More music

Hopeful for a return to in-person concerts, we are seeing more activity in live music on the local scene. The state has finally allowed bars to reopen, and the governor seems close to lifting the capacity restrictions on our restaurants. The Center at The Promenade at Bonita Bay has announced it will reopen in mid-October. That is a great outdoor venue providing good live music. The Ranch Concert Hall and Saloon has reopened and will host the Ben Allen Band in October and plans to present its first concert in November with Shenandoah. Coconut Falls Tiki Bar and Grill in Fort Myers is reopening in October. One of the big events at Coconut Falls will be a music festival to benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida. Live music has started back up at a couple outside locations at Miromar Outlets in Estero. In Naples, Mercato is starting to do more outdoor activities with a car show, live music and a movie. Bell Tower Shops brought back its Yappy Hour last month with more events planned for October. Gulfshore Opera is even taking some of its shows outdoors. Divas in Duet will be presented Oct. 22 in Bonita Springs.

Lots of art

Fort Myers Art Walk may not be formally taking place in the River District with its street closures, but there are still some great exhibits at our local galleries. DAAS Gallery will showcase artists inspired by Andy Warhol. Arts for ACT Gallery is featuring the works of Shealee Dillinger. Dark Art makes its annual return to the Sidney and Berna Davis Art Center. Additionally, the SBDAC will feature artist Tonya Barnes in the upstairs gallery. So, go experience the local arts scene. Haunts, laughs and thrills hit Cultural Park’s stage

By Michael Moran Our 58th season continues in October with the final weekend of Jersey Girls. A main stage staple at the theater, we are showcasing this revue revamped, fresh and original. Yet this show in itself has become a repeating hit on our stage by audience demand. Each recreation of this hit has had audiences on their feet, singing, laughing and yes sometimes dancing in the aisles. From opening on our main stage in 2015 and now back by popular demand, it’s Jersey Girls. A tribute to the many girl groups we all loved to hear like The Supremes, The Shirelles, The Angels and many more, it will take you back on a truly nostalgic trip with songs like “Stop in the Name of Love,” “Heat Wave,” “My Boyfriend’s Back” and many more, as our contestants gather at the Jersey shore to compete for the coveted title of the Best Jersey Girl Group. Opening on stage Oct. 22 and running through Nov. 1 is the wild Joe Simonelli comedy Wake Me at Midnight. As an added treat this year, the show is being directed by Joe Simonelli himself as he recently retired to Florida. Join us as we revisit this comic hit about struggling playwright Ted Santi who is waking his “black sheep” uncle Joey upstairs at the funeral home while all hell is breaking loose downstairs in the lounge. Who are some of the people you're likely to run into at an Italian wake? How about your ex-wife, ex-girlfriend, current girlfriend, local bookie and pesky funeral director, all of whom you owe money to. What's a guy in need of quick cash to do? How about enlist the aid of his zany relatives to find the winning sweepstakes ticket that the practical joking decedent has hidden somewhere in the funeral parlor on which the statute of limitations is set to expire at midnight. TheatreZone revamps

2020 season productions

TheatreZone in Naples has announced its 2020-21 Showstopper Series as part of its Sweet 16 season. “Since ending our season in mid-March due to the pandemic, we have spent each day monitoring the evolving situation, interpreting new information and adapting accordingly,” said founding artistic director Mark Danni. “Finding a way to reopen TheatreZone during a pandemic of a respiratory virus is not easy for an industry with unique challenges, such as the reliance on social gatherings, physical proximity, and speaking loudly,” said Danni. “However, we are proud to have created innovative ways to safely and responsibly present live entertainment this season. We are so excited to welcome audiences back to the theatre in person, and we look forward to offering the great experiences we’re known for, just in a few different ways this year.” TheatreZone’s originally scheduled Season 16 productions, which include Home for the Holidays, I Love My Wife, Bright Star, Camelot and The Bridges of Madison County will now be presented during the 2021-22 season. In place of the Broadway series, TheatreZone will present an exciting, entertaining series of five themed concerts. The Showstopper Series of concerts includes Merry Manilow (Dec. 11 - 13); Bravo Broadway! (Jan. 7 - 17); At The Movies (Feb. 4 - 14); Those Were the Days (March 4 - 14); and The Best of Bacharach (April 15 - 25). 10 - OCTOBER 2020

In order to ensure the safety of patrons, cast members, musicians and staff in all areas, TheatreZone’s Showstopper Series will feature 75- to 90-minute, themed concerts with professional, live music and choreography. “We are moving ahead in the spirit of collaboration and determination,” said Danni, “putting the health and safety of our patrons, performers and all team members first.” TheatreZone’s first Showstopper Series event, Merry Manilow, will feature holiday favorites and chart-topping hit songs from legendary performer Barry Manilow. With special guest Mark Danni on drums, the concert will include songs from Manilow’s holiday albums, as well as hits from throughout his 50 plus-year career. “Barry Manilow has been one of the biggest entertaining influences for both Karen (Danni) and I since we saw him live on Broadway in 1989,” said Danni. “Audiences who appreciate his talent will enjoy this evening of his holiday favorites, romantic ballads and heartfelt music.” Bravo Broadway!, the second event of the Showstopper Series to be presented Jan. 7-17, will feature Broadway’s classic hits from throughout its many decades, in addition to songs from the 2000’s. From Feb. 4 to 14, TheatreZone will present At The Movies. Audiences will take a trip through the many hit songs from their favorite movies throughout history. This concert event will include hit songs such as the Academy Award-winning “The Way We

Were” from the 1973 romantic drama, “Moon River” from the romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and “Arthur’s Theme” from the comedy Arthur, as well as some disco hits from the 1977 American dance drama Saturday Night Fever. The fourth Showstopper Series event, Those Were the Days, will be presented March 4 - 14. This fun show takes the audience on a journey through the 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The talented cast will not only perform hit songs through the decades, but also an entertaining television theme show medley for an unforgettable evening of fun. The Best of Bacharach, the fifth and final event of the Showstopper Series, will be held April 15 - 25. This show will take audiences back to this legendary composer’s most prolific time, the 1960s and ‘70s, when music was a common thread that kept everyone sane. “One of the reasons we chose to bring Burt Bacharach’s music to our audiences with this show is because of the nostalgia we feel when we hear these songs and they put smiles on all our faces,“ said Danni. TheatreZone’s audiences will be limited to a maximum of 108 patrons per performance, and masks will be required throughout the duration of each performance. For individual show times, visit online at www.theatre.zone or call the box office at 888-966-3352 x1. Hirdie Girdie opens season early

Hirdie Girdie Gallery has announced an early opening for the 2020-2021 season. Starting Oct. 5, the gallery on Sanibel will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Several new artists have joined the gallery this year. Suzanne Bennett is a pastel artist who creates loose, impressionistic paintings, most often of the beaches and tropical locales of southwest Florida. She enjoys plein air painting on a weekly basis, and her goal is to have the viewer feel the intensity of light and heat that is inherent in our environment. Kelly Williamson is well known on Sanibel and in Fort Myers both as a potter and as an environmental educator. Her functional pottery is often inspired by local sea life and is influenced by her knowledge of the coastal environment. Kelly enjoys exploring and experimenting with various pottery forms, glazes, and firing processes. Oil painter Julie Griffin specializes in creating landscapes, seascapes, and portraits using the academic painting method.

This is a technique favored by the Italian Renaissance painters, and consists of transparent glazes of color applied to a muted under painting, giving the artwork luminosity and depth. Julie has studied this method in Italy and France, where she successfully completed several reproductions of famous artists’ works, and she now applies it to her contemporary pieces. Oliver Martin has worked with wood since childhood, and began studying the craft of woodturning thirty years ago. He enjoys the process of revealing the hidden beauty that exists within the whorls and shading of wood. Oliver creates decorative items for the home, as well as functional pens and bottle stoppers. An interview with the new Naples Art ambassador Interviewee: Art, Naples Art’s Ambassador (Art) Interviewer: Naples Art media representative (NA)

NA: “Ladies and gentlemen, we would like to introduce you to Art, Naples Art’s new ambassador for the visual arts! Art, thank you for joining us.” Art: “Thank you for welcoming me. I’m so excited to be here!

NA: So, you’ve joined us here, having just stepped off the model’s platform in a human forms drawing class. What made you decide to transition from model to spokesperson for the visual arts at Naples Art? Art: Great question! Art has long been viewed as something that other people do, something that only skilled people do or something that you look at from a distance. I thought that needed to change. Art is fun, interactive, participatory, stress relieving, exciting - and all of it is made better with friends… Naples Art provides all of this, and I want to make sure people are aware of all of the benefits and possibilities.

NA: Art, what a great explanation and so true! What do you appreciate most about Naples Art? Art: Really, it’s the continued dedication of everyone involved to constantly review and update not only what is offered, but how it’s offered. For instance, we still offer our beloved and popular watercolor painting classes, but we’ve added things like movie makeup artistry, and they are available in-studio on property at our beautiful downtown location just off 5th as well as online making it easy and welcoming for all… that really sums it up, it’s art for all. NA: Art, give us a quick sample of the selection available that potential students may find of interest. Art: Online sampling- there’s photorealistic illustration, layered imagery collage and what is becoming a favorite- therapeutic finger painting! In-Studio samples we have pottery wheel throwing, glass jewelry, acrylic pour painting and the classics like watercolor, acrylic and oil painting for all levels. NA: Where do people go to find out about these classes and other opportunities at Naples Art? Art: All the classes are detailed at www.NaplesArt.org under LEARN & TEACH. And for something else interesting you can also go to SHOP and discover our fun and very unique online gift store- Originals!

NA: Well, I know many of our friends reading this right now are having their interest piqued and will be jumping online to learn more. Art, where will be seeing you next…? Art: Oh… can’t disclose anything about that yet… you’ll just have to wait and see, but I promise you’ll being seeing a lot more of me around town.

Explore East Palm at Neenie’s House

When Janeen Vanko bought a vintage Florida cottage and created Neenie's House, she was hoping to turn the ethnic commercial area into Funkytown. The arts were sadly missing in this area of town, yet there were so many cultures living and working there. She figured - build it, and they will come. Well, almost two years later, progress has been made, but there is so much more that could happen to make this area the New Bohemia. To date, Neenie's House is a gift shop for affordable unique gifts - (she had the first RBG T-shirts in town) art, jewelry and vintage trinkets. Neenie's is the home for Love Your Rebellion’s Zine Library - the only one in Happenings Magazine

Southwest Florida. She has had live bands, art shows, private birthday parties, even a quinceanera, in her rental event space - Peace Plaza. And the weekend East Palm Mercado, her neighborhood fleamarket, is finally gaining popularity with the locals. “But much more can happen,” says Vanko. Janeen would love to fill up the calendar with arts events every weekend. “So please explore the other Fort Myers. The time is now, and let's bring the arts to East Palm,” she adds. Neenie’s House is located 481 Marsh Ave. in Fort Myers (just off Palm Beach Boulevard. You can call Janeen Vanko at 224-678-4901 or visit online at www.neenieshouse.com. OCTOBER 2020 - 17

TheatreZone updates

2021 concert schedule

TheatreZone’s 2020-21 Concert Series has been updated and includes one-of-a-kind performances local audiences will thoroughly enjoy. The season includes the return of the extremely popular Mersey Beatles, who have sold out shows the past three seasons at TheatreZone, as well as four great new shows: Simon & Garfunkel: Live in Central Park, revisited; The Feud: Sinatra & Roselli, Two Guys from Hoboken; Sinatra…my way; Mack is Back: The Music of Bobby Darin. Simon & Garfunkel: Live in Central Park, revisited will be presented on Jan. 18 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. “My friend Lee Lessack has recreated this great concert around the country to sold-out audiences,” said TheatreZone’s Mark Danni, “and we’re proud to present it on our stage on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.” The Feud: Sinatra & Roselli, Two Guys from Hoboken, The Story & The Music will be presented on Jan. 23 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Told by Dennis DelleFave, Jimmy Roslli’s cousin and road manager, this concert focuses on the personal and professional rivalries between Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Roselli, two great singers who lived on the same block in Hoboken, NJ. The Feud’s got it all: the great Sinatra songbook, Italian songs that Roselli made famous, and much more from the ‘40s through the ‘70s. Sinatra…my way will be presented on Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. “Larry Alexander who has appeared on Broadway in Les Miserables and is a Happenings Magazine

TheatreZone fan favorite, is back on our stage for this exciting concert,” said Danni. Though yet unconfirmed, rumor has it that the orchestra will include a special guest drummer who has performed on Broadway for such smash shows as Chicago, Les Miserables, Grand Hotel and Miss Saigon Fan favorite The Mersey Beatles will perform its “Favorites of Naples” show on Feb. 16 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Like the original Fab Four, The Mersey Beatles are a band from the great city of Liverpool. They are childhood friends who share a love of Beatles music. The “Favorites of Naples” show will include Beatles hits spanning 40 plus years, with special emphasis on the songs TheatreZone’s audience fondly espouses. Mack is Back: The Music of Bobby Darin & More will be presented on Feb. 18 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Grammy Award-winning American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, film and television actor: there’s not much the talented Bobby Darin couldn’t do. Blues concert series launches Nov. 1

A new blues concert series will be held on Sundays throughout November at Coconut Falls Tiki Bar and Grill in Fort Myers. The series launches Sunday, Nov. 1 with Albert Castiglia. JP Soars will perform Sunday, Nov. 8. The second half of the month will feature Sean Chambers on Nov. 22 and Damon Fowler on Nov. 29. All four shows run from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 with $5 off your entree purchase. As most artists will attest, the most unexpected circumstance can spark artistic inspiration. That’s a fact that hasn’t been lost on singer, songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire Albert Castiglia. With his latest album, the aptly named Masterpiece, he celebrates an unforeseen triumph -- a connection with a daughter he never knew he had. The result is a work that’s both personal and provocative all at the same time. Castiglia calls this the most meaningful album he’s ever made. “My daughter

finding me and opening up my world to an additional family, including two grandchildren, brought out the deepest material I’ve ever created,” he notes, “along with my wife, they were my muses.” Indeed, songs such as “Keep On Swinging,” “Masterpiece” and “Bring on the Rain” address the unexpected emotions that infused his psyche with the discovery of a family he never knew. J.P. Soars is soaring high, touring the world after releasing a new studio album last fall, Let Go of the Reins, produced by Tab Benoit on Benoit’s Whiskey Bayou label. Soars was also nominated for “Blues Rock Artist of the Year” in the 40th annual Blues Music Awards, alongside blues music heavyweights Billy Gibbons, Eric Gales, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Tinsley Ellis, rounding out the blues rock category. Coconut Falls Tiki Bar and Grill is located at 17200 S. Tamiami Trail in Fort Myers.

Taste of the Islands takes on new format

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) welcomes Bank of the Islands/Edison National Bank as the returning presenting sponsor for the 39th Taste of the Islands. This marks the banks’ 11th year as the presenting sponsor of CROW’s signature event as new changes come about during the COVID-19 pandemic. CROW’s executive director Alison Charney Hussey welcomes their return: “We are extremely appreciative of Bank of the Islands/Edison National Bank’s faithful support of CROW and our work saving local wildlife. They have been amazing working with us as we pivot through these new changes.” Taste of the Islands is typically held on a Sunday in November with a dozen or so restaurants offering their tastes for the patrons in a festival style setting. This year, however, the event will be moving into the restaurants and lasting throughout the month of November. “Taste of the Islands needed to be ‘reimagined’ this year. We couldn’t

Happenings Magazine

have it in the park, so we needed to be creative,” says Hussey. “Everyone has had a pretty rough year, so we are excited to be able to encourage diners to come to the islands, to visit the restaurants themselves all while helping to raise money for wildlife and keeping our community healthy.” Each participating restaurant will be offering their “Taste” items to showcase their cuisine throughout the month of November. A portion of the proceeds from those designated food and beverage “Tastes” sold will be donated to CROW. Additionally, every Sunday a different ‘CROW Crawl’ will feature different restaurants for hungry patrons to visit. The CROW tent, along with Animal Ambassadors, will be in front of one of the restaurants with Taste of the Islands sponsors featured outside other restaurants in the region. In lieu of an admission to the event, participants can purchase a “Taste Passport” with a listing and map of participating restaurants. Each restaurant will stamp or punch the

passport so patrons can track their progress. Only passport holders will be eligible to vote for their favorite restaurant to win the coveted ‘People’s Choice Award’ and be entered into a drawing for fabulous prizes including vacation stays and gift certificates. Passports will be available for purchase at CROW or at participating restaurants, or online for pick up at “Will Calls” both on Sanibel and off. Proceeds from Taste of the Islands ensure CROW’s continued success providing the highest quality care and treatment of injured, ill and orphaned wildlife through state-of-the-art veterinary care. Funds also support public educational exhibits at the Visitor Education Center. Healthy wildlife means a healthy environment for all of us. For more information about Taste, sponsorships, or to become a participating restaurant, contact Mary C. Schoeffel, development director, at 239-472-3644 #232 or mschoeffel@crowclinic.org
