Useful numbers in and around South Woodford…

It always intrigues me as to what issues have the ability to bring a community together. There are, of course, the well-versed campaigns that unite residents in a common goal, to protest against local parking regulations or inappropriate developments, for example. These types of issues tend to initially be fast-paced, with either a quick victory over the proposals or a subsequently long and drawn-out fight. Then there are the campaigns that run on a slow burn – campaigns that have a longterm objective but grab fewer headlines because of their ongoing nature and their often many strands of activities (neighbourhood watch schemes come to mind). There are two distinct communitybinding processes at work here: when a group takes up opposition against a proposed change in their area, it’s a reactive response; but when someone joins a neighbourhood watch group, for example, they are being proactive for their community. Both are equally commendable, and they are, of course, not mutually exclusive.

It’s hard to believe neighbourhood watch didn’t begin in the UK until 1982 – it’s one of those organisations we assume was always there in the background. And in many ways, it probably was, with the sound principles of improving community safety something I’m sure many living in pre-neighbourhood watch days also sought to achieve. Back then, we relied on good neighbours. Today, we have the infrastructure and the tools to magnify the effects of those good neighbours – community 2.0, perhaps.

It’s about that time now when many of us will be making our own proactive decisions for the year ahead. Perhaps you, too, will find room to add ‘good neighbour’ to your 2017 to-do list.

Residents are invited to help improve a local Green Flag park this January and throughout the year. “If you’ve overindulged at Christmas and are looking for some gentle exercise, why not get out in the fresh air and lend a hand at South Woodford’s awardwinning Elmhurst Gardens?” said Nature Conservation Ranger Julia Coulson. On 5 January from 10am to 1pm, Vision RCL’s Nature Conservation Team and the Friends of Elmhurst Gardens will be carrying out a range of jobs around the park, including

pruning the boundary hedges and tending to the ‘minibeast mansion’, which local schools enjoy exploring every year. The Friends of Elmhurst Gardens – which was formed in 2007 to improve and make best use of this green space in the middle of South Woodford – also run monthly volunteer days on the last Saturday of each month throughout the year. Beauty and the Beast: last chance to book tickets

Permission is being sought from the Secretary of State to introduce private rented property licensing in certain wards in Redbridge, including Roding and Church End.

Libraries across Redbridge will be taking part in the 17th annual National Storytelling Week, which runs from 28 January to 4 February and aims to promote the oral tradition of telling stories. Events will be run in combination with the free weekly Stories, Rhymes and Songs sessions for children under five at local libraries (South Woodford: 2pm to 2.30pm on Tuesdays and 10.30am to 11am on Fridays; Woodford Green: 2.30pm to 3pm on Tuesdays and 10.30am to 11am on Fridays).

Iain Duncan Smith MP has welcomed a change in Redbridge Council’s plans for a high-density development on the Station Estate. “Whilst we are pleased that so far the council is moving in the right direction, it remains clear that local people do not want the council to build a tall building on this site. We are currently seeking greater clarification on the council’s intentions… The residents and I will continue to hold the council to account,” said the Chingford and Woodford Green MP.

The opening performance of Woodford Pantomime’s production of Beauty and the Beast will take place on 2 January at the Sir James Hawkey Hall in Woodford Green, with shows running until 15 January (tickets: £13.50). Ornithologist and television presenter Mike Dilger, who is best known for being the wildlife reporter on the BBC’s The One Show, will be giving a talk to the North East London Local Group of the RSPB in February. “[Mike]… will describe to us, in his usual dynamic way, what 12 familiar birds are doing at each month of the year. A community fundraiser for Haven House Children’s Hospice will be discussing the work of the Woodford Green charity at a Wanstead Park Women’s Club event in January. “Since 2003, Haven House Children’s Hospice has provided specialist care for over 650 families with children who have life-limiting and lifethreatening conditions,” said Matt Charlton, who has worked at Haven House for two-and-ahalf years, predominately liaising with schools, youth groups and community groups. “We provide a range of services to families to support them through the most difficult circumstances imaginable. These include planned respite… and endof-life care”. The talk will take place from 8pm on 16 January at Aldersbrook Bowls Club (visitors: £2; booking required).

Former director of music returns for concert

A former director of music at St Mary’s Church will be returning to the South Woodford venue in January under his current role as choirmaster of the choristers of Temple Church, who will be giving a concert of sacred and secular music. According to Anita Datta, the church’s current director of music, Roger Sayer – who was at St Mary’s from 1981 to 1989 – was ‘extremely popular during his time here’.

The performance, which will take place on 21 January from 7pm (adults: £10, under-12s: £7), will include Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols. Under Roger’s direction, the Temple Church Choir has performed live on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, the Cadogan Hall, in Washington DC and Holland. The Local Government Boundary Commission forCranbrook England has published its final recommendations Wanstead Parkfor new ward boundaries in Redbridge. The proposals – which must now be approved by parliament before being implemented at the local elections in 2018 – will see the removal of the current Church End, Roding, Snaresbrook and Wanstead wards and the creation of Churchfields, South Woodford, Wanstead Village and Wanstead Park wards. The commission has recommended that the borough should continue to be served by 63 councillors, with 19 three-member wards and three two-member wards, in order to deliver ‘electoral equality for voters’ and promote ‘effective local government’. The proposals followed an eight-week public consultation on the draft plans.

Redbridge Council is inviting suggestions on how a local project fund should be spent. Fifteen per cent of the Community Infrastructure Levy – which is collected from developers in the borough – is allocated to local projects and residents are encouraged to put forward ideas for enhancements they would like to see. A conversation club for those whose first language is not English is to be launched at South Woodford Library. The UK’s oldest music and drama festival will return to St Mary’s Church in South Woodford and Forest School in Snaresbrook in February. The Stratford and East London Music Festival, which was founded in 1882, used to be held at venues in Stratford but moved to South Woodford 15 years ago and to Forest School in 2013. any of you will have been following the Redbridge ward boundary changes proposed by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. It has been confirmed that the current Church End, Roding, Snaresbrook and Wanstead wards will no longer exist and there will be four new ones – Churchfields, South Woodford, Wanstead Village and Wanstead Park – in the next local elections in 2018.

Whatever the merits and demerits are of the proposal, it is important to remember that nothing changes as far as Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) is concerned. Some people have voiced their own concerns that they will no longer part of their original wards, but from our perspective the current set-up and organisation will continue as before.

It is also worthy to note that NHW works in unison; boundary wards are as irrelevant to us as they are to criminal activity.

Indeed, crime solving has been more successful through collaboration with the Safer

It is with this principle in mind that NHW needs to focus on the whole of the borough and not just specific wards. One recent initiative developed to achieve this has been Online Watch Link (OWL). This service helps to keep communities safe and reduce crime and keeps people informed of what is going on locally. Crime is often lower where there are active NHW groups and the Metropolitan Police actively supports this, which makes Redbridge a more hostile environment for criminals and a safer place for residents and businesses. We do recognise that not everyone likes or has access to the internet and email, so we also have regular ward panel meetings to discuss various issues face to face.

As a final note, there was an article in the Evening Standard (10 November 2016) stating that police today call on more Londoners to befriend their neighbours in a bid to tackle a rise in burglary, according to the ‘Burglary Britain’ study conducted by home technology firm Nest. It found that 76% of Londoners do not belong to

any NHW group. Of these, more than 30% said it was because they did not know their neighbours. It also found that 58% of Londoners had been victims of break-ins and that 44% would join such a scheme if it were digital. According to Chief Superintendent Seam Wilson, Scotland Yard’s lead for burglary: “…the neighbourhood watch is an excellent vehicle for providing a framework in which people are kept up to date with time frames, what is actually happening in their area and what to look out for. So, if you have groups targeting the elderly, for example, or groups who are targeting arts and antiques or family jewellery, it just gives you a network. The message is: look after your communities, look after each other.”

irected by Jane Gull, My Feral Heart is a film about Luke – an independent young man with Down’s syndrome played

by Steven Brandon – who stumbles upon a wild and life-changing friendship when a sudden bereavement throws him into a daunting new environment. The film was nominated for three awards at last year’s British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).

What are your connections to South Woodford?

I moved to the area last year.

How did you get into filmmaking?

I have been directing for about 10 years. Prior to that, I was a professional dancer, choreographer and actress. I still do a bit of acting, but I’m mainly concentrating on directing now.

I understand you have done some voluntary work at South Woodford’s Oxfam shop. A bit of a contrast to making films?

I would like to do more but unfortunately, haven’t had much spare time. Steaming the clothes is very therapeutic, and the staff are lovely. John [the manager] does a fantastic job and he has an incredible energy.

Can you give us some insight into the film’s time frame?

The script development and pre-production took almost two years. We shot in November 2014 with some pick-ups in February 2015. We shot the film in 21 days and post-production took about eight months.

How did you go about casting Steven in the film?

I searched the country looking for an actor to play Luke. I discovered Steven at the Mushroom Theatre Company in Rayleigh, Essex.

The film has been nominated for and won multiple awards.

What are your highlights?

Our world premiere at Cinequest was a highlight as it was our first public screening. We won the audience award for best feature.

I recently visited Moscow, where we won best feature film and best actor. That was an amazing experience. I have also just returned from Belfast where we presented the film to a packed audience.

What other projects are you working on now?

I have a couple of feature films in development.

What advice would you offer aspiring filmmakers?

Keep focused and don’t give up.

Go to the cinema and support British films.

What are your hopes for 2017?

To have my next film in production.

What are your New Year’s resolutions?

No time wasting.

What do you think was the best film of 2016 (apart from yours)?

I, Daniel Blake.

What actor would you most like to work with?

Benicio Del Toro.

here’s nothing wrong or difficult about vegetarianism. It is just as simple to cook with vegetables as it is with meat or fish. At the end of the day, it’s just food and it’s up to you to make it tasty. Here are my seven tips to help you take the jump into a meatless world.

Woodford Green resident Isatu Harrison is a fashion designer who escaped civil war in her native Sierra Leone to launch a fashion label in the UK. Here she talks about African ties and tie-dyeing

I

was born on 31 August 1979 in the eastern town of Kono, Sierra Leone. I am the first of four children raised by a single mum and my school years were spent in Sierra Leone, including a boarding school in Kono. The civil war (1991–2002) forced my whole family to move to the capital, Freetown.

I grew up watching Mum design outfits for herself but also for other people who loved her tiedyed fashion. As a single mum, this was how she made a living and raised a family in a country with no welfare support system.

As a youngster, I helped my mum, who I greatly admire since, in her day, she was a trendsetter.

She remains my role model and is by far my biggest influence. She was passionate about ensuring I had an education and career.

I arrived in the UK in 2001 where I was able to complete my college studies. I then held a number of management roles in HR within private and public sectors, including Transport for London.

I met my husband through work and we now have a beautiful daughter, Izellah, who has a budding career in modelling. Her ebullient personality keeps me smiling and she takes after me

as a confident fashionista in her own right.

After gaining experience in a number of business sectors, I reinvested the money generated from these activities into a new initiative focused on fashion.

I have a role to play in the economic development of my continent…

Its unique selling point is the careful interweaving of two cultural traditions: one British, the other influenced by my homeland.

Over the years, I have been experimenting with fashion design and making my own clothes. They caught peoples’ eyes and friends and family kept asking where they could buy

them. This led me to concentrate on launching my own fashion label – Izelia (derived from my daughter’s name) – at Africa Fashion Week in August 2014.

My aim is to bring striking and colourful African tie-dye and prints to the high street, allowing the style conscious to sprinkle their wardrobe with up-to-the-minute, multiethnic flair. I am also actively involved in organising training programmes and apprenticeship opportunities for immigrants and first-generation citizens in fashion design.

Whilst the brand is becoming well entrenched in the UK, as an African, I feel I have a role to play in the economic

development of my continent.

Through Izelia, I wish to invest long-term in Sierra Leone’s private sector and I am interested in developing manufacturing, as well as production factories, and establishing additional outlets in Africa. I am proud to be among a growing crop of entrepreneurs who are creating employment opportunities and bringing economic growth to our countries.

hile working on cruise ships I spoke to a young Scottish singer who asked if I had ever done a show in a home for the elderly.

I said I hadn’t but perhaps I would give it a try sometime.

Three months later, I got a call from a fellow ‘muso’ who asked if I could do a gig for him in a residents’ home in Wanstead.

It was for the next day and as I wasn’t doing anything and live nearby in South Woodford, I thought I’d do it.

On arrival at the home, I was taken into a fairly crowded room. All were waiting with keen anticipation. As I was setting up I was approached by an elderly female resident who, as though on cue, asked me: “What’s your name?” I said: “Richard.” She said loudly: “Pardon?” I shouted: “Richard!” “What’s your second name?” “Auty.” “Pardon?” she yelled. “Auty,” I bellowed, “Richard Auty!” “Never heard of you,” she cackled triumphantly!

About a year ago I got another call from a residents’ home in Walthamstow, asking me if I could come and entertain on a lady’s 103rd birthday. I was delighted to oblige and at the end of my show a reporter and a photographer from the local newspaper came forward and the photographer proceeded to take numerous pictures. The old lady was sitting very patiently in her chair throughout all this and having answered quite a few, many inane, questions from the reporter, I could see that she’d had enough. When he asked her: “What does it feel like to be 103?”

she replied: “I don’t know, I’ve never been 103 before!”

In residents’ homes, there are usually between 25 and 80 residents. They are mainly elderly and of mixed sexes. Some of them have varying stages of dementia. Most of them do like music. In my show I sing to backing tracks and don’t use the piano any more. I have found that they seem to lose interest when I just sing songs to them so I wear different props, including a Frank Sinatra hat and an Elvis wig. They get bored when there are too many ballads so I pick songs that are fairly up-tempo or amusing.

I also play the trumpet a couple of times to vary the programme and do my crazy dancing, which involves me hopping up and down and acting the goat. At one of my gigs recently I jumped up in the air and landed awkwardly on my ankle, spraining it quite badly. I had another gig the next day in another home and when I arrived I spoke to the manager and told him what had happened and that I couldn’t do my dancing. “Never mind,” he said, “just do your singing.” Well, I started off and after singing a few songs I could see that I wasn’t getting any feedback from my audience. In fact, a couple of them had nodded off! In desperation, I went around the room pulling silly faces at them and waving my arms round and round like a windmill. At the end of the show, one of the residents said to me: “You should be inside here with us!” The final accolade, I suppose.

New Year’s Yoga!

Ruth Adams talks to local choir leader Jenny Ewington about the benefits of learning to sing

J

enny Ewington, a highly experienced singing teacher, runs Modality Choir in South Woodford.

The youth choir began in 2011 and the adult choir in 2015. Both use a room at St Mary’s Church (non-religious) and an eclectic range of song styles is taught: modern, jazz, musical theatre, folk and classical. Modality gives regular performances, mostly for charities, such as Centrepoint, a young person’s homeless organisation. They also perform at weddings, prestigious dinners in London’s Painters’ Hall and Guildhall, and participate in the annual Stratford and East London Musical Festival.

Jenny explained that group singing gives adolescents a safe place to express themselves.

Your voice is your instrument and good posture aids good singing.” She believes that ‘singing is a necessity, not just nice to have’. She even writes many musical arrangements for the choir’s pieces so they have their own unique style.

I

began working for myself when I left a job that required too much travelling.

I looked for another employed role that was four days a week as I wanted to spend time with my young son, but they were few and far between. So, I took the plunge and decided to work for myself.

The most difficult aspect of working for myself is the ‘feast or famine’ nature…

My background is in marketing, so I set myself up as a marketing consultant. Initially, I was quite open-minded about what sort of clients I could work with, but over the years I have narrowed my focus to working with professional membership bodies, helping them to communicate with their members. A lot of my work comes from recommendations, but I also do put effort into marketing myself – I need to do as I say!

Working for yourself can be flexible and it is possible to make a decent living. There are generally no office politics and you should be able to avoid the daily commute on the crowded Central Line, which is a bonus.

However, it can be lonely if you work on projects alone. Also, whilst you might not have a boss, you could, in fact, have multiple ‘managers’ (or rather clients that are paying your bills) depending on how many projects you are working on at one time, which can be challenging. I think the most challenging aspect of working for myself is the ‘feast

or famine’ nature. I either find myself overwhelmed with work or worrying where the next project is going to come from.

I was interested in connecting with other local creative business owners, so I decided to start a mastermind group. This is where entrepreneurs get together to share the challenges and joys of working for themselves in a structured way. In the first few sessions, our group has been looking at our plans for 2017. Currently, we have a writer, a photographer, a bridal accessories maker, a social media manager and another marketing consultant involved. We are probably at capacity now, but if you are interested in taking part, do get in touch.

My advice to any local residents wanting to go it alone are: zz Do your research – what sort of business will you run? Who will be your customers? zz Develop a plan, including finances. zz Save up money to see you through the start-up phase. zz Build your network.

There are lots of resources available online and offline. Redbridge Council has an Enterprise Hub (swvg.co/eh), which offers free advice and training. I also really like Enterprise Nation (swvg.co/en) and the Freelance Lifestyle (swvg.co/fl) website and blog.

ohn Gibbs has been teaching the martial art of tae kwon do to adults and children for almost 18 years in South Woodford’s Memorial Hall, next to St Mary’s Church.

Drawing on his experience, John told me: “For children, learning tae kwon do gives them confidence and an experience of controlled fun.

Increasingly, children are not physical from an early age, due to playing with electronic gadgets. Here’s a chance for them to be physical, to reach goals (through a series of gradings) and to see their own progression. They learn to control their bodies, feel and look more confident and even carry themselves better.

It’s visual as well as mental.

Some South Woodford scribbles from DD, our resident diarist, commentator and observer of all things local

I

usually take my first cup of tea at about six o’clock in the morning. I drink it, slowly and appreciatively, from a mug bearing the imprint of two small feet in blue paint. This is naturally a contemplative sort of hour: I sometimes find myself picturing my son or my daughter-in-law (or possibly, of necessity, both) dipping the wriggling toes of my then eight-week-old granddaughter into a sort of artist’s colour palette and pressing them purposefully onto the prefired mug to make a ‘digital recording’ for posterity. A good pair of feet and a good cup of tea: two of life’s unpretentious and largely unsung blessings (we can home in on coffee another time). My morning mug is heavy and large and pink and pottery-thick. I relish its warmth in both hands while revisiting the last few cryptic clues that had eluded me the night before.

can you bear to let anyone touch your feet!” I’m an ardent fan.

The technique dates back to ancient Egypt and China (where no doubt it was accompanied by the tranquil, elegant ‘ceremony of the tea’). For a very different experience, I called into One Stop Nails quite recently to sample a back massage in one of their huge armchairs while, simultaneously, my feet were lowered into warm water, swaddled in soft towels and smoothed and buffed and creamed and, well, the whole pampering programme that ensures a smiling spring in your step when you emerge. “A naughty treat.”

Speaking of which: I have never taken (or been taken to)

afternoon tea at the Ritz, but I was invited once to such a treat at the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne. If you are familiar with it, you will know that the tearoom is in the form of a vast, soaring atrium four storeys high under a distant, domed glass ceiling with sky view. My hostess awaited me. It was just as well I didn’t gasp, naively, at the unfamiliar grandeur. “Such a nice place for tea,“ she said in greeting. “I find it so cosy”.

I think I’ve exhausted my subject.

I’ll put my feet up and get the kettle on.

PS. Does anybody remember a time when David Anthony was not trading in ‘fashion footwear’ on George Lane? Now that is a nice place for shoes. And it is definitely cosy, too.

We will remember Paul O

n a cold and wet morning in November we visited the military cemetery in Hebuterne, northern France, one of many sites of trench warfare on the Western Front in 1916.

Some older readers may remember Dr David Smith in Maybank Road (Mulberry Way) in the 1950s and his dentist brother Stephen in Glebelands Avenue. They were siblings in a family of 13, 11 surviving infancy.

The eldest brother Paul was killed on the Western Front in 1916 when Stephen was only six years old. One hundred years on, during Remembrance Week last November, a group of nine of us, nephews and nieces of Paul, went to visit the military cemetery in Hebuterne. We believe we are the first of his family to visit the grave after all these years. Why?

South Woodford resident Tim Smith grew up knowing very little about his Uncle Paul. He and his family have now unravelled Paul’s story, culminating in a visit to his war grave in France last November

also falsifying his name! Instead of Paul Rudolph, he enlisted as Percy Randolph, conveniently using the same initials. He died under shellfire in May 1916, just days before the first Battle of the Somme and four months before his 19th birthday.

As his nieces and nephews, we heard little of this story when we were younger – maybe because there was an element of disgrace felt by his parents. We believe they were both strong Christian pacifists, and his mother had German blood, so the very idea of their eldest son falsifying

Perhaps that explains why we learned little of this story as children – the pain was just too great to talk about…

The fascinating story is that Paul, then living in Malmesbury House, Malmesbury Road, South Woodford, and like tens of thousands of others, volunteered for service in 1914 declaring himself to be 19 years old when in fact, he was only 17. He was discharged after failure to attend a parade and declared ‘unlikely to be an efficient soldier’.

Maybe this was to deal with the discovery of his immaturity politely. However, undeterred, he promptly proceeded to enlist with another regiment, again falsifying his age, but this time

his age and his name to fight Germany may have been too much for them. Rather than expressing pride in their son’s valour, maybe they were more ashamed and hence reticent to talk about it. Perhaps that explains why we learned little of this story as children – the pain was just too great to talk about. None of us knows exactly how we would cope if our children enlisted illegally, however wellintentioned and concerned they were for national security.

With the help of research published in the Old Bancroftian (Paul had been a pupil at Bancroft’s School for two years) and by other family members, we were able to unravel this story.

The digitised archive material from the Forces War Records was also a great source. Although the formal War Office request for instructions as to his Star medal was sent to the right father (then in Hermon Hill), the evidence of Paul’s alias had been strong but circumstantial. The local paper obituary picture was also the right one! The final evidence we found that fully proved the story was the Effects List, which shows a war gratuity of £3.6s.4d for ‘Percy Randolph, alias Paul Rudolph Smith’, dated June 1919.

So, on a cold and wet morning in November, we visited the military cemetery, just a few hundred yards from the trench where Paul fell victim to enemy fire. There we quietly paused at his grave, laid a wreath and together read some war poems and, of course, ended with: “We will remember them… we will remember Paul.” He died 25 years before we were born, but we now feel we truly knew him, albeit in his death.

Photography biography

I

started taking photos on my travels as a student to cities in Europe and enjoyed capturing the modern buildings. I also visited New York and Boston and very much enjoyed seeing the skyscrapers and trying to capture them in the viewfinder.

After a foundation course, I went to art college to do a furniture design degree. I didn’t really use photography to help with my designs, but I think if we were in the digital age then as we are now, then it would have been very useful. My father ran an electrical and photographic shop, which gave me the chance to experiment with black and white printing.

my company was making. It was always very disappointing when the photos came back, as the interior shots were very difficult to light properly. So it was an exciting time when we invested in one of the first digital cameras, which had a wide angle lens and just 2.3 million pixels.

This renewed my enthusiasm to take photos because of the instant feedback – I could see if the lighting needed altering there and then. So began a steep learning curve! Software at the time was not very userfriendly and it was complicated to achieve a relatively simple result. I started to take many more photos and experiment. I progressed to a Nikon DSLR quite quickly and started to collect a range of lenses.

After finishing my degree, apart from holiday photography, I went for a long time without using my camera until I needed to make a record of the furniture

a challenge of entering the competitions. My interests have since become more wideranging and I am now drawn to areas such as architecture, landscapes and seascapes, night photography and action (inspired by my two sons).

As I have learnt how to use Adobe Photoshop, I now enjoy altering some shots to suit the mood or atmosphere I was attracted to at the time of taking the photo.

As a member of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, I very much look forward to the interesting talks and demos that are arranged each month and the casual discussions of our different techniques and shooting styles.

Seeing what other members and local clubs are exhibiting is probably the most helpful type of encouragement to keep me trying out new techniques and styles.
