MarcusThomaswasoncea vibrant,adventuroussoul,hislife filledwiththethrillofrockclimbing, therushofmountainbiking,and thejoyofsnowskiing.He dreamedofonedaybecomingan activitiesdirectorataresort.But onefatefulwinterday,hislife changedforever.
Whileskiingonanicyslope Marcusfellandcollidedintoatree. Thefalllefthimwithasevere spinalcordinjury,renderinghim quadriplegic.Thedoctorsdelivered thecrushingnews:hewouldnever regainmovementbelowhisneck. ForMarcus,theopenspaceshe soenjoyedseemedtoshrinkto theconfinesofahospitalbed,his dreamsofadventureslipping away.
Monthsofrehabilitationfollowedbutneverdwindledhis spirit.OnedayafterseeinganarticleaboutanartistwhopaintedwithabrushheldinhismouthhiswifeAnnegavehimagift ofabeginnerswatercolorsetandapaintbrushriggedtofit comfortablyinhismouth.Throughstrengthandanewfoundjoy ofcreativityMarcusdiscoveredthatartcouldtranscendthelimitsofhisbody.
“I’vealwaysbeenfascinatedwithflight,soitwasanatural
transitiontopaintingbirds.”he says. Audubonwasanearlyinfluence—thenRobertBateman,a Canadianartist.
“Peopleareverypassionate abouttheirbirds—theyreferto themas‘theirs’,”hesays.“Evenif theyjustcasuallybirdwatch.It’s aninterestingjourneyforbirders. They’reafascinatingpeople,and there’salotofthemoutthere.” Andhisworkappealstothem.In his25thyearofpainting,hebegun aprojecttopaint25ofhisfavorite hummingbirdsthroughoutthe world.
“Therearehundreds;it’smind boggling,”hesays.“It’sabeautiful littlebird.RightnowI’mfocused onSouthAmerica,primarily Brazil.”Ironically,ifnotforhisaccident,heprobablyneverwould havepickedupapaintbrush.“It wasaradicalchange,difficult,”he admitsaboutlifeafterhisaccident.“Butweneverlookedback.
