How does your garden grow? A seemingly simple question with a surprisingly vast array of possible answers. From the simplest of responses (“very well, thanks”), to elaborate explanations of photosynthesis and an analysis of soil structure and irrigation methods best suited to publications other than this. For our purposes, I’d like to rephrase this 18thcentury query posed to a certain disagreeable Mary and ask instead: what do our gardens show?

Gardening itself isn’t to everyone’s pleasure, but it takes a particularly finicky passer-by not to glean any enjoyment from a well-manicured herbaceous border or a row of smiling daffodils. So, whether you planted the seed or enjoyed the fruit, our community gardens present to us a journey and a destination all at once. Silver bells and cockle shells aside, there is as much beauty in the work that has taken place as there is in the results on show.

In many ways, parks and gardens are the horticultural barometer of our communities. They are the bats of the urban ecosystem, giving an insight into the health of those they rely upon for their own wellbeing (bats, of course, making up eight of the government’s official indicator species for monitoring biodiversity). And just as the common pipistrelle requires a healthy food chain for its survival, our gardens, especially our communal gardens, require a healthy community to tend to their growing needs. We see it in the flower beds and the garden patches we pass each day. We see the community love in the spring blossom.

In short, we see a cared-for community in the community-cared-for gardens. And they are infectious. They spread the seeds of civic pride.

Relocation of Royal Mail’s South Woodford delivery office will go ahead this year

Royal Mail has confirmed it is to relocate South Woodford's delivery office to Chingford later this year. "Royal Mail needed to find a new location for its South Woodford delivery operations as it is currently housed in an old building [on Marlborough Road] that no longer meets our requirements, given the changing mailbag.

South Woodford does not have sufficient parking space for Royal Mail vehicles, or for moving mail around safely on site. It also does not provide any

customer parking," explained a Royal Mail spokesperson. The move, which is expected to take place in the summer or autumn, will see operations merge with the Chingford delivery office, located over three miles away at 106 Station Road. Those opposed to the move highlight the fact there is no quick way to travel to Chingford by public transport to collect mail items and the relocation means the loss of a much-needed community asset.

A petition against the plans received 1,667 signatures.

Mexico to Canada: a long walk for mental health

South Woodford has been identified as a potential station for inclusion in TfL's Step-Free Access Programme. There are currently 71 Underground stations with step-free access.

South Woodford resident Joe Boot will embark on the 'adventure of a lifetime' on 1 April when he begins the first leg of a 3,000-mile walk from Mexico to Canada along the Continental Divide Trail. "[The trail] is attempted by less than 200 people every year, with a lot less completing the entire hike," said 23-year-old Joe, a University of Leicester graduate who currently works at South Woodford Library and Gym. The Woodford closes less than a year after opening Residents and businesses have raised objections to an application by fast food restaurant Subway to open a branch in South Woodford.

The planning application for 116 George Lane – the former site of David Anthony's Shoes, which closed at the end of February – requests permission to replace the shop's original Victorian frontage and install four condensers and two air vents. "As a local resident and proprietor on George Lane, I am hugely concerned about the globalisation of our local high street… If this application is approved, George Lane will be one step closer to losing it’s Victorian character and heritage, something the Redbridge Local Plan claims to be committed to preserving and enhancing," said Little Woodford Café owner Joe Federico. Local community gardeners are hoping to establish a new work group to maintain the flower bed located on platform two at Snaresbrook Station.

The mini garden was created several years ago by station staff, but with changes to London Underground’s staffing policy there will no longer be a fixed pool of personnel working there, and it is feared the patch will not survive. “It makes absolute sense for station users to take over some possession of the garden,” said guerrilla gardener Marian Temple. "We have already met London Underground Area Manager Claudia Bourghatti, who came to the station to see what we were talking about.

She is supportive of the idea of a Snaresbrook Station Gardening Group." A meeting will be held at the station on 12 March from 11.30am. Visit swvg.co/snaregdn

The Wanstead and Woodford Marie Curie fundraising group are aiming to raise £5,000 in March for the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal. The money raised will help ensure local people can receive free home nursing care at the end of their lives and spend quality time in their own homes with family and friends. “You will see the collectors on Wanstead High Street and George Lane, South Woodford in their large yellow hats, bright tabards and trays of daffodil pins,” said group coordinator Jill Playford.

Tomorrow’s poets meet the Redbridge Rhymesters

Children from Snaresbrook Primary School joined creative poetry group the Redbridge Rhymesters at the Allan Burgess Centre in Wanstead in February for a ‘lively and inspiring’ workshop, writing and performing poems on the theme of fashion. “The children wrote some very imaginative poems, and the session gave everyone a chance to learn how people from different eras and places can be encouraged to share their knowledge,” said Alexandra Wilde. The school, located on Meadow Walk in South Woodford, will be working with Age UK Redbridge, Barking and Havering throughout 2017, raising funds for the charity as part of a programme of intergenerational activities. Another workshop is set to be held in October.

Iain Duncan Smith MP has pledged to campaign against the threatened closure of South Woodford's Post Office, which has been confirmed as one of 37 branches across the country that will be shut down or franchised to retail partners.

“I will be helping campaign to keep this Post Office open. Many people rely on it for the services which it gives. It also offers a certain service to the rest of the shopping community on George Lane by helping attract people into the area who then go on to spend money in other outlets on George Lane. Many of the elderly rely on the Post Office and use it regularly," said the Member of Parliament for Chingford and Woodford Green. "I am concerned that the management of the Post Office seem unable to understand just what an asset they have in George Lane."

Recruitment course at local Air Training Corps

The 241 (Wanstead and Woodford) Squadron Air Training Corps will be starting a new recruitment course for 12- to 16-year-olds in March. “There will be a presentation on the activities and opportunities we provide for our cadets, a separate briefing for parents on what the squadron is all about and a tour of the premises,” said a spokesperson for the unit, which was founded in 1941. Local resident meets Prince Charles three times

South Woodford resident Neil Martin, who is chief executive of the South Woodford-based Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade (JLGB), met HRH The Prince of Wales three times in the first week of February. The royal encounters began when JLGB’s Redbridge Band collected a Youth United Social Action Award at Buckingham Palace.

The very next day, Prince Charles visited Yavneh College in Hertfordshire, where the social action undertaken by hundreds of pupils was showcased. "You’ll be sick of seeing me soon!” quipped the Prince, as he and Neil continued their conversation from the previous day. The third meeting came when Neil returned to Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE in recognition of his 'inspirational vision, leadership and drive'.

Simultaneous chess display with Grand Master

A similar (smaller) event took place at Wanstead House in 2009

Chingford and Wanstead and Woodford Chess Clubs will be jointly hosting a charity chess display at Wanstead House on 10 March. Grand Master Simon Williams and International Master Richard Bates will be taking on up to 50 challengers to raise funds for the British Lung Foundation in memory of former Chingford member Robert Brown, who recently died of pulmonary fibrosis aged 57. Players of all abilities are invited to take part in the challenge (adults: £12; juniors: £8), which will begin at 7.15pm.

Quiet spectators are also welcome and a cash bar and refreshments will be available.

During the AGM, Chair Nicky Tranmer thanked the committee, friends, councillors and members of the society for their support and hard work during our second year. We have grown from a group of neighbours who felt they needed to be proactive in shaping the future of their local community to a group with a membership base of over 500.

There was also special thanks to Ken Bean for his help with planning matters.

2016 was a tumultuous year for the UK, and 2017 does not seem like it will be any less controversial. Local infrastructure is at breaking point, and we

We have an opportunity to shape our local area… have seen many planning proposals over the last few years that threaten our community and village atmosphere. The aggressive housing targets that Redbridge Council are proposing puts many of South Woodford’s commercial sites at risk. If they come to fruition, they will reduce the opportunity to work locally and further increase the burden on infrastructure in the area.

Also, as the number of local workers reduces, our local shops, which thrive on an active town centre, will suffer and close.

Research carried out by the council itself has already pointed

out there is limited ability to improve infrastructure in South Woodford; basic support, such as local schools and surgeries, will not be able to accommodate the additional population and the recent poor performance of the Central Line does not bode well for the commuting public.

We do have an opportunity, however, to shape our local area through the creation of a Neighbourhood Plan, but more help is needed to enable us to fully engage with the local planning department, local businesses and residents. The area that we have proposed be covered by our Neighbourhood Plan is the full E18 postcode area, as well as the Woodford Trading Estate. This is the estate on which Tesco's supermarket and a number of other businesses currently trade. This area has been included as it is considered locally as South Woodford, and if over-development occurs in this area, it will have an enormous impact on South Woodford infrastructure.

To date, we have built good relationships with councillors, MPs, the local press and the council's planning department.

We also secured a public meeting with the leader of the council, Councillor Jas Athwal, to

discuss development in South Woodford.

We are currently concerned about the following issues: zz The confirmed closure of the Marlborough Road sorting office and the potential closure of the nearby Post Office. zz The displacement of Waltham Forest Fencing on the High Road, the adjacent businesses and development of a new housing block. zz The ongoing threat to businesses on the Station Estate and the possibility of high-rise development. zz The many small-scale 'in-fill' developments. zz The proposed temporary 'container' housing development at Charlie Brown's Roundabout zz Pollution in the area. zz The ongoing wait regarding the application to list The George and The Railway Bell as Assets of Community Value.

While we are now in a stronger bargaining position when it comes to negotiations with the council due to our growing membership, we are still only a very small group of active individuals, and we hope that the rise in our numbers reflects the fact people are fed up with change being inflicted upon them when it makes no sense and that they will become more and more involved in the future.

We like to think we act as a pause button, to allow people to think about the consequences of change and then perhaps work on some alternatives.

There is a lot of work to do, so please become a member if you have not already done so.

Talking Hedges As Elmhurst Gardens prepares for the coming spring season, the Green Flag park talks about some of the improvements made in recent months and invites you all to visit soon

H

ello from Elmhurst Gardens! My Friends of Elmhurst Gardens and conservation volunteers have been busy planting saplings along the fences bordering both sides of me to fill in gaps and reduce the noise from the A406 and Southend Road.

They also did some rebuilding work on my mini-beasts home to welcome more beasts and perhaps some stag beetles, so look out for life at the refurbished house.

Try and keep me tidy please, because I like to look my best…

Some of my bushes along the Southend Road fence were given a cut and shaped to make them look smarter for visitors.

In addition, two fine-looking young trees and some new

plants have been established near my bowling green by the Friends and volunteers under the supervision of experts from Vision RCL. I like them, and we must make sure they are looked after and flourish.

Have you seen the new ramp for my visitors at the Southend Road entrance? This is rather good and will make it easier for everyone to enter, especially my disabled guests.

Some of the bulbs planted last autumn by the Friends and children from Churchfields and Oakdale schools will be raising their heads above ground when it becomes warmer in the spring, so all of you should see a beautiful display of flowers to enjoy.

Cats communicate with each other through scented markings and body language as well as hissing or yowling. Their body language may be too subtle for humans to understand, so they communicate with us by vocal means, mainly the miaow. There are, of course, many miaows for us to interpret. There is the sometimes plaintive: “I want to go out now” miaow, compared to the: “Please get up. I want my breakfast!” miaow. Then there is the loving, purry miaow, usually accompanied by rubbing your legs while you prepare their food. The reason they hiss is that they are angry or defensive. Yowls may mean they are in distress or feeling aggressive. If you listen to your cat, you will soon be able to understand the various miaows and what they are saying. And if you observe the body language you may be able to translate more. It will certainly be fun trying.

ne of the most pleasurable aspects of my role as a director trustee at Vision-Redbridge Culture and Leisure is to sample the diversity and talent across our leisure services.

It is so well recognised that it continuously receives Arts Council grants…

In mid-December, I was invited to see The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at Redbridge Drama Centre (RDC). As in past productions, the RDC takes a well-known story and through an ensemble cast breathes new and exciting life into it, with some traditional surprises. The run-time was approximately one and a quarter hours, which shows the clever construction and adaption of the original storyline to maintain momentum and keep young, fidgety bums on the chairs in the audience. I would thoroughly recommend making it a point to see RDC’s next Christmas show.

It is important to emphasise that these productions would not be possible if it were not for the ongoing work of RDC, which has worked with schools and cultural industries for the past 45 years to bring the best opportunities to develop creativity amongst Redbridge’s children and young people and support curriculum learning through drama.

RDC offer a broad range of services and experiences to make this possible. Facilitators

use drama to tackle a wide range of issues whilst developing collaborative skills and a range of drama techniques. Redbridge schools buy Drama Centre days from April to the following March. Schoolchildren even have the opportunity to learn how to create a 15- to 20-minute live television or radio programme.

Where else can schoolchildren do that in London, let alone in the rest of the UK? Located in South Woodford, RDC is a unique facility. It is so well recognised that it continuously receives grants from the Arts Council in order to maintain the important and significant work it is charged with. In 2007–2012, RDC became a Regularly Funded Organisation (RFO) of the Arts Council of England (ACE). In 2012–2015, RDC was funded by ACE to be part of its National Portfolio and for the foreseeable future, it will continue to be funded by ACE. Such organisations represent some of the best arts practice in the world, and they play a vital role in helping RDC meet its mission of great art and culture for everyone. To be selected for this represents a considerable achievement for RDC. This revenue funding allows RDC to expand its professional theatre programme and develop the resident and associate theatre company schemes, as well as offering more opportunities for young people to watch great theatre productions, be inspired by excellent artists and create their own work and perform to new audiences.

Eleanor Glover is pleased that TfL have pledged to install pedestrian crossings at Charlie Brown's Roundabout, but with work not due to begin until next year, the campaign for safety improvements continues

sk anyone in South Woodford and I’m sure they’d agree that Charlie Brown’s Roundabout is a hazard for all who use it.

Whether you’re a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist, getting from A to B can be a precarious experience when traversing this busy junction. Since the death last November of a local woman, hit by a lorry at Charlie Brown's Roundabout on her way back from the school run, I have joined a campaign to help make the junction a safer and less polluted place.

The terrible news stunned the community. We knew it could have been any one of us, a

What makes this story even more tragic is that plans to improve safety at Charlie Brown’s have been in the pipeline since 2002. But still nothing has been done to protect those with no choice but to cross the roundabout, and now another number has been needlessly added to the road traffic accident statistics.

Plus, as much as I welcome the news, the residents of South Woodford have been in this position before. Promises were broken in 2009 when TfL and the then-Mayor of London Boris Johnson prioritised work at Gants Hill instead of honouring their commitment to sort out Charlie Brown’s. The past failure on TfL’s part to implement safe crossings at Charlie Brown’s for pedestrians means that it’s more important than ever to keep up the pressure – especially as the toucan crossings will also help alleviate another dangerous and topical issue: air pollution.

Since I began campaigning, and after an emotional plea at a Redbridge Council meeting, TfL have now pledged to install toucan crossings in 2018, once a

precautions when venturing out in the toxic air. Redbridge was one of the places that recorded some of the highest readings.

Back in 2015, an air quality survey at Charlie Brown’s found that concentrations of particulate matter were four times greater than those recorded at Oxford Circus in central London.

Air pollution, particularly from particulates, contributes to 40,000 premature deaths in London each year and is linked to increases in asthma, other respiratory health issues, dementia and affects lung development in children.

Due to the dangerous levels of air pollution in Redbridge, the borough is in an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and they are currently putting an Air Quality Action Plan together to help tackle the issue. While we await this publication, I urge everyone to read up on the problem and do whatever you can to help alleviate air pollution in Redbridge and stop this silent killer. Congestion is the worst offender in Redbridge, so taking

fewer car journeys, jumping on the bus, walking or cycling are all ways to help. Installing the toucan crossings at Charlie Brown’s will make life safer for pedestrians, encourage people to leave the car at home and therefore also contribute to improving local air quality.

On a global scale, it can feel like things are out of our control, but together we can help make South Woodford a safer and less polluted place. As we continue the campaign, I think of the woman who lost her life on the roundabout and the family she left behind. I hope she’s not just another statistic but someone who inspired the local community to take action.

watched the recent TV documentary based on Alan Bennett’s diaries. What is the key to his (what looks like effortless) appeal? It’s not on the grand scale: “I’m having my eyebrows trimmed for the first time,” or: “It’s one of my life’s regrets that we’ve never kept a donkey.” Sometimes there’s social comment: “The poor don’t get much of a look-in these days.” Even anger: “The closure of public libraries is a form of child abuse.” He just seems to look, to listen, to think, to record. Oh, to catch his tone! (Mind you, I don’t have anything as exciting as Maggie Smith parked in a van in my front garden).

I’d negotiated the Gatwick Express, the District and Central Lines, luggage and all, but my fiver was at the ready so Clarks could ferry me up the short final lap from the station.

All the cars in the road were white with frost. But home is such a good feeling. Admittedly, even better when the heating’s back on. Less good when my car refused to start the following morning. But Brad Stevens was round the same day from his garage in Wanstead and took all of half a minute to get it purring away happily. Even suggested I pop it round just before closing time so he could tuck it up inside on an overnight charge.

The next job was to restore Greenwich time to my watch (a precious Christmas gift from my daughter). I couldn’t seem to manage it. Anxious, I suppose, not to do any damage.

I was thinking about it the next morning when I found myself looking at other watches in the window of Richard Miles Jewellers. Yet another of our very long-established independent businesses. And in the shop, looking out, with a friendly smile on his face was Dinesh Dewchand, the director. I thought he’d laugh at me. I didn’t even need a new battery! But not a bit of it. I was treated like an honoured guest.

“Do I have to pull the winder out hard?” (It’s actually called the ‘crown’). “Yes, quite hard.” Oh well, I thought, now I know, I’ll manage it myself in future. But Dinesh was still speaking: “Mind you, not too hard.”

And my timepiece was now, like me, happily back in South Woodford.

all the singing ladies Linda Williams is one of many local ladies contributing to the success of the Ultrasound Female Choir. If you can hold a tune (and if you are a member of the fairer sex) you will be welcome, too

T

he Ultrasound Female Choir, formed by singing teacher Lisa Tsindides in January 2013, has now entered its fifth year and is going from strength to strength.

We have over 45 members from all walks of life, some local to South Woodford and the surrounding area, and some from further afield.

Some members have previous experience of music and amateur dramatics but this is not essential. The only criterion for joining is the ability to sing in tune.

All our concerts raise funds for local charities…

The choir’s repertoire includes songs from popular music and gospel, to light opera and musical theatre. In 2013 we sang a set of songs from the 1950s at

a vintage fair in Wanstead and in 2014, as part of the Woodford Festival, we sang songs from the 1940s, wearing appropriate costumes at both events.

Last year was a very busy one for us, with another appearance at the Woodford Festival, as well as at Haven House Children’s Hospice’s summer fair, Derby Road Church centenary celebrations and two performances in October and December at Waitrose in South Woodford. December was particularly busy with shows at Waterloo Station, at the Cafe on the Lane in George Lane and our annual Christmas concert at High Beach church among the highlights. All performances were a great success and raised over £3,000 for good causes.

All our concerts raise funds for local charities, and proceeds from

the events in 2016 were donated to Haven House Children’s Hospice, The Basil Skyers Myeloma Foundation and Razed Roof. The latter is an inclusive performing arts group for people with, and without, learning difficulties and disabilities and is based in Harlow.

At our weekly rehearsals, we practice singing techniques and breathing and voice control.

We ensure we break for a cup

of tea served by Carol and Sue, delicious cakes supplied

by Jane and time to chat. The choir also has an enthusiastic social committee who organise evenings out and trips away.

New members are welcome to come along to any of our evening sessions to see firsthand if we are a group they would like to join. Our rehearsals are great fun and a great stress buster!

n the 19th century, women were considered less important for education and kept out of politics. Those (mainly working class) women who worked were relegated to roles of prostitutes, servants, fish cleaners, housekeepers, governesses and school teachers, though some exceptional women became notable authors, artist’s models and stars of the stage.

Reform came slowly: London University accepted women in 1878 and women could join local councils in 1888. The age of consent was raised in 1885 to what we have today (16), and most importantly, the Married Woman’s Property Act of 1882 allowed women to keep what they owned whether property or money. In the 20th century, after the First World War, things began to change with the enfranchisement of women over 30 in 1919. Corsets began to loosen and new career opportunities opened up in film (Elizabeth Taylor), radio, sport (Virginia Wade) and most important of all, politics (Margaret Thatcher).

From Florence Nightingale to Sylvia Pankhurst, local historian Jef Page invites you to join him in honouring the life and times of a number of famous women at a presentation at South Woodford Library this March as part of Women’s History Month celebrations Whilst I will be mainly speaking about British women, I will also highlight Rosa Parks, who sparked the revolt against black segregation and for civil rights in the USA when in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama she refused to give up her seat and move to the back of the bus.

For my talk, I will be discussing a wide range of famous women, from Sylvia Pankhurst – a leading suffragette and peace campaigner who lived in Woodford – to Rosalind Franklin – one of the discoverers of DNA who sadly never lived to see the success of her research. From a different world, and a class apart, Labour MP Ellen Wilkinson led the Jarrow March to London in 1936.

the most famous but I will also be talking about Eva Luckes, an excellent matron of the London Hospital from 1880–1919 (we could do with her now); Elizabeth Garret Anderson, England’s first female doctor and first female town mayor of Aldeburgh in Suffolk in 1908; and Jenny Worth, who wrote a best-selling trilogy of memoirs about her work as a 1950s midwife upon which the BBC series Call the Midwife is based. These are favourites of mine, as I went on a one-day strike when I worked at the Middlesex Hospital to keep the EGA Hospital for Women open (which is sadly closed now).

In the art world, Dame Laura Knight was the first woman accepted by the Royal Academy.

She broke an ‘unwritten’ rule of painting a nude portrait of herself. I will also look at the life of Cynthia Payne (and her love of luncheon vouchers), who as a

Other local women deserve their place. Maria Dickin CBE founded the PDSA in South Woodford in 1917; Eva Hart MBE survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and lived in Chadwell Heath; Greer Garson OBE was a Hollywood film star (Goodbye, Mr Chips and Mrs Miniver) born in Manor Park and Wanstead’s Doreen Golding is the Pearly Queen of the Old Kent Road and Bow Bells.

This exhibition, Organised by Eastside Community Heritage, records the stories of women from the East End of London who have been involved in campaigns concerning women’s working rights or who are descendants of members of the East London Federation of Suffragettes (ELFS). anuary's meeting aimed to streamline Redbridge Council and promote efficiency in the progression of council business. This was based on an initial review using the McKinsey 7S framework (structure, strategy, systems, skills, style, staff and shared values) to allow the council to make circa £240k in savings. This does not bode well for future decision making. zz The abolition of yet more committees, with less opportunity for councillors to be challenged. Given what we have seen with the implementation of the parking strategy in Wanstead, there is already not enough scrutiny and challenge of proposals, which leads to suboptimal decision-making. zz The abolition of two council meetings every year (down to six). Fewer meetings mean fewer items debated and passed, thus reducing the pace of council business. zz Banning the public from asking questions of cabinet members unless about an item on the agenda.

While there is an issue of relevance and good order at a meeting with an agenda, prohibiting new questions so answers can be prepared and learnt by rote just leads to a robotic administration.

All this proposal does is

provide a safety net for poorly performing cabinet members, who should be raising their game not hiding behind it. zz Changing council meetings to allow set speeches from cabinet members with no opportunity for the opposition to reply.

zz Stopping councillors and the public from asking supplementary questions to follow up the first answer.

Savings of £240k may well be made, but when pressed, the council was unable to provide a detailed breakdown of how these savings would be achieved.

All these developments seem to point to reducing the influence of local opinion over decisionmaking and withdrawing accountability of councillors while centralising power at the Town Hall. Public opinion is being ridden over roughshod by the council. Decisions are being made on the hoof without proper consultation, scrutiny and debate. This is an unwelcome development and does not bode well for future decision-making in Redbridge. Local residents are not adverse to change, but the correct consultation framework with appropriate checks and balances needs to be in place. It has served Redbridge well since its inception in 1965, so why there is a rush now to change this so unceremoniously is questionable.

This is undemocratic as it does not reflect wide enough support for the scale and importance of the changes proposed.

common thread throughout Redbridge Music Society’s current ‘Wigmore to Wanstead’ programme is to bring talented young musicians to the attention of the Redbridge public via the provision of a performance opportunity in front of a critical but supportive audience at a local venue. On 27 April local young flautist and recorder player Daniel Swani will perform works ranging from baroque to modern at the Churchill Room in Wanstead Library.

Daniel was born in 1999 and started flute and recorder lessons at the age of 10. Whilst attending Woodbridge High School, he studied for five years at Redbridge Music School and was principal flute in the Redbridge Music School Symphony Orchestra. Daniel currently studies flute with Anna Pope and recorder with Barbara Law at The Purcell School, where he holds a government MDS scholarship.

On Saturdays, he attends the Junior Royal Academy of Music, where he was awarded the senior woodwind prize. He is principal flute in the Junior Academy Symphony Orchestra and also a member of the recorder consort.

He is currently a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and was previously principal flute with the London Schools' Symphony Orchestra.

With these orchestras, Daniel has performed at London’s Royal Festival and Albert Halls

and the Barbican Centre; he has also participated in a tour of Sweden. This year he became a London Philharmonic Orchestra Junior Artist, taking part in a programme that provides invaluable career development for promising young artists.

In 2012 Daniel was given the opportunity to perform alongside members of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) at the London Olympics Opening Ceremony in Stratford. In May 2014 he again played alongside the LSO at their 2014 open-air concert in Trafalgar Square, under the internationally-famous conductor Valery Gergiev. In November 2016 he performed live on BBC Radio 3's drivetime show In Tune as part of the Chineke Foundation Junior Wind Quartet.

Daniel is particularly grateful for the generous support of The Walter Bergman Fund and The Felicity Belfield Trust. Recently, he was awarded a scholarship offer to study at the Royal Academy of Music as a full-time student and will take this up in September 2017.

Daniel’s burning ambition is to be a performing musician and to have a seat in a top London orchestra. He is an outstanding player, both technically and musically, and many would agree that eventually playing in a major London orchestra is a foregone conclusion for such a talented young man.

e’ve had seven Woodford Festivals so far, six of which my husband Ron and I coordinated, and the last one, in 2016, which we helped to coordinate. It was hard work but a lot of fun at the same time. We’ve met some very talented people and had some great times.

The community festival for Woodford was originally the brainchild of Richard Hoskins, a former Church End councillor.

Little did we know what lay in store for us when we met one evening way back in 2008.

After putting an advert in local papers for volunteers to start up the organisation of a local festival, we were amazed to see how many turned up for the inaugural meeting of what would become the Woodford Festival Association. So many great individuals, clubs, groups and associations – who would have thought there is such a wealth of talent in Woodford and its environs?

What we thought would be a weekend festival with a handful of events grew into an amazing nine-day extravaganza with 85 different events spread out over 34 locations at the first Woodford Festival in October 2008, and it has grown steadily since then.

We have always been very lucky to have the full cooperation of local churches, other places of

Without all this, it would have been impossible to organise these events. Of course, the grants we gratefully received from Redbridge Council and other sources have helped considerably. The mayors of Redbridge have always been great supporters and, without fail, opened the festivities officially on the first day.

Modern, classical, jazz and choral music has always been very well featured in the events. It is good to know that we have such a great variety of superb singing and performing talent, and they were all eager to participate. Art in all its forms has also featured in our programme, with workshops, open studios, exhibitions, an art trail and great arts and crafts fairs attracting a lot of interest. I am proud to say that we came up with the idea

for some events that now form a staple part of our programme and attract a lot of interest. One of these was the open day at Woodford Fire Station, which is now a very popular annual event and is visited by many future firefighters and their parents.

Another idea was a pet church service, where the animals were not always as well behaved in the pews as they should have been.

Sporting events have also played an important part and over the years, we have had rugby and football matches, petanque boules demonstrations, tai chi and yoga evenings, forest and Olympic Park walks, and even the local Woodford Bowling Club opened its doors to the festival public.

There were a lot of other fun and entertaining events throughout

the years, too numerous to mention, but equally great.

Woodfordians have been spoilt for festival event choices in the past and it would be a great shame not to continue this celebration of local talent. Due to changes in the committee, we are now looking for new members willing to help keep this biennial festival going.

Photography biography

M

y journey with photography started in my late teens. This was in the 1970s, when 35mm photography moved from the professional (journalistic) world to the amateur one and the cameras themselves started to become more accessible.

The first camera I bought was a second-hand Pentacon Praktika 1B, with a standard 50mm f2.8 Zeiss (Jena) lens. This was a GDR-made (East German) camera and lens from the Zeiss Ikon factory. At the time, it represented good value for money and produced reasonable images. My contemporaries were buying Russian-made Zenit cameras, but I always found these to be too heavy and unsophisticated by comparison to their German cousins.

leaving school, I started work in the medical imaging industry, where there were many parallels, such as wet processing of X-ray films. Eventually, as I became more conversant with the camera and photography in general, I set up a basic darkroom at home and started developing and printing my own images. I bought my first high-end camera – a Canon A1 – in the early 1980s and took lots of landscapes, architecture and portraits. But, due to other priorities (a family), my photography took second place to other commitments. My work in medical imaging continued and, much as the photographic industry was in transit from chemical-based imaging to digital, so was medical imaging.

This meant that I was working with techniques and systems early on that would eventually become commonplace.

My interest in photography coincided with my first job. After

that my interest in taking pictures other than family photos was rekindled, finally buying my first DSLR when I took early retirement in 2008.

I have continued to enjoy my photography since and appreciate the convenience and the endless possibilities that the digital medium offers.

In 2012 I returned to work. My job was based in Germany, but I had the opportunity to

travel and this allowed me to re-embrace a hobby that I had neglected for many years. At the end of 2014 I retired for the last time and returned to the UK. Due to a chance meeting in 2015, I found myself joining the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, which has given me a new impetus to continue my photographic journey. A journey that I intend to continue for many years to come.
