Dear friends, As we emerge from our shuttered lives during the height of the pandemic, it is my hope that you and yours are healthy and as free of related stresses as possible. At Southwest School of Art, we are over the moon about holding the 2021 commencement ceremony in person in the McNutt Gardens with friends and family of the twelve graduating seniors. That these resourceful students made it successfully through a challenging year on campus is a testament to the grit and passion of both students and faculty. Additionally, classes for adults and youth partially returned to campus as of the fall term, and enrollment numbers for the summer term are growing. It is as if a shriveled plant has sprung to life! We are grateful for the steady individual gifts, the emergency foundation grants, the Paycheck Protection Plan loan, as well as demonstrations of support from the many who have been behind us in other ways. I particularly applaud the tenacity and ingenuity of our board, staff, and faculty. Perhaps even more important in the long run, is our new-found appreciation for who are and what is contributed by “essential workers,” how bias affects our society, and how our economic health is directly related to our physical health – collectively and individually. Among the ruins of the pandemic, we experienced moments of profound insight, collaboration, and empathy. As an institution, we are doubling down on equity, resiliency, perseverance – and, of course, creativity! Julian Simon said that “imagination is the ultimate renewable resource.” Without it we cannot survive a pandemic or any other crisis. With it, we have the capacity to not only solve problems, but to live meaningful lives. I look forward to seeing activity return to campus and to seeing you in person soon!

SSA PRESIDENT SELECTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS COMMITTEE SSA President Paula Owen recently served on a committee, appointed by the governor, to select the Texas State Artists including the Texas Poet Laureate, Musician, and Visual Artists for 2021 and 2022. Texas State Artists represent the best of Texas’ rich and diverse artistic community. The designation is the state’s highest recognition for excellence in the arts

SOUTHWEST SCHOOL OF ART ANNOUNCES NASAD ASSOCIATE ACCREDITATION Southwest School of Art (SSA) was pleased to receive word in November that it has been awarded associate accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The NASAD Commission informed SSA of the status following a self-study and peer review process. “To see Southwest School of Art as an accredited institution on the website of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design is a testament to the talent and commitment of our faculty, staff, and board, as well as to the many stakeholders who have supported us since 1965,” said Southwest School of Art President Paula Owen. “This validation will also serve current and former students as they build their careers and reinforce the remarkable reputation and values of SSA.” The National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges, and universities with approximately 363 accredited institutional members. It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials for art and design and art/design-related disciplines and provides assistance to institutions and individuals engaged in artistic, scholarly, educational, and other art/design-related endeavors. 2

A HEART FOR GIVING A huge thanks to 13-year-old Aarav Gedala, son of SSA alumna Lata Gedala '19, for his big heart and creative talent. Aarav made 220 cards out of plant fibers which he then painted and sold door-to-door making $1100. He presented a check for $600 to Southwest School of Art’s President Paula Owen from his proceeds. The remainder was spent to better the lives of residents of Etta Senior Living in Shavano Park through the purchase of a glider chair, bird feeder, planters, magazine subscriptions, and books. SSA REPRESENTATIVES SERVE ON PANEL Young Artist’s Program Director Patricia Morales and Chair of Printmaking/Paper Margaret Craig were selected to participate as panelists on the City's Arts and Culture Department’s Arts Funding Committee of the San Antonio Arts Commission. Panelists were chosen to evaluate Individual Artists Grant applications for the Department of Arts & Culture. Patricia will serve on the Multi-Disciplinary Panel and Margaret will serve on the Media Panel.

Esme Araiza has joined the SSA community as Marketing Manager. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies from UT Austin and a Master of Science in Marketing from UT Dallas. She has experience in social media strategy, advertising, writing, and graphic design with FunnelAI and Twang Partners. She is familiar working with non-profits from her internship with The DoSeum where she learned about creating winning content strategy, graphic design, and how to build an online community through social media.

Al Ballew joined SSA as Chief of Public Safety with over 37 years of experience in law enforcement, public safety, and emergency management. Chief Ballew honorably retired as Chief of Police for the City of Windcrest and from the City of San Antonio Police Department. As a decorated law enforcement officer, he received the SAPD Meritorious Conduct Medal and Purple Heart Medal. He holds a BS in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology from Texas State University and is a graduate of Sam Houston State University’s Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT), the F.B.I. Command College, and the F.B.I. Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (LEEDA). He is a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Master Peace Officer, Firearms Instructor, and Training Instructor, with extensive experience in special operations and tactical response.

Breanna Castillo joins SSA as the new Receptionist/Program Assistant. In this new position, Breanna answers phones and manages the office as well as providing help in the areas of Registration, Admissions, Communications, and Finance with data entry and customer service. Breanna has experience working with non-profit organizations through the Woodlawn Theatre where she worked for six years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication from UTSA.

BRYAN EDWARDS, CFO Bryan Edwards recently joined Southwest School of Art as CFO. He is a CPA with over thirty years of experience in both public accounting and industry. He is also serving as President of the San Antonio chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs (TXCPA) for the 20212022 fiscal year. He holds a BSBA degree from the University of Arkansas and an MS degree from the University of North Texas. His interest in art began as a military dependent living in Europe as a teenager. Bryan is excited to join the staff at Southwest School of Art.

MIKE MONTEMAYOR III, FACILITIES SUPERINTENDENT

Mike Montemayor III has joined the SSA team as the new Facilities Superintendent. After graduating with a degree in Biology from UTSA, Mike worked for the City of San Antonio. He later returned to the construction and contracting world where he has held several leadership positions. Mike was born and raised in San Antonio and he is looking forward to spending more time with his family with his new role.

Chelsea Titus has joined SSA as the Director of Student Affairs. Chelsea was previously the Residence Hall Director at Texas State University, where she taught two academic courses, created student outreach initiatives to retain students, advised students during registration, and created programming opportunities to support out of classroom learning. She has experience supporting students experiencing personal, social, psychological, academic, and transitional issues, while assessing their needs and interests and connecting students to on and off campus resources. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Salisbury University Salisbury, MD, a Master's in Educational Leadership and College Student Affairs from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania - Bloomsburg, PA, and is currently working on a doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership at Abilene Christian University - Abilene, TX. SSA ON THE MOVE • In May, Photography Chair Joe Harjo participated in a partnership between Blue Star Contemporary and University Health’s Salud-Arte: Art of Healing program to create an art activity kit for patients of University Health’s Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Program. The program uses art to inspire healing, compassion, hope, and trust. Joe’s photographic prompts encourage the imaginative use of a black and white disposable camera as a form of documentation. • The works of alumnae Lauri Garcia Jones ’18 and Audrey LeGalley ’18 was featured in Love Float: Every Body Cared For, the Presa House Gallery and partner Planned Parenthood South Texas entry in the April House Float Parade organized by The King William Association, Lavaca Neighborhood Association and Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association. • Alumna Yenifer Gaviña-Franco '20 was included in an exhibition, Resurgence, at The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, on view March 26 – Aug. 12, 2021. • SSA Chairs Joe Harjo & Chris Sauter were included in the exhibition, High Visibility: On Location in Rural America and Indian Country, a long term, collaborative partnership between Art of the Rural, Plains Art Museum, and individuals & organizations across the continent. • Lauri Garcia Jones ’18 has a 2021 Featured Artist Exhibition at Choice Goods Gallery, Blue Star Contemporary. • Printmaking and Paper Chair Margaret Craig was recognized in April by Lone Star Art District as a Featured Artist along with her artwork: Evolution in the Bleached Reef.

• Drawing & Painting Chair Chris Sauter had his work Knowing and Seeing included in a new interactive art pop-up, In Living Pixels, presented by Pabst Brewing Company and Wide Awake in April at the Aztec Theatre. • In March 2021, alumna Evelyn Gonzales ’18 published Of Bodies Straining to See, a reflection of her independent studies in the fields of New Materialism, Feminist Theory, Queer and Trans Theory, and Psychoanalytic Theory, through French & Michigan Publications. • President Paula Owen was appointed to the Committee on Catalytic Projects for Downtown San Antonio: 2022 Bond Election in March. • In March, Chris Sauter was recognized as a daily Featured Artist by Lone Star Art District. • Sculpture & Integrated Media Chair Justin Boyd was included in bandcamp's February 2020 feature An Introduction to San Antonio's Roots-Inflected Alternative Country Scene. • Photography Chair Joe Harjo and Julie Ledet, were included in Glasstire in a February feature story titled Artists Make Love: Artist Couples Share Art Made For Each Other. • Chris Sauter was named a finalist for Texas State Artist 3-D by the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA). • Margaret Craig was one of the featured artists at the first outdoor Bee Cave Buzzfest: A Winter Light Festival, Dec. 1719, in Bee Cave, TX.

• Chris Sauter was the recipient of a Red Bull Arts Austin/ San Antonio Microgrant. The program awards two $1000 grants each month to artists in 20 cities across the United States. • Ceramics Chair Ryan Takaba exhibited, A Relationship with Flight, in the Middle Gallery at Blue Star Contemporary, Nov. 6, 2020 – May 9, 2021. The installation expanded on the work from his BSC Berlin Residency and his ongoing research on death rite rituals. • Several of SSA faculty and alumni including Blake Kennedy, Chris Sauter, Joe Harjo, Margaret Craig, Ryan Takaba, Joey Rivera ’20, former SSA student John Guzman, Juan Zavala Castro ’18, Lata Gedala ’19, and Yenifer Gaviña-Franco ’20 participated in Blue Star Contemporary's 30th Annual Red Dot Art Sale, Sept. 23 – Oct. 4, 2020. • Chris Sauter’s exhibition Questions for Answers was on view at Palo Alto College, Sept. 8-Oct. 9, 2020. • In October, Chris Sauter travelled to New Mexico to install his show, As Within So Without, at kind of a small array in Magdalena, NM.

Jillian Sortore had work in the exhibition AMEND from Oct 2 - Nov 2, 2020. AMEND was an online exhibition organized to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, aka Women’s Suffrage.

Celebrating Commencement The sun shone and the smiles were abundant at the 2021 Commencement Ceremony for graduates of Southwest School of Art’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Program on May 2. Twelve artists were honored for their educational achievement in an outdoor ceremony held in the school’s McNutt Gardens.

“Your career path will grow and evolve and adapt, as you grow and evolve and adapt,” said Segura. “You have the power to communicate in a language that transcends words. You have the ability to use skill and imagination to take ordinary things or spaces or moments and turn them into art. That’s magic.”

The Best of Show award was presented by President Paula Owen to senior Rachael Oelsen for her work in the senior thesis exhibition, Liminal Strands. The Hanson Whitehead Annual Prize in Paper and Book Arts was presented to Dominic Torres.

The commencement address was given by artist and curator, Patty Ortiz, who has exhibited her work throughout the United States and internationally including Mexico City, Chile, and Amsterdam. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

After congratulatory messages from President Paula Owen and Board of Trustees Chair Randy Cain, senior Marla Segura provided a student reflection that noted the “brave choice” that each student took in their pursuit of a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She pointed out that while it is not a linear path to a career, artists are ok without a standard approach.

Her inspirational words to the graduates concluded with a poignant message, “Put uncertainty, curiosity, and inspiration in the front seat of your car. Put doubt, fear and your ego in the back seat and just start driving! Roll down the windows, blast on your favorite playlist, and just drive!”

It took those grandiose ideas out of my head and that sounds bad, but it was also me figuring out that those weren’t my ideas, those were other people’s ideas that I took on. Its infinite what art can do, how you can apply art or creative skills. If anything, it’s a little more confusing but it also opens more opportunities. I feel drawn to careers that don't rely solely on just making art for money but using creative skills to help the community."

For a long time, it was just black and white photography, like darkroom, but most of my work right now is digital and I would never have guessed I would have done that. ARTIST’S PROOF CATCHES UP WITH

Gabby Borrego By Marla Segura '21 If you happen to be driving up the 1500 block of N. Main Ave. on a Saturday morning, you may notice a line of cars forming in front a quaint storefront. You may also see a petite woman pop out of the store to cheefully greet the people in the cars as she hands little white boxes through the passenger-side windows to her eager patrons. This woman is Gabby Borrego. She was a member of the Southwest School of Art's first graduating class when she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2018. Today she is the proud owner of (and baker for) Plantyful Sweets--a superfood bakery and coffee shop that is 100% gluten-free and plant-based. The concept for this unique bakery was born from Gabby's love for baking and her mindful considerations for how foods affect our wellness. When speaking with Gabby, it is clear that she applies the same thoughtfulness to her recipes as she does to her personal health. There are a few vegan bakeries in San Antonio, but Plantyful Sweets occupies a niche in which both great taste and nutritional value are equally considered. Beyond creating confections that you'd never guess are vegan (much less, gluten free), Gabby focuses her baking around wholesome ingredients. As she puts it, "If you're going to have something sweet, why not have it other things for you." Some of her beneficial ingredients include, superfoods, fiber, and plant protein. One might consider these healthy additions "bonus points" that are added to the recipes that are already low in sugar and other refined, store-bought, or over-processed ingredients.

The visual appeal of her products is also very important to Gabby. One glance at the Plantyful Sweets Instagram page lets the viewer know that she is a true artist. She credits the Southwest School of Art BFA program for not only honing her skills in design, color, and composition, but also for giving her a foundation in marketing and developing a brand voice. Back to the line of cars on Main--It should be noted that Gabby opened Plantyful Sweets less than a month before the country was shut down by COVID-19. Naturally, since health is a hallmark of the business, all orders since the start of the pandemic have been distributed via curbside pick--thus, the parked cars on the street. When speaking about the effects of the pandemic, Gabby explains, "I am lucky and grateful that it happened early on in my business. It helped me learn to pivot and just keep going and keep moving...don't stop." Even with her mask on, it's very evident that Gabby is almost always smiling when she talks about her business and the mission behind it. For Genevieve “Vieve” Duncan, the need to help others was more than just a passing thought, it was a true calling and something she instilled in the hearts of every member of her family. “She cared about many, many people much more than herself,” said daughter Genny Duncan. “She just wanted to do “ for others.”

And that she did. Her prolific lifetime of philanthropy benefitted many organizations including Southwest School of Art where she gave much of her time, talent, and treasure. Vieve, an artist herself, served on the Board of Trustees and as a tireless volunteer with the SSA youth and docent programs. She had a deep love for the school’s annual Fiesta Arts Fair and served as honorary chair in her later years. Her support for the free of charge Saturday Morning Discovery (SMD) program has greatly facilitated access to the studio arts for countless children. By providing a $750,000 challenge grant to the SMD endowment, she generated further gifts from others. This gift has made it possible for SMD to be provided in perpetuity. Despite the recent challenges caused by the pandemic, for instance, SMD was continued, though virtually, because of the support received each year from the endowment earnings. “I think it was important to her for kids to have this opportunity. People of different races, ethnicity, backgrounds, being able to give everybody a chance,” said Genny. “She was never a teacher, but she loved being with kids - the educational part of it was a big deal to her.” Vieve along with her husband, Cameron, gave many gifts to SSA over their lifetimes. Though Vieve and Cameron have passed, and their children are no longer in San Antonio, Vieve’s legacy at SSA has continued. Two of their five children, Genny, who now lives in Austin, and Cam, who lives in Santa Fe, have given generously to benefit scholarships for SSA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Program allowing a new generation of artists to receive an education. “I think the two of us want to continue that because it was a big deal to her, and we think that it’s important to the city to give everybody the opportunity to have that level of art education,” said Genny. “I think as a society we need to know that everyone benefits from the arts and therefore I think there is a big need for support of the arts.”

CHANGING PERCEPTIONS By Debra Del Toro

Joe Harjo always wanted to take pictures. In fact, he still has the first photo he ever took after being handed the camera on a childhood trip to Las Vegas to photograph a three-wheeled motorcycle. “The picture is just half of the motorcycle, like the second half,” laughed Harjo. “My timing was way off. I didn't know anything about panning.”

I hope the work opens people's minds when they interact with someone, however they present themselves. I really want our identities to be in our possession and in our control. And historically, that hasn't been the case. I speak from my experience as a native person in this country and I think a lot of native people could agree to it, but then it's a very diverse group of people, there are over 500 nationally recognized tribes and not to mention the unrecognized tribes.” Harjo is a board member of the Muscogee Arts Association, a 2020-2021 Harpo Foundation Native American Residency Fellow and a recipient of the 20202021 Blue Star Contemporary Berlin Residency hosted by Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Germany.

He’s come a long way since then to his current position as Chair of the Photography Department in Southwest School of Art’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Program. Now, after earning an associate degree in art from Rose State Community College, a BFA in Visual Arts from the University of Central Oklahoma and an MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Harjo’s strong artistic voice is a tool to help break down stereotypes of native people.

Just as he developed his voice, Harjo now works with his students at SSA to develop theirs, striving to teach each of them confidence, resourcefulness, and communication.

“My heritage is important, because I don't see a lot of native people and that was what got me to work within my own experience, that I didn't see people that looked like me in any of the art spaces. The people I did see that were native were like these Cowboy and Indian type. A lot of stereotypes,” said Harjo, an artist from the Muscogee Creek Nation of Oklahoma. “My early idea was that I wanted to put people that look like me into my work and get them into these spaces; in galleries or museums or wherever I was, I wanted them to be there too.” “I've worked to challenge what people think of native people,” said Harjo. “To work from those stereotypes and dispel them.

“I think if students can be confident that their voice matters, that their voice is worthy of hearing, then I think they can do anything,” said Harjo. “I haven't had the best cameras or the most money for this or that, but I've always invested what I did have into my practice and tried to get the most out of that. Over a year into the pandemic, we reflect on the partnerships that helped us keep art alive in the hearts and minds of young artists. By Esme Araiza

Not even a pandemic can stop the joyful learning of little artists. But over this past year, our arts educators have had to get more creative than ever. The Young Artist Program typically features in-person art classes like Summer Art Studios, Saturday Morning Discovery, Mobile Arts Programs, and Teen Programs. As the pandemic hit last year, we were faced with a challenge: How do we continue to nurture and celebrate the creative ability of youth in San Antonio when there is so much physical distance between us? The answer lies in technology and collaboration. With the help of our community partners we have been able to connect with students all over the city. Here’s what we have accomplished: • Mobile Arts Program at ten schools across SAISD and Edgewood ISD • Partnership with SAISD Fine Arts program to bring 14 teens to work in our studios alongside Art Education Specialist, Regina Sanders • Virtual Saturday Morning Discovery with over 30 videos and counting • Summer Art Studios with virtual and in-studio classes for young artists ages 5 to 18 30

• Partnership with the San Antonio River Foundation to put on Nature of Art Camp with classes taught by local artist, Sarah Fox "We’ve had to make adjustments to our programs to adhere to safety and health guidelines, but through our partnerships, we have kept our Young Artists Program active," said Patricia Morales, Director of Young Artists Program. For longtime art educator, Jenny Giuffrida, the adjustment has been difficult, but rewarding. “I found solace in teaching art to striving young artists,” said Giuffrida. "It's so hard to teach over the computer, but because of [the students], I felt this connection to life. Art keeps you grounded." We like to say that one of the greatest characteristics of the arts is its ability to adapt to difficult situations. So much has changed in the world over the past year, but Southwest School of Art has withstood a great deal over its 56-year history. Adapting and problem solving is what artists do best.

Paper and book arts artist Becky (Beck) Whitehead passed away in January and left a hole in the heart of the Southwest School of Art community. Beck was an important member of our SSA community for many years. For more than 30 years, she was a faculty member, sharing her incredible knowledge and passion for paper with all. Her work was instrumental in the development of the Papermaking and Book Arts department at SSA where she served as the Chair until 2016. Her work was regularly shown in galleries around the United States and Canada, and she conducted workshops widely. After Sept 11, 2001, she created 2,996 paper airplanes to commemorate all the lives lost that day. They were displayed in a giant stairwell at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi. She held a Bachelor of Arts from Trinity University and a Master of Fine Arts the University of Texas at San Antonio. Beck was buried beside her beloved husband Chuck at the Countryside Memorial Park in La Vernia, Texas on January 15. She is greatly missed by all who were lucky to know her. 32
