Welcome… £1.09 per person per year. That was the widely reported cost of each of our 67 medals won by Team GB in Rio in August. While the ethical and economic debates about funding in sport will no doubt continue, something more clear-cut is the acknowledgement that financial input is just one of many ingredients in the recipe for success. We watched the live show and enjoyed the end results – what most of us didn’t see was the hard work, dedication and motivation that came before the final performances. This concept is not limited to the Olympics, of course, or indeed to sport. The behind-the-scenes work that results in a highly polished performance or a finely tuned product is something I’m sure many of us can relate to. And if ever there is a time in Woodford’s cultural calendar to turn our attention to those who have ‘put the work in’, then now is it. With the culmination of what must be thousands of man-hours among numerous organisers and participants, the wider public can now enjoy the final performances of the Woodford Festival. They may not be taking place in Rio, but residents and visitors will rejoice nonetheless in the multi-sensory delights of this celebration of community spirit and achievement. Our 67 medals may have come at a price and in the current climate of austerity the question of affordability is a valid one. But less easily measured is the benefit to society that such an outstanding national achievement brings. The opposite, however, may be true on a local scale. It’s probably hard to put a price on the funds used by the diverse range of participants involved in the festival, but the benefit to our Lee Marquis, Editor community is easy to calculate: priceless.

Woodford Memorial Hall: ‘best job I have ever had’

Property licensing consultation

At this year’s Woodford Memorial Hall annual lecture Deborah Aloba will be talking about her experiences as the hall’s Heritage Engagement Officer. The role – which Deborah describes as ‘the best job I have ever had’ – was part of a year-long audio-visual history project collating the hall’s 114 years of history to raise awareness of the venue and its role in the local area. The presentation will take place in The Roberts Hall from 7.45pm on 3 October (tickets: £7). Call 020 8505 3352

Redbridge Council have launched a consultation on two proposed property licensing schemes, which aim to license all properties rented to single family households in certain areas of the borough. One of the proposed schemes covers 14 wards, including Snaresbrook, Church End and Roding, and suggests a £500 fee per property for a five-year licence, with a number of conditions landlords will have to meet. The consultation will close on 16 October. Visit swvg.co/llords

The builders’ yard at 31 Marlborough Road, South Woodford is one of several local sites identified in the plan for residential development

and we must carefully manage where development takes place and the form it takes… We have said it time and again, doing nothing is not an option,” said Councillor Jas Athwal. Members of the South Woodford Society, however, are questioning why the local area is being targeted for ‘excessive growth’. Comments received during the consultation will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for independent examination and a Public Examination will take place next year. Visit swvg.co/localplan

Open House at Woodford County High School

Society raise questions over housing for homeless

Woodford County High School will be one of several venues in Redbridge taking part in Open House London 2016, an annual celebration of architecture and design when buildings open their doors to the public for free. Formerly Highams Manor – an elegant Georgian manor house built in 1768 – the building was initially converted into a military hospital during the First World War, with ground and first floor rooms used as operating theatres and wards. In 1919 the site was rented from the Warner family by Essex County Council for the purpose of establishing a new school for girls and renovation was needed to turn the wards used by soldiers into classrooms. Half-hourly tours of the venue – located on High Road, Woodford Green – will take place on 18 September from 1pm to 5pm. Visit swvg.co/ohl16

The South Woodford Society have outlined a series of questions they would like councillors to answer regarding proposals for the former dairy site near Charlie Brown’s roundabout to be developed into 151 temporary housing units for the homeless. “The businesses currently operating on the site have been given formal notice that their leases will not be renewed… Redbridge Council has decided not to consult local residents and we would only have discovered their proposal when they applied for planning approval,” said a spokesperson for the community group, who goes on to ask: “Why does Redbridge continue to damage viable businesses in South Woodford? What is the definition of temporary housing and what is the scale of housing being proposed?”

Residents have until the end of September to put forward their views on the Redbridge Local Plan, which sets out the council’s proposals for 16,845 new homes in the borough and identifies South Woodford as one of five ‘investment and growth areas’. Redbridge’s population is estimated to rise by 65,000 over the next 15 years and the council have been trying to identify ways to provide the facilities needed to cope with this increase. “The borough is in desperate need of new housing

Wanstead and Woodford Association for the Blind

Gateway to India: Gujarat, Mumbai and Woodford

The Wanstead and Woodford Association for the Blind held their annual summer party in August. “It was a chance for members to have a fun afternoon, but it was also a chance for the club to say thank you to all the volunteers who keep it going,” said Susan Mann, the group’s secretary, who is keen to welcome new members to their weekly meetings at the Woodford Green United Free Church. Volunteers – to drive members to events – are also needed. Call 07840 850 838

A touring exhibition that explores the links between India, Britain and Redbridge will be on show at Redbridge Museum from 18 October to 28 January. The borough’s links to India stretch back to 1615, when Sir Thomas Roe of Woodford secured a base for London’s East India Company on the coast of Gujarat, India’s westernmost state. East India Company merchants subsequently used their wealth to build magnificent estates in Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford. Visit swvg.co/india

Former BBC director offers documentary service

More Green Flags flying in parks across Redbridge

An award-winning former BBC and ITV producer and director has established a unique business model that is offering local residents the chance to have their family story committed to film in a documentary. “My documentary portrait video service could feature a relative or friend who has a unique or appealing story to tell and illustrate it with still photos, archive video, music and titles,” said Azeem Khan, who has been making documentaries and factual programmes on a freelance basis since the 1990s. “I came up with the idea after discussing it with my elderly parents and asking them if they would like to have their stories recorded professionally as a testament.” The cost of the service will depend on the duration of filming and editing. Following the recent publication of this year’s Green Flag Award winners, there are now a total of nine parks and open spaces in Redbridge that have the right to fly the iconic flag. Elmhurst Gardens, Goodmayes Park, Ilford War Memorial, South Park, Valentines Park and Hainault Forest Country Park have each retained their Green Flag status, with Claybury Woods, Clayhall Park and Seven Kings Park also achieving the high standards required. “I would like to pay tribute to the fantastic ‘friends of’ parks groups that take so much interest and give so much time to our parks in order to make them better. Their work is a tremendous example of civic pride,” said Councillor Ross Hatfull. To vote for South Woodford’s Elmhurst Gardens in the People’s Choice Awards, visit swvg.co/voteelmhurst

Academy invites pupils to sit scholarship exam

A production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest took place in the gardens of Woodford Green’s Hurst House in August. “The play suited the grounds perfectly,” commented one member of the sell-out audience. Director Helen Crosse of Shooting Stars Theatre Company used the whole of the gardens to bring the play to life, including the secluded rose garden that became Algernon’s London apartments, with the audience ‘acting’ as members of the party.

Thy English Academy – which runs English and maths lessons for seven- to 16-year-olds at Snaresbrook’s Forest School – are offering one student the chance to win a year’s free tuition. “The scholarship place will start in January 2017, allowing them to take part in lessons aimed at 11Plus and GCSE achievement,” said Nadia Mansoor, who founded the academy in 2014. The scholarship will be awarded to the child with the highest score in an exam to be sat at the end of September. Call 020 8530 8834

A reminiscence afternoon invites participants to bring childhood photos

Redbridge will be marking UK Older People’s Day with a week-long programme of events at the end of September. The celebrations – which recognise the contribution older people make to our society – coincide with the UN International Day of Older Persons on 1 October. Several entertainment shows will take place at Elderberries Day Centre in Woodford Green (call 020 8708 7641) with a range of other events – including a quiz and celebratory lunch with local councillors – taking place at the Age UK activity centre in Wanstead (call 020 8989 6338). In South Woodford, a reminiscence session at the library on 28 September from 11.30am to 2pm invites participants to share their childhood memories and look at old photos and memorabilia (call 020 8708 9067).

A team of artists are inviting local residents to discover the art of drawing at an event at St Mary’s Church in October. The Big Draw 2016 is a drawing workshop for all ages, which hopes to encourage people to draw and experiment with mark-making using a range of different graphic media. “It is generally very popular with families and is intended to be fun,” said organiser Mark Lewis. Demonstrations will take place throughout the day and all materials will be supplied. “We try to keep up with the digital age and so I will also be giving demonstrations of drawing on an iPad and iPhone,” added Mark, who is a former lecturer of art and design at London Metropolitan University. The workshop will take place on 15 October from 10am to 4pm. Email mlewis342@gmail.com

The Woodford and District National Trust centre will be launching a new series of talks in September, covering a diverse range of subjects. The centre, which has raised over £250,000 for the National Trust since it was formed in 1968, also arranges outings to various National Trust properties. The new season of monthly presentations begins at 8pm on 14 September at Trinity Catholic High School with a talk by Rachel Kolsky about the places and people associated with Benjamin Disraeli. Future subjects will include City of London churches (October), extinction (November), Rainham Hall (December), River Thames art (January), Wanstead House (February) and The Vyne (March). But now, more than ever, we need to come together to maintain a sustainable neighbourhood and guard against the potentially huge negative impact on all our lives and community from the proposed plans for development that Redbridge Council have outlined for South Woodford in the recently published Redbridge Local Plan 2015–2030: PreSubmission Draft. The plan has targeted a number of areas in the borough, but in particular, South Woodford has been earmarked and designated as an ‘investment and growth area’. There are a number of key suggestions in the plan. These include a proposal to dispose of multiple current business areas (Station Estate, 120 Chigwell Road, Raven Road Industrial Estate, 31 Marlborough Road, 43–45 George Lane and Works at Maybank Road and Chigwell Road and Tesco on Southend Road) in favour of high-density residential and commercial development. There are plans to build 650 new homes in South Woodford, but with no indication given in the proposals for any accompanying infrastructure enhancements. Labelling South Woodford as an ‘investment and growth area’ comes at a terrifying cost in terms of planning. It means that we will become part of the tall building policy: Redbridge will be able to build tower blocks in South Woodford wherever possible. The plan also refers to a proposed ‘landmark building’ in the area. What does this mean? The key question that arises from the Redbridge Local Plan is why it is so unbalanced and why is South Woodford being targeted for excessive growth? Rather than demolish business areas and build new housing, greater

s a community in South Woodford, we all have one thing in common – we share the spaces, shops, amenities and schools in the area. And yet, our community is so much more than this. We also share our lives and build relationships with our neighbours, local businesses and those around us. I, like many, have a deep sense of pride and gratitude that we live in such a wonderful area.

Following the publication of the Redbridge Local Plan, which sets out the council’s proposals for future developments, Rena Pathak of the South Woodford Society questions the ‘excessive growth’ planned for the local area

consideration needs to be given to supporting development that is sympathetic to the suburban and Victorian nature of our neighbourhood. The burden of development should also be shared and proportional with the surrounding areas of Wanstead, Snaresbrook, Woodford and Aldersbrook. The plan describes

We can fight the dark clouds looming … them as ‘attractive and historic neighbourhoods’ – is that why they aren’t being considered for development? Is there not a deeply unpleasant social engineering subtext here? The leafy parts are left untouched while South Woodford, along with four other ‘investment and growth areas’ (Ilford, the Crossrail corridor, Gants Hill and Barkingside) will accommodate much of the borough’s (ambitious) growth over the life of the plan. Anyone who has been on the Central Line in rush-hour will know how deeply unpleasant that journey can be. The footfall at South Woodford is excessive compared to other parts of the borough and even other nearby stations (South Woodford had a footfall of a stunning 5.15 million in 2015 compared to just 2.67 million at Snaresbrook) and the proposal of yet more homes will only exacerbate this already overburdened station.

Our key objection with the Redbridge Local Plan is that it prioritises housing over local businesses, the loss of which will be devastating for the sustainability of our community. Further, the housing targets do not come with any additional proposals for improvements or infrastructure. It is imperative that the designation of South Woodford as an ‘investment and growth area’ be removed from the plan. South Woodford also has a very poor provision of leisure and sports facilities and the only site earmarked as a potential development for community and leisure is the car park adjacent to 24 Primrose Road under the viaduct. Everything else is reserved primarily for housing. Although we should support development for our neighbourhood, any development should happen through partnership with the community, be sustainable and respect and maintain the character and charm of the area. The only way we can make the council listen is if we strongly

let our thoughts, opinions and suggestions be heard. We need a three-stage response: 1. Complete the council’s feedback form on the Redbridge Local Plan by 30 September. 2. Join the South Woodford Society (strength in numbers). 3. Help us create our own Neighbourhood Plan for South Woodford. A Neighbourhood Plan will provide local residents with a voice that is channelled through a formal body, and as such, Redbridge Council will have to engage and work alongside the Neighbourhood Plan with any proposals for South Woodford. We also desperately need volunteers with certain skill sets who can offer their services. Are you experienced in planning, website development or social media? Can you spare time for leafleting? There is hope. We can fight the dark clouds looming for our area but we need to come together, unite and let our voices be heard in an effective way.

Fresh pair of eyes Cate – who wishes to be known only by her first name – is one of three friends who recently relocated to South Woodford. So, how do the area’s newest residents perceive our high street offerings?

400+ courses for adults and families

M

y family and close set of friends have all moved to South Woodford in the last two years from central London boroughs. We love the greenery and environment of this area and we love the great range of local restaurants. But we think the high street has the opportunity to improve, reflecting the changes made on our previous local high streets with more independent businesses and places to hang out.

South Woodford currently has a lot of mainstream chains and it is really practical from Monday to Friday, as you can do everything here from buying food to having a haircut or going to exercise classes. But at the weekend we find ourselves going to other areas to eat, drink and shop. We think there are some essential ingredients for the high street to satisfy the increasing numbers of 30-something cosmopolitan Londoners like us who are moving to South Woodford. In particular, we would love to have on our doorstep:

I moved to South Woodford from the East End in 2014 with my husband, who like me is a civil servant. We have a young son and another baby on the way. Emily, who I met travelling and works in sales, moved here from south-east London in February with her boyfriend and both of them previously lived in Paris for a few years. Kirsty, who I met at a music festival and works in human resources, moved here from the East End with her husband in March.

zz more independent coffee shops (like the recently opened Dada Cafe on the High Road), preferably with a deli counter, a book shelf and weekly social events.

We often go to other areas at the weekend…

zz more independent shops selling fashion, unique gifts and home furnishings.

Kirsty and I both lived near the Roman Road in Bow at a time when it was transformed from a fairly rundown road (which locals thought was long past its glory days) into a modern, appealing and vibrant area – thanks in part to an appearance by Mary Portas, Queen of the High Street, on Channel 4 in 2012.

We think it would be lovely if our high street could change to reflect the area’s new demographic, whilst retaining its existing charm and features for the people who already come here. So, this is a plea to any business owners who are looking to invest in a new area and open a coffee shop, gastro pub or independent shop – South Woodford needs you!

zz a great gastro pub where we can have long lunches with our friends and little ones and nights out with live music – not just a pub full of guys watching the football.

Is there an aspect of the local area you would like to comment on? Whether you are new to the area or have lived here your whole life, article contributions are welcome. Visit swvg.co.uk

A reader of the South Woodford Village Gazette emailed me with the following plea to local dog owners and I am happy to pass on the message.

Safe for all ages

I walk my dog every day and am concerned about the increased dog fouling on public footpaths and parks, sometimes only a metre away from a receptacle provided by the council. It is the duty of all responsible dog owners to take bags with them when walking their dog and, if no bin is available, to take the full bag home.

Exercise reduces general stress and muscle tension while physically tiring you. The brain’s response to the fatigue is to increase your deep sleep patterns. Most people need seven to nine hours of sleep per night.

2. Our bodies work best with a regular cycle of work (exercise), rest (sleep) and recovery (good nutrition and hydration). 3. Exercise encourages the body to release the ‘feelgood’ chemicals: endorphin, serotonin and dopamine. It’s easier to stay focused and motivated if you exercise with friends or in a group.

5. Eat healthy. Ensure you eat a balanced diet with foods rich in Omega-3, Vitamin B12 and selenium, such as salmon, eggs, milk, yoghurt, kale, spinach and pumpkin seeds. They will help you feel happier and healthier.

W

oodford’s got talent! In fact, talent is to be found in every part of the UK – and in every individual – for each of us has distinct abilities that define our characters. Most of us have a party piece of some description that we can bring out to amuse our families and friends. However, it is clear that there is an abundance of talent in all age groups residing within the former Area Two boundaries (the Church End, Monkhams, Roding and Bridge wards). It includes photographers, filmmakers, yoga experts, storytellers, gardeners, flower arrangers, chefs and brewers, as well as the more obvious musicians, singers, dancers, jugglers, magicians, painters, sculptors, writers, poets, comedians and thespians. Many of these talents will be assembled under the umbrella of the seventh Woodford Festival, which will be taking place between 1 and 9 October.

Performers, artists and those with talents of all descriptions are ready to entertain you this October at the seventh annual Woodford Festival. Vice-chair of the biennial community event Geoff Seeff invites you to watch, laugh, dance, discuss, sing along… and have fun

occasion and Major Paul Holifield of the Salvation Army was persuaded to assume the role of coordinator. Unfortunately, Paul has recently undergone surgery for a heart condition and his role and responsibilities have now been re-allocated to other members of the festival

The emphasis of the Woodford Festival is on fun – for performers and spectators alike… The festival was the brainchild of Anny and Ron WortleyMillek, who had acted as the coordinators for the Leytonstone Festival before turning their attention to the locality in which they lived. There has always been a small festival committee to help manage what is a demanding and time-consuming exercise, but Anny and Ron were the mainstay of the previous five festivals, rounding up those who wanted to participate, booking venues, cajoling funds, compiling the programme and distributing the marketing literature. They are taking a back seat on this

committee, comprising former Church End councillor and Redbridge mayor Richard Hoskins as the Chair, myself as Vice-Chair and Treasurer along with Amanda Whittle, Peter Spencer, Al Neville and Qaiser Malik. The Woodford Festival is a community event, which means it is open to all those who want to participate. There are no auditions or pre-selection of works and no direction as to where, when or how an event is to be presented. That is entirely up to the artists involved. With

no set minimum standard of performance or exhibit, we could have a situation where events are, shall we say, disappointing. However, in all the years we have run the festival, contributors have invariably demonstrated the highest levels of skill and creativity and this has been much appreciated by those attending. I am sure this year will be no exception. Chair Richard Hoskins says the emphasis of the festival is on fun – for performers and spectators alike. “Many of the events encourage audience participation, for example, the current programme includes a Sound of Music singalong, a barn dance and an international evening social event, but even where people are viewing artworks or listening to a talk or to music, they should take the opportunity to engage with the

presenters, comment and ask questions.” Some of the 100-plus events taking place are listed in this edition of the South Woodford Village Gazette (see pages 36–37), and posters and leaflets will also be placed in local shops and libraries, with full details available on the festival website. We look forward to reporting on the highlights of the Woodford Festival in the next issue, but in the meantime, I’m sure you will all join me in wishing Paul Holifield a speedy recovery – we hope that he will be able to resume his role as coordinator as soon as possible.

The Woodford Festival will run from 1 to 9 October. For more information, visit woodfordfestival.org.uk. To find out how to get involved, email geoffseeff@cix.co.uk or call 07894 237 158

Family home Since opening its doors in 1976, South Woodford’s Oxfam shop has welcomed many volunteers. Manager John Russell certainly appreciates his ‘Oxfamily’ and always welcomes new members

A

s the manager of the South Woodford Oxfam shop, my job is to recruit volunteers to help run the shop and make money for the charity. I am charged with making as much money as possible to enable Oxfam to work around the globe in all sorts of areas, from women’s rights to water, earthquakes to education. Originally founded in Oxford in 1942 as the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, Oxfam’s work is life-changing and groundbreaking, whilst also trying to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive.

However, not everyone stays for the long term, so the shop is always looking for new members to join our friendly team. Volunteering at an Oxfam shop is an opportunity to learn many skills. At South Woodford, the donations range from designer and vintage clothes, handbags and shoes to antique books and collectables. All this has to be sorted, cleaned, priced and then presented appropriately. But it’s not simply a case of sticking any old price tag on the items. The internet is always a good guide to current prices, especially where designer or vintage clothing and collectables are concerned.

Some volunteers do a bit of everything…

Volunteers can sort, steam, price and then merchandise clothes or deal with customers in the shop, assisting with queries, working on the till and reconciling the money. Or maybe sorting out the donated books and seeing if any are of significant value, looking them up on the internet, pricing accordingly and displaying to the best effect in the shop. The same goes for the homewares. Some volunteers do a bit of everything, some only one thing, such as taking payments. It doesn’t matter at Oxfam, as long as it helps to run the shop as efficiently as possible.

Having managed the South Woodford shop for eight years and having been a volunteer previously for three years, I am constantly amazed by the amount of hard-working and dedicated volunteers who have passed through our doors over the years. Many, like Josie, have been in the shop for over 40 years, several others for more than 20 years. There are volunteers who originally came as Duke of Edinburgh applicants and youngsters with time to spare, who have since graduated university and are now in full-time employment, but still volunteer on their days off or during their spare time.

I am always happy to hear from people wishing to volunteer and becoming one of our ‘Oxfamily’, so do get in touch if the idea of this appeals to you.

The South Woodford Oxfam shop is located at 151 High Road, South Woodford, E18 2PA. For more information and to find out about volunteering, call 020 8505 7771 or visit swvg.co/oxfam

[Secret_of_my_Success] Ruth Adams discovers the successful philosophy of Kindred Tattoo Studio and Art Gallery

Stoneage ARCHITECTURAL ANTIQUES AND RECLAMATION CENTRE

B

rothers Mick and Chris Howells, with Mick’s wife Karen, co-own Kindred Tattoo, a custom tattoo studio and art gallery. “Customers,” explains Mick, a graphic and urban artist in charge of the art gallery side of the business, “become like family to us (Kindred means family) – whether they’ve had a tattoo with my brother or tattooist Hayden Horwood or commissioned or purchased a piece of art. We are a team and we’ve succeeded, I think, in creating an extremely welcoming studio here. To that end, our set-up is open, contrasting with an old-school type, seedy tattoo parlour. A tattoo is a really big decision but here, there’s no pressure whatsoever. We are successful because customers value our modern, safe, bespoke approach. Everything starts

with the artwork and our work is making unique tattoos. We fully explain aftercare and customers leave with printed instructions. When you’ve just had a tattoo, it might be difficult to remember. We are, of course, licensed by Redbridge Council.” From his base in South Woodford, Mick also manages artists and gives artists from all over the world a platform to show their work. Kindred have worked with music companies Sony and Warner on large murals for music artists and a number of Premier League footballers have had tattoos there.

Kindred Tattoo Studio and Art Gallery is located at 155 High Road, South Woodford. For more information, call 020 8506 0826

Mindfulness Like a cross-party group of MPs, local yoga instructor Astra Farquharson is keen to encourage us to be a more mindful nation. Here she explains why and offers some insight into mindfulness-based training

W

e’ve all found ourselves overcome by everyday trials at times and may often ignore well-meaning phrases such as ‘take it easy’, ‘breathe’ and ‘keep focused’. All of these reflect mindfulness-based practice.

Mundane may never be the same again! Defined as ‘mind-body based training’, mindfulness encourages us to observe physical sensations, thoughts and emotions, which may go unnoticed in the autopilot of our daily lives. This provides an opportunity for the mind to become stiller and more focused. There is growing evidence that mindfulness helps to reduce stress, prevent depression and

improve wellbeing. Mindfulness and its benefits have recently gained the attention of a cross-party group of MPs who participated in mindfulness courses. “Although initially sceptical… having completed the course… I am a convert. It’s just logical that we could all do with simple techniques to help us remember to live in and appreciate the present moment,” said one parliamentarian. The Mindfulness All-Party Parliamentary Group have since published Mindful Nation UK, a report recommending the introduction of mindfulness within healthcare, education and other sectors. So what does mindfulnessbased training involve? You can expect a mixture of yogainspired mindful movement, Buddhist-inspired meditation techniques and insights from

cognitive therapy. To become more mindful, we need to give ourselves the time to genuinely rest the mind with a formal meditation practice. We can also approach day-to-day routines with a sense of mindful awareness. Maybe next time you are doing an everyday task, consider passing the time by simply observing when the mind wanders to the past or future, and then bring your attention

back to your activity with a renewed sense of curiosity and exploration – mundane may never be the same again! In a fast-moving and changing world, mindfulness and meditation, which both embrace the activity of ‘non-doing’ and ‘non-striving’, seem increasingly more relevant and they offer us a compassionate means to reconnect with ourselves.

Astra is a British Wheel of Yoga (BWY Dip) teacher and a member of The Register of Exercise Professionals. She has also trained in integrating mindfulness into yoga practice. For more information, email astra@therapyyoga.co.uk

DD’s Woodford Diary Some South Woodford scribbles from DD, our resident diarist, commentator and observer of all things local

My friend Marjorie is having a new bathroom installed. We had coffee together this morning, after which she had an appointment to sit on her new toilet with the builder in attendance, so she could instruct him as to exactly the right placement for the looroll holder. After that, she had arranged to take a seat in the bath (fully clothed, of course) to assess where to fix the handrail. I admired her rigorous pursuit of perfection. By the way, what happened to our public toilets in the car park behind the post office? There’s an interactive map on the Redbridge website pinpointing the locations on offer for ladies and gents in our borough. Barkingside, Seven Kings and Ilford are catered for. But our facilities are tantalisingly boarded up (though there is still a notice confirming that the premises are ‘under constant video surveillance’). I was unaware of this closure till fairly recently when my twoyear-old granddaughter – who

Request: “Please, can you help?” Answer: “I’m afraid our insurance wouldn’t cover it if there were to be an accident.” (I thought that was what we were trying to avoid!) Where could we seek relief? We hurried across the road (observing the Green Cross Code, of course) and into The Wood Oven. Smiles of welcome. Immediate recognition of the problem. A way cleared for us to rush through to the Ladies. Grandson (aged five) meanwhile, left to chat about football with the waiters while enjoying a lollypop produced from behind the counter. “Can we have another lollipop for my sister?” he was enquiring as we emerged. No wonder I’m a regular customer. Memorial Hall memories T

he Memorial Hall’s heritage project has now come to an end and it is with great sadness that I am writing this last article. The preparations for the endof-project celebrations were a frenzy of activity. Barry, Bob, Kay and Anthea all worked hard to create a fabulous Edwardian cut-out seaside scene. Anita, coached the Church’s children’s choir. Tamsen blew up balloons and John and Clare helped me set up the stands and exhibition, while Melanie from Churchfields School coached members of the school choir to perform at the opening concert. I ran around like a thing possessed as I picked up Edwardian costumes, sorted out pressed flowers, sourced Edwardian-style toys, booked the unicyclist and the Punch and Judy man, and collected coconuts from Spitalfields at one in the morning. All this because I was determined to recreate a fete that Sir John Roberts held at Salway House in 1905 to raise money for the hall. Sadly, I couldn’t find anyone to supply a donkey for donkey rides!

© Redbridge Information and Heritage

The day dawned and having set up the majority of things outside (you should have seen me moving a 10 foot by six foot wire partition at 7am) you can imagine my relief and gratitude when Martyn and Harry arrived bang on time and calmly began putting tables and chairs outside and moving pianos.

Your Old Kit-Bag, reflecting music that would have been played at the hall in the early 1900s in remembrance of John Heath, the assistant secretary at the hall, who signed up in 1916 to fight in World War One. The children were drilled on getting on and off stage and bowing. My singing students Jackie and Valerie had a whole 10 minutes rehearsal and then the concert began.

Suddenly, the hall was full with children and parents. Wendy Thomas, the head of Churchfields, and two other parents had turned up early and were in the kitchen buttering and

Ian from the church choir opened proceedings by singing the old 100th Hymn, the first piece of music that was performed at the hall in 1902, followed by Anita and the children looking

It has been the best job ever and I have loved every moment of it… jamming scones. Delicious cakes had been donated by members of the community. Rector Ian Tarrant was a stalwart when the projector and CD player decided to go on strike just before the concert rehearsal. In his normal quiet, kind, no-nonsense fashion, he sorted it all out and then became the sound engineer for the morning! I rehearsed the children, who were singing, among other songs, Pack Up Your Troubles in

amazing in their Edwardian costumes as they sang that topof-the-pops number from 1902, Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. Valerie sang two pieces that were performed at the hall in 1904 and 1923 and Jackie sounded great singing a 1930s jazz piece. Tilly’s 1950s dance was a sensation. I had hoped to screen a video of The Who as they played at the hall in the 1960s. However, instead – and totally unrehearsed

– I informed the children of Churchfields that we would give a demonstration of headbanging and shadow guitar playing to reflect the period of the hall’s history when bands played here regularly. As you can imagine, the audience collapsed with laughter. My favourite moment was at the end of the concert when the audience joined in singing: “We’re community, I have all my neighbours with me,” sung to the tune of Sister Sledge’s We are Family. Then it was croquet on the lawn with the wonderful Louie, Audrey and Vanessa serving tea and cakes, the Woodford Wheezards playing in the background, Jane organising children while they played Edwardian games, Diane assisting children to press flowers, Sally and Kerry demonstrating Edwardian makeup, Georgina standing on guard over the historical documents and children and adults watching the Punch and Judy show. Then it was all over and when I turned round, Megan had half the exhibits down prior to the magic show being set up.

The pièce de résistance was Sally, the great-great-great-great-niece of John Roberts, contacting me three weeks ago and visiting the hall. Unfortunately, she contacted me too late to include all the extra information she has given me in the book, which has now been published, but it has all gone on the website. It has been the best job ever and I have loved every moment of it and want to thank everyone who has participated in the project.

Copies of the Woodford Memorial Hall heritage project book are available from the hall, priced £4.50. For more information, visit woodfordmemorialhallheritageproject.co.uk

Miracles in E18 Keith White, director of Mill Grove, offers some insight into the cerebral palsy treatments provided by the Rose Walton Centre, one of several facilities housed in this unique residential community

LONDON

Ltd

M

ill Grove is the name of the home of a unique, extended family and residential community that began as an informal foster family in 1899. In this homely setting and atmosphere, Christians share their lives with children and young people. About 1 in every 400 children born in the UK are diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a wideranging term that spans children with barely noticeable limitations of the movement of a limb to those struggling to move any limbs. The good news for children and families in South Woodford is that since 1992 there has been a centre helping dozens of these children to reach unimagined potential. Children who were used to lying down and unable to sit up have been helped to walk unaided and even to ride horses and play football. The earlier the children are referred for help, the better their chances of progress, and there is a catalogue of stirring stories and testimonies. The Rose Walton Centre was the brainchild of Pauline Tingey and her family. One of her grandchildren, Anthony Lubbock, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and she and her relatives (including his mother and an aunt) organised a programme of education and skills for him in her home in Arlington Road, Woodford Green. When Anthony outgrew that setting, she approached us at Mill Grove

and for over 20 years, the centre has been located at the heart of this residential community in Crescent Road, E18. The team use a method pioneered in Budapest during the late 1940s by Professor Andras Peto. He called his system Conductive Education. Put crisply, it is all about a maxim: “Ask me not what I can do for children with cerebral palsy, but ask me what they can learn to do for themselves.” The core idea is to seek to stimulate and motivate the children and their senses without assuming there is a limit to their potential. This is done by working intensively with them and their families to focus on the practical skills and abilities that are most helpful in their lives and development. In addition to the steady development of 70 children over this time at the centre, there have been dramatic changes to some children’s lives and progress. The word ‘miracle’ has been used by parents to describe the moment when their child sat up or walked for the first time. Set in the context of Mill Grove – which also has a pre-school and offers lunch for senior citizens – the children and families also benefit from the fact that they are not separated or segregated from mainstream life and activities. There are shared sessions and activities with children in the pre-school, and some of the senior citizens treasure their encounters and conversations with children from the Rose Walton Centre.

The Rose Walton Centre is located at Mill Grove, 10 Crescent Road, South Woodford. For more information or to help support their work, call 020 8504 2702 or visit rosewaltoncentre.org.uk

New term begins 20th September 2016

Upbeat is a community choir open to anyone aged 16 or over. We sing everything from pop to classical, world to folk. In 2012 we sang at Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Watford Colosseum, performed for the Olympic Torch Procession at Valentines Mansion, and won a national competition for the best National Anthem to Cheddar! Don't worry if you think you can't sing, Upbeat is a warm and welcoming environment where you'll have a chance to learn the ropes. No audition is required, and you don't need to read music. We rehearse on Tuesdays, 8pm during term time at Wanstead House, 21 The Green.

Photography biography

M

y interest in photography began with the birth of my daughter in the early 1980s, when I decided I would buy an SLR camera. In those days it was pre-digital, of course, and my Pentax K1000 camera was completely manual focusing and exposure metering, accompanied by a couple of prime lenses (no zoom lenses). With that camera and use of film I probably obtained some of my best images to this day!

Society. The club allowed me to improve my picture-taking skills and also learn post-production techniques necessary to get better results. This combined two interests, photography and computing, into one hobby. There were expert speakers visiting the club and the members themselves were only too pleased to share their knowledge. This enabled me to progress and test newfound knowledge by taking part in regular club competitions.

However, when digital photography arrived, I moved away from the SLR and bought a small Canon compact camera and entered the new era of taking many pictures with no film cost. Although the quality of digital was not the same as my previous film images, things did improve when I moved to a digital SLR at about the same time I joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic

I was encouraged to take an active role in the club by joining the committee. I organised outings where members could photograph in different settings and learn skills from each other. These events were also very sociable occasions, with like-minded photographers generally being a friendly bunch. Subsequently, I was webmaster, organising the website before the challenging

role of programme secretary, ensuring the club’s events were varied and interesting. I am now the projectionist, which is more low-key but lets me use some of my computing skills. Over the years I tried different photography genres, but particularly enjoyed photographing wildlife and took a holiday to the Galapagos Islands. However, with the birth of my granddaughter, I have now gone back to baby portraits! Geoff Seeff is not only the vice-chair of the Woodford Festival, but also a founding member of the Woodford Wheezards, who ‘wheeze to please’. Here Geoff explains the origins of this local jazz band

e are an informal grouping of local (east London) professional and semi-professional musicians. We originally came together for the express purpose of playing at the first Woodford Festival in 2008, although over the years this has extended to other charity gigs. This is, of course, the usual way jazz groups operate – players have to learn the repertoire and improvise in whatever combination of instruments they find themselves in and with whomsoever has been invited to perform on that occasion.

by ensuring we play lyrical and harmonious tunes with vocals that offer poetry and meaning. One of my most enduring memories of the Woodford Festival was when a young woman in her twenties came over after listening to a few numbers and said she had never before heard this sort of music but thought it was ‘wonderful’, and now had every intention of finding out more about it. Sad that she, and presumably her parents, had so far missed out on this particular art form, but pleasing that she had made the discovery through the Wheezards.

Our informality can lead to some glorious cacophonies, especially in the final bars of a tune if everyone has different ideas as to how it should end! However, as an enthusiastic but essentially amateur musician, I consider myself fortunate and indeed privileged to have the opportunity to play the music I love with some seriously talented instrumentalists and singers who rarely, if ever, hit a wrong note and are a source of inspiration to me and our audiences.

Weather permitting (although there are contingency plans), we will be performing on the opening day of this year’s festival in George Lane, with a line-up including a full rhythm section and a superb singer (Kate Williams). We will be drawing on the popular works of, among others, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Richard Rogers. On 2 October I will take the Wheezettes (a smaller combination) to Belgique in South Woodford to offer a reminder of the Rio spirit – the Latin songbook of Antonio Carlos Jobim with the Keen brothers (Gabriel on keyboards and Alex on double bass) and vocalist Annie Dehaney-Stevens. On 8 October I will also be compering a musicathon at St Mary’s Church, a variety show where the Wheezards will be on hand to provide continuity and accompaniment.

In a previous festival, the renowned trumpeter and broadcaster Digby Fairweather became an honorary Wheezard for one of our gigs at the Horse and Well – and a wizard night to remember that was. I am only too well aware that jazz is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I try to make it accessible

The Woodford Wheezards will be performing on George Lane for the opening ceremony of the Woodford Festival on 1 October from 11am to 3pm. The Woodford Festival will run from 1 to 9 October. For more information, visit woodfordfestival.org.uk

Sing, sing a song Local singing teacher Deborah Aloba explains why no child should be told they can’t sing

I

became a singing teacher due to experiencing bad singing lessons as a young singer. This situation caused me to develop a lifelong interest in the singing voice. I was inspired to learn about how the voice works, how each muscle in the vocal tract is interconnected, the importance of breathing correctly, the necessity of the correct position of the soft palette, the jaw and the tongue and the techniques required to produce a voice that is free with a pure tone.

35

carried that initial assessment of their voice around with them all their lives. They have wanted to sing but been too embarrassed to even try, but as we work together their voices improve, often beyond their own expectations.

I always get a sense of excitement when I work with a student, regardless of whether they are a beginner or at an intermediate or advanced stage. It’s great seeing them achieve their initial goals, develop as singers and set new goals. I love working with people who have been told as children that they couldn’t sing and have

Two years ago, a new student approached me for lessons. At her first session, we explored what her voice could do and discovered that she only had an octave range. Her top note was D above Middle C. Two years later and her top note is an A-sharp and she is now gigging. She continues to work incredibly hard in her lessons and I am very proud of her.

Unhappy people in a happy world… The World Health Organisation has predicted that by 2020, depression will be at epidemic levels worldwide, closely followed by chronic anxiety and loneliness. That’s strange when you consider that many Western Nations today including the UK have never enjoyed so much wealth, health and leisure time, compared with the developing world. We have so much ‘choice’ and are almost unbelievably affluent. And yet we are not happy, at least not in proportion to what we have and own. According to one survey the UK has some of the worst road rage in the world, 64% of workers have experienced office rage, 71% of internet users suffer net rage and one in four families experience TV remote rage. ‘Shopaholicism’ is now a recognised addiction. The psychologist Oliver James has popularised the term ‘affluenza’ for infectious overconsumption. Symptoms include high debt, over work, the inability to delay gratification, obsessive behaviours and stress. It has never been so obvious that the cause of our unhappiness today is to do with the effects that modern living has on our minds. If we want to be happy - if we want to avoid road rage, running up massive credit card bills or succumbing to anxiety and depression - we need to pay more attention to our minds. Everything we experience, we experience through the mind our relationships with other people, our perceptions of the world, our work life, love life and home life. It is our states of mind that make life interesting or boring, enjoyable or depressing, meaningful of futile. Understanding and cultivating our minds is therefore - the key to happiness.

CHURCH END ESTATE

Philip Mount, Senior Manager at Churchill estates, is proud to confirm the opening of our new George Lane branch, which he feels really excited by, after opening the original Churchill estates on George Lane back in January 1999.

I must admit, it does feel a little strange to view George Lane from literally the other side of the street, but I feel it has given us all a new lease of life after 18 years in the old branch and an opportunity we really had to take as the new quadruple-fronted corner office gives the whole company a lift and an excellent opportunity to showcase a lot more of our properties and dedicate one entire window to our very buoyant lettings department.

Please feel free to drop in and take a look at the new premises and to meet Philip and his team: 0208 530 3333 Andy Binnington (Assistant Manager) Tracy Leachman (Sales Progressor) David epson (Senior Negotiator) Juan Bailey (Lettings Manager)
