Useful numbers in and around South Woodford…

If you drop litter, you are a ‘stupid, selfish, thoughtless yob’. So said Alex Proud in his column in The Daily Telegraph a few years ago. Proud explained this was his ‘knee-jerk reaction to litter’, but went on to analyse some litter-related facts and concluded his gut reaction was correct. Barring an overflowing bin and some litter-spreading gusts of wind, it’s hard to imagine any valid reason for unwanted items of packaging to be on the street (not that overflowing bins are acceptable).

As Proud pointed out, not littering requires a minuscule effort, so the only logical conclusion for intentional littering is, at best, ignorance and at worst, selfishness. Not wanting to waste my words here on exploring ways of preventing the problem, I’ll skip straight to the cure: litter pickers. That considerate army of volunteers who meet to pick up other people’s rubbish; that thoughtful commuter who returns a scattered paper cup to a nearby bin on their way to the office; that retired resident who uses their time to keep local streets tidy. Whatever form it takes – even those paid to do it – litter pickers make a difference. Not only do they remove said waste from the streets but studies have also shown that litter attracts littering, so by keeping our streets clean, we’re breaking a vicious circle.

As I look across my living room floor, there is the odd Barbie doll and a few pieces from The Gruffalo board game making a break for freedom from the box, but not a single crisp packet, sweet wrapper or plastic bottle in sight. Not a surprise considering it’s where I live. But I also live in a community. A community with a high street for a dining room, numerous residential streets for a living room and multiple green spaces for a garden.

As my roommate, I hope you will keep the place tidy.

Plans to close South Woodford’s Post Office and relocate it on a franchise basis within Business Boss at 115 George Lane have been scrapped – but the search will continue for a new retail partner. “We held a public consultation last year on plans to franchise and relocate our George Lane branch a short distance, but the proposed new operator will not be progressing their application to run the branch,” said a Post Office spokesperson. “We remain committed to continuing to

provide convenient access to our services in South Woodford.

The current branch on George Lane is not sustainable into the long term and we will therefore continue to seek a new potential retail partner… The vast majority of our branches are run on a franchise or agency basis alongside retail businesses because it is a successful model.

We will announce new proposals when we have detailed plans and, in the meantime, the current branch will continue to provide our services to customers.”

Volunteers help keep South Woodford tidy

New sports hub at former football ground

Local National Trust becomes more local at 50

Planning permission has been granted to create a new sports and education hub at the former Woodford Town Football Ground on Snakes Lane East, which has lain derelict and overgrown for 15 years. “Two classrooms will provide childcare before and after school, with theory-based sports studies for 16- to 18-yearolds during the main school day,” said a spokesperson for Foundation Sports, who are offering six weeks of free football coaching from September 2018.

The Woodford and District branch of the National Trust celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and with a change of venue for their monthly events the group will become more accessible to South Woodford residents. The new season of talks – which cover a diverse range of topics – starts in September, with meetings now scheduled to alternate between Woodford Memorial Hall in South Woodford and All Saints’ Church in Woodford Wells (visitors welcome). The South Woodford Society held its first litter pick on 13 May, the same weekend that over 1,100 events were held nationwide as part of the The Great Plastic Pick Up, a campaign led by the Daily Mail and Keep Britain Tidy.

“We were loaned litter picks by Redbridge Council and the group split into three teams to tackle Charlie Brown’s Roundabout and the streets around the station, finishing up at the flower beds by The Shrubberies,” said a spokesperson for the group, which managed to collect over 20 bags of rubbish and at least five bags of recycling.

“Many thanks to all those who attended, and especially our youngest volunteers, who were super energetic and were probably our most prolific litter pickers.” Further local litter picks are being planned. Visit southwoodfordsociety.com

South Woodford children’s book review competition

Local children are invited to enter a book review competition this summer, with prizes on offer including personalised stationery and a trophy. “When children aged between seven and 10 register for the Summer Reading Challenge at South Woodford Library and Gym, they will be offered the chance to write a review and enter the competition once they have completed the challenge, by reading any six library books of their choice over the summer holidays,” explained Library Development Officer Christine Thompson. Run in partnership with private tuition company Thy English Academy, entries will be judged on content, spelling, punctuation, grammar and style, with the winners announced in September. Mayor’s Appeal Committee raises £78,000 Outgoing Mayor of Redbridge Councillor Linda Huggett’s Appeal Committee raised over £78,000 for charity during her year in office, which came to an end in May. Kaleigh Lau passes away after brain tumour battle

Tributes have been paid to Kaleigh Lau, an eight-year-old from Woodford Green who passed away in June following a two-year battle with a rare type of brain tumour. “We are the proudest parents that you can imagine. We were very honoured to have her as our daughter and she has changed so many lives. She has taught people to cherish their children and to think of the bigger picture,” said Kaleigh’s father, Scott. In April 2016, Kaleigh was diagnosed with a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a tumour located in the middle of the brain stem for which there is no known cure.

During a period of experimental treatment in Mexico Kaleigh received support from a range of celebrities and political figures, including Simon Cowell, Ilford North MP Wes Streeting and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Organisers of the annual Amy’s Day golf and BBQ event are seeking local businesses to sponsor a hole on Wanstead Golf Course. Now in its sixth year, the day is held in memory of former South Woodford resident Amy Goacher, who died from ovarian cancer in 2012. Since then, parents Bob and Tina and sister Megan have celebrated Amy’s life and raised funds for cancer research by holding a golf competition, BBQ and auction.

The new Mayor of Redbridge has chosen Woodford Bridge charity ELHAP as the beneficiary of the annual mayor’s appeal fund.

Councillor Debbie Kaur-Thiara – who was selected as mayor for the municipal year 2018 to 2019 at the annual Redbridge Council meeting on 24 May – will host a number of fundraising events during her time in office to support the Roding Lanebased venue. “This is a magical and unique charity… providing adventure play opportunities to disabled and disadvantaged children, young people and adults. Since 1976, they have supported tens of thousands of disabled children from across north-east London and Essex,” said a spokesperson for the mayor. “Councillor Kaur-Thiara’s focus during the year will be to promote children’s services available in the borough.”

“We are so grateful to Chigwell Construction and the generosity of our supporters who made it possible to transform our hospice with a brighter, colourful and more spacious interior in our 15th birthday year. This has been our biggest refurbishment since opening in 2003 and means we are in a better position to meet the changing needs of our families,” said Mike Palfreman, chief executive of Haven House.

Space inside the hospice has been made more accessible, with a new open-plan nurses’ station, wider door frames, larger lift and the removal of partitions.

South Woodford and Woodford Green gardens open to the public this July in aid of charity Two residents will open their gardens to the public this July as part of the charitable National Gardens Scheme (NGS). Green-fingered South Woodford resident Helen Auty will be inviting guests into her garden on 8 July from 12 noon to 5pm (adults: £4; children: free).

Helen has been cultivating the garden of 46 Cheyne Avenue – which was built in 1926 – since she moved in over 25 years ago and has participated in the NGS scheme annually since 2014. “This garden was untouched when

I moved in,” said Helen. “I have always enjoyed gardening and since retiring I have had more time.” Helen’s garden is on the site of Lord Cheyne’s original market garden and is described as a ‘typical suburban garden with borders of shrubs, climbers and perennials’. In Woodford Green, Jenny Richmond will open her 100-foot L-shaped garden at 20 Goldhaze Close – which features a ‘huge 35-year-old eucalyptus tree’ – on 29 July from 12.30pm to 5pm (adults: £4.50; children: free). Redbridge Council has been awarded £485k from a £30m government fund to reduce rough sleeping in the borough.

The funding will see a dedicated rough sleeping co-ordinator appointed to work with local partners to tackle homelessness.

The money will also provide additional beds at a new pop-up hostel in Ilford to be run by the Salvation Army, which offers 42 studio flats. The government scheme aims to halve rough sleeping by 2022 and eliminate it altogether by 2027.

The Mayor of London has confirmed the capital’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) – which will see the most polluting vehicles charged for entering central London from April 2019 – will be extended out to the North and South Circular in 2021. While the majority of Redbridge will not be affected, Wanstead and parts of South Woodford will fall within the new boundary. Drivers within the expanded zone using non-compliant vehicles will have to pay a daily ULEZ charge of £12.50. Visit swvg.co/ulez

A life of

contrasts Ged Rumak is one of many artists taking part in this year’s Woodford Festival.

Here, the local painter explains what led him to portraiture

M

y life started on what could be described as ‘a good wicket’. My father was a talented amateur artist and a good draughtsman. I remember him telling me that if you can draw hands, you can draw anything.

Brought up in a semi-rural environment on the edges of the industrial North East, the son of a Polish father who was stationed there with the RAF, the hugely contrasting landscapes were a major influence from my early years. A visual fascination with the steel mills, shipyards, coal mines and the extraordinary sculptural structures of the chemical industry that was ICI contrasted dramatically with the vastness of the North Yorkshire moors and the rugged Northumberland coast.

I suppose I regard myself as a studio painter – with excursions After leaving grammar school, I studied at Middlesbrough College of Art and the Central School of Art and Design in London. A lifetime in advertising and design, mainly in the West End of London, followed.

Throughout my career, communicating ideas and pleasing an audience were my prime concerns, but the life class, sketchbook, easel and artist’s palette were ever-present.

I have exhibited and continue to exhibit my work at galleries nationally and internationally, regularly showing at the Bankside Gallery, next to Tate

Modern, and at open exhibitions at the Mall Gallery.

Essentially a figurative artist, I don’t work down predictable lines. Never wanting to stay in the same place stylistically too long, I’ve come to realise that after many years of artistic study, there are no rules in painting.

One must follow one’s own artistic instincts and not be influenced by another’s personal style or method.

Most of my work is based on personal experiences, especially when working ‘en plein air’. My role is to capture the experience of the moment, often producing images that resonate in the mind. A fleeting glimpse of light and shadow, just being there at the right time, can produce small moments of revelation when the familiar appears extraordinary.

Over the years, the more experimental side of my work has evolved, bringing things down to earth, making the work more tangible, more approachable.

My still life paintings are to some extent planned out, but often the plan is abandoned; the painting evolves in its own way and can become richly layered in the process. Still-life subjects have a studio intimacy often starting with a concept or idea, perhaps with a story to tell. It is a very contrasting process starting an indoor work in the studio as opposed to being ‘out and about’, taking in the landscape, and then bringing the work into the studio. I suppose I regard myself as a studio painter – with excursions.

A deep interest in people and people’s lives has led me to portraiture. Finding a model is difficult but the real difficulty is always discovered when painting yourself. Commissioned portraits are normally made for reasons of commemoration and

affection. I often point out that, unlike a car that deteriorates in time or a classic wine that has gone after you have enjoyed it, a portrait lasts generations.

After a painting is finished, it can take some time to ‘see’ the portrait. The first impact can be unsettling; we are so used to photographic images. I often suggest that it’s best to live with the portrait for a few months before making any judgements.

I am currently indulging in a penchant for narrative in my portraiture.

Some of us may wish to avoid knowing anything about the artist or his motivation, with the success of the work, when seen, standing alone. But then again, perhaps the artists’ business in the world is not to always succeed but to fail in good spirits.

warning signs Wiseman Lee recently acted for the siblings of the late Marcel Chu – a South Woodford resident – in a High Court claim against Mr Chu’s carer in relation to a will dispute. Devorah Ormonde reports

arcel Chu of South Woodford had made a will at our firm in 2008, which left 26% of his estate to each of his siblings, 7% each to a niece and nephew and 8% to a friend. After his death in May 2014, Donna Henderson, who had been employed as his carer for the last 18 months of his life, produced a new will dated two days prior to his death when he was critically ill in hospital. Ms Henderson was the major beneficiary in the 2014 will, and her children were also left 4% each, while his siblings’ shares were considerably reduced.

The striking feature of the 2014 will was that the signature of the testator appeared to bear little resemblance to Mr Chu’s normal signature. It was also considerably more fluent than his signature on other documents in the two weeks prior to his death, so the change could not be explained by frailty hindering him attempting his normal signature.

Ms Henderson claimed the reason for the discrepancy was that Mr Chu was struggling to sign the will by himself because of his physical weakness.

She stated she held his wrist and hand to support him whilst he held the pen and that the signature was guided by her.

Although guided signatures are rare, case law dating back to 1710 has established that it is possible for a testator’s hand or wrist to be supported or assisted to sign a will. However, the action of signing and the formation of the letters cannot be led by the guide. It is therefore important to look at the signature itself where it is produced in circumstances where a testator’s hand is being guided, especially in a situation such as this where the person who stands to benefit most is the one acting as the guide.

In this case, we consulted a handwriting expert to compare the signature on the will with other signatures of Marcel Chu which were known to be genuine. The expert concluded that the signature on the 2014 will was unlikely to be Mr Chu’s and the judge ultimately found that the 2014 will had not been validly executed. Mr Chu’s estate will now be dealt with in accordance with the will he made in 2008.

A person who has difficulty in signing their name but wishes to make a will can, in fact, do so without signing the will at all.

Under the Wills Act 1837, a testator may direct someone else to sign a will on their behalf and in their presence. To avoid any question of whether such a will was actually signed at the direction of the testator, anyone intending to make a will in this way would be well advised to seek professional assistance.

Local dance journalist and photographer Carole Edrich has launched a magazine app to help support anyone who uses movement in performance, starting with those based at Redbridge Drama Centre in South Woodford

D

ance expresses the drive to create the perfect moment. It is social and selfish, grasping and gregarious. Dance describes and releases fantasy and fulfilment. It expresses sensuality and sensitivity, intellect and intuition. Dance flows from the cutting edge of creativity where risks are taken to achieve a vision. It reflects extremes of performance, discipline and dedication. It can result from the need to push body and mind through established limits, from selfishness, generosity, guts and desire.

In the UK, the average dancer’s salary is £5,000 My name is Carole Edrich. You may have met me in Wanstead, Leytonstone or South Woodford or read my Angels in Wanstead column in the Wanstead Village Directory. It’s because of dance that I’ve stopped writing that.

My earliest memories of dance as a child were more about the excuses I used to avoid Yvonne Dudley’s ballet lessons than what I learnt. That’s ironic, because in my thirties, I sought her out for private lessons because I wanted

to bring more control and fluidity into my bodybuilding routine.

At no time during those lessons did I ever imagine I’d become a ‘method’ dance journalist and learn enough of 65 different dance forms to feel able to write about and photograph them, or that I’d become so frustrated with the way these wonderful creatives were treated that I would decide to do something to help them. That was four years ago.

The app is just the beginning.

I want to use Dance GRiST to help dancers directly. By training movement creatives (performers, social dancers, teachers and dance enthusiasts) how to create high-quality content (images, videos, words or sounds), how to pitch their ideas and get paid for them, I can help them earn more.

That’s important. In the UK, the average dancer’s annual salary is £5,000. That’s about a quarter of the living wage.

I’ve now started a small business, which I hope will become a nonprofit. It’s called Dance GRiST and is a training organisation that looks like a magazine in an app. Each issue explores just one subject. It covers dance in ways (and at a depth) that does dance justice because conventional media doesn’t provide what I believe dancers need.

Life is hard for these people and it shouldn’t be. They give so many people so much pleasure.

mischief in South Woodford!

T

he Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children aged four to 12 years and helps get three-quarters of a million children into libraries to boost their reading skills and confidence. Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure.

In 2018, children all over the UK will be invited to embark on a reading adventure in libraries.

This year, the theme will be ‘Mischief Makers’ inspired by the iconic children’s title The Beano, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary. A number of events will be taking place at South Woodford Library in July and August as part of the challenge, such as slime-making, family storytime and sensory boxes.

Taking part is easy. The aim of the challenge is for children to read six library books of their choice during the summer holidays.

Children can read whatever they like – fiction, joke books, picture books, audiobooks – just as long as they are borrowed from the library. There are rewards to collect along the way, including a certificate and a medal.

The scheme promises to encourage reading on a giant scale. As children read over the summer, they will use their wits and power of observation to complete a treasure map and pick up stickers along the way.

Younger children, who are not yet reading, can earn a certificate of their own for visiting the library and borrowing books throughout the summer.

It is never too early to introduce books and reading. Research has

For children under five years, South Woodford Library will continue to run twice-weekly rhymetimes on Tuesdays (2pm to 2.30pm) and Fridays (10.30am to 11am) throughout the summer.

Once your child is in the reading habit and visiting the library regularly, we would love for them

to continue. We offer a range of activities during the holidays, from craft and storytelling to educational workshops.

Throughout the Summer Reading Challenge, library staff working alongside teenage and adult volunteers support the children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books.

Having the right kind of support can make all the difference…

1. Financial support If you are on low income, think about how you are going to support yourself during and after the divorce. Will your ex support you while you agree your financial settlement? You may also want to contact your local benefits office to check what you are entitled to. If you are already receiving benefits, you need to notify them of your change in status.

2. Where will you live?

Work out where you will both live – this is particularly important if you have young children. If you are going to move out of the family home, you may need to register a charge on the property if your name is not on the deeds.

5. Joint bank accounts Discuss whether you will continue to run a joint account, close it or transfer it to one person. Before you put a stop to any account, make provision for any standing orders and direct debits that go out on a regular basis.

6. Credit cards If either of you have a second card on the other’s credit card account, then you should discuss whether you are going to cancel this. Think carefully about how reliable your spouse is before you do so and notify them of your intention. If you are the second cardholder, check your card is still active before you use it.

very time I sit down to write this feature, we seem to have a new group of places opening and closing to talk about. This time, there seem to be more closures than openings, and even one closure I first talked about as opening in my first article of this series in July last year.

LDN Grill shut suddenly in March in a similar manner to its predecessor The Woodford, apparently due to ‘management issues’. Victoria’s Antiques, one of George Lane’s longest-serving independent retailers, shut up shop at the end of May after 20 years. And Absolute Caribbean on the High Road has also closed – the restaurant lease is for sale.

Restaurants have to be “Instagrammable”…

South Woodford’s high street seems to be in a state of constant change, but is it in crisis? In the fourth of an occasional series of articles, local resident Cate Jolley looks at what’s opened and what’s closed.

Costs, such as rent, inflation and food prices are going up and there are simply too many shops and restaurants in the market. At the same time, there has been a huge rise in online shopping, which is sometimes cheaper and easier for consumers.

Some other places appear to be vulnerable to closure. Our local Mexican restaurant Chimichanga is closing after its owner – the Prezzo restaurant chain – ran into financial difficulties, though our local branch of Prezzo (98 High Road; 020 8559 0192) will remain open. Marks and Spencer are also closing several sites, but South Woodford’s M&S Simply Food (121 George Lane; 020 8532 9771) is unaffected. And Sid and Evie’s (174 George Lane; 020 8530 5988), which is my go-to for children’s shoes and gifts, has issued a stark warning for locals to “use us or lose us”. So, is our high street really at risk or are these changes the result of wider trends?

Paul Martin, head of UK retail at KPMG, says shops need to do either “value, convenience or experience” well. In the restaurant market, consumer tastes are changing, with a focus on healthy eating, sustainable food sourcing and informal or experiential dining being favoured over impersonal corporate chains. Roger Tejwani, head of consumer sector at stockbrokers Finncap, says younger customers expect to be able to document what they are doing and “want to be seen in a cool place”, which means restaurants have to be “Instagrammable”. If retailers can get this right, they will continue to thrive.

The BBC reported in March that UK high streets are in crisis.

We now also have Friandise (in The Galleria off George Lane; 07741 888 473), which means ‘treat’ in French. Owner Aleksandra loves chocolate and handmade goods, so decided to bring them together. Friandise specialises in the finest French and Belgian loose chocolates in unique presentation boxes as well as art and crafts, which all look beautiful on their Facebook page. And last but not least, two of the new cafes I mentioned in the March/April 2018 issue: Cookies and Cream (156 George Lane; 020 3490 1753) and Kikirocs (90 George Lane; 07734 240 315), both seem to be doing brilliantly, with a strong social media

presence to show people what they offer and tempt them in. Kikirocs even offers the SoWo Stack, with the hashtag #SoWo being online shorthand for South Woodford.

The high street will always be changing, and where we see vacant lots, it is often only due to the legalities of buying and selling taking place behind the scenes. DRAGONFLY DETECTIVES The London Wildlife Trust will be hosting a dragonfly identification workshop along a local section of the River Roding this July as part of a citywide dragonfly and damselfly survey. Alice Wickman introduces the project and highlights six of these remarkable flying insects to watch out for

T

he London Wildlife Trust are working with Redbridge Council to survey the dragonfly and damselfly populations along the River Roding as part of the London-wide Water for Wildlife Project. This will help us understand how this dynamic group of species copes with the pressures of their environment.

Between May and September, London’s streams, rivers and ponds light up with the dazzling, darting flight of dragonflies and damselflies. These attractive and fascinating insects, collectively known as Odonata, thrive where the water is clean and are a great indicator species of healthy ecosystems. However, little is known about their distribution across London. Our River Roding workshop this July will contribute to our understanding of Odonata population distribution and is suitable for anyone interested in learning about dragonflies and taking part in surveys.

In addition to this workshop, we are also asking residents to become dragonfly detectives and help us create a wider map of where they live in the city. If you see a dragonfly or damselfly in your garden, or anywhere else, you can add it to our online database.

Dragonflies and damselflies spend most of their lives as predatory, subsurface larvae, dependent upon a good supply of aquatic insects on which to feed. As adults they are highly mobile, quickly colonising new habitats as water quality improves or as climate change opens up new territories.

Dragonflies are some of Britain’s largest insects with a body length of up to 8.5cm and wingspans that can reach 12cm.

Damselflies are smaller, typically being around 4cm long. When resting, a damselfly’s wings are held closed and folded together, unlike dragonflies, whose wings remain outstretched. Damselflies also have a weak, fluttery flight, while dragonflies have a strong, purposeful flight, with some capable of travelling up to 2km in search of smaller insects, which they catch in the air.

Large red damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula) Can be found in most river and wetland habitats but avoids fast-flowing water.

Both sexes have black legs and wing spots, females have three different colour forms, some have yellow shoulder stripes.

Emperor dragonfly (Anax imperator) Often found on large and wellvegetated ponds and lakes but can also be found by canals and slow-flowing rivers. The females lay their eggs into plants such as pondweed. The adult male is highly territorial.

Broad-bodied chaser (Erythromma najas) Found on ponds and often the first to colonise these habitats. Can often be seen perched on woody vegetation, overseeing territory.

Banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens) Found on slowflowing rivers with lots of lush, marginal vegetation.

Males can often be seen flitting amongst vegetation, looking for females. Males use their black wing spots to attract females in a courtship display. This species has been used as an indicator species of good river health when found in high numbers.

Red-eyed damselfly (Erythromma najas) Found in lakes, mineral extractions, canals and slow-flowing rivers. Males can be found sitting on floating leaves or dense mats of algae out on open water.

Willow emerald (Chalcolestes viridis) Usually near ponds, canals and other still-water bodies that have overhanging trees. Females lay their eggs into the bark of willow or alder trees.

Recent colonist, spreading west from Suffolk to Essex and the Home Counties. Has been recorded in the Roding area in recent years.

Venues should regularly check they are compliant with legislation…

This article is primarily (but not exclusively) aimed at pubs, clubs, restaurants, individuals and companies hosting events, off licences, sports clubs, cinemas and theatres.

The most important piece of legislation in this context is the Licensing Act 2003. The act has four key objectives of equal importance: the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance and the protection of children. The question to ask is are the objectives being promoted or undermined?

If a bar fails to meet the conditions of its licence, the police and authorities may decide to look closer at other licensed venues in the immediate area. Every breach of condition by neighbouring venues will be recorded. Should anyone else then decide to apply for extended hours or a wider licence, there will be evidence that will weaken their application. This is why it is so important for venues to regularly

check they are compliant with all the (ever-changing) legislation, rules and regulations. Venues should always seek to maintain excellent relations with their neighbours and be considerate to their needs.

I believe that by having responsible operators in wellrun profitable venues helps the economy. The addition of CCTV and professional door staff gives reassurance and aids crime prevention and detection.

If you want to carry out licensable activity on unlicensed premises (or on licensed premises but outside of the authority given by the existing licence) then you need to obtain a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) for events for less than 500 people. This includes selling alcohol, serving alcohol to members of a private club, providing entertainment (music, dance or indoor sporting events) and serving hot food and drink between 11pm and 5am.

Presently, the only people or bodies that can object to a TEN application are the police and environmental health, who must object within three working days of receiving the application.

I have found that the people I have spoken with at the council and the responsible authorities are enormously helpful and engaging people trying to ensure the Licensing Act objectives are followed and that due consideration is given to others who may be impacted.

TALK GROUP TALK #10 GROUP TALK GROUP In the 10th of a series of articles looking at local community groups, Paul Kaufman talks about the East London Humanists

ur group formed in 2012 as a local partner of Humanists UK, formerly the British Humanist Association. A shared aim is to bring non-religious people together.

A regular programme of events is organised through our Meetup site (registration is free and we now have 700 subscribers). Our monthly meetings are open to the public and are free. There is an important social element, with an opportunity to socialise before and after each meeting.

Topics reflect the group’s diverse interests. Examples this year range from poetry reading to a talk on male circumcision.

There is always plenty of chance for discussion and debate.

We also organise occasional outings. For example, on 11 July there is a guided tour of

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, London’s most urban woodland.

The park manager happens to be a Humanist celebrant.

So, what is the point of the group? It is a great way of connecting with other likeminded, free-thinking people.

Not everyone enjoys this opportunity at home or at work.

It’s stimulating, challenging and educational. It also provides a focal point for a range of other activities. These include campaigning on issues like faith schools, representing the nonreligious in community matters and promoting Humanist services, such as celebrants and pastoral care.

t’s strange, isn’t it, how something we had read, say, in our teens, can resurface years later for no apparent reason? When I sat down at the computer to seek inspiration for this issue’s diary, four words – rather uninspiring words, really – came into my mind: “I had an aunt.” I knew these were the opening words of one of dear old Charles Lamb’s essays that we studied in the sixth form at Woodford High.

I looked up my copy and read on: “I had an aunt. A dear and good one. The only secular employment I remember her engaged in was the splitting of French beans, and dropping them into a china basin of fair water.” In my teens, I had thought this was faintly ridiculous as an essay subject.

Why would anyone want to read about someone preparing vegetables? So ordinary. But now I get the point. Perhaps the vegetables were rather run-of-the-mill, even when “dropped in fair water”, but not the aunt.

I think of another friend writing countless letters to governments, dictators and potentates across the world in the passionate desire to win justice for political prisoners. As so often these days, I was immediately offered a seat. At Leytonstone, my benefactor was able to sit down again. Next to me. “It was kind of you to give me your seat,” I said. “There is apparently a plus side to wrinkles”. “Oh,” she said, “I didn’t stand up because I thought you looked old! It was just that I could see your new laundry basket was getting in everybody’s way.” We alighted together. Esplosione di gusto South Woodford resident Asiya Rasheed – a fan of Italian food – was keen to find out more about the signature dishes at her three favourite trattorias in the local area

A

simple spaghetti al pomodoro, a glass of Chianti and a Mediterranean breeze is my idea of the perfect Italian meal. At home, I constantly strive to discover dishes that take me back to these special memories. Fortunately for us, one of the delights of living in the cultural melting pot that is Woodford is the quality of the cuisine on our doorstep. The abundance of vibrant Italian eateries within the area allows us to transport ourselves back to those perfect holiday moments.

Probably best not to mention Italy’s absence in the World Cup… The charming Bella Naples (83 High Road; 020 8616 4345), found opposite the Odeon cinema, recreates the heartbeat of Naples through authentic Italian fare. Marcello, the owner, has long had a love affair with good food and worked across France, England and Italy before following his dream and setting up Bella Naples.

His all-time favourite dishes include homemade tagliatelle with Bolognese and, of course, scrumptious pizzas that are

made like they are back in his hometown of Naples: in a traditional wood oven that heats up to 400°C and cooks a pizza in 60 seconds. The best pizza topping? According to Marcello, you can’t beat a great Margherita.

Next stop is the family-owned Pizzeria Bel-Sit (439–441 High Road; 020 8504 1164). This restaurant will celebrate 37 years of service in September, which is no mean feat. Originally from Sardinia, Marco set up Pizzeria Bel-Sit opposite the green. In his years of trading, he has seen the changing tastes of diners and, despite the name, some of the firm favourites are the pasta dishes. In particular, there are a number of fish dishes that are classed as signatures, including the decadent lobster spaghetti and delicious crab linguine. As with many Italians, Marco is all about the best quality ingredients and this is

certainly reflected in the menu. A firm favourite in Woodford, diners are treated to great food in an atmospheric setting. The walls of this restaurant are graced with colourful football shirts alluding to Marco’s love of the game… probably best not to mention Italy’s absence in the World Cup at this point!

Our final foray into Italian cuisine comes courtesy of Nino’s (18 Electric Parade; 020 8989 6192). After working in the City, James decided to set up this chic establishment with his father and it has been a stalwart of South Woodford

since 1999. James has always been a fan of Italian cuisine and loves visiting Rome to indulge in the wonderful architecture and fantastic food. Some of the noteworthy dishes on the menu include prawns cooked in a brandy and garlic sauce, and for those with a sweet tooth, James recommends the Affogato, a classic Italian dessert that combines ice cream with shots of espresso and amoretto for the perfect end to every meal.

It’s impossible to overestimate the importance a support group can have for ME sufferers.

The nature of symptoms and lack of a diagnostic test cause scepticism from some in the medical profession, the media (remember ‘yuppie flu’?) and the public. Though the World Health Organization classifies it as neurological, the NHS continues to see it as psychological in nature. F

ather Robert Hampson, the vicar of Holy Trinity Church on Hermon Hill, was a larger-than-life character. I feel fortunate to have enjoyed his friendship and to have worked with him for over 16 years.

Robert did have strong opinions, not always popular…

Together with Dr Mohammed Fahim of the South Woodford Muslim Community Centre and a few other local ministers, we founded the East London Three Faiths Forum in early 2002, shortly after the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York. We believed then, and we believe now, that in order to break down suspicions and resentments, adherents of the three Abrahamic faiths must make the effort to understand more about each other’s religions, both beliefs and practices. Not from opinionated and inflammatory books and sermons or from prejudiced material so easy to find on the internet, but from real personal contact, and the effort to build friendships based on trust and respect.

The organisation is completely independent and receives no public funding.

Our local Three Faiths Forum has been holding monthly meetings for the past 16 years.

They take place in a local church, mosque or synagogue.

We discuss issues of religious belief and practice – but try not

to involve ourselves in world politics! Local religious leaders are invited to briefly set out their perspective on a particular issue, followed by questions, lively discussion and refreshments.

Currently, we are planning a visit to St Paul’s Cathedral in July, a summer barbeque and, at the end of the year, a Christmas/ Chanukah concert at Valentine’s Mansion.

Residents may also be interested in joining us on our annual tour to places of religious importance in the Holy Land. This year, the trip is planned for the autumn half-term (21 to 28 October).

Robert Hampson was a remarkably intelligent man and a fine scholar. He knew German, Latin, Greek, classical Hebrew and Arabic. He loved reading the Bible and saying the psalms in the original Hebrew. Every year, he used to go to Germany to take part in a Jewish/Christian Bible study week. For a while, Robert lived in a little village in Palestine to improve his spoken Arabic.

Robert did have strong opinions, not always popular. In both his sermons and his writing, he tended not to echo the liberal views that are the current consensus in the higher echelons of the Church of England. Neither did he pretend that, despite their many similarities, there were not significant differences between Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

He will be much missed. May his memory be a blessing and an inspiration to others.

y 1929, the club council was concerned about poor attendance at both their winter meetings and their summer outings. It decided to reduce the winter meetings to two per month, one to be held at the Woodford Memorial Hall and the other at a member’s home. Membership at that time was about 60, but average attendance was only nine.

From 1931 to the outbreak of the Second World War, membership continued to decline. This was despite the fact the population of the area was increasing. There had been steady development up to the 1920s followed by a lull, but with housing projects such as the Monkhams Estate and the Nightingale Estate in the 1930s, the population again increased.

In the fourth of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary year, club member Alan Simpson offers some insight into the group’s history, which in turn provides a pictorial record of our changing surroundings & Woodford Urban District; in 1937, the new authority was elevated to the status of a municipal borough.

A small hardcore of active members continued to function and hold annual exhibitions, but at the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, the society discontinued its activities.

During this time, many of the big old houses in Woodford, which had been photographed for the Emler Collection, were lost and Woodford changed from being an agricultural area into a dormitory suburb. The census for 1931 shows the population of Woodford as 23,946. This includes parts of the area now known as South Woodford. Wanstead at that time had a population of 19,183. By 1933, the population of Woodford had increased to 26,840, but Wanstead had barely changed at 19,710.

In 1934, the Woodford Urban District was amalgamated with Wanstead to form the Wanstead

founding member (also called Henry Malby), met George Hall and some other old members to discuss the revival of Woodford Photographic Society activities.

Bernard Cook offered the use of Fellowship House for a meeting and an announcement was published in the local press. Then Councillor Cormacy, another member of the club, asked the society to reform at the community centre in Wanstead House, but after a heated debate, it was decided by vote that the Woodford Photographic Society would keep its independence.

Fortnightly meetings were arranged, to be held at

Brooklands Preparatory School, Churchfields, while annual exhibitions were to be held at the Congregational church hall on George Lane.

FG Newmarch resumed office as president. He was the natural choice because of his prominence and his long association with the society, having served as president before the war. George Hall was elected chairman, Henry Malby became secretary and William (Billy) Cook became treasurer.

Before the war, the elected officers had been known as the council, but from this time they were called the committee.

The first post-war meeting was held at Brooklands Preparatory School on 25 September 1945 and the attendance book shows 15 members and four visitors were present. Regular reports of the first meetings appeared in the Woodford Times and these show the activities were based on the tradition established before the war, with senior members giving lectures and demonstrations.

In 1952, the venue was moved to St Barnabas School in association with the youth centre there.

The committee arranged a programme of 42 meetings, held during term time. A darkroom was set up in part of an old air raid shelter. The average membership around that time was 37.

Eventually, the association with the youth centre was severed as the youngsters were not interested in photography. The club applied for a direct letting to the education authority and was granted favourable terms because of the status of the society as a cultural and educational body.

orn and bred in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, the wife and I relocated to Woodford Green in May of last year to help out with our first granddaughter.

Photography as a hobby has been a big part of my life for over 35 years. It was after our return from a holiday in France in 1980 that I realised the trusted 110 cartridge-based film camera was not to be trusted. Basically, I think we got 12 pictures from three films used – and it was a long way to go back!

With the birth of our son a year later, I needed a reliable camera to record the milestones. In those days, there were no online bargains, just a Kays catalogue to spread the payments (£60 got me a Praktica MTL3, which gave me so much joy).

In the 18th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Alan Taylor offers his advice for those new to the world of photography club at a local pit where he was a deputy. Now, I was taking pictures for other people to see and comment on. This was out of my comfort zone. But as the meetings went on, I got more confident and entering competitions became the norm.

My rule was: don’t take a judge’s comments personally; if, at the end of the day, ‘you’ like the picture, that’s what matters.

While at the club, I held the post of competition secretary first, then secretary, treasurer and vice-chairman, organising different events and trips away. Since our move south, it has opened up a whole new photographic game. I found the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society (WWPS) on the internet.

If you are new to photography, the best advice I can think of is to take time to look at as many pictures as you can, in

exhibitions, magazines or, even better, at your local camera club like WWPS. It’s then you will find what is actually ‘floating your boat’ in terms of subject matter. Being a member of a club gives you ideas on what to take.

Themed competitions such as song titles or patterns are always firm favourites. They really get you thinking outside the box.

Look at the club’s programme and, in any order, select three evenings, a social night, a competition night and a visiting speaker. This will give you a good idea if it’s for you.

What of my ambitions now? To find new places to photograph, now we are ‘darn sarf’.

or my talk on famous paintings of London, I will show a wide range of pictures from the 18th to the 20th centuries.

Giovanni Antonio Canal – better known as Canaletto (1697–1768), was a star Venetian artist, but he travelled to London to seek even wider fame and fortune, and crucially arrived here with letters of introduction to the highest strata of society. His painting The Thames and City of London from Richmond House (1747) from the Duke’s house in Whitehall shows the river’s sweep with tiny brushstrokes – still and blue and glassy, ladies strolling along the river’s terrace, a Venetian galley having travelled all the way here and distant St Paul’s dominating the skyline.

Claude Monet (1840–1926) arrived in London as a refugee from the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871). The most famous of the Impressionists, he painted The Thames below Westminster (1871). His London is grey and murky, the river painted in short stabbing strokes. In the background, the newly built Houses of Parliament are lost in the mist of a foggy day, the figures on the wooden jetty are indistinct. As his success and sales grew and he got older, he returned to London from 1900 to 1903 to paint a series of pictures of the Houses of Parliament with the form of Big Ben disappearing into a soft haze of colour. On the steps of the

National Gallery, James Tissot (1836–1902) – he anglicised his name from the French Jacques Joseph Tissot – painted a more mysterious picture, London Visitors (1873). At least, it was to the critics who didn’t like it.

A woman points to the square from the gallery’s steps, whilst the gentleman accompanying her points towards a guidebook and what to see next in London, but who has dropped the cigar on the gallery’s steps? An unseen man she wants to meet surreptitiously?

By contrast to the misty gloom of the capital, Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) portrayed the bright, dappled sunshine of Hyde Park

(1890) as it flickers through the trees alongside Rotten Row lined with carriages. The foliage is all greens, oranges and yellows, while the shadows are in soft mauves and pink dabs of paint.

In contrast to these grand scenes of buildings and famous parks, I will also show a quiet suburban scene: Harry Bush’s (1925–1994) oil on panel of The Tiled Kitchen (1954). His daughter, Janet, is seen washing up in her SW19 kitchen: the green and white tiled wall, lino on the floor, knobbly old fashioned 1930s-style taps, electric light and kettle and a pantry cupboard full of pots and pans – a real-life kitchen-sink drama.
