The perfect mix of shops is what’s needed: the serious ones (banks and estate agents), the functional ones (butchers and bakers), the creative ones (florists and jewellers) and the relaxing ones (coffee shops and pubs). But how many of each?

In the media world, finding a recipe for perfection has been the holy grail for many writers and creators. From sitcoms to adverts and news headlines, applying a proven formula can ensure you create an Only Fools and Horses and not a Big Top, produce a Diet Coke break and leave Barry Scott on the cutting room floor, or write a catchy “I’ve been Edam fool” (The Sun, 10 January 2012; referring to Antony Worrall Thompson’s cheese theft) and avoid an “Enemies of the people” (Daily Mail, 4 November 2016; referring to the judges who ruled the government required parliamentary consent to give notice of Brexit).

Sitcom formulas are well documented. Take the right character, a catchphrase and a catastrophe or two to overcome and you have a recipe for hilarity. If only high street formulas were as easy to calculate. It may be hard to replicate Del Boy and Rodney, but it’s harder still to script the future of South Woodford’s numerous businesses and their individual plans within the community. So without a script, our high street must ad-lib its way to good fortune, and as the supporting cast we all need to give our best performance. Then, perhaps this time next year, we’ll be millionaires.

Sainsbury’s have sparked rumours of the potential redevelopment of a 4.2-acre site in South Woodford after listing the land – which is home to the supermarket as well as the Odeon cinema, Boots and several other shops – for sale.

Sainsbury’s, who own the site as part of a joint venture with British Land, has confirmed the sale will have no impact on their own store and will merely be a change of landlord. But fears remain over the future of the rest of the site, which is listed with

Savills estate agents for £32.1m.

“The land is being marketed as a development opportunity, which suggests the closure and demolition of the cinema is a real threat. Leisure opportunities are few and far between in this part of the borough, and the loss of the cinema would be a real blow to locals,” said Councillor Paul Canal, who is considering listing the cinema as an Asset of Community Value and invites support from residents for a campaign to that effect. Jewish film festival in South Woodford

Bereavement support from the Townswomen’s Guild

A ‘heartwarming and colourful’ film that sensitively explores what motivated thousands of Jewish survivors to stay in Germany after World War II will be shown at the Odeon in South Woodford on 21 November as part of the UK International Jewish Film Festival. First released in April, Bye Bye Germany is one of three films being shown locally for the festival, which will present 115 screenings between 9 and 26 November at 18 cinemas across the UK. A local counsellor will be offering advice on bereavement at a Bressey Townswomen’s Guild meeting on 21 November (7.30pm; visitors: £3). Elinor Taylor, who lives in Woodford, will explore how bereavement is handled in modern-day England and how it has changed since Victorian times. The discussion – which will take place at St Mary’s Church in South Woodford – will also look at how the Townswomen’s Guild itself can support those grieving.

Redbridge’s bid to become the London Borough of Culture was launched at Redbridge Drama Centre in South Woodford in October. The award – which is organised by the Mayor of London – has a prize fund of £1m to stage a programme of worldclass events. “This is a huge opportunity for Redbridge. It’s a chance to shine a spotlight on the borough. A chance to tell our stories and celebrate our special places. A chance to show that the sum of our diverse communities is so much greater than its parts,” said Councillor Jas Athwal, the leader of Redbridge Council.

Residents are invited to upload photos of local people and places, which will be collated into a giant photomosaic to promote the borough’s entry. The bid will be submitted on 1 December, with the winner announced in February. Visit swvg.co/culture

Help pay for play at Haven House this Christmas

Grace with Maxwell and Kelly

A mother with a five-year-old daughter with leukaemia and Down’s syndrome is raising awareness of her story as part of this year’s Christmas appeal for Haven House Children’s Hospice.

Grace Sherwood, who has a twin brother Maxwell, was diagnosed with leukaemia last November.

“The first time I met Katie, a nurse from the hospice, I immediately felt relaxed. She talked me through all the ways they could support us, and Grace now goes regularly to Haven House… In just a year, Haven House and Katie have become a vital part of our family,” said Grace’s mum, Kelly. A donation £141 could pay for three hours of play activities at the Woodford Green hospice, allowing a life-threatened child like Grace to have fun in a safe, supported environment.

Local resident publishes parenting book

A South Woodford psychotherapist who is ‘passionate about her work with parents and children’ has published her first book, Your Happy Child, which offers ‘10 proven steps to raising a happy child’ for those with children aged five to 11 years. “I help parents to use 21st-century techniques, utilising evidencedbased research on positive psychology, neuroscience and child development to cultivate a positive mindset to unleash their child’s talents and make them happier,” said Usha Chudasama.

Born in Kenya, Usha came to London in the 1970s and has 12 years of experience as a teacher and six years as a behaviour consultant. A book launch will take place at Wanstead Golf Club on 16 November from 6.30pm (tickets: £20, including a copy of the book). Visit swvg.co/usha

Final decision pending for South Woodford Post Office

Feedback from a public consultation over the future of South Woodford’s Post Office is being considered. At the time of writing a final decision is yet to be taken, but the proposal put forward is for the branch to move from its current site at 139 George Lane to 115 George Lane (currently Business Boss). “It would be operated on a franchise basis from a dedicated area and hours would be extended to include Saturday afternoons,” said a Post Office spokesperson.

“The reason for the proposed change is to keep the branch and the same services in the locality but on a sustainable basis for the future. The majority of Post Offices, large and small, are run on a franchise or agency basis – it’s a model that works. In South Woodford, it would mean Post Office services are secured for the future.”

Flats Recycling League: prizes to be won

New stop smoking helpline launched for Londoners

Redbridge Council is encouraging residents who live in flats to recycle more by offering prize funds of up to £800. The Flats Recycling League – into which all housing blocks across the borough are automatically entered – rewards two blocks of flats every three months, with residents of the winning blocks collectively deciding how to spend the cash.

A new stop smoking helpline for Londoners has been launched.

Smokers can call Stop Smoking London – which is funded by 30 London boroughs – seven days a week (9am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 11am to 4pm on weekends) to receive specialist telephone-based support and guidance to further help in their local area. Callbacks can also be arranged at regular intervals throughout the quitting process.

Silver Swans: ballet classes for the over-55s

Redbridge Classical Dance Studios – which runs ballet, jazz and tap dance classes in Snaresbrook, Wanstead, Buckhurst Hill and South Woodford – has been licensed by the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) to offer ‘Silver Swans’ ballet classes for the over-55s. “The classes are one hour in length and include a full warm-up, barre and centre, followed by a focus on recognisable repertoire from classical ballets, such as Swan Lake,” said Rebecca Chalklin and Miriam Rushworth. “We are gradually introducing Silver Swans classes across the world.

Open, fun and accessible, these classes will help improve mobility and energy levels, no matter how old you are,” added an RAD spokesperson. Classes take place at the Rovsco Scout Hall opposite Snaresbrook Station.

Relocation of delivery office postponed

The relocation of Royal Mail’s South Woodford delivery office has been postponed. Plans were in place to switch operations from the Marlborough Road site to Chingford at the end of September, but the move has since been put on hold to allow for ‘further planning’. At the time of writing, a new date is yet to be determined. “We are continuing to work with the Communication Workers Union and will confirm a revised date for this move to our people and our customers as soon as possible… There will be no impact on deliveries to customers during this time,” said a spokesperson for Royal Mail.

The move was deemed necessary due to a lack of space and customer parking at the South Woodford site. “This is part of our ongoing transformation… to provide delivery offices which are fit for purpose.”

Redbridge Young Labour to launch this November

Mayor to attend local remembrance services

A local group of the Labour Party’s national youth organisation will be launched at Wanstead Library on 30 November (7pm to 9pm).

“Redbridge Young Labour’s launch comes at an important time for the party in Redbridge as we have ambitious targets for the local elections in May,” said Alex Holmes, a university student from Ilford who has established the group for 14- to 26-year-olds.

The launch is free to attend for Labour Party members.

The Mayor of Redbridge Councillor Linda Huggett will join members of the community for a Remembrance Day service at the war memorial outside St Mary’s Church in South Woodford on 11 November from 9am. After paying her respects, Councillor Huggett will travel into London to take part in the Lord Mayor’s Show. A two-minute silence will also be observed at 11am at the Snaresbrook Road Garden of Remembrance, to be attended by the Deputy Mayor of Redbridge.

An outdoor cinema night in the gardens of St Thomas of Canterbury raised £2,000 for the cause

Members of the South Woodford Muslim Community Centre and St Thomas of Canterbury Church in Woodford Green have joined forces with a number of other religious groups to sponsor a family of Syrian refugees. “We are applying to welcome a refugee family to live in Redbridge and to help them integrate into life in the UK over a two-year period,” said a spokesperson for Redbridge Community Support, which also includes representatives from the Redbridge Islamic Centre, Salvation Army Ilford, Wanstead Quakers, Balfour Road Mosque and Ilford Methodist Church.

The group – which needs to raise £9,000 to fund the family’s expenses – are also seeking a landlord who would be willing to accept local housing rate to provide the family with a home.

NHS Property Services will be delivering a £175,000 package of building improvements to South Woodford Health Centre. Consulting and design agency McBains has been appointed to scope and deliver the works, which include improvements to the heating system and other essential building maintenance. “We’re pleased to be delivering this improvement work at the health centre, which will enhance facilities in the building for the benefit of local patients,” said Duncan Clough, construction manager for NHS Property Services in London. The programme of work has not been finalised, but it is planned to take place during the current financial year. “NHS Property Services will be working with tenants to ensure any disruption to services is kept to a minimum.”

I

established my business Muriel & Me in early 2017 when I was made redundant from my job as an art editor for luxury fashion magazines.

My redundancy coincided with my friend asking me to design her wedding invites in the style of a 1930s travel poster.

This formed the beginnings of what would become Muriel & Me, a company I hope local people will enjoy and support.

Having studied graphic design at Nottingham Trent University, I specialised in illustration and printmaking. I was particularly inspired by the works of David Hockney and Edward Bawden. Their ability to use tonal and accent colours whilst omitting certain details to give a picture more impact would inform the basis of my current designs.

Here, the graphic designer presents her festive George Lane image In June, I began designing and producing prints, tea towels and tote bags of the much-loved streets and scenes of Wanstead, before expanding my range to encompass Leytonstone and South Woodford as well.

My ‘Dog Goes Woof!’ print was featured in The Sunday Times…

I’ve always appreciated the local area’s iconic landmarks and wanted to celebrate them. These range from The Shrubbery in Wanstead to South Woodford’s Electric Parade and The Red Lion in Leytonstone.

Following my degree, I pursued a career as an editorial graphic designer, which gave me an insight into brand awareness and commercial design. This has helped make my illustrations and branding stand out from the crowd.

I want to make the everyday shine – we walk past a lot of these buildings, streets or landmarks every day without necessarily realising or stopping to appreciate them. I simply think of the places that encapsulate an area’s identity and start

developing the design from there. Some of my prints are originally linocuts, others are taken from photos and sketches with particular attention to the colour palette used, which helps imbue them with a bright, vintage feel. This ethos is continued throughout the other items I produce, with emphasis firmly placed on print and product quality.

Galvanised by the recent success of my sales, I have branched out into designing prints for adults and children, as well as children’s birthday cards. More recently, my Dog Goes Woof! print was featured in The Sunday

Times Homes section for best interior design pictures. I have also undertaken numerous bespoke commissions for people, giving their houses my signature style, designing wedding and christening invitations, as well as completing family portraits.

W

oodford Historical Society met for the first time at the Wilfred Lawson Temperance Hotel on Woodford High Road in March 1932. This, like so many grand buildings in the area, has subsequently been demolished.

The society promotes interest in the history of the area and maintains and develops an archive. In addition to information about local buildings, this includes local links to the East India Company, the effect of the introduction of the railway and knowledge of the famous with local connections, such as Sir Winston Churchill, Sylvia Pankhurst and William Morris.

We meet monthly from September to April, when the programme includes talks (usually illustrated) on varied

topics of historical interest with, of course, time for members to meet and talk over tea and coffee. During the summer months, we arrange visits to places of interest. A newsletter is distributed twice yearly, for which members are invited to submit articles. In fact, to mark our 80th anniversary, a book was published of reminiscences: Woodford – 80 Years of Memories, 1932–2012.

I am privileged to be chairman, working with a small, dedicated committee. We have over 200 members and welcome all with a general interest in history.

Jack’s back…

Woodford Pantomime first performed Jack and the Beanstalk in 1963, and most recently in 2011. Now, Judy Linard invites you to welcome Jack back to the Hawkey Hall stage for their 2018 production

W

hen the idea of a pantomime was first suggested for the next production of Woodford’s local amateur dramatic group, there was quite a lot of opposition from members. That was in 1962, and in January 2018, we will be producing our 56th panto: Jack and the Beanstalk.

The Sir James Hawkey Hall has been the home of the Woodford Pantomime for so long that many people refer to it as the Hawkey Hall pantomime. It takes four days for us to build the theatre, transforming the hall into a fully operational theatrical venue, including hiring tiered seating – so that even the very youngest of children can get a good view – and installing a lighting and sound rig to keep up with the special effects modern audiences expect.

Always a family friendly pantomime, a warm welcome awaits the young, old and everyone in between.

Pantomime is a great introduction to the theatre and we positively encourage shouting out and joining in!

Last January, our production of Beauty and the Beast was well received by lively audiences and nearly all performances were sold out. Felix (aka Richard Baker) won a NODA award for his hilarious performance as a rather large, pink French poodle and was very popular when, as always, the cast rushed to the auditorium to meet the audience. This has become a tradition and a very special part of the evening for the younger members of the audience. Along with all the fun, a fantastic £1,450 was raised for Scope, together with a special performance laid on for the families of children

with disabilities that make accessing the theatre difficult.

This time, Jack is back and ready to climb that beanstalk once more. The cast are committed and rehearse throughout the months leading up to the show, including during the Christmas break. This year, we even have a technical and dress rehearsal on New Year’s Day! Together with

the help of our enthusiastic band of volunteers, this year’s show promises to be as spectacular as ever.

Many of you have probably heard of the threatened closure of the Hawkey Hall, but for now it is safe and we will continue to endeavour that there will be pantomime in Woodford for many years to come.

As Redbridge Council announce a return to free garden waste collections, Steve Wilks and Scott Wilding explain the problems of the trialled paidfor scheme that sparked so many complaints

I

n December 2016, Redbridge Council announced it was cutting its free garden waste collection service in a bid to save £2m. Gardeners then had to fork out £50 for 50 biodegradable bags, which are picked up every fortnight.

The scheme was originally set to run between April and October, but has now been extended until 24 November.

Many gardeners, however, attacked the new service because they thought it was ‘rubbish’. When gardeners had used up all their bags, they had to pay for more or dispose of their waste at Chigwell Road recycling centre. Given the size of the bags, it meant the cost of disposing of green waste for an average house easily exceed £50 a year.

The new free service will run from March to November with fortnightly collections…

The green-fingered population of South Woodford has been furious with the new paid-for service, claiming the bags are flimsy, too small and tear at the first opportunity. There has also been problems with some people mixing green waste with general rubbish to get around the rules, making recycling more problematic when it needs to be sorted at the depot.

The council leader said the free service had to be cut because the

funding the council bagged for it in 2013 had run out. However, even in times of cuts there are choices. The council provides a free bulky waste collection service, which has not been scaled back or been made a paidfor option. Most residents would prioritise green waste collections over bulky waste as many have gardens in our leafy suburb.

Bulky waste collection tends to be for one-off items and most people expect to pay for this anyway.

While all London councils are making cuts to services and feeling financial pressures, Redbridge has increased the Council Tax, so residents are already contributing to the shortfall in revenues. Even in difficult economic times, it is crucial to maintain measures to protect our environment, encourage sustainability and look for cuts across a range of waste services, not drastically charge extra for one particular key service.

The council needed 10,000 residents to break even on this new scheme. At the time of writing, they have only 70% of this target, indicating the scheme was running at a loss.

The paid-for scheme has also caused chaotic congestion at the Chigwell Road recycling centre as residents not wanting to pay for the service dispose of their garden waste, making the experience unpleasant and time-consuming. Many cars have been seen queuing up at the tip, potentially to deliver just a bag of waste, resulting in unnecessary car journeys and associated pollution.

The new free service – which will run from March to November with fortnightly collections – will also see a return of the ‘old style’ bags, which will be provided to households with a garden.

So, with all things considered, it comes as no surprise that in October the council announced there would be a return to free garden waste collections next year. It follows seven months of

hirty years ago, coaching was largely used to support the transition needed with talented yet cantankerous executives. Now, it is a prevalent and respected aspect of HR and management practices for supporting individuals.

A mentor is usually a more experienced colleague; they use their knowledge to support their less experienced mentee.

A mentor can be directive and provide specific advice. A coach, however, is dedicated to the coachee’s commitment to their goal. They are not directive, instead they assist, challenge and encourage their coachee to find their own solutions.

People have coaches to: zz Help recognise where they need to develop personally to improve current work issues and to effectively reach personal or work goals. zz Develop their effectiveness as a leader or line manager, increasing confidence, resilience and self-awareness. zz Work more effectively with others, developing empathy

by being able to view things from different perspectives, and considering issues that may have been ignored or gone unidentified. zz Assist with the transition to additional accountability or responsibility, operating and communicating at different management levels.

In a coaching session, the coach facilitates the process through inquiry, using the ‘see and say’ process, allowing the coachee to consider aspects for themselves whilst creating space for them to see the opportunities and guiding them into taking tangible steps towards them.

Coaching sessions should be fully confidential, with coachees actively listening, which includes tone, pitch, pace and words, as well as non-verbal responses.

The coach will highlight anything that may be hindering the coachee from reaching their goals, perhaps self-limiting beliefs that may or may not be true. A coach will provide support in step changes that lead to fundamental shifts in attitude and behaviour. For example, a change from ‘reacting’ in any given situation to ‘directing’.

Remember, a coach does not need to be more experienced than you or ‘successful’ in your goal area. However, you do need to ensure you are comfortable being open and honest with them, so you can forge a deep trust level to work with them.

For the first time, over half those questioned for the British Social Attitudes survey said they have no religious belief. Millions of Londoners now lead good and meaningful lives without having a faith.

Most probably feel no need to label themselves. However, the chances are they are Humanists.

Humanists campaign for reform based on evidence and compassion…

So, why do some of us identify ourselves in this way? A label doesn’t always sit comfortably with ideas of individuality. One reason, to paraphrase Humanist celebrity Stephen Fry, is simply to ‘nail our colours to the mast’ in the face of irrational attempts to push back progress.

Another is the opportunity it provides for meeting and engaging with other likeminded, open-minded people.

Perhaps we take this for granted.

However, some find themselves in a workplace where it is difficult to say you are not religious.

Others brought up in religious families risk ostracism and the loss of their entire social network if they decide they no longer believe. For them, joining a group provides a haven of support and friendship.

change. Modern life involves increasingly complex issues, such as reproductive rights, a woman’s right to choose and the right for the terminally ill to decide how they die. Humanists campaign for reform based on evidence and compassion and the right to do as we wish, provided it doesn’t harm others. Likewise, in relation to issues such as equality, sexuality and gay marriage.

These are all areas where views derived from ancient scriptures have previously held sway.

Humanism is not a set of dogmas. One way of describing it is as a philosophical framework.

It helps to articulate views that most ethical, non-religious people hold, often without thinking about it. These include the importance of treating others as we would wish to be treated. This is a universal value Humanism shares with most religions. Another is a strong belief that this is the one life we have and the importance of making the most of it. Humanists also believe that science, evidence and reason are the most reliable tools for understanding the world and our place in it.

The increasing number of Humanist funerals and other ceremonies reflects a growing interest and awareness. But many people still only have a vague idea of what Humanism is or its positive benefits. Hopefully, our meeting this November will help provide some answers.

e have written in previous editions about the Local Plan being prepared by Redbridge Council – Redbridge Local Plan: 2015–2030 – which, when finalised, will be the basis for planning decisions and future development in the borough.

An independent consultant has suggested a number of modifications, which are a result of public representations on the plan, attended by the South Woodford Society over the summer.

The main modifications are the proposed reduction in housing figures by 220 units (from 650 to 430) and increases in employment and retail space, but once again, these do not appear to be backed up by any

As the consultation deadline looms for the revised Redbridge Local Plan, Louise Burgess from the South Woodford Society takes a look at some of the modifications made and their local impact… and keeps one eye on the potential threat to our cinema and growth’ tag, but useful explanatory text has been added, recognising the need to protect the special character and qualities of the area, and deleting the reference to a landmark building, which I think we all agree would be out of keeping with the character of South Woodford.

The only way to combat these increased threats to our community is to come together and show we are a united front of residents and businesses… solid infrastructure plans, which has always been a sticking point for many members of the society. These figures may still not be deemed appropriate by some quarters, but with the new London Plan housing figures (the consultation draft plan will be published at the end of November) and the even higher Department for Communities and Local Government housing figures, they should be welcomed as a move in the right direction. South Woodford does still keep its ‘investment

for any dense development plan, and this is particularly pertinent due to the rumours currently circulating relating to the sale of the lease of Sainsbury’s and the surrounding land – with the possibility of future development – and the perceived threat to the Odeon cinema.

The ‘planned’ development sites in this area are listed in the Local Plan, but more of an issue are the so-called ‘windfall sites’ of which this could be one, which cannot

be planned for and are therefore in addition to any planned developments. Sainsbury’s do not fare particularly well in the planning stakes, following their recent application to build a megalithic block of flats on their site in Ilford, with only 4% affordable housing.

We are already facing the loss of much-loved local services, such as the Royal Mail delivery office and Post Office (the site of which could be earmarked for a McDonald’s). Could we also be looking at losing one of our main leisure sites? We are planning to apply to the Twentieth Century Society and Art Deco groups, who ought to be in favour of the preservation of this site, and will back any attempt for the Odeon to be classified as an Asset of Community Value, so look out for a petition or further

information in the near future once we are fully aware of all the facts.

Another small but related point is that Churchfields and Oakdale Infants are no longer linked to the junior schools, so parents have to apply for Year 3 transfers. With the additional burden on local school places that an increase in housing numbers will bring, this can only be seen as further potential for local parents to lose school places.

The only way to combat these increased threats to our community is to come together and show Redbridge Council we are a united front of residents and businesses who care about our area and want to be involved in its future.

I attended the Mind Body Spirit show at Olympia and I came upon a stall displaying this bright purple book with gold printing on its cover. It looked mysterious and inviting and I could sense its energy from a distance.

The Knowledge Book is a universal book for all humanity and is currently studied in 35 countries.

It is a cosmic book that has come from the omega dimension to facilitate our evolution over the next 19 centuries. For that

purpose, the book reveals the universal laws and truths to our planet by shedding light on the ultimate secrets of existence, such as the creation of energy, matter, galaxies, living cells and the cosmic genetic engineering of the human race on Earth.

The book contains both knowledge and frequency (energy), thus helping the reader to understand universal secrets whilst habituating our physical, cellular body to the energy of higher dimensions, preparing us for our spiritual evolution. It is a ‘living book’, as evidenced by aura pictures using polycontrast interference photography. Cosmic technology unknown to us, called the light photon cyclone technique, loads time and dimensional energies onto letters in the book, which changes its aura on a daily basis since it captures and conveys to us the cosmic energy that showers the Earth.

It also continuously refreshes the meaning of its text with the incoming cosmic energy and adjusts its energy intensity to the capacity of each reader.

Group studies form a magnetic field of omega energy, which reflects to others and neutralises negativity and raises the vibrational level on Earth, thus accelerating the awakening of people and the expansion of their consciousness, empowering us to integrate and herald the much-awaited ‘golden age’.

’m way, way, past the age of ‘not speaking to strangers’.

How well I recall the instruction from my parents, every Saturday morning, when I was 11 and setting off across London to the Royal College of Music: “Remember: don’t speak to any strangers!”

I dare say I was obediently careful not to. I was much more interested in getting a front seat upstairs on the bus from Liverpool Street to the Albert Hall (a route devised by my father virtually eliminating the need to cross any busy roads).

I was glued to the great city sights: St Paul’s Cathedral, still, then, the object of almost mystical veneration for its defiant survival of the Blitz; the doom-laden Law Courts in the Strand; was a judge, even as I passed cheerfully by, donning the black cap and sentencing someone ‘to be hanged by the neck until dead’? A glimpse of chandeliers beyond deep velvet curtains in exclusive clubs in Piccadilly, and the wide circle at Hyde Park Corner unencumbered by bus stops as we swept round towards Kensington.

We are truly inhabitants of a ‘global village’. And South Woodford is our small corner of it Last week, I flew from Oslo to Edinburgh. “If you’ve time to spare, go by air!” Yes, the flight was delayed. I had “proceeded to the gate”, past all the time-filling attractions of the duty-free and the coffee shops and burger bars, and now sat among an expectant plane-load of strangers. More strange than most was the tall, bearded man sitting next to me: ruggedly austere in long black robes but with endearingly scuffed and dusty trainers and a black woolly hat. Soon, he wasn’t a stranger: “Was he a native of Norway?” “No, he was a Scotsman.” (At that point, I noticed that the woolly hat was not quite concealing a mop of curly red hair). He was a Russian Orthodox priest but based in Glasgow, a former athlete and keen skier: “Can’t ski now, in this kit, obviously,” he laughed. He was a keen follower of football

and rugby and had travelled widely, spending some years working in a leper colony. “You receive back in warmth and hospitality more than you can possibly give.” Unbelievably, when boarding was finally announced, we had established we had three good friends in common, Jesuit priests from the small community that was based, for a time, down in Cowslip Road, E18! We are truly inhabitants of a ‘global village’.

And South Woodford is our small corner of it.

Another encounter occurred a year or two ago on the zebra crossing at the top of Glebelands Avenue. It was the ‘stranger’ who took the initiative: “I do like your Bermuda shorts!” she remarked, right there in the middle of the black and white lines with the stationary cars on each side.

Clearly, this required me to return with her to continue the conversation. Such a forthright comment on a first meeting! I put down my shopping. After 20 minutes or so of chat, we agreed it would be nice if I went round for tea. Such an extraordinary woman with stories to tell of narrow escapes from advancing

armies and terrible losses and wartime tragedies.

She was Hungarian and Jewish and in her mid-80s, with more of ‘a past’, I suspect, than most of us, but all perky and fragrantly modish and alive in the present and looking forward to new experiences in the future. Including what turned out to be many a shared cuppa with me.

We are, of course, very close to the Crown Courts at Snaresbrook. There was a rather striking-looking gentleman, clearly a barrister, in his black gown and smart waistcoat and the ‘give-away’ pair of white bands at the neck, who used often to be seen returning from his day in court walking down George Lane. Not infrequently he would turn in to The George to enjoy a companionable pint with a small coterie of regulars.

I couldn’t help noticing him, standing out in his official attire amongst the general run of shoppers. One day, I happened to be walking behind him on my way to Boots when suddenly he was surrounded by sprouts, tomatoes and potatoes rolling

around on the pavement. The plastic Sainsbury’s bag of an elderly, very bent-over lady had burst under the heavy weight and splayed its contents in all directions. Without hesitation, our lawyer was down on his dignified knees, harvesting the vegetables and comforting their owner, who was overcome by a mix of embarrassment and panic.

I spoke to him a few days later, remarking on his kindness. We continued to greet each other for months to come. No longer strangers.

Look, dear readers, don’t imagine I take lightly the responsibility we have to our children. My son and daughter were, and their sons and daughters are, made fully aware of the need for caution.

And hopefully, they learn discrimination. But as the years go on, and there is, reportedly, widespread loneliness in our communities, we oldsters can take the risk. And who knows?

The next stranger you greet may turn out to be an angel in disguise.

igh streets never stay the same; they may have some long-standing and much-loved establishments but they are constantly changing and reflecting what happens over time in society.

Because of the 2007 smoking ban and the rise of electronic cigarettes, South Woodford now has a vape shop. Hale (as in ‘inhale’) opened in the former site of Charlie’s Sweet Emporium in September (166 George Lane; 020 8530 6909). If you are interested in quitting tobacco smoking, pop in to see Caillin and Kyle, who are big on advice and customer service. You can even sample some fruity and fresh flavours, including blue wave or blackcurrant, at the flavour bar.

George Lane still has a lot going for it, with several independent shops…

Further down George Lane we now have a small Subway shop where David Anthony’s Shoes used to be (116 George Lane; 020 8989 3227). Subway is a large, American fast-food franchise that primarily sells submarineshaped sandwiches. Fast-food consumption is on the rise and Subway is one of the fastestgrowing franchises in the world.

Another new restaurant in South Woodford is Dalchini (127 High Road; 020 8504 3333), which means ‘cinnamon’ in Hindi. Owner Murad lives in Woodford Green and saw a gap in the market for an affordable, independent restaurant serving rich dishes of fine Indian cuisine, which are “unique, consistent and cooked fresh every day”.

Alongside the opening of new businesses, we’re also seeing changes relating to some older ones. The Post Office and Royal Mail delivery office, which have been a key feature of South Woodford’s high street

In the second of an occasional series of articles, local resident Cate Jolley gives an update on the recent changes to our high street and considers how these reflect wider developments in society

for 60 years, are both facing restructuring. The delivery office is planning to relocate to Chingford and the Post Office is being offered as a franchise within another local shop.

The delivery office site has been advertised for sale as a development opportunity, a fate which also allegedly awaits the site of Waltham Forest Fencing (142 High Road; 020 8506 1355) and Winston House Preparatory School (140 High Road; 020 8505 6565). Waltham Forest Fencing – which offers decking, timber garden fencing and sheds – will close its South Woodford site on 21 December and continue trading in Sewardstone in Waltham Abbey from 4 January. Winston House was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

The site of the Odeon cinema, Sainsbury’s, Boots and the Lizard Lounge is also up for sale. Some are concerned this site may be redeveloped in the future and the listed cinema building made into flats, although the existing businesses may simply continue to operate with a new landlord.

Another move, but staying local, is Little Black Dress (now located at 67 George Lane and accessed via Station Passage; 07804 834 095). Creative director Maria has over 25 years’ industry experience in the design and

manufacture of handcrafted dresses. The popularity of the little black dress is a trend that has stood the test of time, having first originated in 1926 when Vogue published a picture of Coco Chanel wearing one.

So, what do all these changes signify for South Woodford?

Well, I popped into Crescendo (160 George Lane; 020 8504 1946) – Redbridge’s only music shop – for the first time recently.

They stock some truly beautiful wooden instruments. Owner Sara has lived locally her whole life, run Variations Dance Studio since 1998 and opened the music shop in 2016. When I asked her what she thought of the state of our high street, Sara replied: “George Lane still has a lot going for it, with several independent shops.”

Crescendo demonstrates some of the unique creativity that exists in South Woodford.

I also chatted to Melinda, another local resident and business owner, who opened Dada Café in 2016 (237 High Road). Dada Café serves speciality coffees, artisan cakes and light lunches and takes its name from the coffee and art-based cultural movement of Dadaism. “We are very happy to be open in South Woodford

and business is going very well,” said Melinda. It certainly looks that way, with people sometimes queuing out the door to get their morning brew!

Although some businesses come and go, the high street will continue to evolve with the times and to meet the demand of the people who live and work here. So, if you value it, use it and vote with your feet.

Wrapping HUB

O

ver a period of time, God spoke to Nigel and Nicky Langford about planting a church in north-east London.

In January 2014, it seemed to pick up the pace and over the following six months, God spoke really clearly on a number of occasions. One night in January 2014, Nigel was looking at a map and found Woodford zooming out at him. It had been a long day but still, this was quite impactful. Just a few weeks later, when there was a Tube strike, the Langfords were watching TV and the reporter was broadcasting from South Woodford Station. It started to feel more than a coincidence.

There is no limit to the number of presents we will wrap…

HUB Church subsequently started in April 2015 when a team of people, including the Langfords, met in South Woodford to start a small group (or hub) in their lounge. In October 2015, HUB Church was commissioned to begin as a church plant.

As time elapsed, more hubs were created and that is how

the church is growing as we base ourselves in this area. Each hub looks and feels different, but they’re all great fun and full of passion for blessing our community. We believe that as we encounter God, so our street or neighbourhood where we are placed will be impacted positively.

The Christmas Wrap idea came out of our desire to bless the community, to meet and engage with people going about their day. We set up a stall outside Boots on George Lane and wrap people’s presents and chat with them. It’s as simple as that!

We have built a good relationship with the manager at Boots and they are very supportive of us being there, sharing the Christmas spirit with the community.

Alongside wrapping presents for people, we also put some bags together that we fill with a few Christmas chocolates and a Christmas story booklet from The Bible Society. We hand them out to people who are passing by and in the local shops. They are always well received by both children and adults. Who doesn’t like a bit of chocolate at Christmas?

Christmas is a great time of year and there are always things going on for families. Parties and plays make it easy to find yourself being very busy, and it can also be a stressful time too.

So we like to bring a bit of cheer to the street as people pass by and help take a bit of the stress away by wrapping presents or engaging with them with a smile or a conversation.

We do all this for free. There is no charge for wrapping a present and there is no limit to the number of presents we will wrap. We provide the wrapping paper, you just need to provide the present.

r Amjad Malik has been a dentist for 35 years, with 31 of them spent in Woodford. He is proud he still treats some of his original patients – as well as their children and grandchildren.

What changes in dentistry have you seen during the last 35 years?

The greatest difference has been in attitudes and expectations – people are more conscious about their health and looks, and at any age, they want to be able to eat all the foods they enjoy.

But major advances in materials and technology mean dentists can do much more for patients than before. Processes are more comfortable for the patient, they are also safer, and the results are superior.

I enjoy changing people’s attitudes to dental care…

How do you react to patients who have neglected their teeth?

I help every patient as much as I can, and will achieve the best for them whatever the reason for their oral health issues. I try to find out the whole picture because sometimes teeth or gums have been affected by general ill-health or stress. If people feel embarrassed, I try to make them feel more comfortable. It’s good that they have decided to come and see me!

What is the most satisfying element of your work?

Taking someone whose mouth has been compromised in some way, and bringing their teeth and gums back to full health. It’s great to see them permanently

That may sound corny but it’s true! I also enjoy changing people’s attitudes so they start seeing dental care as something very positive.

Who do you most admire?

Dr John Kois, who runs the prestigious Kois Centre in Seattle.

The centre offers advanced training for dentists from all over the world, in finding the best ways to help patients keep their teeth for longer.

The Kois philosophy is to base every decision on the latest scientific knowledge. All new techniques and developments are continually analysed and assessed using statistical evidence, for the greater benefit of the patient.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Becoming a Kois Mentor. I can now pass on those skills to fellow professionals worldwide.

Would you recommend dentistry as a career to a young person?

Yes! It’s a very rewarding career in helping people, and one

that continually presents new challenges but is always fascinating.

In over 30 years, I have helped motivate and train several dentists, some of whom have since gone on to specialist clinical roles.

If you had not trained as a dentist, is there another career you might have enjoyed?

The antiques world appeals to me but I know I’d never sell much as I’d have trouble parting with things! Otherwise, I’d like to be an architect. I like the detail, and am interested in old buildings.

What are your leisure interests?

Travel – I’ve been round the world. I like the theatre, too.

But right now, thanks to one of my patients, I’m learning beekeeping. I’m interested in the part bees play in our lives.

Without bees we’d have no

flowers or fruit. Worryingly, the number of bees has considerably reduced in the past decade. Bees can have a direct bearing on our health, for example it is believed that eating honey from local hives means you should be less prone to hay fever.

What is your favourite music?

[Short pause] I’m trying to decide whether to admit I like ABBA or not! I like a wide variety, from Fleetwood Mac to Adele. Also classical music – Classic FM on Sunday mornings.

What is your favourite film?

The Last Samurai, with Tom Cruise. It teaches integrity and honour. Both are important in my own life.

ost of us are inseparable from our mobile phones – they wake us up in the mornings, help us get to where we want to go, entertain us on the way and allow us to keep in touch with friends and business wherever we are.

According to findings published in the RAC’s Report on Motoring 2016, the number of people who admit to using a handheld mobile phone while driving has increased from 8% in 2014 to 31% in 2016. While it is tempting to have a look at a message or find out who is calling when you hear your phone buzz, you must remember the use of a handheld phone while driving is illegal, and has been since 2003.

If you use your mobile phone, your reaction time is 50% slower and you are four times more likely to be involved in a car crash. Government figures suggest that: zz Drivers using a hands-free or handheld mobile phone are slower at recognising and reacting to hazards. zz Your reaction times are two times slower if you text and

It is illegal to use a handheld phone to follow a map, read a text or check social media while driving. This applies even if you are stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. It is also illegal to use a handheld phone or similar device when supervising a learner driver. You can only use a handheld phone if you are safely parked or need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop.

Using hands-free (for navigation, for example) is not illegal.

However, if this distracts you and affects your ability to drive safely, you can still be prosecuted by the police.

If you’re caught using a handheld phone while driving, you will get six penalty points on your licence and a fine of £200. Points on your licence will result in higher insurance costs. For newer drivers, if you get six points in the first two years after passing your test, you will lose your licence.

Do You Hear What I Hear?

I

t is the season of anticipation. The nights grow darker, the air grows colder, and we in turn seek out the light. This is a very special time at St Mary’s, and preparations are under way for some of the most meaningful services and events of the whole year. One cold evening this November, as for many years past, the choir will sing Gabriel Fauré’s haunting Requiem service in remembrance of the souls of all those who have left this world. We then look forward with increasing excitement to Christmas, singing songs of hope and waiting as we approach the biggest, most community-focused service of the year: Lessons and Carols.

Music has been a part of Woodford’s life through St Mary’s for centuries…

Lessons and Carols is a hugely popular event, and all members of the community, regardless of faith and background, are welcome to attend this joyful extravaganza of music and words. St Mary’s will be filled with people of all ages, candles will glow inside and out, lighting the way to the big front doors.

The excited hush will be broken first by the voice of a lone child, bravely singing the words of the Christmas story, Once in Royal David’s City. The service alternates readings about Christmas with performances and the singing of favourite carols, some by the choir, and the most popular involving everyone who attends. In the last few years, we have also invited local musicians to bring along their instruments, creating a community orchestra

Ahead of an important season of musical performances at St Mary’s Church in South Woodford, Director of Music Anita Datta explains why the upcoming concerts and services transcend religion to accompany the church’s fantastically impressive organ, which has over 2,000 pipes. The noise is glorious.

St Mary’s is a special place for music, and every Friday at 8pm the members of the choir can be found limbering up their vocal muscles ready for the weekly rehearsal. Some of them have been members for five years, others for over 50, but they are all part of a beautiful and uniquely English tradition of sacred choral music that goes back over 500 years. There have been choirs in churches since before the Tudor period, and there has been a choir at St Mary’s since at least the 1800s. The choir sing every Sunday morning at Eucharist and in the traditional evensong services on Sunday evenings.

The music performed ranges from Baroque and Renaissance classical styles to modern works written by living English composers, and is chosen not just for its artistic beauty but for its ability to inspire and to nourish the soul.

All choir members volunteer their time and skill freely, and new members are always welcome. As director of music, I lead and train the choir – previous directors now work in a number of the country’s great cathedrals.

I am delighted that in the past 18 months, child choristers have been re-established at

St Mary’s, and it is a joy to see and hear local children singing enthusiastically every Sunday morning, enjoying themselves whilst gaining confidence and an education in music at the same time.

St Mary’s also regularly hosts concerts, bringing a wide range of community groups, choirs and young professional musicians to the heart of Woodford. This season, we will welcome La Folie Baroque Consort, who have just returned from a tour of the Isle of Wight. La Folie stems from projects with students in the Chichester area, but has now branched out and includes players from further afield. The aim of the orchestra is to bring some of the lesserknown Baroque works to a wider audience in a dynamic way, and they are currently fundraising to record an album of English music from 1500 to 1770.

Previous concerts and events at St Mary’s have showcased jazz piano, world music, soul, Bollywood and opera, and we encourage as many people as possible to explore what we have to offer. There is truly something for everyone’s ears.

We are a working church, but we are also a community space and music is one of the ways in which we enjoy welcoming and meeting people from the wider Woodford community. We would love to share the awe and wonder of Lessons and Carols, or our nativity services, with you. We invite you to reflect, meditate and remember loved ones passed at our services for remembrance and All Souls, or to discover new music and artists through our concerts. Music has been a part of Woodford’s life through St Mary’s for centuries, so come and be part of a great English tradition and experience joy with us this cold, winter season.

Photography biography

I

grew up in Clayhall and went to school in Wanstead.

For nearly 25 years I lived in Leytonstone, but now reside in Clayhall once more. I joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society in 1999, having previously been a member of the now defunct Leytonstone and Wanstead Camera Club, which met at Wanstead House – where the Woodford and Wanstead club now meet.

My interest in photography began when I was a teenager, using my parents’ old equipment and ‘borrowing’ my brother’s camera. I received the first camera of my own for my 18th birthday (a Sigma Mark I with 39–80mm zoom lens), but all I have left of that is the lens cap!

Whilst at university, I made much use of the darkroom there for developing and printing black and white photos, and I

later began to use colour slide film too.

I joined the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) in 1996 and achieved my Licentiateship soon after. There are three levels of distinction – Licentiateship (LRPS), Associateship (ARPS) and Fellowship (FRPS) – and working towards an ARPS has long been on my to-do list.

In the early 2000s, I took part in the joint RPS and English Heritage Images of England project, where volunteers took more than 300,000 photographs of England’s listed buildings. I have also contributed to the RPS London region’s Bleeding London project to photograph every street in the capital’s A–Z (the idea is based on the novel of the same name by Geoff Nicholson).

hen we think about the layout of roads, there is a tendency to presume that it has always been thus. Indeed, we also think of all roads as being very solid structures made of asphalt or concrete to take the load of heavy motor vehicles.

In reality, most modern types of vehicle have only existed for little more than 100 years.

In earlier years, horses were about the only source of motive power and vehicles had wooden wheels with an iron rim. This put considerable stress on the structure of the roads, and whatever we may think of the state of our local streets, those

In the Epping Forest area, the population was small and ‘traffic’ from the west had to either cross the River Lea at Bow Bridge or use very basic ferries. The ‘main’ roads followed the valleys of the Rivers Lea and Roding, but even these were often impassable in the wet months of the year. The narrow wheels and the iron-shod horses cut up the roads there were, and even in the summer months they could often be heavily rutted and so uneven as to be barely passable.

What were shown on maps, even as recently as the late 19th century, were often merely

tracks that were used by just pedestrians or horses, whether ridden or as pack animals. Those who can remember Epping Forest before the Conservators made the metalled horse rides in the 1980s will appreciate how even horses and walkers can cut up the ground in a way comparable to wheeled vehicles.

In the southern areas of Epping Forest, such as around Leyton Flats and Gilbert’s Slade, the soils are generally more gravelly. This means they are more free draining but nonetheless cut up with heavy use.

The introduction of turnpike trusts and the developments in construction of better-quality roads by the likes of John Macadam did begin to signal a better way forward. However, these did not occur in our area until the 1830s and even then only on what we now consider to be major roads.

here are many misunderstandings about wills and inheritance. It’s a subject we would all rather not have to think about, but it’s also a subject we all have to deal with at some stage. Here are a few key points to take note of.

Do I need to make special measures in my will?

I’ve been with my partner for 20 years but we’ve never married. Will I get their estate when they die?

No. Unmarried couples (same sex or heterosexual – not civil partners) do not automatically get any of their deceased partner’s estate, regardless of how long they have been together. Without a will, the deceased’s estate passes to their family (and, if no close family, to the Crown). If a couple have been together, living as man and wife, for at least two years, the surviving partner may make a claim on the deceased’s estate under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, but this will involve high legal fees with no guarantee of success.

With the new Residence Nil Rate Band, can a couple leave £1m between them free of inheritance tax (IHT)?

Not necessarily. Every person has an allowance of £325,000 (the Nil Rate Band or NRB), which they can leave free of IHT. In addition, as from April this year, every person has an allowance of £100,000 (the Residence Nil

Rate Band or RNRB), which they can use only against their main residence (I have simplified this). The RNRB will increase by £25,000 each April until April 2020. If not used on the first death, the NRB and RNRB can be transferred to the surviving spouse (or civil partner). Any transfer of assets between spouses (or civil partners) is free of IHT and so does not use the NRB. So, the current maximum that a couple can pass on free of IHT is £850,000, provided their main residence is worth at least £200,000. From 6 April 2020, this will be £1m, provided their main residence is worth at least £350,000. However, the RNRB is only available if the main residence is passed down to lineal descendants, including adopted and foster children (not siblings, nephews and nieces or non-family members). The RNRB is reduced by £1 for every £2 that your estate exceeds £2m (including business assets that normally would be exempt from IHT). So, careful planning is required if, on the second death after April 2020, the estate will be more than £2.7m.

I have a business that qualifies for Business Property Relief (BPR). Do I need to make special measures in my will?

Yes. BPR is not an allowance like the NRB. It is a relief set against other assets that reduces IHT payable on an estate. To get the full benefit of BPR, a qualifying business (a trading business owned for at least two years), must be passed on as a specific legacy in a will, otherwise some of the BPR may be lost.

12 tips of Christmas Christmas is a busy time and sometimes we forget to take basic security precautions, says Steve Wilks from Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch, who offers 12 security tips for the festive season

hristmas is a time of great preparation with many distractions. Here are my top 12 tips for protecting your home and belongings at this time of year and for ensuring Father Christmas is the only unseen visitor who enters your home this December.

Don’t put gift packaging boxes out for recycling…

1. Hide gifts: make sure gifts and valuables – wrapped and unwrapped – are not visible from any home or car windows.

2. Bikes: if Father Christmas brings you a bike for Christmas (lucky you!), register it at bikeregister.com.

3. Security markings: mark any expensive gifts you receive (write your postcode with a UV pen). This will make it harder for burglars to sell the items and allow police to return them to you. Let your home insurance company know if you have new expensive items.

4. Inventory: make an inventory of the most important and valuable items in your home and keep the list in a safe place (not on a laptop, in case that gets stolen). You could use immobilise.com, an online personal belongings inventory service.

5. Gift packaging: don’t put gift packaging boxes out for recycling or leave them

sticking out of your bin.

Thieves will notice! Store boxes out of sight until you can dispose of them at the local recycling site.

6. Entrances: lock all doors and windows, leave a light on and draw the curtains if you go out after dark. Keep your doors and windows locked from the inside, even when you are inside your home.

Don’t leave window keys in their locks.

7. Alarm wiring: check that all wiring is fully concealed. A burglar could look for places to disconnect the system.

8. Outbuildings: keep sheds and garages locked at all times and don’t leave spare keys inside them.

9. Burglar alarm: if you have a faulty alarm that frequently goes off, get it fixed and tell your neighbours that it’s been repaired.

10. Kitchen cupboards: stash your small valuables in boxes and cans in kitchen cupboards – the last place burglars will look!

11. Lost key cover: if you lose your keys, change the locks immediately. Check lost key cover on your home insurance policy.

12. Emergency contacts: phone 101 to contact your local police team in a non-emergency situation or 999 if it is an emergency.
