Compassion is a simple yet immensely powerful trait. The desire to alleviate the suffering of others is an emotional response that – even if one is unable to prevent the cause of such pain – signifies an aspect of humanity that should not be taken for granted in this day and age. The sheer volume of deserving cases, however – on both a national and international scale, not to mention locally – can often be the cause of a certain amount of compassion fatigue. Where should we direct our time, energy and money when there are so many worthy recipients?

Clearly there is no right answer to this moral quandary – what may seem a less deserving cause to some may be a life's passion for others.

For the majority of us, any charitable donations we make are a reactive response, as opposed to those who proactively use their time to seek out or generate financial contributions for their chosen cause. It is easy to ignore the volunteer rattling a half-empty (or half-full) tin, but if we take a moment to appreciate the work and commitment that has gone into placing that collector there, perhaps it won't seem like such a big ask to offer up some loose change.

As human beings, we exert an undeniably powerful force over the world in which we live – a little compassion and thoughtfulness can go a long way to making it a force for good. South Woodford, it would seem, has no shortage of forces for good. From historic figures honoured at Woodford Memorial Hall (see page 12), to modern-day property developers making charitable donations (see page 20) and green-fingered members of the community offering up their time to improve our surroundings (see page 10), no act of kindness should be too big or too small. As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility, and that responsibility is Lee Marquis, Editor something we should all be aware of.

A petition opposing the possible redevelopment of the Sir James Hawkey Hall site in Woodford Green has received considerable support (over 1,500 signatures at the time of going to press) since it was started by Redbridge Conservative councillors at the end of January. The council have said that any changes to the site, which is designated in the Mayor of London's brownfield sites, would 'entail the due process and proper consultation if or when this went forward'. Judy Linard, a committee member of Woodford Pantomime, which use the hall for their annual show, is keen to see the venue

protected: "The sad thing is that an impression has been created over the past few years that the hall is unneeded by the local community, by the astronomical rises in the rent, driving most of the local clubs away. Even having sold 94% of tickets this year we barely broke even. The Hawkey Hall should be enjoyed and used by the whole community and available at a fair rent. We would like to let everyone know at this time, however, that the hall management has accepted our booking for January 2017, so the show will go on for one more year at least." Local student wins a place at Harvard

Haven House gardens to open to the public

Woodford County High School student Danukshi Mudannayake has won a place and financial support to study at Harvard College after participating in the Sutton Trust's US Programme.

Danukshi – whose academic interests include art, maths, history and French – is one of 43 students who have been selected under the early application deadline to US universities. "It still doesn't feel real, but I know that in the coming months I will have a lot to look forward to," said 18-yearold Danukshi, who is the first generation in her family to attend university.

Haven House Children's Hospice, which is set in 18 acres of protected woodland in Woodford Green, is set to hold its first ever Open Gardens Day on 7 May (from 12pm to 4pm). The event is part of a new campaign that aims to encourage green-fingered enthusiasts to raise funds for the charity by opening their own gardens to the public in June. Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Haven House, said: "The hospice's beautiful location next to Epping Forest is one of the reasons that Haven House is such a magical place for our children, families and staff." The leader of Redbridge Council has pledged that, despite financial pressure from government cuts, the number of libraries in Redbridge will not change in the lifetime of the current administration, which runs until 2018. The assurance follows a discussion of plans to relocate Woodford Green Library from Snakes Lane West to the Sir James Hawkey Hall site. "We propose to relocate Woodford Green Library to the existing Hawkey Hall building (subject to a capital works bid), and over time the site… could be considered for redevelopment as a whole," said Councillor Jas Athwal. "Once this work is complete Woodford Green Library, which is in need of much modernisation, would be developed with all options open.

With a new library in place this will mean that there will be upgraded facilities for residents in the area."

The council are keen to stress that any proposed plans will be subject to a public consultation.

A former Young National Chef of the Year has launched a new restaurant in South Woodford. Ben Murphy, who moved to France for two years to work at two three Michelin-starred restaurants under Eric Fréchon, won the culinary competition in 2012, before working at The Greenhouse in Mayfair. He has now opened The Woodford at 159 to 161 High Road, a Grade II listed building that formerly house the nightclub Funky Mojoe. The 100-cover restaurant spans two floors, with a dedicated oyster and seafood bar on the first floor. "Ben and the kitchen team will use British ingredients wherever possible, utilising classic French techniques learnt from his culinary mentors. His cuisine is refined, precise and plays with combinations of sweet and savoury flavours," said a spokesperson for the new venue, where signature dishes include hay-smoked pigeon breast, confit egg yolk and burnt brown bead consommé.

Redbridge ward boundaries

Society fundraising quiz proves popular

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England are inviting local residents to tell them where they think new ward boundaries should be drawn across Redbridge. The consultation, which is open until 4 April, is part of an electoral review of the borough that aims to deliver equality for voters in council elections so that each councillor represents roughly the same number of voters. "There has been significant population growth since the last review 16 years ago, but this hasn't been spread evenly across the borough.

Some wards have experienced far higher growth, meaning that some councillors represent significantly more residents than others," said a council spokesperson. Every ward in Redbridge is currently represented by three councillors and the Commission is interested in proposals for wards that could be represented by fewer councillors. LGBCE will publish their draft recommendations in June.

A quiz night organised by the South Woodford Society at the end of January was so popular that some people had to be turned away. Over one hundred people attended the event – which also included the community group's first AGM – raising £115 for Haven House Children's Hospice and £461.78 for the Society. The outgoing chair, Pearl Arbenser-Simmonds, thanked the committee, friends and members for their support and hard work during the first year of the society's life, which has grown from a group of neighbours who felt they needed to be proactive in protecting the local environment.

"We all moved here because we love the vibe of the area. Time has seen our environment change and not necessarily for the better. Seven-year-old South Woodford resident Orla Linnane has a new look after cutting off 10 inches of hair and donating it to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real-hair wigs to children that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. "Orla had been looking for a way to raise money for charity for some time," explained her mum, Rebekah. "Inspired by some friends, who did the same 18 months ago, she came up with this idea. Personally, I want to raise awareness that to donate hair to the Little Princess Trust is completely free (except for the haircut and postage). So, if anyone has long hair cut short, please don't let it get swept away into the bin.

Pop the plaited hair in a bag and send it off to have a wig made with no obligation to raise money." The Little Princess Trust has given away over 4,000 wigs since 2006. Without enough donated hair, the Trust has to purchase wigs for the children at an average cost of £350 per wig.

Entries are invited for the Reg Fowkes photographic competition, which honours the memory of the former president of the Woodford and Wanstead photographic Society. The annual event – which was established in 1995 by Reg's daughter Pat Smith – will raise money for St Mary's Church in South Woodford, where the winning entries will be displayed on 19 and 20 March. "My father would have been very happy. All he wanted was to encourage people to have a go at photography and over these past 20 years this competition has done precisely that," said Pat. Past winner Brian McCarthy recalls: "I had the privilege of being nominated best newcomer in 2014 and was awarded a year's free membership to Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society. It's a very friendly club and I would definitely recommend it." There are six categories, with cash prizes up for grabs. The closing date is 12 March.

Winston S. Churchill The Winston Churchill statue in Woodford Green is one of 41 post-war public sculptures across the country to be newly listed by Historic England, having received Grade II protected status. The sculpture, which was one of the first public statues of the iconic wartime Prime Minister, was reportedly liked by the man himself

T

he period after 1945 saw a shift from commemorative sculpture and architectural enrichment to the idea of public sculpture as a primarily aesthetic contribution to the public realm. Sculpture was commissioned for new housing, schools, universities and civic set pieces, with London and the counties of Hertfordshire and Leicestershire leading the way in public patronage. Thus, public sculpture could be an emblem of civic renewal and social progress.

By the late 20th century, however, patronage was more diverse and included corporate commissions and Arts Councilfunded community art. The ideology of enhancing the public realm through art continued, but with divergent means and motivation.

Visual language ranged from the abstraction of Victor Pasmore and Phillip King to the figurative approach of Elisabeth Frink and Peter Laszlo Peri, via those such as Lynn Chadwick and Barbara Hepworth who bridged the abstract and representational divide. The post-war decades are characterised by the exploitation of new, often industrial, materials and techniques, including new welding and casting techniques, plastics and concrete, while kinetic sculpture and 'ready mades' (using found objects) demonstrate an interest in composite forms.

In 1958 David McFall was commissioned by the Sir Winston Churchill Commemoration Fund to produce a bronze statue of Churchill for the Woodford constituency, which he served as MP from 1945 until his death in 1965. After some initial sittings while Churchill was on holiday at Cap Martin in the south of France, the main studies were carried out

by McFall at Churchill's home at Chartwell, Kent in May and June 1958, the final sittings by any artist before Churchill's death. A number of heads and busts were also produced from these sessions.

During production of the finished statue there was criticism of Churchill's angry expression from various quarters, including Lady Churchill, who wrote to David McFall on 13 December 1958: "Dear Mr McFall, I tried unsuccessfully to reach you on the telephone this morning, as I wanted to have a talk with you about the statue. I think it is a remarkable achievement; but I am disturbed at what to me, seems an exaggeration – indeed a caricature of Winston… I think angry and brutal expressions are particularly out of place because during the war whenever there

was a bad crisis, my husband was always calm and serene." The statue was therefore amended before casting was completed by the Art Bronze foundry on 2 September 1959. It was unveiled on 31 October 1959 at its site on Woodford Green by Field Marshall Viscount Bernard Montgomery.

Among the 5,000-strong crowd was Churchill himself, who gave a speech and complimented the sculptor.

Sir Winston Churchill had a remarkable career as a parliamentarian, statesman, writer and most memorably as Britain's wartime Prime Minister. During the war years, his was an immediately recognisable figure – the epitome of the bulldog spirit he fostered – stocky, bald-headed and somewhat hunched, his public image being amplified with carefully selected props such as siren suits and cigars.

However, at the end of the war his stock with the electorate was low, and memories of pre-war unemployment queues and a desire for change swept him out of office in 1945. He returned as Prime Minister in 1951, but by then he was clearly too old to effectively undertake such high office and gave way to Anthony Eden in 1955.

He remained in the Commons, however, until 1964, when he was finally persuaded not to stand again. He died a few months later, aged 90. His state funeral was the first to be accorded to a commoner since that of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, in 1852.

David McFall RA (1919-1988) was born in Glasgow and studied at the Junior School of Arts and Crafts in Birmingham, then at the Birmingham College of Art before moving to London and attending the Royal College of Art and the City and Guilds School. From 1944 to 1958 he worked as an assistant to Jacob Epstein, having already worked for Eric Gill. In 1950 he produced a pair of gilt bronze unicorns for Bristol Council House, and in 1951 he exhibited Boy and Horse at the Dome of Discovery at the Festival of Britain.

McFall became one of the most popular traditionalist portrait sculptors of the period, modelling a number of other prominent figures, including Clement Attlee and HRH Prince Charles, and was also noted for his nude female figures. From 1968 to 1969 he produced three stone friezes for the new extension of the Chartered Accountants' Hall by William Whitfield. Other examples of his public art include The Shying Horse at Blackhorse Road Underground Station (1968) and his final work, Son of Man at Canterbury Cathedral (1988).

Forest School student Callum Daniels tells Ruth Adams what he likes about living in E18

allum Daniels, 17, has lived all his life on the Firs Estate in South Woodford with parents Catherine and James and sister Alex, who's away at university. He went to Snaresbrook Primary School until he was 11, when he transferred to Forest School.

I asked him what he liked about living in South Woodford.

"The Central line being so nearby is great so I can easily get to Stratford or into London. South Woodford is near enough to London to be useful, but we don't have to suffer the busyness.

Another good thing is that I have many friends within a twominute walk of each other and I usually walk to school, unless I have really heavy bags. South Woodford is a safe area and has a good mix of people. Not all old or all young."

snack with family or friends and for a special meal. However, I'd be delighted with a quirky restaurant opening locally. Some seem so similar to each other."

What would he like to change about South Woodford?

"Not much to be honest.

However, I would like more local sports facilities, a football pitch for a casual kick-about with my friends would be good. Oh yes, I'd also like there to be more men's clothes shops." Local retailers take note!

Help make the beds The South Woodford Community Gardeners are ready for another season of green-fingered voluntary work. Marian Temple gives some insight into their gardening style and invites you to join them

I

n April 2014 we attacked the George Lane flower beds, all five of them. They were in a sorry state. We pulled out nettles, thistles and dandelions to reveal the original occupants still cowering in the beds.

Who are we? We later became the South Woodford Community Gardeners, but at that time we had no title. Like many, we had become desperate when the council, to save money, simply stopped maintaining the public flower beds.

Nothing puts an area into a spiral of decline more than the neglect of public spaces. Rubbish and vandalism follow.

We met with a council representative and the George Lane beds (later followed by the seven beds on the road bridge over the A406 opposite Waitrose) were handed over to us as a community group. The council are still responsible for grass mowing and shrub pruning. The rest is down to us. Residents and local businesses

have been very supportive, storing tools, providing hungry gardeners with coffee and cake and generally being very appreciative.

Amongst the group of volunteers there was a considerable amount of gardening expertise. Thus, the beds have taken on a very different character. Council contractors work to a timetable often organised months in advance. They cannot change tactics to take advantage of an early spring or a wet summer.

We residents, by contrast, can see what's happening in the beds and know what's needed. Whatever we plant stays there till the end of its life. No hoiking out a mass of geraniums in full flower because that's what's on the contract. No bare beds waiting for the next load of plants. We have added to the original planting from our own gardens and so have others.

Where did that thriving lemonscented geranium come from? An independent guerrilla gardener maybe? That's fine. Lots of ground cover plants have been introduced

as well. The more the ground is covered, the less the weeds grow.

Local flower shops donate plants that are past their sell-by date.

These 'walking wounded', once feeling their roots in the soil, throw away their crutches and dance.

Our primulars are sparkling for the third year running. Old-fashioned cottage garden flowers are a favourite. Look out for hollyhocks and foxgloves this summer. Those wonderful vermillion geraniums get potted up in November and spend the winter at Ullswater Court, the retirement home in

Glebelands Avenue. They come back late April for the summer and will flower for three or four years.

Although we were originally a U3A group (mainly retired people), we welcome anyone who would like to join us – no gardening experience needed. Our working parties take place as and when needed, maybe every two weeks at the height of the growing season. We meet mainly on a Thursday or Friday morning for two to three hours.

Helpers come when they can. It is very satisfying to make such a contribution to the community.

There's little that Ruth Harris would like to change about South Woodford. Ruth Adams reports

R

uth Harris has lived in South Woodford for 24 years, the last three in a bright flat in the High Road and previously in a house off Chelmsford Road.

I asked her what she likes about living locally.

"Well, I was brought up in the area and I like to kid myself that I live in the country. There's really a lot of green around though, including the forest. I like it that a well-attended local U3A group looks after the flower beds in the middle of George Lane and opposite Waitrose. It's easy to get up to the West End on the Tube too.

"Over the years, I've made a lot of good friends locally. I do think it's a friendly area. I don't drive and so I use the local facilities as much as I can, the restaurants and cinema, for example."

"I like to see varied types of housing around and the street

artworks – the metal ones opposite Waitrose – are great. To be honest, if I didn't like living in this area I'd move!"

I asked Ruth what she'd change in South Woodford if she had a magic wand.

"I'd be delighted with a swimming pool nearby. This part of the borough seems to have been forgotten. I'd also modify some of the bus routes just to suit me and I'd like a wider range of clothes shops suitable for my age group."

Woodford Memorial Hall As part of a heritage project, four rooms at Woodford Memorial Hall have been renamed after local heroes. Deborah Aloba announces the chosen four and takes a look at all those shortlisted

fter an invitation to the public to nominate and vote on the renaming of the four rooms, the winners were selected from this final list of candidates.

Revd Bob Birchnall: was the Rector of St Mary's Church in Woodford from 1964 to 1997, and was known for his inclusivity, humanity and compassion. After the disastrous church fire of 1969, he transferred services and parish activities to the Memorial Hall, which became in effect the church until the re-consecration of St Mary's in 1972. Born: 1918; died: 2002.

Sylvia Pankhurst: was resident of Woodford for 30 years. She was a campaigner in the suffragette movement, a writer and an artist.

In World War One her actions in setting up a factory and a restaurant in east London saved thousands of lives. Born: 1882; died: 1960.

Sir John and Thomas Roberts: the hall was donated to the community by local resident Sir John Roberts in memory of his brother Thomas. He was an entrepreneur and philanthropist, and also donated the Jubilee Hospital and the Working Mens' Club in Woodford Green. Born: 1835; died: 1917.

Sir Winston Churchill: was MP for Woodford for 40 years between 1924 and 1964. During this period, he was also the Prime Minister during World War Two and from 1951 to 1955. He was also an historian, an author and a painter.

Born: 1874; died: 1965.

Dr Kathleen Whitfield: was a local GP for 30 years and actively promoted cohesion within the community. For many years she was chair of the local Children's Society group, and was involved in improving the lot of children with special needs. Born: 1931; died: 2009.

Reginald Fowkes: was a photographer and the author of Woodford Then and Now. He left an invaluable legacy of photographs of the local area taken over a 50year period. In his younger days he was a member of the Auxiliary Fire Service, helping to protect the area.

Catherine Gladstone: was the wife of Prime Minister William Gladstone, who, having acquired Woodford Hall in 1866, set it up as a convalescent home for disadvantaged women and children. It was the only free convalescent home open at the time. Born: 1812; died: 1900.

Wynne Ludlow: initially worked as a primary school teacher, but was a talented painter and eventually gave up teaching to earn a living from her art. Wynne also ran art classes in the Memorial Hall for many years. Born: 1903; died: 1998.

Jean Morgans: was a resident of Woodford, a nursery assistant at Snaresbrook College, a trustee of the Memorial Hall, chair of the local Townswomen's Guild and a fundraiser for several charities.

Born: 1932; died: 2014.

y neighbour ordered a life-sized stag. On the internet. Bronze. With antlers. A birthday gift for her husband who 'had a thing about deer'. But naturally, he must not set eyes on it till the day itself.

So, might it be possible for the stag to be stowed discreetly in my garage for a few days?

I'm unusual, I know, but that's where I keep my car. So there wouldn't be enough room for a stag. In any case, for so regal a beast to be crammed in with rusty paint pots and general domestic overspill seemed unthinkable. We settled for my large downstairs bathroom.

It's the only room I have that catches western light and I thought the sunset glow would provide a fitting ambience. I pondered about the advisability of installing the spare toilet roll on one of the antlers. A sort of warning against a painful collision, in the manner of those red rags draped over protruding ladders on the backs of vans.

My son once announced that he had considerable respect for camels. He had recently visited Egypt. He recalled a somewhat sleepless night in the heat of his tent that caused him to wander out and sit companionably amongst the camels (their daytime transport). These animals exuded a sense of stillness and calm, a kind of wise, contented worldweariness. He liked their expression of superiority, even sang-froid. I don't know if he spotted that they had two rows of thick eyelashes to protect their eyes from desert dust (something else picked up on the internet).

For years there was a pet shop in George Lane – where the Treasure Chest is now. Do children have fewer pets these days? The dogs we see most frequently are those being patiently trained as guide

dogs for the blind. Their handlers can guarantee there will be a variety of obstacles for the dogs to learn how to avoid: groups of chatting locals; an occasional supermarket trolley. Dog owners are inevitably dog walkers. And they don't have the luxury of waiting for 'a break in the weather'.

So they meet each other when the rest of us are indoors with our slippers on. A sort of loosely defined fellowship, a canine club.

They greet each other more readily than other citizens, just as canal boaters do or joggers at dawn.

In India you share the pavements – and the roads, come to think of it – with goats, cows and monkeys.

Imagine that in George Lane!

But remember, it was only quite recently that the sight of cattle roaming up Grove Hill or down Bressey Grove was relatively common. There would be the entertaining sight of householders warding off cows with broomsticks, trying to salvage at least some of their roses from the munching herds. Now there are but few indications that it ever happened: the cattle grids and the occasional old street sign – the outline of a cow in a red triangle.

I needed to renew my passport last month. Remembering previous attempts to get even one acceptable shot in a photo booth (without feeding in a fortune) I booked an appointment with local photographer, Ghene Snowdon, in my own home. Several shots to choose from. "Do you get many requests to photograph animals?" I asked. "Mainly dogs in this area," she said. But she had a photographer friend in West London who was often engaged to record parrots, iguanas, snakes even. I felt we were definitely needing to step up a gear. But just as she was leaving she did mention that "guinea pigs were trending in Epping."

In the third of a series of articles charting a year-long heritage project that aims to document the history of Woodford Memorial Hall, Deborah Aloba, the hall's Heritage Engagement Officer, name-drops the music legends who have performed there and talks about the delays to repairing wartime damage

e are now almost halfway through the heritage project and the last couple of months have been particularly exciting.

Churchfields and Woodbridge High School have become involved, producing artwork in response to talks I have given to their students (such as the one shown here).

I have interviewed more people about their memories of using the hall or living in Woodford. It was fascinating talking to some of the Young Conservatives who used the hall for over 10 years during the late 1960s and early 1970s for meetings and pantomimes. Brenda, the founder of Old Time Musicals, who performed for many years at the hall during the 1980s and 1990s, sent me a wonderful writeup about her time here.

Patricia, who used to be an usher when the hall was a court, remembers the judge having to share the high bench with the hall's grand piano! I will also shortly be interviewing a gentleman who was a journalist for the Woodford Times during the 1960s. John Hutson, who has given dance lessons at the hall for over 40 years, is still in the news and was recently the subject of a spread in the Ilford Recorder.

I have had confirmation that not only did Small Faces and The Equals perform at the hall in the 1960s, but so did The Who and Van Morrison and Them, and I discovered that Lonnie Donegan (the 'King of Skiffle') used to live in

Woodford and young girls would stand outside his house hoping to see him.

I now have several volunteers who are assisting with the project, but if anyone else can help digitising and uploading the hall's minutes, I would be very grateful.

I can almost hear you saying: "Yes, yes, but what about the hall." Well, the hall continues to give up her secrets and I can confirm that at the start of World War Two there was an almost immediate impact on the hall and Lindal (which the trustees had purchased in the 1920s). In the minutes in September 1939, a Miss Lee, who ran a school from Lindal, announced that 'owing to the war' she was going to transfer her school to Devon under the Evacuation Orders as she was unable to keep up her payments for rent and taxes. On 14 June 1940 the Borough Council applied to rent Lindal for the Food Control Offices.

The trustees on 1 October 1940 considered the state of the hall, due to damage caused by a landmine in Stanley Road. The Honorary Secretary had to arrange for the skylight at the hall to be covered with rubber to keep out the rain, and arrangements had to be made for the roof and gutter to be repaired.

On 12 August 1941 Wanstead and Woodford Council took possession of the hall under the 1939 Defence Regulations for the purpose of installing a British restaurant.

This was eventually opened by Clementine Churchill. By 21 April 1942 the hall had been reserved

by Essex County Council as a rest centre for homeless persons.

It is clear from the minutes that by 12 March 1943 the hall and Lindal had sustained damage, and £97.12s.10d was recovered from the War Damage Commission at this time. The Food Control Office moved out of Lindal in 1943 and it was immediately let to the Air Training Cadet Corp. During this period the hall invested £500 in War Loans in response to the 'Wings for Victory' week.

A letter from a Mr J Tillett of the Divisional Education Office of the EEC was sent to the trustees in November 1947 asking if part of the hall could be used by Churchfields School. The response was 'no' as the hall was 'not in a fit condition for that purpose due to extensive repairs and redecoration that were necessary as a result of war damage and dilapidations'.

In 1947 the outstanding estimate for repairs to the hall from the War Office was £1,560.9s.1d.

Government Assessors were only willing to pay £1,005.10s.10d and this was eventually agreed in 1948.

Unfortunately, without the work being undertaken and the Ministry of Works providing a Licence of Fitness, it was difficult to let rooms

at the hall, and this situation was exacerbated by the radiators bursting in March 1948 due to a severe frost.

By June 1948 the hall had still not received a Licence for Work from the Government. On 6 July 1948 a letter was received from Churchill's secretary stating that, following Churchill's representations, the Minister of Works had agreed to grant a Licence and an initial £1,000 to enable the hall to be brought back into use. Repairs commenced in December 1948 and took two years to complete.

GM is practised in many countries around the world, including Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Nigeria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Pakistan and the UK. The communities that practise FGM consider it vital in protecting family honour, preserving tradition and ensuring a female's chastity.

It is seen as an act of love and cleanliness and is important in the preparation of a woman for marriage. The World Health Organization estimates that three million girls undergo this procedure in some form every year in Africa alone.

as self-appointed religious experts, and even by relatives. The practise will sometimes be carried out in a non-sterile environment using unsterilised blades or other sharp implements with no anaesthetic.

The health implications can be disastrous, affecting the victim mentally and physically. FGM can kill.

Please be warned that some readers may find the rest of this article disturbing.

Suspicions that a child is being prepared for a procedure may arise in a number of ways. Is the child from a community that's known to practise FGM? Is the child's family looking to take the child out of school for a long-term holiday or is the child going away, maybe to the parent's homeland, just at the start of the summer break? Are vaccinations being arranged? Is the child speaking of a ceremony that is about to take place that may be deemed special? Girls being prepared will be made to feel important and are sometimes given gifts, especially just before the summer break. Carrying out a procedure at this time of the year is common as it leaves time to heal before returning to school.

FGM comprises all procedures involving the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for nonmedical reasons. There are four common types, from a pricking of the clitoris or prepuce to fairly extensive narrowing of the virginal opening, and just to reiterate, all of these practices are being conducted in the UK today on girls as young as five or six years.

FGM is illegal and is considered to be child abuse in the UK. Under the FGM Act 2003, it is an offence in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for anyone, regardless of nationality or resident status, to perform FGM in the UK or overseas or to assist in the practice. Even if it takes place in a country where FGM is not an offence, anyone found guilty after returning to the UK can be jailed for up to 14 years or fined, or both.

The procedure is often carried out by non-medical practitioners, such

FGM is not an Islamic practise. FGM is not a religious requirement or obligation and is not a requirement for 'Sunna' (the traditional portion of Muslim law based on Muhammad's words or acts) in Islam. Globally, most of the Islamic world does not practise FGM.

Ahead of a presentation for the National Trust Woodford Green Centre in April, Judith Adams – the chair of the Friends of Epping Forest – looks at the history and future of this local community asset

M

any of us are quite familiar with – and fond of – Epping Forest and aspects of its long history. If the Forest could talk, it could tell us many stories. Perhaps you can imagine it as a Royal Hunting Forest, when hunting was pursued by the King and his supporters. Commoners had the right of cattle grazing, the right of wood (taking wood, not timber) and the right of pannage ('turning out' pigs to feed on acorns and beech mast).

While those days are a very long time ago, some of you may have visited the Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge at Chingford or remember seeing Forest cattle along Epping New Road or even in your garden, indicators of earlier Forest management.

Many aspects of the Forest we see today have their origins in the past.

The Forest ponds, enjoyed by many for fishing, walking and wildlife watching, are often the result of much earlier gravel diggings contributing to the early turnpike roads through the Forest. Many of the great veteran trees of the Forest show signs of earlier pollarding, providing wood for local people.

Those of you interested in heritage may be attracted by the earlier great houses in the area, including Wanstead House and Valentines Mansion. And whilst we may not travel to the Forest in a charabanc, High Beach still remains an important destination for visitors.

In the Loughton area I often walk along Clay Road, today a simple track through the Forest, but actually the remains of a road constructed to enable the building of a housing estate in the Forest in the 1860s. Fortunately, the Epping Forest Act of 1878 saved the Forest and this estate was never built. Otherwise, Loughton would have come right up to the Epping New Road.

Looking back, we are reminded of the many changes that have taken place in the Forest and how they may impact on the Forest we see today. The value of the Forest to the local communities has changed too.

During my talk in April, I'll share a little of the history of the Forest and provide some illustrations about how it has shaped the area we experience today. I will also explore the modern day value of the Forest along with the current pressures from traffic, housing developments, road schemes, recreation pressures and litter, not to mention climate change. What will be their combined impact on the Forest in the future? What should be our priorities for the Forest today to ensure it continues to be protected and valued well into the future?

Buy-to-give landlords James and Catherine Daniels recently bought, refurbished and subsequently rented out a flat in South Woodford. Nothing unusual about that – except they donated £20,000 to the Maria Falco Memorial Trust in the process. Ruth Adams meets the local property developers and philanthropists

ames and Catherine Daniels were idly watching the BBC1 TV programme Homes Under the Hammer when they heard about an individual who purchased, refurbished and sold a property, subsequently donating the increase in value to a charity close to his heart.

Having lived in South Woodford for the last 19 years and being property developers for the last 10, the couple, previously an accountant and a graphicdesigner-turned-teachingassistant wondered if they could do the same. During a six-month search for a suitable property, they applied their usual unique criteria, to buy within one mile of their South Woodford home: "We don't do travelling," said James – eventually purchasing an unloved but spacious two-bedroom flat in Malford Court via local estate agent Churchills.

It needed major renovation.

Clarity Financial Management arranged funding and in June 2015, the couple, along with their son Callum, daughter Alexandra and boyfriend Will, began the modernisation. This included clearing 'unsavoury' detritus from the flat, knocking down bowed walls, moving doorways, carrying a cast iron bath down two flights of stairs – "We wanted to have the bath renovated, but sadly, it

was uneconomical" – installing a fabulous new kitchen and stylish bathroom plus (carried out by professionals) renewing all the electrics, plumbing, windows and plastering.

Close friends kindly donated an oven, hob and dishwasher, and after Churchill Estates' new valuation in December 2015, James and Catherine donated £20,000 to the Maria Falco Memorial Trust. Unlike the developer on Homes under the Hammer though, James and Catherine eventually decided to rent out the home rather than sell it. "It was also our fastest project yet!" said Catherine enthusiastically.

During refurbishment, they were delighted with the support of Selco and Carpetworld in Walthamstow and the Chingford branches of Priority Plumbing and Magnet, who supplied items at very generous discounts as it was a project for charity.

The Maria Falco Memorial Trust, the lucky beneficiary of James and Catherine's philanthropy, raises money for clinical trials of breast cancer drugs run at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow and at St Margaret's Hospital in Epping. Maria, a mum of two, died of breast cancer in 2005 aged just 39, but had begun significant fundraising before she passed

away. The Trust, which includes Maria's parents amongst its trustees, continues the work in her honour, and in the last 10 years has raised over £440,000.

"James and I originally met Jean and Michael Falco [Maria's parents] at a charity golf day in aid of the Maria Falco Memorial Trust," said Catherine. "Sadly, my father died from bowel cancer five years ago and on meeting the Falcos we were attracted to this local charity. To me, cancer is cancer." Coincidentally, Jean and Michael live in the next road to James and Catherine in South Woodford. Maria's sister, Helena Williams, is the Trust's event manager and works in the research office at St Margaret's Hospital, Epping too.

Jean and Michael visited throughout the flat's renovations to see progress and told me a little more about the Maria Falco Memorial Trust. "The Trust raises money for groundbreaking clinical trials run by the Princess Alexandra Hospital and St Margaret's Hospital, where Maria was treated. As well as the trials, monies raised in memory of our daughter have helped to fund a Family History Clinic, a

Bone Health Clinic, a Reflexology Clinic and their FaB [fabulous and beautiful] programme – a wonderful monthly event where women undergoing treatment for breast cancer meet for coffee, have their nails done, get advice on wigs and other morale-boosting aspects of beauty, enabling them to feel less isolated."

The Trust's volunteer fundraisers and trustees work hard and administrative costs are kept to a minimum to ensure that maximum donations reach both hospitals. Jean Falco told me they are constantly looking to raise more money to fund further research, so readers are welcome to contact them if they'd like to help in any way. Jean went on to say: "In the past, we've organised sporting days out, cookery and culinary events, afternoon teas and our fabulous balls. TV star Bradley Walsh compered one for us. Our next fundraising event is on 13 May, a golf day at Chigwell Golf Club, and we are currently planning a Motown night. Details of all our events and how to buy tickets can be found on our website. here's something endlessly fascinating about watching vintage film clips of London: seeing how the familiar shops, streets and fashions have changed over the years and gaining an insight into how life was lived 20, 30 or even 100 years ago.

Film London, through London's Screen Archives, is proud to be offering local residents one such glimpse on 14 March with a specially-selected programme of footage to celebrate Women's History Month – a visit that's particularly fitting as Sylvia Pankhurst lived in Woodford Green for much of her life.

The screening forms part of Film London's work to unlock the capital's incredibly rich film heritage, helping to preserve and restore footage documenting London life, as well as getting thousands of Londoners to watch the historic films held by museums and archives across the capital.

This work forms part of a threeyear project called London: A Bigger Picture, and local residents are being asked to not just watch some of the footage we've already collected but also to contribute, take part and lend their support to the project. First and foremost, we're actively seeking local film footage – everything from old home movies and footage shot by film clubs through to locallyshot public and corporate films.

Whether your films feature personal stories – like the collection of family films donated by the Brookes family from Redbridge and viewable online via the BFI's Britain on Film website – or capture the momentous moments that helped shape our city, they ultimately help us build a bigger, better picture of how life was lived across London, so if you or a family member have a box of old films, then we definitely want to hear from you!

My second wish would be to reduce the amount of traffic during the evenings and Saturday daytimes, but this may be a wish too far."

A range of literary events will take place in April as part of Cityread London. This year has a riot theme and a play reading at Woodford Green Library will recall the events of 2011. Rhonda Brooks reports

ityread London is celebrated in April every year and asks London's residents, workers and visitors to pick up a book – the same book – and read it together.

This year's book is Ten Days by Gillian Slovo. South African-born Gillian lives in London and is the author of 13 novels, two plays and two biographies, including a family memoir, Every Secret Thing. Ten Days is a powerful and unputdownable thriller tracing a riot from its inception through to its impact one year on. The story takes an unflinching look at how lives are ruined and careers are made when small misjudgements have profound effects on frustrated communities and damaged individuals.

Taking Ten Days as a starting point (copies of which will be available from Redbridge Libraries), a programme of events will take place across London in libraries and other venues during April. In

Redbridge local libraries have a programme of events planned for Cityread, including a play-reading evening at Woodford Green Library based on Gillian's play The Riots.

In the absence of any full public inquiry, the Tricycle Theatre commissioned Gillian to create a piece on the events of the August 2011 riots and their possible causes. The Riots is a play created from spoken evidence, which explains and evaluates the events that took place. The play is written in the style of verbatim theatre using interviews from politicians, police, rioters and victims involved in the riots. "The play offers a bold panorama of civil disaffection… There is a density of detail that is compelling…

When you bring your new cat home, confine her to an area away from your resident cat, providing her with bedding, a litter tray and food and water, of course. This will give her time to get to know her new surroundings. Over the next few days, swap her bedding for the other cat’s bedding and stroke one cat – especially around the cheeks – and then go and stroke the other cat straight away. This will introduce their scents to each other. When the newcomer has settled, gradually introduce them face-to-face (be on hand to intervene if necessary).

Allow them time to get used to each other. Show them both a lot of love and affection and hopefully they will both become part of the family.

Women about town Erica Kelsey offers an introduction to the Bressey Townswomen's Guild and invites local ladies to join their friendly group. An invite is also extended to men for a special presentation in May

T

he Townswomen's Guild started in 1929. It followed the suffragists fighting for the right to vote, when it was felt there was a need for women to get together in urban areas to learn about citizenship.

Since then, the Townswomen's Guild has lobbied on national and local issues. Townswomen are encouraged to have ideas and views, develop new skills, campaign on various issues, support each other, make new friends and above all, have fun.

There are now approximately 30,000 members, 706 branches and 77 Federations throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Isle of Wight.

The Townswomen's Guild has continued to discuss matters of interest over the years and taken their thoughts to Parliament.

Examples of these mandates that have been discussed are grandparents' rights, the future of cheques, the abolition of single

supplements and fathers' rights, to name but a few.

Three branches of the Guild opened in South Woodford in 1953 and Bressey was one of them. We will be celebrating our 63rd birthday in April. Originally meeting at St Philip and St James Church, we now meet once a month in the Gwinnell Room in St Mary's Church.

Each month we have a speaker or perhaps a quiz or some other form of entertainment. Speakers cover a very wide range of interesting subjects and some are from the charity that we support for the year. spring into action It's time to shake off the winter blues and head out for a run, says Amanda Cannell

W

hether you're a seasoned runner or have just signed up for your first 5K, running outside can bring a new sense of freedom and wellbeing. Here are a few handy tips to help get you ready for some fun-packed spring and summer running. zz Wear the right footwear for you. With so many available, it's difficult to know where to start.

If in doubt, find a good local sports shop that will be able to explain the benefits and may get you on a treadmill to do a gait analysis.

Add reflective vests, bands or clothing for the dark evenings. zz Hydration is vital – aim for eight glasses of water during the day, but especially before and after a run.

zz Start slow. If you're just starting out, then try alternating a couple of minutes walking with running, which can be extended as you progress.

As you become more comfortable, think about developing a steady speed.

zz There are many apps and devices that can link to social media and share your running information. Use these to chat with friends or fellow runners for support and motivation. zz Lastly, book an event – now's the time. Have a target to aim for and the running world is your oyster. See you out there.

zz The weather's still changeable, so wear layers that can be adjusted while you're out.

Photography biography

M

y interest in photography started in the late 1970s when my dad's friend, an amateur photographer, came to our house to take some family portraits. I was so intrigued by his camera that it spurred me on to buy my first camera: a basic Yashica. In those days, photography was an expensive hobby, as it still is today, and I funded it with part-time work.

We used 35mm film, which took either 12, 24 or 36 exposures, with an ISO of either 100 or 200.

Whilst at sixth form college, I joined Forest Gate Camera Club, which had regular guest speakers.

One night, we had a couple who showed us projected 3D images of their trips. I still remember one 3D slide of a branch of a cactus tree in a desert – the branch projected out of the screen and everybody, including me, moved their heads to one side to avoid the protruding prickly branch. It was so lifelike we were all shocked. This experience led me to experiment with slide film and I even made my own small light box to view them.

In the fourth of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Amarjit Kudhail recalls how a family portrait session inspired a lifelong hobby After years of thinking about joining a camera club, some 18 months ago I joined Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society. The members were very welcoming. I started to participate in club events and quickly learned how much the digital photographic genre had moved on from the days of film, where my experience of processing was limited to cropping at the printing stage using an enlarger and counting the seconds, both to determine exposure and also while the paper was immersed in chemicals.

At the club, I have learned about photographic workflow and software programmes that are available to improve images. I have also discovered the advantages of shooting RAW files and the disadvantages of shooting JPEGs. My future aim is to make more time for this fascinating hobby and to become competent in using programmes like Adobe Lightroom for organising my images and Photoshop for enhancing them to a standard worthy of appreciation.
