Southwest School of Art is committed to supporting access to a high-quality art instruction for the youth of San Antonio and this spring we are excited to offer a selection of in-person classes for young artists. Young Artist Programs will offer tuition-based Youth Art Studios in-person and will offer our beloved and long-standing family focused program, Saturday Morning Discovery, in a new, virtual, and free format. Youth Art Studios will focus on ages 8-18 and offer classes in a variety of mediums and techniques for students to explore. These classes will be tuition based. All courses will be in-person classes and students will be required to follow safety guidelines set forth by SSA Guidelines to Reopening Campus policies. We will also offer a weeklong Spring Break Camp for ages 11-14 in March. You can find more information about offerings on page 9. Saturday Morning Discovery will be offered in the form of pre-recorded videos. Young artists and families will have the chance to follow along with some of our SMD artist instructors to learn how to make a variety of unique and interesting art pieces. While this program will continue to be free, registration is required to communicate with participants.


Saturday Morning Discovery will continue to be free to the public and participants can register for multiple spring sessions. Each SMD session will be comprised of 2 Saturdays worth of videos. Each Saturday, families will receive links to 3 brand new art making videos led by SMD artist instructors. SMD videos will be on a private page on YouTube. Participants will be e-mailed a recommended supply list for their SMD session up to a week prior to their first session, however many of the activities can be done with items found around the house. Supplies are not provided for this program. Participants may register for as many SMD sessions as they would like.

We are working on some fun classes for your young artists' summer break! Our camp will be a hybrid of on-campus and virtual learning so that we can accommodate all families who want creativity to be a part of their students’ lives. Schedule of class will be released in early March. Young Artists Programs Studio Classes require students to wear a mask, practice social distancing, and follow the SSA’s Guidelines to Reopening Campus.

This short and fun workshop is a great starting point for young artists to explore drawing for fun through their imagination and creativity. Young artists will explore drawing techniques, methods, and mediums in this two-session workshop and will leave with their own unique drawings.

Superheroes, storytelling, and illustration are the key to this two-session workshop. Exploring the basics of popular four–panel comic, students will create charming tales and gain the skills to create imaginative journeys.

In this fun class, students will learn how to create one-of-a-kind clay monsters! Students will use their imagination to develop and design a fun monster sculpture using pinch and coil techniques. This two–part class will consist of building, firing, and painting creations with acrylic paint.

Aboriginal Art has survived for thousands of years and continues to be one of the oldest art forms practiced today. In this workshop, explore symbols and patterns used for the communication of life, food, and customs. Create work using drawing and painting in this two–session workshop.

Each face is unique and beautiful. Learn how to capture yours using charcoal, ink, and drawing gestures in this two–session workshop. Students will be introduced to the basic anatomy of the human face as well as several techniques to capture the human face through drawing.

Try your hand at drawing in this exploratory two session workshop! Delve into and observe drawing techniques in the studio and then test out ideas. Use personal items to draw from and explore a variety of mediums, expressions, and techniques. Students will be encouraged to get in the habit of drawing as much as they can in and outside of class. Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s your own comic book superhero! Hone your storytelling by utilizing the foundations of comics to develop engaging characters, designs, and captivating pages that will bring narrations to life and create fascinating short comics.

Exploration of classical painting techniques will be the focus of this four-session course. Learn the basics of painting, underpainting, and working with a limited palette. Glaze thin layers of paint to create a realistic painting by controlling brushes and other art making tools.

Learn how to create the most familiar of ceramic wares in this class, the mug! Utilizing hand building techniques learn how to construct the body and handle of a unique mug. Add texture and flare by learning new techniques and how to properly glaze the final piece.

Focus on simple color mixing with a limited palette in this course to develop portrait painting skills. Learn to look at the human face, layer color, and reproduce stunning results by using classical painting techniques.

7901 | Spring Break Camp: Colossal Clay Creations Sarah Shore

An intensive week-long DIY movie making camp is the focus of this course with B-Movie Cinema Club teaching artist, Ramon Munoz. Learn how to write, direct, act, design and edit an original film during the week. Take time to watch and critique famous films and learn from directors and writers across several genres. Students will create a collaborative film in this class which will be premiered on SSA’s YouTube channel! This camp is a full day camp, students will be responsible for bringing their own lunch and snacks.

Experience a variety of aspects of clay making in this weeklong camp. Create your own hand-built pottery and make a unique 3-D sculpture. Acquire techniques and skills for sculpting and manipulating clay with pinch, coiling and slap techniques. All finished pieces will be glazed and fired to be picked up at a later date. This camp is a full day camp, students will be responsible for bringing their own lunch and snacks.

Students with previous painting experience will learn advanced painting techniques focused on new types of brushwork and color palettes. Emphasis will be placed on students finding their own artistic vision in this course.

Learn the basic skills of wheel throwing—centering, opening, and pulling vessels—followed by learning to form bowls and cylinders. Learn how to evaluate form and function while working with low-fire clay and glazes to create a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork.

Create unique drawings using colored pencils in this course by learning how to build tones and color values and create enticing compositions. Explore incorporating other media such as pen & ink, create a final piece displayed on pop-up pages manipulated by hand.

This intensive two-weekend workshop will delve into the artist’s process of concept to final piece. Learn how to create successful illustrations by starting with idea clouds, thumbnail sketches, reference photos, value studies, color studies, and finally a completed illustration. Course is ideal for students looking to improve their artistic process or learn how to better utilize their studio time.

Elizabeth Ann Davila received a BFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio and an Associate Degree in Sequential Arts. She is a graphic designer, sequential artist, and creative director. She has taught at Southwest School of Art since 2017. Juan de Dios Mora is a printmaker, painter, and art instructor. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He has been part of solo exhibitions across Texas, as well as juried exhibitions in museums and galleries both nationally and internationally (like Mexico and Japan). Recently his prints have been acquired by The Smithsonian America Art Museum. Ed Escobedo holds a BFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a concentration in ceramics and sculpture. He teaches ceramics in the Southwest School of Art’s Young Artist Program as well as the Adult Community Classes. He has shown in numerous local and national exhibitions including the Clay Center of New Orleans and the Jansen Art Center in Washington. Sarah Fox is an artist, mother, educator, and arts organizer, living and working in San Antonio, TX. She received her MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio and has taught drawing, color theory, art appreciation and conceptual practices classes at a college level at UTSA, Texas State University, and Texas A&M, San Antonio. Working with young artists is her passion and she has taught at both SSA and Bluestar Contemporary for 7 years. Jenny Giuffrida is an art educator who is pursuing a certificate in teaching K-12. She has been an artist educator at Southwest School of Art in various youth programs such as the Mobile Artist Program, Saturday Morning Discovery, and Summer Art Studios. She is currently teaching in SAISD and a featured artist in the digital Saturday Morning Discovery program.

Ramon Muñoz, Young Artist Program Coordinator began teaching with the SSA’s Mobile Arts Program in 2011; he is currently overseeing multiple projects on campus and with community partners. He is the brainchild behind the B-Movie Cinema Club which focuses on the artful aspects of DIY movie making with youth. Muñoz earned his BFA from University of Texas at San Antonio. Theresa Newsome is an interdisciplinary photographer whose work explores the concepts of racial identity, history, and gender. She explores significant instances of African American history and its underlying effects on contemporary black culture. Her work has been shown throughout the U.S. and has been featured in the 2019 PhotoSeptiembre Photography Festival. Her research and work have been published in the 2018 edition of Focal Plane Magazine, Photo Emphasis, and Dallas Voyage Magazine. She currently works as an artist and lecturer in San Antonio, TX. Tim Olson is an artist living and working in San Antonio, TX. He received his BFA in visual arts with an emphasis in painting and drawing from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN. He has also held teaching certifications in art, special education, and science. Although familiar with many medium, he currently works primarily as a mixed media sketch artist and portrait artist. Regina Sanders, Art Education Specialist, holds an Associate Degree in Fine Arts and Illustration/Fashion from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Samuel Velasquez was born and raised on the south side of San Antonio, TX. He attended Palo Alto College where he discovered his love of painting and ultimately received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio. His interest in mythological imagery and the love of animals has shaped his current work. He has shown regionally in numerous group and solo exhibitions and teaches in the Adult Community Class program at Southwest School of Art. YAP SPRING 2021 | 12
