Useful numbers in and around South Woodford…

It’s easy to add a festive twist to just about anything. TV ads are a prime example.

Last year, we saw a monster become a thoughtful gift-giver (John Lewis) and a carrot find love MR. S. WOODFORD during the holiday season (Aldi). Shortly after this issue is published, our screens will once again be adorned with the work of those masters of Yuletide spin, the advertising creatives.

And if rumours are true, Sir Elton John will be heading up John Lewis’ latest entry in the festive TV ad battle. Here at the South Woodford Village Gazette, we strive to add a similar dose of Christmas spirit to our pages at this time of year. But compiling an editorial plan for our final issue of 2018 did not require a multi-million pound budget, nor did it require a heartstring-tugging soundtrack… or any carrots, for that matter. There’s never any shortage of local seasonal events to highlight or festive artwork to display as we step into Christmas.

LOCAL MPs

The concept of Christmas-ising the world around us goes hand in hand with the sometimes derided and sometimes celebrated notion of the commercialisation of the festival. But leaving aside the debates surrounding the meaning of Christmas, there is a simple principle at work here, and it’s called upselling. Christmas is, in many ways, the greatest upsell story ever told, with most of us finding ourselves easily swayed to buy more than we need.

As a free magazine, we may not have to worry about selling copies or upselling subscriptions, but if we did, I doubt we would need any flamboyant stars to help us do so. Following a record number of visitors to this year’s Woodford Festival art trail, participating artists have agreed to make the event an annual occurrence (the festival itself is biennial). “Plans are forming to hold open house and open studios over several weekends, with workshops and classes to be held during the week in schools, community venues and local open spaces,” said organiser and mosaic artist Amanda Whittle, whose studio on Monkhams Avenue was one of several open to visitors

during October’s festival. The new art trail – which will be open to artists from or connected to Woodford, Woodford Wells, Woodford Green, South Woodford and Woodford Bridge – is set to launch next summer, with a meeting to be held at the end of November for all those interested in participating. “If you are a local artist and would like to show your work or you are a local business who would like to support this venture, please get in touch.” Email amandawmosaic@hotmail.com

Members of the Rotary Club of Woodford Green will host an evening Christmas meal and celebration on 10 December featuring guest of honour Debbi Hodge, the president of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland.

An organisation that delivers non-partisan education on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be hosting a peace-promoting event at an undisclosed location in Woodford this November.

“East London and Essex Liberal Synagogue and St Mary’s Church in South Woodford invite you to hear the stories of two peace activists: one Israeli and one Palestinian, who are currently touring the UK,” said Revd Ian Tarrant. Jews, Christians and people of all faiths and none are encouraged to join the free Invest in Peace event, which is run in partnership with Solutions Not Sides, a UK-based educational programme that seeks to tackle anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim hate. Work underway to make station step-free

Work to facilitate step-free access to the westbound platform of South Woodford Tube station is now underway. “We apologise to customers for the temporary closure of one of the entrances… We are installing a ramped entrance and making other improvements, including providing new ticket machines and better lighting. When finished, this work will ensure both platforms are accessible to all customers, including disabled or older customers, parents or carers with buggies and people with heavy luggage,” said Caroline Sheridan, London Underground’s Director of Renewals and Enhancements.

The station will remain open for the duration of the work – which is scheduled to finish by summer 2019 – but is only accessible via the eastbound entrance on Station Approach.

Local child psychotherapist joins book signing event

South Woodford child psychotherapist and author Usha Chudasama took part in a group book signing at Redbridge Central Library in October.

The event – attended by the Mayor of Redbridge – was the culmination of a collaboration between writing groups Essex Authors and Hertfordshire Authors, from which 15 writers each donated one of their books for library use. “The two author communities had their books on display for three weeks prior to the event, giving readers the chance to browse the written creations before having the opportunity to meet us in person,” said Usha, who published her book Your Happy Child last year. “In my book, I guide parents and their children to shift negative perceptions and build a strong, positive mindset.”

To celebrate 100 years since the first women in the UK won the right to vote, Redbridge Museum is launching an exhibition on 13 November to explore the lives of women in Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford over the past century.

“From the days of ‘mistress and servant’ to the lives of today’s communities, this exhibition tells the story of local women in their own words,” said Gerard Greene, manager of the museum, which is located in Redbridge Central Library, Ilford. Former Woodford resident Sylvia Pankhurst is featured, along with the Wanstead and Woodford Women for Peace group. The museum also worked with Woodford County High School to explore local suffragettes and former pupils who went to university at a time when this was rare for women. The display runs until 27 April. Indian restaurant Grand Trunk Road on High Road, South Woodford won the Best Restaurant in East London category at this year’s Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards. Voted for by members of the public, the award was presented to Head Chef Dayashankar Sharma by Ainsley Harriet at the O2 arena in September. “We are so very thankful for all the support that Grand Trunk Road has received since our opening in 2016. LED lighting scheme delivered a year early

Remembering the fighting footballers of WWI

Redbridge Council’s plans to replace 17,500 street lamps across the borough with energyefficient LEDs is set to finish by the end of November, a year earlier than originally planned when the scheme was launched in 2017. “Keeping our streets safe is one of our priorities, and the new LED lights are helping both drivers and pedestrians, and delivering excellent levels of energy savings,” said Councillor John Howard. The £4.4m project is expected to save 60% in energy costs.

Laundry vending machine at South Woodford station

An eco-friendly laundry vending machine is due to be installed at South Woodford Tube station this November. “The drop-and-go style vending machines act as a gateway to the new greencleaning revolution, enabling users to simply drop off their dirties at the machine and collect them 24 hours later at a cost of just £3 per garment,” said a spokesperson for VClean Life, which only uses biodegradable soap and has already launched the initiative at Epping station.

“These new machines will be completely disrupting the current ‘dirty’ laundry sector that hasn’t changed for decades to promote a future without perchloroethylene (PERC), the dry cleaning chemical known to cause cancer, neurological disorder, kidney and liver damage and is so toxic it must be buried in containers.”

Amy’s Day 2018 raises £22k Amy Goacher was 19 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2010. The South Woodford teenager, who went to Wanstead High School, passed away in 2012 having spent the last three weeks of her life in St Francis Hospice with her parents Bob and Tina, sister Megan and dog Maisie.

Before she died, she wrote individual letters to her mum, dad and sister with her request being that they continue to raise money to help find a cure.

Her family have since hosted an annual golf and evening BBQ at Wanstead Golf Club and have raised £104,000 in six years.

A big thank you must go to Telford Homes who have been the main sponsor of the day each year but also to Berkeley Homes and the many local shops and businesses (shown here) that have contributed each year along with all the people who attend the event and give so much.

The majority of the money raised goes to Prof Ian McNeish, who was Amy’s consultant at Barts Hospital during her battle and forms part of Ovarian Cancer Action, with the remainder going to St Francis Hospice and SUDEP, in memory of Amy’s best friend.

Local photographer Geoff Wilkinson, who is a regular contributor to the South Woodford Village Gazette, will open a new exhibition at his 84 Gallery on Nightingale Lane in Wanstead this November, displaying images from a project documenting locations in the East End of London connected with Jack the Ripper. “Most of the photos have been taken on cold, dark, rainy nights at infamous locations for maximum atmosphere. It seems appropriate, therefore, to open

The display – which will be unveiled on 24 November (6pm to 9pm) and runs until 21 December – will feature the image shown here of Chamber Street, E1, close to where Francis Cole was murdered in Swallow Gardens on 13 February 1891.

“There is dispute as to whether Francis Cole was a Ripper victim or not, but I am coming down on the side of her being one and including the site in the show,” added Geoff.

Playground improvements in Elmhurst Gardens

Snaresbrook school opens edible playground

Improvements have been made to the children’s playground in Elmhurst Gardens in South Woodford. “Elmhurst Gardens has had a complete refurbishment, including repainting all of the play equipment, replacing rope nets, seats and chains, plus completely replacing the safety surfacing,” said a spokesperson for Redbridge Council. The work – which took three weeks to complete, finishing on 1 October – was carried out in consultation with the Friends of Elmhurst Gardens. The project was funded by a £1.6m investment pot for improving the borough’s green spaces. “Elmhurst Gardens and Clayhall Park are the first to benefit from the council’s commitment to upgrade facilities in the borough’s parks.” Other projects completed this year include new play equipment in Ray Park, Woodford Green.

Following almost a year of work by pupils and staff, Snaresbrook Primary School officially opened its edible playground in September. The project – which has seen a large part of the playground area turned over to vegetable growing – is part of a Trees For Cities initiative.

“This is a great idea, getting the kids involved with growing their own food at such an early stage. It is so important that we all make that connection with the earth, getting our hands dirty, as it were… All the kids seem genuinely enthused and involved, it would be great to see other schools in the area taking on the edible playground idea. The staff, parents and children at Snaresbrook Primary School are certainly showing the way,” said Councillor Paul Donovan.

“Wanstead and Woodford Chess Club actively encourages junior members and believes learning to develop their chess skills helps them develop as young people. Launch of ‘refreshed’ Local Forums

Take the Tube, bus and train to see Santa

Redbridge Council has ‘refreshed’ the format of its Local Forums.

“To kick-start a new collaborative approach, the first forum in each neighbourhood will be an opportunity to agree priorities for their area,” said a council spokesperson. The meetings – which include a Q&A session with the council leader – will be held three times a year in each of the borough’s four neighbourhoods.

South Woodford and Churchfields wards will join with Monkhams, Bridge, Wanstead Village and Wanstead Park to form the West Neighbourhood, which has its first forum scheduled for 19 November, from 6.45pm at All Saints’ Church in Woodford Green. “Nothing is set in stone and it will be for individual forums to collaborate on the format that works best for their area,” said Councillor Helen Coomb. Local residents are invited to meet Santa aboard his special Epping Ongar Railway train this December. “Many local parents have already visited us and a number of parents have held children’s parties on our trains.

Don’t forget, Santa’s vintage bus picks up from outside Epping Tube station, which means we can extend a particularly convenient and warm welcome to everyone living in South Woodford and indeed any station along the Central Line,” said Dean Walton, the railway’s general manager. South Woodford Business Forum inaugural meeting

Drugs: is the time now ripe for decriminalisation?

The inaugural meeting of the recently established South Woodford Business Forum took place on 17 October. Jointly organised by Rena Pathak of the South Woodford Society and Elaine Atkins, chair of Churchfields ward panel, the hour-long discussion explored the advantages and challenges facing businesses on George Lane and was attended by representatives of E Aves Opticians, Boots, Crescendo music shop, Dr Bawa (skin aesthetics), Tally Lucas Associates (accountants) and event hosts Lily’s Indulgence. “Although I am not a business owner, I could see we needed a business forum for local businesses as they literally and figuratively are the backbone of our community,” said Rena.

A discussion exploring the decriminalisation of drugs will take place at Wanstead Library this November. Hosted by the East London Humanists, the debate will be led by Simon, a recovered drug addict who knows only too well the damage drugs can cause. “Simon will explain his view on how ineffectual the current law is and the benefits of reform, using examples such as the Portuguese model,” said a spokesperson for the group. In Portugal – which decriminalised all drugs in 2001 – there are three drug overdose deaths for every million citizens.

Although this low death rate can’t be attributable solely to decriminalisation, comparable numbers in the UK show 44.6 deaths per million. The event will take place on 26 November from 7.30pm (visitors welcome; free). Visit swvg.co/elh

After attending a craft fair last year, I wondered why we didn’t have something similar in South Woodford, since we are lucky to have the Woodford Memorial Hall as an ideal venue. And so, the craft market was born in February this year, with the aim of supporting local makers and designers and raising muchneeded funds for the Memorial Hall itself. All fees from table holders and profits raised by a pop-up cafe go directly to the charity which runs the hall.

It was constructed in 1902 by John Reynolds Roberts, a local philanthropist who established one of the UK’s first department stores in Stratford in 1870 (the JR Roberts store became the equivalent of Harrods in east London and at its height employed 500 members of staff ). ’ve lived in South Woodford since 2007, when my family moved here from France.

I love the juxtaposition of hightech and traditional materials, and my creations include bags and pouches I design myself and 3D-printed objects.

The building itself was built in the style of Arts and Craft architecture, which was an influential movement of the late 19th century that attempted to re-establish the skills of craftsmanship being threatened by mass production and industrialisation. The Arts and Craft movement had as its leader William Morris, who had lived at Woodford Manor (which is part of the site on which the hall

stands) as a child between the ages of seven and 14 and whose father is buried in the grounds of St Mary’s Church.

Over 100 years old and in constant use, the hall frequently needs repair work. In recent years, the floor of the front hall has been replaced, the toilets refurbished and the roof and steeple repaired – there will always be something that needs doing to keep it open and serving the needs of the local community.

bout a year and a half ago, seeing the state of politics and our local area, I decided to get involved in the political scene. A year on, I was elected to represent and defend the area I grew up in and love so much as a Conservative councillor, representing Churchfields ward.

Our area is suffering because we are not the priority. Ilford is…

Like many other residents who have lived in the area for many years, I feel that our area has declined somewhat. Recently, Woodford has become dirtier and more polluted, neglected by the Labour-run council. New residential developments have not been supported by the required infrastructure and local people are suffering.

Since being elected earlier this year, I’ve received hundreds of emails from fellow residents who I help and represent. We have been working on issues such as parking, bin collection, flooding, traffic, planning and much more.

Since the May election, I’ve had many distressed residents contact me about school places and how they cannot get a local place for their child. Woodford does not have enough school places to meet local demand.

Despite this, funds have been directed to schools in the south of the borough, where places

are under-subscribed. The problem has been exacerbated by improper checks on whether children live in the local area when applying for schools.

As an area with outstanding Ofsted-rated schools, Woodford is a target for school application abuse. I’ve been working with the council to improve the school admission process, which includes more rigorous checks and alterations to the admission criteria to give residents a fairer chance of sending their child to a local school, as they deserve.

Another issue in our area is the cleanliness of our streets. I’m pressing the council on this issue as well, and why the council is failing to keep our streets clean. We need a clear cleaning strategy, identifying how often and when our streets are cleaned. This includes a quality review of the work being carried out.

Crime is a huge issue for residents. Did you know that our dedicated Woodford officers are often sent to Ilford to patrol instead of being in Woodford?

Our area is suffering because we are not the priority. Ilford is.

As local residents, we must continually make sure that our voices are heard and that our views are not ignored. I’ve become a local councillor, but every resident is able to stand up for our area. If you are interested in getting involved to help, please reach out to me.

oodford is a wonderful place to live and I feel fortunate to be able to represent residents here, bringing your concerns to our Labour council and advocating on your behalf.

We want to be as open and accessible as possible in the council…

Since I was elected in May, I have been spending as much time as possible out in our community, listening to your thoughts, concerns and ideas.

One issue I hear about often is our local schools. Parents are worried about school places and education funding.

Unfortunately, the Conservative government have handed down severe cuts to education of over £6m and these cuts have hit our area hard. However, despite these gruelling and unnecessary cuts to school funding, Redbridge Council have made education a priority. Since Labour took control of Redbridge in 2014, the number of schools rated outstanding or good by Ofsted has increased and our borough now boasts some of the highest education standards in England.

As for school places, the council have invested over £88m on this issue and numbers have increased by around 13,000 in the last decade. However, I am keeping a close eye on supply and demand and am determined to make sure local families are adequately provided for.

I have also heard from many residents who are concerned about crime, especially violent crime affecting our local young people. This is an issue I am particularly passionate about. I am working closely with the council and our local Safer Neighbourhoods Team to address crime in our area and come up with innovative solutions to make our streets safer.

As a local resident myself I know parking can be an issue in our area and I am working closely with the council to properly review all our options.

There is currently an ongoing consultation on parking controls on Horn Lane and adjoining roads. I know residents are concerned about the outcome of this consultation – I’ll be meeting with the cabinet member responsible and the council officers to make sure everyone’s views are heard.

We want to be as open and accessible as possible in the council and so we’ve introduced Local Forum meetings. Local Forums combine formal and informal opportunities for residents to work together with officers, councillors and other key partners, like the police, to find solutions to local issues.

Our first Local Forum will be on 19 November from 6.45pm at All Saints’ Church on Inmans Row, Woodford Green. I would love to meet as many residents as possible at the meeting, so please do come along.

Remembering

Woodford’s war dead

O

ur first known casualty was Territorial Gunner William Salmon of 32 Marlborough Road, South Woodford, who accidentally drowned on 13 August 1914 while swimming in the Thames.

Lance Corporal Edward Rashbrook from 49 Peel Road, a regular soldier with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, was the first to be killed in action on 13 September 1914 during the Battle of the Aisne.

Leyton teacher William Bradley was unsuitable for the army, but joined the Metropolitan Special Constabulary. The 45-year-old was called from his home in Primrose Road by an air raid alert, and hastened to his reporting point at the top of George Lane.

However, before he could report in, he collapsed and died there from heart failure.

Becoming soaked while training in Ireland, William Bell went on to develop pleurisy, dying on 17 November 1915 at the War Hospital occupying today’s Woodford County High School. Nearby was his home at 18 Oxford Road with his widow and orphaned children.

He considered it his duty to volunteer.

Leslie Black of Buckingham Road was a Sub-Lieutenant in the Naval Division fighting on land like a soldier, and on 13 November 1916 at the Battle of the Ancre, he sustained severe shrapnel wounds to his face and thigh, plus a fractured femur.

He died from septicaemia in Oxford in the presence of his mother on 13 December, and is buried in the family grave at St John’s Church, Buckhurst Hill.

Also commemorated there, his brother William, killed at Ypres on 24 September 1917. Leslie sang in the choir at St Mary’s Church, where there is a memorial to him. During the evening before the battle, he was visited by his

His biplane suffered structural failure, and while being fully alert, he fell with the machine to his death on Salisbury Plain. No parachutes in those days.

on 29 November 1916 before returning to Stow Maries airfield in Essex. In the gloom, he was unaware of the parked lorry which began rolling silently forwards, crushing his head against his own vehicle. He is buried at Maldon.

Two died on 11 November 1918, Geoffrey Gunning of Prospect Road and John Bovey from Wynndale Road, both victims of Spanish flu. This also claimed our only known female casualty, WRAF driver Grace Collins of 39 Squadron at North Weald, whose mother ran the coffee shop in Mill Lane. She died on 6 November 1918 and is buried in St Peter-in-the-Forest Churchyard near Whipps Cross; daffodils flower on her grave each spring.

During 23 February 1916, a German shell wounded Second Lieutenant Douglas Geere of Mornington Road and some of his gunners. As he went forward to assist them, a second shell killed both him and two of his men. He is commemorated by

PHOTOGRAPHY BIOGRAPHY

I

’ve always had an interest in photography but never really had the natural talent to produce the pictures I so admired.

Starting at 10 years old with a Box Brownie, then using my father’s Kodak Folding Bellows Camera, nothing seemed as exciting as loading your film roll shut away in a dark cupboard. At 20, my father-in-law introduced me to SLRs and 35mm slides – sometimes, I wish he hadn’t.

He also taught me how to develop my own black and white photographs – so glad he did. The thrill of watching your own photograph appear in the development tray was amazing.

However, the expense prevented me following this hobby fully.

I moved through the digital compact camera era loving the fact I could click, check and delete to my heart’s content. Photography was now

affordable, but my main subjects were my children and the time delay on a digital compact was a real drawback. Press the button and the kids moved before the shot was taken. Grandchildren meant it was time to invest in a DSLR camera, but limited funds only allowed for entry level equipment. With the camera set on auto, I could take hundreds of photos that I now realise were just ‘snapshots’ of family life.

A day’s tuition class at Nikon with my DX5500 taught me how to take the camera off auto and gave me the confidence to start working with manual settings, but I was now at a loss on how to improve my photographic ability. That was a couple of years back when I fortunately came across Woodford and Wanstead Photography Society.

My initial call to the club was responded to by Kevin Wright, who was sympathetic about my photography knowledge (or lack

thereof ) and he convinced me to take advantage of the free trial visits before joining.

I enjoyed the club experience from day one – the other members were very friendly, easy to talk to and responsive to any questions I had, no matter how basic they were. Guest lectures, competition nights, basic Lightroom and Photoshop tutorial classes, trips out or just quiet social evenings have all become times I really look

forward to. It took a few months to find the courage to enter a competition but I decided I would only learn by having my work critiqued by a judge.

I never enter expecting to win but I aim to have a picture ‘held back’ alongside the final winners, which is immensely satisfying. I still know my place in terms of photographic ability, but I‘ve now learnt to recognise some of the obvious things judges may criticise. I also have a much wider circle of like-minded friends.

Yes, we did have a few events where attendances were lower than we had hoped – although those who were present at them were privileged to hear some great performers. But for the most part, venues were packed to capacity and, most importantly, people were

Audience participation was a key feature of some events and I’d like to make a special mention here of Kathleen Savage and the Woodford Singers’ Mamma Mia workshop, which coaxed 150 festivalgoers into harmony, opera diva Deborah Aloba giving singing lessons and Dave Rich and Al Neville and friends for getting their audiences to join in well-known Sixties numbers at the Hawkey Hall and Lily’s Indulgence respectively.

The Woodford Festival Association is grateful for the financial support of Redbridge Council via Vision RCL as well as to a number of commercial firms who generously sponsored the 2018 event. Here’s to next time!

feel sure you will have noticed that the majority of our South Woodford traders are either bent on getting us to buy or sell houses or to make ourselves more beautiful. That is if they are not among the 56 establishments offering us food and drink.

In South Woodford there is truly a bombardment of ‘body stuff’. On our doorstep we can find help to achieve vibrant, smoother, younger skin; trimmer bottoms; exotic nails; snow-white teeth and suntanned limbs; the promise of gloriously flat (even concave) tummies like those confidently displayed by teenagers when they hasten so attractively into their short summer tops. Can you sense my envy?

As you know, I was born here, in Grove Hill to be exact, so I’ve seen changes, though not nearly as many as you might think. We’ve always had a few local hairdressers and a barber or two for the boys. Some of you will remember Charles, just a few yards along from our much lamented Ho Ho restaurant.

Inside were discreetly curtained cubicles so you could be shielded from the embarrassment of being seen with your head covered in curlers. Now, you have a choice of 22 hair salons, mostly unisex, mostly open-plan. Their names range across an alluringly

Even more in number are the shops that aspire to transform us, inside and out. I am particularly in awe of the supreme, almost miraculous, optimism of a salon just down below Greggs called Permanent Beauty.

I can say without hesitation that this pervasive and mushrooming quest for the body beautiful represents one of the most noticeable changes to our shopping streets. No fewer than five ‘parlours’ major on nailcare.

There are three tattoo studios staffed by qualified artists. In total, 48 establishments are entirely dedicated to making us more beautiful. You can opt for Thai massage and Elemis facials at Essensuals. Arissa Beauty include eyelash extensions.

The Champagne Beauty Clinic offer dermaplaning facials. I love their advice to passers-by: “Never underestimate the power of your lashes”. At the Enigma Beauty Clinic, Gatineau antiageing facials form part of their expert treatment range. The list goes on: you can benefit from dermabrasion, Lycon waxing, balayage and non-surgical facelifts any day of the week.

One of the delightful features of these practitioners of the beauty industry is the sense of intimacy, a personal relationship with your aesthetician: first names abound in the shop titles: Lis and Finn, Lulu, Deea, Giovanni, Isabel and Zak are just a few. You sense that you will find sympathy, friendliness, relaxation, tranquillity. There’s even a dash of philosophy to enhance the experience and exercise our grey cells: at Sapphire Salon, we are invited to consider that “Beauty is the promise of happiness”.

The mission statement at the BB Clinic reads: “We believe that beautiful is also good”.

At the Me and You Spa on Hermon Hill, where you can have “a body scrub with almond milk plus much more”, you are encouraged to “Seek beauty in everything”.

obert Louis Stevenson’s acclaimed children’s novel has been adapted

by Ben Crocker into a funfilled, swashbuckling pirate adventure for Woodford Pantomime’s next production.

This is the first time Woodford Pantomime have produced Treasure Island in their 58-year history and tickets are already selling well for what promises to be a raucous and hilarious production, involving ferocious pirates, an elderly parrot and, of course, a healthy dose of audience participation.

With six decades of experience, the Woodford Pantomime is a well-oiled machine. The committee’s preparation for this event began way back in February, at the end of the previous run. With the cast firmly in place by mid-June, rehearsals

began in earnest from midSeptember. As ever, this group of talented amateur performers are in good hands, directed by Dawn Young, whose previous credits include Dick Whittington, Cinderella, Jack and The Beanstalk and Sleeping Beauty.

Alongside the cast and director, there are the musicians, choreographers, backstage crew, front of house staff, chaperones and box office staff… the list goes on. All of whom work tirelessly to create a fantastic experience for all the family.

Opened in 1955 by former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the Sir James Hawkey Hall has always been the home of Woodford Pantomime, and with good reason: there is no other venue locally large enough to accommodate them! Once the tiered seating goes in, it can

Every year, Woodford Pantomime organises after-show charity collections. In recent years, audiences have been incredibly generous in their support of

collections for the Meningitis Research Foundation, Chigwell Riding Trust and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). For the 2019 panto season, their chosen charity is ELHAP, a special needs adventure playground based in Woodford Bridge. ELHAP provide adventure play opportunities to disabled and disadvantaged children, young people and adults across north-east London and Essex. This is also the chosen charity of the current Mayor of Redbridge.

Flat out value Even if your flat is immaculately decorated and located in an up-and-coming area, it can still be losing value, even when the market is buoyant, says Debra Rose of solicitors Wiseman Lee

T

his is the situation that can arise when the term of the lease on a flat has less than around 80 years remaining – something that can have a major impact on its value. However, if you own a leasehold property, it is possible to substantially extend the remaining term, even without the consent of your landlord.

A leaseholder can extend the lease for 90 years…

That is because the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 gives leaseholders the right to extend their lease once they have owned the property for two years. Under the act, a leaseholder can extend the lease for 90 years in addition to the term that is remaining for ‘peppercorn rent’, meaning without ground rent. This means a property which previously had 10 years remaining on the lease would then have 100 years remaining.

You will need to pay the landlord a premium in order to extend the lease. The amount you pay is calculated using a formula set out in legislation; however, this has variables, which is why a surveyor’s expertise is required.

You will also need to cover your landlord’s reasonable legal and valuation costs, as well as Land Registry fees.

A surveyor will provide higher and lower estimates for the

premium to be paid for the extension of your lease. A solicitor will serve notice on the landlord on your behalf of your intention to seek an extension to the lease. This will state the premium you propose to pay. They will also handle the conveyancing of the lease, ensuring the terms are not disadvantageous to you.

Where a premium cannot be agreed with the landlord, a tribunal will determine the cost of the extension.

Failing to follow the process properly can even lead to the loss of the right to extend the lease for a set period of time, costing you money and potentially jeopardising the saleability of your property – precisely the opposite of what it is intended to achieve.

As a leaseholder, you also have the option to negotiate with the landlord to agree your own terms for the extension of the lease.

For example, you might wish to extend for a period longer than 90 years. However, the landlord does not have to agree to an informal arrangement and if he does agree will often press for an increase in ground rent.

If no agreement can be reached through negotiation, you still have the option to pursue the statutory route.

Regardless of which option you choose, it is important to seek professional advice when extending your lease.

T

his time two years ago Saint Francis Hospice entered my life as my mum entered Saint Francis Hospice. It was life-changing on many levels. Mostly, of course, because my beloved mum was dying and went in to receive end-of-life care.

They are full of laughter, love, compassion and camaraderie…

But it was also life-changing because once I and my family experienced what a hospice does, and in particular the care which Mum received, there was no way we couldn’t feel anything but compelled to support the charity by raising funds and awareness.

For me, this awareness takes on two forms. General awareness about the differences between a hospital and a hospice as well as awareness that Saint Francis Hospice in Havering-atte-Bower serves the whole of the borough of Redbridge as well as other areas. It has an 18-bed, in-patient unit as well as Hospice at Home, which provides palliative care to Redbridge residents. Saint Francis serves to maintain life for those with life-limiting illnesses and give the most comfortable and dignified end-of-life care possible for the terminally ill.

If you have no experience of a hospice, as it was for me, you may imagine them to be frightening, cheerless places full of sickness and death. Like me, you couldn’t be more wrong!

They are full of laughter, love, compassion and camaraderie.

They become ‘home’ for a few days or a few weeks, not just for the patient but for their family too. The family are supported through this difficult time just as the patients are. The momentC my mum entered Saint Francis, I felt like a weight had been liftedM from my shoulders, and the Y support and concern for us all was tangible. And it doesn’t stop CM when the patient passes away; the hospice offer a bereavementMY counselling service too.

CY The opening of the Saint FrancisCMY charity shop on Wanstead K High Street will hopefully raise awareness in these parts.

Much-needed awareness for a charity that receives just 28% of its funding from the NHS and needs to raise £7.8m a year (that’s £21,000 a day) to cover the costs of its specialist end-of-life care services. Some 1,693 patients were cared for by Saint Francis in the past year.

So, now you see why it is so important to us to raise funds and awareness for Saint Francis.

We have done this through walks and runs. My 84-year-old father accompanied us on the 10k Starwalk for the hospice this year and my son ran the Bristol Half Marathon in his nanny’s memory last year. And hopefully, this article will have raised awareness locally and encouraged a few readers to dig deep and donate to this wonderful cause or get involved in fundraising for the hospice – none of us know when we or a loved one might need their help.

Changes for life In the second of a series of articles looking at healthy lifestyle changes, Andy and Amanda Rushton talk about nutrition and how you can boost your wellbeing in the run-up to the festive period

N

utrition and diet are words that often create much uncertainty and controversy, whether it be low carb, high fat, low sugar, low fat or low calorie. How do you know which is best? Not all eating plans will suit everyone, but there are some simple changes that will help.

cravings and our bodies feel they need more to satisfy us. With this, we get an insulin and energy spike and then a few hours later, we slump as the effect wears off, leaving us wanting more.

Signs you may be over-reliant on sugar are: experiencing a midafternoon slump, feeling dizzy or shaky and craving snacks.

Research has shown that, as a nation, we are now eating more ultra-processed food than ever before, with figures indicating 50% of the UK diet is made up of such foods. These foods are often mass-produced and made from multiple ingredients; we would recognise them as ready meals, crisps, biscuits, cake and sauces, to name a few. Many of these foods are high in unhealthy fats, sugar and salt and low in fibre and vitamins. The difficulty we face with these foods is the high sugar content creates further

Reducing sugar is not easy as it has so many different names. Be wise and look at some of your favourite packets; those words ending in ‘ose’ are the biggest clue (fructose, glucose, dextrose).

To start with, try removing the obvious sugars in your diet, avoid the biscuits and cakes and cut down the sugar in your hot drinks or fizzy pop.

Much of the evidence at the moment talks about eating a more natural diet with more wholefoods. These are foods

which are close to their natural form, such as sweet potato, carrots and parsnips – all of these contain naturally occurring carbs, but have an abundance of nutrients and will be slow release, which is much kinder to our digestive system. Leafy green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale, cauliflower and Brussels spouts help provide us with essential Vitamins A, C and K, along with minerals like iron and calcium. They also help promote a healthier gut, which leads to a healthier you! Healthy fats – such

as those in nuts and avocados – can help to keep you full while not adding the saturated fats we get from processed foods.

This doesn’t mean you have to cook everything from scratch, but I like to stick by the rule that if an item has more than a handful of ingredients or I can’t pronounce them, then it’s not ideal. Instead, explore different foods, aim for a variety of coloured fruit and veg and boost your immune system via your gut.

good breakfast is the best way to start the day, and a pretty good way to start the latest instalment in this article series.

Salway Cookhouse (172 High Road; 020 8559 2122) is the place to go for mouth-watering brunches such as Huevos a la Flamenca, which is sizzling eggs with chorizo and tomatoes.

Smiley general manager Sasha and his business manager and head chef Christian both grew up in the local area and used to run Junqi clothes shop on the same site. Christian’s father, Nick Logan, was the founder of The Face, Smash Hits! and Arena magazines. The culinary team source many of their products from other local suppliers, including smoked salmon from Wanstead Fish (119B High Street, Wanstead; 020 8989 4433) and freshly baked bread from Home Organic Bakery (1D Cowslip Road; 07551 097 774), along with brilliant Burford brown eggs.

David himself recently came to visit and the Huevos a la Flamenca is his recipe. I’ve tried it myself – I will be back for more!

Add these to the relative newcomers Dada Café (237 High Road; 07429 455 725), Kikirocs (90 George Lane; 07743 615 931) and Home Organic Bakery and we are getting spoilt for choice for a good coffee and brunch.

On the restaurant front, you may have noticed that Red Mantra, the bar and shisha lounge on George Lane near the station, closed over the summer and the building has been demolished.

I hear there are plans for redevelopment, so we will have to wait and see what comes next.

Turquoise Café (which replaces Dalchini at 127A High Road; 020 8504 3333) is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

They offer all-day breakfasts, vegetarian options, shepherd’s pie, homemade food, shakes, cakes and desserts. This is the spot if you like reasonably priced comfort food, and they also have an alcohol licence.

Meanwhile, Taxim has been rebranded and redecorated and is now called Divine (80 George Lane; 020 8989 9595). Husband and wife Ali and Pergul, who live in Leytonstone, opened Taxim five years ago and have now given it a facelift. Divine offers the same Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine as Taxim but has expanded the menu to include steak, seafood and vegetarian options.

Haz & Ollie Breakfast Bar is another newcomer (replacing Bhangra Beat at 49 Chigwell Road; 020 8989 3833), from the same team who run Caesar’s Palace in Wanstead. They are now offering us breakfasts, pancakes, paninis, sandwiches, wraps,

Another newcomer is Liban (replacing Chimichangas at 190 George Lane). The name is French for Lebanese and the restaurant and bar will offer a Lebanese menu with a French and Mediterranean influence. Liban’s all-day menu

will focus on freshly made and healthy tapas plates designed for sharing. The chef, sommelier, mixologist and management team have an impressive array of experience. With a well-chosen selection of wines and beers on offer, Liban even promises an authentic atmosphere with a sunroom, yearround Parisian terrace and souk.

We’ve also got a branch of Village Indiya opening before Christmas (replacing Wine Mill at 241 High Road). Village Indiya is being opened by award-winning chef Abdus Sahid and will offer a blend of traditional Asian and modern Indian cooking.

And once you’ve sampled some of South Woodford’s new gastronomic options, we’ve also got a couple of newcomers for body treatments to check out.

The ProAcu Clinic (where we used to have Needham’s at 104 George Lane; 020 3489 8960) is a wellness centre offering therapies such as acupuncture, reflexology, facials and massage.

Bar Bar Co was founded in Brentwood by owner and head barber Ali Kam. Opening soon in South Woodford, this will be the new hotspot for gents to get their classic cuts, beard trims, luxury wet shaves and coffee!

oodford Green Speakers (WGS) is a public speaking club affiliated to Toastmasters International.

In the third of a series of articles by members of the East London ME Support Group, Muriael Keogh explains what it’s like to live with an illness many believe is not real and why group support is vital

worked in PR for many years.

In 1974 I opened a musical instrument shop in Covent Garden and later, I became my husband’s manager in the music business. Life was very busy then. I had bundles of energy. While bringing up our two children, I was fortunate enough to be working from home.

The meetings help in so many ways. People feel less alone…

Around 2015 I began to feel very tired; my body ached and I would sleep much more than usual.

Various trips to doctors brought no answers. At that time, I was doing volunteer work every Tuesday at the British Heart Foundation shop on Wanstead High Street. I was coming home from the shop one day and found myself walking slower and slower until I came to a complete stop and could not move. I felt utterly exhausted. I eventually got home and slept for seven hours.

It was at this time I was diagnosed with ME (chronic fatigue syndrome). It was actually a relief to have the condition diagnosed as it was quite frightening not knowing what was happening to my body ME robs you of so much in your life because you don’t know how you will be feeling from one day to the next. I can be bed-bound on any given day of the week. It’s a matter of wait and see how you feel when you wake up.

We refer to a bed-bound day as ‘the crash’, which describes it perfectly. Then you have ‘the fog’ – losing word power in the middle of a sentence and losing track of things and time. It’s a real struggle and so very distressing when you were always a person who coped well in any given situation.

People with the condition often call me with regard to the support group. I hear how upset they are and their relief to find someone who understands what they are going through.

There does not seem to be one common denominator with ME. People come to our meetings with their stories and they are for the best part all different.

I was in a lonely place with this condition until I found the East London ME Support Group in 2016. The first meeting I attended was actually meant to be the final one. But I decided there and then to try to carry it on as it was a lifeline for fellow sufferers. It helps so much to be with people who understand you and your changed lifestyle. The meetings help in so many ways. People feel less alone.

If you have a friend or relation with ME, please contact the group. It would be great to have some funding (I am working on that too).

My wish is to raise awareness of ME – more research is urgently needed. People’s lives are being wasted.

he idea that anyone can ‘do it all’ is nonsense, unless we are prepared to sacrifice something – and more often than not, the sacrifice will be ourselves. I thought until recently that ‘doing it all’ was the ultimate goal. How wrong I was! Even though my friends and colleagues call me ‘Supermum’, most days I’m struggling.

Having four kids under five is hard work, but running two small businesses in Redbridge is even harder. The bureaucracy is mindblowing. When I opened Air-Yoga Studio in South Woodford eight years ago, it was tough. I used all my savings to turn around a run-down office that had been empty for two years. The gas meter had been stolen, it was December and snowing and there were so many holes in the walls. My dad and I completely redecorated the place and did our best to make the space warm and inviting.

I mostly change nappies, clean floors, make food and do the laundry…

It really has been a wonderful business: the people, the classes taught, the friendships made. I worked 16-hour days, teaching the whole timetable singlehanded just to make the business a success. Thankfully, we now

Oh, the laundry! Ironically, I used to teach people ‘how to breathe’ and now, honestly, for me I feel there is no time to breathe at all!

Earlier this year I opened Kikirocs cafe below Air-Yoga Studio, and once again it was a complete reno job: months of labour and savings wiped out yet again. The bureaucracy of opening a small business eight years on is still horrific; it makes life very difficult for small business owners.

Eventually, I opened the doors three months after giving birth to my girl and boy twins, Eliza and Jax. I already had Rocco, aged four, and Saskia (Kiki), aged two, at home. Rocco started school last summer so I also had the pleasure of being a new reception mum trying to take in the 101 things you need to

know about your child’s first year at school.

The cafe is just what I hoped it would be, inspired by small cafes I visited while in Oz. I felt South Woodford was crying out for some decent coffee, some smashed avo and a cheeky afternoon gin option. This is exactly what it is but it has come at a price: my hair colour, which is now a fashionable shade of platinum, as I like to call it, at the grand old age of 37.

A dear friend of mine recently gave me some advice after a cry for help. She said: “Kirsty, lower your expectations, even though I know you will find this hard

because you are awesome. Rather than berating yourself that you are not meeting your expectations, what about expecting less of yourself?”

This is my new mantra.

Being a working mum is hard, having a business in Redbridge is tough – social media makes it bittersweet. But the people of South Woodford are awesome.

My children are my world. AirYoga Studio and Kikirocs are my work but it has brought a community together in so many ways and for that I will always be proud.

ost locals will have heard of the magnificent Wanstead House and Catherine, the legendary heiress who once lived there. Regency gossip columns avidly followed the shocking twists of her life and Catherine’s story continues to resonate.

Historians usually portray her as a feeble woman who squandered the opportunity to become Queen of England and ended her life in ruin. But my book, The Angel and The Cad, challenges these myths. I hope to show that Catherine was in fact a remarkable woman, who challenged conventions and gained an important victory for women’s rights.

Contemporary newspapers reveal that Catherine was one of the most admired and influential women of her time, with a designer wardrobe and a large property empire. At the age of 21, she inherited 23,000 acres of land spread over four counties, six stately homes and an annual income that surpassed the earnings of the royal princes. It was highly unusual for a woman to inherit such vast sums because family estates usually passed along the male line. But Catherine stood her ground in this male-dominated environment, proving herself to be an astute businesswoman.

By 1811, Catherine was the nation’s foremost female celebrity. She caused a frenzy when she arrived in London in search of a husband and the

public jostled to see her. Offers of marriage poured in, and the excitement escalated when the future King William IV proposed.

But Catherine shocked the public by marrying for love. William Wellesley Pole was the dashing libertine nephew of the Duke of Wellington, whose shameless womanising earned him the nickname Mr Long Pole.

The couple’s lavish society wedding featured like a spread in Hello magazine. Catherine was a fashion icon and her gown was so admired that she started a trend for white weddings, which has endured to this day.

Catherine and William became the first-ever celebrity couple.

They married at an optimum time, when inventions such as the steam-powered press enabled the growth of the tabloid press and celebrity culture. The public could not get enough of them. They did not disappoint, hosting glittering parties and transforming Wanstead House into a celebrity hotspot.

Married life proved difficult for Catherine because the law gave husbands absolute control.

She was now part of William’s goods and chattels – he owned every part of her – even her body. If she disobeyed him, he could beat her or even incarcerate her. Before long, William became embroiled in a series of scandals, squandering her fortune, drinking and womanising. But the final part of my book reveals how she eventually took back control in spectacular style.

naresbrook in the middle of the 18th century was a desirable place to live for London merchants and craftsmen. Centred on The Eagle (originally the Spread Eagle) and with easy access to the city by means of two turnpiked roads, the Woodford Road from 1724 and Snaresbrook Road from 1757, it was a place of clean air and good water supply.

Birch Well can still be seen on the edge of the forest, and at least one house in Snaresbrook still has its own well to this day.

Snaresbrook is unusual in that its boundaries are not clearly defined; it is formally in Wanstead Parish, but Forest School is in Snaresbrook although in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, and the postcode of many properties is E18, South Woodford.

Buildings lost include Snaresbrook Hall, replaced by flats in the 1930s…

Jeremiah, a well-known art collector, later inherited Highams, which is now Woodford County High School (and 250 years old this year). He gave his name, although slightly altered, to Hermon Hill. A later occupant was Sir James William Morrison, Deputy Master of the Mint. His widow, Lady Morrison, was a great benefactor to Wanstead, leaving money to the Weavers’ Almshouses and donating the bells and a clock to Christ Church. She also paid for the building of the chapel at the Seamen’s Orphanage (which is now a synagogue). She died in 1871. Later occupants such as the Good family were also supporters of the Royal Infant Orphanage

(now Snaresbrook Crown Court) and the Duchess of Kent attended a fete at the Hermitage in aid of the Orphanage in 1938.

Other buildings of note which remain include White Lodge on the corner of Snaresbrook and Woodford Roads, onetime home of Sir Christopher Musgrave, chairman of the Metropolitan Water Board, and what is now James Hilton House on Woodford Road, where the author of Lost Horizon lived in the 1930s and which was originally two houses, Bellgrove and Ingoldsby.

Buildings we have lost include Snaresbrook Hall, replaced by flats in the 1930s, Copsfield, the

White Lodge, Snaresbrook Road

home of the Scrutton family, and Gowan Lea, a school for many years. The grand houses of The Drive were begun in the late 1890s, replacing another large mansion known as Wanstead Hall or Hunters Hall.

Hollybush Hill still has Kingsley Grange, a fine Victorian mansion originally called Mornington Lodge. Two houses in that road were once Barnardo children’s homes, Staffa and Iona.

Photographic 1893-2018

S

ince the War, Woodford Photographic Society had been affiliated to the Central Association of Photographic Societies, but had never taken part in any of the activities. In 1965, the borough of Wanstead and Woodford was amalgamated with Ilford and parts of Chigwell and Dagenham to become the London Borough of Redbridge, part of a new ‘Greater London’. The society then came within the geographic area of the East Anglian Federation (EAF) of Photographic Societies and decided to resign from the Central Association and join the East Anglian Federation.

In the sixth of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary year, club member Alan Simpson offers some insight into the group’s history, which in turn provides a pictorial record of our changing surroundings of Great Britain. In 1968, the society was again successful with five monochrome prints and 56 colour slides accepted.

Four of the prints and two of the slides were then selected to represent the Federation at the national inter-federation contest. This placed Woodford once again amongst the front rank of the societies in the region.

In 1978, the annual subscription to the Woodford Photographic Society was £5…

Two of the main organisers of the EAF lived in Woodford: Fred James and Daisy James. As local residents, they were invited to become honorary members of the Woodford Photographic Society. Fred died a year afterwards, but Daisy became an active member.

Daisy James involved the society in the EAF annual exhibitions, and for several years, Woodford was among the leading clubs for successful entries in these exhibitions. In May 1967, Woodford had the highest number of prints and slides accepted. One of Reg Fowkes’ prints was subsequently included in the EAF’s entry for the interfederation competition held by the Photographic Alliance

The records show that the society was a thriving club in the 1970s and proud of its long tradition. The committee decided to set up a permanent collection to keep a record of the work of the club; for example, typical prints of members past and present and, where possible, the winning prints of the Newmarch Trophy. Reg Fowkes began to organise the collection of these works in 1970, and the collection would ultimately include photographs from the mid-1950s through to the mid1990s, with a few from earlier years.

The minutes of the society at this time are often silent on matters concerning the history of photography in general. It

is not certain when the first colour prints made from colour negative film were exhibited at competitions, but in 1975 the club bought an enlarger suitable for colour printing for the use of members at a cost of £40.

Colour slide work also became increasingly popular and, in 1979, the society decided to purchase a new projection screen and establish a new slide competition.

The society took the opportunity to join the Redbridge Arts Council in 1975. At that time, the annual subscription to the Arts Council was £1.50. In 1978, the annual subscription to the Woodford Photographic Society was £5.

With the continuing advances made in the photographic industry, photography became a hobby that everyone could enjoy and many people possessed cameras. The population of the area was also expanding, but despite this, in 1987, the club had fewer than 50 members, possibly because of the increasing attraction of television.

In 1977, the club arranged an evening entitled Son of Pollocks Peep Show by Sir George and Lady Pollock. This was held at the Sir James Hawkey Hall in November and other clubs in the area were invited. The show was a great success and made a profit of nearly £100.

In 1982, the club moved from the Ray Lodge church hall to the Hollis Room at South Woodford Library. The premises at Ray Lodge had given problems because of the need for ‘blacking out’ and the general lack of comfort. Membership had reduced to about 40 people.

recently went through a bad patch, when the experience of loss and intensive medicines combined with the daily pressures of life made me question my ability to cope.

I’d always managed fine in the past but suddenly found myself constantly fighting negative thoughts and had difficulty sleeping.

I turned to professional help. My situation was serious enough to warrant an antidepressant prescription, but for me this wasn’t the answer as more medicines would interfere with my health treatment. Looking for a way to lift me out of the black hole, I discovered a wealth of local resources in the South Woodford area for self-treating.

In a world with increased pressure, a long list of multitasking chores, the constant barrage of social media content and information thrown at us from every angle, we rarely create time for ourselves to reflect. But this could be the kindest gift we can offer ourselves. Take yourself, bring your family, invite your friends!

Just as yoga on Saturday mornings is replacing the hangover, could meditation clubs substitute less wholesome activities in the future?

I left feeling calm and at peace, and slept well for the first time in weeks…

Alternative therapies are growing in popularity and many of them are preventative, meaning you don’t need to be suicidal to start practising some feel-good activities. Here are my top local choices.

Mindfulness The brain is a powerful thing. Many of us suffer from overactive thoughts that create the sensation the mind

Local resident Emily Potter suggests a range of South Woodford-based treats for your mind, body and soul as a way to replenish and restore your inner self controls us. But we can retrain our mind and take back this power. Finding myself stuck in between feeling sad about the past and worried for the future, mindfulness encouraged calm and peace by bringing my focus to the present moment.

Concentrating on our physical and emotional sensations develops a sense of awareness that allows us to better manage those tough times. I studied mindfulness at the Forest Therapy Centre (75 Station Passage; 020 8502 4674), which ran a six-week course. Each Monday evening, the group was gently steered by Mangala from the Bethnal Green Buddhist Centre, who soon helped us lose our sheepish nervousness. We worked together on a full body scan that felt not far off an outerbody experience. I left feeling calm and at peace, and slept well for the first time in weeks, well worth the recommended £10 donation.

Meditation Group meditation is offered by the Epping Buddhist Centre at the Woodford Memorial Hall (209 High Road; 01992 571 354; £8 donation per class). Six-week courses run on Wednesday evenings, teaching the ‘habits of happy people’, or how to ‘stop worrying, start living’. Infused

with Buddha’s principles, the group is open and supportive – the underlying ethos is to be good to oneself and bring about true happiness by being good to others. We can’t change the behaviour of those around us in the world, but we can change our own. Highly recommended, particularly if you are looking for some grounding or perspective on life.

Yoga A great way to relax and connect with the mind and body has been through physical exercise.

Restorative yoga at 10.30am on Sunday mornings at AirYoga Studio (90 George Lane; 07949 575 468) with Barbara Keller is my favourite way to start the week. The focus is more meditative than movement, but I have grown very fond of these sessions where Barbara will even turn out the lights and tuck you up under a blanket!

Reflexology and reiki The Chinese practice of applying pressure to certain parts of the body has long been reputed to deal with stress and other health conditions. I visited Sylvia Coloma (Wanstead;

07767 790 616), who has a warm and welcoming treatment centre in her own home. Lying horizontally, lights turned low, with soothing music to focus on, she worked on my feet with expert deftness. Fortyfive minutes later, I could feel my tensions had surfaced and soothed. She also specialises in reiki, hovering her hands just above my body to harness my internal energy. I felt so tranquil she had to wake me up!

Talking therapies Having someone to share your thoughts and worries with can often be a huge relief, and the Samaritans in Leyton (663 Lea Bridge Road; 020 8520 9191) do just that in lending a sympathetic ear. Drop-ins are welcome every evening or phone calls are answered 24/7 in full confidentiality. No problem is too big or too small, and vocalising your challenges can help to break them down or provoke what your next steps may be.

Whatever you choose to do, be it a full course of meditation or making 20 minutes of quiet downtime, enjoy giving yourself the gift of some mindspace.
