Winding down
Southwest Florida’s theatre season is definitely winding down as some of our stages are putting on their final performances before taking a well deserved summer break. Nonetheless, we do have some offerings to take note of ... Les Liaisons Dangereuses plays through May 7 at the Laboratory Theater of Florida in downtown Fort Myers. Stories of Spoon River is being staged now through May 1 at FGCU TheatreLab. In Naples, TheatreZone wraps up its season with The Bridges of Madison County now through May 1 at the G & L Theatre. Head Over Heels is on stage now through May 1 at New Phoenix Theatre in Fort Myers. After taking a short break for “a positive Covid case inside the show’s production circle,” Florida Repertory Theatre has extended the run of Maytag Virgin until May 29 in the ArtStage Studio Theatre. In the Heights is still on stage through May 14 at Broadway Palm in Fort Myers. The Charlotte Players wrap up their season with Wedding Belles May 13 - 20 at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte. In Naples, Gulfshore Playhouse presents Another Revolution April 30 May 15 at The Norris Center. The ‘80s rock musical Rock of Ages opens May 20 at Broadway Palm and runs through June 25. The Jacksonian will be on stage at Moe Auditorium in Bonita Springs May 27 through June 5. The Naples Players return to the stage in June with Something Rotten playing June 22 to July 24. Several of our area theatre groups have announced their season schedules for 2022-23. Over the next few months, we will share those new schedules with our readers. Les Liaisons Dangereuses at The Laboratory Theater of Florida
Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Christopher Hampton plays at The Laboratory Theater of Florida now through May 7. Using sex as a weapon, this is a tale of seduction. Set among aristocrats before the French Revolution, the classic drama (adapted from the 18th-century novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos) explores decadent sexuality, morals, and manipulation as the ultimate game played - with tragic results. This play is sensual, with a biting wit and a healthy dose of lust, intrigue, and sexual gamesmanship that will keep you on your toes until the final scene. Director Paul Graffy says, “What is most interesting to me about Les Liaisons Dangereuses is not what these characters do, but why they do it in the first place, and what the end results are. end of Act One, ‘The only thing that might surprise one is how little the world changes.’ That line resonates very deeply with me. Cruelty to others as sport is not unique to this story or historical period. It is as prevalent today as it was dramatized over two centuries ago. Think cyberbullying, anonymous blogging, social media, etc. With the benefit of hindsight, it is easy to see that, as many societies evolve, the polarities between the haves and have-nots widen, and political revolutions arise. How many major revolutions have we witnessed in just the past few years or are happening now? This production presents the artifice that defined late 18th-century France as we strive to expose what lies beneath that artifice. We also look to explore the timelessness of these abhorrent behaviors in an effort to recognize, albeit sadly, ‘How little the world changes.’”

Directing In The Heights is Eliseo Roman, and the choreographer and assistant director is Rebecca Kritzer. Kritzer was part of the original cast of In The Heights first national tour working with the original creative team and performing with the show’s creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. The musical supervisor for this production is Zachary Dietz who worked on Broadway with In The Heights along with Mrs. Doubtfire, School of Rock and Wicked, among others. Maytag Virgin wraps up season for Florida Rep Florida Repertory Theatre’s 20212022 season concludes with the humorous and heartwarming romantic comedy, Maytag Virgin by Audrey Cefaly. The new play is a romance that follows a year with Lizzy Nash and Jack Key, two Alabama school teachers who thought love had passed them by, and plays in the ArtStage Studio Theatre now to May 29. "We designed our 2021-2022 season to be hopeful, uplifting, and provide an escape for audiences," said Florida Rep's artistic director Greg Longenhagen, “and Maytag Virgin strikes all the perfect notes for the final offering of this memorable year. This is the story of two people finding that love is still possible for them, and over the course of a year, we see them both recover from personal tragedies and take a step forward toward love once again. I know our audiences will love this tender, funny, and uplifting story about making a connection – a story we all need right now.” Maytag Virgin is a heartwarming new comedy and an old-fashioned romance about two people who thought they’d never find love again. Layton returns to Florida Rep after appearances in “Time Stands Still” in 2013 and Florida Rep’s 2015 world premiere production of “Split in Three” – and is no stranger to Southwest Florida having spent a number of years as a professor of theatre at FGCU. Ms. Layton is a former company member at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and on the small
screen, she played recurring roles on “Ellen,” “Charmed,” and “Silk Stalkings.” Duke Lafoon makes his Florida Rep debut with “Maytag Virgin,” but is a regional and New York veteran whose recent appearances include OffBroadway, Gateway Playhouse, Goodspeed, Orlando Shakespeare, Florida Studio Theatre, Signature, and The Old Globe. Mr. Lafoon also works extensively on television with roles in “Hostages,” and “Mindhunter,” among others. He is now the new executive director of the Cultural Park Theater. He has produced/directed over 250 productions in the Jersey Shore, Lincroft, Manasquan, N.J. area and Off-Broadway. TheatreZone in Naples has released its 18th season of musical theatre and concerts. The 2022-23 lineup inspired the theme “Romantics & Rockers,” and features shows that originate from luminaries such as Stephen Sondheim, Jimmy Buffet, Marvin Hamlisch, and iconic 80s rock bands. The season debuts with the traditional season opener, Home for the Holidays. The main stage productions that follow celebrate beloved ballads, folk songs and rock-n-roll classics. “TheatreZone intends to get you on your feet and sing along as the beat continues with four concerts with homages to memorable hit-makers such as James Taylor, Billy Joel and Elton John,” says TheatreZone founder Mark Danni.

A Little Night Music, Stephen Sondheim’s 1973 Broadway musical, is a romantic farce about the lives of several upper-middle-class couples set in early 20th century Sweden. It was suggested by Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer Night, an evening of sexual musical chairs on the longest night of the year. The couples, mostly mismatched at the start, end up with more desirable partners by the final curtain. Sondheim’s score features his bestknown song, “Send in the Clowns.” A Little Night Music won a 1973 Tony Award for best musical.

Based on a true story, the musical was written by Emmy award winner Greg Garcia and Emmy nominee Mike O’Malley and made its debut in 2018. Set in the rundown Margarita hotel on a small Caribbean island, visiting girlfriends mingle with the hotel’s resident colorful characters and become romantically involved. The show follows the characters over a three-year time span following the sudden closure of the hotel due to a natural disaster. The group reunites at the reopened hotel for a sweet and satisfying finale. Jimmy Buffet songs include “Come Monday,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Margaritaville,” which was inducted into the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame for its cultural and historic significance.

The Goodbye Girl is Neil Simon’s 1993 Broadway adaptation of his Academy Award-nominated 1977 film. The Naples Players is moving forward into their dynamic 69th season. This upcoming season is dedicated to building community, instilling laughs, and looking to the future. The following season was unveiled in February: From June 22 to July 24, the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical, Something Rotten! welcomes you to the Renaissance and Blackburn Hall. The story follows brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom who are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of a Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” The Bottom Brothers set out to write the world’s very first musical! Don’t forget - the KidzAct production of Something Rotten! Teen will be in Blackburn Hall from Aug. 5 - 7. By The Way, Meet Vera Stark runs from Oct. 19 to Nov. 6 in the Tobye Studio Theater and follows aspiring starlet Vera Stark during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Featuring cherished songs by Rodgers & Hammerstein, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “My Favorite Things,” The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars. In Blackburn Hall from March 1 to April 2, the story follows an exuberant young governess who brings music and joy back to a broken family, only to face danger and intrigue as the Nazis gain power. Davis Art Center showcases grant recipients Embracing Stillness exhibit upstairs in Capital Gallery
The City of Fort Myers Public Art Committee will be exhibiting its Biennial Individual Artist Grant Recipients show being featured in the downstairs Grand Atrium of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in May. Upstairs in the Capital Gallery, an exhibit titled Embracing Stillness, a group show that explores the art of still life, will be on display Both galleries are open for viewing May 6 - 26. Opening night for both exhibitions will be during Art Walk on Friday, May 6 from 6 to 10 p.m. The City of Fort Myers strives to encourage artistic quality and program innovation, to develop new audiences, and to challenge existing audiences, through their annual Individual Artist Grants. The city aims to promote lifelong arts and cultural education, multicultural inclusion, and also increase private support for the arts & culture and economic development and tourism. This valuable grant opportunity encourages art and culture in all Fort Myers communities, creating a nurturing environment in which artists can flourish. The exhibition showcases the work of visual and performing artists who received grants from the City of Fort Myers in 2020 and 2021. But this is no ordinary visual arts show. ArtBeat Studios, located in Royal Palm Square in Fort Myers, welcomes three visiting artists in May. Bill Jewell began drawing as a child, and as an adult, became intrigued with the unique color transitions and silhouettes at sunset and sunrise. Bill makes many of his own pigments from the numerous rocks and minerals he has collected over the past decades. The crystalline structure of the finely ground minerals is the intrinsic element in his process.

Her art has since evolved to include drawing, painting, needle felting, jewelry crafting, calligraphy, photography and any other medium that intrigues her. Elyse is spending her sophomore year of high school designing posters, investigating digital art, excelling in her studies, looking forward to advanced art classes and feeding her creative spirit. DAAS features the art of Lawrence Dineen ART
In the month of May, DAAS CoOp Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the art of visual and tattoo artist Lawrence Dineen. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, May 6 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through May 29. Lawrence Dineen was born in Wilmington, Delaware, located just south of Philadelphia, PA. He first showed his interest in art at an early age. Dineen’s art was heavily influenced by street art and graffiti. In third grade, he entered a pencil drawing of a rhino into national competition and won first place. From there on, he saw his potential and was motivated to pursue an art career. Throughout his school years, his love for art came and went. Being told he would never go anywhere with his art, along with few tragedies he endured, Dineen walked away from his passion, putting his pens, markers, and spray cans down. Not for too long though. Eventually he returned to what made him happy, creating. During this artistic revival, he painted with his friends, a local graffiti crew known as Cangoods. He also worked as a barber, while producing art at his studio. After a long career in cosmetology, the artist took his love for creating art to the skin and
became a tattoo artist at Ancient Art Tattoo Studio in North Fort Myers. Today, he draws inspiration from music, family, past experiences and his first love: Graffiti. His art ranges styles from an urban to dark macabre. He is not limited to one view of the world and recommends ours not to be either. The bright colors in his street style awaken the brain while his darker macabre style takes down the path of his inner torment and personal struggles. That being said, he always finds the beauty amongst the dark. “Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows and neither is my art.” – says Dineen, who considers himself a self-taught artist in all facets of his work from, cosmetology to painting and tattooing. This exhibition embodies the visions of his thought process. “Remove the rose-colored glasses to see what I see,” says Dineen. Baker Museum acquires Pam Longobardi’s Swerve Artis—Naples has announced a significant acquisition to The Baker Museum permanent collection: Swerve by Pam Longobardi, currently on view in the exhibition Pam Longobardi: Ocean Gleaning. This acquisition was made possible by a gift from Anne and Mark Rubin. Created in 2019, the wallmounted work consists of more than 500 ocean plastic objects from Alaska, Greece, California, Hawaii, the Gulf of Mexico and Costa Rica. State University in Atlanta, has been working with found ocean plastics for more than 15 years, since discovering the mountainous piles of plastic debris the ocean was depositing on the remote shores of Hawaii. She refers to this body of work as the Drifters Project. In collaboration with local communities, Longobardi has cleaned beaches around the globe—including Clam Pass in Naples—removing tens of thousands of pounds of plastic from the environment and converting them into epic artworks. Roger Deering, Kim Carioto-Krugle art on display at Cape Coral Library
The art of Roger Deering and Kim Carioto-Krugle is on display at the Cape Coral Library in April and part of May. The library is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace, and the current exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours now through May 14. Southwest Florida’s natural beauty is Roger Deering’s favorite subject. He creates his gorgeous oil paintings by employing a brush as well as a palette knife to achieve the desired effect.

Although Deering took some art classes way back when he was in college, he didn’t’ have the time to enjoy painting during the decades he was busy working. It’s now been twenty years since he retired, took some more art courses, picked up the brushes, and started winning awards in several art organizations first in Maine and later here in Florida. Roger is currently an active member of the Cape Coral Art League. Kim Carioto-Krugle’s art is primarily created using either of two different media: oil paint or paper. The paintings are on canvas and executed using brush and/or palette knives. The paper pieces are a combination of cut and torn papers. Some of her paper “mosaics” are so intricate that viewers often believe at first glance that they are actually paintings. Kim Carioto received a Bachelor’s of Science in Art Education and a Masters in Humanities with a Fine Arts concentration. Her art teaching career

spanned 36 years in four states and included all grade levels. After retirement, Kim is living in Florida and is a member of the Cape Coral Art League, where she has won many awards in the monthly shows. In 2017, she had a solo exhibit at Cape Coral Library. Her work has also been displayed at the Cape Coral Art Center, COCO Gallery in Estero, the Annual Cape Coral Festival of the Arts and the Slidell Cancer Center.

What’s happening at Neenie’s House? More and more. In the three plus years since Janeen Vanko created Neenie’s House, it has evolved into what she really wants it to be. But it will always continue to be what the community needs, says Vanko. Currently, besides housing Love Your Rebellion’s Zine Library and having a Saturday and Sunday Fleamarket, every Sunday at noon, Neenie’s hosts The Helping Hands community dinner. Neenie’s is involved in the local homeless community by supplying clothes, books and more. So now people can get a free home cooked meal, shop for clothes and food, and have a stress free experience all in one place. Janeen’s mission was to make her East Palm neighborhood a haven for the arts of all kinds. She has created events

The April 8 ArtSmack event was such a success, and that event will now be the second Friday night of each month. And coming in June will be a plant sale with a twist. This will be a market place for anyone to sell their own plants and related stuff. And don’t forget that Neenie’s back yard, Peace Plaza, is available to rent for any occasion. Gulfshore Opera offers romantic French
melodies and joyful spring concerts
As part of Gulfshore Opera’s growth, the company has added themed recitals highlighting specific countries and languages for an intimate off-season experience. On May 15 at 2 p.m., indulge in the beauty of French mélodie, popular songs and arias from French operas and operettas at the Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church in Naples. Luiz González, baritone, joins Steffanie Pearce, soprano, and other Gulfshore Opera artists to perform with piano accompaniment in Vanderbilt Presbyterian’s 2021/2022 concert series. Enjoy selections from Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann, Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, and songs Luiz Gonzalez by Ravel, Fauré and Debussy. GO Divas May 19 and 22
Gulfshore Opera’s regionally based women’s ensemble, the GO Divas, are now in their third season. This sought after group will perform two spring concerts on May 19 and 22 featuring rich harmonies, with piano accompaniment. Audiences will hear familiar music ranging from Mozart to the Beatles. Popular, upbeat melodies are interspersed with beautiful, classical vocal ensembles creating a memorable concert of fine vocal music.

The Americana Community Music Association welcomes Sofia Talvik in concert on May 7 at 7 p.m. at the ACMA listening room in Fort Myers. Local ACMA member Dan Philgreen will open the show. Sofia Talvik is a rare artist and an avid storyteller with a voice comparable to giants like Joni Mitchell, or as the folk/Americana magazine No Depression said it, ”A singer/songwriter who is able to evoke the essence of Laurel Canyon circa the ‘60s as expressed in the work of Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Buffy Sainte-Marie and others who were able to paint beautiful tapestries from words and music.” Prepare yourself for an unique and intimate evening, not unlike the ‘70s coffeehouses and speakeasy's. You will be up close and personal with a world class act that has played big festivals like Lollapalooza and SxSW and opened for artists like Maria McKee and David Duchovny (X-files, Californication). It is in
this kind of setting where she can casually joke and communicate with the audience that her strength as a performer shines the most. Her delicate songs are performed in an intimate way, showing off Sofia’s angelic voice enhanced only by a tasteful mix of harmonies and delays, accompanied by the steady picking of her acoustic guitar and the rhythm section consisting of her own two feet, bells and a stomp box. Talvik's 8th studio album "Paws Of a Bear" was released September 2019. The album is reflecting inwards instead of to her surroundings, exploring thoughts about identity and home. Jaime Michaels to perform May 21 The Americana Community Music Association presents Jaime Michaels in concert on May 21 at 7 p.m. at the ACMA listening room in Fort Myers. Local ACMA member Bill Veach will open the show. A venue operator in California refers to Jaime Michaels as a “songwriters’ songwriter.” He came late to the craft having enjoyed a long career as a cover artist both as a soloist and, for a while, full tilt rock and roll band lead singer with The Truly Dangerous Swamp Band. Not being much of a radio fan, he chose his covers carefully…sometimes something recognizable like Dylan or the Beatles, sometimes just

Something happened a few years back when he moved west, far from his east coast roots, to a new home in Santa Fe, N.M. Grand Slam Music Festival The Southern Grand Slam Music Festival was held April 22 and 23 at the Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte. Caloosa Sound Amphitheater
Construction is nearly complete in Centennial Park for the new Caloosa Sound Amphitheater located between Edwards Drive and the Caloosahatchee River. Final touches and landscaping were being worked on in late April. The amphitheater lawn is designed so the audience will be at five different levels for better sight lines of the stage. The City of Fort Myers reports a special event will be held some time in May to showcase the new city facility.
