An art teacher once asked my A level art class what the purpose of frames were. Aside from secondary functions of protection and usability, the primary purpose of a frame is, of course, to complement and enhance the image it surrounds. Like a newborn baby clothed for the first time, the beauty emanates from that contained within.

LOCAL MPs

The frames and borders that surround our family portraits and art gallery displays are a very literal example of how we like to beautify our boundaries, but the concept exists on many levels. The handpainted door number sign; the personalised phone case; the colour of our passport cover; these are all things that delineate a boundary of sorts, with the ‘main attraction’ equally functionable without such aesthetic considerations. Boundaries, it would seem, are things we like to like.

Boundaries in a geographical sense are no different. We use them to define our nations, our allegiances and our governing bodies. We like them because of the clarity they provide to our identities. We decorate them with flags, with sporting mascots and cultural icons.

And on a local level, they define our communities and our councils.

As a local magazine, we thrive on the beauty that exists within our own community’s boundaries. We take pleasure in championing all that is good within those boundaries, which are all the more prominent in this, a local election period. And if you will indulge me one final stroke of the art analogy brush, I’ll sign off by saying we are proud to be the frame to the masterpiece that is South Woodford.

Possibly the last chance to view gardens of Hurst House as historic home is put up for sale

The open day will take place on 7 May from 2pm to 5pm (admission: £5). This may be the last time the gardens will be open as Hurst House has been put on the market with a guide price of £3.75m.

First votes for new South Woodford wards

A right royal wedding gardening competition

Council elections will take place this May, with all London borough councillor seats up for selection. In Redbridge, 22 wards will be contested, including the newly created South Woodford and Churchfields wards. South Woodford has 12 nominated candidates, while Churchfields has nine candidates. Both wards will be represented by three councillors. The polls open at 7am on 3 May, closing at 10pm.

Around 210,000 people are registered to vote in Redbridge.

Entries are invited for this year’s Redbridge in Bloom, an annual amateur gardening competition now in its 23rd year. “Our theme this year is ‘A right Royal Wedding Garden’ in celebration of the marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle,” said a Redbridge Council spokesperson.

Categories include best front garden, best container garden and best community display.

Deadline for entries – which must be a space that is clearly visible from the road – is 9 July.

The gardens of a 300-year-old house in Woodford Green will be open to the public this May as part of the charitable National Gardens Scheme. Hurst House on Broomhill Walk was built in 1714 and features a 300-foot rear garden, which was designed by Percy Cane in 1953 and features in his book The Earth is my Canvas.

“The reason for opening the garden is to share its beauty with our neighbourhood. In early May the garden is particularly beautiful, although this year we have to wait and see whether the

South Woodford delivery office to close this May

The Royal Mail delivery office on Marlborough Road, South Woodford will close on 14 May, relocating to Chingford.

“Royal Mail acknowledges the interest the relocation has raised within the community.

Whilst we welcome feedback from customers, we need to modernise our operations and provide better and fit-forpurpose facilities… Customers do not need to collect their mail from the delivery office if they aren’t able to… Royal Mail can now leave many mail items with a neighbour if customers are not at home when we attempt delivery. Customers can nominate a dedicated neighbour to take in their parcels by filling in a form at their delivery office.

Customers can also arrange a redelivery free of charge on a day that is convenient for them,” said a Royal Mail spokesperson.

A portrait of Redbridge: discover local artists and those who came here to paint Images of Woodford and the surrounding area will feature in a presentation about Redbridge’s rich artistic history this May. “This is Part Two of a lecture I gave at Wanstead Library last December on local art and artists, but if you missed that one, it doesn’t matter. That talk even inspired a member of the audience to give a similar one on Buckhurst Hill artists,” said local historian Jef Page. “I’ll include sketches of Wanstead and Woodford by Robert Barltrop, and paintings by Alfred Bennett Bamford. St Mary’s Church in South Woodford is seeking to recruit new bell ringers from within the local community as part of an initiative by the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers (CCCBR). “On 11 November 2018 we commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War. Around 1,400 bell ringers lost their lives during that conflict. The CCCBR has set the bell ringing community the goal of recruiting and training an equal number of new bell ringers during 2018 as those lost in the war,” said Kate Walker.

St Mary’s Church has a ring of eight bells, with the tenor bell (the lowest pitch) weighing 10.5 cwt (530 kg). “One does not need supreme strength to master handling a bell. It is more about a consistent technique to control the bell through its swing.”

‘Lively debate’ at South Woodford Society AGM

Fed up with the amount of litter in South Woodford?

The South Woodford Society are urging more residents to join them as they work to defend local services and champion local causes. The community group, which held their AGM at the end of March, was founded in 2015.

“The meeting was well attended and, as usual, was the scene of lively debate! Many issues were discussed as well as the benefits and challenges of living in South Woodford,” said Louise Burgess.

The South Woodford Society is organising a community litter pick on 13 May from 11am. “Do you want to work with others in your community and live in a nicer, cleaner environment? If yes, please join us at our litter pick,” said a group spokesperson.

Volunteers should meet outside South Woodford Tube station (opposite the Railway Bell). “We are also trying to get funding to brighten up some of the green areas. A few bulbs can make a big difference to everyone’s mood on a grey morning!”

Organisers of Hitchcock’s Home – an annual celebration of director and producer Sir Alfred Hitchcock in his home town of Leytonstone – are inviting filmmakers in South Woodford to be part of this year’s event. “Hitchcock’s Home is also about celebrating local creative talent and we’re calling out for film shorts to show… So, if you’re a local filmmaker, have produced something on a local theme, anything ‘Hitch-esque’ or on the theme of ‘leading ladies’, we’d love to hear from you. You could get exposure to over 900 people and the chance to talk about your craft,” said event organiser Jeanne Holland. Deadline for entries is 20 May. Walk on the Wealthy side

The Rookery was built towards the end of the 17th century, near the top of George Lane, and was the home of the Godfrey family for many years. Michael Godfrey was the first deputy governor of the newly founded Bank of England. He was killed while visiting the King of Bavaria in Flanders in 1695 to represent the bank in discussing matters about the British army, which was fighting there. Later generations of the family served the East India Company, including Peter Godfrey (1695–1769), who became the Chairman of the Court of Directors. The memorial erected in St Mary’s churchyard to commemorate the family is of great importance. It was designed by Sir Robert Taylor and is a replica of columns he used in the Transfer Office of the Bank of England, demolished long ago.

Holmleigh, a listed Georgian house, survives opposite St Mary’s Church Woodford Hall, which stood to the north of the church, has an interesting history. Originally the manor house, it was bought

by Christopher Crowe from Sir Richard Child in 1707. Crowe served as a diplomat in Italy but married Charlotte, widow of Lord Baltimore, in Geneva in 1715. Sadly, Charlotte died in 1720 and is commemorated by a large marble memorial inside St Mary’s. In 1727 Christopher Crowe sold Woodford Hall to William Hunt. Charlotte was an illegitimate granddaughter of Charles II, and because of legal

Several retired city gents and other notable people lived nearby during the 18th century and the sites of their houses will be explored on a short walk led by local historian Georgina Green this May, finishing at the churchyard where their memorials are listed. They could afford the best that money could buy! safeguards for her property, it was necessary to pass an Act of Parliament to allow Crowe to sell Woodford Hall.

William Hunt was a tobacco merchant who served as the governor of the Bank of England (1749–1752). When he died in 1767, Woodford Hall was inherited by his nephew of the same name who was a captain with the East India Company.

He had the house rebuilt in 1771 using Thomas Leverton as the architect. He later changed his name to Hunt Mickelfield in recognition of a significant inheritance from the family of his mother. Their memorial is known locally as the ‘tea-caddy’.

Another resident was William Morris. He was a prosperous bill and discount broker who moved with his family to Woodford Hall in 1840. His son, the famous designer of the same name, lived there from the age of six for the next eight years – a very impressionable time of his life. It is clear that living in close proximity to Epping Forest had a great effect on his artistic ideas and writing.

William Morris Senior died in 1847 and was buried at St Mary’s.

When his estate was settled, the family moved to the Water House in Lloyd Park, Forest Road, Walthamstow, which now houses the William Morris Gallery.

Holmleigh, a listed Georgian house that survives opposite St Mary’s Church, was the home of John Popplewell (c.1757–1829), a surgeon who spent his life looking after his neighbours.

He was a local Justice of the Peace and took a keen interest in church affairs. John and his sisters, Ann and Rebecca, were generous benefactors to the community, which regarded them with respect and affection.

The Popplewell family tomb is right at the back of the church, but there is a fine memorial to the family inside as well.

Another important memorial in the churchyard is the mausoleum for the Raikes and Mathew families, which was designed

by Jesse Gibson. When Job Mathew died in 1802, he was the governor of the Bank of England, so Sir John Soane (who had taken over from Taylor as architect to the Bank of England) came out to Woodford to inspect the work. He insisted that the lettering be cut especially deep in the stone, which might explain why the older lettering on the front of the memorial has lasted better than that at the side, commemorating later members of the family.

centenary of the First World War with a spoken word event. As a mark of respect, we want to pay our regards to our ancestors and fellow men and women who served our country. This event will run parallel to National Poetry Day and is very fitting with its honourable theme.

Redbridge Drama Centre will be host to The Lynx Theatre, who will be showcasing a long-running, one-woman show about Sylvia Pankhurst, updated and directed by William Alderson. The first performance was in 1987, with more than 100 performances since in schools, art centres and other venues across England and Ireland. By working with William Alderson, we hope to review the messages and inspiration from the play to ignite conversation within our community. The play will run for schools and adults during the festival.

David Silkoff, a well-known contributor to the Woodford Festival, will be returning this year with local pianist Cathy Davies. They have given many successful recitals; their repertoire embraces music from Bach to Stravinsky, Gershwin to Sinatra. David has given recitals at the Purcell Room and for the London Schubert Society.

The art of

cycling

The first event took place in 1882 and carried on until 1914 with a few years break in between.

There was also a re-creation of the event in 2000 to celebrate the millenium.

Prizes included half a guinea for the best fancy costumed gentleman…

The meet was a great social event for the area. Local people turned out in their thousands to watch the parade, which took place in the middle of June.

Entertainment was also provided along the route and included, for example, music by Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest Brass Band playing at the bandstand on Wanstead Flats and garden parties and refreshments provided by local establishments, such as the Wilfred Lawson Hotel in Woodford Green.

As part of Local History Month celebrations, a children’s craft session will take place at Woodford Green Library this May, themed around a historic cycling event that brought the local community together. Sue Page reports Woodford into Epping Forest.

The judging of costumes and of the decorated bikes took place on the green in Woodford. When darkness fell, the cyclists rode back through Wanstead and Woodford with their bikes lit by lanterns.

Over the years, a vast amount of money was raised for charities.

The 1911 event programme states: “Great are the needs of the hospitals, which depend almost entirely upon voluntary help; and although it is not possible for many to subscribe largely, it is within the power of all to spare a few pence to help on a noble and deserving cause, and for this, we issue an earnest appeal.”

Collectors walked among the crowds with their collecting tins.

Between 1882 and 1910, £4,600 was raised for good causes. This

would be equivalent to about £525,000 in today’s money. In 1911, 27 charities benefitted from the money raised from the event.

These included Dr Barnardo’s Homes in Barkingside, Woodford Jubilee Hospital, the Invalid Children’s Aid Society and Leyton, Walthamstow and Wanstead ‘s Children’s and General Hospital. Certificates were given to collectors who collected more than 15 shillings.

First-class certificates were given to those who collected more than 30 shillings.

Prizes given included those for the best fancy dress, the best

decorated bicycle, the club with the most competitors and for the most money raised. These included one guinea for the club with the greatest muster, half a guinea for the best fancy costumed gentleman, a ‘Colonia’ lamp for the rider of the best illuminated machine and a framed photograph for the club judged to have produced the best tableau.

A total of 19 cycle clubs took part in the 1911 event. Individuals not affiliated to clubs were also allowed to take part, but nobody was allowed to win more than one prize!

Four- to 11-year-olds are invited to create a 3D picture of one of these bikes at a craft session at Woodford Green Library on 31 May from 2.30pm to 3.30pm (free; booking required). ith ‘Dig for Victory’ still a very tangible war effort, horticultural and allotment societies were bursting at the seams, putting on local shows and enjoying a thriving artistic section of flower arrangements. The Sir James Hawkey Hall in Woodford Green was packed with people, produce and flowers.

Local ladies formed our flower club in 1954, initially using The Ballroom at the Majestic cinema (now the Odeon) and then Woodford County High School For Girls. Now, we meet at Wanstead Library. Sixteen chairmen later, we are still following the outlines of the National Association of Flower Arrangers (NAFAS). We have national and area flower shows, and our members decorate church flower festivals and places like Hylands House in

Chelmsford and Ingatestone Hall, as well as competing at RHS Chelsea Flower Shows and enjoying flower holidays. We educate through our society magazine The Flower Arranger to help understand the cultivation and arrangement of flowers.

I joined the Woodford and District Floral Arrangement Group upon finishing floristry courses at Capel Manor College in Enfield. Having worked for flower shops and events florists, I wanted to experience all aspects of the flower world.

We meet monthly for fun, friendship and flowers.

PHOTOGRAPHY BIOGRAPHY

I

retired in 2015 and decided, probably like many who retire, to take up a hobby.

I chose photography as I had plans to travel and wanted to capture special moments.

I had attended a photography workshop at the Gearies Learning Centre and had a chance to try out new things, such as experimenting with low-light photography, Adobe Lightroom and restoring old photos. As a result of these workshops, I realised I needed to use a DSLR camera, as I could see the amazing results achieved by other members of the workshop. I also attended a couple of other short courses about photography, but didn’t have time to put into practice what I had learnt, so as a result, used compact cameras. I bought the Panasonic LUMIX TZ 70, which has a zoom of 30x and a viewfinder – ideal for travelling.

In the 17th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Sue Rosner explains how a frozen shoulder forced her to rethink the equipment she uses in Norway with this camera.

However, I realised its limitations and felt ready to move on to a DSLR. I got a Canon EOS 750D for my trip to India and this kick-started my learning curve. It has given me the opportunity to view the world differently, to see how light changes the look of things and the importance of composition, and it has encouraged me to go into London to explore different events. I have also explored the use of post-production techniques to enhance my work.

Unfortunately, I developed a frozen shoulder in 2017 and had to rethink how I was going to continue my hobby. I moved to a mirrorless camera, the Sony A6000, which is much lighter to carry. One of the members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society (WWPS) regularly produced winning images in competitions with the

same camera. They say, however, that the best camera is the one you have with you and I have got some great shots with my iPhone and have attended workshops at the Apple store.

Spurred on by the success of the Wanstead Playground Association, we quickly started fundraising. First, we applied for Tesco’s Bags for Life funding, and thanks to the help of the local community, won the top award of £12,000. Following this, we successfully won awards from both Waitrose and Aviva. We held a quiz night, raffle and Christmas bag-packing event and also launched a crowdfunding page.

In the autumn of 2017, we were successful in being allocated an award from funds raised by the Community Infrastructure Levy (a council planning charge).

Our main aim for the park was to rectify the drainage system and improve the surfacing for the playground to be accessible all year round. Planning the rest of the project was a lot trickier.

We had both budget and space constraints. In the end, we decided to keep the best of the existing equipment – repairing and repainting what we could and replacing broken and old equipment with new.

Phase one began in February 2018, just as the Beast from the East decided to pay us a visit!

Despite the inclement weather, we managed to complete the work within three weeks, including a new surface, new baby swings (to replace the old), a new see-saw, tandem swing (to replace the old tyre swing), a variety of play panels, new graphics and an update of the nature trail.

Phase two, which began midApril, includes the repainting of existing equipment and the replacement of the old monkeybar unit with updated climbing apparatus. A new surprise piece of equipment has also been installed: a zip wire!

Throughout this journey, we have been overwhelmed by the amount of support the local community has shown us and we would like to thank everyone who has in any way helped make our vision a reality.

“I

can’t even draw a straight line!” is a plaintive cry often heard when we tell people about our drawing days at St Mary’s Church. Children, of course, come along and just get on with it and don’t fear criticism, whereas adults are much more guarded in their approach and tend to hold back. But many adults who arrive looking cautious and happy to stand back and observe usually end up enthusiastically joining in.

Yes, drawing is a skill that takes time to develop, but drawing can also be fun because you can make it whatever you want it to be and create whatever you wish. There are many ways to enjoy drawing that do not depend on aiming to complete fine, figurative images that look like they have been produced by a master like Leonardo da Vinci.

What is traditionally considered a ‘good’ drawing is often a drawing that looks like the object in front of you. But drawing is a wonderfully expressive tool and there are many ways of responding to the world around you and give free reign to your imagination. Ultimately, what makes a drawing good is that you learnt something from it and, as any teacher will tell you, learning usually happens through trying new things and making mistakes.

Drawing can be about the sheer sensual pleasure in using media to make creative marks on paper, with all the emotional qualities they can evoke. You can draw with paint, draw through abstraction, draw cartoons and caricatures and more besides. Rough sketches and even casual doodles can become delightfully expressive works. The list of possible approaches is endless because creativity is boundless.

Many will be surprised at the exciting results they produce…

Drawings don’t have to be complicated to be effective: less is more and sometimes a few carefully placed lines or marks on the paper is all that is required to create an interesting visual experience. The secret to enjoying drawing is to be playful and experimental.

It will be a chance for people of all ages to discover the sheer sensual pleasure in using media to make creative marks on paper, says Mark Lewis

autumn as part of the annual Big Draw programme and occasionally running family Saturday workshops at other times during the year. We have always valued and supported the visual arts and try to do our bit to reach out to the local community and encourage people to get creative. However, this year we are running a day in summer in the hope that good weather will prevail and we can do things out in the churchyard, not least to stimulate the curiosity of passers-by.

The day will have a summer theme and there will be three or four experienced artists present, demonstrating different techniques at regular intervals. Look out for the popular technique of ‘drawing with mono-printing’, which always gets people excited.

Whatever technique is tried, we aim to encourage our visitors to experiment in a relaxed and playful atmosphere; many will be surprised at the exciting results they produce. If we can inspire people to go on and further their creativity, then that is a bonus.

So, who can attend? The day is for all ages and open to the whole community and families are especially welcome. No previous experience is required.

There is no charge for attending and all materials will be supplied, but a small donation to help cover costs is always welcome.

Light refreshments will also be available. Drop in at any time during the day and you will be assured of a warm welcome.

John Russell has been managing the South Woodford Oxfam shop for a decade. Aside from the generous donations from the local community and M&S, John attributes the branch’s success to his team of muchvalued volunteers

have managed the South Woodford Oxfam shop for 10 years. This branch has been at 151 High Road for over 40 years and is doing exceptionally well at the moment.

Our continuing success is largely due to our loyal customer base, some of whom visit almost daily to seek out the latest bargains from among the generous donations we receive from the local community. We also benefit from wonderful regular donations of new stock, including baby clothes, school uniforms, shirts, jeans, underwear and much more from Marks & Spencer, which has supported Oxfam for a number of years.

It is a pleasure to welcome people from the local area, and those further afield The backbone of this busy shop is the team of almost 40 volunteers who help to run it for a day or half a day each week, depending on their availability. These volunteers are a very diverse group and some have been at Oxfam South Woodford for many years.

They include men and women from all walks of life, retired

individuals with experience to 14-year-olds, some of whom are on the Duke of Edinburgh Youth Awards programme, British and international university students on a break and people between jobs. The diverse ethnicity of the population is reflected in the diversity of our volunteers.

Many people assume Oxfam is only in the business of assistance after a natural disaster but this is far from the truth. Apart from many ongoing charitable projects in Africa and the Middle East, Oxfam has a big presence in Britain, tackling poverty. One in five people in the UK today are struggling to put food on the table and heat their homes.

More than half a million people had to rely on food banks to feed themselves and their families in the past year alone. Oxfam won’t live with the injustice of poverty,

whatever it looks like, wherever it exists, and that includes poverty in our own backyard.

In my capacity as the shop’s manager, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the current volunteers. It is a pleasure to welcome people from the local area and those who live further afield. I am certain many more exceptional individuals will join in our efforts to raise more for those in need.

With my many years of experience, I have come to realise the help we give is not only beneficial to the people receiving aid from Oxfam but sometimes to the volunteers themselves.

Volunteering promotes a positive outlook on life and the opportunity to meet friendly and supportive people. It can be especially helpful for younger people to gain the confidence and social skills that will stay with them throughout their life.

The experience I continue to have with Oxfam is something I am immeasurably proud of and is an achievement in my professional life.

I would encourage those who wish to do something interesting or different to volunteer with us.

You will certainly be made most welcome as a member of our ‘Oxfamily’.

he government is continuing to enforce regulation within the privately rented property sector. As of April, there is now a requirement for any properties rented out in the private sector to have a minimum energy performance rating of E on an Energy Performance Certificate.

The regulatory burden on landlords has become significantly more onerous The regulations came into force for new lets and tenancies with effect from 1 April 2018 and for all existing tenancies from 1 April 2020. It will be unlawful to rent a property that breaches the requirement for a minimum E rating unless there is an applicable exemption. A civil penalty of up to £4,000 will be imposed for breaches. For most landlords, this will mean they will no longer be able to rent out a property with a rating of F or G. There are now estimated to be as many as two million private landlords in the UK renting out 22% of all homes – a huge increase on the 9% of homes in the private rental sector 30 years ago. With the sector becoming increasingly strictly regulated, more and more landlords are falling foul of the regulations and substantial fines are becoming commonplace. It is essential that anyone deciding to become a landlord appreciates the extent to which they will be subject to scrutiny by the local authority, and to the full force of the

criminal law for any breaches.

The local magistrate’s courts, and increasingly the crown courts, deal regularly with large numbers of landlords subject to prosecution for a wide range of offences.

The law makes no distinction between a professional and amateur landlord. Every landlord is, by definition, running a business and is expected to adhere to the strict professional standards required of such. Fines are therefore generally imposed at the higher level typical of commercial prosecutions.

What is becoming clear is that the days of the amateur landlord are numbered. None of the rules recently introduced are, in themselves, earth-shattering. For the most part, they involve things that landlords should be or ought to be doing already. However, there are now so many of these rules that, taken together, the regulatory burden on landlords and their agents has become significantly more onerous.

Complying with the new regulations will involve setting up strict procedures to be followed when renting out a property. Landlords and agents will need to make sure not only that things are done at the proper time but that they will be able to prove they were done.

f you’re a lady who enjoys singing and a sociable evening out, then you’d be very welcome to come along to meet Ultrasound Female Choir on any Tuesday at the Woodford Methodist Church on Derby Road, South Woodford.

We’re a very friendly and supportive group of women of all ages and happy to welcome new members at any time. You don’t have to be able to read music, but it’s handy if you can sing in tune!

Local singing teacher Lisa Tsindides formed the choir five years ago, and with around 40 members, the group’s always looking to expand and take on new performance challenges.

We’ve sung at fetes, festivals and fayres, supermarkets, cafés, stations, studio theatres and

MYTH

W

e may not always appreciate the profound way in which certain early life experiences continue to shape who we become.

For example, although too young at the time to have memories of the Second World War, I suffered for many years when a child from a recurring nightmare: I would be walking down stairs and go to take the next step only to fall into black, empty space and be smothered by ‘Moaning Minnie’, the eerie-sounding siren that warned of approaching air raids. Probably related to this experience of anxiety, my earliest childhood memory is of feeling safe, hugging my knees in a pre-natal position inside a small, partially open kitchen cupboard.

I began making sculpture as a way of creatively exploring my own thoughts and feelings…

Other significant experiences while growing up would be the sudden death of my father when I was 10; at 11, experiencing an inexplicable and overwhelming awareness that I and the external world were one; at 12, emigrating with my mother and sister to Tasmania (a year in which I attended five different schools); leaving secondary school at 15 to work for nine years as a factory wool sorter and attending night school in my early 20s to gain mature-age entry to university.

Six years at university was a further period of considerable personal and intellectual change.

In 1972, having completed postgraduate training, I returned

involves facing difficulties, dead ends, discomfort and darkness before finding a new form of being or ‘rebirth’. One well-known example is the popular tale of Jonah and the Whale.

It is common today to think the word myth simply refers to ancient stories of gods and heroes, stories that are entertaining but completely unreal. However, myths are actually an imaginative attempt at more fully describing reality.

For example, over 30,000 years ago, the carving from mammoth bone of a man with a lion’s head was a depiction of something real that the sculptor thought and felt (or intuited) about the

world and wanted to express and share with others. While we cannot be absolutely certain of the artist’s full intention in making the lion man, it seems likely it symbolised oneness or the union of opposites – in this case, the oneness of human beings and animals. Similar images and themes are found in world mythology. For example, the Roman god Janus, with his two opposed faces, stood for seeing the end and beginning of various states of being: the old and new year, the end and beginning of one month and the next and so on. His image was commonly set in doorways as the gatekeeper, fusing both external and internal worlds.

As my interest in personal change developed, I began making sculpture as a way of creatively exploring my own

thoughts and feelings about these themes. My first major project was The Myth of Being, a creation myth consisting of a circle of stone figures that gradually divide and evolve within an ever-changing cycle of oneness. It is no doubt significant that in making the circle, the starting point was a seated, child-like figure hugging its knees.

Over the years, I have used various media to illustrate and extend the themes described – clay, plaster, wood, cold cast bronze, photo collage and performance art – yet have always found myself drawn back to direct carving in stone. A selection of sculpture and other artworks – some 45 years of work – will be on display in my studio and garden during the Woodford Festival in October.

his May, I have the opportunity to present a selection of my threedimensional photographs at Woodford Green Library. As a collector, I have around 3,000 stereographs (3D photographs) from the 19th and 20th centuries, along with a number of special image viewers, including the Viewmaster.

The stereograph is a masterful art, one that captures history…

The stereographs range in subject matter widely, from the First World War to travel and wildlife. In all cases, the images create the illusion of depth by presenting the viewer with two 2D photographs taken from different angles at the same time. These images are then combined in the brain to give the

perception of depth in much the same way as our own vision.

It was an expensive process and therefore only for the select few.

Indeed, it is a limited experience today, despite even David Attenborough’s best efforts.

The stereograph is a masterful art, one that captured a period of history no written word could replace and no science can reproduce. The depth created by the viewing devices and the quality of the photographs give the images an immersive character.

On this occasion, the public will have the unique experience of viewing my stereographs depicting 1960s London and Bermuda. The images will be combined with some special effects from our more recent scientific developments and

accompanied by Swinging Sixties tunes. Viewers will be free to share their impressions of the era as they enjoy a cuppa and slice of cake.

I

was one of many black Britons inspired by Alex Haley’s Pulitzer Prizewinning Roots. I made a promise that, one day, I too would find my ‘Kunte Kinte’ (the enslaved African given a new name that was passed down through generations).

Much of my young adult life was spent searching public records for my ancestors enslaved in the Caribbean.

Tracing African-Caribbean slave ancestors was thought to be mission impossible – certainly when I embarked on my quest, 30 years ago. “No one had ever tried because public records didn’t exist,” I was told. Back then, no one appreciated the extent to which public records could be used to help people like me trace their family tree.

I see family history as a means of increasing self-respect…

My search would lead me from suburban north London to Jamaica and ultimately, back 200 years to the Gold Coast of Africa.

I discovered all the key archives and repositories and eventually, the name of my great-greatgreat-great-grandmother Ami Djaba, born in 1777.

Paul Crooks is a genealogist and author with a special interest in AfricanCaribbean ancestry. Ahead of a talk at South Woodford Library this May, he tells the story behind researching his enslaved African forebears But my exploration became more than a paperchase back in time. As my family tree grew, so did my curiosity. Yet more questions. What was life like for my forebears held in bondage?

Why were documents created bearing their names? How can knowledge of the past help me understand the condition I find myself in? How can all this be used to help me shape my future? These questions burned within me like an all-consuming fire. Every new discovery fired my determination to piece together my family story. Unexpectedly, I rediscovered hidden truths about slavery and abolition within British colonies. This prompted me to write my novel Ancestors.

Ancestors tells the story of two of my enslaved African forebears, their part in events to end British slavery and the hope and faith that sustained

them. Acclaim for Ancestors was followed by a yearning among people, particularly with African-Caribbean descent in the UK, to do likewise and explore their own ancestry. My publisher asked me to write another book, this time answering a number of unanswered questions about how to start tracing back and where to go to find information.

My second book, A Tree Without Roots, is a guide to tracing British, African and Asian-Caribbean ancestry. It revealed for the first time the sources of information important to tracing black genealogy. A Tree Without Roots preceded a rush to know more about the historical value of the slave registers and slave compensation records.

A study by Emory University found that people – specifically teenagers – who know their family histories are more likely to show higher levels of social and emotional health. It’s why I am often invited to deliver talks and workshops in secondary schools and in partnership with community-based organisations.

I see family history as a means of increasing the self-respect of black and British people, young and old, giving them a brighter, more optimistic outlook. It’s also about helping people from other cultural backgrounds to view the African contribution to British and world history through a more appreciative lens.

or over 100 years, the Women’s Institute (WI) has played a pivotal role in the lives of thousands of women across the UK. The WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK.

We aim to help each other through all our ups and downs while having fun…

Many people think of the WI as all jam and Jerusalem, but for me, it’s more about bringing together local women to achieve great things.

On 19 March, around 40 local women officially formed the Woodford Willows, the newest branch of the WI at St Mary’s Church Memorial Hall.

The British WI movement was formed in 1915 in Wales to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then, the organisation’s aims have broadened.

The WI celebrated its centenary in 2015 and currently has almost 220,000 members in approximately 6,300 groups. The organisation welcomes women of all ages and backgrounds and plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

“It first occurred to us to start a Woodford branch of the WI when we were running our tea shop, Time for Tea, in Snaresbrook.

At times, the shop had such a lovely community feel, full of people chatting to each other and enjoying each other’s company. However, there were also some women who had found themselves lonely in life for one reason or another and had commented that they had been comforted by coming to us and even called us a lifeline.

Hopefully, we can recreate this community vibe through our WI meetings,” said fellow founding member Deborah Roper.

We are a bunch of fun-loving women with a strong community ethos, committed to ensure an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. We are really looking forward to forming a group of women made up of a diverse and unique nature from all walks of life. We aim to help and motivate each other through all our ups and downs while having fun and learning from each other.

The Woodford Willows is a community-led initiative and we welcome all local women to get involved.

Our monthly meetings will host guest speakers covering a wide range of topics and demonstrating new skills for all to learn. We will also endeavour to support local charities.

We look forward to meeting you.

y siblings and I regularly visited Harold until his death at the age of 102. Technically, he was our stepfather, but as he married our mother when they were both 82, he was more of a guardian angel really: just when many of our friends were concerned about ageing parents, we knew he was devotedly at her side, probably holding her hand, except when he needed to turn the pages of the Financial Times in his search for another long-term investment, or possibly to plot their next cruise. Her knitting suffered rather. That had to wait till he nodded off.

They were very happy together for 15 years; Mother died young, at 98. On one visit to Harold, another resident at his care home, Arnold, trundled in on his wheelchair and announced: “D’you know what? I’ve lost my memory. Can’t remember anything! Absolutely not a thing!”

My memories of George Lane go back to the levelcrossing at the station…

He was beaming, buoyant, triumphant even. We all beamed back. “Don’t you know what you had for lunch?” I asked. “No idea!”

“I can tell you it was sausages.”

(Harold had been finishing his as we arrived.) There was something beguiling about the man: his evident happiness, as if his cup was even more than half full. No memories, but no regrets. He was living 100% in the present.

I love seeing old couples walking down George Lane holding hands. Like I did yesterday.

(See them, I mean. No-one was holding my hand). There they were, pausing at the International Supermarket, grateful, as we all are, for the indulgent labelling in pounds and kilograms and intrigued by some of the produce. “What’s that, d’you reckon, a fruit or a vegetable?” asked the man.

“Must be a vegetable; it’s between the peppers and the tomatoes.” A rather insightful response, I thought. I was in there recently looking for an ingredient for a Middle Eastern dish called tabbouleh. I wanted to surprise a vegetarian friend with something a bit different and had found this recipe in

my copy of The 30-Minute Vegetarian, purchased at the Children’s Society Shop. The main ingredient was bulgar wheat. I pored over the packet. Of course, an added benefit of the shop is the presence of shedloads of Middle Eastern expertise. A voice from behind me in the queue: “Don’t take any notice of what it says on the packet. You just pour on boiling water and wait.”

The recipe also required ‘large bunches of mint and broadleafed parsley’, something else in abundant supply there amongst many herbs I’d never heard of before.

My memories of George Lane go back to the level-crossing at the station, before we were ‘electrified’. And the two large draper’s shops, Herbert Gedge

on Electric Parade and Hedges down by the station, where Red Mantra is now. I used to get them muddled up with such similar names. Sara Dixon’s article, quoted on the web, recalls that Herbert Gedge ‘periodically displayed large, eye-catching advertisements for Twilfit ladies’ corsetry’. I rather wish I could remember them; they sound like fun. But I do remember the trolley bus turning point outside the Napier Arms (now the Lokkum Bar). And dear Liddles, the grocer’s shop with its elegant Georgian bay windows (now Finance and Leasing). And the United Dairies at the bottom of Grove Hill. I popped in there after school one day when I was about eight, looking for something sweet. They had a small china plate of ‘Iced Fancies’ on the counter, marked down to a halfpenny. I picked one up.

“Are these still good to eat?”

“Certainly.” Then, carelessly, I went and dropped it back. The plate shattered! More recently, many of us mourned the death of Woolworths. There really should have been a proper funeral and wake, where we could share experiences of browsing and buying, and shed tears together ‘to bring some sort of closure’ as the saying goes now.

Memory is a very precious gift and we grieve a little when we can’t put a name to a face or summon up the title of a book we were just about to recommend. This is reassuringly identified by those in the know as a normal part of the ageing process. So, let’s grin and bear it and reserve our deeper sadness for those who find their memories trickling away completely. Though Arnold’s lot gave the appearance of being a very happy one, I hope earnestly to be more like Harold, vividly remembering and relishing (and sometimes weeping over) the relationships that made up his long and loving life.

y 1906, club membership had increased to 104, and five members of the club had received the FRPS distinction from the Royal Photographic Society.

At the Annual General Meeting in 1906, a member suggested that marks should be awarded at the society’s monthly lantern slide competitions, with a certificate or other reward to go to the member with the highest number of points at the end of the year. This idea was rejected, the prevailing opinion being that competition was not necessary as an incentive to improvement.

In the third of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary year, club member Alan Simpson offers some insight into the group’s history, which in turn provides a pictorial record of our changing surroundings Fund and raised the sum of £8 6s 6d. The activities of the club were reduced at this time because of the First World War. Although meetings continued for a time, and the sparse accounts show membership subscriptions and affiliation fees for 1917, 1918 and 1919, there do not appear to have been any formal meetings

In 1927, Miss Norah Cross was the first woman to be elected as president for the year In 1911, Ilford Photographic Society invited Woodford to join in a competition with about 20 other local clubs, but the records do not indicate whether Woodford accepted. The society evidently enjoyed varied social activities at this time. A programme dated January 1912 shows the club held a whist drive and musical evening with entertainment provided by members and their families after an interval for refreshments.

At other times, the minutes make references to summer activities, such as rambles and coach outings, with a prize being offered for the best print of a photograph taken on these excursions.

In October 1914, William Wastell organised a public showing of slides in aid of the Belgian Relief

between the AGMs in 1917 and 1919. Meetings resumed on 16 November 1919, held at the Wilfrid Lawson Hotel, but from January 1920 the society moved to the Woodford Memorial Hall.

The postponed 21st annual exhibition was held in April 1921 and, because of post-war difficulties, the society decided not to have an exhibition catalogue. At this exhibition, the names of 16 new exhibitors appear as well as the names of older members.

During its first 25 years, the society had achieved many of its objectives. There had been great changes and developments in materials and techniques, and members had kept abreast of these developments by trial and error, achieving success in competitions and producing a

survey of Woodford, which was of historical interest. The First World War broke the sequence and created a shortage of materials, but as the society was able to stage the exhibition in 1921, it is clear the pre-war impetus had survived.

The programme continued in a similar way to the pre-war programme with lectures and demonstrations. For example, in November 1922, Bernard Cook, a member and City of London verderer, gave a historical and pictorial demonstration on Epping Forest, illuminated by autochrome slides. There were 32 members and 20 visitors present at that meeting.

There were also changes made at this time. At the 23rd annual exhibition in 1923, awards were made to preliminary members for the first time. This exhibition received a 33-inch report in The Woodford Times. The attitude to competition had evidently changed since 1906, when the idea of having competitions was rejected, for another innovation was the arrangement of a print

competition in October 1926, with judging by popular vote.

In 1922, the society agreed to admit ladies to membership and Miss GE Powers became the first lady member. But the society was slow to recognise the existence of female members. In the programme for 1924–1925, some of the meetings have an asterisk beside them and there is a note at the bottom which says: “These lectures are illustrated with lantern slides and are suitable evenings on which members might bring their lady friends.”

A few years later, in 1927, Norah Cross was the first woman to be elected as president for the year.

A History of Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society was originally written in 1968 by George Hunt and updated in 2002 by Gillian Hutchinson. Alan Simpson has again updated the text for the group’s 125th anniversary. Visit swvg.co/wwps
