau, finished 1st at state in the AUS cheer stream, 2nd at AASCF and in the top 10 at AASCF Nationals. The Gold Stunt team, also coached by Katrina Sichlau, finished 2nd at AUS cheer and AASCF State championships, and first at AUS cheer Nationals. The Gold Lions team, was coached by Zoe Eross, with choreography by Dion Arlotta. The team finished 2nd at AASCF and AUS cheer State, 2nd at AUS cheer Nationals and

3rd at AASCF Nationals against some very credible opposing teams. Aside from competitions, the cheerleaders thoroughly enjoyed their winter training camp in Hornsby, as well as their trip down to Melbourne for AUS cheer nationals in October, with many stunting opportunities to be found in local parks and public places. Some of the cheerleaders were involved in promoting the Channel Ten TV show ‘Glee’ at Blacktown Westfields in September, with the cast of ‘Glee’ visiting Australia especially for the performance. The cheerleaders performed a routine to ‘Single Ladies’ by Beyonce, as well as getting to socialise with the cast of ‘Glee’. They were great ambassadors for Sydney Uni. Finally, a big thanks to the following members of the committee: Shu Yeung (VP) for his boundless enthusiasm and constant leadership at training; Madeleine Brown (VP) and Nate Guenette (Cheer Rep) for doing an amazing job liaising with the gymnasts and the cheerleaders; Brendon Wong (Secretary) for his ongoing assistance; Khairil Musa (Treasurer) for his impeccable organization and constant support; Elisabeth Andrews (First Aid Officer) for her conscientious approach to training; and Roxanne Azoory (WAG) and Mike Brand (MAG) for assisting with WAG competitions and organising training shirts. Handball Year 2009 was very successful in achievements for the Sydney University Handball Club. Both the women’s and men’s teams were champions of the NSW League held at Olympic Park. Abel Salhioui was appointed as men’s team coach and Falk Von Hollen was appointed as women’s team coach. At the end of the year Falk stepped down from his position and started travelling around the world. Kimberly Higgins took over the women’s team coaching. The SUHS thanks Abel, Falk and Kim for their hard work and excellent results. Six of our club players were selected to represent Australia at the Oceania World Qualification Women’s Championships and Pacific Cup held in Brisbane, 01 – 06th June, 2009. The players were: Jessica Fearnside, Aminta Thomas, Kim Higgins, Sally Potocki, Gizelle Van de Merve and Vanja Smiljanovic. Unfortunately, due to the University Basketball World Cup commitments, Sally Potocki had to withdraw from the Handball National Team. The Australian Handball Team won the Oceania Championship and was qualified to the World Cup. The Sydney University Handball Club provided three players for the Australian Women’s Handball World Championships held in Benjim, China,

December 2009. Our club players were: Jessica Fearnside, Aminta Thomas and Gizelle Van de Merve. The Australian Team did not manage to win any games and finished in 24th place. The SUHC would like to thanks all the players for their contributions. Three of our club players were selected to the Australian Men’s Team Squad; Pascal Winkler, Steve Plummer and Michael Sullivan. We wish them good luck in the 2010 season. Six of Sydney University Handball Women’s Players and seven of Men’s Players were selected to the NSW Senior State Teams to compete at the National Handball Championships held in Perth, October 2009. Both teams played in exceptional style. The men’s team won the national title and the women’s team was the runners up. Four of Sydney University Women’s Handball Players were selected to the NSW under 21 Junior State Teams to compete at the National Handball Championships held in Brisbane. The team was too strong for all the other states and they won the national title. Sally Potocki was voted as the best player and top scorer during this tournament.

and her team were the champions. Jessica Fearnside was also the coach for the under 17 Australian Women’s Handball Team. The SUHS thanks Jessica for all her efforts, dedication and great results. Every year many handball club members take special tasks in different competitions. Our club produced four referees and four table officials for various levels of championships. Jessica Fearnside was the referee and the Table Official for the NSW League and National Championship. Dorothy Potocka was Technical Table Official and referee for the Oceania Handball Federation Women’s World Championship Qualifying Tournament and Pacific Cup held in Brisbane, Australia. Kai Englehardt, Falk Von Hollen and Alex Tzigher were the referees for the NSW League. Hockey 2009 marked one of the most successful seasons for the Sydney University Hockey Club in recent years. Success on the field was marked by two Premierships for the Men’s Club, one Premiership for the Women’s Club in SWHL and one in SNWHA and 2 Premierships in the juniors club. We had no fewer than 10 teams in the club making finals hockey. Alongside this success were a number of new developments in the club allowing us to expand and take on new players, both in outdoor and indoor hockey. Our new structure with a Director of Hockey and Elite Athlete Program has allowed us to focus on the retention and development of our junior players, aiding a smoother transition into grade hockey. This has also allowed us to develop our coaches as well, with SUHC now having three of our coaching staff working at State Level.

Sydney Uni appoints a Director of Hockey each year to manage and train the Club’s coaches and the Elite Athlete Program (EAP). The top priority for the club is still to improve the Club’s Infrastructure with a “home turf” within the Inner West. Plans are well underway with the support of Sydney University, Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness and Hockey NSW. In 2009 we focused on the educational aspects of hockey and utilised our relationships with Sydney Uni’s facilities to promote this from Juniors up to Seniors. This included Education Programs, Sport and Fitness facilities and preparation for future scholarship athletes. Sydney Uni Hockey Club could not continue its growing success year on year without the support of Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness. The funding and support they provide to the club is vital, so that we can bring on board top quality coaches .The importance of these people means we can continue to improve our performance both on and off the pitch as well as providing the best Elite Athlete Program in Hockey outside NSWIS.

Judo The last twelve months have been very successful for Sydney University Judo Club (SUJC). With the club winning a World Title, State Team Champions, Australian University Games Champions and recruiting large numbers for regular training sessions. The year began with Instructor Kristof Frankowski winning two Gold Medals at the World Master’s Championship in Atlanta, USA. Defeating a very strong opponent from Russia, Kristof was able to stop him and all of his opponents, to become the U100kg and over 100kg World Champion. Congratulations Kristof! At the NSW State Teams Championship, SUJC entered two teams into both the 1st and 2nd Grade division. Our 2nd Grade team won the whole tournament for the second year in a row. The club has a history of producing excellent players who begin their Judo career at University, and this win proved this once again. Our 1st grade team went on to the final, taking away the silver, defeating UNSW Judo club in the process.

SUJC was revealed as the strongest University Judo Club, with its best performance at the Australian University Games for several years. The final medal tally was 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze. The Men’s team dominated all 5 of its opponent University teams, with a clear run to the Gold medal. Freshman Andrew Yeo took the Gold in the U/66kg division, receiving a University Colour and Green and Gold team selection for his efforts.

Many social events were held during 2009, and many friendships were formed within the club. This has always been the most important reason to join a University sporting club, and why we remember the time we were in it, many years into the future. In 2010 this will remain a primary part of Club life as we train together in an effort to better our Judo, our friendships and our lives.

For 2010, the club would like to welcome our new coach, Istvan Szasz. With more than 2 decades of experience as a Professional Judo player in Europe, Istvan joins the star line up of SUJC coaches, including World Champion Kristof Frankowski, Olympic representative Barry Johnson and 50 year Judo veteran Randall Jones. One of the club’s aims for 2010 will be to nurture our high level competition players, enabling them to excel on the state, national and international stage.

Matthew Collins President

The club would like to acknowledge Randall Jones for his tireless contributions to the club. He is the Club’s guardian and is responsible for the thriving club we have today. Congratulation to Tom Shaw for winning the most improved player for 2009 and Andrew Yeo, Rookie of the Year 2009. The award for services to the Club and for upholding the Spirit of Judo went to the 2009 President, Matthew Collins. Special thanks goes out to our many long time members, who continue to support the club both physically and through encouraging us to work hard to become better Judoka.

Kendo The University of Sydney Kendo Club aims to achieve the mastery of Kendo through ongoing training to build both our physical and mental capabilities. In 2010, the club aims to build on the efforts of the last year and to grow vertically. In order to do so, we aim to reach our target of maintaining 30 new club members while retaining our current 50 or so members. If these goals are met we will have enough funding to independently increase our capital, enabling us to replace broken equipment and purchase more club equipment for use by new beginner members. Although the club is still one of the youngest clubs in Australia, we have given strong assistance to the NSW Kendo Association. By inviting international players as well as organising special events, Kendo in Australia has become better known worldwide. Despite being a kendo club first, we all enjoy activities beyond training including regular dinners, BBQs and parties. We have an exceptional group of followers who, despite not training, come regularly just for the events. Whatever you are after; fitness, discipline, course assistance, or to make friends, the Kendo Club will be sure to cater to your needs. Walter Chung President

Netball The start of the 2009 season saw Sydney University Netball forge a new affiliation with City of Sydney Netball Association in remaining a part of the NSW Netball State League Competition.

This new partnership welcomed a fourth team to our already strong three-pronged club and a new coaching department comprising of Vicki Jansen (Division 1), Peter Havrlant (Division 2) and Samantha Dawes (Division 5). Our Waratah Cup team this year had an impressive season with a strong finish in the top four, narrowly missing out on a place in the Grand Final. The Club was proud to witness the continuing development of these elite athletes, most notably in Erin Bell and Abbie McCullouch who made NSW representative teams. Erin Bell will be sadly missed in 2010 as she takes up her position with the Adelaide Thunderbirds. The new look Division 2 and Division 5 team knew that the task for the season would be a challenge but both teams produced some encouraging performances throughout the season. Their commitment to netball and the development of the Club holds us in great stead for coming seasons. The ever reliable Division 6 team again made the finals series but, plagued by injury, fell short of a second consecutive Premiership showdown.

Outside of the State League competition, Sydney Uni netball again entered a Women’s and Mixed team in the Australia University Games competition held on the Gold Coast in September. Although no medals were brought home we were proud to call two Green and Gold players our own in Sarah Bornstein and Madeline Bird. As we start the 2010 season the Committee would like to extend their thanks to the City of Sydney Netball Association, particularly Samantha Dawes, our coaches, umpires and scorers whose ongoing support and commitment is what makes our club a successful part of Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness. To our players, we look forward to a bigger and better season in 2010. Rebecca Dunger President Pheobe Jagoe Secretary

Rock-climbing and Mountaineering Over the past year the Sydney University Rockclimbing and Mountaineering Club (SURMC) has been very successful in helping its members experience the joys of climbing with more than 20 outdoor climbing trips to a range of destinations and a strong focus on improving the skills and experience of newer members. In addition, SURMC again won the annual interclub climbing competition between clubs from UNSW, UTS and USyd and became the first club to claim the newly created ‘Manky Cam’ trophy. 2009 also saw the launch of the club’s new website (www.surmc.org. au), replacement of a large quantity of ageing safety equipment, numerous social events and good crowds at the regular Wednesday night indoor climbing sessions at the Ledge. Organising outdoor climbing trips is definitely one of the club’s main activities, and in this aspect the club has had one of its most active years. The standout trip of the year was the traditional Easter trip to Mt Arapiles in western Victoria. Araps is the Mecca of Australian rock-climbing and offers a huge number of classic climbs for beginners through to advanced climbers. This year, the burgeoning attendance list meant that the club’s

gear supplies were stretched; however that didn’t stop anyone from experiencing the fantastic climbing and campground atmosphere. Other highlights included a trip to Frog Buttress in QLD during the winter break, two weekend trips to Point Perpendicular, an introductory mountaineering trip to the Snowy Mountains National Park and a return to Mt Arapiles in the spring. In between, there were trips to many areas in the Blue Mountains and crags scattered around the outskirts of Sydney including a number of beginner oriented days and two women’s trips. Expanding the club’s skill base and passing on experience to junior members is another very important activity for the club. As such, there were a number of skills oriented trips throughout the year including introductory trips for both sport and traditional lead climbing as well as a basic self rescue skills trip and a self rescue course with a professional climbing guide and instructor. On the competition front the main event of the year was the interclub comp contested between SURMC and clubs from UNSW and UTS. The event was a lot of fun and SURMC was lucky enough to win the overall competition and the newly created perpetual trophy, dubbed ‘The Manky Cam’. Several SURMC members also achieved top three places in the individual categories and we anticipate stiff competition to retain the trophy next year. An intra-club comp, restricted

to members of SURMC, was also very successful and the winners were Tim Frommer and Georgi Knox in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. Thanks needs to go to Phil Staples and the staff at the Ledge for running these two great events. Official club events were wrapped up for the year at the end of year party with the awarding of the winners of the photo and writing comps. The winner of the photo comp, by popular vote, was Kate Randall while James Henderson and Hamish Bradley were awarded as joint winners of the writing comp for their pieces that vividly evoked the experience of climbing. From a personal perspective, 2009 has been a highly enjoyable year to be involved with SURMC. A big thank you has to go out to all of the committee members and people who helped to organise trips and events for their effort and enthusiasm. I believe that the club is in a strong position for the future and I look forward to seeing what excitement and adventures the next year will bring. Michael Lee President

Rowing 2009 was an extremely strong year performance wise! Outstanding Performances At the State Championships the team won the overall point score by a massive margin. At the Interstate Regatta, 8 of our rowers represented NSW, 2 represented Queensland, 2 represented the ACT and 1 represented Tasmania. At the National Championships, we won 17 medals (7 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze). Sally Kehoe medaled in all five of her events. At the World Championships, our Australian representatives Sally Kehoe placed 4th in the double scull, coached by SU coach, Phil Bourguignon; Bronwen Watson placed 5th in the lightweight double scull; and Sarah Cook placed 5th in the pair. Charlotte Walters was selected in the Australian under 23 quad scull, and at the Under 23 World Championships the quad finished 8th overall. The Edward Trickett Regatta was the final regatta for our novices and intermediates for the season and 6 of 10 crews medalled. In the State Masters Championships the Masters squad won 9 medals (1 Gold, 6 Silver, and 2 Bronze). The squad then travelled to the National Masters Championships where 11 medals were won (8 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze). At the World Master Games the squad performed well and won 8 medals (3 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze). The Masters are extremely grateful to all the volunteers and would like to thank Phillip Titterton, George Bawtree and Claire Glendenning for their dedicated coaching and support this year.

At the AUC, Sydney University Rowing won the overall and women’s pointscore. At the annual Blues Awards, SUWRC athletes Sally Kehoe, Sarah Cook and Kylie Duff were awarded the prestigious Blues Award. At the NSW Rowing Association Awards, Sydney University Rowing was rewarded for a very successful season, by winning the NSWRA Honours Recipients Trophy, the Women’s Elite & U23 Shield, and the A and B Grade Pointscore. Bronwen Watson was awarded Oarswoman of the Year. Friendships Forged In August, the Glebe Sesquicentenary Regatta was held in Blackwattle Bay to commemorate 150 years of Glebe. Thanks to the Glebe Society, the Sydney City Council, Bob Armstrong, Lesley Lynch, Verity Firth, Kim Mackney, Liz Kell, Lizzi Chapman, Murray Clarke, Renée Kirby, James Macartney, Alan Bennett, James Harding and Jane Spring for their help in ensuring the day was a success.

conducted by the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority to look at possible future uses for White Bay and Glebe Island. SUWRC members enjoyed being part of NSW Rowing Association events including the very successful Sydney University Faculty of Economics and Business sponsored Youth Day. Christian Renford, Georgie Lee and Paul Coates at the NSW Rowing Association work hard and we thank them for being consistently positive and helpful. Thanks also to the Australian and NSW Institutes of Sport and Department of Sport and Recreation. A special thanks goes to St Ignatius Riverview for continuing to house some of our top rowers while we try to rebuild on the Lane Cove River.

SUWRC travelled to New Zealand to compete in the invitational Great Race on the Waikato River in NZ. Congratulations to the crew on having the character and commitment to win the 4.8km upstream race on the finish line after following the Waikato crew throughout. SUWRC then headed to Melbourne, to kick off an annual ‘Head of the Yarra’ challenge between USYD and UMELB men’s and women’s eights. We were delighted that the two University Vice-Chancellors thought this worthy of starting this new tradition.

SUSF and the University are our key supporters and the SUSF Elite Athlete Program provides dedicated attention to our rower’s training and study needs. Rowers & their families greatly appreciate SUSF and University funding for coaching, athlete scholarships and extra assistance to athletes and coaches representing Australia. As well as our Masters coaches, thanks go to our high performance and development coaches Alan Bennett (AB), Phil Bourguignon, Lizzi Chapman, Jimmy Harding, James Macartney and Scott Coleman. Best wishes to Phil in his new role in the UK in 2010. Finally we wish to thank the alumni and community members who support us in fundraising for equipment and representative travel and in our campaigns to keep the waterways safe for our rowers.

Rugby Union - Men Sydney University Football Club had another very successful season in 2009, winning the Club Championship, the Colts Club Championship and a fifth successive First Grade title. The club made the finals series in all grades (four senior and three Colts) and the grand finals in five grades (First and Third grades and three Colts), winning premierships in First Grade and First and Second grade Colts.

Congratulations must be extended to the tremendous coaching efforts across the board, from Damien Hill and Greg Mumm and fellow grade coaches, to Nick Ryan and his fellow Colts coaches. Congratulations also go to the club’s fitness gurus, Martin Harland and Tim Leahy and their Elite Development (Fitness) Program. The club is also very fortunate to have a host of volunteers who give of their time and expertise to keep the club ahead of the pack. Again, the term “professional” comes to the fore. While volunteers take joy in seeing their labours bear fruit through the successes of teams and individuals, they also take pride in the club surviving as an entity to nurture new crops of players each year. I believe our volunteers are second to none in club ranks, and while much of their work goes unnoticed, their efforts can be seen in the health of the club. With the exception of one player, everyone who participated in the 2009 First Grade grand final came through SUFC Colts (the same can be said for the previous four grand finals). We endeavour to produce our own. Obviously, most of the Colts from this year’s premiership teams will filter through to the grades. Indeed, a number of Colts I players were given a taste of Grade throughout the season.

48 | UNI SYDNEY UNI & 2009 FITNESS 2009 CLUB REPORT SYDNEY SPORT & SPORT FITNESS ANNUAL REPORT

With all grades reaching the finals, there were some prolific point scorers in the ranks this season, including five who passed 100 points. Congratulations to Hayden Bushell, the club’s top scorer for the season with 228 points, Daniel Halangahu (210 in 15 games), Nathan Trist (172, including 21 tries), Justin Bosilkovski (113) and Jacob Taylor (106). And in the Colts ranks, congratulations to Bernard Foley, who finished with 242 points and Clinton Sills (141, including 23 tries). Congratulations to Daniel Halangahu on winning the club’s Best and Fairest award for 2009 as well as being named best back in First Grade and leading the point scoring in the top grade. Congratulations also to Pat McCutcheon on being named best forward in First Grade as well as for his efforts as Club Captain during the year and Ben McCalman on winning the Michael Griffin Cup for the Players’ Player of the Year. Other congratulations should go to Tom Carter, the Player of the Finals, and Bernard Foley, the Best and Fairest Colt, and all other award winners through the ranks. Congratulations also to Dan Farrell, the Clubman of the Year, Peter Playford, Colts Clubman of the Year, and Ray Hudd, Volunteer of the Year. David Mortimer SUFC President

Rugby Union – Women 2009 was another successful year for the women’s rugby club. Whilst we lost our experienced coach and ex-international player Kelly McCallum, we gained some fresh and exciting coaching talent in injured player Faryaneh Hayati.

Boasting 10 players selected in the Sydney Representative and NSW Development team to contest the nationals in July, we were well poised for a successful season. With a number of positive performances throughout the year, we managed to book ourselves a grand final spot against arch rivals Warringah. Although definitely our most courageous effort yet, we were once again unable to convert our courage and determination into a win, losing 36-19 in the final. We had 4 players selected in the Wallaroo squad, Alex Hargreaves, Faryaneh Hayati, Rachelle Pirie and Tuaine Inamata. Alex Hargreaves was also a member of the World Championship winning Australian 7’s team. Fundraising throughout the season as well as sponsorship from the Hampshire Hotel, and the ever-generous support from SUSF, allowed us to purchase a new set of jerseys and some new equipment for the club. On our agenda for next year will be securing a new coach, with a vision for a 2-3 year term. Increasing the player base through direct contact with the accommodation colleges on campus is another key strategy for our club, in an effort to one day have a second 10’s or 15’s team. Rugby League The 2009 season was one where the club set high standards on and off the field and in doing so completed some notable achievements. The performance of the 1st and 2nd grade teams in the NSW Tertiary Rugby League competition was very pleasing with 1st grade taking out the minor premiership, although several factors conspired to de-rail a charge to the grand final, with the team going down to Lewisham Old Boys in the preliminary final. 2nd grade finished the season in 3rd place, which was a commendable effort. The combined efforts of all players and staff resulted in the club taking out the club championship. The club was successful in taking out the pre-season Nines tournament, which provided a great start to the season. Later in the year the club was honoured to have 4 players selected in the NSW Universities team, and 3 players in the Australian Universities team, which toured South Africa. Given that a number of players selected in these representative teams are contracted to NRL clubs through the National Youth Competition, and teams in the national under 18s competition throughout NSW and Queensland, the achievement in making these teams from a strictly amateur environment should not be understated.

Student numbers throughout the playing ranks were very strong in 2009, and the club was commended by the NSW Tertiary League for its recruitment initiatives and excellent efforts to provide students of Sydney University with access to competitive Rugby League. The club hopes to continue this and provide even more students the opportunity to play with the Sydney University RLFC through the possible future introduction of a “merit league” by the NSW Tertiary League which allows players to enjoy a very social side of the sport where they are not able to dedicate the time to train and prepare for higher levels of competition. Head coach Jim Pizanias deserves great credit for his efforts during the 2009 season. Jim’s coaching credentials were recognised by the NSW Tertiary League with his appointment to coach the City team in the annual “City v Country” challenge and his appointment as NSW Universities’ assistant coach. The club has held some preliminary talks with several NRL clubs in regards to forming a feeder club relationship in future years should the club take a major step forward and move into the NSWRL Bundy Red Cup. Such a move would need to be carefully planned but given the club’s long history in the development of NSW Rugby League from 1920 where it contested the

NSWRL premiership for 18 seasons, it would seem appropriate for Sydney University to again be represented at these higher levels of the game in NSW. Our sponsors should be acknowledged for their great support of the club which has been high valued, particularly the Cooper’s Hotel Newtown, Macarthur Podiatry Group and Maxim Homeloans. Sailing Sydney Uni Sailing Club (SUSC) had an exciting and successful year in 2009. The club incorporated many new elements beginning from O-Week, such as the revival of the Australian University Fleet Racing Regatta, which proved attractive to the competitive uni population. For those new to the sport, the sailing school was very popular. The courses filled quickly with additional courses necessary. The club’s social weekend trips generated a large amount of interest and were a huge success. Membership almost tripled on 2008 numbers. The club hosted the Australian University Fleet Racing Regatta at Woollahra Sailing Club in Rose Bay from the 15th to the 17th of April. Students from nine universities competed under a yardstick system. All who participated agreed that an annual sailing championship should be established and incorporated into the Australian University Games. SUSC submitted a proposal to Yachting Australia and Australian University Sport detailing match racing and teams racing as part of the University Games plus a fleet racing regatta open to any uni student with a boat. This was well received and AUS quickly moved to establish an advisory group to continue working on a sailing championship.

To maintain the momentum gathered from the Fleet Racing Regatta, the club hosted the Australian University Teams Racing Regatta in October, held at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at Newport from the 2nd to the 4th of October. Eleven teams from four states participated. Many of the members of the AUS Advisory Group attended providing an excellent opportunity for students to contribute to the discussion of the new university championship. Congratulations to the team from UQ who won the event overall and to the USYD 2 team who won in the silver fleet. The social side of the club flourished in 2009 with some excellent events providing great entertainment for members. There were movie and dinner nights, massively successful weekends away, big regatta parties including a harbour cruise and others that have allowed the club to appeal to both competitive sailors and learners.

Sydney Uni Sailing Club has generated a new enthusiasm for sailing, which has resulted in the establishment of two new university clubs, tripling the total number of NSW University clubs. This will allow for a new Sydney-based intervarsity competition and has also seen sailing formally accepted into the Australian University Games. The club aims to continue to provide the means for learners to gain competence on the water while allowing the most competitive sailors the opportunity to compete at the highest level. Tom Mallet President (Commodore)

SUSC improved its financial position through growth in membership and the success of the sailing school program. The club was able to purchase three Lasers and one Tasar, expanding the club fleet to meet growing demand, while spending much-needed money on the maintenance of older boats. In 2010 the club aims to purchase six new identical two person dinghies to be used for general club sailing and specifically intervarsity teams racing which presents a great opportunity for Australian University Sailing in the future. Fundraising for these will commence in 2010.

Squash 2009 saw the Sydney University Men’s Squash Club complete another successful year. Playing membership numbers were 89 full members who played in all comps during the year. For the first time in the club since the amalgamation of the Men’s and Women’s Squash clubs in 2008 we had a women’s team playing for the club in the NSW South East District Pennant. It was a great inaugural season as the women’s team won their grade in Div 7. Well done to the team and we look forward to having more female players joining the club in 2010. As in previous years, the Club fielded teams in the SouthEastern and Eastern Pennant Competition, participating in all three seasonal pennants.

The Summer Competition is a graded handicap competition, and is used by most players as a vehicle for maintaining some level of fitness over the Christmas and New Year break. This past year we fielded 6 teams, which is an increase on other years, so this format is proving to be popular amongst members. Three teams won the grand final in the Summer Comp. The Autumn and Spring Pennants are the main competitions of the year with teams competing in grades from State level to Division 14. The Club fielded 11 teams in the Autumn Pennant and 14 in the Spring Pennant. The Club has the capacity to field 20 teams in each Pennant, so there are plenty of vacancies for anyone wishing to join our ranks.

The Spring Pennant saw 10 of the 14 teams reaching the final three play-offs, 4 teams contesting the Grand Final, with the 4 teams securing the championship in Divisions 1, 8 and 9 in the Men’s pennant and 1 in the Women’s pennant. We cater for all levels of play, from anyone wishing to be introduced to the game at the grassroots level, to those who are contemplating a return to the sport after a spell, or those wishing to join our Club from another - are all welcome. Mohammed Alkhub President

The Autumn Pennant saw the Club have 9 of the 11 teams reaching the final 3 play-offs, with 4 of these contesting the Grand Final and 1 team in Div 9 winning the Grand Final.

Snow Sports The 2009 Snow Sports season was very successful, with the team finishing a close overall 2nd in the Australian University Championships.

We had various individual successes, namely with the first places of Kristi Pikkat, Joshua Himbury, Eliza Graham, Alex Cameron and the overall men’s trophy. The overall first place went to Macquarie University, who had a much larger team and therefore a greater range of competitors.

As it is costly to take a team to the snow it is a major deterrent to competitors wishing to participate. The money received from Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness makes it possible to remove some of the burden caused by the high entry fees of events.

Solutions to our possibly coming first could be advertising the competition to a greater range of people, taking a larger team, or merely diversifying the existing team into a greater number of events.

We are also working closely with new SUBSKI sponsors who will potentially pay for the cost of uniforms and other miscellaneous expenses to further reduce the cost to the individual.

The main sporting aim of the team is to place first in the Australian University Championships. This is highly possible given the team’s previous successes in the event and the continued greater awareness about the competition throughout the University.

Through further organisation and commitment to the snow sports team, it is highly possible to achieve a result of 1st in the Australian University Championships. Based on previous years, a diversified and larger team will essentially be the key to success for 2010. Samantha Week President

Swimming This year for the Sydney University Swim Club has been enormous! Our swimmers and Coaches have truly been out and about in the world and around Australia – Matt Jaukovic and Steve Alderman attended the FINA World cup in Moscow, Stockholm and Berlin. Matt and Jono Newton attended the World University Games with Jono finishing a creditable 10th – Matt, however, suffered the dreaded Swine Flu. David Schnabl and Michael Goldstein competed for Australia at the Maccabiah Games – David finishing 6th in 50m freestyle, 7th in 100m backstroke and won a B final butterfly. Michael swam 8th in his 100m butterfly and in the B final for his 50m freestyle. Both Matt and Jono were named in the Telstra Dolphin Swim Squad – a great achievement. Chris Fydler, Olympian and ex-SUSC representative was also honoured with the position of Deputy Chef de Mission for 2012 Australian Olympic Team. However, not all accomplishments were on the world stage. At home the Sydney University Swim Club won the Sports Administrator of the Year with Chris Etter - the then President. Under her instruction, along with the committee’s support, the club soared to the great heights of winning Australian Unity GO Club of the Year

David Wise received a Blue for his outstanding performance in the water.

At our regional Meet the club was placed third overall on points with many swimmers receiving places – for many of these swimmers it was their first meet and as such a huge effort.

Nationals in March – Matt Jaukovic finished 3rd in his 100m butterfly, and 3rd in his 50m butterfly. Jono Newton finished 4th and David Wise and David Schnabl qualified for their first semi finals on the National Stage. We had 14 swimmers representing our club at the meet.

At the NSW Open Winter Championships in July, SUSC won the overall points score of the meet! With 681 points, we had every swimmer placed, either with a medal position or in the finals, and the relay teams cleaned up – Gold, Silver and Bronze.

This year the Gary Lennon Scholarship was presented to Inez Osland and Jayce Carrano.

Continuing with the winter meets the National SC in August saw Matt break a Commonwealth Record in 50m Butterfly; he also won silver in 100m Butterfly. We had Gemma Johnson, Kate Johnson Andrew D’Ambrosio and Alistaire Pickles all swim in finals. The club finished a credible 22nd, coming 4th in NSW. Emma Gray, Jess Cerni, Kate and Gemma Johnson set a new NSW record in their 4x100m freestyle relay.

receiving the award at the Australian Swim event of the Year in Canberra in October.

As we get closer to home our junior swimmers have increased in number and in doing so have given the club enormous profile around the pools of Sydney. SUSC was represented by 20 swimmers at the NSW Metropolitan Summer Championships - the team received 1 Gold, 3 silver and 3 Bronze. 6 other swimmers were in the finals. The club finished 15th overall. At State Age (13-18) level, 3 Swimmers represented the SUSC. Junior State Age (12 and under) swimming in January 09, 7 young swimmers attended. State Open – SUSC had 10 swimmers with Jono and Matt receiving Bronze Medals. At the Winter Metropolitan Championships SUSC was represented by 26 swimmers, of which, 7 swimmers were placed in finals -1 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze.

In the Speedo Sprint Series we had 7 finalists with Lewis Blackburn (9) winning Gold for his 50m backstroke, also breaking a METSEA record. Australia Swimming awards Junior Excellence Awards each year and this year SUSC had a fabulous Year with 35 of our swimmers receiving awards – 7 Gold, 9 Silver, 7 Bronze and 11 receiving Green Status. Soccer In 2009 we fielded thirtythree teams in five different associations, with over five hundred players playing in Blue and Gold. Our Women’s State League program (First Grade, Reserve Grade, U16s, U14s, and U12s) played in the Football NSW Women’s Premier League after consolidating their position in the league in 2008. Our Men’s State League squad (First Grade, U20s) played in the Football NSW Men’s Super League, our eighth year in the division.

This year we had nine men’s all-age teams playing in the Eastern Suburbs Football Association (ESFA), with an additional two teams in the ESFA Premier League competition. There were a further nine teams in the women’s all-age competitions played with the North West Sydney Women’s Football (NWSWF). Our Over 35s continued to ply their trade in the Canterbury District Soccer Football Association (CDSFA). The highlight of 2009 was the performance of our Division 1 Boy’s Youth League side who won the Club Championship! In that league the under 18s finished the regular season with twenty wins, no draws and just one loss! Especially pleasing were the Men’s Super League and under 20s sides finishing in fourth place and both teams progressing to the finals for the first time ever! The Women’s Premier League Reserves and under 16s had strong seasons with both sides reaching the finals. Six of our All Age men’s teams progressed to the finals with AA8 reaching the grand final and AA7A claiming the championship! In the North West Sydney Women’s Football Competition our AA5s and AA7s reached the finals. Our women returned from the Australian University Games with Silver, the men with Bronze. 2009 was a far superior season all round for the Club with so much promise for the future in our youth teams and extremely strong squads developed to push for titles throughout the divisions in 2010.

Over of the season (excluding finals), SUSFC won 263 games of the 599 games we played (~44%), drew 121 games (~20%) and lost 215 games (~36%). We scored a mountain of goals hitting the net 1064 times (excluding finals) while conceding 918 (excluding finals). A remarkable season all round with 2010 sure to be even bigger. From within the club big thanks must go to: the social officers in recent years Sara Maher and Catherine Burke, fundraising officer Andrew Bray, publicity officer Madelene Rivier, and our Director of Football John Curran. In late 2007 we launched our very own Foundation, which now has a capital pool in excess of $100,000 and outstanding pledges for a good sum more. In large part these were driven by club officials who had managed to reduce their involvement in the club, who also led the way with their donations: thank you Brendan Casey, Simon Philips, Rob Smithies and David Shaw. Achievements such as those listed above often depend on other, less noticeable, administrators within the club: our vice presidents David Gutwenger, Cicely Sylow and Emma Schiller, and Secretaries Terry Hogan, Jim Zammit and Cicely Sylow. The role of treasurer in particular is an enormous task and the modest profits in recent years are testament to the efforts of Peter Forwood, Terry Hogan and Mick Hawthorne to balance the budget.

This kind of sound administration allowed us to waive fees for women’s first grade in recent years. It has also been most ably supported by the club administrators of the previous four years who have covered every gap and more, Terry Hogan and Tom Bailey-Smith. The consistent effort in the administration of the club by first Terry and then Tom has been absolutely outstanding and both of them deserve a huge amount of credit for our recent success. There are also many people to thank from outside the club. First and foremost is the major sponsor, the Nag’s Head Hotel. This was our fourth year with the Nag’s Head and it is really starting to feel like the Club house, particularly on the first Friday night of the month. Many thanks to Dan O’Hara and the rest of the staff at the Nag’s for looking after us all year. Before a ball is kicked, an incredible amount of time and energy is donated by a few generous people. To our convenors and secretaries for 2009 - Jim Zammit and Simon Philips (FNSW), Andrew Bray and Cecile Guilloux (NWSWF), Pat Lloyd, Chris Brunner and Ben Godwin (ESFA), and Paul Gunson (CDSFA) - for your time and efforts organising internally, liaising externally with the people running the competitions, and somehow keeping your collective cool, thank you!

Soccer. Aside from significant funding, they also provide a quality scholarship program, athlete management and career advice to our players, on-campus facilities and assistance with pretty much whatever we need done. Thanks to Bruce Ross, Rob Smithies, David Shaw, Rodney Tubbs, Ian Evans and all of the staff. Finally, our great supporters that come back year after year, John and Joan Segal, Ray Hyslop, Michael Baume, and the members of the old boys’ network that support all of our various endeavours, thank you. These remain exciting times at SUSFC. 2010 will bring a new executive committee, with new energy and ideas about how to keep the development of the club progressing. Personally I am looking forward to reading about the achievements of the club in future years and I wish the new executive committee and the rest of the club generally all the good fortune it can sustain. Table Tennis The USYD Table Tennis Club unfortunately had a slight lull in 2008, with membership down and relatively few events, but 2009 has seen a huge turn around! Membership was in excess of 70 members, many of them regular attendees, and there were many events this year! The year kicked off with the election of a new committee and a social event, but soon after that we hosted the UK Royal Navy Table Tennis Team, and played a friendly team event against them. Both our male and female teams managed to win, but fun was had by all, despite the fact that many of the UK team had very sore feet from playing for significant periods of time, for each of the five days! Eight players from their team played at the USYDTT club from the 16th to the 21st of March. Other events that were held during the year included the interfaculty competition, along with the filming of a table tennis video where two of our players (Micky Lung and Belinda Le) were paid to act. You can find it at www.vimeo.com/8026411! Peter Ma, Australian squad coach, also came to coach our players for a couple of months.

Intent on providing some sponsorship to our players for the Australian University Games, the club held the USYDTT Open on the 29th of August. Over $400 of prize money was on offer, thanks to Jamie Powell and White Label Consulting Pty Ltd. Thirty players entered the event, a sausage sizzle was held, and the deserving Division 1 winner was Guy Fainbloom (current NSW rank #6). Our own Sisi Zhang (current NSW Women’s #3) managed to get 3rd place in Division 1. Not only was the event popular, as each player would get many matches thanks to the tournament system, but we rose over $150 to go toward the club and sponsorship for our AUG teams. The AUG itself was great fun but also a huge success for USYDTT. The Men’s Team (Bird Chan, Swapnil Anam, Aaron Yap, Stephen Liu, and Mark Wu) managed a bronze in the men’s division two teams’ event. The tournament was marred in some respects by unfortunate seeding, and there were some teams that should have been in a different division, but this didn’t take away from the event in the end. The women scooped up both gold and silver in the women’s singles, to Sisi and Micky respectively. Sisi was clear favourite and won all her matches convincingly. Unfortunately rules prevented us from getting her to fill in for the men’s team. Micky on the other hand initially lost in the group stage, but went on later to defeat the same competitor she lost to (who

56 | UNI SYDNEY UNI & 2009 FITNESS 2009 CLUB REPORT SYDNEY SPORT & SPORT FITNESS ANNUAL REPORT

ended up getting the bronze medal), which was a fantastic effort. The girls were also partially (or even perhaps mostly in the case of Sisi) responsible for winning the gold (Sisi and Bird) and silver (Roxanne Phan and Swapnil) in the mixed doubles! Roxanne also managed to attain Green and Gold selection. The successes for USYDTT didn’t end at the AUG however. Sisi was also awarded a University Blue, helped by her successes at the AUG! Congratulations Sisi! We hope that next year will be just as good, perhaps even better than this year, not only results wise but also membership and member satisfaction-wise. As long as interest is there, we plan to have Peter Ma coaching more regularly, and hold a tournament sometime in the second half of the year. See you at the club! USYDTT Committee

Tae Kwon Do In 2009, the Sydney University Taekwondo Club (SUTC) saw the sad departure of the club instructor 5th Dan Master Zoo Yong Seo who taught the club since 2001.

He was a great coach who possessed a wealth of knowledge and strong international Taekwondo experience. Master Seo maintained an air of professionalism in every training class and over the last 8 years he helped to shape the club for a stronger and brighter future. In the 2nd Semester, the club introduced 7th Dan Master Jong Man Hong. He famously won the bantam weight division in the 1985 World Taekwondo Games held in London, he was the Korean national champion 5 times and he was also the former captain of the Korean National Taekwondo Team. Master Hong brings with him decades of valuable experience and will demonstrate to the all members of the club, who range from absolute beginners to high-level black belts, the strong and formidable way of Taekwondo. 2009 saw the return of the club camp which was not done in the last 4 years. The camp was popular and proved to be great fun for all that attended, and it turned out to be an excellent way to start the year before the long and arduous university semester. To the future SUTC committee, I would recommend camps be made a regular event as it is a brilliant way for members of the club to improve their skill and bond with their fellow peers. In the AUGs, the club came in overall 6th and although the 2009 team was smaller in number in comparison to the previous year, more gold medals were won this year.

These gold medals were proudly won by Xinyu (Maxim) Wang, George Vuong and Montana Clapton. Bronze medals were won by Hinson Yeung and Philip Huynh. Furthermore, Green and Gold selection was attained by Ki-Hyun Song and Ellie Frayne. Congratulations to all those that attended the AUGs and most especially I hope you all had a memorable experience. The club’s 2009 AUG campaign was a success and the club is grateful to Jason Liem who did an outstanding job as the AUG Team Manager. Finally, I would like to thank all the members of the SUTC who selflessly helped in their own way to shape the club in becoming what it is today. Your contributions over the year will not be forgotten and you all played a key part in what proved to be a tough and busy year. 2010 promises to be an awesome year, with big hopes and ambitions charged by the proud new 2010 SUTC President Jason Liem. So please, come in and join the SUTC for 2010, we promise not to kick you… hard. John Lee President

Tennis Continued growth in club membership resulted in increases in financial member contributions to SUSF and in the number of teams competing in the Metropolitan Grass Court Clubs Association (MGCCA) Badge and NSW Hardcourt Tennis Association (NSWHCTA) Inter-District competitions. The Tecnifibre Sydney University Open Grass Court Championships were held for the first time in 2009 from September 21-25. The event was a major success with over 35 entries received from top-line state and international competitors as well as university representative players, and significant support from sponsors who attended the finals at the Manning lawn courts. The inaugural Open Men’s Singles title was won by top seed Jurek Stasiak, who defeated No. 2 seed Marious Zelba (7/6 2/6 6/1) in the final. The Open Women’s Singles title was won by unseeded Lara Picone, who defeated No. 2 seed Carissa Ristevski (6/2 6/1) in the final. Touch Football The Monday Night competition has proved a great success this year. Our student league competition was completely filled during O-week, signing up over 100 competitors. Our winter competition saw 24 teams compete with about a dozen teams turned away due to lack of facilities. Nominations for our summer competition again reached capacity very quickly, and the decision to accept more teams into our competition was made by adding an extra time slot to allow for the extra teams. With the previous competition manager, Gary Reynolds, moving overseas, Pete Mossemenear took over managing the competition with the help of others which has been greatly appreciated. This year Main Campus sent both a men’s and women’s team to Eastern University Games which were managed by Tom and myself, with Cumberland campus sending a men’s, women’s and mixed team managed by Nick, Harry and Fiona. All teams braved the cold weather of Bathurst to compete in the three day tournament. The Cumberland women’s team achieved the best results coming fourth after losing their bronze medal match. Once again the Australian University Games were held on the Gold Coast. The club sent three teams with both

the men’s and women’s team competing in Division 1 and the mixed team competing in Division 2. All teams put in a great effort throughout the week, with the women’s team going down to an improved Monash team in the Bronze medal match. The teams were managed by Nick, Harry and I who all helped to ensure that a good week was had by all. The club started off this year with a superhero pub crawl through Newtown. This was a great opportunity to welcome many new faces into the club. Leading up to EUGs, the main campus teams held a BBQ at Bunnings warehouse in Mascot to raise funds for their trip. The day turned out to be very successful with about $1400 being raised. This is definitely something that the club will continue to do in the future. Once again, the club held their Annual Crab Racing fundraiser to help raise funds for the Australian University Games teams. The night was held at Heffron hall for the second year in a row. The night helped to raise just under $500 for the teams, which although not as much as the previous year, a fun night was had by all. Sydney University continues to provide a large number of players to Varsity, which consists of Sydney Uni, UTS and Macquarie University. This year has been a very successful year for varsity with the development of a second men’s team which competed in both the Vawdon and State Cup competitions.

As well as this, the Men’s A team moved up to First Division in the Vawdon Cup competition and narrowly missed out being crowned premiers. In the State Cup competition the boys went on to play in Open Men’s A competition which saw them matched against the top teams in the state. Although the boys didn’t come away with a win, each match they showed that Varsity is continuing to grow and develop as a strong club. A big thanks to coaches Gary Toohey, Paul Hickey and Andrew Lees for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. We hope to see the boys back next year to help Varsity continue to develop strongly as a club. Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their help and support throughout the year. With a lot of new faces within the club this year, many people have helped to continue the development and growth of the club. I look forward to the upcoming year, our 10th Anniversary, and hope that the club will continue to grow and develop. Kate ‘Nelly’ Gammel President

Ultimate Frisbee 2009 has been a very successful year for SUUFA, with a Silver medal at both the Australian University Games and Eastern University Games. Both teams were unlucky not to come home with Gold after sickness ravaged the EUGs team and the AUGs team were beaten by only a point in their final.

We had 7 Australian representatives at the Asian Championships Beach Ultimate (ACBU) in the Philippines in October, who also came home with a Silver medal. It was also another successful year for membership with an increase on 2008 and our biggest ‘Learn to Play’ session in the club’s history with nearly 100 attendees during O-week. This carried through to our weekly social events at our new sponsor, The Royal and our Annual Scavenger Hunt and Dinner. We also hosted the Sydney University IV (Intervarsity), which was a good fundraiser for the club. In 2010, we will be seeking to improve retention in the club by cementing new member’s commitment to both the social aspects and competitive play of Ultimate. This will include a revamped social calendar, a new sponsor and 2 tournaments, including the Sydney University IV plus subsidising our new members’ league fees. 2010 is our 15th Anniversary and so we will be producing new commemorative discs and hosting a showcase game between current players and our alumni. We will also be seeking to improve the publicity of our sport through a new and improved website, more visibility around campus and better stock material for interested students and non-students alike.

We will also be looking to finally bring home the Uni Games Gold this year in Perth after 2 close runner up finishes in 2 years, under the coaching guidance of Australian representative Dan Rule. In 2009, Brett Latham has been tireless in his promotion of our aims to grow the sport, increase its legitimacy and support and nourish the social side of our club. His administration, guidance and support have been instrumental in the successes of 2009 and he remains committed to helping the club in 2010. As the new President in 2010, I hope to expose our sport to even more players, cooperate with other clubs and societies who share our social ethic and continue our growth and success. Volleyball The Sydney Uni Volleyball Club (SUVC) has had a successful year on the court producing some very strong club, team and individual performances. Further to this, the club saw a growth in members, with its highest number of entries ever in the State Volleyball League (SVL) and a rejuvenated social competition run at Tempe. The Women’s Honours State League team was easily the standout of the year, winning both State Cup pre-season tournaments, Newcastle and Illawarra, as well as claiming both MVPs in these tournaments (Masha Abakumova and Gab Woodhouse). This form continued into SVL, with the team defending their 2008 title, with a dominating straight sets win in the final. As well as the women’s honours win, Sydney Uni had a number of very good results in the SVL with the Junior boys going one better than in 2008, claiming the championship, Men’s Division two claiming third, Women’s Juniors grabbing fourth and Men’s Honours struggling through a series of injuries and player movements to grasp 4th.

These results were enough for Sydney Uni to be awarded the NSW club championship for the second year in a row. Sydney Uni and UTS Volleyball clubs continued their joint venture for the National League in both the Women’s and Men’s Australian Volleyball League (WAVL and MAVL). The UTS-Sydney Uni WAVL team was unable to defend their 2008 title with many of the 2008 team finishing their volleyball career. With new coach Kristin Mock, and a very young but talented team, UTSSU fought strongly all season to narrowly miss out on the finals and finish fifth. Riddled with injuries, the men made a remarkable fight back after a slow start to the season, to push through to the finals and eventually finish fourth. The men’s Australian Uni Games team felt a very strong sense of déjà vu, finishing second after being beaten by QUT in the final for the third year in a row. The women finished sixth after a second at Eastern Uni Games in Bathurst. Sydney Uni had four players selected in the Green and Gold Merit teams – Adriana Amato, Victor Nguyen, Oliver Konakoff and Yaegan Doran, continuing a very successful year for individuals within the club.

Chris Todd, Kiel Briggs and Yaegan Doran were selected in the Australian University Team that competed in the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. The club had a number of players selected in various NSW representative teams that competed in the National Junior Championships in Queensland. Stef Lalic and Ed Walkley played in the U21 teams, Liam Watson, Craig Lowe, Josh Murphy and Kara Dennis played for the U19s and Ben Lalic, Kate Golding and Phoebe Foldi played for the U17s. Liam Watson also played for the NSWCHS team that competed in the Trans-Tasman tournament, culminating in selection in the Australian Trans–Tasman team that played New Zealand. Two Sydney University bred players, Craig Lowe and Jordan Young, were awarded scholarships to the Australian Institute of Sport, with Craig Lowe being selected in the Australian Junior team. To cap it off, Adriana Amato and Yaegan Doran were both awarded Blues for their achievements in the year. With the growth of the club and so many talented young players coming through the ranks, 2010 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for the club. Yaegan Doran Treasurer

Water Polo – Men In 2009 the club had some mixed competition results but continued strong player development and representation at State and National Levels. In addition to player representation, club executives (Greg Turner, Nathan Thomas, Trent Franklin) continue to be involved as Directors of both NSW Water Polo and Australian Water Polo. After a disappointing 2008 season the National League team once again qualified for the Finals Series in 6th position. After welcoming home both Sam McGregor and Rob Maitland from their overseas club commitments the Lions were extremely competitive with their four games being decided by a margin of only 4 goals. Ultimately however the team finished the finals in 6th place. The 1st Division teams achieved good results in the 2008/09 Summer season with the M2 team placing a creditable 3rd and Clayton Whittaker being the competition’s top goal scorer at 18 years old. While the M3 team consisted of a mixture of juniors and seasoned veterans (including the formidable Nathan Thomas who was the competition’s top goal scorer), they finished the regular season as Minor Premiers but unfortunately fell

at the final hurdle losing the Grand Final to the Balmain Tigers in a close encounter. The M1 team were Minor Premiers in the 2009 Winter season winning a hard fought grand final 8-7 against Drummoyne. In the 2009 Summer season the team had a good build up to the National League competition with 3rd place after once again finishing the regular season as Minor Premiers. In the 2009 Winter season the M5 team also finished in 1st position with an 8-3 win against the Blue Mountains club. During the year the Junior teams had some good results highlighted by the U18 team finishing in 2nd place in the 2008/09 Summer season and the U14A team winning the 2009 Winter Grand Final 4-2 against UNSW. The 2009 Winter season also saw the U14Bs being the first team to come from the newly formed Academy program playing their first season of polo. The future of the Club continues to look bright with a number of senior and junior players achieving representative honours and being part of the NSWIS scholarship and development programs. Once again the club was represented in the Australian Open team by Thomas Whalan (Captain), Rob Maitland (Captain - World Uni Games) and Sam McGregor while Trent Franklin (Olympic Vice Captain) decided to have a year off representative duties. Nathan Cargill was also successful in gaining a professional playing contract in France for the 1st time for the 2009/2010 season.

Lachlan Hollis (captain) and Scott Nicholson were selected in the Australian Junior team that attended training tournaments in Europe while Jeremy Davie was selected in the Australian Youth team that competed at the World Championships. Ben Goldstein was also selected as goal keeper for the Australian Schoolboys team. There were also a number of players selected in U14 and U13 NSW Talented Athlete Development Squads. At the U20 National Championships Lachlan Hollis was once again selected as Captain of the Blues team (also including Ben Goldstein) who defended their title. Scott Nicholson, Clayton Whittaker and Lintyn Basha were selected in the NSW Waratah team who finished in 4th position and Scott achieved the honour of top goal scorer for the Championships. The club was also represented at the U18 National Championships by Lintyn Basha, Jayden Basha and Ben Goldstein in the Blues team who defended their title and Scott Duchatel in his 1st representative selection in the Waratah team. An outstanding achievement was gained by Anthony Hrysanthos who was selected as goal keeper in the U14 (Captain) and U16 NSW teams as well as the U18 & U20 NSW squads. Anthony played in 1st Division for the first time in the 2009/2010 season, deputising for Ben Goldstein (recovering from double hip operations)

in the M2 team and being a regular of the M3 team. At the tender age of only 13 years old Anthony is considered by many good judges as being a one of the best players seen in a number of years. The club achieved some good results at the NSW Club Championships highlighted by the U20 team who finished in 2nd position after leading Drummoyne, the championship favourites, by 3 goals in the 3rd quarter. The team fought all the way to the end but simply ran out of energy after only finishing a tough semifinal against Wests an hour and half earlier.

Other creditable results were the U18 team finishing 3rd, and the U23 team finishing 4th in the inaugural tournament for this age group. Also at the Uni Games the Sydney Uni team were unable to defend their title and finished in 2nd position behind the Macquarie Uni side. In 2009 the club also completely redeveloped their website which was overseen by Nathan Thomas and Jonathan Linn. The Academy program also continued to develop under the direction of Joanne

Basha (Vice president – Juniors) and Nathan Thomas (ex Australian Captain) and has seen an influx of new junior players and elite training for existing juniors. Without the support of Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness and other sponsors the club would not be able to continue in striving to develop the pre-eminent Water Polo program in the country. David Whittaker Vice President – Seniors

Water Polo – Women National League had a good start to the season but faded at the end, badly affected by injuries at crucial times. Three girls were selected to attend world student games in Serbia; Keesja Gofers, Melissa Hammond, and Joanne Whitehorn. The team were a young team and finished fifth.

We continued to have large numbers in the juniors with an U/14, two U/16, two U/18 teams as well as two 3rd grade, a 4th and 5th grade and 2nd and first grade. Sandy Grant has been invaluable coordinating the grade teams. Teams have entered state championships at U14, U16 and U18 levels and we have had many girls selected in state squads. Leanne McKee our secretary was recently awarded a university Gold for her services to the club. We also have a new National League coach John Davie and the girls have already been in training. Yvette Higgins is having a break and is hopefully able

to play more. Rebecca Angas our junior coach is also having an extended break. The club has also had several fundraising efforts as well as running a competition at MLC. Sue Waight our treasurer has also been invaluable. I would also thank all our referees and coaches and parents for their help as well as the pool staff and John Moloney and to SUSF for all their support and funding. Sue Waight Treasurer

Waterski & Wakeboard Jo Robertson established a Waterskiing Club at Cumberland College in 1990 and it was adopted by the then, Sydney University Women’s Sports Association.

This means that we celebrate our twentieth anniversary this year, and what a rollercoaster ride it has been. Over our history, we have produced a couple of national champions both male and female, and whilst we are fiercely proud of their achievements, our real strength lies in being a recreational club. To this end, we have taught, and entertained in excess of 1,000 members in our twenty years of existence, and I would like to bet that we have introduced at least a third of those to waterskiing and wakeboarding.

our twentieth year, we have completed addressing all of our issues and can look forward to at least another twenty years of providing first class equipment, tuition and good old fashioned fun to the University and wider community. We start our twentieth year with a great committee and a new set of Challenges. We plan to get wakeboarding at AUG’s and our long term goal now that our future is assured, is to replace our current beautiful Supra boat in the next two years to assure trouble free riding for years to come.

Equally important, we have introduced a large number of them to each other. Our club has a huge social scene and continues to run camps, houseboat trips and inter varsity comps and events. We have survived many years of trials including VSU and heavily restrictive regulations placed on us by Maritime Authorities. It is fitting then that in this

We are looking for sponsors to partner with us to help us achieve these goals and promote the sport, the University and the Club. Bring it on!

The club is continuing to be lead by Australia’s number one coach, Leonid Zaslavski, who has produced yet again outstanding wrestlers. Truly, without Leonid the club would not be able to enjoy the success it is enjoying on the wrestling mat.

The year ahead This year we are aiming to increase the membership base, as well as add another training day (currently there are two days per week that the club trains). We are also developing strategies to improve our financial position. Elements of our strategy include fund raising through all available sources, such as government grants, membership fees, classical fundraising activities and donations.

Giles Richardson President

Wrestling In the past year the Sydney University Wrestling Club has undergone a minor face lift. First of all the committee has changed, namely a new president (Jahangir Shagaev), a new treasurer (Alexey Sorokin) have been voted in at the Extraordinary General Meeting held in the later half of the year.

A special note must go to Jayden Lawrence, who is the current state and national champion in his age group and weight category. Without a doubt, Jayden is Australia’s best chance for its first Olympic wrestling medal. The club’s other star performer is Nathan Hallaway, who is also a state and national champion in his age group and weight category. Both wrestlers have led from the front in terms of their performance, as well as their discipline on and off the wrestling mat. The administrative side of things has also been positive. The club applied for a state government grant, to cover some ongoing expenses, such as petrol, as well make minor capital acquisitions. The grant was received, and will go a long way to improving the financial standing of the club.

64 | UNI SYDNEY UNI & 2009 FITNESS 2009 CLUB REPORT SYDNEY SPORT & SPORT FITNESS ANNUAL REPORT

Our ultimate goal is to increase participation and produce world class wrestlers. With Australia’s best coach, and Australia’s best female wrestler (Kyla Bremmer) being part of the club, it is inevitable that the Sydney University Wrestling club will be one of the best in the nation, if not the world, in the near future.
