Useful numbers in and around South Woodford…

There are two words I try hard not to overuse in this column and in this publication: ‘local’ and ‘community’.

I have to try hard because those two words – which combine seamlessly to form a perfect descriptor for so many elements of a… local community magazine – are all too easily devalued when used too liberally. Like a mischievous child saying sorry time and time again or newly-weds continually declaring their love, the power of certain words can decline with repeated use. In order to convey sincerity, we must choose our words carefully.

But this issue is different. With local council elections on the horizon, we have given over a substantial chunk of editorial space to those members of the community who are asking for your vote on 3 May. And when it comes to local election candidates seeking support from members of the local community, it’s hard – nigh on impossible – to cap the local community lexeme. In our last issue, a quick word count tells me ‘local’ occurred 74 times, ‘community’ 35 times and ‘local community’ twice. That’s a fairly average tally, kept under control by careful proofreading and judicious use of a thesaurus. Not so this time around, with the count rising to 149, 52 and 14 respectively. Our prospective councillors clearly like to talk about community issues, and local ones at that.

So, if national and international politics are testing your levels of engagement, take a look at the issues closer to home and say the two magic words: local community. Join the celebration of the true meaning of ‘local’, the true meaning of ‘community’ and the even more powerful meaning that is derived from uniting the two.

TfL agree to keep W12 service under review as petition shows ‘strength of local opinion’

A campaign backing the reinstatement of the W12 bus service – which links South Woodford with Whipps Cross Hospital – to three times an hour has received over 3,000 signatures. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support, which shows what an impact the change is having… It certainly shows the strength of local opinion on this,” said Jo Blackman, who started the petition following TfL’s decision to reduce the timetable to twice an hour in December.

In February, the petition was delivered to City Hall.

Claire Mann, director of bus operations at TfL, said: “We are constantly reviewing our bus network to ensure we provide the best possible service. We have changed the frequency of the W12 bus route between Walthamstow and Wanstead to meet passenger demand, which has fallen recently along this route. We understand the concerns raised locally and will continue to keep this under review.”

Free garden waste collection service resumes

Redbridge Council’s fortnightly free garden waste collection service will resume from 5 March.

“Not everyone will receive their new bag before 5 March, but that’s fine as gardeners are free to use their old woven bags…

You can also use plastic bags – please keep them untied and open with the garden waste content visible. We thank you for your patience and will make every effort to deliver your bag as soon as possible,” said a council spokesperson. It follows last year’s trial of a paid-for service.

A petition to stop a high-rise development at 142–146 High Road, South Woodford was delivered to Redbridge Council in February. The site – which was vacated by Waltham Forest Fencing in December – has been subject to planning applications for residential developments of up to six storeys. Concerns have been expressed that, if approved, such development will set a precedent for larger buildings in the area. Residents adjacent to the site are also worried about overshadowing.

Rising costs and increased competition have been cited as reasons for the closure of Needhams Florist. “I knew from the start how hard having my own business would be, but I loved it. I loved the buzz. Early mornings, late nights and taking on work that I have only ever dreamed of. But all the hard work wasn’t enough. The decision to close has not come easy, but the rising costs of maintaining the business together with growing competition from supermarkets in South Woodford has meant it is no longer viable to keep trading,” said Kate Thomas, who bought the George Lane shop in December 2013. “We would like to thank everyone for their loyalty over the years.”

Kate will continue to work as a florist from home, focusing on weddings, funerals and events.

Dockless bikes available in South Woodford A preview of the bikes outside Wanstead station

A dockless bike scheme has been launched in Redbridge, which includes allocated parking zones at South Woodford and Snaresbrook Tube stations.

“The easy-to-use scheme is the first of its kind in the borough with the council choosing two providers, Urbo and ofo, to run the service,” said a Redbridge Council spokesperson. A points system will encourage cyclists to park in the dockless zones, but the GPS-enabled bikes can be left at any responsible location within Redbridge. Dockless bike sharing works by using an app on a smartphone to choose a bike from a map location, or by going directly to a bike and scanning a QR code. The app then releases a lock on the back wheel. When the user finishes their journey, they click the lock back into place, leaving the bike ready for another user. Visit swvg.co/bikes

Call for CCTV on footbridge over Central Line

A South Woodford child psychotherapist will be hosting a free webinar this March to help parents learn how to talk so their children listen. “I am passionate about supporting parents in addressing the pain points in their relationships with their children, which when identified and worked on, helps them and their children lead happier, more peaceful lives. We all want our children to be happy – let me help you on your journey,” said Usha Chudasama, who published her first book, Your Happy Child, last year. Born in Kenya, Usha came to London in the 1970s and has 12 years of experience as a teacher and six years as a behaviour consultant. Fact and fiction: local resident publishes novel

Following research into women who were hanged in Holloway Prison – including the Finchley baby murderers and Amelia Dyer – a South Woodford resident has published her debut novel.

The Ogress of Reading mixes fact and fiction to tell the story of a woman’s sadness at giving up her child and one policeman’s efforts to bring a baby killer to justice. “I was born in Dublin and moved to London when I was six, and this experience has shaped the stories I tell,” said Eithne Cullen.

“Everyone has heard of Jack the Ripper, who killed five women.

Amelia Dyer [1836–1897], the Ogress of Reading, confessed to taking over 300 lives. She was a baby farmer and murderer in a society where unmarried women were shamed by pregnancy and the lives of their babies were not valued.” Eithne’s book is available from Amazon. Visit swvg.co/ogr

If you know who Liverpool lost to in the 1988 FA Cup Final, or the Greek name for Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, then you would have been fully engaged at the South Woodford Society’s popular annual quiz in January.

Snaresbrook station – which facilitates 2.69m journeys a year – has been announced as one of the next Tube stations to be made step-free by spring 2022. “I’m delighted that TfL has acted on our calls to increase the number of stations with step-free access in Redbridge,” said Councillor Jas Athwal, leader of Redbridge Council. Snaresbrook will be the third Central Line station in the borough to have access improved, joining Newbury Park and South Woodford.

The South Woodford Society is liaising with local councillors to petition for the installation of CCTV cameras on the bridge that connects Marlborough Road and Pulteney Road in South Woodford. “The footbridge over the Central Line tracks has long been a cause for concern.

It represents a very useful cutthrough from Hermon Hill to George Lane and is used on a regular basis by pedestrians,” said Matthew Shaw, who believes the route is too intimidating to use between dusk and dawn. “The broken glass and nitrous oxide bottles visible in the day indicate the anti-social behaviour that occurs on the bridge by night…

Even more worrying is that the bridge goes through phases of being used by drug dealers, and has also been used as an escape route for criminals undertaking burglaries in George Lane.”

Local fitness club presents cheque to riding centre

A local slimming and fitness club has presented a cheque for more than £4,000 to the Chigwell Riding Trust For Special Needs.

Members of Fitgirlslim – which offers classes in Woodford and surrounding areas – took part in fundraising events throughout 2017 to generate the cash. “It was a very busy year organising so many charity events, but we had a lot of fun,” said South Woodford resident Karen Smith, who runs the club. “Since adopting the Chigwell Riding Trust as our chosen charity for 2017, some of our class members now regularly volunteer there. It is a wonderful local charity that desperately needs funds to continue its amazing work.” Established over 50 years ago, the centre on Grange Farm Lane, Chigwell is one of the leading specialised riding centres in the country, hosting 160 riders each week.

Kingfishers and kestrels: local RSPB guided walk

A Woodford Green resident is urging others to help fight the growing rat population in the borough. “The reason more rats are being seen is food in the form of litter… I have noticed bread and other food left around ponds, which encourages rats,” said Helen Phillips, who would like the bins located next to seats to be removed and replaced by signs advising people to take their waste home. “Scientists have proved it was not rats but human beings who spread the plague,” commented Helen.

The RSPB will be leading a guided walk through the Roding Valley on 18 March. “We’ll include a visit to the nature-friendly Redbridge Lakes… We know the area is frequented by kestrels looking for voles as well as great spotted woodpeckers drumming on trees… If we’re lucky, we may see a kingfisher on the river,” said David Littlejohns of the North East London RSPB Local Group.

Breast cancer awareness sessions at local libraries

Parents with children destined for the stage or screen are invited to take part in an acting workshop at South Woodford Library. “There will be lots of family acting games and children will get a chance to strut their inner actor! Local residents are invited to learn more about breast cancer and other health conditions at awareness sessions at local libraries this March. “These interactive sessions are delivered by our team of Health and Wellbeing Buddies,” said a spokesperson for Redbridge CVS, which is hosting the free events in South Woodford (7 March, 4pm to 5.30pm) and Woodford Green (27 March, 4pm to 6pm).

Those interested in taking up lawn bowls have two local clubs ready to welcome them to the green and offer tuition this spring. South Woodford Bowling Club – which is located within Elmhurst Gardens, off Gordon Road – will be starting the new outdoor bowls season with a members’ bowls drive on 28 April from 2.30pm, to which spectators are welcome (free). Keeping the flag flying Ahead of the annual Easter Egg hunt in Elmhurst Gardens, Kathie Teahan explains why the Friends of Elmhurst Gardens need help to ensure the local park retains its Green Flag status

lmhurst Gardens, the park off Gordon Road in the Maybank area of South Woodford, needs some TLC. We need more friends in our park.

Vision RCL, which runs the parks in Redbridge, has launched the Our Parks scheme, which encourages residents to take more opportunities to get fit and active in parks and open spaces, giving them the chance to enjoy their local area and embrace what their park has to offer. You love your park, don’t you? The playground, the dog walking, the picnics and all the flowers.

Our Parks scheme aims to take the actions needed to bring and build stronger and more

sustainable communities together, promoting a healthy borough, which is proud of its parks and open spaces by encouraging maintenance of these spaces. By volunteering in Elmhurst Gardens, you can share and learn many new skills, as well as meet local residents and other volunteers too.

In Elmhurst Gardens there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with many different activities, such as planting flowers, maintaining planted areas and hard surfaces, looking after spring and summer bedding and litter removal.

Vision RCL will provide the training and equipment required to improve and keep the gardens how they should be.

The Friends of Elmhurst Gardens would welcome your ideas and comments, but most of all, your help.

We are also hosting our Easter Egg hunt on 25 March. The event is held annually in the park for the children of the Maybank community. As well as the egg hunt, there will be Easter quizzes with eggs donated by local supermarkets for prizes.

The Easter Bunny will be there to hand out the eggs and an ice cream van will be nearby for an extra treat.

NCT Redbridge and District Branch committee members outline the services they provide to support and guide new parents, and encourage others to join them in their rewarding work

e are the Redbridge and District NCT, your local branch of the National Childbirth Trust charity. Just like branches all around the country, we are run entirely by volunteers – all members of local communities.

We are now working to launch groups in additional towns…

Our famous nearly new sale runs twice a year in Wanstead. It is a great opportunity for people to find new homes for pre-loved baby, toddler and children’s items that are still in excellent condition but no longer needed.

Our sales are hugely popular events and everyone seems to bag a bargain. We also run coffee mornings in Wanstead, South Woodford, Buckhurst Hill and Barkingside. These are hosted by local parents who are interested in making new friends and having a network of support.

We have young families and most of us also juggle working or studying in addition to our volunteering. We seem to be able to find time for it, united by our passion and enthusiasm for NCT and the work of the charity in reaching and supporting new parents. We have 10 committee members and we all take on different roles, from coordinating the branch, managing the accounts, setting up ‘bumps and babies’ events, hosting coffee mornings and running our gold standard nearly new sales. Many of the roles offer good CV skills, and for some volunteers, they have been a lifeline in getting back into work after having children. Each role comes with its own challenges but we have formed friendships, learnt new skills and continue to provide support to new parents in the local area. All of this combined is what makes volunteering with the NCT such an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Photography biography

I

first discovered my love for photography in my early teens and my first wage packet went towards a deposit on a SLR camera, some 35 years ago.

In the 16th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Darren Cottrell discusses his interest in urban exploration and photo manipulation Northamptonshire. After joining and establishing some new friendships I managed to obtain a copy of Adobe Photoshop 7, which, until recently, I have stopped using and upgraded, however, that’s where my troubles began. You simply never stop learning and that’s the fun part.

Normal family life intervened and one Christmas I received a fairly basic digital camera, which instantly rekindled my love affair.

My interests in what I photograph have changed over the years and today my main subjects are landscapes, people and fantasy art. This has been a natural progression and I used to be a keen urbexer (urban exploration), which is basically exploring and photographing derelict man-made structures and buildings. This is increasingly difficult to do due to health and safety rules making such buildings more and more secure.

While photographing derelict buildings I found the images lacked a human connection, so started to take along some props,

Personally, for me digital photography opened up an entirely new pastime and I get great pleasure from both capturing images and editing my pictures using image manipulation software such as Photoshop. I remember flicking through a photography magazine and thinking how on earth am I going to learn all these skills.

A friend recommended joining my local camera club, which at that time was in

this led to models and this has progressed to other aspects of my current work.

Over the last couple of years I developed a friendship with a local model from Epping. We

have worked together on a few projects, developing both our portfolios. He has since moved to Hastings with his girlfriend, but we still regularly shoot together and he features in much of my work.

moved to South Woodford in 2000 to begin nurse training at St Bartholomew School of Nursing and Midwifery. As a nurse, I am concerned with all aspects of how people’s health can be improved by good council policies related to the environment, transport and housing, and I believe in keeping services local.

Wanstead, Snaresbrook and South Woodford with Whipps Cross Hospital and ultimately Walthamstow.

I have campaigned against the closure of the Royal Mail Delivery Office, which has now been placed on temporary hold, and against the closure of Woodford Police Station. Thanks to a long-standing Liberal Democrat campaign, I am delighted that pedestrians and cyclists will now have a safer journey across Charlie Brown’s Roundabout. But there is more to be done and I am currently concerned about plans to reduce the bus service linking

have lived in Redbridge for over seven years, working for a Docklands education software company. Regularly commuting through South Woodford, I have become very familiar with the area, and, if elected, will support local residents, challenging the council on issues where they are failing the people of South Woodford.

Residents have made it very clear to me that litter is a big problem here. Whether dog fouling, broken glass, takeaway boxes or fly-tipping, the council have failed to get a grip on this issue. I have challenged them on this and hope they will take real action. People here are also concerned about speeding, air pollution outside schools, the general lack of school places, play areas and children’s centres, and the closure of our local police station.

An already overcrowded area does not require further high-rise developments. Any additional housing should be built with the consent of local residents, and must be genuinely affordable council housing.

Currently, the Labour Party has a small majority on the council.

It is likely that neither Labour nor the Conservatives will get a majority, so it is important you elect councillors who can hold the balance of power to get your views and concerns acted on. Let’s work together to make South Woodford a greener and more pleasant place to live, work and socialise in.

t one of the first meetings of the Woodford Photographic Society on 19 October 1893 (the Wanstead associations followed in later years), club president H Wilmer expressed the need for individual work and the hope that by cooperation and hard work, the club might take “an honoured place amongst the foremost societies”.

In the early years, a good practical programme was arranged with the burden of instruction, demonstration and general guidance falling upon the shoulders of the founders. In the second of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary year, club member Alan Simpson offers some insight into the group’s history, which in turn provides a pictorial record of our changing surroundings The club decided to become affiliated to the Royal Photographic Society from January 1895, and, in October, The Woodford Times published a report of the society’s success at the annual exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society.

In January 1895, F Elliott spoke on beginners’ difficulties and suggested that too many papers were read on the technical side of photography and not enough on the artistic side. Experienced members were asked to provide samples of their work with details of exposure, development and

toning, to set a standard of guidance for beginners.

Meetings of the Woodford Photographic Society were held at the Coffee Tavern until 1898, when the membership had risen to 41 and the society moved to the Wilfrid Lawson Temperance Hotel, near The Castle public house in Woodford.

The hotel was demolished in 1973 and a block of flats built on the site.

The society decided to amend its aims and objectives by adding that one of its purposes should be: “The discussion of the subjects connected with photography in a social manner and the encouragement of photographic research practice among the members by mutual and friendly assistance.”

During these early years, the leading members of the club bore the main responsibility of instructing and advising the younger members. For example, in January 1908, Mr Goodwin demonstrated the development of a colour slide. He first exposed a plate on a watercolour drawing for about 23 minutes, illuminated

In September 1899, Alfred Horsley Hinton, editor of Amateur Photographer magazine, became a member. He was chairman from 1902–1903, and Amateur Photographer reported the eighth Annual Exhibition of the society in 1902, saying: “There are probably few, if indeed any societies which, in proportion to its numbers, includes amongst its members so many who have made a name for themselves in some particular branch of photography.”

was born in Woodford, raised in Woodford and continue to live here. It was, and still is, a great place to grow up and live because of its village character, despite its close vicinity to London.

I was able to grow up and live in a nice, clean and safe area because of those before me who fought to keep it that way. It is our responsibility to ensure that this privilege is afforded to the current and next generation.

I was part of the first generation in my family to go to university, my subject being financial economics. I work for one of the Big Four accounting firms within data analytics, and have picked up expertise in areas of accounting, audit, financial regulation and data.

I have recently passed the level one exams for becoming

These skills are valuable at a local council level in terms of budgeting, corporate governance and responsibility.

The conservation area we live in provides a special quality of life and mental wellbeing for people in and around the area, a status that must be protected. A key thing I have learnt from these activities is that communities only win if we work together.

have lived in Redbridge since 1996 with my family, and my two daughters went to Oakdale and Wanstead High School.

I am passionate about supporting those in society who may be more vulnerable or have a greater need. Before I retired, I worked as the manager of housing and support services for the homeless and people with disabilities, including learning disabilities, for Redbridge and Waltham Forest councils. Currently, I run a local Sunday drop-in, feeding the homeless, and I also run sessions for Redbridge CVS as a health and wellbeing buddy, talking to community groups about health issues like breast cancer and TB. I actively campaign against NHS closures and on housing issues, like tackling slum landlords

and the need for more social housing for local people.

I am very concerned about the Tory cuts to the education budget, leading to a loss of teachers.

As a beekeeper, green issues are dear to my heart and I look forward to working with a Labour council to tackle flytipping and pollution and to manage traffic more effectively in Churchfields. If elected, I will work hard to ensure the council puts local residents’ needs at the forefront, taking your views on board.

I

t was just as well I woke up when I did this morning as I was eating a scone. It was large and golden-topped and crammed with cream and fresh, ripe, oozy strawberries.

And I swear I could still sense the fragrance of the fruit, the irresistible pinkness of it. I could still taste the crumblytextured cakiness, warm from the oven, heavy with recollections of holiday cream teas at sunny seaside resorts, as I reached over to check the time on my bedside clock and became aware of rain battering on the window and a wintry wind greeting the day.

It was quite probably guilt that woke me up. That’s dieting for you. Essential after the joyful over-indulgence of the Christmas and New Year season. You step onto the scales in the morning (and in the altogether), having checked that toenails are welltrimmed, and wait in dread for the moving finger on the dial to pronounce judgement. Rather reminiscent of the moment when you opened your (very old-style) school report to see if you “could do better” or were, hopefully, “making good progress”.

It was lunchtime, so all the other patrons were tucking into Welsh lamb…

Surprisingly enough, the very best and the very worst scones in my scone-scoffing career were both served to me in Wales.

Perhaps not so surprisingly given that ‘Welsh Cream Teas’ are

high on the list of top tourist attractions, second only to castles. The finest were in a tiny eatery in Newport (the Pembrokeshire one). It was lunchtime, so all the other patrons were tucking into Welsh lamb and roast parsnips.

But if you fancy a Welsh cream tea, why wait for teatime? The least good were in Llandudno, in every other respect a hugely impressive town with its vast sweep of elegant Victorian houses round the bay and its cable-hauled trams trundling you up to the top of the Great Orme, with coastal views to die for. But I’m not going to mention the name of the tea room. It must be challenging enough trying to make a living in the short summer season without disgruntled customers in far-distant South Woodford rubbishing their patisserie in print. One critical tweet could circle the globe and precipitate bankruptcy. Which would be very unfair (like so many more famous tweets), since probably it was just that their regular pastry cook was off sick that day. Or maybe visiting his grandma. By the way, before we drop scones, the chef at Packfords Hotel on

Snakes Lane West has definitely got the secret.

My mention of “the moving finger on the dial” will have given you a clue that I haven’t gone fully digital. I’ve even got a moving finger on my watch (why do we call it a hand?), though I’m just as likely to check digitally on my iPhone. In matters metric, I’m sadly only about C+, though I’m fairly OK with what a 100 metres looks like as a result of gazing entranced at the great Usain Bolt pounding over the line at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. (We were sitting only yards from him). I confess I can’t immediately reel off my weight in kilos or my height in centimetres. I’m not proud of this. Not ashamed either. The will to ‘convert’ is there, but the brain, still happy to produce the Co-op number I could reel off from the age of six or the phone numbers of my ‘best friends’ at

primary school, does seem to resist. I have taken practical steps on the ounces to grams front: I’ve requested a set of gram weights for my next birthday to save the bother of consulting my ancient Good Housekeeping Conversion booklet when tackling a modern recipe. With regard to measures of longer distance, I’ve mastered the “divide by eight and multiply by five” tactic for checking how far we have to go to Paris when just leaving Calais. But on this side of the Channel, if someone asks where I live, I am content to say it’s exactly one mile from Churchill’s statue in the South Woodford direction. (Easier than 1.60934 kilometres). Oh, and by the way, for Christmas my children gave me a gift voucher for tea at the Ritz and we have booked a table for this month.

Surely then I shall be offered the absolute crème de la crème of a scone. Or, as you might say, a dream come true!

Ahead of a Women’s History Month exhibition at Wanstead Library, Judith Garfield MBE of Eastside Community Heritage looks at the history of women’s rights campaigns, including the work of former Woodford Green resident Sylvia Pankhurst

T

he world has changed and continues to do so, and women of the East End of London have played their part.

From the matchwomen of Bow to the Ford factory machinists of Dagenham, the women of east London have fought for their rights, their beliefs, their communities … and we’re not finished yet!

In 1914, Sylvia Pankhurst split from the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), formed by her mother Emmeline and sister Christabel, and started up her own branch of suffragettes.

This branch was called the East London Federation of Suffragettes (ELFS) and was established in Old Ford Road, Bow. The reason for the split was that Sylvia’s mother and sister did not think a movement led by working-class women would have the necessary clout to win the vote. They felt middle- and upper-class women had more power. Sylvia did not agree.

The East End of London has been a hub of activism throughout history As well as campaigning for the women’s vote, the ELFS aimed to address issues relevant to working-class women. They set up a day nursery and cheap restaurant (part of their campaign against rising food prices) on Old Ford Road, a toy

factory in Norman Grove that employed men and women at an equal, living wage and a relief programme providing children with milk. They employed tactics such as lobbying and mass mobilisation, instead of the single heroic acts favoured by the WSPU – a spell in prison was not something these women could afford, they had families relying on their wage. Whilst the WSPU suspended their Votes for Women campaign during the First World War, the ELFS continued to demonstrate in favour of women gaining the vote, as well as other women’s rights issues, such as equal pay.

The ELFS were not a single issue campaign group; they were a revolution that aimed to change the role of women in society.

women to the electoral register, it still represented less than half of adult women in the UK. A significant if not partial victory, at the same time in 1918, the Parliamentary Qualification of Women Act was passed, enabling women to stand as Members of Parliament. The first woman MP was elected in 1918. But the story continues. No sooner had the act passed than many former suffragettes and suffragists got to work on the campaign to extend the vote to women under 30 and those over 30 who had been excluded. They found victory in 1928 when the Equal Franchise Act finally awarded women the vote on equal terms to men, at age 21.

am currently councillor for Roding ward, as I have been for the past nearly eight years. I’m also the leader of our small group of Liberal Democrat councillors, hoping it can grow in May! Over the last eight years, I’ve successfully fought many battles on behalf of Roding residents, most notably for safe pedestrian and cycle crossings at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout, but also for a crossing on St Barnabas Road.

I’ve also campaigned against closures of local public facilities and worked hard on numerous individual residents’ cases. I am particularly interested in environmental sustainability, housing and planning issues.

This is why I have been behind important local movements, such as the one to save South Woodford Odeon and why I have met with post office officials about keeping George Lane post office open.

have lived in South Woodford, on the Firs Estate, for the last 25 years. My wife and I raised our family here – this is my home and I’m proud to stand as a Labour candidate here.

I am currently the chair of governors at a local primary school and the governor of a local secondary school. I am also a parishioner of a South Woodford church where I am a member of the parish council and convenor of the parish justice and peace group.

I

n my retirement, making sculptures has become not so much a hobby but more of a compulsion, making demands on my time that I have to fit into a surprisingly busy life. I get an idea in my head that I have to work on.

There is a pen and pencil design phase, then decisions about what materials to use, then where to source the materials followed by technical ‘how to’ problems. Finally, the modelling or construction in my workshop. It is a series of challenges for which solutions have to be found.

Where did it start, this urge to make things? Well, it has to have been my secondary modern school education. My favourite subjects when I was 14 or 15 were metalwork and technical drawing. I was lucky enough to be able to get into university directly from my secondary school because it began to offer A levels. But, in addition, you needed a clutch of O levels and much to my disgust, metalwork and technical drawing did not count towards university

My life led me away into a career in children’s social care. When it was time to give this up, I looked back to my schooldays and resumed my passion for making things and working in materials, especially metal.

From Jackson Pollock to Strictly Come Dancing, local sculptor John Rowlands – one of many artists taking part in this year’s Woodford Festival – explains the diverse inspiration and materials behind his work A large shed at the bottom of my garden is where it happens. It is equipped with all sorts of tools, some small and some large.

These include a small forge, a blacksmith’s anvil, oxyacetylene and electric welding equipment. I also work in clay, wax and plaster and make moulds using silicon rubber. So, the workshop has to be rearranged according to what I am doing. You have to clear the

I developed techniques and some awareness of thinking in art thanks to City Lit adult education college in Covent Garden. But I don’t think I offer any great conceptual depth in my work. I want my sculptures to be visually exciting, or at least interesting. Sometimes

my sculptures are figurative, sometimes they are entirely abstract, and often they are somewhere in between.

I get themes in my head and respond by making sculptures.

An early theme was raptorlike birds. I found that you could create dramatic winglike structures in sheet metal using oxyacetylene cutting. For another theme, I worked in clay and wax to produce a series of sitting figures to try to describe the personal space marked out by homeless people sitting on the street. I also enjoy the paintings of Jackson Pollock and I wanted to make sculptures like he painted. This meant creating some rules, some limits, and then allowing pieces of metal to drop or splatters of plaster to find

their own way into the structure.

And then, being an unashamed Strictly Come Dancing fan, I found myself wanting to capture the rhythmic angularity of tango dancing in static metal pieces.

And more recently, I have been making simple figures engaged in different sports.

Although I would like to exhibit my work more, I have no interest in selling pieces. I make them on a whim or if commissioned by friends. I then charge for materials but not for labour. If I had a higher profile, I would need to charge some sort of market price. But that would bring pressures and complications I do not want. The last thing I want is to feel under pressure to produce. Today, I make three or four pieces a year.

am a Cumbrian who moved to London for work, which is where I met my wife and started my family. I am married to Alice, an NHS doctor, and together we have two children. We moved to Woodford as it is a great place to raise a family, with great schools and a community in which our children flourish.

Since moving to Woodford, I have been shocked by how much Redbridge Labour neglects our part of the borough. Woodford is not their priority and it shows. Coming from a northern workingclass family, I was brought up to believe that you cannot stand idly by when someone is letting your community down, and Labour is letting our community down. Nowhere is Labour failing our area more than on crime. Crime is rising at an alarming rate. In

It is not right and Woodford deserves much better when it comes to policing. Ensuring that Woodford and Churchfields get a fair deal on policing is my priority. As a former special constable, I have such respect for the police and the job they do and I will never tire of campaigning on this issue. Woodford is a great place to live and I pledge to fight for the area so that it continues to be just that.

I

have always lived in the borough, apart from a period of four years in the Netherlands. This experience, along with other jobs on the Continent, broadened my horizons, opening my eyes to another, often better way of looking at the world than what I had seen at home.

Here, many people have had enough of the traditional system and are seeking a party that properly represents them.

Yet they continue to vote for the same old parties, expecting that somehow change will happen. A Green Party member since November 2014, I have also stood for the party in the Roding ward by-election in May 2016. My ideas are not constrained by past practices.

In times of great change, it is important to adapt to new circumstances, and I believe the outcome of these council

elections will be determined by national issues as much as by local ones. We have policies on a broad spectrum of issues, from the NHS to Brexit, in addition to the environmental core issues for which we are best known.

I would relish the opportunity to represent all the local people in South Woodford, not just niche markets or restricted age groups. Hoping for improved local services for both the elderly and the young, I would welcome the chance for a grandmother and her grandchildren to cycle down an unpolluted, accident-free George Lane.

The basket case Eco-friendly craftspeople from South Woodford are invited to publicise their products at an upcycling fair this March. Ahead of the event, which will feature a range of baskets made from recycled materials, Marian Temple presents the case for banishing plastic bags from our lives… and from the lives of our oceandwelling friends

R

ecently, several things have come together to concentrate minds on our use of plastic. Not before time. David Attenborough’s wonderful Blue Planet II did not pull punches, making all too clear the results of our overuse of plastic and our casual attitude to its disposal.

Who can forget seeing dolphins, turtles and even whales entangled in plastic or ingesting the stuff? In both cases, a slow and painful death. Albatrosses fly hundreds of miles to bring back food for their chicks. That food can be plastic they have mistaken for fish. Another death sentence. Autopsies on fulmars found dead on beaches reveal stomach contents including items such as balloons, cling film, toothbrushes and packaging.

Single-use plastic toothpicks will perforate the stomach of any bird that swallows it. David Attenborough sums it up:“Plastic is now found everywhere in the ocean, from its surface to its greatest depth.” And what damage it does!

Maybe it’s time for the basket to make a comeback…

Then there is the recent decision

by China to stop importing our waste plastic for recycling, which has caused a major headache for those in power. One hopes they are not casting around

for an alternative country that will conveniently rid us of our rubbish. One would hope they are thinking seriously about our use of plastic, much of which is unnecessary and would seem to benefit the packaging industry rather than anyone else.

So, oceans and China… obviously time for a change. It’s good to think globally and act locally and that is exactly what the Wanstead Upcycling Fair on 31 March is all about. So much of the everyday plastic we use is bags for shopping. Even ‘bags for life’ are made of plastic! What did people use before plastic bags? Why, shopping bags of, course, a wonderful invention!

No reason why we shouldn’t be using shopping bags today and the fair will show us a variety of creatively made bags and baskets from recycled and biodegradable materials. No harm will be caused

to the environment at the end of their useful lives.

Maybe it’s time for the basket to make a comeback. After all, it is the 450th anniversary of the founding of the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.

Baskets will be for sale at the fair, of course, and you may have seen the current display of environmentally friendly shopping bags in Wanstead Library’s display cases. Pieces include work by Mary Butcher, the queen of her field and sometime resident basketmaker at the V&A Museum. Three pieces were loaned by Mary Masaba, recent winner of the Creative Basketry prize and John Page, head of basketry at City Lit,

Habiba Ahmed, the borough’s recycling officer, will be there as well, to give advice and information on reducing waste and running drop-in sessions for children and families with some fun decorating of cloth bags.

It’s not too late to apply for a stall at this event to publicise, demonstrate or sell your own environmentally friendly goods.

It would definitely be worth spending part of your Saturday meandering among the stalls and enjoying some tasty food, plastic packaging free, of course.
