JoAnneCrowsontooka longerpathintoartthanmany otherartistsatCOCOArt Gallery.“Sevenyearsago,I wouldstatethatIdidn’thavean artistboneinmybody!”she exclaimed.
Soonaftergrowingupin GraniteCity,Ill.,graduating fromcollegewithadegreeinK12education,andgettingmarried,sheandherhusband, John,movedtoMinnesota.She soondecidedthatteaching wouldnotbeherlifelong career,giventhenumerous cutsbeingmadetoeducation throughoutthecountryatthat time.Sheturnedherattentiontothebusinesssector,wheresheandherhusband becametheinternationalsalesdepartment foramanufacturerofdiggerderricks.He handledoutsidesales,andshemanaged internaloperationsandsalessupport.She eventuallyleftthatorganizationtojoina Fortune500manufacturer,whereshewas recruitedfortheirITdepartment.Shethen returnedtoschooltostudytheemerging fieldofcomputerscience.Withastrong loveoflearning,ifshecomesacrosssomethingshedoesn’tknow,shelearnsit. Eventually,theirjobsrelocatedthecouple toWisconsin,whereJoAnneworkedasan independentprojectmanagerandITconsultant.ItwasherethatshehadtheopportunitytofunctionastheleadprojectmanagerfortheconstructionofaCancer CenterandClinicinPewaukee.


Aftertheirretirementandmoveto Florida,shesoughtsomethingengagingto fillhertime.Encouragedbyherdaughter, shestartedexploringpainting.Asalogical thinker,shefirstapproacheditviaascientificroutewithaneyetothechemicals usedinthepaintsandadditives.She watchedYouTubevideos,startingwith FluidArt(AcrylicPours).Then,realizingthe needforamoretechnicalfoundation,she joinedamentorshipprogramforColor Theorybeingtaughtonlinebyanartistin Australia.Inthatpursuitshelearnedhowto usecolorstosaywhatyouwantto express.
Next,shejoinedaCanadianmentorship forcompositionandelementsofart.With thatnewinformation,shebeganadding embellishmentpaintingtoherFluidArtcan-
vases.Likemanyotherartistswho’vetried thatmedium,shefounditveryexciting, becauseyoudon’talwaysknowwhatyou’ll getasthepaintcolorsandviscosities alwaysreacttoeachotherinuniqueways oneachcanvas.
Soonshefoundthatpaintingsoloinher studiocouldfeellonelyandisolated,soshe foundedanon-profitorganizationnamed theArtGuildofNaples—theirmotto:Artists helpingartists.Asagrouptheywouldtake fieldtripstodifferentgalleries,museums, andartfestivals.Itwasoneofthosetrips thatshediscoveredCOCOArtGalleryin Esterowhereshebecameanactivememberin2019.WhenthesecondCocoArt GalleryopenedinNaples’Coastland CenterMallshebeganexhibitingthereas well.
Primarilyanabstractartist,shelovesto walkintoherstudiotoablankcanvasand letthenewpaintingsurpriseherasitdevelopswitheachbrushstroke.Herfocusison
colorandcomposition.Admitting thatshehasnopatienceforoil paints(toolongtodry),sheworks almostexclusivelywithacrylics.She lovesbrightcolors,especiallyblues. Herpaintingsevokeemotionsand inspireherviewers.Recently,she hastakenadifferentpathwithher paintingsofdogs–notpetportraits, butdogsthatrepresenttheirbreeddogswithpersonalityandindividual character.
Besideshertalentforpainting, sheisanaccomplishedmusicianon thepiano.Withaloveforallmusic, shehadoriginallystartedcollegeas amusicmajor,playingtheclarinet. Musicisoneofherfavoriteinspirationswhilepainting.JoAnnealso hasaloveoftravelandstillonher BucketListaretripstoItalyand Portugal.Shealsothinksshewould enjoyrivercruises.
