Happy Fourth of July

It’s always nice to celebrate our nation’s independence. As Americans, we love our parades, fireworks, barbecues, cold beverages and this particular American loves his share of live music. For those who want to partake in some great live music, please see our Fourth of July roundup on page 12 of the magazine. Local and national artists will entertain thousands of area residents in Southwest Florida. And, a lot of that entertainment is free. Please remember as you celebrate all the freedoms that we enjoy as Americans, to also make it a safe holiday.

Explore Key West

In this month’s magazine, we officially kick off a new feature about the cool special events that take place in Key West. We have partnered with our friends at Key West Express to offer our magazine readers some opportunities to get away and visit Key West and experience all of its wonderful events and attractions. We hope you will enjoy it. This month, we start with Hemingway Days and Mel Fisher Days.

Local and live music

Happenings Magazine has been entertaining Southwest Florida for nearly 22 years with articles, photos and listings about live music. In the summertime, we kick that up a notch or two and showcase a few more local artists than usual. It’s at this time of the year when the locals can get into their favorite restaurants or watering holes and hear some great music by some very talented local artists. I know I sound like a broken record, but when you do see musicians performing locally, be sure to tip them well. They truly deserve our applause and tips.

Theatre in the summer

A handful of theatres stay active all year in Southwest Florida, and we commend them for that. So, here’s a rundown of what you can see on stage this month: Mary Poppins flies onto the Broadway Palm stage June 12 through Aug. 12 in Fort Myers. In Cape Coral, Cultural Park Theater presents Jersey Girls July 14 - 16 and Standing O (a modern Broadway revue) July 21 - 23. Laboratory Theater of Florida continues its run of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane: A Parody of the Horror through July 15. In Naples, Sister Act can be seen on stage at the Sugden Theatre. The Naples Players perform the musical June 29 through July 30. Right Bed, Wrong Husband is on stage at the Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers through July 29.

More concerts

On a national scale, we do have some great entertainers coming to our neck of the woods in the coming months. Jerrod Niemann will be at Red White and Boom in Cape Coral July 4, and he will return to play Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee in November. Other national artists on the schedule include the Steve Miller Band, Peter Frampton, Tracy Lawrence, Gretchen Wilson, Ted Nugent, Canaan Smith, Josh Thompson, Randy Houser, JJ Grey & Mofro, Los Lobos, Terri Clark, Chris Isaak, Don McLean, The Lacs, Big Smo, Charlie Daniels Band, Marshall Tucker Band and the Village People ... to name a few. Rock on,

Jamie
