Sometimes things look good on paper but lose their sparkle when seen in the cold light of day. The empty hotel swimming pool in a glossy travel brochure inviting you for a dip, compared to the crowded reality, or the much£ hyped winter wonderland promising reindeer rides, compared to an emaciated donkey with strap-on antlers limping through slushy puddles. The more impressive the object of desire seems on paper, the greater the disappointment potential.

The greater the expectation, the bigger the fall back down to reality.

LOCAL MPs

As a magazine publisher, making things look good on paper is, quite literally, my job. Articles are edited for clarity and style, photos are (where appropriate) enhanced for visual satisfaction and adverts are set to create awareness of brands. The final package – printed, stapled and trimmed – is our own glistening pool, an invite to readers to take a dip in all that South Woodford has to offer. So yes, we do raise expectations and we do ramp up the disappointment potential. But in my experience, South Woodford rarely disappoints.

With the local cultural calendar filled with Woodford Festival activities, it’s that time again when the community’s collective expectations are raised and Woodford’s disappointment potential is at it’s highest. As we all anticipate the laughter, delight, taste, sounds, images and intrigue promised by the return of the aforementioned festivities, this publication has no hesitation in adding to those expectations. After all, these pages only exist in the first place because South Woodford consistently delivers on its promises. So, while my job may be to make things look good on paper, the real challenge is making these pages look as good as reality.

‘There But Not There’: local youngsters will be the voice of Woodford’s WWI soldiers

PUMPKIN FEST SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER 2018

Local soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War will be honoured at an event in South Woodford this October.

“Using information researched by local resident Adrian Lee, a small number of soldiers will be given a voice through words, pictures and music. They will represent the many soldiers whose names are on memorial plaques throughout Woodford,” said Viveca Dutt, a trustee of the Woodford Memorial Hall, which is hosting the ‘There But Not There’ presentation. Young people from

St Mary’s Church, local schools and cadet groups will provide the voices of these soldiers, many of whom will have been the same age when they enlisted and died. Most of Woodford’s casualties during the Great War were those who volunteered between 1914 and 1916 and a stone tablet at St Mary’s Church commemorates 73 local men who lost their lives in the conflict. The evening event will take place on 8 October from 7.45pm (tickets: £8, including refreshments).

The Woodford Historical Society (WHS) launches its new season on 17 September with an illustrated talk on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. “I will remind people of the history of the abandoned GER workshops and Temple Mills railway sidings, followed by a look at a littleknown master plan for the area, which became the main thrust for the Olympic bid,” said WHS president Peter Lawrence.

The local branch of the Women’s Institute will be learning about the life and career of Agatha Christie on 17 September. “Geoff Bowden will tell the fascinating story of Agatha’s life, including her famous disappearance in 1926. And don’t worry, he won’t give away any of the endings!” said a spokesperson for The Woodford Wonder Women.

The presentation will take place at Woodford Memorial Hall in South Woodford from 7.30pm (visitors: £5 donation).

The South Woodford Society has nominated George Lane in the Great British High Street awards.

The annual competition – run by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government – offers a £10,000 prize for a local community project. “As we all know, South Woodford is a wonderful place to live and work, and the residents enjoy the community and village atmosphere of the area, particularly our main shopping street, George Lane. The South Woodford Society wants to encourage individual shops and new eateries to allow our high street to thrive and to enhance and protect our local spaces, which is why we have nominated George Lane,” said Louise Burgess. A shortlist will be put to a public vote in October, with the winner announced in November.

Work on a long-awaited TfL improvement project at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout started this summer. New safety measures at what is one of Redbridge’s busiest junctions will include signal-controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings and wider footpaths. During the upgrade, temporary changes will be in place, including diversions and lane closures impacting the A406 and A1400. Bus routes will also be affected and some pedestrian crossings temporarily closed. “Our plans to install signalised crossings on all arms of the roundabout and widen the pavements will reduce road danger and contribute to the mayor’s vision zero target: nobody killed or seriously injured on London’s roads by 2041,” said a TfL spokesperson. Roof repairs at Woodford Memorial Hall

Two free drop-ins for all experiencing loss

Repairs to the roof of Woodford Memorial Hall – which was built in 1902 – have taken place over the summer. The work follows a series of fundraising events held throughout the year and grants from the All Churches Trust, the Pilgrim Trust and the Veolia Environmental Trust. “The Trustees of the hall have been working hard over the last few years to ensure it continues to serve the Woodford community for another 100 years. In 2015 a new dance floor was installed in the front hall. In 2016 repairs were made to the roof at the east end and the ornamental flèche.

This year, the north side of the roof over the back hall has been retiled, and work continues on the section of the roof over the stage… Our priority is to keep the weather out so that people can come in,” said St Mary’s Rector Ian Tarrant.

Heatwave devastating for community gardens

The recent hot weather has devastated the community flowerbeds on the bridge over the A406 in South Woodford.

Despite the best efforts of the South Woodford Community Gardeners – who tend to these raised enclosures as well as the patches along George Lane – the heatwave has seen the loss of many plants. “Most of what we nurtured through the winter and spring has not survived. We would therefore welcome more contributions of plants,” said Jane Turner, who leads the group.

More volunteer gardeners are also needed to help maintain the sites. “Although we were originally a U3A group (mainly retired people), we welcome anyone who would like to join us. No gardening experience is needed… We meet mainly on a Thursday or Friday morning.”

Local classic car owners invited to display vehicles

Classic car owners in the area are once again invited to show off their vintage automobiles at this year’s Wanstead Festival (free; booking required). “The annual event has often featured a display of classic cars and we are keen to encourage more residents who own such vehicles to take part,” said Kirstie Leonard, a Vision RCL events officer. Redbridge Drama Centre will be hosting its annual open day on 15 September, offering visitors of all ages the opportunity to take part in a range of free activities. As well as drama lessons, residents are also invited to learn circus skills and take part in a green screen filming session at the venue on Churchfields, South Woodford.

Local author launches creative writing group

Local resident and author Anne Cassidy will be launching a new creative writing group at Woodford Green Library this October. “When I started writing I didn’t know a single other person who wrote. It was only when I joined a writers’ group that I found like-minded people,” said Anne, who has published over 40 novels for teenagers, most notably Looking for JJ, which was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal in 2005. The group, which will hold its first meeting on 2 October from 6pm to 7.30pm, will meet fortnightly and will be a chance for unpublished writers of various experiences to come together and work on their craft. “I am keen to give writers a reason to write,” added Anne, who became a full-time writer in 2000 following a career in banking and teaching.

A number of local artists – many of whom have presented their work in previous editions of the South Woodford Village Gazette – will be welcoming visitors into their homes and studios this October as part of the Woodford Festival. Mosaic artist Amanda Whittle (81 Monkhams Avenue; 7 and 14 October from 12 noon to 5pm) will show work made from a variety of materials, including vintage china. Painter Ged Rumak (87 Crescent Road; 7 October from 12 noon to 5pm) will be displaying portraits and sculptor Peter Butcher (47 Derby Road; 13 October from 1pm to 5pm) will be showing creations in his garden from his 45 years of work. A photography exhibition will be held at Wanstead House from 6 to 19 October to celebrate the Woodford & Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary. “On 9 October 1893 the Woodford Photographic Society was formed [the Wanstead connection was added at a later date]. This makes us one of the oldest photographic clubs in the UK,” said David Tyrrell. The group meets on the first and third Monday of the month at the same venue (first three meetings are free). Dental practice raises over £2k for Stroke Association

Dr Malik and his team from Improve Your Smile at Woodford House Dental Practice presented representatives from the Stroke Association with a cheque for £2,170 in August. It follows a charity coffee morning and raffles held at the practice earlier in the year, which is now set to become an annual event, raising awareness of the links between oral health and stroke risk. “I was overwhelmed by our patients’ kindness and also the multitude of amazing raffle prizes that were donated by local companies,” said Practice Manager Moona Malik.

“A stroke can happen to anyone, but there are steps you can take to minimise your risk, including looking after your oral health.” A free blood pressure check event is also being planned for the autumn at the practice, located at 162 High Road, Woodford Green. Call 020 8504 2704

Three of the foremost proponents of the British folk music scene will come together at Redbridge Drama Centre for the Woodford Festival this October. Lisa Knapp – who has won great critical acclaim since her debut album in 2007 won Mojo magazine’s Folk Album of the Year award – will be joined

by Proper English (formerly members of Ticklers’ Jam), a trio of musicians who celebrate music and song from English rural tradition on melodeon, fiddle and cello. Peta Webb and Ken Hall – who have been at the forefront of performing folk music for many years – complete the line-up. “They will present a varied programme that is sure to delight both traditionalists and modernists,” said organiser Ken Lees. A local social enterprise is aiming to build intergenerational relationships and promote the importance of civic pride in communities through collectively curated murals. “Unity Walls will bring help to maintain an elevated sense of community spirit as the regeneration continues throughout a number of boroughs across London,” said a spokesperson. As well as live demonstrations at the Wanstead Festival on 16 September, there are also plans for promotion of the initiative at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout in November and for murals to be painted at Snaresbrook and Seven Kings stations next year. “We are interested in collaborating with photographers and filmmakers and we are looking for a graphic designer to create a logo, too.”

Black History Month 2018: remembering Derek B, the Woodford rap star Redbridge Museum in Ilford will celebrate the life of former Woodford resident Derek B this October as part of Black History Month. Derek – who became one of the first British rap stars – was born in Woodford to Trinidadian nurse Jenny Boland.

He grew up in South Woodford surrounded by a large musical family and attended Churchfields Primary School. Derek always loved music, but it was while at Redbridge College in the early 1980s that his career began.

He started a mobile disco unit and through this played in venues like Mortimers in South Woodford, Faces in Gants Hill and Bentley’s in Camden. Derek also became a regular on pirate radio station Kiss FM. Around this time he attended a fancy dress party in Chigwell and, being a snappy dresser, he went in his usual clothes. When one of the party goers asked him what his costume was, Derek replied: “I’ve come as the only black man in Chigwell!” Derek moved to America in the mid-1980s and got involved in the rising rap scene there. In 1988 he scored a top 20 hit with the single Good Grove. On the back of this success, he became the first

British rapper to appear on Top of the Pops and on the cover of Smash Hits magazine. Derek died at the young age of 44 in 2009.

Derek B’s records – as well as photographs from his childhood in Woodford – will be on display for the first time at Redbridge Museum from 2 October to 29 December. Derek’s stepfather, Jim Ives, will also be giving a free talk at the museum about Derek’s life on 17 October from 6.30pm.

The Wanstead Society and the South Woodford Society have joined forces to raise awareness of and take action over the litter problem at Eagle Pond in Snaresbrook. Scott Wilding reports.

ost of us have seen, or heard, about the BBC’s series Blue Planet. This groundbreaking programme highlighted the link between the plastics we throw away, which then enter the oceans, and the damage they do to our wildlife.

We have our own blue planet on our doorstep. Eagle Pond, off Snaresbrook Road, like all wet habitats in the area, has suffered this summer as a result of the long dry spell, low oxygen levels and litter. Just like the turtles and whales in the oceans, the local wildlife suffers just as much with the plastics and litter that enter the ponds here, or in Wanstead Park.

We all need to take steps to ensure wildlife thrives and has a plastic-free life…

That’s why the Wanstead Society and the South Woodford Society are working with local people, the council and the City of London to highlight this issue and promote a three-step approach to removing this waste.

1. Get the public to take their litter home Unless we all take responsibility for where we live, we can never cure the root cause of this problem.

Just take your litter home with you and recycle it if you can.

Most responsible people do just that. But we hope that by raising awareness of what discarded plastic does to our local wildlife, those that

don’t can understand what happens. Some plastics never biodegrade, and if they get digested by fish, swans and other birds, they cause them pain and can ultimately kill them. By taking litter home, we not only make where we live a better place, but help local wildlife thrive as well.

2. Action days to clean up the ponds Eagle Pond is owned by the City of London and is their responsibility to maintain.

The Wanstead Society and the South Woodford Society have offered to work with local people and the council to help clean the site and our first action day took place on 1 September. Although this will help in the short term, it’s only a small sticking plaster unless we can cure the root problem.

3. Improved cleansing and bin facilities along Snaresbrook Road We are working with Redbridge Council to ensure the surrounding areas are clean. With the help of Councillor Blackman of Wanstead Village ward, we aim to ensure the surrounding roads have sufficient bin provision. The council can do

little to the pond, but we can ensure the surrounding areas are kept litter-free to prevent litter blowing into the water, which they have promised to do.

We are lucky to have so much green space and wetland wildlife in Wanstead and South Woodford, but we all need to take steps to ensure it thrives and has a plastic-free life. We can’t directly ensure the Pacific or Atlantic are 100% waste-free, but together we can make a real difference to our local wildlife, which is just as important.

Festival An evening of close-up magic at The Cricketers is just one of the many free and community-spirited events taking place this October as part of the Woodford Festival.

Anny Wortley-Millek introduces nine days of fun and culture

A

fter a year’s absence (the event is now biennial), the nine-day Woodford Festival is happening again in October and will take place throughout the greater Woodford and South Woodford areas in numerous locations and venues.

From its humble beginnings in 2008 (yes, already 10 years ago!), this community festival has grown in size and fame and is now truly a great showcase of the artistic talents of local individuals and groups.

Woodfordians and visitors will be totally spoilt for choice…

Once again, the Woodford Festival’s organisers are amazed by the community spirit in Woodford: so many local clubs, organisations and associations are eager to participate again and are giving their time and talents freely for this important community celebration.

This year, we have secured the Sir James Hawkey Hall, a centrally located venue that will be used to start things off and draw attention to this great community event, with an opening day extravaganza

on 6 October, to which all are invited. At the time of writing, the details for this opening day event are being finalised but what we can say already is that it will be an entire exciting day of fun events, all wrapped up in one great location. There will be – among other activities – music performances, an art and craft show, a barn dance, a film show and a demonstration by a local organic baker! With so many different things happening, there will surely be something to suit everyone’s taste.

When visiting the Hawkey Hall, you are only a few steps away from Woodford Fire Station, which will also be holding an open day as part of the launch.

This has always been a magnet for children of all ages, eager for a chance to sit in a fire engine and watch all the fire and rescue demonstrations. There will also be important fire safety advice.

The fun does not end there.

The other days in our nine-day festival are steadily filling up.

Also on offer will be walks and talks, an arts trail, close-up magic, cultural events in churches and other places of worship, theatre productions, art exhibitions, poetry readings, a film screening, beer festivals, pub quizzes and yoga and keep-fit classes.

Music in all its forms will be well represented: jazz bands, organ recitals, choral concerts, classical music, opera performances, ‘heavy metal’ sessions in the form of bell-ringing in the local church, free singing lessons and rock and pop music will all be there for the taking.

Local schools have promised their support and will once again take part with a variety of events.

Woodfordians and visitors will be totally spoilt for choice and will certainly find events to their liking.

This year, we will make more use of social media to advertise our festival and we are working on finalising details for our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

We already have a great line-up of events and, as the list grows, we will start publishing these, so keep an eye on the various accounts we hold on social media and the Woodford Festival Association website to make sure you don’t miss a thing.

There is often a misconception that only 11+ tutors can help students achieve 11+ success. In fact, there are plenty of ways parents can support their child at home, says Kumon instructor Peter O’Donnell

T

here are several ways parents can help their child prepare for the 11+ from home. Here are six areas to focus on.

1. Get them familiar with the style of questions While a child will be used to arithmetic and English comprehension questions from completing their school work, they may not be used to the comprehension style or worded maths questions common throughout the 11+. Likewise, verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions will be new to them.

The best way to prepare for these is to expose your child to what they may look like by looking at example questions.

2. Look over practice questions There are many 11+ example questions available for free

online and practice workbooks can be purchased from all high street book retailers. Look for workbooks that contain the answers and explanations, such as how a problem was calculated or the rationale for a verbal reasoning response.

3. Make learning fun Play games to encourage their critical and logical thinking, such as spot the difference and sudoku. Develop their spatial awareness and understanding of how shapes interconnect with jigsaws and construction toys like Meccano and Lego.

Or draw shapes on a piece of paper and get your child to draw their mirror image, using a mirror to check the results, or cut them out and fold in half to see how they look.

4. Encourage regular reading Wider reading will help your

child gain a strong grasp of vocabulary. Children who read regularly and broadly, and who can comprehend an instruction and example, should be able to cope with verbal reasoning questions.

5. Plan preparations wisely Factor in time for breaks and periods of respite where they can enjoy their hobbies or see friends. Avoid last-minute preparation by using a little and often approach.

6. Private tuition Private tuition is, of course, always an option to help children prepare. A good tutor will give them a solid grounding in the academic and work skills needed to tackle 11+ exam questions.

Such skills will include maths, comprehension ability, working under timed conditions, stamina, speed, accuracy and an ability to think deeply and tackle unseen, advanced work.

TALK GROUP TALK #11 GROUP TALK GROUP In the 11th of a series of articles looking at local community groups, Rosemary Hawkins talks about the WEA’s ongoing Egyptology course

“I

see wondrous things,” Howard Carter replied when he first peered into Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. In 1972, I marvelled at some of those ‘wondrous things’ at a special exhibition at the British Museum and 30 years later I visited the tomb and was mesmerized by the 3,000-year-old paintings on the walls.

Knowing nothing about Ancient Egypt, when I discovered the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) ran courses in Egyptology at Wanstead House, I enrolled, never realising how many different aspects of the civilisation can be studied.

Led by very experienced tutors, over the years the classes of about 12 have studied different pharaohs, temples and tombs, art, textiles, literature, Egypt’s contacts with the Near East, its place in the Bible and the daily

lives of the villagers who built the tombs to name but a few topics. All have been supported by visual aids of sites and artefacts and museum visits.

The Ancient Egyptians recorded everything, from historical events to laundry lists, so there are plenty of texts to peruse in translation. While I’ve been studying the subject, new finds have been made which have changed people’s theories about events, one being the causes of Tutankhamun’s death, so there are still many more wonderful things to discover.

Who knows, another tomb like Tutankhamun’s may be found.

am proud to have been elected as a Conservative councillor for South Woodford. I had been picking up casework and issues regularly in the years running up to election, and since then, it has been no different.

Most of the work stems from chronic mismanagement of council services from the administration in the townhall.

We are holding the administration to account on all the issues…

South Woodford is in the forgotten corner of the borough.

The streets are getting dirtier, pot holes are endemic and hedges go unpruned. The administration is getting the basics wrong while spending money on vanity projects elsewhere.

We are hearing time and time again that rubbish, recycling and green garden waste is not being collected from homes, and when they are collected, the council are leaving streets littered with rubbish. Please ensure this is reported both directly to the council and your Conservative councillors. We are holding the administration to account on all these issues, but residents are our eyes and ears on the ground.

One of the main concerns over the past couple months was the council’s decision to build a three-storey, 30-unit modular development under the A406 flyover next to Charlie Brown’s Roundabout. There was a complete lack of consultation, and Conservative councillors spoke against the plans to house some of the most vulnerable in society in one of the most polluted areas in London in a development which did not meet the minimum requirements for housing.

aving lived in South Woodford for so many years, I am tremendously proud of our area and what makes it special.

I am also very proud to have been elected by you as the first Labour councillor for the new South Woodford ward. As your councillor, I am committed to working hard for everyone in South Woodford. In particular, I will always stand up for the most vulnerable members of the community.

An ambitious target of a 50% recycling rate in the borough by 2022…

Until 2014, Redbridge Council had never had a Labour majority, but this May, local people elected Labour members to 51 of the 63 seats on the council. During the election campaign, I helped deliver a copy of the Labour manifesto to every home in the area. That manifesto set out our priorities for the next four years and it is worth highlighting some of those here.

I want to enhance and protect the green spaces in our area, as well as reducing pollution and cracking down on environmental crime. I want South Woodford to be an even better place to live.

Many local residents have told me how concerned they are about pollution and air quality.

The council will be tackling air pollution by working with local

schools to create ‘clean air’ zones.

We will also work to roll out these zones around our parks and children’s play areas. Residents with electric cars will park for free in resident permit zones, and we will also increase cycling routes and continue developing our cycle renting scheme, and more.

The council has an ambitious target of a 50% recycling rate in the borough by 2022. I support the work of enforcement officers cracking down on environmental blights, such as illegal dumping and vandalism, to help us create a cleaner, greener borough.

In our manifesto, we pledged to crack down on fly-tipping and we are now the toughest council in London on this issue and on environmental crime – we’ve already issued over 700 £400 fines to those committing offences.

In addition, creating a cleaner area is one of my biggest priorities. Millions will be invested each year to keep our streets clean, removing litter and cracking down on fly-tipping, graffiti and flyposting.

In recent years, national government has cut 48p in every pound that Redbridge Council used to receive. Despite that, the council continues to work hard to ensure all our residents can realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential.

I am sure many of you will join me in supporting the council to achieve these goals.

Margaret Pepper is one of many artists taking part in this year’s Woodford Festival. Here, the local painter explains what led her to produce what is often controversial work

I

have been asked to contribute some thoughts on the Woodford Festival art trail, in which I began taking part around 2008.

To make some sense of my art, I need to explain my background. I was born male in 1944, lived near Soho until 1967 when I moved to Woodford and got married. The first time I ever painted anything was around 1976, a period in my life when everything went wrong at the same time, and I found painting gave me a form of at least partial escape from my troubles.

I must say, I am surprised at the amount of talent in our neighbourhood…

By the beginning of 2002, I suddenly found myself alone, and being trans promptly took control. I had sex reassignment surgery in March 2004. By 2005 I had retired from work and decided to paint a picture for my mantelpiece. I suddenly found I was able to work in a much more fluid way that saw my creative energy explode as never before.

Within weeks, I painted anything that came into my mind, and I now look back and realise how good painting was as therapy – a way of expressing one’s thoughts and feelings. Soon, I began to exhibit my paintings at parties

and nightclubs, and then cafes and restaurants in Soho.

By 2009 I became involved with the Royal Free Hospital and sat on one of their consultants’ group committees, where we produced an NHS staff booklet. I was asked to use my paintings to illustrate this publication. Later, I was told this was reprinted 1.3 million times. About the same time, I got to know some filmmakers, and took part in a film entitled Latecomers, which appeared on Vimeo and was also shown in various cinemas in the London area. Since then, I have given talks to invited audiences, generally around east London.

I had made it my habit to visit as many art galleries as possible, and to talk to the dealers, who told me to get into social media, something I was initially reluctant to do as I felt it rather adolescent. But about a year ago (with the help of a friend who’s a computer expert), I began to go on Twitter, and was taken aback at the reaction I got from people who feel their opinions count for nothing and that they themselves feel powerless and forgotten.

Many of my recent artworks may be considered controversial, but I make no apology for any offence caused.

In a way, this brings us to what is the whole purpose of art in the first place. Is it to inspire, educate, amuse or, as I feel, move the soul? Why paint a picture when you can simply take a photograph? Surely, the aim of an artist is to express that which cannot be photographed in the normal fashion, and perhaps push boundaries into new territories not yet explored?

I must state I am constantly seeking that purely original idea no one has yet come up with in art.

To return to 2008, when the Woodford Festival idea came up, I was only too eager to join in, and have taken part ever since.

I must say, I am surprised at the amount of talent in our neighbourhood.

Not just in the visual arts, but pottery, music and drama, and also the number of diverse venues that take part, such as local churches and shops, as well as people opening up their private residences.

This year, I intend to see some new artists, and wish them all the best of luck in expressing their ideas.

Art is much harder than it looks!

Changes for life In the first of a series of articles looking at simple lifestyle changes you can make to improve your health, Andy and Amanda Rushton talk about sleep (or lack thereof ) and stress

S

leep is essential for the body to repair, improve immunity and reduce stress, meaning we wake more relaxed, energised and crave less sugar. Conversely, a lack of sleep can lead to fatigue, poor work performance, poor food choices and an increased risk of illness.

In our 24/7 world, we are constantly bombarded with different stresses. Whether it be work, family or exams, we find it increasingly difficult to ‘turn off’. All this has an adverse effect on our sleep and therefore health. Current research says we sleep in 90-minute cycles, each containing a light-, deep- and dream-sleep period. Ideally, we should wake naturally at the same time each day, but this can be a challenge with kids and weekend lie-ins. To achieve this, consider matching your sleep

time with completed 90-minute cycles – a 6.30am wake-up means trying to be asleep by 11pm, for example. Aim for five 90-minute cycles in a 24-hour period.

You should also create the right environment for sleeping. Limit artificial light in the bedroom, remove the TV and avoid electronic devices in the hour before bed, as these can emit blue light which confuses the brain into thinking it’s daytime.

Stress presents in many ways: physically, emotionally or even chemically. Ultimately, it’s our body feeling under threat. In days gone by, physical stress was hunting for dinner. The short burst of cortisol (the body’s main stress hormone) would be used up and the body would then regain balance. In our modern lives, we now feel this level of stress for prolonged periods with

no way of releasing it, meaning there is increased fatigue and a difficulty to relax and recover.

Physical activity can be fantastic for releasing our fight or flight emotions that cortisol creates.

Consider boxing, sparring or high-intensity workouts to recreate the ‘fight’ feeling.

Running, cycling and swimming can help with the ‘flight’ to create a sense of balance and recovery.

Achieving daily calm is ideal. Try taking 15 minutes for yourself

each day to relax: an early morning walk in the fresh air, a cup of tea in your favourite café or just indulging in a quiet read on the sofa. Meditation can also be useful. If you find yourself feeling anxious, take 10 slow, deep breaths and exhale fully to create inner calm.

Finally, spend time with loved ones or friends who give you joy. Laughing is a great way to reduce cortisol and free the mind. Happy days.

TALK GROUP TALK #12 GROUP TALK GROUP In the 12th of a series of articles looking at local clubs, Roz Petrou talks about Woodford Green Library’s reading and creative writing groups

W

e have two reading groups that meet monthly at Woodford Green Library. The groups are friendly and informal, meeting to discuss the chosen book of the month.

If you enjoy reading a wide variety of books, then drop in to one of our sessions and take a look. One of our regular members had this to say about the group: “The beauty of a reading group is that you often read a book which you may not have chosen but that turns out to be a real gem. You find that you read books more carefully, knowing you are going to be asked your thoughts on them afterwards. It is interesting to hear other people’s opinions of a book and see things from a completely different perspective”. The evening group meets on the second Thursday of the month from 6.30pm

to 7.30pm and the afternoon group on the third Thursday from 2pm to 3pm.

Another literary-related group is our Creative Writers’ Group.

Local author Anne Cassidy is co-ordinating this new group for adults starting on 2 October from 6pm to 7.30pm. We are hoping for beginners as well as those who have been writing for a while. We will be working on writing fiction novels and short stories. We’ll also look at ways to turn an autobiography into fiction. There will be writing activities and discussions in each session, which will be held fortnightly.

Unhappy people in a happy world The World Health Organisation has predicted that by 2020, depression will be at epidemic levels worldwide, closely followed by chronic anxiety and loneliness.

Support bereaved parents Stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands is seeking local volunteers to help establish a new support group in Woodford. Area coordinator Rose Abrehart explains what is needed

found out that I had lost my baby just before Christmas. There are no words to describe the utter despair I felt.” Those are the words of a parent who was helped by Sands.

We need people prepared to become part of a committee, including a chair, treasurer and secretary as well as befrienders.

Not all committee members have to be bereaved parents…

The chair helps the committee work together as a team, following the aims of Sands and ensuring the group works within the Sands constitution.

The treasurer’s role would be especially suitable to anyone with financial acumen as well as an interest or empathy with our work. Not all committee members have to be bereaved parents. As long as you have an empathy and interest in our work, we would urge you to get involved.

Sands is the leading stillbirth and neonatal death charity in the UK. We work nationally to reduce baby deaths through promoting better maternity care and funding research.

We have a programme of training and a wide range of resources designed to support professionals to improve the bereavement care they provide following the death of a baby, and we provide a comprehensive bereavement support service both nationally through our helpline and locally through around 100 regional support groups based across the UK. Losing your much longedfor baby late in pregnancy or soon after birth is the most awful trauma any parent can experience. A whole future is taken away from that family.

Sadly, this happens only too often. Currently, 15 babies a day die in the weeks before or just after birth. Sands aims to care for those families with practical and emotional support for as long as they need it.

We are currently working with Haven House Children’s Hospice and are looking to

Befrienders – who are usually bereaved parents, grandparents or family members – are also needed to provide support to anyone affected by the death of a baby over the phone and in person at group meetings.

New befrienders must complete our befriender training, and a minimum of two years must have passed since their baby died.

I hope there are people in and around Woodford who will consider helping to set up a group in the area so we can look to provide support to bereaved parents and their families at a devastating time for them.

Currently, there is little support in the Woodford area for these parents and it is very much needed. I would urge anyone who could help to get in touch.

As my illness continued, my GP diagnosed Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome, sent me for tests and referred me to a chronic fatigue syndrome clinic at Barts (the waiting list was over 13 months). I still thought I’d soon recover.

After a year, my sick pay ran out, so I attempted to work part-time – a big mistake as I made my condition much worse, developing balance problems, terrible aches in my limbs and overwhelming fatigue, such that I would sleep for more than 12 hours at a time. The professor at the clinic told me that ME sufferers were often ‘Type A’ personalities and task-driven, but unfortunately, ‘we don’t do personality

transplants!’ Eventually, I had to accept I could no longer continue my career.

Walking down the road, my body would just stop while my mind was expecting me to continue.

I tried to run when I thought a car was going to hit me but my legs just buckled beneath me – very scary, as is the ‘brain fog’ when just forming a sentence is a struggle.

When I discovered the East London ME Group, I found people who understood how I felt and tried to help me come to terms with the loss of my life as it used to be (my career, my dancing, my travelling and more).

I had a very ‘boom and bust’ approach as I hated starting tasks and leaving them unfinished and found trying to pace myself impossible. I discovered that others had ‘super-sensitivity’ – not for me to light but to perfume, chemicals and, very unfortunately, to alcohol. I found I was lucky to have a sympathetic GP who realised how ME would devastate my life whereas others had been disbelieved for years.

I can now cope with travelling again at a gentle pace if I rest alone one day in three. At home, I need to lie down for much of the day but it means I can plan to go out with friends (hence the photo of me at a theatre venue with non-alcoholic drink in hand!).

My plea is for more research and my hope is for a cure.

onday, 16 April 2018 is a day I remember all too clearly. It should have been an exciting day, finding out the primary school place my daughter would be attending, sharing the news with her and getting her all excited about the prospect of starting ‘big school’.

places in Redbridge had dropped for the second year running and a record number (88%) of applicants had got their first choice. We were one of the unfortunate 72 applicants who did not get any of their choices.

In the local papers we read that the corporate director of people for Redbridge Council had promised the 72 of us that they had a ‘team of people on hand to help with the options available’.

We never received a single call or any help whatsoever from anyone at the council.

Instead, when the email finally came through that evening, our excitement turned to disbelief in a matter of seconds. The email told us we had not got any of our six preferred options, instead they had placed us in a school two and a half miles from where we live – over an hour’s walk from our home on a route across Charlie Brown’s Roundabout.

We were worried about the effect this would have on both of our children and our family life. As a two-parent working family, the options at the time were one of us leaving our job or having to move from our family home. The round journey to my son’s nursery on to my

BIRDS ARE PREY Bob Elliot is head of the RSPB Investigations team and will be giving a talk in South Woodford this October about the organisation’s ongoing fight against bird crime

T

he RSPB Investigations team is all about detecting and preventing crimes against wild birds, particularly birds of prey – also known as raptors. You might not think it, but our beautiful countryside can be a dangerous place for birds of prey. Every week, my team receives reports of birds like red kites, peregrine falcons and buzzards being deliberately shot, trapped or poisoned. This is not only brutal but illegal, punishable by imprisonment and an unlimited fine. The persecution of raptors must stop – and you can help.

This summer, I was fortunate enough to spend a week in Switzerland, taking in the incredible alpine scenery around the Matterhorn. As well as an abundance of flora and fauna, I saw goshawks and other raptors in numbers you just don’t see here in the UK. Places like the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District National Park (popular holiday spots themselves) should be abundant in beautiful

birds of prey, but sadly, this is increasingly not the case. Illegal persecution has a lot to do with this. So, what’s going on?

A good deal of our work takes place in the uplands of northern Britain, particularly on land managed for driven grouse shooting. To maintain artificially high numbers of red grouse, some gamekeepers are sadly resorting to illegal predator control. This puts some of our most vulnerable birds in the firing line, like the rare hen harrier. These are gorgeous birds – the males a pale, ghostly grey and the females a mottled brown. Both have distinct owllike faces. But unless you’re very fortunate, or really know where to look, most people won’t ever have encountered one of these aerial marvels. Just three successful nests were recorded in England last year, despite habitat for over 300 pairs. Not good, is it?

To build a clearer picture of why these birds aren’t doing well, my colleagues regularly fit satellite tags to young hen harriers. By sending us regular transmissions, we can see where the birds go after they fledge. Sadly, a number of satellite-tagged hen harriers have suspiciously vanished over grouse moors, their tags suddenly ceasing to transmit.

Swallow on the Water

Over the summer, a racing boat was launched on the River Wear in Durham. The boat – which belongs to St Chad’s College of Durham University – was paid for by South Woodford resident John Swallow

I

was a history student at St Chad’s College, a constituent college of Durham University, from 1946 to 1949, immediately after the Second World War. On account of my slight stature, I was one of the college’s rowing team coxes and relished my ability to glide under Durham’s four bridges over the river without irreparable damage to the boat I was steering – despite one of the bridges having an evil bend in one of its arches.

I always kept in touch with my college and with its rowing prowess…

After college, I began my teaching career in Loughton in 1950 and continued it in Harlow and Romford, being appointed head of Ongar Secondary School in 1969. I was able to turn this secondary modern of 300 into a successful community comprehensive school of 1,600. In 1955 I was awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal – the jubilee equivalent of an OBE – for services to education.

My personal residence has always been South Woodford and locally, I have held every post open to lay people at St Mary’s Church. For 50 years (from 1956), I was also secretary (chief executive) of Woodford Memorial Hall and greatly enjoyed facilitating as much community use of the venue as possible.

As time moved on, I always kept in touch with my college and with its rowing prowess

and I became sad to see the boathouse on the river bank fall into a state of dilapidation, endangering the very prowess referred to. What to do about the situation? Sixty years had gone by since my coxing period and by then, my personal finances had improved in comparison to my college days, so that my decision to assist was possible.

I gave the college a donation to rebuild the boathouse. No one, however, had reckoned with the near impossibility of securing planning permission for anything on Durham’s riverbank.

The college architect produced a brilliant plan to add an upper storey and create a full social centre for all manner of activities.

The planners’ answer was still no, and stalemate was reached.

A final application was made, to which the answer this time was an even more resounding negative because the World Heritage authority had extended the World Heritage site from the magnificent cathedral and castle area to the whole city, thereby ensuring that thenceforth, no planning application for anything would ever be granted.

What could the college do with my donation? Discussion and consultation ensued until Principal Dr Margaret Masson – who incidentally has managed to repair the boathouse to a very sound standard – proposed purchasing a new racing boat. I was delighted, as was my family, when we attended a regatta, during which the new boat was launched in competition. Its name? The Swallow.

I

remember the first photograph I ever took. I was about seven or eight at the time and I was on holiday somewhere in Wales. It was back in the days of 35mm film, and I think we had just one or two rolls with us. I was given permission, probably for reasons of personal development, to take ‘one’ picture. My chosen subject was a nearby electricity pylon. I had long been fascinated by these strange creatures that roamed all over the countryside.

They were big at the bottom, small at the top, made up of geometric patterns, and linked together by sweeping cables.

My parents were horrified by my subject choice; however, they did offer the compromise solution of a sheep sitting with a couple of her lambs beneath a pylon. I grudgingly accepted. I am thankful that photo editing software was not commonplace

In the 19th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Linda Topping explains some of the challenges she faces while photographing her travels at that time, otherwise I fear my beloved pylon would have been discreetly cropped out the minute my back was turned.

That picture has long been lost, but my desire to photograph things has not. While architecture and structural form still remain a favoured subject, these days I am more of a jack of all trades. The majority of my pictures are taken whilst travelling, and though my fellow members at the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society (WWPS) have been known to describe my photos as record shots, I don’t take this as a criticism. The main thing that motivates me to take photos is to capture the scenes I see on my travels, many of which are rapidly disappearing. The reason I joined WWPS is so I can record these better.

On my trips, I try to take a variety of pictures to portray the flavour of the place. I like

to capture elements of old and new, so pictures of imperial palaces will appear in an album alongside ones of new high-tech trains.

One of the big challenges I face is that I am never in one place long enough to choose the conditions in which I take my pictures.

Often, the light is wrong, or the area is too crowded. This is where I find editing software comes in handy. I am sure the debate

about whether or not this is ‘cheating’ will rumble on long after I have hung up my lenses.

However, for me, the tinkering of my photographs enables them to reflect my rose-tinted memories of places.

I hope that in the coming years I can improve my photography skills further. However, even if I don’t, I suspect I’ll still keep taking pictures, just as long as I can press the shutter.

In the fifth of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary year, club member Alan Simpson offers some insight into the group’s history, which in turn provides a pictorial record of our changing surroundings

uring the 1950s and 1960s there was a constant turnover of society membership. Some members moved away, others were not able to continue for domestic reasons. The loss of talented members in this way made it difficult for the club to fulfil the hopes of the early members that the society would ‘take its place amongst the foremost in the country’. Finances also caused concern at this time, and the society held its first raffle in September 1953, tickets costing 6d and the prize worth approximately 4/6.

The programme for 1968 shows that the club had become more competitive…

The society had 37 members in 1956, and the records of the monochrome print competitions show there were three advanced workers, seven intermediate and five preliminary.

The society began to place greater emphasis on competitions, and with this came the need to establish rules. In 1953, a print panel was established to select prints for competitions and to determine the classes. In 1955, the committee agreed to set up rules for print competitions.

In 1955, the first four-way annual print battle was held involving photographic societies from Ilford, Loughton, Bishops Stortford and Woodford.

Several years later, in 1964, the

Camera Club and Enfield Camera Club. Woodford Photographic Society ceased taking part in the early 2000s, but in 2018 this competition is still going strong, taking place annually, having become a monochrome print competition between Walthamstow, Chingford, Loughton and Enfield clubs.

After the war, 35mm colour slides became increasingly popular and the programmes were arranged to give an equal balance of colour slides and monochrome prints in competitions, the first colour slide competition being held in 1953. Cameras and equipment were not too expensive, and with slides being commercially processed, the opportunity for photography was open to all.

form of entertainment for the general public, both at home and at other society meetings.

In 1957, to foster this interest, the society decided to allow both home-processed and tradeprocessed slides to be entered into competitions.

In 1962, the Wanstead and Woodford Borough Council staged a ‘What We Do’ exhibition at the Sir James Hawkey Hall as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations. All local organisations were invited to contribute. The Woodford Photographic Society had four panels on display at the exhibition, one of which was used to show samples of the Emler Collection.

In 1968, Henry Malby, grandson of the founder of the society, was elected honorary vice-president and life member of the society.

After a long period of caretaker strikes in 1967 and 1968, which came without warning so that lecturers, judges and members could not be notified, the society found other premises at Ray Lodge church hall, which also

had a storeroom available. The club needed a new projector at this time and members were asked for donations, contributing £10 towards the total cost of £27 14s 9d.

By the end of the 1960s, the content of the programmes had changed. The programme for 1968 shows the club had become more competitive. Of the 42 meetings, 16 were competitions.

Some members contributed an evening, including Fred James and Reg Fowkes, but there were also talks and demonstrations by professional companies, including May & Baker, Agfa, Kodak, Minolta, the Camera Centre and the Photographic Alliance.

ow often do you pop downstairs and come up again, bringing several things that rightly belong upstairs, but none of them the thing you went downstairs to fetch? I was (still am) one of four. Our early years were spent in a corner house in Hillside Avenue, Woodford Green. “Lots of extra light,” Mum would say. The staircase was the repository for things that needed to go upstairs and you were expected to take your turn at carrying things up if you were headed that way.

We had rotas for everything: washing up, cleaning the brass fender, peeling the carrots.

You name it! Mum said it was important “to improve the shining hour”. Does anyone use that expression in this century? The dictionary has it down as ‘archaic’. So, that’s me in my pigeonhole, isn’t it! I see it comes from a book by Isaac Watts published in 1715. It means you should make good use of opportunities when they arise.

The phrase was often brought out when we were on holiday at the seaside and passing a public convenience. You didn’t know when you might find another one.

The reason I was popping downstairs this morning was to fetch a glue stick. But I returned with a couple of novels (from The Children’s Society ‘3 for

The glue stick, that I did gather up at the second attempt, was for some essential repairs to a jigsaw puzzle I was testing for Oxfam. “No-one wants a puzzle with pieces missing,” says the manager, John. “People will come back and demand a refund.” Can you believe it? There were no pieces missing in the puzzle I had just completed. But quite a number had little loose flaps on one of the edges with the top layer of paper containing the picture itself having come loose. Destined to break off completely on its next outing unless someone applied a dab of TLC. You either love or hate jigsaw puzzles, I understand. Some people find them exhausting and time-wasting on a par with cryptic crosswords, they say.

I find them a source of total relaxation; when your brain is concentrating on finding a scrap of card, perhaps pinkish with a green background and depicting, say, the petals of a petunia or half of the dear Queen Mother’s nose, you are completely oblivious to

other, more weighty concerns.

I’m never in a hurry to see how quickly I can complete the puzzle. It sits there for days in one of my upstairs windows for moments when a brief break is essential (like the gaps in the sets at Wimbledon). With speed not an issue, I avoid using the picture as a guide and I never start with the edge pieces. Some puzzles that have been handed in at Oxfam contain a separate bag for the edge pieces. Oh dear, oh dear. I immediately restore them to their colleagues. Is the nanny state to reach even into my idle moments and insist on making things simpler for me when the whole point of a puzzle is to puzzle?

I expect you’ve guessed: I’m writing this in August. The newspapers call it the ‘silly season’, when a lack of what they regard as important news means they have to track down more trivial, perhaps parochial, incidents. But that’s what lives are largely made up of. (‘Made up of?’ Do you disapprove? Look,

there’s no problem at all ending a sentence with two prepositions.

Winston Churchill, that master of effective speech, scoffed at such a rule. He was fond of quoting a sentence that ended with four: “Who is the book you are being read to out of by?”). But back now to ‘what our lives are largely made up of’. That is the very reason why we four would relish the letters that followed us to wherever we were, around the world. Letters from Mum. Full of her day-to-day activity: chatting with the new manager at the Co-op; making a fruit cake for the South Woodford Townswomen’s Guild fundraiser; completing her latest knitted woolly hat for ‘The Mission to Seamen’. And – I suppose she was imagining us engaged in exciting adventures in distant, exotic lands – usually ending with four words. “Much love. No news.”

t’s almost guaranteed that a quick glance at the news these days will have an item relating to young people, usually for the wrong reasons.

Yet, there are many good things to talk about where teenagers are concerned that often go unheard or unheeded.

What blew me away was the energy and skill of the performers. It was hard just to keep them in frame!

One initiative is Boroughs United, where 33 boroughs within London encourage their young people – 13 to 19 years of age – to take part and compete in various forms of entertainment. He went on to say that, while he had not seen the earlier rounds, it was clear that to achieve the level of performance he was seeing would have required hours of practice and dedication. Hot-desking Local solicitors Wiseman Lee have received an unprecedented number of questions in recent months about whether an employee can go home if it gets too hot at work. Pranav Bhanot reports

he United Kingdom basked in scorching 30ºC plus heat in July and August. And while health and safety laws do not specify maximum and minimum workplace temperatures, The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulation 1992 states employers must maintain a “reasonable” temperature in the workplace. Unfortunately, there is no legal definition as to the meaning of “reasonable”.

However, what constitutes “reasonable” will depend on the tasks an employee needs to carry out. The more active the task, the cooler the temperature ought to be.

Thermal discomfort among employees can result in more mistakes…

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) code of practice suggests a minimum of 16ºC (or 13ºC if the work is particularly physical) but provides no maximum temperature. In the absence of a suggested maximum, it has been widely agreed that for most types of work, the acceptable maximum temperature lies between 16ºC and 24ºC. Having no official maximum working temperature may have been acceptable previously; but with heatwaves on the rise, employers are facing increasing complaints from staff about workplace temperatures.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is now campaigning for

a maximum legal temperature for indoor workplaces of 30ºC (27ºC where work requires considerable physical activity), as well as an obligation on employers to take action to cool down the workplace when temperatures reach 24ºC. Whilst it is uncertain whether a legal maximum temperature will be introduced, the HSE’s guidance advises employers to focus on their workers’ “thermal comfort” (their perception of temperature and the effect that it has on them) when regulating workplace temperature. After all, the HSE believes “thermal discomfort” among employees can result in more mistakes being made in the workplace.

In hot weather, employers should consider steps to achieve a more comfortable environment, such as relaxing dress codes, installing window shades and air conditioning fans or increasing ventilation.

For employees who commute to work by train, temperatures exceeding 27ºC can cause steel railway tracks to swell and buckle, resulting in delays. If an employee fails to attend work for a reason outside of their control, such as heat-related travel disruption, they may not be legally entitled to pay. However, employers should be cautious about deducting employees’ pay for this reason alone, as it could detrimentally impact employee morale and productivity and result in negative publicity for the employer.

Starting with between 20 and 30, membership had increased to 252 by the end of the year, by which time a programme of illustrated lectures – interspersed with coffee mornings in various members’ houses and the occasional afternoon tea – had been established.

We raised well over £100,000 for the Neptune Coastline Campaign…

Soon, a junior section was formed, the first meeting of this taking place on 14 November 1969 at Woodford County High School. These events were well attended and consisted of talks given by some of our members and carried on for some time. The various speakers very generously gave their fees to the centre, which initiated our many years of sending a donation to the Neptune Coastline Campaign, enabling the National Trust to purchase sections of the Welsh, English and Northern Irish coastline.

With their new season of monthly talks starting this September, Clive Boon takes a look at the centre’s history, which includes making a substantial contribution to the Neptune Coastline Campaign

May that year an open day was well supported, with £400 sent to National Trust headquarters.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, membership steadily rose to a peak of 1,010 in 1985.

Consequently, the centre’s activities became more varied and adventuresome, with up to three holidays a year being customary. At most of the winter meetings, it was not unusual for 400 chairs to be set out in the Hawkey Hall. By 2005, lack of support began to materialise with the consequent fall in membership occurring steadily thereafter. The threatened closure of the Hawkey Hall in 2014 had a disastrous effect, with 80 members not renewing their membership. These days, we rejoice if we have an attendance of 100.

Some highlights in our history include hosting the Annual Regional Conference at the Woodford Moat House in 1992, with chairs and secretaries of the centres and associations in the region attending. Memorable speakers include John Julius Norwich, Lord Chorley and Dame

Our May fair became a regular event, beginning in May 1991 and continuing every other year until 2009. As a result of the success of the fairs over the years, we raised well over £100,000 for the Neptune Coastline Campaign.

In the course of our 50-year history, the centre has been served by just three secretaries, and in that time has contributed well over £200,000 to various National Trust projects.

We now meet at All Saints’ Church hall in Woodford Green and the Woodford Memorial Hall in South Woodford and boast an extensive programme:

The first meeting took place on 12 February 1968 in the Hawkey Hall with a speaker from central office. With minutes of the 1967 coffee morning being written in shorthand, there is some confusion as to whether the meeting ever took place.

However, there is no doubt that the first full meeting of the centre was held on 16 March 1968 at Woodford County High School and subsequent AGMs are numbered from that date.

he genesis of the Woodford and District Centre of the National Trust was a coffee morning held on 7 December 1967 at Number 30, Snakes Lane, when it was decided that membership of the proposed centre would cost five shillings.

In addition, it should not be forgotten that the National Trust is a countrywide organisation dedicated to preserving the nation’s heritage and environment.

The National Trust Woodford and District Centre begins its new season of events with a talk about gardening during the Second World War at All Saints’ Church hall on 12 September (2.30pm).

This will be followed by a talk about how sailing barges once transported gunpowder down the Lea Valley at Woodford Memorial Hall on 16 October (10.30am). Visitors are welcome (£3).
