Welcome! Southwest School of Art is committed to supporting access to high-quality art instruction for youth in the San Antonio area. This spring, the Young Artist Programs will offer in-person Saturday Morning Discovery, tuition-based Studio Art Classes, including classes geared specifically to homeschoolers, and the Teen Studio Intensive. Young Artist Programs are structured and organized to provide a meaningful experience with small studio courses and highly trained art educators. Studio Art Classes are tuition-based for ages 7 – 14, with classes in a variety of mediums and techniques for students to explore and include several options designed specifically for homeschoolers. Saturday Morning Discovery (SMD) is a free introductory art experience designed primarily for youth ages 5 – 14, with a few sessions geared for teens ages 14 – 17. Advanced registration is required. Teen Studio Intensive is an after-school visual arts program for teens, both middle and high school age, with a strong interest and motivation for exploration and development of their visual arts toolbox. This program offers one-on-one mentorship in a safe environment.

All classes take place on the historic grounds of Southwest School of Art (SSA), located downtown at 300 Augusta St (Augusta & Navarro) and across from the San Antonio Central Library. At times, individual classes may include an off-site field trip as part of the learning experience. In those instances, it will be required that personal transportation is provided for each student.

The mission of Southwest School of Art teaches and advances the visual arts for the benefit of students seeking higher education and for others seeking education and enrichment.


COVID SAFETY PROTOCOL Southwest School of Art is committed to providing a safe working and learning environment for all employees and students in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The health and safety of our employees and students guide the ongoing review and adaptation of our Guidelines to Reopening Campus. The Reopening Guidelines can be found at: www.swschool.org/COVID. For studio classes, safety practices will be in place and students must follow these guidelines. Students are required to wear a mask while in the buildings and studios. All studio classes will be limited, and enrollment capacity firmly set to allow for the proper distancing between workspaces and students. Students will be required to check-in daily for temperature screening. Respect everyone’s personal space; keep a safe 6ft distance from peers and instructors Please limit the amount of outside supplies and tools you bring to class with you and bring in only essential items. Follow protocols specific to each studio/classroom space. And if you feel sick, please stay home, and inform your instructor or the registration office. If you are experiencing COVID symptoms or have been around anyone who has tested positive, please fill out our COVID-19 Self Reporting Form located on our website. Continued access to classes, studios, and buildings is dependent upon following these guidelines as well as other protocols set forth for each studio and for students.

REGISTRATION POLICY Registration To ensure enrollment, please register as soon as possible and no later than one week prior to the start date of the class, (unless otherwise noted by the class) as space is limited. You can request to be added to the waiting list of full classes. Tuition fees are due in full at time of enrollment. SSA reserves the right to refuse enrollment or dismiss any student for behavior that is disruptive or unacceptable in a learning environment.

Cancellations, Refunds, Withdrawals & Transfers SSA reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes, or to change class instructors when necessary. Tuition will be refunded 100% for classes we cancel. If SSA cancels a class for any reason, all registered students will be informed as soon as possible and extended the opportunity to transfer to another class; no transfer fee will be applied. A $45 withdrawal fee and a $25 transfer fee will be charged per class for changes made by students. Notice of withdrawal by a student must be made in writing and received no later than seven days prior to the first day of class. No refunds will be made for withdrawals made after that time. Failure to attend classes or verbal notification will not be regarded as an official notice of withdrawal.

Student Release Form Students registering for Studio Art Classes and the Teen Intensive Studio should fill out a student release form at the time of registration. After registering online, you will be prompted to fill out the form. Those registering by phone will receive an email link to complete the form. NOTE: All forms must be completed prior to the start of the first class. If you have any questions, please call the Young Artist Programs Director at 210.200.8213.

STUDIO ART CLASSES FOR YOUTH & TEENS Young Artist Programs tuition-based classes for kids and teens include all materials. Students work one-on-one with professional artist-teachers who teach new skills and nurture creativity while developing individual expression. Some courses require a materials fee which will be noted in the description.

Strengthen skills and exploration in art making! This class is rooted in the principles of art, art history, an exploration of various mediums and individual expression. Each week students work in different mediums to explore drawing, painting, pastels, fibers and more! Class sizes are small to allow for a lot of individual attention. Note: Masks may be required at the time of the class.

Watercolor is a very direct painting method that allows for a very flowing painting style. Using a limited color palette of tube watercolor paints, learn the basic techniques involved in painting in this medium including wet-on-wet painting, wet-on-dry, dry brush, and over-painting glazing techniques. Note: Masks may be required at the time of the class.

STUDIO ART CLASSES FOR YOUTH & TEENS Ages 11 – 14 7018 | Ceramics: Handbuilding Laurel Bodinus This class will focus on the basics of handbuilding techniques to achieve a variety of finished wares. Pinch, coil, and slab techniques will be taught to create cups, mugs, bowls, and plates in this fast and engaging class. Students will leave with multiple glazed and fired works of functional art. Note: Masks may be required at the time of the class. Tue, May 3 – May 31 | 4:30 – 6:30pm Handbuilding Studio | McAllister Building Tuition: $160 (Friends: $145) | 5 sessions Ages 14 – 18 7952 | Teen Open Studio Regina Sanders Students interested in refining current two-dimensional art projects or exploring new ideas will benefit from this course which offers independent study time with guidance from an artist/educator. Each session will offer space, time, and reflection for self-motivated, committed students and the opportunity to meet other young artists, receive inspiration and feedback on your work, and define your unique artistic voice. Sat, Feb 5 – Mar 5 | 1:00 – 3:00pm Teen Studio | Negley Building Tuition: $160 (Friends: $145) | 5 sessions Ages 14–18 7017 | Ceramics: The Potter’s Wheel Ed Escobedo Learn the skilled art of working on the potter’s wheel through practice, patience, and focus. Explore the techniques of centering, pulling up walls, trimming and forming functional art pieces. The basics of wheel throwing will be covered in this class while you create your very own glazed and fired bowl and cup set. Note: Masks may be required at the time of the class.

HOMESCHOOL ART CLASSES Ages 9 – 12 7101 | Tween Homeschool Art Studio Regina Sanders This drop-off program introduces tweens to more complex methods of art-making techniques and challenges them to grow in their creative process. The focus will be on learning drawing and painting techniques with a variety of mediums and outcomes. Students will be encouraged to try new methods of art-making and think outside the box in this class. Note: Masks may be required at the time of the class. Ages 13 – 18 7102 | Teen Homeschool Art Studio Regina Sanders This drop-off skills class is for the motivated teen artist interested in an in-depth opportunity to explore innovative art techniques, advance their fine art skills, and express themselves. This process-oriented course will focus on painting and drawing techniques through various mediums such as charcoal, pastels, pen & ink, and more. SATURDAY MORNING DISCOVERY Registration opens online Tuesday, November 30 Saturday Morning Discovery (SMD) | Youth 5 – 17 Celebrating 51 years of visual arts and creativity! Saturday Morning Discovery is a free, introductory art experience designed for children. From September through May sessions take place on two-consecutive Saturday mornings during the school year and provide family fun and collaborative learning by awakening a passion for art in children and their parents. Children have a hands-on opportunity to work with artist-teachers in a wide variety of media, including ceramics, drawing, and painting, printmaking, origami, weaving, seasonal art, and more. Parents and guardians work alongside their child during the activities. Activities are geared to ages 5 – 14; January and February sessions feature activities specific to older teens, aged 14 – 17.

Each session is comprised of two consecutive Saturdays; limit of one session per year, per child.

TEEN STUDIO INTENSIVE

AGES 14 – 18

Application opens November 5 This program is for teens (middle and high school) with a strong interest in visual arts looking to develop their individual skills and talent through professional instruction in a serious learning environment. The program provides young artists an opportunity to develop their portfolio by committing to an academic year-long program for high school students and a 12-week program for middle school students.

High School Program An application, portfolio review, and an interview process is required for selection to this program. Two sections are offered, meeting twice a week either on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 4:30 - 7:00pm beginning the week of January 24. Spaces for the spring session are limited to availability. Contact Teen Program Coordinator, Kim Bishop, @kbishop@swschool.org, by November 19 for more information on how to apply

Middle School Program Middle school students are required to fill out an application and submit a letter of recommendation from an educator or mentor. Applicants will be notified by December 10th. The section for middle school students is Friday, from 4:306:00pm beginning January 14th. The deadline to apply is December 3rd.

To participate in this program, students selected are expected to cover a $150 per term (fall & spring) studio fee for materials and supplies. For students in need of financial assistance there is a limited amount of funding assistance available to offset the cost of the fee. INSTRUCTORS KIM BISHOP · Teen Program Coordinator has an MA in Gifted and Talented Curriculum from Texas State University, a BFA in Commercial Art from Southwest Texas State University and is an MFA candidate in Drawing and Painting at University of Texas at San Antonio. She has been teaching and practicing art for more than 26 years. Bishop’s works are installations of personal thematic issues in a variety of medium and techniques. LAUREL BODINUS is a sculptor and costume designer who has worked for the San Antonio Children’s Museum, Guadalupe Theatre and Magik Children’s Theatre. She has taught in Summer Art Studios since 1998 and is an artist instructor for Saturday Morning Discovery. ED ESCOBEDO holds a BFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a concentration in ceramics and sculpture. His studio practice includes working with ceramics, found objects and mixed media which he incorporates into sculptural and utilitarian vessels addressing themes of humor and absurdity. JENNY GIUFFRIDA received a BFA from the University of the Incarnate Word. Giuffrida has been an artist-teacher in SSA’s Mobile Arts Program since 2005. REGINA SANDERS · Art Education Specialist SSA’s Young Artist Programs Art Education Specialist, holds Associate Degrees in Fine Arts and Illustration/Fashion from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
