Publisher’s Spotlight

Fourth of July

Can you believe half the year is behind us already? Where is the time going? With that said, it’s time to celebrate our wonderful country ... The United States of America. Fireworks will light up the skies of Sanibel, Bonita Springs, Punta Gorda, Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral and Fort Myers Beach this year. Some communities have parades scheduled as well. They include Fort Myers Beach, Naples, Sanibel and Bonita Springs, to name a few. To make the patriotic holiday celebrations even sweeter, a handful of live music events are planned, too. Fishermen’s Village in Punta Gorda is celebrating July 3 and 4. Freedom Fest will be July 3 in Laishley Park in downtown Punta Gorda. Star Spangled Bonita will rock Riverside Park on July 4. The Fort Myers River District will be have live music at several places on July 4. The biggest event on July 4 will be Red, White and Boom in Cape Coral which has a national headliner performing on its stage. No matter how you celebrate, please remember to play it safe and don’t overdue it.

Live and local music

We promote live and local music in every issue, but it’s at this time of the year when we give our local musicians a little extra push in the magazine. The past 27 years, Happenings Magazine has introduced our readers to many talented people. Some of these performers you can see quite often, and some you may not have had the chance to experience yet. Nonetheless, in this month’s magazine, we are letting you know about some of the many talented entertainers we have here in Southwest

Florida. Let’s introduce (or re-introduce) you to the Coral Stone Band, Levi John, Mark Sanders, Heather Ivy, Roy Schneider, Kim Mayfield, Ray Cerbone, John Butler, Susan Chastain, Susan Hulcher, Ben Allen Band, Jaid Johnson, Pure Country of Southwest Florida, Dan Meadows, Tara Ann and Jesse of Resolution, Timothy Martin, Thunder Beach, The Freecoasters and Michael Dutra. So, we ask that you continue to support our local and live music scene...the artists who perform and the venues that hire them. And, when you see that little bucket or container in front of the performer, please don’t hesitate to add to that tip jar. For many of these folks, performing live is their main source of income.

Something Rotten THEATRE

at The Naples Players

Welcome to the Renaissance. Something Rotten, the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, takes the stage in Blackburn Hall at The Naples Players now through July 24. Something Rotten was hailed by The New York Times as "the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years." Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick Bottom (Mark Vanagas) and Nigel (Eduardo Marin) are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz. “Something Rotten has something for everyone” says director and choreographer Dawn Lebrecht-Fornara. “If you hate Shakespeare, you'll love it. If you love Shakespeare, you'll love it. If you hate musicals, you'll love it. If you love musicals, you'll love it.” Lebrecht-Fornara will be joined by music director Charles Fornara to lead an all-star ensemble cast of Naples favorites, many of whom have become regular staples of The Naples Players most popular shows. The cast includes (in alphabetical order): Brad Brenner, Jamielynn Bucci, 6 - JULY 2022

Joe Byrne, Adam Fasano, Jeremy Giovinazzo, Ralph Krumins, Eduardo Marin, Erica Sample, Mark Vanagas and Jack Weld in the principal roles. It also features Gaby Alezard, Santiago Alezard, Leonard Allen, Brian Boland, Mckenna Cloud, Jillian Cossetta, Luke Danni, Maxine Danni, Frankie Federico, Jacob Feltman, Naphtailda Jean-Charles, Jillian Keith, Kelsey Lafrenais, Thomas Richardson, Sophia Rissi, Kenny Tran, Preslie True, Lorelai Vega and Ciaran Welch

in the ensemble. Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Both single and season tickets are on sale for $47 at the TNP Box Office. Those interested can visit www.NaplesPlayers.org anytime or call the TNP Box Office at 239-263-7990. The Naples Players perform at Sugden Theatre at 701 5Th Ave. S. in Naples. Happenings Magazine

Laboratory Theater presents Trap July 15 - 16

The Laboratory Theater of Florida, in conjunction with The Laboratory Theater of Florida: Education, will present the Southwest Florida premiere of Trap by Stephen Gregg for a limited edition run of three performances on July 15-16. Trap is a documentary-style thriller play based on research into the strange happenings of Menachap, Calif., where every member of a middle school play in 2019 fell unconscious. Using interviews with witnesses, first responders, and scientists involved in the strange case, the audience feels as if they’re living through the events themselves… whether they want to or not. This show is co-directed by Madelaine Weymouth and Steven Michael Kennedy. Weymouth notes, “This project has been a passion of mine since the idea first occurred to me: what would it look like if the campers were involved in adapting their own play? Based on interviews conducted through the Laboratory Theater, the campers tell a monologue play adapted from interviews taken with survivors of the Oak Box Incident of 2019 in Menachap, 8 - JULY 2022

Calif. Even though the students embody a variety of age ranges, from the Chief of Police to the students inside the Menachap school, the disbelief of the audience is quickly suspended as they’ll be sucked in, trying to figure out what exactly happened in the Oak Box Theater that night in 2019. We’ve only got one question: Can we tell you a secret?” Paula Sisk, the Lab’s director of education, adds, “As a professional teaching theater, I love that the education team continues to find fresh and creative plays, like Trap, for our campers. I am excited to watch our students master the complexities of this particular thriller.” The summer camp students present this psychological twister, and all proceeds support the Lab’s education program. Performances are July 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. and July 16 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students with valid student ID. Seating is limited. For tickets, call the box office at 239-218-0481 or online at www.laboratorytheaterflorida.com. Laboratory Theater is located at 1634 Woodford Ave. in downtown Fort Myers. Happenings Magazine

ART

Titans and Monty Python inspired art on display at Davis Art Center

The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center announces two art exhibitions opening at Art Walk on Friday, July 1. The Age of Titans is featured in the downstairs Grand Atrium of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Upstairs in the Capital Gallery, an exhibit titled Pythonesque, a group show that explores works inspired by Monty Python, will be on display. The Titans were the 12 children of the primordial deities Uranus (heaven) and Gaea (earth) that preceded the Olympians. For this group show, twelve local artists selected one Titan each to use as inspiration for their art from the six gods and six goddesses - Cronus, Oceanus, Coeus, Hyperion, Crius, Apetus, Thea, Phoebe, Mnemosyne, Themis, Rhea and Tethys. The immense talents of the artists were

12 - JULY 2022

Mully

taken to new heights, creating art pieces of Titanic proportions, and the artists were given wide scope to create on giant 8 x 9 foot canvases. Artists from diverse talents accepted the call: architect, designer, tattoo artist, and more, working in varied mediums such as oils, spray paint, acrylic, and found objects, to create unique and impressive large-scale works of art. Participating artists in the Age of Titans art show include Mariapia Malerba, Reynier Llanes, Danielle Branchaud, Brian Weaver, Dharma Lefevre, Mully, Savannah Leslie, Cesar Aguilera, Samantha Taylor, Israel Alpizar, Dawn Webb, and JC Franchevich. This exhibition has been centuries in the making, and is sure to be one of the epic highlights of the SBDAC’s Season of Giants. Imagine an art show that doesn’t take itself too seriously. For Pythonesque, artists were invited to produce works directly inspired by the very (very, very, very) many quips and punches from Monty Python’s comedies including Flying Circus, The Holy Grail, The Life of Brian, the Meaning of Life and more. From dead parrots, to rubber chickens, to the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, the potential influences are indeed endless- and not the least limited to that of birds. This most iconic and influential comedy series debuted over 50 years ago, and continues to inspire the arts, music, and film media to this day. Monty Python represents not just the finest in British comedy, but a symbol for the genius in the “anything goes” style of production. Surrealism, stream-of-consciousness, and absolute absurdity are continually celebrated in this exhibition.

Artists and guests may ‘silly walk’ their way through the gallery. Adding to the enjoyment on July 1, the music of DJ Dream Jay will be featured at Sidney’s Rooftop Sculpture Garden. Both galleries are open for viewing July 1 - 29. Opening night for both exhibitions will be July 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District. Doug Smithwick at ACT Gallery

Arts for ACT Gallery welcomes Doug Smithwick as the featured artist in July. An opening reception will be held Friday, July 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. Born in Norfolk, Va., Doug Smithwick was exposed to art at an early age. He has always been drawn to abstract art, with influences like Picasso, Mondrain and Kandinsky being his inspirations. As a teenager, Doug spent summers in New York City, enjoying the art and architecture. Doug’s love of straight edge lines and angles give his art a mid-century modern vibe. He never has a plan when he starts a new work, just starts with a form and lets the canvas dictate where to form from there. Doug loves color and balance and his favorite shape is the triangle. Come see this colorful abstract exhibit and see how many triangles you can find. The monies raised at the non-profit gallery support Abuse Counseling

Artists go black & white at DAAS Co-Op ART

In July, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the artwork of the many local artists who answered the call for artists, announced in earlier this year. The theme: Black and White only. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, July 1 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through July 31. The cooperative decided to host an open invitation to all Southwest Florida artists, challenging them to use only two colors: black and white. All mediums are considered acceptable, but there were some stipulations, as published in the gallery’s website. It is not surprise that all artists’ submissions excelled and exceeded the expectations. The magic of the exhibition is a cohesiveness, regardless of the themes or subjects, mediums or dimensions.

All pieces together, transform the space in a monochromatic scheme, orchestrated by the curation of member artist and co-owner Xavier Brignoni – who is also participating in the exhibition. “When the artwork is well finished and balanced, it is easy to display. When there are multiple strong pieces together, from various artists, it is important to find a connection and display them in a way that it makes sense for the viewer – even if these pieces were never meant to be next to each other,” said Brignoni, who is also a founding member of the Union Artist Studios. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in Fort Myers. The gallery’s hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645.

ART

ArtBeat Studios features works of Alfonso Segovia

A multi-talented creative and imaginative artist, Alfonso Segovia began writing, painting and sculpting as a child in his native Colombia. His art is linked to his writing, and always tells a beautiful and interesting story. Segovia creates a unique metamorphosis in his ballerinas, painting vibrant and intricate miniature landscapes on their colorful wings. The dancers are painted with butterflies, on palm trees and beaches, always under a marvelously starry sky with a shining full moon. The butterflies in Segovia’s paintings are anthropomorphized, given human traits and actions. Alfonso Segovia’s passion has enabled him to utilize color and form to illustrate his universal world of fantasy and reality.

His paintings and sculptures carry the magic of his fiction and non-fiction works that project his endlessly dreaming soul. ArtBeat Studios Gallery and Gifts is honored to have a varied representation of Alfonso Segovia’s work. Join the gallery for “Meet the

ACMA welcomes Nate Currin, Keith Rea MUSIC

The Americana Community Music Association presents Nate Currin back on the live stage at their listening room in Fort Myers. The concert will be July 16, and John Butler will open the evening. With over 800,000 miles driven and almost 900 shows performed over the last 12 years, Nate Currin is a troubadour in every sense of the word. With his roots in the North Georgia clay, Nate has enough of the South in his voice and writing to show off his upbringing but he includes an emotional trustworthiness that can't be faked. Having shared the stage with plenty of "big" names and had songs featured on a myriad of television shows, Nate retains his enigmatic drive to fly under the radar from time to time. Over the last five years, he has won 5 International Music & Entertainment Awards, including Songwriter of the Year twice and been nominated for Indie Music Awards as well as a Georgia Music Award. In addition to that, several of Nate's albums have reached the top 20 charts on iTunes including his last album The Madman and the Poet. Nate recently released his 5th studio album, entitled Ashes & Earth, which is already garnering industry attention and accolades. ACMA member and singer-songwriter

Weekly acoustic festival

at Shell Point through July

The Americana Community Music Association announced a four-week Americana Festival at Shell Point Retirement Community in July that is open to the public. The concerts will take place every Thursday in July at 7 p.m. at the Tribby Arts Center at Shell Point, 17281 On Par Blvd., Fort Myers. The Tribby Arts Center at Shell Point is a new state-of-the-art auditorium with a seating capacity of 400. Tickets are $20 per person per concert and are available at www.tribbyartscenter.com

July 7 - Passerine

Passerine’s distinctive sound combines vocal harmonies, the crisp rhythms of an acoustic guitar, the haunting voices of the fiddle and dobro (resonator slide guitar), the resonant lows of an acoustic bass. With inventive vocal harmonies and song-writing, supported by the sounds of acoustic strings, Passerine offers a fresh take on traditional folk and bluegrass music as well as a repertoire of original songs that range from sweet ballads to the edgier side of contemporary Americana.

July 14 - Roy Schneider, Kim Mayfield and Ray Cerbone

Founding member of the Americana duo Reckless Saints, Roy Schneider has been performing his original music for the past two decades. His songs have thrice made him a Kerrville New Folk finalist, and in 2013 a contestant on NBC’s The Voice.

Kim Mayfield is better known as half of the Americana duo Roy Schneider & Kim Mayfield (now called Reckless Saints.) Reviewers have described her music as 'pearly and sashaying,' 'pleasantly invoking the legendary Tammy Wynette,' and 'haunted by Patsy Cline.' Mayfield's song, Ring Around the Moon, made her a semifinalist in the 2019 International Songwriting Competition. Ray Cerbone began playing guitar during the late ‘60s folk scene. With the support and inspiration of fellow local and touring musicians, he began writing and playing in earnest in 2010. Traveling a long road in a short time, his music encompasses many genres, including Americana, folk, blues, ballads, and a little bit of country.

July 21 - The Little Fools (John Butler, Susan Chastain and Susan Hulcher

John R. Butler first played music for money during the Johnson administration. The Johnson administration. Butler went on to play in a number of bands and as a solo performer throughout high school, college and later. John R. Butler’s songwriting has garnered prizes at the Kerrville (TX) New Folk competition, the Will McLean Music Festival and the South Florida Folk Festival. These days Butler airs out his musical mojo alongside Susan Chastain, erstwhile jazz chanteuse and current belter of ballads, diva of ditties, marquesa of melodies. They will be joined by the undeniably undeniable Susie Hulcher in holy

bratrimony. Susie Hulcher has been in love with the human voice and with the art of song for as long as she can remember. She is an energetic vocalist, compelling songwriter and versatile bassist and guitarist, and her vast array of sonic influences is readily apparent when she performs live, and especially in her original songs.

July 28 - Brian Smalley

Having played guitar all his life, Brian has developed some skill on the git-box, and possessing a creative (and somewhat disturbed) imagination, he is a master storyteller. Before Chosen, he’d recorded six projects. His acoustic novel “ChickensPigs” received the Best Florida Folk CD award from The Florida Times Union in 2013. And thousands have enjoyed the tale of Painter Kellet, a homeless man in Key West, from the acoustic novel Key. But now the floodgates have been loosed, and teaming up with Gatorbone Recording Studio, Brian and friends give us some real ear-candy with Chosen.

Seminole Casino Hotel welcomes

Chris MacDonald’s Memories of Elvis

Happenings Magazine

Chris MacDonald’s Memories of Elvis in Concert tribute to the King of Rock and Roll comes to Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee Saturday, Aug. 13 at 8 p.m. with gates opening at 7 p.m. Chris MacDonald is the star and creator of Chris MacDonald's Memories of Elvis in Concert, a national touring full-production, multi-media tribute, complete with a dynamic band and singers. With the ultimate honor of being the only tribute artist hired by Elvis Presley Enterprises to perform at Graceland’s Heartbreak Hotel, MacDonald draws his audience in with the look, sounds and nuances that made Elvis the King. The show is not a parody or an overdone impersonation; rather, there is a true understanding of what Elvis did best, connecting with his music and the heart of his audience. It is a natural, heartfelt tribute to an American icon and

his music. As an accomplished and experienced entertainer, MacDonald has performed in Vegas and Branson, and with the famous Legends in Concert stage productions. He has also headlined with Elvis' own original back up group, the Jordanaires and D.J. Fontana, at the world-renowned Hard Rock Live Concert Arena. Through highlights and music from several stages of Elvis Presley’s iconic career – including the early years, the movies, the black leather 1968 comeback, and the white fringe 1970 Vegas concerts – MacDonald shares the incredible story and unforgettable memories of the shy, humble, country boy who became the King of Rock and Roll. Tickets are now on sale for $49 and are available by phone at 1800-514-ETIX or online at www.moreinparadise.com. JULY 2022 - 23
