TheatreZone’s Home for the Holidays starts new season Dec. 15 - 17 in Naples Kick off holiday festivities this December with a performance of Home for the Holidays Dec. 15 - 17, TheatreZone’s seventh annual production of its traditional season opener. The popular holiday musical is a feast for the senses with memorable songs, exuberant choreography and colorful costumes. Home for the Holidays will be performed on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16 and 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $50 to $85, depending on seat selection. The musical was created by TheatreZone’s founding artistic director Mark Danni in 2016. “I wanted to create a fun and festive show to get everyone in the holiday spirit,” Danni said. “It’s also our welcome to the seasonal residents of Southwest Florida returning for the winter and TheatreZone’s 19th season.” The musical’s cast features 10 kids from ages five to 10 from Community School of Naples, which hosts TheatreZone on its campus in a dedicated building. Joining the adorable children are eight adult professional actors many of whom are members of the Actors’ Equity Association.

Together, the cast performs holiday songs and lively dance routines choreographed by TheatreZone’s associate artistic director Karen Molnar Danni. A seven-piece professional band is directed by Charles Fornara. “Every year, our song lineup changes to mix in modern songs with classics,” Danni said. “New songs this year include “Christmas Morning Feeling” from the movie Spirited, “Disco Santa” and a Blake Shelton-Gwen Steffani duet, "You Make it Feel Like Christmas." “The energetic cast, creative costumes, live band and funny skits and banter give the show a fun atmosphere,” Danni said. Cast members include TheatreZone favorites Robert Koutras (Rock of Ages, Bright Star); Alex Jorth (Copacabana, 9 to 5); Steve Geyer (Aida, Copacabana); Luke Danni (Mystery of Edwin Drood, Gypsy); Erica Sample (Rock of Ages, Escape to Margaritaville); Maya Senecharles (Heathers); Lindsey Walsh (Home for the Holidays), and Corinne Holland, whom TheatreZone welcomes for her debut performance with the company. Following each performance, Mark Danni guides a backstage tour for

patrons to experience the inner world of theatre. Guests see where actors wait in the wings and the colorful costume areas where performers are transformed into their characters. A special sight is the orchestra area, which is on stage and can accommodate up to seven musicians performing the music for TheatreZone’s productions. Guests can bask in the limelight of center stage and vicariously feel a performer’s excitement. The backstage tours are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance. To buy tickets for Home for Holidays and book a backstage tour, visit www.theatre.zone. Tickets are $50 to $85, depending on seat selection. Florida Repertory Theatre rings in the holiday season with an inventive whodunit, A Sherlock Carol by Mark Shanahan. The production runs in the Historic Arcade Theatre Dec. 1 – 17 with discounted previews Nov. 28 – 30. A Sherlock Carol is a mash-up of the worlds of Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The story begins on Christmas Eve when a grown-up Tiny Tim makes a visit to the world’s foremost consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes. Timothy Cratchit, now a doctor, tries to enlist Holmes’ help to solve a mystery involving Ebenezer Scrooge. Holmes, however, is in no mood for an investigation so it takes some convincing for the great detective to face the spirits of the past, present, and future, in order to get to the bottom of the crime. “The play is a blend of two beloved classic tales,” said producing artistic director Greg Longenhagen. “Audiences will be reunited with familiar characters freshly intertwined in a plot filled with intrigue, suspense, and holiday cheer.” The play was featured at Florida Rep’s 2020 PlayLab Festival of New Works and is fresh off successful fully staged runs in London and New York. Florida Repertory Theatre to stage electrifying drama The Mountaintop

Florida Repertory Theatre's 26th season continues with The Mountaintop by Katori Hall. The production runs in the ArtStage Studio Theatre Dec. 12 through Jan. 14 in downtown Fort Myers. The Mountaintop reimagines the night before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. The play is set in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis where Dr. King stayed after delivering his most memorable speech. The story opens with an exhausted Dr. King calling room service for a cup of coffee as he struggles to write his next powerful speech. When a hotel maid arrives with his order, the two begin a conversation that prompts Dr. King to confront his life, his past, his legacy, and the plight and future of the people he represents. Playwright Katori Hall’s play examines “what if” and applies magical realism to move the characters – and audience - through unexpected twists and turns. The dia-

log is reflective, touching, and humorous at times. Hall won an Olivier Best New Play award for The Mountaintop in 2010. More recently, Hall won a Pulitzer Prize for her play The Hot Wing King and wrote the book for the Tina Turner Musical. “The Mountaintop is an electrifying drama full of theatricality and engaging dialog,” said producing artistic director Greg Longenhagen. “The play challenges audiences to consider Dr. King the man - as he faces his humanity, addressing his fears, his frailties, and his passions.” Florida Rep’s cast features Daniel Morgan Shelley (August Wilson’s Fences) and fellow New York-based actor Hope Ward making her Florida Rep debut. Tickets start at $65 and may be purchased online at www.floridarep.org or by calling the box office at 239-3324488 or toll-free at 877-787-8053.

I’ve learned how to get into the head and the psychological process of the characters I play. It’s a real family here. From the very first night of rehearsal, we fell right back into it. It was like the three years never happened.” It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is based on the classic 1946 holiday movie with a clever twist: the production is staged as a live radio broadcast. Norman says he remembers listening to radio plays when he was younger, and still enjoys making them to this day. This component was one of the things that drew him to this production. A radio play is a play that’s broadcast with only sound over the radio. It’s all about sound, voice characterization, and using your imagination. Since this show is live, it’s much more like a traditional play than a radio play, but it still heavily relies on your voice and sound to tell the story.” Norman says, “If you love the movie, you’re going to love the play, and you’re going to be surprised at how much the play adds to the story. The play adds no new content, but the live presentation adds to the audience’s understanding of what George Bailey is going through.” Performed for two nights only on Dec. 8 and 9 at 8 pm. It’s a Wonderful Life: Live Radio Play will be performed offsite and outdoors in Cambier Park while The Naples Players’ historic 5th Avenue South building undergoes a $20 million renovation. Will The Laboratory Theater of Florida finally decide the age-old question of whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas show? It’s the Die Hard you know and love: actions, explosions

Carrie’s pieces will be accompanied by a QR code that will link the viewer to the song

that inspired the piece. Viewers are encouraged to bring headphones to the exhibition. In her debut solo exhibition, sculptor Carrie Briggs captures the raw essence of music through her sculptures, incorporating the beat into every curve and line of her powerful figures. A native of New York, Carrie took a hand clay class at the Cape Coral Art Center in 2021 and reignited a passion for sculpting. “I was moved through a personal spiritual awakening in parallel with a severe manic bipolar episode and sculpting erupted into my life at a furious pace. Sine then, a steady stream of sculptures has come through,” says Briggs. ArtSocial evening workshops with George Hobbs are set for Dec. 7 and 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. The art center staff believes in expanding your creative horizons and providing you with new skills to add to your toolbox. With George Hobbs as your guide, each month you'll have the opportunity to learn a brand new skill and unleash your inner artist. In December, participants will create alcohol ink designs.

Hirdie Girdie Gallery showcases John Beall and Terry Lynn Spry

The Hirdie Gallery welcomes new member John Beall, woodturner. John is a retired educator with a lifelong interest in working with wood. He is now focusing on the art of woodturning, and enjoys creating pieces with a technique called segmented woodturning. One style of this technique is a complex process known as basket illusion woodturning. A basic design and pattern is first drawn on graph paper. Then wood segments are cut and glued in rings to form the shape of the piece. The rings are turned on a lathe into John Beall the shape of the design and horizontal beads are turned into the piece. A woodburning tool is used to form thousands of individual small beads along vertical guide lines, and all the beads are then painted with India ink to mirror the original design. The result is a wood turned piece that gives the illusion of being a woven basket. The gallery’s December guest artist is Terry Lynn Spry, who is well known in Southwest Florida for her award-winning oil paintings. Terry Lynn is a graduate of the Phoenix Institute of

Designed for performance, the venue offers excellent acoustics, giant projection screens that bring the pianists up close to everyone, and a seating capacity large enough to accommodate any audience comfortably yet cozy enough for intimacy. "This year, we are bringing back some of our beloved crowd favorites," said president and artistic director Milana Strezeva. "Eric Lu graced our series in 2018 and has since earned international recogni-

tion by winning the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition and performing with such renowned orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony and London Philharmonic.” Grand Piano Series welcomes Eric Lu on Dec. 14. Eric Lu won first prize at The Leeds International Piano Competition in 2018, the first American to win the prestigious prize since Murray Perahia. He made his BBC Proms debut the following summer, and is currently a member of the BBC New Generation Artist scheme. It’s the same roots that produced bands like The Allman Brothers, Grand Funk Railroad, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Aerosmith. Ranked at No. 22 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hair Metal, Tesla has sold millions of albums in the United States.

Their 1986 debut album “Mechanical Resonance” would eventually go platinum, nestled comfortably in the top 40, and produce the iconic hard rock hits, “Modern Day Cowboy” and “Little Suzi.”

Today, “Mechanical Resonance” lives on as one of the most successful and acclaimed debuts of the era. Tesla, who in 2020 celebrated the 30th anniversary of one of its most iconic albums, “Five Man Acoustical Jam,” has endured many of the same taste-changing challenges that affected many in the post-grunge world, but through it all, their bluecollar work ethic and dedication to their faithful fan base has helped them not just survive but thrive. Always a person to take on new challenges, in 2017 LaBelle launched a record label, GPE Records, and released her first jazz album, “Bel Hommage.” Although she is an award-winning entertainer, author and entrepreneur, LaBelle’s work as a humanitarian is just as noteworthy. She remains an advocate for adoption, diabetes, cancer, HIV/AIDS and many other causes and non-profit initiatives. While she has reached the heights of success throughout her 60-plus-year career, LaBelle has also endured and survived personal strife. Within a 10-year period, she lost her mother, three sisters and best friend to diabetes and cancer. Lonestar to headline Everglades Seafood Festival The Florida Stone Crabbers Association (FLSCA) will present the 54th annual Everglades Seafood Festival Feb. 2 – 4 at 102 Copeland Ave. North (just outside Everglades City Hall). The musical headliner for the 2024 event will be Lonestar. Not every musician has the opportunity to revisit and even potentially improve upon their biggest hits. But on the forthcoming Ten to 1 record, the award-winning band Lonestar— Dean Sams (keyboards, acoustic guitar, background vocals), Michael Britt (lead guitarist, background vocals), Keech Rainwater (drums) and Drew Womack (lead vocals, guitar)—are taking a fresh look at all 10 of their chart-topping country songs. This streak started in 1996 with the band's second single, the rock-edged "No News," and continued with the following year's "Come Cryin' to Me" and “Everything’s Changed.” The band's quadruple-platinum 1999 album Lonely Grill spawned four No. 1 hits (including the beloved global smash"Amazed") and established Lonestar as music's preeminent pop-country band—a

status they maintained through the 2000s and beyond. With these re-recordings, the band members were mindful of striking a balance between preserving the sonic elements fans were familiar with—and not repeating them. Fittingly, TEN to 1 record reflects the ways Lonestar's hits have evolved over the years during the band's rousing, high-energy concerts. Such talent has contributed to the band winning many of music’s top honors, including Academy of Country Music Awards for New Vocal Group in 1996, Single and Song of The Year in 2000, along with Humanitarian of The Year in 2002. They also won the Country Music Association's Vocal Group of the Year and International Artist Achievement award in 2001. All told, Lonestar has sold more than 10.5 million records since its formation. Lonestar will perform Saturday, Feb. 3. Friday’s festival admission is a canned food donation. Saturday and Sunday adult admission is a $10 minimum donation. Visit www.evergladesseafoodfestival.org for information.

Festival of Trees Nov. 30 - Dec. 3 Rosaline will perform at the Davis Art Center on Friday, Dec. 1.

The 17th Annual Festival of Trees returns to the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in November. Experience the winter wonderland of trees gorgeously decorated and generously bedecked by local businesses to raise money for Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida and SBDAC, plus many events all taking place Nov. 30 to Dec. 3. Presented by Publix Super Markets Charities, Festival of Trees is a huge holiday destination downtown where beautiful trees decorated and adorned with presents on, under and around the trees by local businesses are raffled off to help raise money for Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida and the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Offering family events for every age, the seasonal celebrations begin with a ticketed preview party on Wednesday, Nov. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. Come get into the holiday spirit with a sneak preview of the Festival of Trees and celebrate with hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction, and wine pull. A holiday themed wine and paint night will be a ticketed offering on Thursday, Nov. 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. ‘Tis the season to get creative with one of SW Florida’s favorite local artists, Dharma Lefevre. This talented and quirky elf will demonstrate how to create a gorgeous wintery landscape. Each artist will be supplied with canvas, paint, brushes, and of course… wine. Mayor Kevin Anderson will continue the annual tradition of lighting the massive wreath gracing the loggia of the SBDAC followed by live music out on the street from Rosaline - a free event happening Friday, Dec. 1 from 7 to 10 p.m. Santa’s Block Party will be held Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Join Santa for family fun and holiday festivities! Santa’s Block Party is an opportunity for kids to enjoy student performers, create holiday art, color Christmas and holiday cards, decorate yummy cookies from Publix Super Markets, enjoy a train ride, and write letters to Santa and our military

service members! Free entry, with Kids Workshop Bags available for purchase at the event. Lee Schools Holiday Showcase will be featured on the outdoor stage later that evening, another free event, on Dec. 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. The popular Tree Raffle Drawing when all trees and gifts will be raffled off to the lucky winners is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. Except for the tree being donated to Golisano Children’s Hospital, all trees are valued at over $1,750 each and will be making spirits bright in their new locations. Notified winners will receive the themed tree plus all of the gifts on and around, including delivery and set up. Bring new, unwrapped toys to donate and get free admission to the festival. Friends of Janet Foundation, FOJ, is a 501(c)(3) foundation formed in loving memory of Janet and Ann to honor their service to others and to build a legacy of giving in their names. Janet Wilson and her sister, Ann Wilson, were long-time residents of Southwest Florida devoted to community and giving back. Janet often pulled together friends to help support her various charities, who jokingly called themselves the ‘friends of Janet’. Just before their tragic car accident in 2019, they were gathering toys to be given away during the holiday season. Toys will be collected at all Festival of Trees events, and at various other partner businesses, and will then be distributed to local children's charities. The Festival of Trees general admission is $2 per person, (5 and under free) for viewing, voting for favorites, and purchasing raffle tickets ($10 each, 3/$25, 10/$50, 25/$100). For more information call 239-333-1933 or visit the website at www.sbdac.com for details, tickets and to check for possible schedule changes. Annual Christmas Carol Sing Dec. 5

Celebrate the holidays and help feed the hungry by singing at the 32nd Annual Christmas Carol Sing sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships and Susan Bennett Marketing & Media, L.C. The Christmas Carol Sing will be Tuesday, Dec. 5, at First Presbyterian Church, 2438 Second St. in downtown Fort Myers. Admission is free, although organizers request voluntary donations of at least two cans of non-perishable food for The Soup Kitchen, operated by Community Cooperative, and a voluntary cash donation, if you can. Because of the overwhelming popularity of the event, two sing-alongs are planned at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The doors will open 30 minutes prior to show time. Community Cooperative is an innovative nonprofit organization made up of social service entrepreneurs fighting to end homelessness and hunger in our community. It provides more than 26,000 meals each month through Sam’s Community Café, Meals on Wheels programs and school programs, distributes more than 2.1 million pounds of groceries through its Mobile Food Pantries, and serves 14,000 individuals and families with homeless and comprehensive case management services through its Social & Education Resource Centers. A United Way partner, Community Cooperative serves Lee and Happenings Magazine

Collier counties. The church has been a strong supporter of the agency from the beginning and continues to support its ministry there by providing volunteers and other support for Sam’s Community Café & Kitchen and the Meals on Wheels program. “The need has never been greater with so many people struggling after the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian. The food that is donated will go immediately to those in our community who desperately need it,” said First Presbyterian Pastor Dr. Paul deJong. Cash donations are especially needed because Community Cooperative can buy five times as much food for the same amount of money that residents spend at local grocery stores. The Christmas Carol Sing is a festival of holiday music and family fun. This year’s 90minute performance will feature the First Presbyterian Church Choir, soloists and other special guests singing favorite holiday carols with audience sing-a-longs. There is a strong rumor that Santa Claus will be making a surprise visit. In addition to the Christmas Carol Sing, First Presbyterian Church also annually presents Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing in February. Both events benefit Community Cooperative. He produced RFDTV’s “Music and Motors” featuring Mike Curb’s NASCAR team and young country music stars in the making. When a song he penned himself, “Totch Brown,” about a character from the Florida Everglades was being demoed, independent artist Rickie Lee Tanner decided to cut it on his album “This Here.” A year later, country artist Jake Clayton cut two of his compositions, “Down with That” and “Old Red Barn.” The High South band had it’s first hit with his Co-write “All We Need” He penned all his new EP releases of “Native Son,” “Island Songs” and “Legacy” and has co-written with some well-known hit songwriters Phoenix Mendoza, Keesy Timmer and Walker Hayes.
